Hurricane Beryl made landfall in Texas on Monday (Jul 8); bringing rainfall flooding, storm surge and damaging winds to the region. More than 1.5 million people were left without power in the state as the hurricane disrupted normal lives.

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Beryl’s greatest intensification occurred just ahead of the landfall. It was expected to move northward, where it will transition into a post-tropical cyclone.

A flood warning has been issued for the entire Texas coastline, along with parts of Louisiana. A storm surge is also expected to cause deluge in coastal areas and sweep upstream into Galveston Bay and beyond, reaching the city of Houston.

Hurricane Beryl headed towards Texas, ports shit as it's expected to make landfall

A court granted Texas Governor Greg Abbott's request to exclude Adrian Cortez's expert witness evidence, giving him a victory in his fight to maintain floating buoys in the Rio Grande River to deter migrant crossings.

The International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) staffer Cortez had testified in the case, but Abbott's legal team contested his right to do so.

The request was granted by Magistrate Judge Dustin Howell, who also barred Cortez "from offering expert testimony in this matter."

Regarding how to manage illegal immigration across the Texas–Mexico border, Abbott and the Biden administration have frequently disagreed. Large floating buoys divided by metal sheets that resemble circular saws have been placed in the Rio Grande as part of Operation Lone Star to prevent river crossings.

The federal government sued the Texan authorities in July 2023, claiming that the buoys violated the Rivers and Harbors Appropriations Act of 1899 by obstructing a navigable canal. The State of Texas is contesting this, arguing that the buoys were placed at a spot where the Rio Grande is not navigable.

Cortez, who works for the US branch of the IBWC, was one of the hundreds of experts called upon by the government to testify in support of its argument about water flows from Amistad Dam.

Abbott reacted strongly to the Supreme Court's January decision that allowed federal officials to dismantle razor wire from the border, claiming his state was being invaded.

Judge Howell approved Abbott's motion in his Tuesday-filed ruling, barring Cortez "from offering expert testimony in this matter."

Cortez was supposed to provide proof that would have refuted the federal government's argument that installing floating buoys at the Rio Grande's navigable point violated the Rivers and Harbors Appropriations Act.

The federal government "cannot meet its burden of showing by a preponderance of the evidence that Cortez has relevant and reliable opinions about the decision factors and procedures for water releases from Amistad Dam," according to a court filing from Abbott's legal team.

"Cortez is a fact witness and admitted that he has no expert opinions in this case about the decision factors for water releases from Amistad Dam," Abbott's legal team added.

"Plaintiff cannot meet its burden of showing by a preponderance of the evidence that Cortez has relevant and reliable opinions because, by Cortez's admission, he is either not an expert or has no expert opinions on the topics for which he was identified as an expert witness," Abbott's team concluded.

Governor of Texas Greg Abbott has hailed the arrest of the individual who topped a recently released list of the US state's most wanted illegal migrants. Victor Hugo Chox Gonzalez, 38, was taken into custody on June 13 at Tarrant County Jail after being apprehended in Fort Worth, according to a report from the Texas Department of Public Safety. He was sought for aggravated sexual assault against a minor and indecency with a child through sexual contact. A new list of Texas' Top 10 Most Wanted Criminal Illegal Immigrants was released on June 5 by Republican Senator Greg Abbott, who has been actively working to stop illegal border crossings. The fugitives on the list are all considered armed and dangerous, therefore the public is advised not to attempt to apprehend them. The governor announced Chox Gonzalez's arrest on X. He wrote, "Texas captures the #1 most wanted criminal illegal immigrant. He's now behind bars in Tarrant Co. We continue our search for the other most wanted." According to the DPS, Chox Gonzalez is a Mexican national with connections to Tarrant County, namely the cities of Pantego and Arlington. Also read: Kenya scraps most new tax hikes as hundreds protest He has over 10 years of criminal history in the United States. According to a department press release, he was found guilty in 2016 of assault resulting in the physical harm of a family member and driving while intoxicated with a child under the age of fifteen. Chox Gonzalez was taken into custody in Tarrant County in 2021 on charges of assault and giving false information to law enforcement. His arrest was sought by the Arlington Police Department last year on charges of aggravated sexual assault of a minor and indecency with a minor. Texas Crime Stoppers, which is supported by the Governor's Public Safety Office, pays cash rewards to anybody with information that helps apprehend someone on the most wanted list. The Department of Public Safety stated that Chox Gonzalez's arrest "was the result of investigative efforts and a series of leads by DPS Special Agents assigned to his case." As a result, the department stated that no award will be paid. (With inputs from agencies)

An unfavourable immunological response to casein and whey, two proteins present in cow's milk, is known as a dairy allergy.

