Pete Davidson rents an entire theatre to treat fans with ‘Suicide Squad’ screening

'The Suicide Squad,' the R-rated comic book adaptation directed by James Gunn, was underwhelmed in its box office debut, collecting $26.5 million from 4,002 North American theatres.

Those ticket sales were easily enough to lead domestic box office charts despite falling short of expectations heading into the weekend. There were several factors contributing to its less-than-stellar start, including but not limited to growing concern over the Delta variant of COVID-19, the Warner Bros. film`s hybrid release on HBO Max at no extra charge to subscribers, and its R-rating. An opening weekend below $30 million isn`t surprising, given the ongoing pandemic, but it`s disappointing because "The Suicide Squad" cost $185 million to produce and many millions more to promote globally.

At the international box office, 'The Suicide Squad ' added another $35 million from 70 overseas territories, bringing its global tally to $72.2 million.
'The Suicide Squad' serves as a do-over, of sorts, to the 2016 Warner Bros. movie about a group of expendable super-villains on a deadly mission. It brings back Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman as Col. Rick Flag and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, but original stars Will Smith and Jared Leto didn`t return for the fresh spin on the DC Comics adaptation. Though Robbie and Davis are A-listers, 'The Suicide Squad' likely suffered from lack of star power. Despite the vastly different reception (the article-less 'Suicide Squad,' directed by David Ayer, has a 26% on Rotten Tomatoes), the latest take won`t come close to reaching the ticket sales of the original, which kicked off with $133 million and ended its run with $746 million globally. Of course, that film didn`t open during a deadly pandemic and wasn`t offered simultaneously on HBO Max.

Still, industry analysts thought 'The Suicide Squad' would have a stronger launch because the film has excellent reviews, and its target audience of younger males have been among the most loyal moviegoers during the pandemic. Instead, 'The Suicide Squad' didn't collect much more than its fellow Warner Bros. and DC tentpole 'Wonder Woman 1984,' which generated $16.7 million last December at a time when only 35% of movie theatres had reopened and the idea of a widely available vaccine felt like a far off dream. Today, more than 85% of U.S. and Canadian cinemas have reopened, according to Comscore.

"Currently, this is an unforgiving market," says David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. "Under normal conditions, a strong marketing campaign can overcome a few drawbacks and generate a good weekend. Under current conditions, that isn`t happening."

In a distant second place on box office charts, Disney`s 'Jungle Cruise' dipped 55% in its second weekend with ticket sales totalling $15.7 million from 4,310 venues. The family-friendly film, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, has grossed $65 million in North America and $121 million globally. Disney reported last weekend that 'Jungle Cruise' made $30 million on Disney Plus, but the studio did not provide an update beyond its initial outing.

Universal`s psychological thriller 'Old' landed in third place with $4.1 million from 3,138 locations. After three weeks on the big screen, the M. Night Shyamalan movie has pocketed $38.5 million. The PG-13 film has amassed another $26 million at the international box office, propelling its global tally to $65 million. That`s not a bad result since "Old" cost $18 million to produce. Unlike many summer releases, such as 'The Suicide Squad' and 'Jungle Cruise,' the latest mind-bender from Shyamalan is only available to watch in theatres.

At the No. 4 spots, Disney and Marvel`s 'Black Widow' pulled in $4 million from 3,100 theatres. The superhero tentpole, starring Scarlett Johansson as the eponymous Avenger, has earned $174 million at the domestic box office and $359 million worldwide. It made at least an additional $60 million on Disney Plus, where it premiered on the same day as its theatrical debut, but, like 'Jungle Cruise,' the studio didn`t report digital purchases after its opening weekend.

With this weekend`s total, 'Black Widow' has surpassed Universal`s 'Fast and Furious' sequel 'F9' to become the highest-grossing movie of the year in North America. Still, it ranks as one of the lowest-earning titles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For that reason, 'Black Widow' has been in the centre of a bitter, public dispute after Johansson sued Disney, alleging the film`s day-and-date release on Disney Plus was a breach of contract and cost her tens of millions in backend deals. Disney has claimed the actor received a healthy sum tied to its launch on the company`s streaming service and asserted her lawsuit showed "callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic."

