In response to the recent approval of the US State Department's $300 million arms sale to Taiwan, China announced on Sunday that it would impose sanctions on five American military manufacturers.

This is based on a Reuters report.

The move adds another layer of complexity to the already strained relations between the two global powers.

China perceives Taiwan as part of its territory, a stance vehemently rejected by Taiwan's democratically elected government.

The impending sanctions were unveiled just days before Taiwan's crucial presidential and parliamentary elections on January 13, which Beijing has framed as a pivotal choice between war and peace.

According to a foreign ministry spokesperson, these sanctions are a direct response to arms deals that "seriously undermine China's sovereignty and security interests, seriously jeopardise peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait".

The focal point of China's discontent lies in the US State Department's green light for selling equipment designed to bolster Taiwan's tactical information systems.

This move has further strained diplomatic ties, fuelling Beijing's suspicion of foreign interference in what it considers a domestic matter.

The targeted companies facing sanctions include BAE Systems Land and Armaments, Alliant Techsystems Operations, AeroVironment, Viasat, and Data Link Solutions.

China's measures will involve freezing the assets of these companies and prohibiting any individuals or entities within its borders from engaging with them.

China vs US intensifies: Dragon nation imposes sanctions on US defence giants amid growing Taiwan tensions

In a significant event that unfolded just days before Taiwan's crucial presidential election, a Chinese satellite launch set off Taiwan's emergency phone alert system, raising security concerns across the region.

Chinese state media reported that Beijing had achieved a successful launch of the "Einstein Probe" satellite using the Long March-2C carrier rocket at the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre. According to CCTV, the satellite entered its designated orbit, marking the launch as a "complete success."

Emergency alert in Taiwan

Simultaneously, phones across Taiwan were activated with an emergency alert message. The alert in Chinese warned the public about the satellite flying over the southern airspace, However, the English version of the message described it as an "air raid alert," cautioning against a "missile flyover Taiwan airspace."

The emergency alert coincided with Taiwan's Foreign Minister Joseph Wu holding a press conference in Taipei with foreign reporters ahead of the upcoming presidential election.

"When a rocket is openly flying in our sky, some of their tubes or debris will fall in this region," Wu told reporters.

"That's the reason why our national alert centre will issue this kind of alert. It has happened before," he added.

As Taiwan enters election week, Beijing's aggressive actions have multiplied. Fighter jets, reconnaissance drones and naval ships have reportedly been spotted around the island. Since December, more than 20 balloons have crossed the median line separating China from Taiwan.

China multiplies show of military force as Taiwan enters election week

Despite a population of just 23.5 million people, Taiwan’s election carries an outsized importance due to its disputed political status. While de facto independent since the 1940s, the island and its outlying territories are still claimed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) – something nearly all Taiwanese reject but fear saying publicly because of the risk of war.

China and Taiwan's complicated history | Why China matters in Taiwan

The Taiwanese defence ministry, on Monday (Jan 8) said it detected three more Chinese balloons flying over the Taiwan Strait on Sunday, one of which crossed the island. Notably, the self-governed island, which is set to hold its key elections later this week, has witnessed a spate of such balloons over the past month or so.

‘Psychological warfare’

The balloons on Sunday were seen a day after Taiwan accused China of threatening aviation safety and waging psychological warfare on the island’s people ahead of key Taiwanese elections.

The possibility that China could be using balloons for spying became a global issue last February when the United States shot down what it said was a Chinese surveillance balloon. However, Beijing has since said that the balloon was a civilian craft that accidentally drifted astray.

Taiwan has reported an increased presence of the Chinese military and activity around the island and has been on high alert ahead of this Saturday’s (Jan 13) presidential and parliamentary elections.

The latest incident was mentioned in the ministry’s daily report on Chinese military activities over the past 24 hours. A report by Reuters citing a map by the ministry said that only one of the three balloons spotted crossed the Taiwan island, right at its southern tip.

The balloons all headed east before vanishing, Taiwan’s defence ministry said.

The ruling Democratic Progressive Party’s vice presidential candidate Hsiao Bi-khim, on Monday said China should stop harassing Taiwan. “We do not welcome the use of intimidation and threats to interfere with the lives of Taiwan’s people at any time.”