Though it can last into adulthood, it is one of the most prevalent food allergies among young kids.

It is imperative for individuals diagnosed with dairy allergy to switch to alternatives to dairy such as soy milk, almond milk, etc.

These alternatives ensure your body gets the desired nutrients without posing a health hazard.

Texas girl dies after eating pizza at school, parents sue alleging medical negligence

"Abortion is not healthcare, it is homicide," believe Republicans in Texas, and they are open to imposing the death penalty on those who provide the procedure.

Delegates to the Texas GOP convention, over the weekend, voted on a 2024 party platform that announces, "Abortion is not healthcare; it is homicide," and wants to overturn a state law that bars prosecuting a person who performs an abortion from being charged with homicide.

Instead, the platform demands laws that would "abolish abortion by immediately securing the right to life and equal protection of the laws to all preborn children from the moment of fertilisation."

In doing so, it's following an uncompromising wing of the anti-abortion movement known as "abortion abolitionists."

Mainstream anti-abortion movements, generally, do not support punishing the women who seek abortions, however, abolitionists insist that if the fetus is a person, then the provider and the patient are both killers and deserve to be treated as murderers.

There was no mention of explicitly punishing the people who try to get an abortion, which means that the fate of abortion seekers remains unclear.

In the past, Texas legislators have gone to the extent of introducing bills which sought to impose death on abortion patients but hit a deadlock.

Now, even if the law does not punish abortion-seeking women, it does bring with it lots of other implications for the Texas law, including cutting off access to in-vitro fertilisation.

Texas is home to one in 10 American women of reproductive age and has long been a testing ground for much of the nation's most restrictive reproductive rights legislation. As per The Guardian, the state's laws about abortion and clinic regulations have even been a model for the passage of such bills in other states far outside of Texas.

The platform for the Texas GOP, which stretches to over 50 pages, also talks about other hot-button issues, including homosexuality, which it describes as an "abnormal lifestyle choice".

It also equates giving minors gender-affirming care as "child abuse."

Among other things, it calls for the reversal of recent military base name changes to "publicly honour the southern heroes." It supports "affirmation of God, including prayer, the Bible, and the Ten Commandments being returned to our schools, courthouses, and other government buildings".

While the Texas GOP has voted on the proposed platform, the votes are still to be counted. The party, as per the Guardian report, hasn't said whether the platform has been formally adopted or made any statement regarding its position on abortion.

In any case, ideas adopted by the GOP are not a law-making agenda. They are not guaranteed to become law—considering that the next time the Texas Legislature convenes will be in January 2025.

Delegates to the Texas GOP convention, over the weekend, voted on a 2024 party platform that announces, "Abortion is not healthcare; it is homicide," and wants to overturn a state law that bars prosecuting a person who performs an abortion from being charged with homicide.

'Abortion is murder,' and Republicans in Texas are open to punishing it with death penalty: Report

A terrifying video of a violent tornado ravaging Texas, United States has surfaced on social media. Recorded by two women stuck in the tornado, the video shows the mighty whirlwind crossing the road while they were driving near Valley View.

Although the duo survived miraculously, the storm snuffed out several lives.

Valenia Gill and Brenda Proctor Dance were returning after attending a singer/songwriter show when nature let all hell break loose. 15 minutes after the show, rain began blowing sideways and the wind sounded across their vehicle.

The horrifying video

In the video, one can hear the hail pelting the car. “(Expletive)’s flying everywhere,” Gill says in the clip, as chunks of debris flew past the headlights.

The clamour of the wind in the video is frightening, and power flashes light up the roadway with the power poles being disassembled. “It’s got my car, I know,” Gill says. “We’re still shaking, my ears are popping.”

The wind then seems to become slightly slower, but still loud enough to scare the women. “Okay, okay,” Gill said, sounding terrified. “I don’t want to go anywhere yet. I’m shaking, the car’s still shaking.”

In the background, one can hear the sirens or emergency vehicles. When a car pulls around them, a power line can be seen down across the street. As the car drives away, one of them says, shocked, “Are they going?”

In a concerning case out of the US state of Texas, more than half of the cats at a dairy farm died after they drank raw milk from cows that tested positive for bird flu. The incident took place a month after the US Department of Agriculture reported the first confirmed case of bird flu in cows.

What we know about the case

Earlier this week, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a report saying that a dozen domestic cats on a farm in Texas died after contracting a highly contagious strain of bird flu.