Rounding out the top five, Matt Damon's drama 'Stillwater' posted $2.86 million from 2,611 theatres. The well-reviewed Focus Features film, about a man who travels to France to clear his daughter`s name, has crossed the $10 million thresholds, which is a nice accomplishment for an indie film amid the pandemic.

Duchess of Sussex- Meghan Markle might have received a plethora of birthday wishes as she turned a year older on Wednesday but what caused a buzz on the internet were the unexpected greetings from the British Royal Family and her father Thomas Markle, amid an ongoing family dispute.

Meghan received a bouquet of roses as a birthday gift from her father, but according to Thomas-it doesn`t seem to be melting their icy relationship.

Thomas told TMZ that he sent Meghan flowers for her 40th birthday, along with a personalized card that simply said, "Wishing you a happy birthday and brighter days."He told that the bouquet featured a dozen red roses with 2 yellow roses in the middle, signifying Meghan and Prince Harry`s two children- Archie and newborn Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.

The grandfather of two said he wanted to "incorporate his grandchildren", Archie and Lilibet, in Meghan`s birthday flower arrangement, adding that he wants "to be a part of their lives" because it seems to him "the kids don`t have enough family around them in Montecito."Thomas and Meghan share an icy relationship that turned testier after Meghan and Harry`s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in March.

Thomas further shared that he didn`t hear any reply from Meghan after he sent the gift, but he said that is fine and he is just hoping she likes the flowers.

On a related note, despite reports of family tension, the royal members extended heartfelt birthday wishes to mark Meghan`s special day on Wednesday. Mahesh Babu, South Indian film star, to surprise fans on his b’day

Just recently, it was reported that Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh was roped in for ace film director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next ‘Baiju Bawra’.

“It is Ranveer Singh who has been finalised. An official announcement is in the offing, but yes, a few modalities yet remain to be worked out. Probably post all that, Bhansali will declare. But as things stand today, it is Ranveer,” a source had reportedly told a news website.

And there were strong rumours that his actress wife, Deepika Padukone, was reportedly asked to play a female lead.
But now, an entertainment portal has come forward with a news report quoting a source that claims that the actress was dropped from the project as she was asking for the exact same fee as Ranveer Singh.

“Apparently, Deepika wants the same remuneration as her husband. Not a penny more, not a penny less. In a way, it works out for the better. Four Ranveer – Deepika films in a row from Sanjay Leela Bhansali would have been excessive, don’t you think?” a source was reportedly quoted as saying by the website.

If this report is anything to go by, it will indeed be interesting to see which leading lady replaces Deepika Padukone in ‘Baiju Bawra’.

Bollywood actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui has made it clear—in no unclear terms—that he doesn’t believe in astrology.

And, he calls actors—who change their names because of their belief in the same—‘insecure’ and people with ‘agenda’.

“People work like donkeys... I'm sorry, I shouldn't be saying this, but people who work without using their brains don't get very far. God has given you a brain, if you use it and work hard, then it pays off. I am still unconvinced about the importance of luck. I might change my mind later, but as of this moment, I remain unconvinced,” the actor reportedly said during a recent interview.

“No, I don't believe in anything… Look, I don't have any rings or bracelets; I've never worn them." When he was asked about actors who change the spellings of their names, Nawaz said, "They must have some personal agendas, they must hate their names. I love my name, and this is the only correct way to spell it. Or maybe they're insecure (sic),” he reportedly added.

The actor went on to add that what he does believe in is hard work.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s last releases were Netflix’s ‘Raat Akeli Hai’ and ‘Serious Men’.

His upcoming projects included ‘Jogira Sara Ra Ra’, ‘Sangeen’ and ‘Heropanti 2’.

'The Handmaid's Tale' is nearing its end and recently the show season 4 aired and people responded well to the new season. Earlier, there were reports that makers are eying for season 5 ending.

Now, creator Bruce Miller is responding to speculation and isn’t sure whether the upcoming fifth season of the hit Hulu drama will be it's last or not.
“I’m never looking to end it,” he said in an interview for Deadline’s Contenders TV virtual event, which will be held Aug. 14-15.

