A new Texas measure that would let residents sue out-of-state providers of abortion pills is now awaiting Governor Greg Abbott’s signature, positioning the state to become the first in the US to pursue such a crackdown on medication abortion—the most widely used method. Supporters argue the bill strengthens Texas’s abortion ban and protects women and unborn children. Critics, however, warn it’s designed to intimidate providers who legally prescribe pills from outside Texas and encourage citizen-led enforcement. If enacted, the law is almost certain to draw court challenges from abortion rights groups. The proposal allows Texans to sue anyone who manufactures, ships, or prescribes abortion-inducing drugs to a patient in the state, with potential penalties of up to $100,000. Women who take the pills themselves would not be liable. Under the structure, only a woman’s close relatives or the man who impregnated her could claim the full award. Other plaintiffs would receive $10,000, with the remainder directed to charity. The bill also prohibits revealing the identities or medical information of patients, and bars abusers or rapists from benefiting financially from lawsuits. Also Read: 'Not directed against anyone': China rejects Trump’s claim of anti-US ‘conspiracy’ with Putin and Kim These changes, along with limits on payouts for unrelated plaintiffs, helped secure support from major Texas anti-abortion groups.
Texas redistricting battle
The fight over redistricting in Texas has been one of the most bitter political battles in the country this year. The death toll from the catastrophic flooding in Texas has risen to 109, as more than 160 people still remain unaccounted for four days after the flash floods, said Governor Greg Abbott on Tuesday (Jul 8), as rescue workers race against time and worsening weather. As the hopes of finding those missing start to fade, Abbott warned that the list of those unaccounted for could lengthen yet. "Just in the Kerr County area alone, there are 161 people who are known to be missing," Abbott told reporters. "There very likely could be more added to that list," he added.
Texas flash floods: What happened?
The floods, triggered by intense overnight rainfall late last week, tore through central Texas in the early hours of Friday, catching many off guard. Kerr County, which lies in a region often dubbed "Flash Flood Alley," has been the hardest hit—with 94 confirmed fatalities. Among the dead are at least 27 young girls and counsellors who were staying at Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp on the banks of the Guadalupe River, when the floodwaters surged through. They were asleep in their cabins when the river burst its banks. As of Tuesday evening, five campers, one counsellor, and another child not connected to the camp remained missing. "There's nothing more important in our hearts and minds than the people of this community, especially those who are still lost," said Abbot.
Grim search continues amid predictions of more rain
Rescue and recovery teams using helicopters, drones, cadaver dogs, and boats to navigate the waterlogged debris continue the grim search for survivors and the remains of the deceased. However, the work is slow, dangerous, and emotionally taxing."When we're trying to make these recoveries, these large piles can be very obstructive, and to get in deep into these piles, it's very hazardous," said Ben Baker of the Texas Game Wardens. “It's extremely treacherous, time-consuming. It's dirty work, the water is still there,” he added. Heavy rain is forecast to return this week, adding urgency to the search—but officials insist it won't stop the effort. "Rain "won't deter" their efforts, Baker said.

Grim search continues amid predictions of more rain Rescue and recovery teams using helicopters, drones, cadaver dogs, and boats to navigate the waterlogged debris continue the grim search for survivors and the remains of the deceased. However, the work is slow, dangerous, and emotionally taxing. "When we're trying to make these recoveries, these large piles can be very obstructive, and to get in deep into these piles, it's very hazardous," said Ben Baker of the Texas Game Wardens. “It's extremely treacherous, time-consuming. It's dirty work, the water is still there,” he added. Heavy rain is forecast to return this week, adding urgency to the search—but officials insist it won't stop the effort. "Rain "won't deter" their efforts, Baker said.

