Leader of Turkish Cypriot Ersin Tatar, on Saturday (August 19), called the road project which has triggered a rare tension with the United Nations peacekeepers in the region, “essential”. Meanwhile, Turkey’s ruling party spokesman called the UN peacekeepers’ response “unacceptable” which blocked the construction in the buffer zone dividing Cyprus.

<h2>Turkey and Turkish Cypriots criticise UN</h2>

The criticism by Turkey comes a day after a scuffle broke out between UN peacekeepers and Turkish Cypriot security personnel when the peacekeepers tried to block construction of a controversial road in Pyla, an ethnically mixed village. The area, the UN says, is a part of the buffer zone and under its jurisdiction.&nbsp;

The area in question is between the internationally recognised Republic of Cyprus in the south and a breakaway Turkish Cypriot statelet in the north. On Saturday, Turkish Cypriot officials accused the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) of overstepping its boundaries.

“It is unfortunate that an attempt was made by UNFICYP to obstruct the development of the road being carried out by a civilian contractor, within the sovereign territory of the TRNC,” said Tatar, in a statement to Reuters, referring to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), a breakaway state recognised only by Ankara.

Similarly, Omer Celik, spokesman for Turkey’s ruling AKP party defended the road project and slammed the UN’s move. “The attitude of the UN peacekeeping force serving in Cyprus...was unacceptable and extremely wrong,” said the Celik, on X (formerly Twitter).&nbsp;

He also said that the UN peacekeepers’ attitude “aimed at pleasing the Greek Cypriot side has damaged the reputation” of the UN mission in Cyprus. Notably, Pyla is the only village where Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots live side by side.

Authorities in TRNC have also defended the project and said it had a “humanitarian objective” and aimed at providing ease of access to TRNC territory for our citizens” living in the village.&nbsp;

Tatar, also the president of the TRNC, told Reuters the road was essential for purely humanitarian grounds to address economic and transportation issues for Turkish Cypriots living in that village.&nbsp;

<h2>UN responds to accusations</h2>

The UN mission on the east Mediterranean island, addressing the incident, said that their peacekeepers were assaulted as they tried to block “unauthorised construction work” near Pyla. The scuffle has since drawn condemnation from the United States, United Kingdom, and the European Union.&nbsp;

The UN has also said that just under half of the 11.5 kilometres falls within the Turkish Cypriot-controlled territory. A spokesperson for UNFICYP told Reuters, that there was no construction underway on Saturday, and peacekeepers remained in the area, which was “firmly” within the buffer zone.&nbsp;

A British nurse named Lucy Letby has been found guilty of the murder of seven newborns and the attempted murders of six others by the Manchester Crown Court on Friday (August 18), &nbsp;said the local police department. The verdict brings an end to the years-long case which has haunted England since the string of deaths in the neonatal unit where the nurse worked, first came to light nearly seven years ago.&nbsp;

<h2>What was she found guilty of?</h2>

Letby, 33, has been convicted of killing five baby boys and two baby girls at the Countess of Chester hospital, where she often worked night shifts, in 2015 and 2016. She was also found guilty of attacking six other newborns in the neonatal unit.&nbsp;

During the trial, the jury was told that Letby poisoned some of her infant victims by injecting them with insulin and others were injected with air or force-fed milk, sometimes involving multiple attacks before they died. However, she has denied those accusations.&nbsp;

The 33-year-old faced a total of 22 charges. However, Letby was found not guilty of two counts of attempted murder.&nbsp;The jury also could not reach a decision&nbsp;on six charges of attempted murder.

The verdict, following a 10-month trial at Manchester Crown Court, makes Letby one of Britain’s most prolific serial child killers. Notably, it was also the longest murder trial in British legal history. Jurors reportedly deliberated for 110 hours and 26 minutes.&nbsp;

It was also found that Letby, who was first charged in 2020, also attacked twins – in one case she murdered both siblings. Additionally, she also tried to kill one baby girl three times before finally succeeding on the fourth attempt.