“I work with a group of very undifficult people; we have a lovely group of writers, a spectacular group of actors and visiting directors and our crew. What they did this year was amazing. They made this entire show during Covid. We shot the entire thing for two weeks. We wrote every script so that we could change the story so that we could do it with different actors but they made it themselves. I was here in Los Angeles and Liz was up there with executive producer Elisabeth Moss with all that experience.”

Talking about how the pandemic affected him and the show, he said, “The team made an incredible TV show. So I’m not so quick to say, ‘oh, you know, let’s just, walk away.’ I don’t know how you felt about the pandemic, but I certainly learned the things of my life that are pretty rare and working with these people is one of them. So, honestly, yes, I know what the end is and I’m not going to overstay my welcome but I’m also not going to rush off if I don’t have to because as long as I am writing for Elisabeth Moss, you know, it really doesn’t get much better.”

Along with Elisabeth Moss, ‘The Handmaid's Tale’ stars Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Wiley, Bledel, Ann Dowd, Max Minghella, Madeline Brewer, Fagbenle, Amanda Brugel, Bradley Whitford and Sam Jaeger and plot feature a dystopia following a Second American Civil War wherein a totalitarian society subjects fertile women, called 'Handmaids', to child-bearing slavery.

Going to the movies isn`t much fun for deaf people. Screenings in theatres with captions are limited and the special glasses and equipment needed to read them are often broken or unavailable.

'CODA,' a coming-of-age story about the only hearing member of a deaf family, will change that when it is screened with open captions that need no special equipment in all U.S. and U.K. movie theatres and showtimes, starting Friday./

"It couldn`t be more groundbreaking, (just) as the film is groundbreaking in support of the deaf community and the hard-of-hearing community," said Marlee Matlin, who plays a deaf mother in the film. Matlin is the only deaf performer to ever win an Oscar, for best actress in "Children of a Lesser God" in 1987.

'CODA,' an acronym for the child of deaf adults, won four awards at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. It also will be streamed with open captions on Apple TV+, starting Friday.

Apple worked with movie theatre operators to ensure the film would be played everywhere, for deaf and hearing audiences alike, with the captions burned into the print in what is thought to be a first for a feature film release in theatres.

"It is historic. It is huge for all us," said Daniel Durant, a deaf actor who plays son Leo. "This is a day we have waited to see for so many years."
'CODA' tells the story of high school student Ruby who has grown up having to interpret for her deaf father, mother and brother in situations ranging from doctor visits to their small fishing business. The family communicates with sign language, and all three of the deaf characters are played by deaf actors.

It follows 'Sound of Metal' about a drummer who loses his hearing, which earned six Oscar nominations earlier this year, including for best picture.
Durant said while some scenes give the specific viewpoint of deaf people, the appeal of 'CODA' is universal.

"Anyone who watches this can feel connected with it because everyone comes from a family, and every family goes through similar struggles - kids growing up, what are they going to do in their future, becoming independent, maybe they`re moving away from their family," he said.
Writer-director Sian Heder, who is hearing, learned American Sign Language for the project and wanted to ensure the film was accessible to everyone.

"Oftentimes I think deaf people are left out of the movie-going experience because of devices that don`t work and lack of devices in theaters," Heder said.

The filmmakers hope the open caption screenings for 'CODA' will persuade other studios to follow their example and will encourage deaf people to try movie theatres again.

Heder recalled the emotional reaction of a deaf man at a recent screening with the open captions in Gloucester, Massachusetts, where the film was shot.

"He was, like, `I don`t go to the movies. I can`t wear those glasses. They make me nauseous. Half the time they don`t work so I`ve just stopped going to the theater.` He hadn`t seen a movie in the theater in 10 years and he was very moved and excited."

Scottish actor Alan Cumming apparently asked the producers of the famous ‘Harry Potter’ franchise when they had offered him a role in one of the movies.

Cumming was considered for the role of Hogwarts professor Gilderoy Lockhart in 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’—the second film from this eight-part franchise.

