Starbucks faces strike amid red cup day promotional event | World Business Watch

Starbucks employees at hundreds of stores across the United States walked off their jobs on Red Cup Day, which is a key promotional event for the coffee giant. The Workers United, representing over 9,000 Starbucks employees at approximately 360 U.S. stores, announced the walkout on social media on Thursday.

Starbucks maintained that the majority of its stores remained open, while acknowledging strikes at a few dozen locations.

Red Cup Day, an annual event where Starbucks distributes free holiday-themed cups to customers, has traditionally been a major traffic driver for the company. Placer.ai data indicated a 94 per cent surge in U.S. Starbucks store visits on the same day last year compared to the daily average.

Workers United emphasised the need for improved staffing and schedules. The group argued that the event poses significant challenges to staff, leading to long wait times and customer frustration. The union described it as one of the "most infamously hard, understaffed days."

Outside Starbucks' Astor Place outlet at New York University's campus, around a dozen workers picketed, chanting slogans such as "no contract, no coffee." Despite the walkout, the outlet continued to serve customers.

Reuters quoted Mary Boca, a Starbucks employee, as emphasising the need for higher pay and increased staffing. She also revealed that her location does not allow customers to tip, resulting in a financial loss for employees.

Starbucks, facing criticism for alleged understaffing and challenging working conditions, has witnessed labour actions in the past. Last year, employees at over 100 U.S. company-owned Starbucks locations participated in a one-day strike on Red Cup day.

Recently, Starbucks announced a minimum three per cent hourly pay raise for U.S. retail workers from 2024. However, employees found the move inadequate, deeming it "tone-deaf" given the company's robust financial performance, including an 11 per cent increase in fourth-quarter revenue.

Malaysians boycotting McDonalds, Burger King over support to Israel, Palestine responds

Starbucks is setting its sights on expansion and cost savings as the renowned coffee chain aims to solidify its position in the global market. During the company's "Reinvention Update and Holiday Launch" conference on Friday, Starbucks CEO Laxman Narasimhan announced an ambitious plan to increase the brand's global store count to 55,000 by the year 2030.

Starbucks intends to pursue an aggressive growth strategy by enhancing the efficiency of its cafes and strengthening its digital business and rewards program. The company is geared toward accelerating renovations in existing stores while simultaneously opening new locations catering to on-the-go customers, featuring formats like double-sided drive-thrus. Furthermore, Starbucks is determined to double its current base of 75 million rewards members over the next five years, with plans to collaborate with partners in the finance and hospitality sectors.

According to a media report, Narasimhan emphasised that the cornerstone of this strategy will be a heightened focus on efficiency, as Starbucks aims to achieve over $3 billion in cost savings. A significant portion of these savings is anticipated to be derived from improvements in the supply chain. Additionally, Starbucks has plans to elevate barista compensation through the provision of more hours and increased wages.

In the past, Starbucks had unveiled a comprehensive plan to revamp its cafes, aimed at helping baristas manage increased workloads in light of the significant shift toward online ordering and heightened personalisation. BNN Bloomberg cited Starbuck’s Chief Financial Officer Rachel Ruggeri, who revealed that the company is committed to investing $1 billion in fiscal year 2024, primarily to boost wages, upgrade equipment, and enhance digital and supply chain operations.

US: Fired Starbucks employee leaks secret coffee recipes online in vengeance

Beginning with a single shop in 1971 in downtown Seattle, Starbucks has transformed into a well-established global brand and a leading coffee giant. With over 33,000 coffee shops, Starbucks came to life with the vision of its three founders, Jerry Baldwin, Gordon Bowker and Zev Siegel, who named it after “Starbuk”, the first mate in the classic novel ‘Moby Dick’, authored by Herman Melville.

Inspired by the coffee roasting entrepreneur, Alfred Peet, the founders decided to base their business model on selling high-quality coffee beans and equipment. As Starbucks emerged out of the shadows of its competitors by the early 1980, a new era began. This was after Howard Schultz joined in 1982 as the head of marketing.

The beginning of a new era

Schultz noticed that first-time customers were often confused in the stores due to their limited knowledge about fine coffees. So, he worked with store employees to develop customer-friendly sales skills and created brochures to help customers learn about the company’s products.

