Microblogging site Twitter has officially announced that it will start charging its users to authenticate and secure their account via text messages as a two-factor authentication (2FA) method.

Twitter to charge users for SMS two-factor authentication

Twitter has removed a major security feature for its non-Blue subscribers. The company said it will allow only paid subscribers to use text messages as a two-factor authentication (2FA) method to secure their accounts. "After 20 March 2023, we will no longer permit non-Twitter Blue subscribers to use text messages as a 2FA method," Twitter said in a blogpost Friday.

In order to log in with 2FA, one must also provide a code or security key in addition to their password. By taking this extra step, one can ensure that only they have access to their account. Twitter provides three 2FA options, which include a security key, an authentication app, and a text message.

While saying that the company "continues to be committed to keeping people safe and secure" unfortunately it has seen "phone-number based 2FA be used - and abused - by bad actors." Therefore, to put a stop to it, the company decided that it will no longer allow accounts to enrol in the text message/SMS method of 2FA unless they are Twitter Blue subscribers.

"The availability of text message 2FA for Twitter Blue may vary by country and carrier," it added. It further added that after 20 March, Twitter will no longer permit non-Twitter Blue subscribers to use text messages as a 2FA method. "At that time, accounts with text message 2FA still enabled will have it disabled. Disabling text message 2FA does not automatically disassociate your phone number from your Twitter account," the blogpost said.

What you need to do before 19 March?

Twitter is now sending notifications to its users asking them to disable the text message 2FA from their accounts if they don't want to lose access to their accounts.

DO THIS by 19 March or lose Twitter access, major security feature removed for non-Blue subscribers

Only Twitter Blue subscribers will be allowed to use text messages as their two-factor authentication (2FA) method from March 20, the social media giant said on Saturday (February 18) in a blog. The announcement by the social network, however, has not been received well by many users. Under Elon Musk's leadership, the social media firm has seen multiple changes ever since he took over as the chief executive in October and many of these decisions have been criticised. This is the latest move, which seems to have generated a pushback.

In its blog, Twitter said: "While historically a popular form of 2FA, unfortunately we have seen phone-number based 2FA be used - and abused - by bad actors. So starting today, we will no longer allow accounts to enroll in the text message/SMS method of 2FA unless they are Twitter Blue subscribers." Those who are not subscribed to the Twitter Blue feature will have 30 days to disable this method and enroll in another, it added.

After March 20, it stressed, "We will no longer permit non-Twitter Blue subscribers to use text messages as a 2FA method. At that time, accounts with text message 2FA still enabled will have it disabled." It has suggested such users to "consider using an authentication app or security key method instead". "These methods require you to have physical possession of the authentication method and are a great way to ensure your account is secure," the blog read.

But the update was followed by an outpouring of criticism. "So much for Dear Leader's plan to "equalize" the "lords & peasants system"... y'know, that thing that never existed until he created it," wrote one of the Twitter Blue subscribers. "Damn you guys are getting desperate to find that monetization model huh?" another subscriber wrote. "People who don’t pay dont deserve security on their accounts, that's what you guys mean?" reads one of the many critical posts that followed. Emily Saxton, a YouTube creator with over 144,000 followers, insisted: "All steps for security should be free like every other social media platform."

Update on security feature exception for Twitter Blue users sparks criticism

With the use of multiple highly advanced tools, an Israeli group may have meddled in over 30 presidential elections, a fresh investigation has revealed. Hacking, sabotage and disinformation - spread using bots on social media - could have helped this company, which goes by the name of "Team Jorge". The investigation - carried over six months between July and December 2022 - was published this week by Forbidden stories, a French nonprofit. Journalists from 30 prominent outlets, including Le Monde, Der Spiegel and El País, are a part of the consortium that carried out the probe.

"Jorge" is the pseudonym used by Tal Hanan, a 50-year-old former Israeli special forces operative, who runs the company. "Team Jorge" is understood to be the codename used by his group. A group of undercover journalists tried to understand the method and the madness behind the data use. India is also believed to be on the list of affected countries.

