The US state of Texas sued a female doctor from New York named Dr Margaret Daley Carpenter for allegedly mailing abortion pills to a woman in Dallas despite the ban on the procedure in the state.

The lawsuit, filed on Thursday (Dec 12), alleged that Dr Carpenter sent abortion pills to a 20-year-old woman via telemedicine. It further said that in July, the woman sought medical attention after severe bleeding, which led to the “biological father of the unborn child” suspecting that she tried to end her pregnancy. He later found abortion pills.

The lawsuit was filed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and will make laws of two states (New York and Texas) against each other.

The lawsuit further claimed that since Dr Carpenter does not hold Texas medical licensing, her prescriptions of the pills were unauthorised.

The woman conceived in mid-May, as per the suit, and did not have any life-threatening conditions from the pregnancy. The case detailed that the woman experienced severe bleeding on July 16 and was hospitalised. Her boyfriend was unaware of her plans to abort their baby.

An Indian-origin neurosurgeon in Texas was fined over $2 million for Medicare fraud. The man named Dr Rajesh Bindal falsely claimed that he has performed invasive surgeries when in reality he has never done one. His so-called surgeries involved non-invasive procedures using electro-acupuncture devices.

While announcing the fine on Bindal, US Attorney Alamdar S Hamdani said in a press release that neurosurgeons are among the highest-paid medical specialists in the United States and Bindal's false claims were intended to enrich himself.

Bindal allegedly billed Medicare and the Federal Employees Health Benefits Programme (FEHBP) for surgical implantation of neurostimulator electrodes between March 16, 2021, and April 22, 2022.

These invasive surgeries are reimbursed by Medicare and FEHBP with thousands of dollars per procedure.

But according to the allegations imposed on Bindal, neither he nor any of his staff members performed these surgeries.

Patients were allegedly provided electro-acupuncture devices, which involved inserting monofilament wires a few millimetres into the ear and securing them with adhesive tape.

These procedures used to take place at the clinic of Bindal and not in a hospital or surgery room.

In some cases, these procedures were conducted by device sales representatives or physician's assistants who used to take care of the placement of devices. Patients alleged that the devices fell off over days because of weak adhesive.

“A neurosurgeon, like Bindal, should know when he is and is not performing surgery,” Hamdani said in the press release.

Texas US Presidential Election 2024: Voting, Result info, Candidates and all you need to know

Max Verstappen will seek to reboot his title defence and end an eight-race winless streak this weekend when he locks horns with title rival Lando Norris at the United States Grand Prix. Four weeks on from finishing second behind him in Singapore, Red Bull's three-time world champion and series leader hopes recent upgrades to his car will be enough for him to reel in the McLaren driver and repeat his 2023 triumph at the Circuit of the Americas.

"The car felt better in Singapore," said Verstappen. "It was already a good step for us in Baku and I think we are going in the right direction now, but it takes time. You can't change something like this in one or two weeks."

The Dutchman admitted that Red Bull struggled to match the speed of their main competitors, McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull, during much of the mid-part of the 24-race season, but with six races remaining, three including additional sprints, he hopes his 52-point lead will be enough for him to hang on.

Verstappen has not won since the Spanish Grand Prix and Norris, despite some inconsistency, has beaten him in the last five races, igniting a late bid for the drivers' title to add to McLaren's takeover of the constructors' championship.

An extra eight points are on offer this weekend thanks to Saturday's sprint as the F1 circus begins a triple-header with races in Austin, Mexico and Brazil on successive weekends before the final events in Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi.

In all, a total of 180 points are still available to be won and the various permutations all end up suggesting that Norris needs to stay on top and hope Verstappen has a few low or non-scoring races.

"It's going to be incredibly busy, but also exciting, in the next two months," said Norris. "I'm ready to get back in the car, so let's show Texas what we can do."

- 'More competitive' -

Verstappen has won all three sprints this season so far and will hope he can continue that vein of form to make the difference as the season moves to a rousing finale. His Austrian sprint win was his last success and he said he hopes further updates for Austin will "suit this circuit and see if we are more competitive when we head out on track."

