Taiwan, claimed by China as its own territory, has set up a task force to draw lessons from the surprise attack by Hamas on Israel.

Talking to media on Thursday, Defence Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng said that intelligence is key to preventing a war.

Hamas' surprise attack on Israel and the resulting conflict has focused attention on the possibility of a Chinese attack on Taiwan.

When asked by reporters about the lessons Taiwan has learnt from Israel-Hamas conflict, the Taiwanese defence minister said, "the initial (lesson) is that intelligence work is very important. With intelligence, many countermeasures can be made. A war can even be avoided."

"It is everyone's shared expectations to avoid a war," said Chiu, as reported by Reuters.

Even as the island works to counter China's military threats, the Taiwan minister said that even as Taiwan's military works to boost its combat readiness, it will not initiate a conflict. He stated that the ongoing conflict demonstrated the horror of war.

Constant threat

During a forum in Taipei on Wednesday, former Australian prime minister Scott Morrison voiced his support for Taiwan's strengthening of its defences.

He said that in light of China's threats against the island nation, it is essential for Taiwan to strengthen its resilience. He also said that Taiwan needs to show "urgency" and do more.

"But they spend considerably more proportionally on its defence than here in Taiwan," he added.

Taiwan's government has proposed designating around 2.5 per cent of the country's overall GDP to defence next year. In comparison, as per Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, Israel's defence budget this year amounted to 4.5 per cent of its GDP.

The Chinese military released an animated short film on National Day showing pieces of a scroll painting torn in two more than 300 years ago being reunited, in a show of the mainland's determination to bring self-ruled Taiwan into the fold.

The pieces of the "The Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains", one of China's best-known ancient paintings, are kept separately in museums in China and Taiwan, the democratically governed island that Beijing claims as one its provinces, and which it reserves the right to take over by force.

On National Day on Sunday, the People's Liberation Army's Eastern Theatre Command, known for belligerent videos of exercises around Taiwan, released an animated short film called "Dreams Come True on Fuchun River", appealing to the shared cultural roots of people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

The two pieces were reunited in 2011 when China lent its fragment to the Taiwanese museum for two months during a period of warmer relations as Taiwan pursued a policy of economic rapprochement with China.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping reiterated calls for "the complete reunification of the motherland" during a state banquet that marked China's 74th National Day on Thursday (Sep 28) as he described it as a "historical necessity that cannot be stopped by any force".

Xi urged the nation to "work together in unity" in a speech more usually delivered by the premier at the dinner reception before the 74th anniversary of the founding of modern China.

Xi also addressed the country's economic goals as China's economy is slowing down. Xi Jinping says 'complete reunification' of China 'cannot be stopped by any force'

China has stated that its recent series of military drills near Taiwan is aimed at countering what it views as the "arrogance" of separatist forces advocating for Taiwan's independence.

These exercises have raised concerns about potential conflicts and have been met with strong opposition from Taiwan, reported Reuters.

In response to China's military activities, Taiwan has reported a surge in fighter jets, drones, bombers, warships, and even the presence of the Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong operating near its territory.

This escalation in military activities poses a risk of unintended clashes, prompting warnings from Taiwan's defence minister.

China's perspective

China's Taiwan Affairs Office spokeswoman, Zhu Fenglian, addressed these drills during a Beijing news briefing. She emphasised that the drills are meant to counter the efforts of Taiwan independence separatist forces and their actions promoting independence.

Zhu asserted that the People's Liberation Army's actions to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity are ongoing and called for people in Taiwan to oppose independence and collaborate with China to maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait.

Front-runner for Taiwan's presidency

William Lai, the leading candidate for Taiwan's presidency, accused China of attempting to annex the island. Lai, who previously voiced support for independence, clarified that he does not seek to alter the status quo and has extended an offer for talks with Beijing. His candidacy has drawn particular ire from China due to his past pro-independence remarks.

Notably, China's armed forces have refrained from explicitly commenting on these drills. Simultaneously, there are reports that Chinese Defence Minister Li Shangfu has gone missing from the public eye amid allegations of corruption. This situation further adds intrigue to China's military activities in the region.

Taiwan's democratically elected government maintains that only the people of Taiwan can determine their future, and it has consistently offered talks with China, which Beijing has consistently rejected. The situation has worsened as Taiwan reported 16 Chinese aircraft entering its air defence identification zone, with 12 crossing the median line of the Taiwan Strait. This line previously served as an unofficial boundary until China started regularly crossing it in August of the previous year.

Taiwan's defence ministry recently revealed its monitoring of China's drills in the southern Fujian province, a rare disclosure of surveillance and intelligence capabilities. This disclosure is intended to showcase Taiwan's preparedness and vigilance in the face of increasing tensions.