'Could have saved children if...': Texans slam US authorities for Camp Mystic tragedy

The death toll from the devastating floods that swept through central Texas over the Fourth of July weekend climbed past 100 on Monday (Jul 7), as search crews continued to scour rivers and debris for missing people swept away by torrents of water. As per reports, among the dead were at least 27 girls and camp counsellors caught in the surging Guadalupe River while attending a summer programme at Camp Mystic, an all-girls Christian camp located near Hunt. The camp was housing around 750 people when the floods hit early Friday morning.
"100-year catastrophe"
The scale of the disaster — which US President Donald Trump has described as a "100-year catastrophe" that "nobody expected" — has stunned even those familiar with the region's violent weather. Rainfall over Thursday night and into Friday morning triggered a flash flood that sent river levels skyrocketing by 26 feet (7.92 metres) in just 45 minutes, submerging trees, rooftops, and anything in its path. As per reports, months' worth of rain fell in a matter of hours, triggering the flash flood.Talking to AFF, Louis Deppe, a 62-year-old volunteer aiding in the recovery, said that they were "helping the parents of two of the missing children". Governor Greg Abbott warned that the threat was far from over, "There is still a threat of heavy rain with the potential to cause flooding," he said Monday, adding that the number of fatalities could still rise.
Did Trump's budget cuts make the flood situation worse?
Trump has confirmed he will visit Texas on Friday (Jul 11). At a press briefing, the White House pushed back on criticism linking Trump's past budget cuts to weakened early-warning systems, calling the accusations "a depraved lie." Speaking to reporters on Monday (Jul 7) Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt insisted that "Blaming President Trump for these floods is a depraved lie, and it serves no purpose during this time of national mourning". She said that the National Weather Service, which, as per a New York Times report, had several staff roles vacant in Texas, issued "timely and precise forecasts".

'We're being washed away': Over 100, including dozens of children dead in 'catastrophic' Texas flash floods

US President Donald Trump, on Sunday, labelled the floods in Texas a "100-year catastrophe" that "nobody expected", as he brushed off concerns that his administration's federal budget cuts to weather and emergency agencies had worsened the disaster. The US president also said that he would "probably" visit Texas on Friday. Rescue efforts intensified across central Texas on Sunday after the death toll rose to at least 82 people, including 28 children, and left dozens missing, many swept away from a summer camp on the banks of the Guadalupe River.
The death toll will get worse: Texas public safety chief
Texas officials confirmed at least 40 adult deaths in Kerr County alone, the epicentre of what some are calling the worst flood disaster in state history. Meanwhile, at least 10 were killed by flooding in nearby areas. The death toll is expected to rise further, according to Texas Public Safety Director Freeman Martin, as 41 people remain unaccounted for statewide."You will see the death toll rise today," Martin said grimly at a press conference. Meanwhile, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, in a statement, revealed that "Across the state, in all the areas affected by flooding, there are 41 known missing."
Trump blames Biden, yet again
Speaking on Sunday, President Donald Trump brushed aside criticism that federal budget cuts to weather, and emergency agencies had worsened the disaster. As questions grow about why the public was not warned sooner or why people were not evacuated from the area known to be popular with campers, Trump sought to deflect the blame and claimed that the situation was a "Biden setup". "That was not our setup," Trump said when asked about warnings that failed to reach campers in time. He claimed the situation was a "Biden setup," despite having been in office for around six months. When probed about staff and budget cuts at the National Weather Service (NWS), and his efforts to dismantle FEMA, he said: "FEMA is something we can talk about later." When asked if he would rehire forecasters, Trump responded flatly: "Not." Trump, who has pushed for state-led disaster relief, also signed a major federal disaster declaration, unlocking limited federal aid to the flood-ravaged state.
Camp Mystic: Children washed away as river rose 26 feet in 45 minutes
Among the most heart-wrenching stories to emerge is the fate of at least ten girls and one counsellor who are still missing from Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp where 750 people were staying when the floods hit early Friday. According to AFP, in a terrifying display of nature's power, the river rose to the treetops and roofs of the cabins at Camp Mystic as the girls slept. The Guadalupe River surged 26 feet (eight meters) in just 45 minutes, inundating homes, cabins, and roads. The bodies of some campers have already been found, lodged in trees downstream. Rescuers—including 17 helicopters and hundreds of ground teams—continue to scour the area. Search crews found at least three bodies on Sunday, including one girl from the camp.