The cats on the Texas farm had been fed raw milk from cows that turned out to be infected with avian influenza. The report noted that a day after the cats were fed, they began getting sick.

The cats’ eyes and noses began watering as they reportedly kept walking in circles, and their bodies grew stiff. Eventually, the felines lost their sight and coordination and died.

“The cats were found dead with no apparent signs of injury and were from a resident population of 24 domestic cats that had been fed milk from sick cows,” the researchers wrote in their report published in the Emerging Infectious Diseases journal.

This comes as the US is in the midst of a continued outbreak of bird flu after the virus first entered the country in late 2021.

In March, the US Department of Agriculture reported the first confirmed case of bird flu ever identified among cows after several farms in the US states of Kansas and Texas were affected.

Eventually, the virus was also detected on farms in Michigan, Idaho, and Ohio after the infected cows were transported.

The sample collected from the brains and lungs of dead cats, according to the CDC report, suggested “high amounts of virus” in their bodies.

Infected cows experience “nonspecific illness, reduced feed intake and rumination, and an abrupt drop in milk production,” but the cats developed a “fatal systemic influenza infection” after they were fed unpasteurised milk from the cattle, said the report.

“Although exposure to and consumption of dead wild birds cannot be completely ruled out for the cats described in this report, the known consumption of unpasteurised milk and colostrum from infected cows and the high amount of virus nucleic acid within the milk make milk and colostrum consumption a likely route of exposure,” wrote the team of researchers led by pathologist Eric Burrough.

Should we be concerned?

Last month, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said that they found fragments of the bird flu virus in around 20 per cent of retail milk samples.

However, they later said that pasteurised milk is safe and urged consumers to avoid drinking unpasteurised milk in light of the bird flu outbreak.

Dairy herds in nine states have been infected with bird flu and at least one dairy farm worker also contracted the virus, reported Reuters.

The CDC report also noted that the FDA has “indicated the commercial milk supply remains safe,” but also warned that the detection of influenza virus in “unpasteurised bovine milk is a concern because of potential cross-species transmission.”

A woman from Texas claimed that she underwent "very intensive" chemotherapy sessions only to discover that she never had cancer in the first place. Lisa Monk went to the hospital in 2022 for stomach pains, assuming they were kidney stones, the New York Post reported. Tests showed two kidney stones and a mass on her spleen. She underwent surgery in January last year, and doctors removed the spleen successfully, later sent to pathology labs for testing. It tested positive for a rare and terminal form of cancer for the fourth time. Lisa, 39, was diagnosed with clear cell angiosarcoma, which is a type of cancer with a poor prognosis regardless of age and gender, the Mirror reported. Monk said, "It was a blood vessel type of cancer found in the spleen and told me that the most optimistic thing he could say was to give me 15 months." The news left Monk's family, including her two children, distraught. After her second round of "aggressive" chemotherapy sessions, Lisa lost all her hair, and she was left vomiting with silvery skin. She said, "It was a very dark time. I was writing goodbye letters and letters to the grandchildren I would never meet and the weddings I would never attend." ALSO READ | 'Sexual harassment leaves a mark' on humans and statues; German NGO's unique awareness campaign However, doctors revealed that she never had cancer in the first place after a few months of chemotherapy. Monk recalled, "I saw the nurse practitioner first and she just asked me about my symptoms and she was scrolling on the computer while she was talking to me." "She stops talking and has this look on her face. She turned to me and looked horrified and told me she needed to get the doctor and then ran out of the room. She left me alone for about 15 minutes and the doctor came back in. He said a lot of medical lingo to me and then told me I didn't have cancer," she continued. "The doctor then told me that I never had cancer. [At that moment] I looked like I had cancer and I felt like I had cancer as I was vomiting, I was sick and my skin was silvery because of the chemotherapy. The doctor then congratulated me, which bothered me," she said. The correct pathology report, which came in before the second round of chemotherapy began, was a month old by the time Monk found out. A year after the traumatic event, Monk is still struggling to pay hospital bills and is emotionally, physically, and mentally exhausted. “I grieve for my kids for having to even go through something like this in their lives where they thought they were going to lose their mum. I can't take this away from them. I know on paper it only looks like a few months of my life but it felt like a lifetime," she added. (With inputs from agencies)

An Indian-origin man has sued a temple in the United States for $1 million in damages over branding his son with a hot iron rod as part of a religious ceremony last year.

Vijay Cheruvu, a resident of Texas' Fort Bend County alleged that his 11-year-old son was branded with a hot iron rod during a religious ceremony at the Sri Ashtalakshmi Hindu temple in Sugarland, Texas in August 2023.