She added, “Not only this week, we hope peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait can continue for a long time.”

China’s ‘grey zone’ tactics

The Taiwanese officials have accused Beijing of exerting military and economic pressure in an attempt to interfere in the elections. China views the self-ruled island as its own territory, a claim Taiwan’s government has time and time again rejected.

Beijing has long flexed its military prowess against Taiwan by sending fighter jets, reconnaissance drones and naval ships almost daily. However, since December, the island’s defence ministry has been reporting that mysterious balloons have crossed the narrow Taiwan Strait separating the island from China.

Over the past week or so, Taiwan’s defence ministry said some balloons had flown over Taiwan island near major air bases. These incidents prompted the Taiwanese ministry to issue a strongly worded statement on Saturday, condemning China’s actions.

“We also express our condemnation of the Chinese communists’ disregard for aviation safety and its disregard for the safety of passengers on cross-Taiwan Strait and international flights,” said the statement.

The ministry said that its analysis of these actions was that the balloons were part of China’s “grey zone” tactics against Taiwan “in an attempt to use cognitive warfare to affect the morale of our people.”

In a separate statement on Saturday, Taiwan’s defence ministry said that it detected two more Chinese balloons, one of which briefly flew over the far northern tip of the island.

They are targetting the island's widespread religious community that would make up for a significant number of votes on January 13. In new Taipei city, frontrunner Lai Ching-Te placed his offerings at the lixing fude temple.

Three Chinese balloons fly across Taiwan island days ahead of polls

China's "reunification" with Taiwan is inevitable, President Xi Jinping said in his New Year's address on Sunday, striking a stronger tone than he did last year with less than two weeks to go before the Chinese-claimed island elects a new leader.

Days before Taiwanese elections, Xi Jinping reiterates reunification bid

Taiwan's government is reportedly exploring the possibility of joining the International Criminal Court (ICC) as part of its strategy to improve deterrence against a potential Chinese attack or invasion.

Taiwan's ICC membership initially recommended in an independent annual review of the nation's human rights efforts, is now under discussion among members of Taiwan's judiciary, government, and legal profession.

According to The Guardian, the proponents argue that this move would not only help bolster the international legal system's presence in Asia but also increase Taiwan's global participation, countering Beijing's efforts to isolate the self-ruled island nation.

The ICC, established by the Rome Statute in 2002, focuses on four core international crimes: genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and crimes of aggression.

Meaning of Taiwan's potential inclusion into ICC

Supporters of Taiwan's ICC membership assert that it could pave the way for investigations and warrants against Chinese leader Xi Jinping under international law if he were to order or oversee acts of war or war crimes against Taiwan.

There are two potential mechanisms for Taiwan to seek ICC membership: signing up to the Rome Statute or the president unilaterally declaring acceptance of ICC jurisdiction over Taiwan's territory. However, Taiwan's status as a non-UN member state, recognised by only 13 countries, adds complexity to its pursuit of ICC membership.

China's defence ministry on Thursday accused Taiwan's leadership of "hyping up" claims that Beijing is interfering in the self-ruled island's upcoming presidential election. Taipei officials have repeatedly raised concerns about election interference and misinformation, and the January 13 vote comes during an escalating pressure campaign by Beijing, which claims the island as part of its territory.

China says Taiwan election interference claims are exaggerated

Just a couple of weeks ahead of the January 13 election in Taiwan, Chinese President Xi Jinping has vowed to prevent anyone from splitting the island from China. His comments assume significance given how Beijing has been ramping up military and political pressure to assert its sovereignty claims over Taipei.

A new research published by Taiwan's Information Environment Research Centre (IORG) has revealed that people using the short-video app Douyin, the Chinese-language version of TikTok are more likely to subscribe to views in favour of the communist Chinese government.