“Lucy Letby was entrusted to protect some of the most vulnerable babies. Little did those working alongside her know that there was a murderer in their midst,” said Pascale Jones, a senior prosecutor from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

He added, “She did her utmost to conceal her crimes, by varying the ways in which she repeatedly harmed babies in her care.” Letby was arrested in 2018 and 2019 in relation to the investigation, but not charged until after a criminal investigation by the Cheshire police.&nbsp;

<h2>Years-long investigation</h2>

The CPS argues she secretly attacked 13 babies in the neonatal ward of the hospital and her intention was to kill the babies while making her colleagues believe that the deaths occurred due to natural causes.&nbsp;

Letby’s actions first came to light after senior doctors became concerned about the rise in the number of unexplained deaths and collapses at the neonatal unit – where premature or sick babies are treated – over the course of 18 months starting in January 2015.&nbsp;

This prompted the hospital to begin an investigation in 2016. An independent review published in 2017, found no definitive explanation. However, the report did note significant gaps in staffing, poor decision-making in the unit and an insufficient number of senior staff members.

Since the doctors were unable to find a medical reason, the police were called in and after a lengthy investigation, it was found that Letby had been involved in the care of the babies.&nbsp;

During the trial, prosecutor Nick Johnson, called her a “constant malevolent presence when things took a turn for the worse.”&nbsp;

It was also found that one of the victim’s mothers walked in on her attacking her twin babies and Letby told her, “Trust me, I’m a nurse.”&nbsp;

The police also found paperwork and medical notes with references to the babies she murdered. She also carried out social media searches for the parents and families of the murdered babies.

<h2>‘I am evil, I did it’ note&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;</h2>

During a search operation of her house, police found a handwritten note with the message ‘I AM EVIL, I DID THIS’.

When asked about this by defence barrister Ben Meyers KC, Letby reasoned, “because I felt at the time I had done something wrong and I thought I’m such an awful, evil person…that I had made mistakes and not known.”

The nurse said she thought “that somehow I had been incompetent and I had done something wrong to affect these babies. I felt I must be responsible in some way.”&nbsp;

The prosecution has described her as a cold, cruel, calculating liar who had repeatedly changed her account of events. They also called for her notes to be treated as a confession.&nbsp;

However, detectives involved in the case, during the trial said that they could not find any motive for why she had become a killer and did not find anything unusual about her life.&nbsp;

“The only person that can answer that...is Lucy Letby herself,” said Detective Superintendent Paul Hughes who led the investigation.&nbsp;

<h2>Letby defends herself</h2>

The British nurse, over the course of the trial, repeatedly said she never tried to hurt the babies and wanted to care for them.

She also went on to blame the unsafe staffing levels on the ward and its dirty conditions which may have contributed to the babies’ death. Letby also claimed four doctors had conspired to blame her for the hospital’s failings and maintained her innocence.&nbsp;

“I have never murdered a child or harmed any of them,” said Letby.

<h2>Sentencing and further investigations</h2>

Letby will be sentenced on Monday (August 21) and is set to face a long prison term, and possibly a rare full life sentence.

The British police are still carrying out further investigations into Letby’s entire career as a nurse where she worked at the hospital as well as another one in Liverpool where she had trained, to find any other victims.&nbsp;

Hughes says police are reviewing all 4,000 admissions of babies into neonatal units at the two hospitals where Letby worked between 2012 and 2016. However, it does not mean they are “investigating all 4,000,” he added.&nbsp;

“It just means that we are committed to a thorough review of every admission from a medical perspective, to ensure that nothing is missed throughout the entirety of her employment as a nurse,” said the detective.&nbsp;

<h2>UK govt calls for investigation into case</h2>

The UK government has also called for an independent inquiry into the “circumstances behind the murders and attempted murders of babies” at the hospital to “ensure families get the answers they need”.&nbsp;

Explained | British nurse Lucy Letby found guilty of killing 7 newborn babies. What did she do?

A&nbsp;Sikh man in his 20s was charged with stabbing two people during a community event in Southall, west London, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement on Thursday (August 17).

Gurpreet Singh, 25, was charged with several offences as he appeared at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court in London.

The charges against him include&nbsp;a count of attempted grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent, two counts of GBH with intent, one count of affray, one count of threats with a bladed article, and two counts of possession of a bladed article, the police said on Thursday, as per news agency PTI.

Singh, who has been remanded to custody, has been asked to appear at Isleworth Crown Court in London on September 14.

The incident reportedly took place during a community event which was related to India's Independence Day in Southall on Tuesday (August 17) night, some videos of which also emerged on social media, reportedly showing a clash involving some pro-Khalistani extremists and police officers chasing suspects.