“I didn't turn it down. I told them to f--- off!” Cumming, known for his part in ‘The Good Wife’, reportedly told a global daily.

And I had the same agent as Rupert, who of course, they were going to pay more. Blatantly lying, stupidly lying, as well. Like, if you're going to lie, be clever about it,” he went on to explain to the same newspaper.

“I said, tell them to f--- right off. And thought, well Rupert's going to get the part. They made him screen test, and I remember he brought his own wig. And then they f---ing gave it to Kenneth Branagh, came out of the shadows,” Cumming added.

The franchise, based on the eponymous novels by J. K. Rowling and distributed by Warner Bros. for the visual format, released its first installment ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone’ in on November 4, 2001. Over the years, just like the book, the franchise has been a raging success the world over and has turned the three central characters into huge celebrities.

Global music sensation, Beyoncé Knowles, is gearing up for the big release of her collaborative effort with a high-street fashion brand with two unique themes. In this Rodeo-style collection, Queen Bey celebrates the spirit of Black men and women and the impact they had on American western culture. The 58-piece collection will feature a contemporary riff on Americana that includes a denim bodysuit, breakaway denim track pants, cow-print activewear separates and denim chaps, reports claim. Like her other collabs with the brand, this one, too, is all inclusive: sizes from XXXS to 4XL. On Friday, the ‘Halo’ singer dropped an Instagram IGTV post that encapsulates the essence of this upcoming collection by the music royalty. Makers dropped the most awaited new teaser for the upcoming season of the hit series, the new short clip also revealed that the new spooky season will return in 2022. The fourth season's exact release date hasn't been revealed yet. The new season will be telecast almost two years after season 3, which premiered in July of 2019. The teaser shows some major moments and shots from the past three seasons and also includes new footage presumably from the upcoming season, including Eleven being held back by men in black suits and is looking seemingly powerless, a creepy old clock and a new monster. On social media, the caption reads, "See y'all in the upside down.", in the upside-down pattern. 'Stranger Things' season 4 new teaser is here, 2022 release confirmed!

‘The Suicide Squad’ actor Joel Kinnaman has obtained a restraining order against a former sexual partner who is allegedly ‘threatening to publicize false information about’ him that includes allegations of him having sex with her ‘against her will’.

In a long Instagram post on Friday, the actor revealed that he had filed for a restraining order that same morning against a woman ‘who has been threatening to physically harm me and my family and loved ones, and attempting to extort money and other things of value from me’.

The woman in question—who Joel has identified as as Gabriella Magnusson—is a Swedish model, she also goes by the name Bella Davis. Kinnaman claims that he ‘had a brief romantic relationship’ with her in late 2018, but she later ‘resorted to threatening to publicize false information about me — including that I had sex with her against her will — unless I capitulated to her demands’.

According to the actor's allegations to the court, the woman has reportedly demanded money, Hollywood connections, helping her to secure a work visa, a verified Instagram page, a Wikipedia page, a photo shoot with Sports Illustrated and an additional $400,000 USD for an apartment, among others things.

Kinnaman claims he and Magnusson had consensual sex in New York in November of 2018 and again the month after but he ‘did not spend the night together because I had to get up early the following morning for work. The next day she texted me that she was bothered that I had not asked her to spend the night and that I did not check with her to make sure she made it home safely’.

He went on to add that in 2019 and 2020, Magnusson had asked him to meet up and even sent ‘sexually explicit content, but I was in a relationship at this point, so I did not respond’.

Joel Kinnaman is engaged to model Kelly Gale, whom he had proposed to earlier this year.

"At one point, she stated, 'Do you know how much money I would get and how famous I would be if I went to the press? She also made threats of physical violence against me and my family by herself and others, including her brother, a convicted felon, who pointed a rifle at my manager. Since then, her threats of violence against me and my loved ones have become so serious and specific that I felt I had no choice but to seek a restraining order… to be VERY clear so there is no misunderstanding: I stand by all victims of sexual assault,” continued the actor.

