Bollywood director Omung Kumar, who has directed the Mary Kom biopic by the same name, has defended the casting of actress Priyanka Chopra in the titular role amid renewed criticism on her playing the role of the celebrated Manipuri athlete.

Amid the ongoing controversy pertaining to casting actors from Northeast India for roles from that part of the region—for the sake of authenticity—filmmaker Omung Kumar has now defended casting Priyanka for the job.

In doing so, Kumar reportedly cited examples of other actors taking on similar roles (that did not abide by the authenticity rules) and claimed that he has 'promoted Manipur the way no one else has'.

In ‘Mary Kom’, Priyanka Chopra played the Manipuri boxer, while the Haryana-born Darshan Kumaar played her husband, Onler.

“An actor can mould themselves into any character and that’s what Priyanka Chopra did beautifully. That’s why the film was so effective. I have promoted Manipur the way no one else has, and I am proud of it. I gave a lot of Manipuri actors inroads to Bollywood through the film. The film’s reach also has to be considered while casting. We did look at a lot of Northeastern actors for the parts played by Priyanka and Darshan Kumaar too but no one suited the role. People think Darshan, who hails from Haryana, was from Manipur (laughs). So, if they suit the part, an actor can play any role. Amitabh Bachchan played Anthony Gonsalves without being Christian. If there is a South Indian character in the film, there’s no hard and fast rule that states we have to cast a South Indian actor only in the role,” Kumar reportedly told an Indian daily.

This renewed controversy is based on the recent Olympics triumph of Mirabai Chanu, and comments made by actor Lin Laishram, who had co-starred in ‘Mary Kom’. Both Laishram and Chanu are from Manipur.

Speaking to Free Press Journal, Laishram had reportedly said, “I admire Priyanka for her hard work, she really put in a lot of hours in order to look like Mary Kom but I always felt that casting is an important step in film. I believe in authenticity and inclusivity, so a girl from Manipur or the North East could have been surely cast to represent us...When it comes to playing an achiever from the Northeast a non-North Eastern person is chosen as seen in Mary Kom. On the other hand, why not cast people from Northeast also as normal Indians in all walks of life which we are.”

After several unconfirmed reports regarding the August 6 release of American rapper and record producer Kanye West`s 10th studio album `Donda`, on Monday, a representative from West confirmed the news.

'Donda' was initially announced by Kanye West in 2019 but shelved it later, only to be suddenly revived again mid-July, then bummed all over again.

West held a listening session for the album in Las Vegas on July 22, and then announced another, a larger one at Atlanta`s Mercedes Benz Arena on August 5, which was to be followed by the album’s the following day: that is, August 6.

The latest listening party also doubled as a vaccination opportunity for attendees on Thursday night, reports have claimed. And it was a raging success—according to reports—the album, however, never released on the promised date.

For now, fans of the Grammy-winning rapper are able to preorder the album on Apple Music, which currently lists an August 7 as ‘Donda’(new?) release date. Tidal also confirmed all the featured artists on the album in an Instagram post following the second listening party.

So, is ‘Donda’ new release date August 7? Only Kanye West can answer that question.

For the uninitiated, the album ‘Donda’ is named after his beloved mother, who had died suddenly after a surgery in 2007. It is also touted to be the most musically adventurous and fulfilling album Kanye West has released in many years.

The studio album also features guest appearances from Jay-Z, with fiery verses on a song apparently called `Jail`, sparking rumours of a reunion album by the at-times estranged friends Travis Scott, Lil Baby, Pusha T, Playboi Carti, Baby Keem, Don Toliver, Roddy Ricch and others.

The Madras High Court has lashed out at actor Dhanush for having sought Entry tax exemption on a Rolls Royce car that he had imported in 2015. The Court questioned the rationale behind super-rich actors importing ultra-luxury cars and seeking tax exemption, while the common man pays taxes on everything from fuel to soap, without seeking any exemption. This case bears resemblance to that of actor Joseph Vijay who had been called “anti-national’ by the Court for having sought tax exemption on his imported Rolls Royce. Like Vijay had done in his petition, Dhanush too hadn’t revealed his occupation before the Court.

It is understood that the Commercial taxes department had asked Dhanush to pay Entry tax amounting to Rs.60.66lakhs, against which the actor had approached the Court for an exemption in 2015. Back then, the Court had instructed the Regional Transport Office to permit registration of the vehicle, on receipt of 50% of the Entry tax. Later, following the actor’s submission that Rs.30.33lakhs had been paid, the Court permitted the registration of the vehicle as per rules and regulations. Since then, the writ petition has been pending.

When this case came up for hearing before Justice S.M. Subramaniam on Thursday, he said that actors are entitled to buy even helicopters, but they have to pay taxes. He also added that Actors maybe entitled to file cases against tax demand, but they must have paid taxes in full, immediately after the Supreme Court settled the issue a couple of years ago. He also urged actors to act as responsible citizens, rather than continuing to ply their cars on roads laid with public money(taxes), without themselves paying taxes in full.