"I recognise the enormous concern this incident will have caused, both in Southall and in the Sikh communities around London and further afield, in what was an otherwise largely peaceful and celebratory event,” said Metropolitan Police Superintendent Sean Lynch, responsible for neighbourhood policing in Ealing, west London.

“Our urgent investigation continues. We are aware of footage circulating on social media, with people also commenting on what they think happened. We would urge people to avoid echoing or adding to the speculation. Fortunately, none of those injured were seriously hurt and there were no fatalities," he said.&nbsp;

As per PTI reports, another man who was in his 20s was also arrested at the scene but was later released on police bail pending further enquiries.

The police also said that a female officer at the spot, who was involved in detaining one of the aggressors, sustained a small wound in her hand but did not require medical intervention.

The probe into the matter is being conducted by Met Police detectives from West Area CID. A Section 35 Dispersal Order authorised to disperse crowds in the area has since been lifted.

Recently, several incidents, and protests, have been reported in many countries related to pro-Khalistani activists like the United States, Australia and Canada.&nbsp;

<h2>Khalistani protests fizzle out amid tight security in US</h2>

Security was tightened outside the Indian embassy in Washington DC in the wake of protests called by Khalistani supporters on Indian Independence Day (August 15). Several police personnel were deployed outside the embassy along with makeshift barricades.&nbsp;

Last month, Khalistani supporters allegedly attempted to set fire to the Indian consulate in San Francisco. There was no major damage nor any injuries and police launched an investigation.

“The US strongly condemns the reported vandalism and attempted arson against the Indian Consulate in San Francisco on Saturday. Vandalism or violence against diplomatic facilities or foreign diplomats in the US is a criminal offence," US Department of State Spokesperson, Matthew Miller wrote in a post on X.

A Sikh man in his 20s was charged with stabbing two people during a community event in Southall, west London, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement on Thursday (August 17). Gurpreet Singh, 25, was charged with several offences as he appeared at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court in London. The charges against him include a count of attempted grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent, two counts of GBH with intent, one count of affray, one count of threats with a bladed article, and two counts of possession of a bladed article, the police said on Thursday, as per news agency PTI. “Our urgent investigation continues. We are aware of footage circulating on social media, with people also commenting on what they think happened. We would urge people to avoid echoing or adding to the speculation. Fortunately, none of those injured were seriously hurt and there were no fatalities," he said. As per PTI reports, another man who was in his 20s was also arrested at the scene but was later released on police bail pending further enquiries. The police also said that a female officer at the spot, who was involved in detaining one of the aggressors, sustained a small wound in her hand but did not require medical intervention. UK: Man charged with stabbing two people during Indian Independence Day celebrations in London

The London Police have launched an investigation to find the lone culprit involved in the vandalism of 300 CCTV cameras that were installed in city’s Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) used to detect non-compliant vehicles.

<meta charset="utf-8" />

From April to mid-August, the Met police received &nbsp;339 reports of camera cables being damaged, or cameras being stolen or obscured.

However, local media reported that the actual number could go higher, closing to almost 500.

The Transport for London (TfL) is installing 2,750 cameras in the new ULEZ areas, and already put 1,900 cameras in outer London so far.

Despite the widespread damage, one man has so far been charged by police.

Scotland Yard released an image of the man who is said to be involved in four offences in Hillingdon, Harrow and Uxbridge on June 17.

<h2 dir="ltr">Police working with transport dept to find culprits&nbsp;</h2>

Police Commander Owain Richards said that the Met had "a team of officers investigating and identifying those responsible" and was working with TfL to "identify new ways to prevent further cameras from being damaged or stolen".

“These are clearly unacceptable acts of criminality and we have a team of officers investigating and identifying those responsible.

“We are providing a proportionate policing response, balancing these incidents against the wide range of operational demand and crime we must respond to across London.”

The damage is being attributed to the widespread backlash against the administration’s plan for the expansion of the ULEZ on August 29.

The plan, which was first introduced in 2019 and separate from London’s two-decades-old congestion charge, requires the most polluting vehicles to pay a £12.50 (S$21.60) toll on days they are driven within the inner city.

Its the extension to all of Greater London that sparked a fierce backlash from some living in and around the newly encompassed areas, who face fines of up to £160 for each day they fail to pay.

Most drivers of vehicles that do not meet ULEZ standards – typically the oldest petrol cars from before 2006 and dirtier diesels registered before 2015 – will be liable to pay a £12.50 daily fee after 29 August.