When Schultz visited Milan in the spring of 1983, he had the biggest idea for the future of Starbucks. He was impressed by the cafés in Italy and learned that Milan alone had 1,500 coffee shops. Inspired, he thought of transforming the regional business into a national chain of coffee shops. Baldwin and Bowker, however, were unenthusiastic about Schultz’s suggestion since they preferred that Starbucks remained purely a coffee and equipment retailer rather than it evolving into a café.

The shift from a retailer of coffee beans to a chain of cafés

Schultz quit Starbucks in 1985 after he was unable to convince the founders and launched his own coffee chain, named Il Giornale, which swiftly spread to other cities. However, Il Giornale purchased Starbucks in 1987, and all operations were merged under the Starbucks brand. Along with the sale of beans and equipment, the management devised a dedicated café concept for company.

The coffee shop network expanded from 20 locations to having more than 100 in just four years. After the firm went public in 1992, Starbucks continued to see rapid growth. Starbucks started operating in locations outside of North America in 1996, and it quickly grew to become the biggest coffee shop company worldwide.

What has made Starbucks so successful?

Based on a study by Danish analyst Martin Roll, Starbuck’s success has been attributed to its brand philosophy, brand strategy and brand communication.

Brand Philosophy

Since its early days in the 1990’s, the coffee shop chain has built its brand through a great customer experience. Informal and casual conversations between employees and customers are used to capture the overall mood and gather feedback, in addition to quantitative market research.

Brand Strategy

The corporation has made enormous investments to create a uniform look and feel for its locations, products, and food and beverages. One of the most recognisable trademarks in the world is the Starbucks Siren. One of the main goals of the company’s worldwide expansion strategy is to replicate the Starbucks experience. Because of this, regardless of whether a store is located in New York, New Mexico, Moscow, Tokyo, or Shanghai, customers will essentially have a consistent experience.

Brand Communication

Without brand communication, one of Starbucks’ most prized intangible assets would not have been feasible. The brand’s internal creative team published its branding standards on its website in October 2019. Starbucks has invested a substantial sum of money in marketing and brand awareness projects. In 2008, the company spent around $200 million, while the company was experiencing slow growth. Flashback Friday: Tracing the success of coffee giant Starbucks

Starbucks on Tuesday released its latest quarterly earnings, impressively surpassing analysts' earnings expectations.

However, the company faced a slight setback in same-store sales, falling short of Wall Street's target at 10 per cent instead of the anticipated 11 per cent.

Nevertheless, Starbucks managed to exceed analysts' projections with adjusted earnings per share of $1, outperforming the predicted 95 cents.

The coffee chain slightly lifted its outlook for full-year earnings growth, but its shares experienced a marginal dip in after-hours trading.

The company's domestic market remains robust, though it faced a minor hiccup with same-store sales growth in North America reaching 7 per cent, falling short of the expected 8.4 per cent.

Moreover, to cater to its younger, more affluent customers in the United States, Starbucks introduced new beverages and expanded food choices, resulting in increased average customer sales.

However, quarterly transactions in North America only grew by 1 per cent, a notable drop compared to the 6 per cent increase seen in the previous quarter.

Starbucks thrives in China with 46% Sales surge

Starbucks experienced a remarkable resurgence in China, witnessing a 46 per cent surge in comparable sales during the third quarter. Corporate managers said that this rebound aligned with their expectations and is anticipated to continue.

As per Bank of America Global Research analysts cited by Reuters, Chinese city travel witnessed a remarkable surge of approximately 128 per cent in the third quarter, rebounding to pre-pandemic levels seen in 2019.

Starbucks projects revenue pressure.

In a meeting with investors, Starbucks officials expressed their expectation of ongoing revenue pressure in the fourth quarter, primarily driven by the at-home coffee business. They also anticipate a decrease in pricing trends after several months of price increases.

Furthermore, Starbucks achieved a global comparable sales increase of 10 per cent, slightly below analysts' forecasts of an 11.8 per cent rise, according to Refinitiv IBES data. Additionally, same-store sales grew by 24 percent in its overseas business, falling short of the projected 25.7 per cent.