China's military has not commented on the Fujian exercises or Taiwan's revelations about monitoring these activities. This silence from Beijing leaves observers and the international community uncertain about China's broader intentions regarding Taiwan.

China has stated that its recent series of military drills near Taiwan is aimed at countering what it views as the "arrogance" of separatist forces advocating for Taiwan's independence.

China's perspective China's Taiwan Affairs Office spokeswoman, Zhu Fenglian, addressed these drills during a Beijing news briefing. Also read | No 'bad men' in Xi's rule? Decoding the mystery of China's disappearing ministers Front-runner for Taiwan's presidency William Lai, the leading candidate for Taiwan's presidency, accused China of attempting to annex the island. Taiwan is set to launch the first of eight domestically produced submarines as it bolsters its defences against China. The blaze, resultant smoke and related damage at the Apple iPhone assembly facility run by Taiwanese firm Pegatron is likely to halt assembly operations at the plant for at least a week, sources told WION.

Situated within the Mahindra World City in Chengalpattu district (nearly 60 km from the capital city of Chennai) of Tamil Nadu, the Pegatron facility is capable of assembling almost 20,000 iPhones per day.

The models being assembled here are Apple iPhone 14 Plus and 15 Plus. Considering the average cost of these models to be $1000, the impact of not operating for a day would mean that $20 million worth of phones are not being produced.

The blaze that began on Sunday night is learnt to have been put out in a few hours after the incident was reported. Videos of the incident showed multiple fire tenders and an ambulance at the Pegatron facility.

Personnel working at Pegatron told WION that there are more than 9,000 of them involved in iPhone assembly at the factory and that production activity had not been carried out on Monday. It is understood that the factory works round-the-clock from Monday to Saturday with a schedule off on Sundays. The factory's 24-hour workday is split into three shifts- A (6 am-2 pm), B (2 pm-10 pm) and C (10 pm-6 am).

Nearly 1,000 personnel are learnt to have reported for work at the facility on Tuesday morning. However, the assembly operations were not carried out as the damage assessment and cleaning are underway at the facility.

"The blaze began at one assembly hall and from there the smoke spread to the other two assembly halls. Some of the high-tech, imported machinery have also sustained damaged," WION has learnt.

Owing to the above factors, it is said that the resumption of assembly operations could take a week or longer.

When requested for an official response, Pegatron replied to WION: "At the company's factory in Chennai, India, on the evening of the 24th local time, there was a spark incident, which is currently under control. There are no injuries, no casualties nor damage to other assets. The cause of accident is currently under investigations by relevant authority, and the incident does not have significant financial or operational impact to Pegatron Corporation."

Pegatron evades questions

However, Pegatron Corporation did not respond to WION's specific questions on the operational status of internal fire suppression systems, the number of personnel who were present at the time of the incident, the extent of damage to property, how the blaze and its aftermath affects assembly and whether Apple has been made aware of the fire accident. WION also e-mailed Apple, seeking an official statement. So far, there has been no revert from the American tech giant.

Notably, this is the second major mishap at a Tamil Nadu facility linked to the Cupertino-based tech giant and the world's largest tech firm. In December 2021, more than 150 women workers at the Foxconn facility in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, Tamil Nadu had fallen ill after consuming the meals provided at the staff dormitory.

Back then, the women had protested and blocked a crucial national highway. The issue was later taken up by the Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn, Apple and the Tamil Nadu Government. WION had visited and reported from the dorm rooms where the women workers had stayed.

Last year, in light of the issues connected with the Foxconn facility, Apple placed its iPhone contract manufacturer Foxconn’s Chennai unit on probation, over cleanliness and hygiene issues at their staff dormitory and dining areas. Later, after an audit and corrective measures by Foxconn and the intervention of the Tamil Nadu Government, the factory resumed its production activities in January 2022.

In the Steve Jobs Biography written by American journalist and author Walter Isaacson, it is said that the mercurial Apple founder used to make surprise visits to Apple assembly facilities and carry out inspections. During such inspection visits, he would put on a brand-new, white-coloured hand glove and wipe the factory work floor using the same. Even if the smallest amounts of dirt or dust were found on the glove, Jobs would go ballistic at those running at the factory. Such was the man's obsession with perfection and cleanliness, the book says.

Recurring mishaps at Apple's iPhone assembly facilities in India raise questions about the safety standards followed by the American tech giant and its Taiwanese partners here. It is also important to remember that the Indian Government takes pride in bringing Apple assembly lines to India and rolling out high-end tech products worth billions. Such incidents also bring to the fore the responsibility of relevant government agencies in conducting regular inspections, audits and holding the factory officials accountable for mishaps or lapses in compliance.

