Let's take a quick look:
Times Washington accused Beijing of espionage
In 2016, the US Justice Department charged Chinese national Xu Jiaqiang with economic espionage and theft of proprietary source code, alleging that the material was intended to benefit China's National Health and Family Planning Commission. Xu later pleaded guilty to the charges. In 2017, former CIA officer Kevin Patrick Mallory was charged with passing classified information to a Chinese intelligence officer. He was later convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Separately, Chinese intelligence officer Xu Yanjun was accused of attempting to obtain aviation trade secrets from US companies. Xu was extradited to the US, convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison. In 2020, US prosecutors accused four members of China's People's Liberation Army of hacking Equifax and stealing personal information belonging to about 145 million Americans. That year, the Justice Department also charged Chinese hackers allegedly working with the Ministry of State Security with a global hacking campaign targeting intellectual property, business information and COVID-19 research. In 2021, US prosecutors accused four Chinese nationals, including alleged MSS officers, of carrying out a years-long hacking campaign targeting companies, universities and government entities. The alleged theft included information considered economically valuable to Chinese companies and commercial sectors. In 2022, the Justice Department charged Chinese intelligence officers and a US citizen in separate cases involving alleged efforts to spy on dissidents and human rights activists in the United States. Another case alleged that Chinese intelligence officers used an academic institution as cover while attempting to recruit people in the US to support Chinese intelligence objectives. In 2024, US authorities accused China-linked hackers of conducting extensive cyber espionage. The Justice Department charged seven alleged members of the APT31 hacking group, saying the group had targeted political officials, candidates, campaign personnel, businesses and critics of China. Separately, the FBI and CISA said PRC-affiliated actors had compromised multiple telecommunications companies in what they described as a broad cyber espionage campaign. In 2025, US authorities continued announcing cases involving alleged Chinese intelligence activity. The Justice Department charged two people with allegedly carrying out clandestine intelligence tasks for China's MSS, including gathering information about US Navy personnel and bases and attempting to recruit potential military assets. A former US Army soldier also pleaded guilty to attempting to provide national defense information to China, while a US Navy sailor was convicted of espionage and export violations after prosecutors said he sold Navy secrets to a Chinese intelligence officer. In 2026, the Justice Department announced that an American citizen, Thomas Weir Pauken II, had pleaded guilty to acting as an agent of the PRC. Prosecutors said he worked under the direction of people he knew were connected to the Chinese government and helped identify potential intelligence assets in the US. When Trump visited China earlier this year, members of the US delegation and accompanying press were required to discard Chinese-issued items, including delegation pins, credentials and phones, before boarding Air Force One. You know, what they do, we do too. We spy like hell on them, too," said the US president. "I told him, 'We do a lot of stuff to you that you don't know about," he added. When pressed further, Trump said, "I'm talking about spying. The question was asked of me yesterday, I guess, 'What about the fact that China is spying?' I said, ‘Well, it's one of those things because we spy like hell on them, too'." While public appearances between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping projected a cordial atmosphere, tensions reportedly surfaced behind the scenes between American and Chinese media and security personnel covering the high-stakes summit in Beijing. At one stage, a US Secret Service agent assigned to the travelling American press pool was reportedly stopped from entering Beijing’s Temple of Heaven during Trump’s meeting with Xi because the agent was carrying a firearm, part of standard US presidential security protocol. Further complications emerged during Trump’s departure from Beijing, when Chinese officials allegedly prevented members of the US press pool from joining the presidential motorcade to follow the president. Reporters travelling with the delegation said US aides accompanying the media were eventually forced to push through security barriers to regain access and continue coverage of the departure proceedings.

According to the White House press pool, US staff collected all materials distributed by Chinese officials during the visit, including credentials, delegation pins and burner phones.

