Taiwan reported that two Chinese weather balloons were spotted flying across the Taiwan Strait. The Ministry added that balloons stayed north of Taiwan. This is the second time that such an incident has been reported this month.

A senior leader of the Kuomintang (KMT), Taiwan's main opposition party, is in China for meetings with the Taiwanese community, his party said on Thursday, drawing criticism from the ruling party for his going one month before elections. The trip of KMT Vice Chairman Andrew Hsia, a former Taiwanese diplomat and one-time head of Taiwan's China-policy making Mainland Affairs Council, comes as his party seeks to narrow the ruling party's lead ahead of the Jan. 13 presidential and parliamentary elections.

US cyber experts and government officials have warned that Chinese hackers have deeply infiltrated the country’s critical infrastructure, including water, power, communication and transport entities.

As per a report published in the Washington Post, these hackers are directly linked with China’s People's Liberation Army (PLA).

The aim of this expansive Chinese intrusion is clear: To limit the USA’s ability to play a larger role in Asian conflicts, especially in a potential Chinese attack on Taiwan and to cause chaos within the US and stir instability in the country.

<h2>Hawaii: A special target</h2>

The Post reported that a Hawaiian water utility was amongst the various entities targeted by the Chinese hackers.

Hawaii is where the US stations its troops and warships meant for patrolling the Indo-Pacific area. The island also serves as the headquarters of the US Indo-Pacific Command.

By interfering with Hawaii’s critical infrastructure, China likely wants to jeopardise the USA’s ability to intervene in a conflict involving Taiwan.

“This is stuff they pretty clearly see as relevant to a Taiwan scenario,” Joe McReynolds, a China security studies fellow at the Jamestown Foundation, was quoted as saying by The Post.

<h2>Dangerous designs</h2>

According to Chinese military officials, the PLA plans to coincide their cyber attacks on enemy targets with aerial strikes using the air force.

Hackers would target satellite networks, along with military logistics systems, of the enemy while airstrikes will reduce their military equipment to ashes.

PLA-backed hackers infiltrated USA’s water, power and communication entities: Report

China on Saturday (Dec 9) went all guns blazing over calls to include Taiwan in the United Nations-backed Conference of the Parties (COP28) Summit being held in Dubai.

A member of the Chinese delegation reasserted on the platform that Taiwan “was an inalienable part of China.”

"China has noted that during the meeting a handful of countries ignore the fact that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and make noises about the participation by the Taiwan authorities in the COP," the member said via a translator.

"This is unacceptable," the delegate said, asking for their statement to be entered into the official record.

<h2>Allies call for Taiwan’s inclusion</h2>

Earlier this week, the leaders of four of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies, namely Saint Lucia and Saint Kitts and Nevis, Tuvalu, and Eswatini, called on the UN to include Taiwan in the climate conference.

In his address, Saint Lucian Prime Minister Philip Pierre said that "the time is now for world leaders to transform to a safer place for our children."

"And in this battle Taiwan must not be left behind," he underlined.

‘Unacceptable,’ China lashes out at nations calling for Taiwan’s inclusion in COP28

In a stark manifestation of the deepening economic and financial decoupling between Taiwan and China, the world's largest Chinese bond exchange-traded fund (ETF) market is on the brink of collapse. &nbsp;

According to Bloomberg, this rupture highlights the widening gap in relations fuelled by geopolitical tensions, de-risking of supply chains, and China's economic slowdown. Despite the impending critical presidential election in January, the trend of decoupling, from markets to finance and investments, is expected to persist.

ETF Meltdown: A 94 per cent plunge in Chinese bond assets

Taiwanese ETFs tracking Chinese bonds, once valued at over $58 billion in 2019, have witnessed a staggering 94 per cent decline in total assets under management as of early this month. &nbsp;

The nosedive reflects a broader global trend where funds are fleeing China's bond market due to significant yield differentials with the US. This financial rift mirrors Taiwan's pivotal role in US-China geopolitics, making the outcome of the upcoming election crucial as voters decide between maintaining political independence or seeking closer ties with Beijing.