Amid geopolitical tensions with China, American tech giants including Apple have been looking to move more of their assembly facilities to India and southern Indian states have been taking the lead in luring the investors, predominantly Taiwanese contract manufacturers. Apple also pins great hope on the young and aspirational Indian customer who wants to flaunt tech luxury. India: iPhone assembly halted at Apple's Pegatron plant in Chennai after fire

East Asian tensions are rising, and China's provocative flexing of its military might near Taiwan has kind of reached a breaking point. Taiwan now claims that Beijing is stepping up its military actions and that things could get out of control.

China ramps up military drills around Taiwan

Taiwan is working towards developing a suicide drone which can carry out autonomous and manual attacks as the country aims to bolster its asymmetric warfare capabilities amid the increasing pressure from the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), as per a report published in the South China Morning Post.

The aerial weapon which is being developed will turn out to be a more powerful variant of the Loitering Unmanned Aircraft Type 1.

Loitering Unmanned Aircraft Type 1 was inspired by the US-made Switchblade 300, a drone which proved effective in neutralising ground targets and destroying Russian tanks in the war in Ukraine.

The aerial weapon which has been tentatively named the “Loitering Missile II”, will be the Type 2 suicide drone which will be equipped with built-in warheads and will be able to linger near a target till the moment it strikes - by flying into the target.

Destructive aerial weapons can be launched from different platforms

Type 2, which is a miniature of Type 1's much larger version, can be launched from various platforms with the aim of amplifying its destructive power, as per the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology, the top weapons builder of the country.

“Type 2 is a high mobility munition that can be easily repositioned because its foldable wings allow for efficient transport,” stated Chi Li-pin, director of the Institute’s aeronautical systems research division, while speaking to South China Morning Post.

The weapon has the ability to abort or change its attack missions mid-flight as required, Chi emphasised.

Since the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has been configured for multi-tube launches from various platforms like trucks, planes, unmanned aerial vehicles and ships, the officials can dispatch the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) from land, air and sea, said Chi in his presentation before the defence technology show held last week in Taipei.

“Also, multiple layers of tubes can be mounted at the launching platforms, allowing a number of the munitions to be ejected at the same time,” said Chi, adding that the officials can use the drones day or night.

“The munition is suitable for saturation attacks and precise, beyond-visual-range strikes on fixed and mobile targets using its multi-module seeker,” Chi stated, speaking about the Type 2’s artificial intelligence-guided capability, smart-recognition and anti-radiation features, and electro-optic and infrared image tracking systems.

The search efforts continue for five individuals who remained unaccounted for and are missing. This includes four factory workers and one firefighter. The impact of the incident was extensive, with over 100 people requiring medical attention and being rushed to hospitals for treatment of injuries sustained during the fire and explosions.

Tragedy strikes Taiwan golf ball factory, fire leaves 6 dead and 100 injured

The Taiwanese defence ministry, on Friday (September 22) called recent Chinese military movements around the island “abnormal” while also reporting an increase in such activity over the past week or so. The ministry also particularly flagged amphibious exercises as well as drills Taipei has observed in the province facing the island.

The Taiwanese defence ministry, early Friday, said that they detected 32 Chinese aircraft within the previous 24 hours out of which 17 planes crossed the median line – an unofficial barrier between the two sides – according to a map it published. Two of the aircraft also ventured around Taiwan’s southern tip, as per the reports.

Beijing has recently ramped up military drills around Taipei as it continues to claim self-ruled Taiwan as its territory and has maintained it will seize it one day, by force, if necessary.

‘Abnormal’ military activities

In a press conference, Taiwan’s defence minister Chiu Kuo-cheng, said “Our enemy’s recent movements are really quite abnormal.”

This comes as the island’s defence officials have reported increased military activity during the past week, as dozens of fighters, drones, bombers and other aircraft, as well as warships, have operated nearby.

“Our initial analysis is that they are doing joint drills in September, including land, sea, air and amphibious,” Chiu told reporters in Taipei. Beijing is yet to respond to these comments.

The statement also came a day after an unusual statement by the defence ministry which said that it was monitoring Chinese activities – which included the use of long-range artillery, rocket forces and ground troops – near Dacheng Bay located in the southern Chinese province of Fujian which faces Taiwan.

A report by Reuters citing Taiwan security sources said that Beijing performs its landing drills in that area. However, China has not officially announced any new drills in that area while Chiu said releasing the information about Dacheng Bay was in line with the Taiwanese ministry’s principle of keeping the public informed.

“The threat posed by PLA’s (People’s Liberation Army) activities have led to an escalation of tension and damaged the regional security,” said the ministry spokesman Sun Li-fang on Thursday (Sep 21), adding that “closer the PLA’s aircraft are to Taiwan, the stronger our countermeasures will be.”

Taiwan’s defence ministry has also previously said that China typically performs large-scale exercises from July to September.

‘Repeated provocations’

On Monday (Sep 18), the Taiwanese defence ministry raised alarm after they tracked a record 103 PLA aircraft operating near the island in the 24 hours starting Sunday morning out of which 40 crossed the de facto median line.

While Taiwan has frequently assured that it would remain calm and not escalate the situation it has also maintained that it won’t allow “repeated provocations” from China.

A security source told Reuters that Beijing was most likely seeking to wear out Taiwan’s much smaller military with constant missions so close to Taiwan, especially with longer flights along the median line than before.

“China is seeking to normalise these activities and push Taiwan into a corner,” said the anonymous source, adding this risked miscalculation if Chinese ships or aircraft got too close and Taiwan opened fire.

Taiwan flags ‘abnormal’ Chinese movements, rise in military activity around island

Taiwan on Monday (Sept 18) said that it detected 103 Chinese warplanes around the island in 24 hours, sounding alarm bells over the heightened presence of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

"103 PLA aircraft and 9 PLAN vessels around Taiwan were detected" between Sunday and Monday morning, the defence ministry said in a statement, referring to China's air force and navy.

The ministry said that the number of Chinese military aircraft carrying out missions over the sea in the last 24 hours was a "recent high".

The ministry said that 40 of the planes detected Sunday and early Monday crossed the symbolic median line between Taiwan and mainland China.

Taipei urged Beijing to stop “destructive, unilateral action”, warning such harassment could lead to a sharp increase in tensions.

Increased military drills

It comes at a time when China has been undertaking military drills near the self-ruled island in a bid to increase pressure as it asserts claim over Taiwan, which it considers a part of its territory.

Between Wednesday (Sept 13) and Thursday ((Sept 14) morning, Taiwan’s defence ministry detected 68 PLA aircraft and 10 PLAN vessels in a day.

The previous day on Tuesday, Taiwan said it detected 35 warplanes around the island.

It is believed that the Chinese drills coincided with a joint maritime exercise conducted by the US, South Korea and Canada that happened on the Yellow Sea on Thursday.

The military build-up is part of China’s attempts to lay claim over Taiwan and its integration into the mainland.

Plan for peaceful unification

On Tuesday (September 12), the Chinese policymakers unveiled a new plan to move forward with the country's bid for "peaceful unification" with Taiwan.

Under the measures, the Chinese policymakers plan to turn Fujian province into a model zone for "integration" with the island nation.

They also call for Xiamen coastal city to speed up integration with Kinmen and Matsu, two groups of islands that lie just a few miles off the coast of mainland China but are governed by Taiwan.

Taiwan on Thursday (Sept 14) said that it has detected at least 84 Chinese warplanes and 33 warships in three days near its territory, as the People Liberation of Army (PLA) conducts one of its biggest joint sea and air drills in months in the Western Pacific.

Between Wednesday and Thursday morning, 68 PLA aircraft and 10 PLAN vessels around Taiwan were detected, the Taipei defence ministry said in a statement.

The previous day on Tuesday, Taiwan said it detected 35 warplanes around the island.

Taiwan’s defence ministry said that some of the planes and warships detected on Wednesday were heading to an unspecified location at the Western Pacific to "conduct joint sea and air training with the Shandong aircraft carrier."

Movements spotted amidst Chinese military drills

Shandong is the first carrier built by the mainland and the PLA’s second battle group. The defence ministry said that it was spotted 60 nautical miles off Taiwan’s southernmost tip on Monday when it headed for combat training.

“Twenty-eight of them crossed the median line and entered our southwest air defence identification zone (ADIZ),” the ministry said, referring to the de facto line that separates the island from the mainland in the Taiwan Strait.

“Some of the warplanes headed towards the western Pacific through Bashi Channel to join the Shandong for a joint sea and air training.”

China has so far not officially commented on any drills being conducted in the Western Pacific.

But its Eastern Theatre Command, which organises drills around Taiwan, on Wednesday said that an "aviation unit" had carried out training "recently", in a range of "thousands of kilometres."

It, however, did not mention Taiwan.

China has come up with a new path to move forward its bid of "peaceful unification" with Taiwan. Beijing has unveiled a plan to turn Fujian province into a model zone for "integration" with the island nation.