The lawsuit filed in Fort Bend County stated that the boy suffered excruciating pain and permanent disfigurement.

Cheruvu is seeking over $1 million in damages in the lawsuit against the temple and its parent firm, Jeeyar Educational Trust (JET) USA, Inc.

“I was shocked. I didn’t know how to handle it. My primary concern is for my son’s well-being,” Cheruvu said at a press conference here.

He stated that the temple branded his son on his shoulder in the shape of the Hindu god, Vishnu.

The lawsuit alleges that more than 100 people took part in the religious ceremony at the Ashtalakshmi Temple at Synott Road in Sugar Land in August 2023, out of which, three participants were children, including Cheruvu's son.

Cheruvu's attorney, Brant Stogner, claimed that the boy, who was branded in both shoulders, suffered severe pain and permanent disfigurement and also developed an infection because of it.

The 11-year-old went to the temple along with his mother to attend the ceremony and was branded with the iron rod against his will and without the consent of his father, said Stogner.

He further said that branding, tattooing or scarring a child is illegal in Texas even with parental consent.

"We want to make sure our community is aware of this and want to make sure it doesn't happen to anybody else, anybody else's child or any child at all."

The child was not identified, however, the attorney read out an impact statement from him.

"I was so surprised. I did not know that anything was going to happen like this. I was shocked when they did it on my shoulder and it hurt so much that I almost cried," he said in part.

"They knew what they did was very wrong because they told me to keep it secret from everyone else. But I had to tell my dad when the pain got worse and it became infected," he added.

Cheruvu claimed that his son was taken to the temple by his ex-wife and was branded with the iron rod but the mother was not.

"He goes to see a therapist. He’s so deeply scarred, mentally scarred, and then there’s all the pain," said the father.

Bird Flu case in Texas: A rare case of bird flu in a human has been reported in Texas after the patient came in contact with the cattle, who was suspected to have been infected by the virus.

The announcement regarding the rare case was made after the federal agencies informed about the spread of the virus in dairy cattle across different states, which included Texas.

So, what were the symptoms of bird flu?

The Texas Department of State Health Services informed that only one symptom was seen in the patient which was eye inflammation.

The patient was last week tested and the results were confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention over the weekend.

The patient is now being administered the antiviral medication oseltamivir which, as per the Mayo Clinic, is used for treating influenza A and B along with the swine flu.

According to Texas officials, human cases of bird flu, which are also called H5N1, generally have various symptoms which include mild health issues like respiratory symptoms, eye infection and severe problems like pneumonia. In the worst cases, it can also lead to death.

According to the CDC, this is the second such instance in which a person has contracted the bird flu in the United States. The flu generally infects wild birds, as the name suggests, however, it can also infect domestic species.

In a statement on Monday (April 2), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said, “This infection does not change the H5N1 bird flu human health risk assessment for the US general public, which CDC considers to be low.”

Last week, the CDC, in a statement said that the risk to human health due to bird flu is low in the United States. However, they said that people who work with the cattle are at a higher risk of infection.

A US federal appeals court on late Tuesday (Mar 26) extended its hold on the controversial law in Texas that would allow the state’s law enforcement officials to detain and deport migrants on charges of illegally entering the country from the US-Mexico border.

What did the court say?

The three-judge panel in the New Orleans-based 5th Circuit Court of Appeals voted 2-1 that the Texas Senate Bill 4 (SB4), should remain blocked, in a decision issued overnight.

The court noted that the statutes in the new state law “significantly impair the exercise of discretion by federal immigration officials.”

The decision was made by the same court that blocked the controversial immigration law hours after the Supreme Court overturned a previous ruling from a different panel which had put the law into effect.

The court has also scheduled a hearing on April 3 to review a lower court ruling that last month blocked the law.

“For nearly 150 years, the Supreme Court has held that the power to control immigration—the entry, admission, and removal of noncitizens – is exclusively a federal power,” said Judge Priscilla Richman, who voted in favour of blocking the Texas law.

She also cited the 2012 Supreme Court ruling which had struck down a similar law in Arizona.

Richman noted that whatever the state’s criticisms about the federal government’s “actions and inactions” are, it is the president’s role to decide how to deal with “noncitizens illegally present” in the country.

Previous ruling to be reviewed

Last month, US District Judge David Ezra in the Texas city of Austin, agreed with Democratic President Joe Biden’s administration which argued that the law interferes with the federal government’s power over immigration granted by the US Constitution.

The Justice Department, back in January, sued the state of Texas and its governor to block the law which was supposed to take effect on March 5.
