In a statement late Tuesday (Jan 30), the Chinese civil aviation administration said, starting Thursday (Feb 1) it will cancel the “offset measure” for the southbound operation of the M503 flight route. The route in question is just west of the strait’s median line.

China has also said that it is opening routes from west to east – towards Taiwan – on two flight paths from the Chinese cities of Xiamen and Fuzhou which are close to the Taiwanese-controlled island groups of Kinmen and Matsu, and have regular flights to Taiwan.

The median line has served as an unofficial border between Chinese-claimed self-governed Taiwan and mainland China.&nbsp;

However, Beijing has repeatedly denied the existence of the barrier and regularly sends PLA vessels and aircraft, in a bid to pressure Taipei to accept its sovereignty claims, which Taiwan has long rejected.&nbsp;

<h2>Taiwan responds to ‘unilateral’ change</h2>

Taiwan’s civil aviation administration and China-policy making Mainland Affairs Council have labelled the moves as “unilateral” and said they strongly protest it.&nbsp;

The council said China is ignoring flight safety, disrespecting Taiwan and even accused Beijing of trying to make these changes for political or military considerations under the guise of civil aviation to possibly change the status quo in the strait.

It added, “If the mainland side clings obstinately to its course, it must bear any serious consequences affecting cross-strait relations.”&nbsp;

Taiwan’s defence ministry said China’s “rude and unreasonable” actions can easily lead to an increase in tensions.&nbsp;

“Chinese aircraft could now end up flying across the line when they have to adjust flight paths due to weather conditions,” said Colonel Sun Li-fang, Taiwan’s defence ministry spokesperson.

Chieh Chung, a military researcher at Taiwan’s National Policy Foundation told Reuters, that as per China’s new plan, the new route would be around seven kilometres from the median line. Therefore, it would reduce the warning and reaction time for Taiwan’s air defences.&nbsp;

He added, “It is trying to completely eliminate and deny the existence of the median line.” The Air Defence Identification Zone&nbsp;(ADIZ) is a broad area that the Taiwanese forces patrol to give its forces more time to respond to threats.&nbsp;

<h2>China downplays Taiwan’s concerns</h2>

On Wednesday (Jan 31), Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office called the changes “routine” to help alleviate pressure on air space and “ensure aviation safety”.&nbsp;

He also said that China did not need to discuss this first with Taiwan, adding that the “so-called median line does not exist.”&nbsp;

In 2018, Taiwan had complained about the M503 route which is used by Chinese airlines and foreign airlines going to and from cities like Shanghai to Southeast Asia.

According to the document, the Pacific island nation now recognises that there is “only one China in the world” governed by the People’s Republic of China and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China.&nbsp;

However, Taiwan has long rejected Beijing’s claims on the self-governed island and accused China of trying to pressure Taiwan with Nauru’s switch, immediately after its recent presidential election where the pro-independence party candidate Lai Ching-te won. China considers him a “separatist”.&nbsp;

During the ceremony in Beijing, China’s top diplomat said the resumption of ties “once again demonstrates to the world that adherence to the one-China principle is an irresistible historical trend.”&nbsp;

Additionally, in an apparent response to Taiwan’s accusations, Wang also said Nauru’s decision to sever ties with Taiwan was “an independent political decision made by the Nauruan government.”&nbsp;

He added, “We are willing to share with Nauru the development opportunities brought by Chinese-style modernisation.”

Meanwhile, Aingimea said Nauru recognised that Taiwan is part of China. “We look forward to the practical cooperation that’s going to happen between Nauru and China,” said the Nauruan foreign minister.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Deeply grieved’</h2>

Taiwan’s foreign ministry, in a statement, said it was “deeply grieved”. It added, “The Nauru government is ignorant to the lure of financial aid and is a retainer to China’s manipulation, ignoring the development assistance and friendship provided by our country for many years.”&nbsp;

Nauru’s government, on January 15, two days after the new Taiwanese president was elected released a statement saying that it is severing ties with Taiwan. This comes as China has been gradually poaching the few remaining diplomatic allies of the self-governed island.&nbsp;

As a part of China’s claims on Taiwan, Beijing has also maintained that since Taiwan is its territory it has no right to state-to-state ties, which the self-governed island has strongly disputed.&nbsp;

Since 2016, the initial election of DPP President Tsai Ing-wen, 10 countries have switched ties from Taipei to Beijing. Taiwan, excluding Nauru, now has 12 diplomatic allies.&nbsp;

<h2>US lawmakers visit Taiwan</h2>

While China and Nauru were restoring ties, two US lawmakers arrived in Taiwan on Wednesday (Jan 24), marking the first trip by American officials since Lai won the election.&nbsp;

Two co-chairs of the US Congressional Taiwan Caucus, Representatives Ami Bera, a Democrat from California, and Mario Díaz-Balart, a Republican from Florida, landed in Taiwan and plan to “engage with senior officials and business leaders,” Bera’s office said in a statement.&nbsp;

The potential for China to use balloons for spying became a global issue last February when the United States shot down what it said was a Chinese surveillance balloon. China said the balloon was a civilian craft that accidentally drifted astray.

In the latest incident, revealed by the ministry on Monday in its daily report on Chinese military activities over the past 24 hours, it said six balloons had flown over the strait's sensitive median line on Sunday.

However, only one crossed Taiwan island, at its southern tip, according to a map the ministry provided.

The other five balloons flew to the north of Taiwan but did not fly over land, the ministry said.

All the balloons headed east before vanishing, it added.

Seeking presidential nomination, Donald Trump has once again refused to spell out explicitly if he would help Taiwan in the event China decides to invade the island nation. The former US president in an interview with Fox News was quizzed if, under a hypothetical second Trump&nbsp;presidency, Washington would stand up for Taiwan and protect it when the inadvertent incursion from China comes.&nbsp;

Instead of giving a firm answer, Trump showed discontent with Taiwan for taking the lucrative semiconductor business away from the US.&nbsp;

"Taiwan did take all of our chip business. We used to make all of our own chips, now they're made in Taiwan, 90 per cent of [them]...Remember this, Taiwan took, smart, brilliant, they took our business away," said Trump.&nbsp;

Netizens interpreted Trump's statement as an indication that he would not come to Taiwan's aid if the situation became worrisome.&nbsp;

"If Trump is elected, Taiwan is gone and so is a significant chunk of our semiconductor capacity. Not only is Trump unfit for the office, he's just plain wrong on so many things like this," said one user.&nbsp;

Another added: "Trump clearly has made bed with China on the Taiwan issue. Surprising that out of all candidates, he refused to have Taiwan in his corner."

<h2>Trump and Biden's&nbsp;stance on Taiwan</h2>

Notably, this is not the first instance when Trump has shown ambiguity on the Taiwan issue. In September last year, during an interview with NBC, Trump was asked if he would send the military to help defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attack.

"I won't say, I won't say, because if I said, I'm giving away...you know, only stupid people are going to give that (away)," said Trump whilst taking a jab at Ron DeSantis whom the former president criticised revealing his strategy on key geopolitical issues.

China considers Taiwan a part of its territory but the island nation and its people have never accepted Beijing's control. The US follows the One-China principle as well, meaning, it does not have any diplomatic relations with Taipei.
