It has been a woeful Ashes campaign for England so far Down Under as they have already conceded the series with three straight defeats in the first three games. However, the visitors managed to save some pride with a draw in the fourth Test, which saw Australia dominating the proceedings for the most part of the game once again.

Australia needed six wickets in the final session on Day 5 of the SCG encounter and came close to pulling off a victory but were left frustrated by Broad and Anderson. The hosts gave their all but managed to pick only five of the remaining six wickets as England held on to draw the game.

Stuart Broad and James Anderson steered England to 270 for nine at the close of play in the evening gloom, well short of the victory target of 388 but a huge turnaround after heavy losses in Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne.

Australia skipper Pat Cummins was unable to use pace in a tense final three overs because of the fading light and his predecessor Steve Smith took his first test wicket in almost six years to dismiss Jack Leach.

That left Australia needing one wicket in the last two overs but Broad and Anderson, despite the fielders crowding around them, stood firm to frustrate the home side.

"It`s been a difficult tour, but we stood up and found a way to get a result out of this game," said Root. 
"We wanted to put pride back into the badge. The way we went about it in this game, we did that. We know there`s a long way to go. It would be nice to front up again next week and go one better."

Jack Leach is a good bowler on turning pitches and, hence, was successful in India. However, in Australia, you have to control that one end...Even the overall attitude towards spin isn't encouragiing. In the second Test when spin was playing a huge part, Nathan Lyon bowled 25 overs out of 80 while England had only 20 overs from 150 overs allocated to spin. In general, the attitude towards spin is like that...they get found out in away Tests."

But if you look at the India-SA series, you ask yourself 'why is it that Indian batters have good technique and can adapt' but the English batters cannot...It maybe because the County period is from early April to end of September. He added, "Also Eoin Morgan (limited-overs skipper) gets his best white-ball players but I don't think Joe Root gets the same privilege&nbsp;or freedom like Morgan has...In 2022, they got to prioritise Test cricket in England. They need to prioritise County Championship games first and then build the schedule around that. England should always be looking to play their best XI, regardless of the schedule and team they are playing against."

"This England team is good in swinging conditions. But away from England, they aren't...It will be interesting to see how they perform in West Indies in their own conditions (upcoming tour in 2022). In recent times, they are not a good team away from home but at home, they compete well due to the conditions. We need to produce harder, flatter and firmer pitches where spinners can play a role in 3rd or 4th Day and the medium-pacers are there, but they don't play a bigger role like they do right now. Hit the deck a bit more...And young batters need to learn how to build an innings at the Test level," said Panesar.

England head coach Chris Silverwood has confirmed that pace bowling stalwarts James Anderson and Stuart Broad are available for selection for the second Ashes Test here from December 16, but he has "not told anyone they are playing yet". 
 
Silverwood and England captain Joe Root have been criticised for dropping the duo for the opening Ashes Test at Brisbane, which Australia won by nine wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the five-Test series.

Broad too seemed unhappy after being included in the 12-member squad the previous day and then being dropped on the morning of The Gabba Test. "It would be wrong in this scenario to kick up a stink. I've been left out on numerous occasions and sometimes it comes as a real surprise," Broad wrote in his column for Daily Mail after England`s defeat. 
 
On Sunday evening Silverwood said that, "They are available, yes. Jimmy (Anderson) will be fit and ready to go for the second Test, as will Stuart (Broad). But I have not told anyone they are playing yet. 
 
"The guys have already been training with the pink ball behind the scenes and what we have got is a very skilful set of bowlers. We have talent and we still have two of the best up our sleeve as well," Silverwood was quoted as saying by metro.co.uk. 
 
England had gone with pacers Ollie Robinson, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood and Ben Stokes and spinner Jack Leach in the Test at The Gabba. While the pace bowlers were economical to some extent, 30-year-old left-arm spinner Leach bled runs, conceding 102 in 13 overs at an economy rate of nearly eight.

Silverwood said he was unfazed by the criticism and was willing to take responsibility for the big loss. 
 
"It is part of my role to take the criticism because the buck stops with me. I have no problem with that and it is how it should be, but we have to work with what we have got," he added.