Both leading teams will turn to their second drivers Sergio Perez of Red Bull and Oscar Piastri for McLaren for critical support as their battle for the titles. McLaren lead Red Bull by 41 points in the teams' title race with Perez in acute need of a change of form and fortunes before his home event in Mexico.

Mercedes' seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton, who is the most successful driver at the US Grand Prix with six wins, could also be a factor at one of his favourite circuits.

You can't change something like this in one or two weeks." The Dutchman admitted that Red Bull struggled to match the speed of their main competitors, McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull, during much of the mid-part of the 24-race season, but with six races remaining, three including additional sprints, he hopes his 52-point lead will be enough for him to hang on. "I'm ready to get back in the car, so let's show Texas what we can do." Also read: Thomas Tuchel targets 2026 FIFA World Cup glory as he takes over as England manager - 'More competitive' - Verstappen has won all three sprints this season so far and will hope he can continue that vein of form to make the difference as the season moves to a rousing finale. His Austrian sprint win was his last success and he said he hopes further updates for Austin will "suit this circuit and see if we are more competitive when we head out on track." Both leading teams will turn to their second drivers Sergio Perez of Red Bull and Oscar Piastri for McLaren for critical support as their battle for the titles. Daniel Ricciardo will be replaced by New Zealand's Liam Lawson in the RB team, a move that gives him a chance to make a claim to replace Perez next year, while at Williams Alex Albon will make his 100th race start. White was put to death after the US Supreme Court declined requests to intervene. He is the sixth inmate to be executed in the US in the last 11 days.

White was the prime suspect in two additional murders besides those of the twins and their mom, for which he had not been charged. White was born in Houston and was known for his love for football.

He went to the twin’s house to smoke crack with her mother Bonita, as per the testimony. At one point, he fatally stabbed Bonita and when the twins came out of their rooms startled, he attacked them too. White was later connected to the deaths of a grocery store owner and another woman, according to authorities.

White, while waiting to be executed, offered an apology to witnesses. "I would like to apologize for all the wrong I have done, and for the pain I've caused," he said from the death chamber.

The mystery of the twins and their mother’s deaths remained unsolved for more than six years. Later, White confessed to the murders after being arrested in connection with the July 1995 death of grocery store owner Hai Vam Pham. He also confessed to killing another woman named Greta Williams, according to police.

After White’s lawyer’s unsuccessful attempts at appealing to the US Supreme Court to intervene and stop the execution, they claimed that Texas’ top criminal appeals court refused "to accept medical evidence and strong factual backing” that showed White is intellectually disabled."

One of White's attorneys, Patrick McCann, said that the suspect spent his time behind bars "working to be a better human being."

US State Texas Sees A Rise In Maternal Mortality Post Abortion Ban

In the aftermath of the overturning of Roe v Wade, maternal deaths in Texas have surged, especially since the state's strict abortion ban in 2021. According to a new study by the Gender Equity Policy Institute (GEPI), the state witnessed a 56 per cent rise in cases of maternal mortality between 2019 and 2022.

This stark increase is over five times the national rise over the same period — 11 per cent, as per an analysis of federal public health data.

Experts point out that "there's only one explanation for this staggering difference in maternal mortality."

"All the research points to Texas’ abortion ban as the primary driver of this alarming increase," said Nancy L. Cohen, president of the GEPI.

"Texas, I fear, is a harbinger of what's to come in other states," she warned.

In Texas, the law, known as Senate Bill 8 (SB 8), bans abortions as early as five weeks into pregnancy; the only exception is to save the life of the mother.

Following its enactment, the spike in maternal deaths was observed across all racial groups. Mortality rates for Hispanic women climbed from 14.5 to 18.9 deaths per 100,000 live births, while for white women, the numbers nearly doubled, from 20 to 39.1. Black women, already at a higher risk, saw the maternal death rate increase from 31.6 to 43.6 per 100,000 live births.

GEPI president Nancy L. Cohen described the findings as a clear warning sign of the dangers tied to limiting abortion access.