Changing Dynamics: From promising yields to regulatory shifts

The local market for investing in China-linked fixed-income securities in Taiwan, introduced five years ago, once thrived. Driven by promising yields for yuan-denominated bonds and the credibility of the Chinese government and policy banks as debtors, it faced a turning point with widening US-China yields. &nbsp;

Furthermore, stringent Taiwanese government regulations, requiring insurers to hold at least a BBB- rating, rendered it impossible for them to invest in China-backed ETFs. KGI Securities notes that until these restrictions ease, Taiwanese life insurance firms would need credit ratings from major global agencies to re-enter the market.

Financial Exodus: Taiwanese banks scale back in China

Taiwanese banks have been steadily reducing their financial footprint in China, with exposure to the world's second-largest economy hitting record lows. This withdrawal aligns with a global trend known as "China+1," where firms diversify and set up operations in other regions to manage supply chain risks. &nbsp;

Taiwanese firms, including Cathay United Bank and Fubon Financial Holding, are adjusting their strategies, expanding in Southeast Asia and capping positions in China, respectively.

Investment Slump: Cross-Strait tensions take a toll

Taiwanese direct investment into China has plummeted nearly 40 per cent in the first ten months of this year compared to 2022, poised for the sharpest year-on-year decline since 2019. Increased cross-strait tensions, ongoing US-China trade disputes, and the geopolitical landscape contribute to this significant drop. Analysts believe that even if a Beijing-friendly candidate were to replace President Tsai, the trend of looser ties in terms of foreign direct investment (FDI) and visitor flows is likely to persist.

China's share in Taiwan's exports shrinks

China and Hong Kong's share in Taiwan's total overseas shipments has decreased from 44 per cent in 2020 to 35 per cent in the first ten months of 2023. This shift is attributed to a decline in goods sent from Taiwan to China across various categories. &nbsp;

Rising wages, reduced local subsidies, and geopolitical strains, including Washington's export bans on Beijing, contribute to the diminishing attractiveness of China as a manufacturing hub.

Foreign investors are set to channel significant capital into Taiwan stocks in November, creating a record-setting inflow of $8.2 billion on a net basis, Bloomberg reported on Thursday.<o:p></o:p>

This surge being the largest monthly inflow since at least 2000, is attributed to growing optimism surrounding technology shares, fuelled by the belief that the Federal Reserve has concluded its interest-rate hikes.<o:p></o:p>

The Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE) Index has surged by an impressive 8.6 per cent in November, positioning itself as one of the top-performing indices in the Asia Pacific region. This rally aligns with a global trend as investors re-evaluate tech valuations amid expectations of a peak in borrowing costs.<o:p></o:p>

Bloomberg cited Caroline Yu Maurer, Head of China and Specialised Asia Strategies at HSBC Asset Management, who emphasised the close correlation between Taiwan's market and the U.S. cycle, particularly the AI-related cycle. She noted that Taiwan's leading stocks do not exhibit extreme valuations, providing an attractive proposition for investors. Maurer remarked that Taiwan “is very much geared toward the US cycle, essentially the AI-related cycle. (The leading stocks) are not really extreme on valuations, they’re not as expensive."<o:p></o:p>

As the tech-heavy market in Taiwan experiences this financial influx, its neighbour, South Korea, also attracted substantial inflows amounting to $3.1 billion. In contrast, Indian equities, while increasingly becoming a structural bet for many foreigners, saw relatively lower popularity, gathering $614 million in inflows. <o:p></o:p>

China has alarmingly increased its military activity around Taiwan, including flying at least nine aircraft across the sensitive median line of the Taiwan Strait and deploying warships in the close vicinity.

Taiwan’s defence ministry said it noticed the increased activity on Sunday morning (Nov 19).&nbsp;

The aircraft involved included Su-30 and J-10 fighters, as well as early warning and electronic warfare aircraft, the ministry said. The aircraft were accompanying Chinese warships carrying out “joint combat readiness patrols”, it added.

Taiwan scrambled its own forces to monitor the Chinese planes.

<h2>Backdrop of APEC Summit</h2>

China’s aggression in the Taiwan Strait comes just days after its President Xi Jinping met with US President Joe Biden in San Francisco on the sidelines of the APEC Summit.&nbsp;

Taiwan was one of the biggest focuses of the discussions that took place. Xi told Biden during their four-hour meeting on Wednesday that Taiwan was the biggest, most dangerous issue in US-China ties, according to a senior US official.