Nevertheless, the company managed to enhance its adjusted operating margin to 17.4 per cent in the quarter that ended on July 2, up from 16.9 per cent in the previous year. This improvement was attributed to lower commodity prices, which helped offset the impact of increased investments in pay and worker benefits.

Starbucks misses quarterly sales targets, expects sustained rebound in China

About 150 unionised Starbucks stores in the United States will be going on strike on Friday as workers express their dissatisfaction with the coffee chain's policy regarding Pride decorations in stores. The union representing organised stores, Starbucks Workers United, alleges that Starbucks has restricted Pride Month decorations in certain locations, citing a "hypocritical treatment of LGBTQIA+ workers". Starbucks has vehemently denied these claims, as per media reports.

Starbucks Workers United announced on Twitter that around 3,500 employees will be participating in the strike over the next week. The union is calling attention to what they perceive as inconsistencies in Starbucks' responses based on internal documents and testimonies from store managers.

Starbucks' response

Starbucks clarified that store leaders have the autonomy to decorate their stores for Pride and other heritage months as long as the decorations adhere to safety guidelines. The company claims to be unaware of any company-owned stores banning Pride decorations and pointed out that many locations have showcased their Pride decorations on social media.

A Starbucks spokesperson emphasised the company's unwavering support for the LGBTQIA+ community and denied any changes to the policy.

“We unwaveringly support the LGBTQIA2+ community. There has been no change to any policy on this matter and we continue to encourage our store leaders to celebrate with their communities including for US Pride month in June,” the Starbucks spokesperson said and added, “We’re deeply concerned by false information that is being spread.”

Union's counterargument

The union countered Starbucks' response on Twitter, pointing to an article reporting Pride decor bans in approximately 100 locations across parts of Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Missouri, which are more conservative regions. The union alleges that Starbucks is succumbing to pressure by removing Pride decorations.

Starbucks' progressive policies

While Starbucks has a history of progressive policies for its employees, including extending full health benefits to same-sex partners in 1988 and providing health coverage for gender reassignment surgery in 2013, the company has faced criticism for cracking down on unionisation efforts. Former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz has been a vocal opponent of unions, stating that he doesn't believe unions have a place in Starbucks.

Target removes Pride products amid anti-LGBTQ campaign

The controversy surrounding Starbucks comes after Target, a major retail corporation, announced in May that it was taking the step to remove certain products celebrating Pride Month from its shelves.

The decision came in response to what the company described as a "volatile" anti-LGBTQ campaign targeting both Target and its employees. Target stated that the threats made against its employees had a detrimental impact on their sense of safety and well-being.

Starbucks workers at 150 stores in the US to strike over Pride decor

Ahead of World Refugee Day dozens of multinational companies have vowed to hire refugees from across Europe including more than 13,000 refugees from Ukraine over the next three years, on Monday (June 18). The pledge was made at a business summit in Paris organised by the Tent Partnership for Refugees, a global business coalition of over 300 companies.

Employment for refugees in Europe

A day before World Refugee Day, 41 companies including Amazon, Marriott, Accenture, Amazon, Starbucks, Microsoft and so on, have said they would hire, connect to work or train a total of 250,000 refugees out of which 13,680 would be getting jobs directly in those companies.

The pledges made on Monday amount to the single largest batch of commitments made in the history of the Tent Partnership for Refugees since it was founded back in 2016, reported CNN.

Kelly Clements, United Nations deputy high commissioner for refugees, on Monday said, “Every number is a story of an individual family who left everything, seeking safety, seeking protection and wanting to be able to rebuild as quickly as possible.”

She added, “So the commitments that businesses are going to make on Monday are absolutely essential.” According to the UN official, 110 million people have been displaced across the world out of which an estimated 12 million are from Ukraine and more than half of them live in Europe.

The event in Paris was organised by Tent Partnership for Refugees which is a nonprofit founded by Chobani CEO Hamdi Ulukaya which connects businesses and refugees. Notably, the group’s first summit was held last year in the United States and witnessed pledges to hire 22,725 refugees.

