And as we speak, right now, the Chinese are flying sorties and have their warships conducting exercises not far from Taiwan, and also they are engaging in economic pressure against Taiwan."&nbsp;</p>

So making investments in India or entering into cooperation with Indian electronics or manufacturing becomes a viable option," said Taiwanese Minister Joseph Wu.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking to our WION correspondent Sidhant Sibal from Taipei, the Taiwanese foreign minister also warned of disinformation campaigns ahead of the Indian election.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He said, "India is also going through an election and I'm sure the Chinese would like to create this open environment to shape the minds of the Indian people."&nbsp;</p>

<p>India and Taiwan have seen high-level developments, including the signing of a mobility pact. Under the mobility pact, Indian workers can travel to Taiwan which can boost the self-ruled island's economy. Taiwan is also working on opening up its office in Mumbai.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Wednesday (Apr 10) held talks with the pro-China former president of Taiwan in Beijing. The meeting comes ahead of the swearing-in ceremony of the new leader in the island state. Ma Ying-jeou, who remained president of Taiwan from 2008 to 2016, is on an 11-day tour across China. The meeting is highly significant as it’s the first time that a former president of Taiwan, which China sees as its own territory, has been hosted by China’s top leader. Previously, the two leaders met in Singapore in 2015.</p>

<h2><strong>Xi opposes ‘Taiwan’s independence’</strong></h2>

<p>In his remarks during the meeting, Xi Jinping praised Ma for opposing ‘Taiwan’s independence’ and promoting “cross-strait exchanges and agreeing that both sides of the strait belong to one China.”</p>

<p>“Compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are all Chinese people. There is no grudge that cannot be resolved, no issue that cannot be discussed and no force that can separate us,” Xi said. “External interference cannot stop the historic trend of the reunion of the family and the country,” he added.</p>

<p>In response, Ma agreed that both people belonged to the Chinese nation, despite the other side of the strait developing under different conditions.</p>

<p>“If a war breaks out between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, it will be an unbearable burden for the Chinese nation,” Ma said. “I sincerely hope that both sides respect the values and way of life treasured by the people and maintain peace across the strait,” the ex-Taiwan leader added.</p>

There is no grudge that cannot be resolved, no issue that cannot be discussed and no force that can separate us,” Xi said. “External interference cannot stop the historic trend of the reunion of the family and the country,” he added. <p>The earthquake struck&nbsp;in the morning just as people were headed for work and school and even triggered a tsunami warning for southern Japan and the Philippines. The warnings were lifted later in the day.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Taiwan’s weather agency recorded more than 50 aftershocks which could be felt as far as Taipei.&nbsp;At least nine people have been killed and 946 others have been injured, according to Reuters citing&nbsp;Taiwanese officials.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“At present the most important thing, the top priority, is to rescue people,” said President-elect Lai Ching-te, outside one of the collapsed buildings in Hualien.</p>

<p>Taiwanese fire authorities reported that 50 workers travelling in minibuses to a hotel in a national park were missing after they lost contact&nbsp;and said rescuers were looking for them.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Additionally, 80 people were reportedly trapped in a mining area, however, it was not immediately clear if they were inside the mine.</p>

<p>Some 70 people who were trapped in tunnels around Hualien city were evacuated, said Taiwanese fire authorities.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Taiwan’s central news agency said the quake was the biggest since the magnitude 7.6 which struck in 1999 and killed at least 2,400 people and damaged or destroyed 50,000 buildings.<br />