Although China didn’t issue any clarification after Taiwan’s allegations, its earlier statement released in September said the purpose of such military exercises was to “resolutely combat the arrogance of Taiwan independence separatist forces and their actions to seek independence.”

China has alarmingly increased its military activity around Taiwan, including flying at least nine aircraft across the sensitive median line of the Taiwan Strait and deploying warships in the close vicinity. Taiwan’s defence ministry said it noticed the increased activity on Sunday morning (Nov 19). Foxconn, the world's largest iPhone assembler,&nbsp;has experienced a 4.6 per cent decline in its October sales, raising concerns about the company's future amidst a Chinese investigation.

The investigation initiated by Beijing has cast uncertainty over Foxconn's business, causing ripples in the tech industry, Bloomberg reported.

Foxconn reported a decline in revenue for October, with sales amounting to NT$741.2 billion ($23 billion). Despite this setback, the company has maintained a "significant growth outlook" for the December quarter, which is traditionally its busiest period due to the year-end iPhone shipments. Notably, Apple released its latest iPhone 15 in September.

In a brief statement, Foxconn mentioned that "operations will ramp up sequentially", without providing further details. The ongoing investigation by Chinese authorities has added complexity to Apple's position in its largest international market and primary production base. Regulators in China are currently conducting tax audits and reviewing land use by Foxconn, as reported by state media on October 22.

The report by Bloomberg said that investor concerns have escalated regarding the prospects of Apple's iPhone sales in China, a market that constitutes approximately one-fifth of the tech giant's total sales.

The Chinese consumer economy is grappling with challenges, while U.S. businesses continue to face a hostile environment due to ongoing technology conflicts between the U.S. and China. Additionally, the surprise introduction of a smartphone by Huawei Technologies Co. featuring an advanced made-in-China 5G processor has stirred nationalist sentiment and encroached on iPhone sales.

Hon Hai, the public arm of Foxconn Technology Group, has expressed its intention to cooperate with the Chinese authorities in their investigation. However, the news of the probe has taken a toll on the company and its mainland-listed unit, Foxconn Industrial Internet Co. At one point, the combined market value of these entities plummeted by approximately $9 billion.

Separately, Taiwan has also initiated an investigation into suspected bribes associated with Foxconn founder Terry Gou's presidential campaign. This development comes as the billionaire submits signatures to run in next year's presidential election.