'100-year catastrophe': Trump deflects blame, calls Texas flash flood 'Biden setup' as toll crosses 80

Rescuers in Texas, US, continued a desperate search on Saturday (Jul 5) for 27 missing girls from a summer camp along the Guadalupe River after flash floods ravaged south-central Texas. The unexpected flooding has resulted in at least 50 deaths, including 15 children, with some residents describing it as one of the most "catastrophic" floods in the state's recent history. As per reports, 850 people, including eight injured, have been evacuated due to the calamity. At a press conference, Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha confirmed the grim toll and said, "We have recovered 43 deceased individuals in Kerr County. Among these who are deceased, we have 28 adults and 15 children." Multiple victims were also found in other counties, bringing the death toll to 50.
A father's grim search for his daughter
Torrential rains Friday (Jul 4) triggered a sudden rise in the Guadalupe River — swelling 26 feet (7.92 m) in just 45 minutes — and swept away cabins, cars, and entire homes. Among the worst-hit sites was Camp Mystic, a riverside Christian summer camp housing around 750 girls for the Fourth of July weekend.According to Sheriff Leitha, 27 campers remain unaccounted for. US media reports suggest that at least four of the missing girls were dead, citing family members. At the camp, the scenes of destruction are widespread: teddy bears and mattresses buried in mud, cabins torn apart, shattered windows, and personal belongings dangling from tree branches.Talking to AFP, Michael, the father of one of the missing girls, said he drove from Austin in search of his 8-year-old daughter and said he was clinging to hope: "I was in Austin and drove down yesterday morning, once we heard about it," he said, adding that he was hoping for a "miracle."The Heart O’ The Hills camp, just a mile downstream from Mystic, also suffered a tragedy. Its director, Jane Ragsdale, has been confirmed among the dead Saturday."It has been years since we had a flood, but nothing like this," said Soila Reyna, a Kerrville resident who works at a local church. "Nothing like as catastrophic as this, where it involved children, people and just the loss of people's houses... It's just crazy."

Over 20 young girls are missing from a popular Texas summer camp after a flash flood hit the US state early on Friday (Jul 4). At least 24 people have died in the flash flood, said officials. Speaking at a press conference, Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha said that "At this point we're at about 24 fatalities," after devastating floods swept through the region northwest of San Antonio. Texas horror: Flash floods kill 24, over 20 young girls missing from Camp Mystic near Guadalupe River

In a bold legislative move, Texas has passed a landmark law recognising gold and silver as legal tender for everyday transactions, with the law slated to take effect on May 1, 2027. Signed by Governor Greg Abbott in June 2025, the law authorises Texans to conduct financial transactions using gold and silver coins or other designated forms, positioning the state at the forefront of monetary innovation in the United States. This development reflects a growing appetite for financial sovereignty and alternatives to fiat currency, especially in a climate of rising interest in inflation-resistant assets and decentralised finance. The initiative is grounded in Article 1, Section 10 of the US Constitution, which permits states to make gold and silver legal tender, something rarely exercised in modern times.
A push toward monetary sovereignty and diversification
At the heart of the new legislation is a desire to give residents more control over their financial future. The law mandates the Texas Comptroller to develop infrastructure for enabling transactions in precious metals, including electronic systems. This opens the door to a dual-currency system, where gold and silver can coexist alongside the US dollar for retail purchases, contractual obligations, and other payments. Supporters of the law argue that gold and silver offer a more stable and tangible store of value than paper currency, especially amid concerns of inflation and monetary debasement. By making these metals legal tender, Texas aims to provide an inflation hedge and diversify the monetary system. Critics, however, caution that integrating physical assets into mainstream commerce could introduce logistical and regulatory complications, such as verifying metal authenticity and securing storage and transport.
Fintech innovation and crypto implications
The legal tender designation is also expected to catalyse innovation in Texas’s fintech sector. Startups may begin developing digital platforms that facilitate gold- or silver-backed transactions, possibly creating tokenised representations of these metals for easier use in digital commerce. This hybrid approach could blur the lines between traditional finance and emerging digital asset ecosystems. Interestingly, the move may create new competition for cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Unlike crypto, gold and silver have a constitutional and historical foundation as currency, which may make them more appealing to conservative investors and those sceptical of decentralised digital currencies. While this doesn’t necessarily diminish crypto’s relevance, it introduces a parallel system that could attract users seeking stability and legal clarity.
A national trend in the making?
Texas’s bold step may not be an isolated one. Over a dozen US states are reportedly exploring similar legislation, and Texas’s law could serve as a model for operationalising precious metals in daily commerce. If adopted elsewhere, it could spark a nationwide rethink of monetary systems, with implications for central banking, digital currency regulation, and economic policy. As the 2027 implementation date approaches, the financial world will be watching closely to see how Texas navigates this transition. Whether this ushers in a new era of state-level monetary autonomy or remains a symbolic gesture, one thing is clear: the conversation about the future of money in America has fundamentally shifted.

