United States Starbucks employees went on a strike at a number of unionised shops on Thursday; the walkout was intended to affect more than 100 stores and was in response to the coffee giant's strategy for negotiating union contracts.

The Starbucks Workers United-led one-day walkout dubbed the "Red Cup Rebellion," fell on a popular holiday when retailers gave away reusable cups with certain purchases.

Staff distributed red union cups to interested clients in place of the branded ones.

Near Times Square in New York, workers could be seen holding signs for Starbucks Workers United, a group that advocates for almost 7,000 employees nationwide.

"It's something that is worth fighting for," said Jay Tosa, an employee, to AFP.

According to a statement from Starbucks Workers United, the action is being taken "in response to Starbucks' union-busting tactics and refusal to bargain."

The union expressed concern over pay and inconsistent scheduling, saying, "Unless Starbucks comes to the table and bargain in good faith for a fair contract, we can count for this to happen again."

In what comes as a victory for labour rights organisations and regulators, a National Labor Relations Board judge on Friday ruled that Starbucks illegally fired an employee at its Ann Arbor, Michigan store.

The judge ruled that Starbucks “acted with animus” when it fired the employee and ordered the multinational coffee chain to reinstate the fired worker with back pay.

Moreover, the company will have to hold a meeting with the employees, management as well as government representatives where a notice about workers' rights will be read and Starbucks will have to reassert the agency's filing that it broke the law.

Hannah Whitbeck, the employee in question was fired because she helped build support for unionising the Ann Arbor store.

“I would hope that they learn their lesson, that firing people because they want to start a union is not going to solve their problems. In fact, it’s only going to make it worse.” Whitbeck was quoted as saying by Bloomberg.

This is not the first time that Starbucks has been ordered by a court to re-hire its illegally fired employees.

As reported by WION, in August, a US federal court ordered the company to reinstate its seven employees who were also fired for unionising.

Last month, the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, a New York City agency sued Starbucks for wrongfully terminating a longtime worker and union organiser.

According to the agency, the case marks its first lawsuit for a violation of New York City’s “just cause” protections, a 2017 law meant to safeguard the interests of fast-food workers.

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is currently investigating hundreds of allegations of misconduct by Starbucks related to the union campaign, including claims of closing stores to dismantle unions, firing employees, and intimidating and threatening workers to prevent them from unionising.

While there is already a huge backlog of complaints, NLRB officials suggest that more cases will come to light in the coming year.

“Given the spike in case intake we are seeing in the field, we can expect even more cases to come before the board in fiscal year 2023,” said Lauren McFerran, NLRB chairperson.

Starbucks, on multiple occasions, has cleared that it is against any kind of unionising efforts.

The global mega coffee-chain will soon give its customers Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) along with their coffee. These NFTs will then lead to Starbucks experiences on the metaverse. Starbucks has also begun accepting requests to join a waitlist of people who would get early access to the Starbucks Odyssey the NFT linked program on Web3. Starbucks Odussey will be open to everyone later this year.

The company says that the new experience will build on the existing Starbucks Rewards model. It is a loyalty program Starbucks already has.

For Starbucks Odyssey, the company said it will use 'proof-of-stake' blockchain technology. This technology has been buily by Polygon and it reportedly uses less energy than older 'proof-of-work' blockchain technology.

How will the NFT program work?

When members log in to Starbucks Odyssey, they will be able to engage in 'journeys'. These will be series of activities. This may include stuff like playing interactive games or deepening knowledge about coffee and Starbucks and more

As a reward for completing the journeys, the member will be awarded a 'journey stamp' (NFT)

Starbucks also said that members will be able to also purchase 'limited edition stamps' on online marketplace within an app.

Ownership of the stamp will be secured on blockchain.

Each stamp will carry points based on how rare the stamp is. These stamps would then be able to be sold and bought on online marketplace.

As members collect more stamps they will have more points. These points will then be redeemable for unique experiences like a visit to Starbucks' Hacienda Alsacia coffee farm in Costa Rica.

Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, a New York City agency has sued Starbucks for wrongfully terminating a longtime worker and union organiser. Reportedly, the barista named Austin Locke was fired after he and his colleagues voted to unionise a Starbucks in Queens. According to the agency, the case marks its first lawsuit for a violation of New York City’s “just cause” protections, a 2017 law meant to safeguard the interests of the fast-food workers. Read more: Starbucks taps Indian-born Laxman Narasimhan as its next CEO, Twitter erupts with memes According to the lawsuit, Starbucks at the time of Austin's firing argued that he was fired for failing to fill out a COVID-19 questionnaire and falsely reporting that a supervisor made physical contact with him. In response to the filing of the lawsuit, the coffee chain refused to comment. “We do not comment on pending litigation. However, we do intend to defend against the alleged violations of the New York City Just Cause Law.” Read more: 'Intense culture of fear': Starbucks reportedly fires workers involved in union efforts As reported extensively by WION, over 55 distinct strikes by Starbucks employees have taken place in at least 17 different US states in recent months due to the company's vigorous opposition to a wave of unionisation. According to an estimate by Starbucks Workers United, the company has directly lost more than $375,000 due to the strikes. The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is currently investigating hundreds of allegations of misconduct by Starbucks related to the union campaign, including claims of closing stores to dismantle unions, firing employees, and intimidating and threatening workers to prevent them from unionising. Last month, a US federal court ordered Starbucks to reinstate its seven employees who were allegedly fired for unionising. Judge Sheryl H. Lipman at the US District Court of the Western District of Tennessee passed the judgement, terming the rehiring as "just and proper". Akin to the case in Queens, seven Starbucks baristas had attempted to unionise the Memphis branch of the company and were promptly fired. Starbucks taps Indian-born Laxman Narasimhan as its next CEO, Twitter erupts with memes

A woman inmate in California, USA who suffered a miscarriage in police custody six years ago has been awarded a compensatory sum of $480,000 by the government officials of Orange County.

Reportedly, the woman named Sandra Quinones who is no longer in custody, suffered a miscarriage on March 28, 2016 after her water broke during custody while the police officials showed extreme lethargy in taking her to the hospital, resulting in the death of the fetus.

The payment is part of a federal wrongful death lawsuit that was filed by Sandra on behalf of her lawyer Dick Herman.

In the lawsuit, Sandra claimed that after her water broke, she pressed the button in her cell, meant to summon the police officials for help. However, for more than two hours, not a single officer turned up at her cell while she writhed in pain.

US inmate who suffered miscarriage as police officials stopped at Starbucks for coffee to be paid $480,000

As per the workers' group Starbucks Workers United, more than 85 workers at Starbucks have been fired over the past several months, The Guardian reported. What's alarming is that the report mentioned that these workers were heavily involved in union organising efforts at the giant coffee chain.

Multiple unfair labour practice charges have been filed, the report mentioned. It also says that seven workers in Memphis and Tennessee were reinstated after a federal judge recently ordered. Reportedly, those workers were fired in February.

US media reported that those seven workers were fired following an in-store media interview about the store's organising. Starbucks Workers United claimed that this was all in retaliation for the union drive.

'Intense culture of fear': Starbucks reportedly fires workers involved in union efforts

A new coffee shop will soon be opening its doors in place of Starbucks. A rapid duo will soon open the 'Stars Coffee' shop in the Russian capital, Moscow.

In what comes as a victory for labour rights organisations and regulators, a US federal court on Thursday ordered Starbucks to reinstate its seven employees who were allegedly fired for unionising.

Judge Sheryl H. Lipman at the US District Court of the Western District of Tennesse passed the judgement, terming the rehiring as "just and proper".

The judge said that enough evidence was provided to establish that the firings were motivated by the anti-Union stance of the company. She also added that the multinational franchise chain had five days to bring back the fired employees.

We disagree with the ruling: Starbucks

Meanwhile, Starbucks, in its official statement stated it disagreed with the verdict and that it would appeal the court ruling.

“We strongly disagree with the judge's ruling. These individuals violated numerous policies and failed to maintain a secure work environment and safety standards." said Reggie Borges, a Starbucks spokesperson.

"Interest in a union does not exempt partners from following policies that are in place to protect partners, our customers and the communities we serve.” added the spokesperson.

Reportedly, the seven Starbucks baristas had attempted to unionise the Memphis branch of the company and were promptly fired.

However, to fend off the heat, Starbucks, in its official statement cited 'violation of the safety and security policies of the company as the reason for the termination.

US court orders Starbucks to rehire employees it fired for 'unionising'

Employees claim that over 75 workers have been fired in retaliation for union organising this year. All claims have been refuted by Starbucks.