Which companies have joined the pledge?

The biggest pledge, on Monday, was made by Amazon which has vowed to hire at least 5,000 refugees in Europe over the next three years. This would be followed by Marriott and Hilton with 1,500 each, Starbucks and ISS with 1,000 each, reported the Associated Press. Meanwhile, brands like Adidas, L’Oreal, PepsiCo, Hyatt, and so on have made smaller commitments.

“This is good for us as a company because the opportunity to add diversity to our workforce will continue to make us a stronger company,” said Amazon Vice President overseeing human resources, Ofori Agboka, as quoted by AP.

He added that many of these jobs would be hourly roles at fulfilment and storage centres and in transport and delivery. This comes after the company announced mass layoffs and fired thousands of employees late last year. However, Agboka said that the job cuts primarily affected salaried office jobs.

Similarly, Marriott also said their jobs will predominantly be hourly positions like housekeepers, kitchen staff and front desk attendants. Marriott International CEO Anthony Capuano said, “We’re seeing record levels of demand for our properties across many markets here in Europe,” adding that the company is “hiring aggressively” to meet the rising demand, reported AP.

The latest ad campaign of coffee giant Starbucks on transgenders triggered a controversy as many users called it a promotion of the “Woke culture” and the hashtag “Boycott Starbucks” trended on Twitter.

On Wednesday, a campaign was launched by the American coffeehouse chain with the title ‘it starts with your name’ to give a message of acceptance and inclusivity in society. Under the campaign, a video was shared by Starbucks India which featured a transgender woman who was meeting her parents at one of its outlets.

In the video, a transgender woman with the name “Arpita” appears to be meeting her parents after a long time. The father of the woman looks upset over some situation, while the mother tries to calm him down.

When Arpita reaches the coffee shop, she introduces herself to her parents as “Arpita and not Arpit”, which was her birth name. Her initially hesitant parents finally accept her actual identity and the ad ends with the three enjoying the Starbucks together after her father reassures her, “You will always be my child. 'It Starts With Your Name' | 'Boycott Starbucks' trends over coffee giant's viral transgender ad

Indian are calling to boycott Starbucks over its advertisement promoting transgender acceptance and inclusivity. Netizens say the western corporation is preaching to Indian society. Many have labelled it too woke and extremist American gender ideology.

Gravitas: Why are Indians calling to boycott Starbucks

US coffeehouse chain Starbucks recorded a revenue of over 1,000 crore rupees or over 130 million US dollars in India in the last fiscal, which ended in march 2023. That's a milestone for Starbucks in India.

We have all dreamed of having bosses who will join us and work alongside us, but alas, not everyone is that lucky. However, the new Starbucks boss, Laxman Narasimhan, will do just that. According to a letter he sent to the coffee chain employees, Narasimhan will be trying his hand at being a barista and will work at Starbucks stores half a day every month. As part of his training before taking over as CEO of Starbucks, he reportedly underwent a six months "immersive" training experience where he also learnt how to be a barista.

Starbucks' new CEO Laxman Narasimhan says will work as a Barista

Starbucks workers at more than 100 stores across the nation are striking to demand an end to the company’s union-busting practices, Starbucks Workers United said Wednesday. The strike includes a rally at the company’s Seattle headquarters at noon Pacific time, plus strikes at dozens of other stores from coast to coast, according to the union.

A strike by unionised Starbucks baristas against the company's alleged anti-union coercion was planned on Wednesday at approximately 100 cafes as they welcomed their new CEO Laxman Narasimhan.

Baristas on strike from Oregon and Washington state gathered in Seattle for a midday demonstration in front of Starbucks headquarters. The work stoppage is the latest attempt by the union Starbucks Workers Union to compel changes at the global coffee brand, as reported by Bloomberg.

The union has won elections at about 290 of the company's roughly 9,000 corporate-owned US cafés after claiming an initial historic victory in Buffalo, New York, 15 months ago.

However, the number of new petitions for union recognition has decreased as a result of workers' claims that the company has been retaliating against them in stores and stalling negotiations.