Moscow resorting to riskier & less conventional spying methods

An elderly couple, flying from London's Stansted Airport to Bergerac, France, on Friday (August 12), found themselves charged a staggering £110 (approximately $140) by Ryanair for the seemingly routine task of printing their outbound flight boarding passes.

The incident has garnered attention and concern, shedding light on the complexities older passengers face in navigating the intricacies of budget airlines.

<h2>Mistaken check-in</h2>

As recounted by the couple to The Telegraph, their predicament arose from a simple mistake. The couple, aged 80 and 79, unintentionally checked in for their return flight instead of the outbound one. They realised their error upon reaching the airport.

They explained that the airline's website was confusing, with various prompts for additional services, contributing to the&nbsp;error.&nbsp;"The website was very confusing, they're trying to get you to add on this and that. I didn't realize I was checking in for the coming-home flight," the couple told the Telegraph.

<h2>Airport check-in dilemma</h2>

Faced with the absence of their boarding passes, the couple was compelled to resort to airport check-in. The process came with an exorbitant cost. "At the airport, I tried to get the boarding card, and it said 'check-in is closed' and I needed to go to the desk," the couple&nbsp;recounted.

"They said that's £55 per person. I thought it was absolutely disgusting, but I had no option so paid up. It was very stressful," they added.

Three suspected Russian spies have been arrested and charged in the United Kingdom after a major national security investigation, British media reported on Tuesday (August 15). According to BBC, all three defendants have been in detention since February.&nbsp;

<h2>What do we know about the suspected spies?</h2>

All three alleged spies are said to have been working for the Russian security services and were identified as Bulgarian nationals. They were reportedly arrested earlier this year under the Official Secrets Act by counter-terrorism detectives from the Metropolitan Police, which deals with espionage cases in the UK.&nbsp;

The BBC report identified the three suspects as Orlin Roussev (45), Bizer Dzhambazov (41), and Katrin Ivanova (31). The trio has also been charged with possessing identity documents with “improper intention”, and are alleged to have had these knowing they were fake.&nbsp;

They had passports, identity cards and other documents for the UK, Bulgaria, France, Italy, Spain, Croatia, Slovenia, Greece, and the Czech Republic, said the BBC report.&nbsp;

<h2>Alleged ‘Russian spies’ have lived in the UK ‘for years’</h2>

According to BBC, all three defendants have been in detention since February. What do we know about the suspected spies? All three alleged spies are said to have been working for the Russian security services and were identified as Bulgarian nationals. They were reportedly arrested earlier this year under the Official Secrets Act by counter-terrorism detectives from the Metropolitan Police, which deals with espionage cases in the UK. The BBC report identified the three suspects as Orlin Roussev (45), Bizer Dzhambazov (41), and Katrin Ivanova (31). The trio has also been charged with possessing identity documents with “improper intention”, and are alleged to have had these knowing they were fake. Three ‘Russian spies’ arrested after major UK national security investigation: Reports

Two men were taken to the hospital after being stabbed in a “homophobic attack” outside a south London nightclub, said the Metropolitan police on Monday (August 14). The police are treating the incident that took place on Sunday night as a homophobic attack.

<h2>What do we know about the incident? &nbsp;</h2>

The duo, one in their 20s and the other in their 30s, were on Clapham High Street outside Two Brewers Bar at about 10:15 pm (local time) when they were targeted, according to the Met police. The two men have since been treated in hospital and discharged.

The Met police said that they are searching for a suspect in the attack. Detective Inspector Gary Castle, in a statement, said, “We are acutely aware of the shock this attack will cause members of the LGBT+ community and want to reassure people that an urgent investigation is ongoing to locate the person responsible.”&nbsp;

He added, “We recently announced the reinstatement of LGBT+ community liaison officers for each of our 12 basic command units in London to support and advise on investigations where homophobia is a motive and to ensure the community has a dedicated point of contact to address any concerns they may have.”

So far, no arrests have been made.

Condemning the incident and urging the witnesses to come forward, the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan took to&nbsp;X, formerly known as Twitter, and said, "This is abhorrent. There is no place for hate in London. It’s a huge relief the victims are out of hospital – my thoughts remain with them and their loved ones."&nbsp;

In a statement, a spokesperson for the&nbsp;Two Brewers said that they are "fully supporting the police in their investigation regarding this unprovoked attack and our thoughts are with the victims and their families."&nbsp;

It added, "We would like to reassure the LGBTQIA+ community that the safety and security of our guests remains our number one priority, our CCTV has been handed over to the police and enhanced security measures have now been put in place."

