An expedition in Peru has led to the discovery of 27 animal species, including a mouse that can swim. Conservation International, an environmental non-profit, carried out the research over 38 days in 2022 in the Alto Mayo landscape, which includes the Amazon rainforest. The region comprises 1.9 million acres of forest and agricultural areas that house a diverse range of ecosystems.

The densely populated area has been relatively unknown to scientists who are aiming to learn more about its biodiversity and ecosystem. They were surprised to find so many new species - four mammals, eight fish, three amphibians and 10 butterfly species.

“We were very surprised to find such high biodiversity in a landscape with so much human influence,” said Trond Larsen, a researcher who led the expedition.

Conservation International said that nearly 48 other new species may also have been found, but need further study to be sure whether they are new.

"Discovering so many new species of mammals and vertebrates is really incredible, especially in such a human-influenced landscape," said Trond Larsen, senior director at Conservation International.

The year 2025 will be filled with some amazing celestial events that you would not want to miss if you love skygazing. From a spectacular planetary parade to a lunar eclipse, meteor showers and Supermoon, there is a lot to gear up for in the new year.

Seven-planet parade

First up in January would be a planetary parade. You could see Venus, Saturn, Jupiter and Mars all together in the night sky. They would remain visible till the end of February. Two other planets - Neptune and Uranus - would also be part of the alignment. However, these two would only be visible with a telescope.

To catch the planets, look up after sunset, at around 8:30 pm local time. Venus, Saturn and Neptune will remain on the horizon for only some time and will go down between 11:30 pm to midnight. Mars, Jupiter and Uranus would stay up all night and slowly start setting as dawn approaches. Mars would be the last to go down.

The planetary parade will turn even more wonderful later on as Mercury joins them. All seven planets will be up, although only a few of them will be visible at a time because Saturn, Mercury and Neptune will be too close to the Sun when it sets.

While the planets will remain in the sky for weeks, the best time to watch them is between January 21 and February 21. The most ideal time to watch them would be the week of January 29 during the new moon.

Moon to block Mars

A lunar occultation is on the cards on January 13 when our moon would block the light of Mars for about an hour. This is the day of the full moon which will occult the red planet. If you carefully stay tuned to the sky, you would see Mars just to the moon’s left which would vanish soon after. This is because the moon would block the light of Mars.

It is an extremely rare occultation and might not be visible everywhere. The timings would also vary depending on where you are located.

Total lunar eclipse

March would bring with it a total lunar eclipse on the night of 13-14. The Earth will come directly between the Sun and full moon, casting a shadow onto the lunar surface. It would start as a partial lunar eclipse at 1:09 ET, at which point you would see the curved shadow of the Earth blocking out the moonlight. It will reach totality from 2:26 am until 3:31 am, changing its colour to orange-ish.

Lyrid and Orionid meteor showers

Two meteor showers will be visible in 2025 - a Lyrid Meteor Shower and an Orionid Meteor Shower. On April 22-23, the Lyrids will put on a spectacular show of shooting stars originating from the constellation Lyra the Harp.

On Oct 21-22, the Orionid Meteor Shower would peak. Chances of watching the shooting stars would be higher since the moon would be nearly invisible.

Supermoon

And towards the close of 2025, a Supermoon awaits us on November 5.

"I still remember the day I had to delete all 'The Devil Wears Prada' and 'Sex and the City' files from my computer. I had saved them to watch on loop with my sister while sitting by her hospital bed. I've lost count of how many times Radha, @sammahmood, and I watched those movies together," Khanna said.

He said his sister loved Hathaway and knew every single line from "The Devil Wears Prada" by heart.

A Systematic Investment Plan or SIP has become one of the key investments in people's planning for their financial future and is believed to speed up the journey towards financial goals.

However, how simple an investment in SIP may sound, in reality, it involves some rules which can really up the game for the investors.

In this week's Money-Wise, we try to understand the golden rules for investing in SIP for building long-term wealth.

Rules of SIP

Rule 555

This triple 5 rule is best for planning retirement savings. The rule states that the investor should retire five years before stipulated retirement, increase SIP by 5 per cent every year, and aim to create a fund of Rs 52.8 million (approx. $620661) by the age of 55.

15x5x3 Rule

As per this rule, the principal amount should be invested in SIP for 15 years, and it should be then extended for the next 5 years and again extended for 3 years to churn a good profit.

18x15x12 Rule

This rule should be implemented when you are doing financial planning for your child. The rules say that the investment should be done before your child turns 18. The monthly SIP deduction ideally should be Rs 15,000 (approx. $176.32) and the investor should target a 12 per cent return.