"If you deny women abortions, more women are going to be pregnant, and more women are going to be forced to carry a pregnancy to term," said Cohen.

According to an NBC News report, beyond the immediate risks associated with pregnancy and childbirth, women in Texas have increasingly struggled to access prenatal care, exacerbating fears and creating more health risks for mothers-to-be.

Doctors, like Austin-based OB-GYN Dr. Leah Tatum, have reported a rise in sterilisation requests as women face anxiety about the consequences of unintended pregnancies under SB 8.

"Fear is something I’d never seen in practice prior to Senate Bill 8," said Dr Tatum, who was not involved in the GEPI study.

Many patients, she said, "feel like they're backed into a corner".

"If they already knew that they didn't want to pursue pregnancy, now they're terrified."

Others who want kids fear that they won't have the medical option to end a pregnancy even in cases where severe fetal abnormalities are discovered, said Tatum.

In one tragic case, a woman named Kaitlyn Kash was forced to travel to Kansas for an abortion after her foetus was diagnosed with a fatal condition. Due to the Texas ban, she was unable to terminate her pregnancy locally and had to endure the ordeal of being treated like a "criminal" during an already painful time.

"I was being treated like a criminal…I didn't get the dignity that I deserved to say goodbye to my child," said Kash.

"These patients are asking for help. The state of Texas has failed women," stated Dr Tatum.

Officials in Texas on Monday designated a Venezuelan gang called the Tren de Aragua as a "foreign terrorist group" and endorsed Donald Trump's claim that many migrants crossing into the United States were released from prisons in Latin America.

The Tren de Aragua is an international criminal organisation that operates in several Latin American countries and engages in extortion, homicide, drug trafficking and smuggling of people, authorities say.

Because of a political and economic crisis in Venezuela, many people from that country are allowed to enter the United States and apply for asylum.

But Texas's top border official, Mike Banks, argued that Venezuela "has released prisoners with one condition: you leave Venezuela and don't come back."

He said the administration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris is encouraging such people to come to the United States with what Banks called an open border policy.

Immigration advocates meanwhile say the Biden administration has harshly cracked down on the border with undue restrictions on people wishing to cross and seek asylum.

Appearing at the same press conference as Banks, Governor Greg Abbot formally declared Tren de Aragua a "foreign terrorist organisation."

This allows the authorities to go after the gang under a beefed up anti-terrorism law and also allows for the creation of a task force assigned specifically to fight the group.

The move came a week after the presidential debate in which Trump accused Harris baselessly of allowing millions of undocumented immigrants to cross to the United States from Mexico after being released from prisons or mental health care facilities.

Texas declares Venezuela-based Tren de Aragua gang a 'terrorist' group

Four Indians were burned to death in USA’s Texas last week in a fatal crash involving five vehicles. The group had connected through a carpooling app and was travelling to Bentonville in Arkansas. The Collin County Sheriff’s Office revealed that the crash took place near White Street at around 3:30 pm local time on August 31.

Media reports say a speeding truck rear-ended the SUV the four Indians were travelling in. After the crash, the vehicle erupted into flames and their bodies were charred. Authorities were examining DNA fingerprinting and teeth and bone remains to identify the bodies of the victims.

"DNA fingerprinting will be done to identify the bodies, and the samples will be matched with the parents," local authorities said.

Who are the four victims?

A NDTV report identified the victims as Aryan Raghunath Orampati, Farooq Shaik, Lokesh Palacharla and Darshini Vasudevan.

Vasudevan’s father previously had taken to X and urged External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to help him locate her daughter. “@DrSJaishankar Dear Sir, My daughter Dharshini Vasudevan holding Indian passport No-T6215559 have been in USA for the last 3 years, 2 years of MS studies and later 1 year of Employment and stays 3150 Avenue of the stars Apt 1110-Frisco,Texas-75034,” he wrote on X.

A giant statue of Lord Hanuman has been unveiled in Texas, US, after the 'pran pratishtha' or consecration ceremony was held from August 15 to 18. It has been named ‘the statue of union’ by the local Hindu community. The 90-foot bronze statue is now the third tallest statue in the US, after the Statue of Liberty, and the Pegasus and Dragon statue. It’s also the tallest Hanuman statue outside India, located at the Sri Ashtalakshmi Temple in Sugar Land, roughly 35 km from Houston.