Trump mocks Biden in first interview after Xi meeting, says he ‘wouldn’t even get’ China sit-down

US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held high-stakes talks in Beijing on Thursday (May 14). Following their “extremely positive” meeting, the US and China released their official statements on the views exchanged during the key discussions. While both hailed the meeting between the two leaders, they omitted the mention of certain claims made by each other. The summit comes amid heightened tensions over Iran and Taiwan, which remained one of the key focus points in the talks, along with trade tensions.
White House on Iran
In an official statement following the Trump-Xi talks, the White House said that the two leaders had a “good meeting”. Speaking of Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, the statement read that the two sides agreed that the strait must remain open to support the free flow of energy. It added that Xi also emphasised China’s opposition to the militarisation of the strategic waterway and any tolls. According to the US statement, Xi also expressed interest in buying American oil. Both nations also agreed that Iran can never have nuclear weapons.“The two sides agreed that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open to support the free flow of energy. President Xi also made clear China's opposition to the militarization of the Strait and any effort to charge a toll for its use, and he expressed interest in purchasing more American oil to reduce China's dependence on the Strait in the future. Both countries agreed that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon,” the White House said.
China’s statement on Iran
Interestingly, China’s statement did not focus on Iran or even mention the country’s name in its official statement released by the foreign ministry. It also omitted any mention of the Strait of Hormuz or nukes. The lengthy statement talked about strengthening relations between the US and China in various sectors and fronts, from trade to diplomacy to military. The only slight mention of the conflict in the Middle East was that “the two presidents exchanged views on major international and regional issues, such as the Middle East situation, the Ukraine crisis, and the Korean Peninsula.”Later in the day, Trump claimed that Xi had offered China’s help to open the Strait of Hormuz as tensions continued in the Gulf region. He added that Xi has vowed not to send military equipment to aid Iran in its war against the US and Israel.“He said he's not going to give military equipment… he said that strongly,” Trump told the “Hannity” show on Fox News, following the talks between the two leaders in Beijing.“He’d like to see the Hormuz Strait open, and said ‘if I can be of any help whatsoever, I would like to help,’” Trump added.
‘Most important issue’ or not?
In an unusual move, Xi gave a blunt warning to Trump over Taiwan in Thursday’s summit in Beijing, warning of a possible fallout between the two nations if the issue is not handled properly. According to the statement released by the Chinese foreign ministry, Xi stressed that Taiwan remains the “most important issue” between the US and China. China even warned the US to exercise “extra caution in handling the Taiwan question”, threatening clashes and conflicts. However, the United States probably doesn’t believe so, as it completely decided to skip the mention of Taiwan in its statements.“President Xi stressed that the Taiwan question is the most important issue in China-US relations. Otherwise, the two countries will have clashes and even conflicts, putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy. ‘Taiwan independence’ and cross-Strait peace are as irreconcilable as fire and water. Both countries agreed that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon,” the White House statement read. Following the talks, Trump called the meeting “extremely positive”, describing the evening ahead as “another cherished opportunity to discuss among friends”. Xi hailed the US President’s visit as “historic”, saying that the United States and China “should be partners” and not “rivals”. Trump-Xi talks spotlight US-China battle for global dominance: Which country is bigger superpower?

During the meeting with Xi Jinping in China, Donald Trump underscored his longstanding personal relationship with Xi, saying their direct communication had helped resolve differences between the two nations over the years. Trump described the relationship as historic and praised Xi’s leadership. Trump said, "You and I have known each other now for a long time. In fact, the longest relationship of our two countries that any President and President has had. And that's, to me, an honour. We've had a fantastic relationship. We've gotten along. When there were difficulties, we worked it out. I would call you, and you would call me. Whenever we had a problem, we worked it out very quickly, and we're going to have a fantastic future together." Highlighting the economic agenda of his visit, Trump noted that several top American business leaders were part of his delegation and were keen to strengthen trade ties with China. Concluding his remarks, Trump struck an optimistic tone about bilateral relations, saying it was “an honour” to call Xi his friend and expressing confidence that ties between China and the United States would become “better than ever before.”
Xi on China-US meeting
In his opening remarks, Xi Jinping said the world was closely monitoring the meeting, describing the talks as a crucial moment that could shape future global stability. "Welcome back to China after 9 years. The whole world is watching our meeting. Currently, a transformation not seen in a century is accelerating across the globe, and the international situation is fluid and turbulent. The world has come to a new crossroads. Can China and the United States overcome the Thucydides trap and create a new paradigm of major country relations?" He said. He also urged deeper cooperation between Beijing and Washington, cautioning against escalating competition between the two nations. He said, “Can we meet global challenges together and provide more stability for the world? Can we, in the interests of the well-being of our two peoples and the future of humanity, build a brighter future together for our bilateral relations? These are the questions vital to history, to the world, and to the people. They are the questions of our times that you and I need to answer as leaders of major countries... I always believe that our two countries have more common interests than differences. Success in one is an opportunity for the other. And a stable bilateral relationship is good for the world. China and the United States both stand to gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation. We should be partners, not rivals. We should help each other succeed and prosper together and find the right way for major countries to get along well with each other in the new era...”