Stunning details revealed during the investigation
In its elaborate report, Forbidden Stories recalls the scandal linked to British firm Cambridge Analytica, which was accused of misuse of data of over 80 million Facebook users to influence elections in the United States. The political consulting firm was involved in the campaign of former US president Donald Trump.

The Forbidden Stories, however, pointed out that many of the culprits may have escaped the aftermath when the scandal was revealed. A prominent whistleblower in the matter - Brittany Kaiser - said that hackers were a team in charge of “opposition research". She is the company’s former development director. These mysterious hackers have been referred to as “Israeli black ops” in an internal email by Alexander Nix, former CEO of Cambridge Analytica, and their boss has been referred to by the alias "Jorge".

The report also talks about continuing the disinformation investigation by Indian journalist Gauri Lankesh, who was murdered in 2017 in Bengaluru."Almost five years after the Cambridge Analytica scandal, journalists from the Forbidden Stories consortium managed to identify and track down Jorge. Using dubious methods, the Israeli 'consultant' still goes by this same pseudonym and continues to sell his influence and manipulation services to the highest bidder," it reads.

Tools and technology employed by "Team Jorge"
When Jorge was consulted by an undercover journalist, who introduced himself as a representative of an African leader, he sought 6 million euros to help influence or cancel an election. During the subsequent conversations amid the investigation, Jorge revealed details about so-called secret operations. A major controversy in France is said to be related to such operations.

BFM TV, a popular French television channel, recently suspended one of its most prominent figures - Rachid M’Barki - over allegations of spreading misinformation. “Maybe I was tricked. I did not have the impression that was the case, or that I was participating in an operation, otherwise I wouldn’t have done it," Rachid said later on his alleged association with the Israeli company that claims to have journalists on its payroll for various objectives.

Bot networks, false information, and hacking of opponents are other tools that have helped Jorge in his questionable pursuits. He also stressed that apart from advanced technology, he relied on building a narrative.

Another tool that the group has reportedly used is AIMS: “Advanced Impact Media Solutions", which is not searchable on the web. The bot management software is apparently used to "spread stories using an army of avatars hosted in and run with an online platform". The report also cites "a catalogue of over 30,000 automated profiles of virtual people with real accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Amazon, and Bitcoin" with Jorge in 2022 that were a part of his so-called digital inventory.

During his interaction, Hanan spoke of the use of this bot management software to order a sex toy on Amazon so that a politician could be proven to be unfaithful in front of his wife. The AIMS avatars took a hard line against the UK Health and Safety Agency in 2021.

The group also resorted to hacking
Hacking was one weapon often used against targets. Unaware that his conversation with the reporters was being recorded, Hanan also revealed how the private messaging systems of several high-level African officials were hacked. They targeted Gmail and Telegram accounts during such operations. "Once inside the messaging system of a victim, Jorge was then able to impersonate conversations with their contacts. Jorge proceeded to send messages to the victims’ relatives from their hacked Telegram accounts," the report reads.

The Israeli group is said to have 100 employees globally and "a combination of former intelligence officers and communications and security experts" have confirmed the extent of the activities and the nature of the business.

As India and the United States prepare for elections next year, the stunning investigation has highlighted massive challenges facing social media networks and other platforms over data privacy and spread of misinformation. The Israeli group also has corporate clients.

In a surprising turn of events, Twitter boss Elon Musk on Wednesday said that a new CEO might soon be running the social networking service. Addressing the World Government Summit conference in Dubai virtually, Musk said that by the end of 2023, someone else might be at the helm at Twitter. His exact words as per AFP were, "I'm guessing probably towards the end of this year should be good timing to find someone else to run the company." Reportedly the billionaire has pegged the end of 2023 as the time for Twitter's new leadership. This, as per him, depends on him being able to "stabilise the organisation and make sure it's in a healthy place and that the product roadmap is clearly laid out."