Diversification of funds is important to bring stability to the investment and ensure growth in investment portfolios.

The investor can diversify funds in these categories: High-Quality Stocks (Large Cap Stocks), Value Stocks, GARP Stocks (Growth at Reasonable Price), Midcap or Small Cap Stocks and Global Stocks.

A Shanghai court has ruled that a man is not required to return 300,000 yuan (US$40,000) given to him by his ex-girlfriend, who made the payment in an attempt to save their relationship after he discovered her affair with his nephew, according to the South China Morning Post (SCMP).

The man, Li, began a relationship with the woman, called Xu, in 2018. However, two years later, Li found out that Xu had been unfaithful to him and was having an affair with his nephew, as reported by the Shanghai Morning Post.

Upset by the betrayal, Li decided to end the relationship. In response, Xu wrote him a letter of apology, saying, “I have deeply reflected on my mistakes. Yes, I’ve cheated on you multiple times, causing you immense pain. I am sincerely remorseful. I will correct my mistakes and compensate you with my sincerity.”

Over the next two days, Xu transferred 300,000 yuan to Li through several bank transactions, hoping to repair their relationship. Li accepted her apology, and the couple stayed together until 2022, when he discovered that Xu was still involved with his nephew.

This new discovery led Li to permanently end the relationship. After the breakup, Xu demanded the return of the money she had given him two years earlier, claiming it was intended as a conditional gift tied to the expectation of marriage. Since they had parted ways and no marriage occurred, she argued that Li should repay the amount.

Li refused, saying that Xu’s repeated infidelity had caused him great emotional harm, and he viewed the money as compensation for her actions.

Xu then took the matter to court, seeking to recover the funds. After reviewing the case, the court ruled in favour of Li. It determined that the money had been given voluntarily by Xu as a gesture to repair their relationship and did not constitute a gift contingent on marriage. After the breakup, Xu demanded the return of the money she had given him two years earlier, claiming it was intended as a conditional gift tied to the expectation of marriage. Since they had parted ways and no marriage occurred, she argued that Li should repay the amount.

Beijing, China A Shanghai court has ruled that a man is not required to return 300,000 yuan (US$40,000) given to him by his ex-girlfriend, who made the payment in an attempt to save their relationship after he discovered her affair with his nephew, according to the South China Morning Post (SCMP). The man, Li, began a relationship with the woman, called Xu, in 2018. However, two years later, Li found out that Xu had been unfaithful to him and was having an affair with his nephew, as reported by the Shanghai Morning Post. In response, Xu wrote him a letter of apology, saying, “I have deeply reflected on my mistakes. Yes, I’ve cheated on you multiple times, causing you immense pain. I am sincerely remorseful. I will correct my mistakes and compensate you with my sincerity.” Over the next two days, Xu transferred 300,000 yuan to Li through several bank transactions, hoping to repair their relationship. Li accepted her apology, and the couple stayed together until 2022, when he discovered that Xu was still involved with his nephew. The court concluded that Li was not obligated to return the money. (With inputs from agencies)

The United States' outgoing Biden administration relaxed H-1B visas' rules which will ease the process of hiring foreign workers for companies and will ensure a smoother transition of people from F-1 student visas to H-1B visas.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the rules which are aimed at providing more flexibility to employers and workers by changing the definition for special positions and exempting governmental research organisations from the annual statutory limit on H-1B visas.

As per the official release, the change will help US employers hire according to their needs of business and remain competitive on a global scale.

The new rules will come into effect on January 17, 2025.

Speaking about the new rules, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas said, “American businesses rely on the H-1B visa programme for the recruitment of highly-skilled talent, benefiting communities across the country."

“These improvements to the programme provide employers with greater flexibility to hire global talent, boost our economic competitiveness, and allow highly skilled workers to continue to advance American innovation,” he added.

Meanwhile, US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Director said, “The H-1B programme was created by Congress in 1990, and there's no question it needed to be modernised to support our nation's growing economy."

The new rules for modernising the H-1B visa programme were announced by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and they are set to come into effect on January 17, 2025

Washington DC, United States The United States' outgoing Biden administration relaxed H-1B visas' rules which will ease the process of hiring foreign workers for companies and will ensure a smoother transition of people from F-1 student visas to H-1B visas. Mayorkas said, “American businesses rely on the H-1B visa programme for the recruitment of highly-skilled talent, benefiting communities across the country." Meanwhile, US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Director said, “The H-1B programme was created by Congress in 1990, and there's no question it needed to be modernised to support our nation's growing economy."