‘We’ve had fantastic relationship’: Trump recalls his ties with Xi during US-China meet

US President Donald Trump is in China for a two-day visit from May 13 to 15 at the invitation of President Xi Jinping amid the ongoing Iran war. Trump came to Beijing after almost nine years amid escalating bilateral tensions over a range of issues, including trade, technology, defence and Taiwan. During the meeting, the major flashpoint was the Taiwan issue more than any other issue, as Beijing has called Taiwan the core of China's core interests, with reunification, even by force. But even after two hours and 15 minutes of meeting on the Taiwan issue, Trump dodged questions on Taiwan after reporters asked. Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday warned US President Donald Trump that both the largest economies could "come into conflict" if the issue over self-ruled Taiwan is mishandled. The Taiwan question is "the most important issue in China-US relations," Xi told US President Donald Trump while hosting him at the Great Hall of the People, China's ceremonial state building, according to Xinhua News Agency. "If it is handled properly, the bilateral relationship will enjoy overall stability. Otherwise, the two countries will have clashes and even conflicts, putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy," he said. In another significant development, Taiwan's cabinet spokeswoman, Michelle Lee, on Thursday emphasised that the US has been continuously in support of the sovereign status of Taiwan, according to Al Jazeera. She added that the US has "repeatedly reaffirmed" its support for Taiwan.
Why is Taiwan important to the United States?
Taiwan is a self-ruled island which is currently thriving in its democracy with a dynamic capitalist economy. It is also one of the largest potential flash points between the US and China, marking the only place which make possible for open warfare between the two powerful militaries. China, around Taiwan, regularly conducts military exercises in an ongoing show of force. For years, successive US presidents have firmly backed Taiwan against pressure from its powerful neighbour, China. However, there is growing unease that President Donald Trump could shift that policy, a move that could have far-reaching global consequences. Taiwan is vital to the American economy, producing more than 90 per cent of the world’s most advanced semiconductors, which are essential for artificial intelligence, defence systems and global supply chains. For decades, the United States has refused to recognise Beijing’s claim over the island and has continued supplying Taiwan with billions of dollars in military assistance each year, including a $10 billion arms package announced last December. However, a fresh $14 billion arms package has reportedly been awaiting Trump’s approval for months. Many in Taiwan are concerned that President Xi Jinping could leverage trade negotiations to weaken US backing or alter the existing status quo. As Assistant Secretary of Defence Ely Ratner noted, Taiwan is situated at a critical point within the first island chain, which anchors a network of US allies and partners, extending from the Japanese archipelago down to the Philippines and into the South China Sea. It is also critical for the region’s security and critical to the defence of US interests along the Indo-Pacific region. Taiwan also plays a key role in maintaining the balance of power in the Indo-Pacific due to its key location. As part of the first island chain, Taiwan helps limit China’s ability to project military power into the wider Pacific. If China were to take control of Taiwan, it could deploy military assets there, restricting US operations and threatening regional allies such as Japan and the Philippines. Taiwan is also central to global economic stability, producing nearly 70 per cent of the world’s semiconductors and the most advanced chips. Any disruption could trigger severe supply chain shocks worldwide. Politically, Taiwan represents a successful democracy in Asia. Its fall would weaken international norms against changing borders by force, damage US credibility with allies, and increase instability across the region. Also read: ‘US, China should be partners, not rivals’: Xi hails ‘historic’ Trump visit

Trump to Meet Chinese President: Long history of meetings between the superpower leaders

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio sparked buzz on social media after he was reportedly spotted wearing a Nike Tech tracksuit while travelling to China with Donald Trump. His outfit has evoked memories of ousted Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro, who was photographed blindfolded in the same attire earlier this year after he was flown to America following his capture. In a post on social media platform X, White House communications director Steven Cheung wrote, “Secretary Rubio rocking the Nike Tech ‘Venezuela’ on Air Force One!” Eric Daugherty wrote on X, “LMFAO! Sec. Marco Rubio was just spotted wearing the Nicolas Maduro "Nike Tech" aboard Air Force One, en route to China with President Trump. Just like Maduro wore when 47 captured him. We love Marco”. The White House also shared the photos, writing, “Full circle moment”. The photo of Marco Rubio followed earlier images shared by President Donald Trump that showed Nicolás Maduro handcuffed and blindfolded in a grey Nike Tech tracksuit after a weekend raid in which the ousted Venezuelan leader and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured by US forces and flown to the United States in early January. Reports and images circulating online showed Maduro wearing the grey tracksuit at the time of his detention. Shortly after the arrest, Trump shared a photograph of Maduro in the outfit, prompting social media speculation that the tracksuit had sold out following the viral attention. Posts also claimed Maduro wore size 3XL. Other accessories he was reportedly seen wearing, including a low-cost sleep mask and noise-cancelling ear protectors, also drew online attention. As the image spread widely across social media, reactions were divided, with some users joking that the outfit could become a popular Halloween costume, while others pointed to a spike in online searches for Nike Tech fleece apparel.