The announcement comes a month after Musk first announced that he is planning to step down. However, since the December 21 announcement, he has for the most part remained silent on the topic.

As per AFP, the Tesla, SpaceX founder has given out a few hints about the kind of leader he is looking for. First and foremost, as per the remark he made in December, the person will have to be "someone foolish enough" to take his place.

On Wednesday (February 15), the chief twit also took to the micro-blogging platform to post the picture of the "new CEO of Twitter", who in his own words is "amazing". The picture is of a dog wearing a sweater that says 'CEO,' and as one user said "i guess he was the only one crazy enough to take the job".

Elon Musk posts satirical picture of Twitter’s ‘new CEO’, announces a leadership change by end of 2023

After his super bowl tweets failed to gain traction, Elon Musk made a large team of engineers at Twitter change the algorithm to boost his Tweets. Can big tech just hit the booster and create a special system for certain individuals? Tech and Business Journalist Adam Hancock joins us to discuss.

Amid the debris and ruins left in the wake of the devastating earthquake in Turkey-Syria, scammers have propped up by the numbers to exploit the humanitarian crisis. The scammers have made elaborate profiles on social media platforms such as Twitter and TikTok, asking gullible netizens to donate money to help in the aid process. A now-suspended Twitter page named "Turkey Earthquake Relief" with only 31 followers to its name had been asking for donations via PayPal. It had $900 in donations but $500 came from the creator of the page to make the exercise look authentic. According to BleepinComputer, while most scammers use phishing links or separate domains to make the ploy work in ordinary circumstances, the current batch is using legit links to trustworthy payment platforms to make their trick look convincing. Other scams include getting donations in crypto wallets which may never reach the ground. On TikTok, the content creators are receiving digital gifts by live streaming the recordings of TV shows chronicling the destruction trail of the earthquake. It is a zero-effort ploy that often brings monetary benefit to the creators/con artists only. Captions like 'Pray for Turkey', 'Donate for Turkey' are used to ask for donations. Watch | Hundreds dead, many trapped as major earthquake jolts Turkey, Syria Meanwhile, some are using distressing photos and videos, from earlier events to drive up donations for their scam. In one particular instance, a TikTok account could be seen posting a photo of a child running in front of a dystopian background with the caption, 'Please help achieve this goal'. However, a simple reverse search shows that the photo had been posted in 2018 on Twitter with the caption 'Stop Afrin Genocide'. What happened in Turkey-Syria? A week ago, Turkey and Syria were rocked by one of the most powerful earthquakes in recent memory that has already taken the lives of over 33,000. In the aftermath of the quake, over 34,000 have lost their lives. Questions have been raised over the safety of the buildings across Turkey which were flattened like a pack of cards. Around 6,000 buildings collapsed in the Gaziantep area - the epicentre of the quake. According to the state media, police have detained over 130 contractors for not following the building codes which led to the death of thousands. WATCH | Drone footage shows the devastating earthquake aftermath in Turkey Miracle rescues Amid the doom and gloom, some cheer has come in the form of real-life superheroes working on the ground to rescue people trapped in the debris. On Monday, five-year-old Aras was rescued from the rubble of his home in the city of Kahramanmaras, 105 hours after the earthquake. Similarly, a young girl, trapped in the ruins for 178 hours or seven-and-a-half days was also rescued by the miracle workers on the ground. Video footage of her rescue shows people cheering 'God is Great' as she was lifted out of the destruction. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

The old blue checks on the verified accounts on Twitter that have not subscribed to Twitter Blue will soon be removed, according to Elon Musk's statement on Friday. Notably, "Legacy verified" accounts on Twitter are those that had been verified through the previous system. However, after Twitter's takeover by Musk, since November 2022, Twitter users with an active Twitter Blue subscription also display the blue "verified" checkmark.

Elon Musk says ‘legacy’ blue checks to be removed soon from Twitter accounts

Twitter CEO Elon Musk seems to be having sleepless nights for weeks now, as worries consume him about his declining reach on his micro-blogging site.