As per the report, most of them were very important people, vital to the day-to-day functioning of the company. Apple's top executives are leaving at a breakneck speed. Here's why

The U.S Senator Bernie Sanders has refused to back down and calls to make Starbucks's interim chief executive officer Howard Schultz who is stepping down this month testified a hearing for the company's compliance with labor laws in the United States.

Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz stepping down from position in March

Starbucks illegally fired six workers in New York state while pursuing a pushback against unions, a US National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) judge ruled. The judge said that the leading coffee chain committed "egregious and widespread" violations of federal labour law at its stores in cities of Buffalo and Rochester in the United States.

Starbucks has been told to rehire the workers it fired. The leading coffee chain has also been ordered to compensate others who were affected.

Starbucks, while clarifying its now legally sanctioned actions, said that what it did was lawful and in line with policies.

"We believe the decision and the remedies ordered are inappropriate given the record in this matter and are considering all options to obtain further legal review," Starbucks was quoted as saying by the BBC.

The NLRB is an independent federal agency in the United States. It has the legal mandate to safeguard employees' rights to unionise at their workplaces.

Michael Sanabria, a Starbucks barista in Buffalo, told media that the ruling was "such a massive win for us, and for the labour movement as a whole."

"The decision results from months of tireless organising by workers... demanding better working conditions in the face of historical, monumental, and now deemed illegal union-busting," Michelle Eisen, a barista at another Starbucks location in Buffalo, was quoted as saying by the BBC.

On January 28, a voluntary recall of 300,000 vanilla Frappuccino drinks was initiated based on a note by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Following that, PepsiCo recalled more than 25,000 chilled coffee drink bottles based on the FDA recommendation.

The recall issued in this case is known as the "Class 2 Recall", which means that if the product is maintained in the market, it can cause temporary or permanent health issues among customers.

The issuance by the FDA is an outcome of the findings of glass pieces in the bottles; the fiasco could have caused serious harm. The bottles were then recalled, keeping in mind that customers had to be protected from any potential damage.

Why is PepsiCo coming into the picture?

It was almost 20 years ago, almost in 1994, when the North American Coffee Partnership (NACP) was formed. The NACP amalgamated the coffee giant brand Starbucks and the beverage mogul PepsiCo. This joint venture allowed Starbucks to provide its coffee expertise while PepsiCo took care of its distribution.

This Joint Venture alone has a 97% market share in RTD coffee.

However, the recent findings by the FDA have pushed back the outflow of their packaged bottles of Starbucks coffee, with further investigations being carried out to look into the problem.

As per reports, the batch containing the expiration dates of March 8th, May 29th, June 4th, and June 10th have been affected. Another report states that the distribution occurred in Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Starbucks orders employees to return to office three days a week

Starbucks workers around the US are gearing up for a three-day walkout that will start on Friday as part of their effort to unionise the coffee chain's stores. Over 1,000 baristas at 100 outlets, according to Starbucks Workers United, the labour union leading the operation, plan to strike. The longest strike of the one-year unionisation effort will occur this week. The second large strike by Starbucks US employees in the past month. On 17 November, 110 Starbucks workers went on a one-day strike. The company's annual Red Cup Day, when it provides reusable cups to customers who order holiday drinks, coincided with that campaign.

More than 264 of Starbucks’ 9,000 company-run US stores have been planning to unionise since late 2021. Starbucks condemns the unionization effort, saying the company functions better when it works directly with employees, without a union. But the company said last month that it respects employees’ lawful right to protest.

The company's first unionised location in Seattle, according to Workers United, was just shut down by Starbucks. According to Starbucks, the location was shut down for security concerns. About 50 outlets have started contract negotiations between Starbucks and the union, but no agreements have been reached.

It has been a controversial procedure. Since late last year, Workers United has filed at least 446 allegations of unfair labour practises against Starbucks with the National Labour Relations Board, alleging among other things that the business fired labour organisers and refused to engage in negotiations. The union has been accused of violating negotiation guidelines by taping sessions and posting the tapes online, according to the company, which has filed 47 complaints against the union.

So far, the labour protests haven’t appeared to diminish Starbucks’ sales. Starbucks said in November that its revenue increased 3 per cent to a record $8.41 billion in the July-September months.