“That is not what occurred here. This was consensual sex. And now it is an attempt to extort… More importantly — this is a threat to the safety of my family and loved ones, which will always be my top priority,” he concluded.

Magnusson is yet to comment on the issue, reports claim.

‘The Suicide Squad’ actor Joel Kinnaman has obtained a restraining order against a former sexual partner who is allegedly ‘threatening to publicize false information about’ him that includes allegations of him having sex with her ‘against her will’.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Joel Kinnaman (@joelkinnaman) ×

‘The Suicide Squad’ actor Joel Kinnaman alleges sextortion by a former partner, gets restraining order

On Tuesday, in a court plea, Indian rapper and music producer Yo Yo Honey Singh's wife—Shalini Talwar—has accused him of having regular casual sex with multiple women while he was travelling, and never disclosing to the public that he was married to her, to further his sexual intents and illicit relationships.

Talwar filed a case of domestic violence against the artist, whose real name is Hirdesh Singh, at the Tis Hazari court in New Delhi. She has also sought ₹10 crore in compensation.

The rapper-singer has now reacted to his wife’s allegations through a lengthy statement which he has posted on Twitter in the form of a picture. In it, Singh wrote, “I am deeply pained and distressed by the false and malicious allegations levied against we and my family by any companion/wife of 20 years, Mrs. Shalini Talwar. The allegations are severely odious. I have never issued a public statement or press note in the past despite being subjected to harsh criticism for my lyrics, speculation on my health, & negative media coverage in general. However, I see no merit in maintaining a studied silence this time because some of the allegations have been directed at my family — my old parents and younger sister — who have stood by me during some very difficult and trying times and comprise my world. The allegations are cynical and defaming in nature.”

“I have been associated with the industry for over 15 years and worked with artists and musicians across the country. Everyone is aware of my relationship with my wife, who has been an integral part of my crew for more than a decade now and always accompanied me to my shoots, events, and meetings. I strongly refute all the allegations but will not comment any further because the matter is sub-judice before the Court of Law. I have full faith in the judicial system of this country, and I am confident that the truth will be out soon,” he added.

“The allegations are subject to be proven and the Hon'ble Court has provided me with an opportunity to reply to such allegations. In the meantime, I humbly request my fans and public at large to not draw any conclusion about me and my family until the Hon'ble Court pronounces a verdict after hearing both the sides. I am confident that justice will be served, and honesty will win. As always, I'm grateful for all the love and support of my fans and well-wishers, who inspire we to work hard and make good music. Thank you! Yo Yo Honey Singh,” concluded the rapper-singer.
The plea, filed under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, alleged that Singh had become “extremely arrogant, abusive, harsh and uncaring” to the woman following their marriage in 2011.

Shalini Talwar, in her complaint, also accused the Indian rapper of locking her up for over 18 hours without food and forced her to quit her job.

On Thursday, Brian Boyd was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death of Hollywood actress Lisa Banes, reports confirm.

The rider was reportedly in his unlicensed electric scooter and involved in the hit-and-run death of the ‘Gone Girl’ famed actor. He was well aware that he had hit her, and fled to a repair shop afterward seeking to fix a side-view mirror, authorities reportedly said on Friday.

On Friday, however, Boyd, 26, was released under strict supervision following a court appearance. His attorney is yet to comment on the same, reports claim.

Police have reportedly shared that they have built the case on security videotape showing Banes walking in a crosswalk on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in early June when the actress was struck by the scooter after it jumped a red light, reports claim.

A police officer, who reviewed a video from the scene, said in court documents that ‘the pedestrian and the operator of the electric scooter fall to the ground’. After that, he ‘ further observed the operator stand up, pick up his electric scooter, walk over to the individual lying in the street, and then walk back to his electric scooter and drive away’.

In addition to that, another video showed the ‘operator of the electric scooter ride from the crash location to Bolt Bike Shop … where the operator is observed interacting with employees of the bike shop and waiting for repairs to the electric scooter’ the complaint reportedly said.

The complainant also claimed that Boyd has admitted to police that he was the person in a black-hooded sweatshirt seen in the bike shop video.