Musk, last week, changed his Twitter account's setting to private to see if that might boost the number of his audience.

The step was taken after many prominent right-wing accounts complained that their reach has reduced after the recent changes incorporated into Twitter.

As per a report published by The Verge, a group of advisors and engineers were asked to assemble in a room at the headquarters of Twitter to find answers to the question that has been bothering him lately - “Why are his engagement numbers tanking?”

The report claims in the meeting, Musk said, “This is ridiculous. I have more than 100 million followers, and I’m only getting tens of thousands of impressions.”

One of the principal engineers of the company said that the declining reach can be a result of waning public interest in Musk's antics.

The internal data of the account's engagement and a Google Trends chart were shared with Musk by the employees. Last April, Musk was told that he is at the “peak” of his popularity in search rankings, which was reflected in his score of “100.”

Today, Musk stands at a score of nine. Previously, engineers had investigated if the engagement of the account is being artificially restricted, however, no evidence was found that claimed that algorithm was biased against Musk.

The news did not go down well with Musk, who told the engineer, “You’re fired, you’re fired”.

As per a current worker, Musk has asked employees to track the number of times each of his tweets is recommended, the report stated.

Seven weeks have passed since public view counts have been added to Twitter for every tweet. When the feature was introduced, Musk had promised that this would world understand how vibrant is the social media platform.

“Shows how much more alive Twitter is than it may seem, as over 90 per cent of Twitter users read, but don’t tweet, reply or like, as those are public actions,” Musk had tweeted.

Now two months later, the view counts have given the exact opposite of what was expected out of it and have emphasised on how most posts get very little engagement in comparison to their audience size.

Twitter users were left baffled as to why they were unable to post to the social media platform , after a bug linked to limitations on user activity emerged. Users began reporting that they were receiving 'rate limit exceeded' messages when trying to Tweet, meaning that they had went above and beyond the number of posts or accounts followed within a strict time frame.

Access to Twitter in Turkey has been restored, the Netblocks internet observatory said on Thursday. This comes after talks were held between the company and Turkish authorities about content being posted after a major earthquake this week.

"Metrics confirm access to Twitter is being restored in Turkey following hours of filtering," NetBlocks said on its Twitter account.

Turkey's Deputy Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Omer Fatih Sayan told the Twitter management that the country expects cooperation on fighting disinformation as earthquake relief work continues.

Earlier, quake-hit people in the country were unable to use the social media platform on Wednesday. As per reports, it started when Turkish people thronged on social media and criticised Erdogan's government in its failure to efficiently respond in the aftermath of a catastrophic earthquake that hit the Middle East nation on Monday.

Turkish social media was flooded with remarks from users who were dissatisfied with the state of search and rescue operations in their areas after the devastating earthquake. The Twitter outage occurred as Erdogan visited two of the most severely affected areas in Turkey.

Twitter Chief Executive Elon Musk later said in a tweet that the Turkish government had informed the company that full access to the social media platform in the country will be re-enabled "shortly".

"Twitter has been informed by the Turkish government that access will be re-enabled shortly," Musk tweeted, without providing further details on timing.

The Turkish police has been stamping its authority on social media dissenters. Over a dozen have been detained so far for criticising President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government and its post-quake relief measures.

The report of Twitter inaccessibility was confirmed by AFP news agency as well where the ground reporters could not get their hands on the microblogging site on major Turkish mobile providers on Wednesday. However, the agency reported that Twitter was still accessible using virtual private network (VPN) services, that hides a user's physical location.

This comes in the backdrop of the looming risk at Erdogan's political aspirations ahead of the May 14 election in which the President will eye for an extension to his two-decade rule.

Meanwhile, taking to Twitter, the netblocks.org social media monitor said the social media website was being restricted "on multiple internet providers in Turkey". "Turkey has an extensive history of social media restrictions during national emergencies and safety incidents," the monitor added.