<h2>Two Brewers praised for their response</h2>

The Two Brewers is said to be a popular LGBTQ+ venue and is a cabaret bar and dance club that hosts drag performances, karaoke and even live screenings of the popular TV show RuPaul’s Drag Race.&nbsp;

On Sunday night, the club was hosting a cabaret event as part of its Sunday Funday Cabaret, according to British media reports. After the incident, one of the drag performers at the club praised the staff at the venue for their response.

“The team at The Two Brewers were incredible in dealing with this and keeping us inside the venue safe,” said Mary Mac, on X. They added, “It’s shocking and disgusting that in 2023 this is becoming frighteningly more frequent.”&nbsp;

Another performer also present at the club called the incident “heartbreaking,” on X, adding that “I’m so glad the victims have been discharged”.&nbsp;

“Well done to the Two Brewers for handling it so professionally and not letting it escalate. This is in 2023 people…stay safe,” they added. &nbsp;

The British government is reverting to its old style of accessing high schoolers after it was revealed that close to 30 per cent of students quit their degree course upon receiving A-level grades during the pandemic.&nbsp;

Gillian Keegan, the education secretary informed about the decision saying it will be the first time since 2019 that students will receive "normal" grades.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“During the pandemic, results were higher because of the way grades were assessed -&nbsp;now grades will be lower than last year&nbsp;and more similar to 2019. Pupils and parents might wonder why," wrote&nbsp;Keegan in&nbsp;The Sunday Times.&nbsp;

“It is vital that qualifications hold value so that universities and employers understand the distinction between grades when recruiting, and pupils get the opportunities they deserve," she added.&nbsp;

As a result of the change, almost 75,000 fewer A* and A grades are expected to be awarded this year, compared to last academic year. Consequently, one in five students is likely to miss their first choice of&nbsp;university. Top grades are essential to securing a seat in some of the most prestigious universities.&nbsp;

Authorities in the United Kingdom’s capital city, London, have warned businesses to prepare for “gangs of youths” who may carry out an alleged TikTok-inspired raid at a shopping centre, on Saturday (August 12). The warning was issued a day prior to the south-east London borough amid speculations that a post on TikTok and other social media platforms could encourage people to storm JD Sports to steal items.

<h2>What did the London police say?</h2>

According to British media reports, stores in the Broadway Shopping Centre were sent a letter that said, “Many of you will have seen on social media the potential threat of stores being targeted by gangs of youths who intend to steal stock. They are targeting specific towns and Bexleyheath has been listed for this coming Saturday, August 12.”&nbsp;

It added, “We will be increasing the number of guards within the shopping centre, ensuring that one is positioned at each main entrance. If we see that there is any trouble outside we will shut all entrances until everything calms down.”&nbsp;

The letter also said that while there is a chance of nothing happening, the police have decided to take the matter “seriously” and “cover every eventuality.”&nbsp;

Additionally, a Met spokesperson also said that there will be an “increased policing presence” in the area this weekend after speculation of “anti-social behaviour,” adding that any person “who does take part in criminal activity will be dealt with.”&nbsp;

According to reports, a Section 35 dispersal order has been imposed on Broadway Shopping Centre till Sunday (August 13) at 4:00 pm (local time), in line with which police personnel have the power to stop people entering the area. &nbsp;

Dispersal orders allow the police with extra powers to break up groups of two or more people, where they believe their behaviour is causing a nuisance, harassment or distress to others.&nbsp;

<h2>Why is the police taking such stringent measures?</h2>

The security measures come days after police clashed with dozens of young people in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/oxford-street-chaos-police-arrest-9-after-rumours-of-planned-disorder-on-social-media-624101">Oxford Street</a>, on Wednesday (August 9), in a similar social media-motivated incident. At least nine people were arrested and 34 dispersal orders were issued on Oxford Street, said the police, after rowdy crowds gathered on London’s busiest shopping street and rushed into stores.&nbsp;

Reportedly, the crowd gathered after posts began appearing on TikTok and other social media apps calling for people to raid a sporting goods store at 3:00 pm (local time).&nbsp;

The message added, that it is advised the “dress code” was a balaclava and gloves. The mob of people forced the closure of West End stores and locked customers inside during Wednesday’s looting raid.&nbsp;