Taiwan is set to host the presidential election on January 13 next year. The election would help set the course for the relations between the United States and China for the years to come. Their choice is between a ruling party determined to maintain Taiwan's political independence and an opposition that sees closer ties with China as the only viable path. In the run-up to the election, China stepped up military and political pressure to assert its claim of sovereignty. Elections in Taiwan have usually been dominated by voters' views on how the island should handle relations with China, a report by the news agency Bloomberg said in April. This election is also a litmus test of how voters are nervous about the current state of affairs in Taiwan and where they might lead. The differing views on Taiwan Relations between the US and China have been strained for years over issues ranging from technology to human rights, and Taiwan is a key flashpoint. Both countries have differing views on Taiwan. The island's current status has been in dispute since the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949. Since then, China has claimed sovereignty over Taiwan, even though the island established a democracy. China sees the US as abrogating its “One China policy" in which Washington recognised the Beijing-based People’s Republic as the “sole legal government of China” and ended formal diplomatic recognition of Taiwan — without clarifying America's position on the island’s sovereignty, Bloomberg reported. Though US officials said that there is no change in the policy, President Joe Biden repeatedly said that his government would come to Taiwan’s defence if attacked. The next president of Taiwan will serve till 2027. By this year, the US estimates China wants its military to be capable of undertaking an attack on Taiwan. Ely Ratner, who is Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs in the Biden administration, said on September 19 that the US was strengthening deterrence across the Taiwan Strait. Ratner said that Washington remained committed to the One China policy, which has helped preserve peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait for more than four decades. However, he pointed out that China was pushing the envelope by waging a campaign of military, diplomatic and economic pressure against Taiwan. The top official also warned that a major conflict in the strait "would result in thousands of casualties and jeopardise more than $2 trillion in global economic activity, igniting a global economic depression." In August last year, then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei which outraged China. In response, China launched one of the biggest military drills ever seen around the island. In April this year, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen visited the US, which sparked shorter but intense military drills from China. The top contenders and their stand on China The top contenders for this year's presidential election in Taiwan are current Vice President William Lai, Hou Yu-Ih, Ko Wen-Je and Terry Gou. The contenders have called for talks with China. Vice President Lai, a leader of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), has repeatedly called for talks with China but has been rebuffed as Beijing views him as a separatist. "We don't want to be enemies, we can be friends. And we would love to see China enjoy democracy and freedom – just like us," Lai, who is leading the opinion poll, said in August. "However, until China renounces the use of force against Taiwan, we must strengthen our military capacity," he added. Hou Yu-Ih, a leader of Taiwan's main opposition party Kuomintang (KMT) also said he would restart talks with China. The KMT traditionally favours close ties with China but strongly denies being pro-Beijing. Ko Wen-Je is a leader of the Taiwan People's Party. A former Taipei mayor, Ko is catching up quickly with Lai in the frontrunner race. On Tuesday (Oct 24), Ko said that China should propose a new framework for engagement with Taiwan and explain what Beijing has to offer. Meanwhile, Terry Gou, the billionaire founder of major Apple supplier Foxconn, is running as an independent candidate. Gou no longer runs Foxconn and has accused the DPP of taking Taiwan to the brink of war with China by its hostile policies and that only he, with his extensive business and personal contacts in China and the US, can maintain peace. Foxconn made headlines last week after it was subjected to tax inspections by Chinese authorities. On Tuesday, Vice President Lai hit out at China over the Foxconn probe and said Beijing should cherish Taiwanese companies and not put pressure on them during an election. "During an election, China does not need to put pressure on Taiwanese companies, demanding they declare a position, or even that they directly support a candidate they prefer," Lai said. He warned that Taiwanese companies will lose their confidence in China and if they feel scared will shift production elsewhere. Ko Wen-Je, meanwhile, said that China should explain the probe, adding the biggest problem here was that Taiwan had no way to communicate with the mainland on behalf of Taiwanese companies. Doctors pulled out a spider from the ear of a 64-year-old woman in Taiwan. After struggling with a strange sensation in her left ear with incessant clicking and rustling sounds, a woman visited an ear, nose and throat clinic. According to the case study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the doctors figured it was a spider moving about her ear canal. The spider had discarded its exoskeleton and sat near it. The doctors used a tube to pull out the spider and exoskeleton. The journal also posted a video on X, saying, "A woman with hypertension presented to the clinic with a 4-day history of abnormal sounds in her ear. On examination, a small spider was seen moving within the external auditory canal of the left ear. The moulted exoskeleton of the spider was also present." "She didn't feel the pain because the spider was about 2 to 3 millimetres," said Dr. Tengchin Wang, the report's co-author and the director of the otolaryngology department at Tainan Municipal Hospital. He had seen ants, moths, cockroaches, and mosquitoes inside people's ears. However, Dr. Wang had never seen a case where the insect moulted inside the ear canal. In his report, he requested the public to consult a doctor if they ever experience such symptoms. Doctors in the United States report that while rare, it is not unheard of to find an insect in a person's ear, the NBS News reported. Studies suggest that at least 14 per cent of objects found in people's ears are live insects. Other identified items are cotton balls, beads, and earring backings. ALSO READ | Exposure to certain chemicals in womb may lead to childhood weight gain: Study According to the National Library of Medical Science, people who suspect they might have an insect inside their ear must not stick their finger inside as the insect could sting them. Moreover, the person should avoid using tweezers or paper clips. Sharp instruments can damage the eardrums and cause bleeding or infection. Doctors also recommended avoiding Q-tips as they could lodge the insect farther in the ear canal. A safe home remedy is to pour vegetable oil, olive oil, or baby oil into the ear to drown the bug. It will help it slide out easily. Dr Wang recommends using lidocaine or ethanol to kill bigger insects. These chemicals prevent damage to the ear by stopping them from moving. People who have successfully removed the insect from their ear should also consult a doctor as a part of a bug could be left behind. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE
