The UK government has introduced a plan to introduce mandatory whole-life sentences for murderers whose crimes are sexually motivated. This move, aimed at the most serious offenders, signifies a significant shift in sentencing policy and is designed to ensure that individuals convicted of such heinous acts never have the opportunity for release.

Expanding the use of whole-life terms

Currently, whole-life orders are exceptionally rare and are typically reserved for serial killers or those whose crimes involve unique aggravating factors, such as abusing a position of power to commit murder. However, the Ministry of Justice now proposes to expand the use of these sentences, making them the default starting point for judges in the most severe cases. The intent is to limit the circumstances in which such orders can be overturned on appeal, reported the Guardian.

Key distinctions: Whole-life order vs life sentence

It's important to distinguish between a whole-life order and a life sentence. While both sentences result in imprisonment for life, a life sentence may include the possibility of parole after a minimum term has been served. In contrast, a whole-life order creates the expectation that the offender will only be considered for release in the most exceptional cases, typically on compassionate grounds.

The government has cited recent cases, such as the murders of Zara Aleena and Sabina Nessa, where this expanded power could have been applicable if in place earlier. Jordan McSweeney, convicted of murdering law graduate Zara Aleena, and Koci Selamaj, found guilty of the murder of primary-school teacher Sabina Nessa, received lengthy prison sentences but would have faced whole-life orders under the proposed changes.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak expressed the government's commitment to ensuring that "life will mean life" for the most heinous criminals. Justice Secretary Alex Chalk echoed this sentiment, stating that whole-life orders would become the expectation for murderers involving sexual or sadistic conduct.

However, the opposition, Labour, criticised the government's approach as falling short. Shadow Justice Secretary Steve Reed argued that the government had allowed many dangerous criminals to evade jail sentences, resulting in overcrowded prisons. Labour pledged to implement tougher sentences and increase prison capacity if elected.

Reports indicate that King Charles III is contemplating a substantial reduction in middle-management staff within the Royal Household, with the aim of streamlining operations and increasing efficiency. The King and Queen Camilla are reportedly dissatisfied with what they perceive as an excess of personnel performing similar roles across various royal residences.

Aiming for modernisation and cost efficiency

King Charles has long expressed a desire to modernise the monarchy and optimise the functioning of the Royal Household. He is acutely aware of the financial burden on taxpayers, with the Sovereign Grant costing £86.3 million (10.85 million USD) in 2020-2021. His plan includes trimming the monarchy's size and adopting cost-effective measures, reported the Independent.

Review of staffing across royal residences

The staff cuts are anticipated to impact "dozens" of employees stationed at Buckingham Palace, Sandringham, Windsor Castle, and Balmoral. The King is reportedly keen on paying competitive wages to a smaller workforce, questioning the necessity of having numerous assistants and duplicative positions. For instance, there are separate kitchen staff for the royals and the supporting staff, a redundancy the King and Queen wish to eliminate.

Queen Camilla's role in oversight

Queen Camilla is expected to play a pivotal role in supervising these changes. She shares the King's belief that a more streamlined and cost-effective approach should be adopted within the Royal Household. Both are of the opinion that having fewer employees who are well-compensated would be more efficient.

Vice Admiral Sir Tony Johnstone-Burt, the Master of the Household, is likely to oversee the restructuring of staff. The goal is not simply to make cuts but to ensure that every member of the payroll offers optimal value. This process aims to balance quality and cost-effectiveness.

King Charles's journey toward a more compact monarchy commenced with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's eviction from Frogmore Cottage, their UK residence. This decision was part of the King's broader plan to phase out subsidised rents for royal family members over the next five years, impacting working royals like the Prince and Princess of Wales, the Princess Royal, and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.

Common people are easily swayed by religion. And for decades, some televangelists, godmen, and preachers have been doing this. The growing obsession with such leaders has made it easier for them to commit horrific crimes and remain untouched by the law. So who are these people?

Migrant children who have arrived in Britain by small boats are being placed in an adult prison which also holds significant number of sex offenders, reported The Guardian.

The report said that cases of such unaccompanied children, many of whom are victims of human trafficking, have been sent to HMP Elmley Prison in Kent which also houses foreign adult prisoners.

The most recent inspection of the prison where foreign nationals are being held also houses sex offenders.

An organisation namied Humans For Rights Network has identified 14 unaccompanied children so far who have been sent to an adult prison. One among them has reportedly spent months in Elmley when they were 14-year-old.

Most of the cases include children from Sudan or South Sudan, who have travelled to UK via Libya. According to the organisation, most of these children are trafficked or have suffered exploitation.

Maddie Harris, of Human Rights Network was quoted by Guardian. She said that children who get sent to adult prisons are among the most "profoundly harmed"

“These children are locked down in their cells, not knowing who to call for help, prevented from adequately accessing legal advice and from challenging the arbitrary decision made about their ages by immigration officials upon arrival in the UK. These are children looking for safety who instead find themselves in an adult prison, denied that protection and exposed to great harm,” she said.

“It is wrong to criminalise these children and dangerous to send them to adult men’s prisons,” said Anita Hurrell, who is head of the migrant children’s project at the children’s charity Coram.

According to the data from the Observer, hundreds of asylum-seeking children are being wrongly treated as adults by the Home Office officials as the children undergo age assessments when they arrive in UK.

“Age assessment has developed into the most monstrous of procedural devices,” said Syd Bolton, co-director of Equal Justice For Migrant Children. Bolton was quoted by The Guardian.

He said that he thought the practice to be a "deliberate barrier to accessing asylum protection and denying young asylum seekers access to children’s services. It is a major tool of the Home Office in discrediting an asylum claim.”

Unaccompanied migrant children being sent to UK jail housing sex offenders: Report

UK: Tory MP and former Minister Nadine Dorries resigns

Director of the British Museum Hartwig Fischer resigned on Friday (August 25) after a series of blunders and failings in its investigation into the theft of numerous items from its collections. The incidents, as per British media reports, have caused international embarrassment and prompted questions about the museum’s systemic failures.

Why did Fischer resign?

Fischer, a German art historian who had led the museum since 2016, announced last month that he planned to step down after his eight-year stint.

He admitted that his response to the warnings that an employee may have been stealing items should have been better and that the failings “must ultimately” rest with him.

“It is evident that the British Museum did not respond as comprehensively as it should have,” said Fischer.

Notably, in an earlier statement the British Museum said that Fischer would step down “with immediate effect,” but later changed it to say that he would resign once an interim leader had been found.

What was the case all about?

Last week, a member of staff had been dismissed after gold jewellery and gems dating from the 15th century BC to the 19th century AD, had been found stolen from a storeroom in the museum. It also was found that items from the museum’s collection were found to be “missing, stolen or damaged” prompting a police investigation.

The police on Thursday (August 24), said that they had interviewed but not charged the unnamed man over the stolen artefacts. Fischer accepted the responsibility for the museum’s failure to respond to warnings about possible theft of thousands of objects in 2021.

“It is evident that the British Museum did not respond as comprehensively as it should have in response to the warnings in 2021, and to the problem that has now fully emerged,” he said, in the statement.

Fischer’s resignation also comes days after he defended the museum’s handling of warnings from an author, academic and antiquities dealer, Ittai Gradel who had raised alarm about the stolen items.

Gradel also went on to dismiss claims by Fischer who said that the concerns were raised about a “small number of items”. He accused the museum of treating him like a “village idiot” and welcomed Fischer’s resignation, reported the Guardian.

According to Gradel’s estimates, up to 2,000 items could have been stolen, including the entire collection of unregistered gems. “They have been lying there without any registration at all for over 200 years,” he told the Guardian.

“If they can’t be identified how can they return them to the museum.” This was amid concerns about the absence of proper record-keeping at the British Museum.

Fischer also said that he later withdrew remarks made about the antiquities dealer and expressed “sincere regret” over the “misjudged” comments.

The United Kingdom's (UK) backlog of asylum applications awaiting a decision has hit a record high in the year to June, the news agency Reuters reported on Thursday (August 24) citing official figures. The interior ministry said that 78,768 applications were made by people who arrived in the country illegally in the 12 months to June, up 19% than the previous year. The backlog of asylums was just over 134,000, or 175,457 once dependents are included. This adds more pressure on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who in December last year pledged to clear the initial backlog of cases by the end of this year. Around 80% of those have been waiting for more than six months. Earlier, the government had said that in the year to June, there were 23,702 initial decisions made on asylum applications, up 61 per cent on the previous year. Of those, 71 per cent were grants of refugee status, humanitarian protection, or alternative forms of leave. Trade negotiations between the UK and India are reportedly in its “final but trickier” stages, the BBC reported.

This week, G20 trade ministers are expected to gather in India under the leadership of Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch.

Whether a trade agreement will be reached before Rishi Sunak’s travel to India in September has been the subject of rumours.

However, the BBC has been informed that the UK government does not anticipate that a complete deal will be reached by then.

The BBC report nevertheless highlights that there are still some “big nuts to crack” before an agreement could potentially be reached in the coming “months.”

The government has long viewed a trade agreement with India as one of the most advantageous bilateral agreements the UK could make after Brexit.

Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson had pledged last year that an agreement would be “done” by Diwali in 2022, but that target was missed.

The UK is eager to reach a deal that might lower import duties on UK exports like cars and whisky, which are currently subject to triple-figure import charges in India.

Because of these levies, UK goods are less affordable in India and less competitive.

Due to British officials' refusal to issue visas to Indian employees, trade negotiations have encountered obstacles in the past year.

The UK has been eager to persuade India to let more UK companies and service industries establish operations there.

The British Chambers of Commerce's William Bain, head of trade strategy, claimed that this would be a “big win” for British companies, particularly those offering travel, business, or financial services.

In the United Kingdom, doctors have performed the first-ever womb transplant, which has been hailed as a huge milestone and "massive success" in fertility treatment.

Local media outlets reported that a 40-year-old woman, who already had two children of her own, helped her 34-year-old sister. The younger sister, whose identity has not been revealed, had been born without a uterus.

Reports have mentioned that both have recovered well after the surgery. The younger sister (receiver of the womb) and her husband are now waiting for several embryos to be transferred.

The procedures happened in February and were carried out by a team of 20 and lasted around 17 hours in adjoining operation theatres at the Churchill Hospital.

This was a first for the UK, but such operations have been successfully carried out globally as more than 90 womb transplants have been performed in nations such as Sweden, the US, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, China, the Czech Republic, Brazil, Germany, Serbia and India.

As quoted by The Guardian, the co-lead surgeon Isabel Quiroga, a consultant surgeon at the Oxford Transplant Centre, part of Oxford University hospitals, said that the patient is "incredibly happy".

She added: "She was absolutely over the moon, very happy and is hoping that she can go on to have not one but two babies. Her womb is functioning perfectly and we are monitoring her progress very closely."

As quoted by Sky News, professor Richard Smith, who was one of two lead surgeons, said it had been a "massive success". He described the joy he shared with the sisters during a clinic one month on.

He said: "We were all in tears - it was a very, very emotional. I think it was probably the most stressful week of our surgical careers, but also unbelievably positive. The donor and recipient are just over the moon."

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has once again refused to put a timeline to stopping the migrants-crossing-the-channel-crisis. Sunak said his plan to stop the boats may not succeed before the next election.

The Tory leader said the migrant situation was a "complex problem" which was costing exchequers and the public a lot of money.

“I want it to be done as soon as possible, but I also want to be honest with people that it is a complex problem. There is not one simple solution and it can’t be solved overnight and I wouldn’t be being straight with people if I said that was possible," said Sunak.

“The current system is both unsustainable and completely unfair, but particularly unfair on British taxpayers who are forking out millions of pounds to house illegal migrants in hotels and local communities," added Sunak.

“It’s not an easy problem to fix. I never said we would be able to solve it overnight – it will take time and we have to attack it from lots of different ways."

While Sunak tempered his expectations, he looked at the bright side saying that the number of illegal migrants crossing the Channel this year had been down for the first time in several years.

Sunak's back-and-forth on migrant crisis

At the start of the year, the Tory leader, amid much pomp, laid out five pledges for 2023, of which one was to stop migrants from entering the UK illegally.

Afterwards, Home Secretary Suella Braverman tabled the Illegal Migration Bill before the House of Commons with the Tory leader simultaneously issuing an ultimatum to illegal migrants crossing the English Channel.

However, Sunak's enthusiasm appeared to take a hit in April when he said his plan to stop small boats crossing the Channel "won't happen overnight". He also pushed the timeline to achieve his goals beyond the general elections.

Notably, former interior minister Priti Patel in April last year brought the "Rwanda Asylum Policy" under which immigrants arriving in the UK through "illegal" means would be sent to the African country of Rwanda to seek asylum.

The immigration crisis reached a peak in 2022 when over 45,000 people entered the UK, breaking the previous year's record by more than 17,000.