The issue was not immediately addressed by Turkish officials, who repeatedly warned against the circulation of false information ahead of the May polls. At least 11,200 people were killed by the 7.8-magnitude earthquake on Monday and its aftershocks across southeast Turkey and portions of Syria.

According to multiple reports, business Twitter handles will have to fork out as much as $1,000 per month in fees to Twitter or risk losing the gold badge that granted them exclusivity on the platform. Though the details and the release date of the feature are yet to be finalised, the emails sent by Twitter employees to some netizens suggest that the proposal is in its final stages. Social media consultant Matt Navarra shared screenshots of the new proposal which is being called 'Verified for Organisation'. “As an early access subscriber, you’ll get a gold checkmark for your organization and affiliation badges for its associates,” read the screengrab of an email shared by Navarra. “If you’d like to subscribe, Verified for Organizations is $1,000 per month, and $50 per additional affiliated handle per month with one month of free affiliations.” Twitter is reportedly emailing businesses offering gold check mark verification for $1000 PER MONTH! However, malicious actors used the feature to impersonate individuals and businesses, causing millions in losses. Consequently, Twitter stopped the feature, pending better regulations. After fixing the problem, Twitter, in December last year, announced its verification process for organisations and affiliates. The gold badges were rolled out for businesses to verify and distinguish themselves on the platform. Pakistan's veteran pacer Sohail Khan, who last represented the Men in Green in 2017 and is best known for his five-fer versus India in the 2015 ODI World Cup, has been in the news of late. Sohail had an interaction recently, where he said a number of things about Indian cricketers Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Umran Malik, Gautam Gambhir, etc.

Pakistani cricketers -- especially former players -- often make the headlines for their glaring remarks on Indian cricket. Sohail joined the bandwagon when he recently commented on India's young pacer Umran Malik. Speaking on The Nadir Ali podcast, he said, "I feel this Umran Malik guy is a good bowler. I’ve seen 1-2 matches. He runs fast and has kept other things in check as well. But if you think of fast bowlers with speed in excess of over 150-155 kph, I can count 12-15 players right now who play tape-ball cricket. If you go visit the trails organised by Lahore Qalandars, you’ll find many players."

Sohail added, "Iske (Umran Malik) jaise toh bohot hain. Domestic cricket bhari padi hai hamaari. (Our domestic setup is filled with bowlers like Umran Malik). When a bowler comes through in our domestic level, he becomes a bonafide bowler. Like Shaheen, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf… these are bowlers who know their stuff. I can give you plenty of names."

Thus, Sohail's statement on Umran -- where he says such raw pacers are in abundance in Pakistan's domestic circuit -- hasn't been well received by many Indian cricket fans. A Twitterati, named Major Gaurav Arya took note of Sohail's comments and schooled him, reminding him of Javed Miandad's ill-comments on Irfan Pathan on the eve of India's historic tour of Pakistan in 2004. Here's what he tweeted:

"Pakistani cricketer says Umran Malik jaise humare domestic cricket mein bhare pade hain. Javed Miandad said the same about Irfan Pathan. Phir Irfan ne Pakistan mein ja kar Pakistan ki team ka band bajaya tha. Yaar tum log thoda kam bola karo (Pakistan cricketer says there are plenty of bowlers like Umran Malik in our domestic circuit. Javed Miandad had said the same about Irfan Pathan. He then went to Pakistan and proved his worth. Pakistanis should speak less)," the Twitter user wrote.

India's former all-rounder Irfan joined in and gave a befitting reply to Sohail by saying, "Major sahab ese statements de kar inhe attention chahiye. Ignore maariye (Major, they want to get attention by making these statements. Please ignore)."

Talking about the Twitter user's mention of Miandad's comments on Irfan, it was during India's 2004 tour of Pakistan when the then Pakistani coach brushed aside the pacer's threat. Irfan chipped in with key scalps in India's 3-2 ODI series win whereas ended with 12 wickets, at 28.50, to help Sourav Ganguly & Co. beat Pakistan 2-1 in three Tests.