Residents in a small part of southern Texas are voting on whether to turn their neighbourhood into a brand-new city, one that would give Elon Musk’s SpaceX something close to its own government. The new city would be called Starbase, and it sits right where SpaceX carries out its rocket launches in Texas.

What the vote is about?

The election is being held among a few hundred people living in what is now known as Boca Chica. If passed, the vote would officially create a city government, allowing the area to make its own local rules.

Most of the people eligible to vote are SpaceX employees and their families, which makes the outcome almost certain. Starbase is expected to be approved.

How would this benefit Musk?

By creating Starbase, Musk gains a level of control rarely seen in modern-day business. While he won’t technically be in charge, the town would be run almost entirely by SpaceX staff. That means the company, and by extension, Musk would have significant influence over how things are done in the city.
It also gives SpaceX more freedom to manage day-to-day operations, including road closures during rocket launches, without relying as much on outside authorities. According to statements submitted by SpaceX workers, this new setup would improve “logistics and coordination”.

Who’s running the town?

Starbase would be led by people already high up at SpaceX. The candidate for mayor, Bobby Peden, is the vice-president of test and launch operations and has been with the company since 2013. He is running unopposed.
Two others from the company, an engineering manager and a senior director of environmental health and safety, are running for city commissioner roles. Like Peden, both are standing without opposition.

What does Starbase look like?

Starbase is a small area near the Mexican border, close to the Gulf of Mexico. It’s lined with palm trees, prefabricated homes and shiny airstream trailers. A massive golden bust of Musk, nine feet tall, stands in the middle of it all. A plaque below calls him “ELON aka Memelord”.

Not everyone is impressed. Vandals recently damaged the statue, peeling off parts of the foam and fibreglass.

Local concerns over Starbase

Although the town is likely to be created, not everyone is happy about it. Locals have raised concerns about rising living costs and reduced beach access during rocket tests. Since SpaceX moved into Cameron County about ten years ago, rents have gone up nearly 15%.
Community organiser Bekah Hinojosa spoke out against the plan, telling Politico, “They’re claiming they’re bringing economic incentives, but the rent is going up, the roads are crumbling.”
“It is getting harder to live here,” she added. “All this seems to benefit is fancy restaurants with SpaceX clientele.”
Hinojosa said, “It’s the richest man on the planet using us as a testing ground. Elon Musk is on his way to colonising Mars. First, he’s trying to colonise this community.”

A new kind of company town

If the vote succeeds, Musk’s influence over Starbase will look a lot like the company towns of the Gilded Age, where businesses controlled everything from housing to local laws. Though Musk won’t have an official role, his company will effectively run the town.

Measles outbreak in US

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed 607 measles cases across 21 states this year, more than double the total for all of 2023. Texas has reported 481 cases, the highest statewide tally in decades.
"If this trend continues, we may surpass the 2019 outbreak -- the worst in nearly 30 years," said Dr Peter Hotez, a leading vaccine expert at Baylor College of Medicine, as per a report on PTI. "And what's tragic is that these deaths are entirely preventable...This is a global wake-up call..Even wealthy nations are not immune if vaccine misinformation and hesitancy are allowed to spread," Hotez added.

The CDC reports that 97% of current US cases are among unvaccinated individuals or those with unknown vaccine status. Complications from measles include ear infections, hearing loss, pneumonia, croup, diarrhea, blindness and swelling of the brain. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that about 1 in 5 unvaccinated people in the U.S. who get measles will need hospitalization, as per reports.