Unprofessional. Larping like he’s Trump without having half the ability to pull of the real thing. He’s always riding someone else’s wave just like back in the Tea Party days.. He larped enough to get into office and sold out. US President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit China from May 13 to 15 after the invitation of President Xi Jinping amid the ongoing Iran war. Trump's visit marks the first visit to China by an American president in almost nine years, which comes at a time of escalating bilateral tensions over a range of issues, including trade, technology and defence. The timing of Trump's visit to China intersects with a precarious US-Iran ceasefire and a dual blockade of the Strait of Hormuz that is driving up energy prices and stopping global economic growth. Ahead of the Trump-Xi summit, China has also pressed Iran to pursue a diplomatic resolution to the West Asia conflict and refrain from resuming hostilities. Ahead of the meeting between the presidents of the two global superpowers, several key questions remain over the future of trade ties, the prospects for resolving the Iran conflict, and whether the Strait of Hormuz blockade will come to an end. On Tuesday, President Trump said if Iran does not accept the terms to end the war and address its nuclear program, the United States will “finish the job". “They’ll either do the right thing, or we’ll finish the job,” he said ahead of a trip to China, which maintains ties with Iran and remains a major consumer of its oil exports. “I don’t think about Americans’ financial situations,” he said. “I don’t think about anybody.” “I think about one thing: we cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon. That’s all.” Trump also said on Tuesday that he does not require the help of China to end the war with Iran, even as the scope for a lasting peace deal diminishes, and Tehran tightened its hold over the Strait of Hormuz. “I don’t think we need any help with Iran. We’ll win it one way or the other, peacefully or otherwise,” he told reporters.
Iran warn US
In response to Trump's warning, Iran’s chief negotiator stated on Tuesday (May 12, 2026) that Washington must accept the recent peace plan of Tehran or face failure. “There is no alternative but to accept the rights of the Iranian people as laid out in the 14-point proposal. Any other approach will be completely inconclusive; nothing but one failure after another,” Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said in a post on X. The war has closed the Strait of Hormuz – through which roughly a fifth of the world’s oil supply previously flowed – stranding tankers and causing energy prices to spike to levels that could sabotage global economic growth.
China & US to talk on key issues
During a visit to China, President Trump and Xi Jinping are expected to hold talks covering key issues, including Iran, Taiwan, artificial intelligence, and nuclear weapons, as they consider extending a crucial critical minerals agreement, according to US officials. They are expected to agree to forums to facilitate mutual trade and investment. China is likely to announce purchases related to Boeing aeroplanes, American agriculture and energy. Officials also indicated that plans for a Board of Trade and Board of Investment may be formally announced at the meeting. The two nations are also set to discuss extending the temporary truce in their trade dispute, which currently permits the flow of rare earth minerals from China to the United States, although it remains uncertain whether the arrangement will be renewed this week. Talks between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping are also expected to address longstanding flashpoints in US-China relations, including Iran, Taiwan, and nuclear weapons. The Trump administration has additionally raised concerns over Beijing’s ties with Russia. Xi, meanwhile, has expressed frustration over Washington’s continued support for Taiwan, which remains the most significant international partner and arms supplier to the democratically governed island that Beijing claims as its territory. Although China has significantly increased military activity near Taiwan in recent years, US officials have indicated that Washington’s policy remains unchanged. Trump’s advisers have also voiced growing concern over the rapid development of advanced artificial intelligence models in China, stressing the need for direct communication channels between both sides to prevent potential conflicts arising from the technology’s use. Also read: How did Marco Rubio, who’s under sanction by Beijing, get permission to travel to China for the first time?