Speaking of Umran, he made a mark at the highest level during IPL 2022 with 22 scalps; the fourth-most by any. Since then, his stocks have risen. While he missed out on being a part of India's 2022 T20 World Cup squad, he has remained in the scheme of things of India's white-ball setup.

Recently, Umran was part of India's 2-1 T20I series win over New Zealand at home. With the ODI World Cup set to be held later this year in India, the 23-year-old will be eager to remain consistent with the ball and be a part of the national squad for the showpiece event.

Damus, one of the Twitter alternatives, has been prohibited in mainland China due to worries that the app contains content that is illegal in the country. Elon Musk tweeted in 2018 that he had secured funding to take his company, tesla, private. The stocks rose but when it was revealed that this was untrue, the stocks of Tesla fell rapidly. Shareholders of tesla argued that this caused billions of dollars in damages and that Musk's tweet constituted of fraud as he misled his shareholders, and tried to squeeze the investors. However, a San Francisco Jury found him not guilty of fraud after a three-week trial.

Ever since Elon Musk assumed the role of Twitter CEO and bought the firm in October, the microblogging service has seen a lot of changes. In the most recent development, starting from 1 February, Twitter users will have the ability to appeal account bans and be evaluated according to the new criteria for restoration for the media platform. This announcement was made by Twitter on Friday.

What are the new criteria for Twitter account suspensions?

Under the new criteria, which follow billionaire Elon Musk's purchase of the company in October, Twitter accounts will only be suspended for severe or ongoing and repeat violations of the platform's policies. As per the new guidelines, Twitter accounts will only be terminated for severe or persistent violations of the platform's policies.

Severe policy breaches include, among other things, participating in unlawful content or behaviour, threatening or instigating damage or violence, and targeted harassing of other users. In place of suspending accounts, Twitter said it will now impose less harsh measures. These less severe measures include restricting the audience of tweets that are against company regulations or requiring users to delete tweets before using the account again.

Musk was criticised in December for banning the accounts of many journalists. UK's crown estate sues Twitter

Twitter owner Elon Musk has come under fire as his social media giant has been sued once again for not clearing rent dues for one of its headquarters buildings in San Francisco, California. Earlier, landlord Columbia REIT 650 California LLC sued the microblogging site while claiming Twitter defaulted rent.

Now, in the latest lawsuit, another landlord, SRI Nine Market Square LLC, alleged that Twitter failed to make payments of about $3.4 million in rent for the month of December in addition to a similar payment for January. Along with the rent payments, the landlord is not also seeking other damages.

The complaint was filed Friday in San Francisco Superior Court wherein the landlord said it drew on Twitter’s letter of credit to try to make up for the missed payments however there is still an outstanding due left to be paid for a whopping sum of $3.4 million.

Columbia REIT 650 California LLC, is also seeking damages which include the back rent, in addition to attorney fees and other costs. In 2017, Twitter agreed to a seven-year lease for the facilities. In the first full year, the monthly rent was $107,526.50 (£89,646) and steadily grew to $128,397 (£107,045) in the seventh year.

On 16 December, the landlord at 650 California Street, which is not Twitter's primary office in San Francisco, sent the social media firm notice that it would be in default if it did not make payment within five days. The complaint claims that five days passed without payment.

Earlier in October 2022, Musk paid $44 billion (£37 billion) for Twitter, and the firm is also responsible for paying the buyout's interest obligations of around $1 billion a year. Musk's Tesla shares, which have lost more than half of their value since he acquired Twitter, are responsible for the majority of his fortune.

Since April, when he began accumulating shares of Twitter, he has sold approximately $23 billion (£19 billion) of the electric car company's stock to pay for the acquisition. According to Forbes, he has even lost his title as the richest person in the world. Twitter did not comment on the controversial rent dues for its San Francisco buildings.