When the Dhanush’s counsel informed that the actor was willing to pay the taxes in full and sought permission to withdraw the plea the judge refused, as the matter was pending since 2015. The Judge also made a mention of the Vexatious Litigations, where a case is filed without any serious purpose or meaning(to abuse the Judicial process). He said that cases of this kind prevented the Court from allotting time to genuine cases and issues.

In 2020, actor Rajinikanth (who is also Dhanush’s father-in-law) had approached the Madras High Court over a Property Tax demand by the Chennai Civic Body. The issue pertains to a Property tax demand of Rs.6.5 lakhs made by the Greater Chennai Corporation for the months April-September on the Raghavendra Marriage hall, which the actor owns.

His counsel had stated that once the pandemic broke out and lockdown restrictions were imposed by Central and State Government, Rajini’s marrige hall had remained vacant and was not rented out since March 24th.

It was mentioned that the actor had cancelled all bookings at the marriage hall after March 24th (Lockdown 1) and even refunded the advance money in line with government instructions. The actor stated that he was entitled to vacancy remission and that he had sent a notice in this regard to the Corporation on September 23rd and that there was no reply.

When the Court warned Rajini of imposing costs(fine), Rajini tweeted out that he could have avoided a mistake and reached out to the Chennai Corportation over a Property Tax dispute, rather than approaching the Madras High Court.

Recently, it was revealed that South Indian superstar Suriya-starrer ‘Soorarai Pottru’, which was directed by Sudha Kongara and based on the life story of Air Deccan founder GR Gopinath, will be remade in Hindi, and the team had confirmed the same on social media.

Now, as per a report by an entertainment website, the Madras High Court has directed a stay on the recently announced Hindi remake.

An injunction restraining Suriya’s 2D Entertainment from exploiting the Hindi rights of the film based on the book ‘Simply Fly — A Deccan Odyssey’ authored by Captain GR Gopinath has been issued, claims the report.

The Tamil film was made by Guneet Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment and Suriya’s 2D Entertainment. Sikhya Entertainment had reportedly approached the Madras High Court against the Suriya’s company over the rights of the film, including the Hindi remake.

“Sikhya Entertainment and 2D Entertainment had made Soorarai Pottru together, and they were supposed to make the Hindi film together, too. Just a few days back, sharing the Hindi remake news on Twitter, Suriya had written, “Excited to announce our association with @Abundantia_Ent lead by @vikramix for #SooraraiPottru in Hindi, Directed by #SudhaKongara @CaptGopinath #Jyotika @rajsekarpandian @ShikhaaSharma03 @2D_ENTPVTLTD.” Excited to announce our association with @Abundantia_Ent lead by @vikramix for #SooraraiPottru in Hindi, Directed by #SudhaKongara@CaptGopinath#Jyotika @rajsekarpandian @ShikhaaSharma03 @2D_ENTPVTLTD pic.twitter.com/ECjSpO9OOT — Suriya Sivakumar (@Suriya_offl) July 12, 2021 ×

British singer-songwriter Lily Allen has performed in front of tens of thousands but she says taking the stage in London's West End is "much scarier".
Allen, who rose to fame in the late-2000s with hits such as 'Smile' and 'Not Fair', is making her theatre debut in '2:22 - A Ghost Story', a supernatural thriller which opened for previews at the Noel Coward Theatre on Aug. 3.

"I know people say 'well, you've been on the stage before', but it is a completely different experience," Allen, who has spent five weeks rehearsing for the role, told Reuters. "I definitely feel a huge amount of pressure."

The 36-year-old said she was settling into a new life in New York with her family and had no acting ambitions when, out of the blue, she was offered the part.

"I didn`t have an agent. I wasn`t looking for projects … And I got a phone call from a casting director saying `would you be up for doing a play?` And I just sort of thought `well, no, not really`. But then I thought about it. And I thought it was such a great opportunity," Allen, who married 'Stranger Things' actor David Harbour in 2020 and has two children from a previous relationship, said.

In '2:22 - A Ghost Story' she plays Jenny, a young woman who believes her new home is haunted. Her conviction causes tension in her relationship with her rationalist husband Sam (Hadley Fraser). Julia Chan and Jake Wood are also co-star.

Writer Danny Robins, who also makes his West End debut with the play, said the story was inspired by a friend`s "really credible" account of a supernatural encounter.

"You know, there`s a reason why we`ve believed in ghosts since prehistoric times," he said. "Death is this big, scary, horrible thing, this idea that we just all cease to exist. So we need ghosts in our lives."
'2:22 - A Ghost Story' opens to the public on Aug. 12 and will be staged until Oct. 16.

Britney Spears' father, Jamie Spears, had disapproved of her travelling to Hawaii last month, her attorney said in latest court documents.

On Thursday, Mathew Rosengart, Britney’s attorney, argued that even though he gave in later, the objection shows as to why removing him from her conservatorship is a matter of urgent importance.

Rosengart cited the dispute in the aforementioned application filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, asking that a September 29 hearing on the global pop star's request to suspend her father as conservator of her estate be moved up.

“In short, although a two-month wait for a hearing on the Petition may not seem significant in the context of 13 years, Ms. Spears should not be forced to continue feel traumatized, lose sleep, and suffer further. Every day matters,” said the attorney in these court papers.