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, US President Trump said that he does not want to talk to China's President Xi "right now" while suggesting that he "could cut off whole relationship" with China.

"I have a very good relationship, but I just -- right now I don't want to speak to him," Trump told Fox Business, a US television news channel.

"There are many things we could do. We could do things. We could cut off the whole relationship," Trump warned while declaring that he was "very disappointed" by China's handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

In a tweet on Wednesday, the US president had said, "As I have said for a long time, dealing with China is a very expensive thing to do. We just made a great trade deal, the ink was barely dry, and the world was hit by the plague from China."

Chinese President Xi Jinping called for cooperation in a phone call with Donald Trump, confirming he would meet the US leader at the G20 summit amid a bruising trade war.

"China and the US will both gain by cooperating, and lose by fighting," Xi told Trump, according to a readout by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.

Trump's tweet came shortly before top US negotiator, trade representative Robert Lighthizer began his appearance before a Senate committee to discuss the status of the trade confrontation, as well as the new free trade agreement with Canada and Mexico.

Trump's tweet sparked a rally on Wall Street, where the multi-front trade battles have repeatedly rankled investors worried about dented corporate profits and disruption to one of the major axes of global trade.

Global markets are concerned about Trump's threat to impose more steep tariffs on China, to cover an additional $300 billion in goods, which could hurt the already slowing Chinese economy and spread the gloom worldwide.

Trump last week threatened to "immediately" jack up tariffs should Xi fail to show at the meeting. The US already has 25 per cent duties on more than $250 billion of imports from China.

In addition to trade, Xi and Trump are expected to discuss US-led efforts to persuade North Korea to give up its nuclear arsenal.

China, US will both gain by cooperating, lose by fighting: Xi to Trump in phone call

Trump administration officials have not made any new plans to send a team to China for face-to-face trade talks although there is much work left to be done to reach a deal, White House trade adviser Clete Willems said on Friday.

"We're talking to them (Chinese officials) every day, but no one's got any trip plans," Willems told reporters on the sidelines of a Georgetown Law School event. When asked about the prospect for future face-to-face meetings, he said: "Maybe. But there are no plans right now."

The governments of the world's two largest economies have been locked in a tit-for-tat tariff battle for months as Washington presses Beijing to address long-standing concerns over Chinese practices and policies around industrial subsidies, technology transfers, market access and intellectual property rights.

Advances in talks drove the White House to indefinitely delay hikes in tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports that were set to kick in on March 2.

Willems said the two countries had made progress in talks but that there was still much more to be done. He declined to say whether Trump would set a new tariff deadline should the talks stall.

Members of Congress and the business community have expressed concerns that Trump is so eager for a deal ahead of presidential elections next year that he may accept an agreement that falls short of addressing key structural issues.

Willems pushed back against such concerns, saying the notion that Trump will settle for a "bad deal" is "totally inaccurate."

US Ambassador to China Terry Branstad told The Wall Street Journal on Friday that Washington and Beijing have yet to set a date for Trump to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping - a sign that neither side sees a deal as imminent.

"Both sides agree that there has to be significant progress, meaning a feeling that they're very close before that happens," Branstad told the newspaper in Beijing. "We’re not there yet. But we’re closer than we’ve been for a very long time."

One complicating factor has been Xi's plans to visit Europe after a meeting of the National People's Congress ends next week.

The Journal, citing people familiar with China's thinking, also reported that after Trump's failed meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un last month, Beijing officials won't commit to a summit until they are sure of a deal.

Chinese officials were surprised Trump walked away from denuclearisation talks with Kim and do not want the same thing to happen to Xi, the newspaper said. For the Chinese, any summit would basically be a signing ceremony, it said.

Larry Kudlow, the top White House economic adviser, gave Fox Business Network an optimistic view of the progress so far.

"It is historic, it is written down, it was agreed to by the Chinese who were here two weeks ago, but it has to pass through the political filter of President Xi and the politburo," Kudlow said. "Perhaps a meeting of the leaders later this month or in April. Perhaps."

Kudlow said the emerging deal would provide "an end to the theft of intellectual property" through forced technology transfers and hacking of computer networks.

"We will get substantially lower tariffs, or maybe an end to tariffs on cars, commodities, agriculture, industrial supplies. We will get an enforcement procedure," he said.

"If the deal doesn't work for the United States, and our long-term interests, whether it's technology, IP, theft, enforcement, commodities, tariffs ... then it’s not our deal."