According to the official website of the temple, the statue "is about creating a spiritual epicentre where hearts find solace, minds find peace, and souls find a path to transcendence."

A Texas woman, Brittany Lacayo, has made headlines by setting a new Guinness World Record for the widest tongue (female). Brittany has a tongue that measures an incredible 7.90 cm (3.11 in) at its widest point. This achievement ends a record that had remained unchallenged for 10 years.

Decade-old record surpassed

Before Brittany’s remarkable feat, the title of the world’s widest tongue belonged to Emily Schlenker, whose tongue measured 7.33 cm (2.89 in). For a decade, no one had come close to breaking this record—until now. Brittany's accomplishment surpasses Emily's, earning her a place in the Guinness World Records.

Brittany had always been aware that her tongue was larger than average. It was often the subject of playful teasing among her family and friends. However, it wasn’t until her best friend showed her a video of Emily Schlenker, the previous record holder, that Brittany began to think her tongue might be the widest in the world. Inspired by this, she decided to measure her tongue and was surprised to find that she had set a new world record.

Other unique tongue records

Brittany’s record isn’t the only unusual tongue-related achievement recognised by Guinness. The record for the widest tongue (male) belongs to Brian Thompson, whose tongue measures 8.88 cm (3.49 in).

The night sky from California to Texas was lit up a little extraordinarily last week when a mysterious and slow-moving fireball traversed through it, leaving people puzzled about its identity.

In the camera footage, which has been obtained by NBC 7, the lit ball of fire was spotted slowly moving across the sky and leaving behind a trail through its bring trail outside of San Diego over the home of Rebecca Woods who lives in San Marco

“Our camera is facing south and the object flew from west to east,” said Woods, while speaking to NBC 7.

American tech giant Meta on Tuesday (Jul 30) agreed to pay $1.4 billion to settle a lawsuit filed by the state of Texas over the illegal collection of biometric data of millions of Texans using facial-recognition technology.

The areas around Houston, Texas in the United States are being lashed by heavy rains, but the residents are worried about the downpours leading to the emergence of poisonous, foot-long worms which are a nightmare because they regenerate when cut in half.

The hammerhead flatworm is known to secrete toxins which can lead to skin irritation in humans if they touch it.

The worm thrives in hot tropical climates and can become poisonous for pets if they ingest it. They are known to carry parasites and are generally found on roads, sidewalks and lawns after rains flush them from their underground burrows.

Here's how residents should deal with poisonous flatworm

However, experts have warned the residents not to cut them into pieces, while trying to kill them.

Speaking to KHOU, Texas Invasive Species Institute's Ashley Morgan-Olvera said, “It will regenerate. So if you chop it into two pieces, you get two worms."

The people have been asked to instead put on a pair of gloves and collect the worms in a plastic bag along with salt and vinegar or citrus oil and let them freeze overnight.

Even after the worm is dead, people have been advised not to touch it. In case, one comes in contact with the worm, they are advised to immediately rinse the affected area with water and soap, and then use a douse of hand sanitiser.

All about the hammerhead worm

The hammerhead worm is also called arrowhead or shovelhead. It has been named so because of its strange head shape which appears similar to hammerhead shark. These worms can grow nearly 15 inches long and have at times been confused with snakes.

These worms prey on earthworms which are important for crops, gardens and natural environments.

Speaking to KHOU, Mississippi State University's entomology expert Dr. Blake Layton Jr. said that the worms paralyse the earthworms by covering them with their toxic slime before they stretch out their “mouth” over part of the body of the earthworm and digest it.

The disabling toxin is similar to the poison which leads to skin irritation in humans and also makes animals sick. These worms are also able to reproduce asexually.

“A portion of the rear of the worm breaks off and grows a new head, producing a new flatworm genetically identical to its parent — a literal ‘chip off the old block,’” said Dr. Layton.