For the uninitiated, the actress was rushed to the hospital on June 4 after she was hit by a motorcycle while crossing Amsterdam Avenue at 64th Street, in a crosswalk, on Manhattan's Upper West Side. She was reportedly on her way to meet friends for dinner but planned to stop at her alma mater, the Juilliard School, at Lincoln Center.

Lisa Banes was 65.

The Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) President, Gabrielle Carteris, has made a few observations about Disney’s handling of the ‘Black Widow’ lawsuit by Scarlett Johansson. And it is not in the media giant’s favour.

“Disney should be ashamed of themselves for resorting to tired tactics of gender-shaming and bullying. Actors must be compensated for their work according to their contracts. Scarlett Johansson is shining a white-hot spotlight on the improper shifts in compensation that companies are attempting to slip by talent as distribution models change,” Carteris reportedly said.

She went on to add, “Nobody in any field of work should fall victim to surprise reductions in expected compensation. It is unreasonable and unjust. Disney and other content companies are doing very well and can certainly live up to their obligations to compensate the performers whose art and artistry are responsible for the corporation’s profits.”
In late July, Johansson filed a lawsuit against the company alleging that the studio breached her contract when it released ‘Black Widow’ simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+, a move she claims potentially cost her as much as 50 million USD.

In its initial statement on the suit, Disney lashed out, saying, “There is no merit whatsoever to this filing. The lawsuit is especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Disney has fully complied with Ms. Johansson’s contract and furthermore, the release of Black Widow on Disney+ with Premier Access has significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20M she has received to date.”

“Additionally, we are deeply concerned by the gendered tone of Disney’s criticism of Ms. Johansson. Women are not ‘callous’ when they stand up and fight for fair pay – they are leaders and champions for economic justice. Women have been victimized by pay inequity for decades, and they have been further victimized by comments like those in Disney’s press statements. These sorts of attacks have no place in our society and SAG-AFTRA will continue to defend our members from all forms of bias,” concluded Carteris.

Recently, Women In Film, ReFrame and Time’s Up have also released a joint statement to accuse the Walt Disney Company of a ‘gendered character attack’ in its response to litigation filed by the ‘Black Widow’ star.

Disney VS Scarlett Johansson: SAG-AFTRA President calls it ‘gender-shaming and bullying’ tactic

In a first, a Disney film will have an Indo-American story at its heart.

Yes, you read that right. Disney is releasing a full-blown movie with an Indian-American girl—Rhea Kumar (played by Avantika Vandanapu)—at the centre of its narrative. And, naturally, the director— Manjari Makijany, another Indian—felt the need to shatter the stereotypes sticking to the Indian Diaspora globally.

Speaking to a news agency, Makijany talked about the kind of ‘responsibilities’ she had shouldered while working on this project. “When I came on board for directing Spin I felt responsible and excited at the same time. Excited because it is one of the great opportunities for me as an Indian filmmaker to show our culture and portray the right representation of the next generation Indian-American community to the international audience, to the Disney fans,” she reportedly said.

“I also felt responsible because it is a chance to break all the stereotype that is showcased about Indian community, culturally. I wanted to get those nuances right. For instance, Abhay is playing an Indian immigrant, I made sure his character doesn't speak with a fake American accent! From production design, cinematography and every other department in the making of the film, I attempted to include diversity,” added the helmer.

‘Spin’ revolves around 15-year-old Rhea who is born and bred in America, and is of Indian descent. Over time, she falls in love with her school friend Max, which in turn, leads her towards her life’s true calling.

The director also touched upon the importance of blending East with the West.

“In one of the sequences, Rhea's grandmother is dancing to old Hindi film song 'Jab Chhaye' and in the end, there is a celebration song created by Indian music director duo -- Salim Suleiman. There are other music tracks that are sounding very young and fresh because our protagonist wishes to become a DJ! My responsibility as a film director was to get this very eclectic fusion in the right way,” Manjari makijani reportedly added.

Starring Bollywood actor Abhay Deol, along with Avantika Vandanapu and Meera Sayal, Disney’s ‘Spin’ releases in India on August 15 on Disney + Hotstar.