A new research published by Taiwan's Information Environment Research Centre (IORG) has revealed that people using the short-video app Douyin, the Chinese-language version of TikTok are more likely to subscribe to views in favour of the communist Chinese government. In the study, 18.2 per cent of respondents identified themselves as Chinese-speaking TikTok users who spent an average of 4.4 days per week active on the app. This particular bracket of respondents was more likely, by up to 10 percentage points or more, to agree with China's political positions while being sceptic about the policies of the United States. The majority of Chinese-speaking TikTok users strongly harboured beliefs that the Taiwanese government's closer relations with the US were "provoking China" and likely to lead to a conflict across the Taiwan Strait. Additionally, the respondents believed that Taiwan's economic prosperity was closely linked to the island nation signing various trade deals with Beijing. According to analytics service QuestMobile, based in Beijing, TikTok's Chinese language cousin Douyin had around 750 million monthly active users as of May. Since Taiwan is the frontline of China's information war, the increased use of Douyin is being seen as a national security threat. Last year, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) warned that TikTok and Douyin were a threat to national security. Afterwards, TikTok was banned on government devices citing cybersecurity concerns. Taiwan's Defense Ministry reported, on Sunday, that in the past 24 hours, it identified eight Chinese fighter jets crossing the so-called median line of the Taiwan Strait, along with one Chinese balloon.

Taiwan sends its own forces to monitor move

Just weeks before the Taiwanese elections, Beijing announced that it will permit imports of high-value fish from the island, a problem which was raised specifically by the main opposition party Kuomintang on his visit to mainland China earlier this year.

Now once again, the General Administration of Customs will allow imports of grouper fish – which is a high-value aquaculture item found in Taiwan – from registered farms on the island from Friday, according to a notice on the customs website.

The imports were suspended by Beijing in June last year as it said that excessive levels of oxytetracycline and banned chemicals were found in the fish. Oxytetracycline is a type of antibiotic.

Taiwan rejects China's accusations

The accusation was rejected by the Taiwanese authorities. The mainland’s Taiwan Affairs Office spokeswoman Zhu Fenglian said that the decision was based on “a comprehensive assessment of relevant corrective measures” after information regarding measures taken for addressing the problem was provided by Taiwanese industry representatives to the mainland.

The representatives expressed “strong hope” that imports can resume, as per the state news agency Xinhua. As per the report, a few Taiwanese grouper farming enterprises have gone ahead and registered with mainland customs authorities and will begin exporting immediately.

The announcement has been made by Beijing just weeks before the presidential election in Taiwan on January 13. The election is set to shape future cross-strait relations after years of tension during the
presidency of Tsai Ing-wen, who belongs to the independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party and came to power in 2016.

Mainland China resumes fish imports from Taiwan weeks before polls

In China's eyes, all three Taiwan presidential candidates are separatists, the frontrunner to be the island's next leader said on Wednesday in a fractious joint televised address with the other contenders. The January 13 presidential and parliamentary elections will define Chinese-claimed Taiwan's ties with Beijing and are happening as China steps up military activities around the island to assert its sovereignty claims.

Two suspected Chinese weather balloons flew across the sensitive Taiwan Strait on Sunday but stayed well to the north of Taiwan, the island's defence ministry said on Monday, the second time this month Taipei has reported them nearby.

The potential for China to use balloons for spying became a global issue in February when the United States shot down what it said was a Chinese surveillance balloon, but which China said was a civilian craft that accidentally drifted astray.

Taiwan is on high alert for Chinese activities, both military and political, ahead of the Jan. 13 presidential and parliamentary election. Taipei has warned of Beijing's efforts to interfere in the ballot to get voters to pick candidates China may prefer.

Taiwan's defence ministry said the two balloons were detected at 9:03 a.m. (0103GMT) and 2:43 p.m. (0643GMT) after crossing the strait's median 110 nautical miles (204 km)northwest of the northern Taiwanese port city of Keelung.

The balloons flew at an altitude of about 27,000 feet (3,230 metres), headed east and disappeared at 9:36 am and 4:35 pm respectively, the ministry added.

The ministry's initial judgment is that they were weather balloons, spokesperson Sun Li-fang said.

China's defence ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The earlier balloon, which Taiwan reported crossing the Taiwan Strait on Dec. 7, was most likely also a weather platform, Taiwan's defence ministry said at the time, adding that officials had announced its detection in the interests of transparency.