He went on to add that the "immediate suspension" of Jamie Spears "would be the most effective interim remedy, in the best interests of Ms. Spears."

Spears."
The ‘Free Guy’ star Ryan Reynolds has revealed in a recent interview that his wife Blake Lively has written a few lines for a number of his films, including in the ‘Deadpool’ franchise.

“I write on a lot of my movies. It's been a survival mechanism for me for a long time. Sometimes I'm credited, sometimes I'm not… There's a lot of A++ writing that I've done that was actually Blake — that Blake would jump in, grab the keyboard, and 'What about this?' And I'd be like, 'That's incredible’,” Reynolds reportedly said.

Reynolds went on to say that he's tried to give his wife credit before but to no avail.

“And you know, it's funny. I don't know. Maybe it's 'cause there's inherent sexism in the business — I will say that a lot of times, 'She wrote that — Blake like, wrote that not me. That was was her.' And it's like, they still, later on, repeat the story as I wrote it. So she's a really talented, multi-hyphenate kind of person in this, you know, weird burgoo of an entertainment industry that we work in, and she's helped me so much — in Deadpool, all kinds of movies that have been big successes. She's always got a lot of bricks in that wall,” he added.

In his classic hilarious style, Ryan Reynolds concluded by saying, “Well, I mean, it is an obvious perk, which, you know, [I'm] not complaining about that, or the sex.”

Last year, Amanda Kloots left devastated after she lost her husband and Broadway actor husband, Nick Cordero, due to complications from COVID-19. Now, after a year Kloots is moving on in her life.

In her bestselling memoir—one of the first major memoirs of and about the Covid era—‘Live Your Life: My Story of Loving and Losing Nick Cordero’, Amanda talks about the various facets of her relationship with Nick, among other things.

“It was one of those conversations that sparks a connection, a real bond," she writes in her book. “We ended up talking for hours –it felt like a movie scene where the time passes in slow motion for two characters, while the world all around them continues moving at a usual pace... People came in and out of the scene around us, but we kept coming back to this deep conversation until we suddenly realized it was two o’clock in the morning.”

She went on to say that people around her were asking her to wait it out. “Everyone told me that it was too soon to be dating someone. That I needed time alone to heal and figure things out -- Nick said that more than anyone. But I always told them that being with Nick made me happy, and at that time, I needed to do things that made me happy,” said Amanda in her best-selling memoir.

“Nick and I were very different people. Nick always said 'too different.' We didn’t see the world, marriage, and family the same… We had many arguments about it. We had our ups and downs. We fought. We broke up twice,” she revealed.

"When Nick first said he was feeling fatigued on Friday morning, I thought, 'Yeah, me, too,'" she writes. "COVID was in the back of our minds at this point, of course. It was on everyone’s mind. But he had none of the symptoms. He had no preexisting conditions. He was forty-one years old,” she said, not knowing what lies ahead.

As positive reviews start to pour in for James Gunn's superhero film ‘The Suicide Squad’, some people have allegedly started to review-bomb his movie on various review-aggregation websites.

For the uninitiated, review bombing is the act of groups or individuals going on movie-based sites with user-review features and drop negative reviews on purpose that may not be related to the quality of the film.

According to a fan tweet to the director, ‘The Suicide Squad’ is apparently on the receiving end of review-bombing.
Tagging James Gunn, a fan wrote on Twitter, “I hear The Suicide Squad is being review-bombed by the Snyder Cut crew. Why? Because something shows a movie can be dark as well as fun and actually have some personality in its characters? @JamesGunn hasn’t let me down yet (sic).”

To which, the ace director replied, saying, “I’ll live - stuff like this means nothing in the big picture. (And important to point out most the SnyderCut fans have been supportive, it’s only a few who feel it’s worthwhile spending their time doing stuff like this.)”

In a recent Instagram post, global pop star Britney Spears—who has been making headlines over her conservatorship battle with father Jamie Spears—narrated an incident related to her being locked in a bathroom before being set free.

And now, fans cannot help but draw comparisons with her current scenario: it’s a metaphor for her life, fans opine. And Miley Cyrus agrees.

The post, which is a picture of a door left ajar, describes her incident in great detail. “At 2am I decided to take a bath 🛁 !!!! I got a new scented lotion from Victoria’s Secret and I wanted to wear it because it helps me sleep better !!!! I went to the bathroom and looked at my leftover coffee from earlier in the morning and said “gross” but didn’t throw it away and then I looked for my face wash but couldn’t find it anywhere !!!! I was caught up in my head looking for it for about 15 minutes and then realized it’s probably in the other bathroom … then I went to leave and the door was locked 🔒 …” a part of her lengthy caption read.

“I thought ok well it’s a bathroom, I can open the damn door 🚪 … no, the lock was stuck !!!! I got locked in the fucking bathroom and my boyfriend was sleeping 😴 … even if there are earthquakes he doesn't wake up 😂🙄😬 !!! I screamed “HEYYYYY!!!! Come open this stupid door !!!!” …. silence … the fourth time he gets up and says “What’s wrong?” ... I said “I’m in here and I can’t get out,” she added.