Numerous Starbucks locations are presently awaiting the results of their election polls, but more than 200 locations across the US have already won their union votes.

Sam Amato worked for Starbucks in Buffalo, New York, for 13 years before he was fired on August 5 for his ardent support of unionisation at his store and other Starbucks stores across the country.

As the first Starbucks stores opened in the US and his own store won its union election in early 2022, he first got active in union organising efforts in the Buffalo region in August 2021.

Amato and his coworkers were sent to other locations in June while their own store underwent refurbishment.

Amato claimed that during this time, the store manager closely monitored employees through written warnings and disciplinary actions.

“My store manager pulled me aside and said that due to an incident when I closed the lobby I was being separated,” said Amato. “Any questions I asked, my manager said they were unable to answer and that I would have to call Starbucks corporate to get an answer.”

He explained that there had been a lot of store manager turnover throughout the union organising campaigns in the Buffalo region, along with numerous worker firings and resignations that led to understaffing concerns, which led to the lobby being closed down and operating only the drive-thru on July 3.

His dismissal surprised several coworkers and other union members, who immediately started an ongoing walkout at the Buffalo Starbucks branch to seek his reinstatement.

“I was fired because I’m a union leader and I was very vocal about it,” said Amato. “Starbucks pretends to be an ally and so progressive but they are the opposite and I genuinely have been shocked at how low they’re willing to go.”

Despite pleas from unionised workers to make these changes for them while they press for the firm to negotiate a first contract with the unionised locations, Starbucks has delayed the new pay rises and perks for these workers despite the wave of union elections at the corporation.

A unionised Starbucks location in Jacksonville, Florida, went on strike for one day on August 1 to demand that they be given the new pay raises and benefits on the same day they were made available throughout the firm.

“In the last week of July, I think people in my store were really starting to get really aggravated and pissed off that we weren’t receiving the raises,” said Mason Boykin, a Starbucks worker at the store.

Boykin claimed that when their store unionised, employees had their schedules altered and their hourly pay decreased, which they claim to be unfair labour practises.

“As far as striking goes, I think unionized stores recognize that the only way we’re going to receive what we’re worth is by uniting together and demanding it and that’s through striking,” added Boykin.

While one Boston Starbucks location has been on an indefinite strike since mid-July in protest of allegations of threats and retaliation against employees, several Starbucks locations in Massachusetts also staged a one-day strike over the wage and benefits issue, and two locations have kept up the strike.

As reported by the Guardian, a spokesperson for Starbucks said in an email: “We currently have strikes happening outside store locations in specific locations in the US. Starbucks has great partners and we value their contributions. We respect our partners’ right to engage in any legally protected activity or protest without retaliation.”

Popular American coffeehouse chain Starbucks has introduced masala chai and filter coffee to appeal to more Indian consumers, reported the Times of India. Masala chai and filter coffee are Indian varieties of tea and coffee beverages respectively. While masala chai is a tea beverage infused with spices and herbs, filter coffee is a creamy and frothy variant that has origins in South India.

As per TOI, the refreshed menu also includes assembled sandwiches, milkshakes, bite-sized snacks, and so forth. Starbucks will not be the first international food or beverage retail chain to go 'Indianisation'.

Starbucks will cease operations in Russia, shuttering its 130 cafes in the country. Starbucks said it will continue to pay its nearly 2,000 Russian employees for six months and help them transition to new jobs.

Starbucks leaving Russian market after 15 years, will close 130 stores

The association between Russia and McDonald’s has been an old one. The company opened their first store in Russia in 1990 when they opened their market to Western brands signaling a symbolic end to the Cold War. However, the fast-food giants will be leaving the country permanently as they are looking to sell all of their 850 outlets to local buyers. The company said that the decision was taken keeping in mind the "humanitarian crisis" and "unpredictable operating environment" in Ukraine.

McDonald’s faced a lot of criticism for not closing their shops in Russia following the invasion of Ukraine, but they temporarily stopped their operation in March. Currently, they are looking for local buyers and the existing shops do not have any McDonald's name or branding on them.

Although the stores are being sold, McDonald’s intends to take care of their 62,000 employers and they are trying to contact a Russian buyer to employ them till the end of the sale.

A man from the UK was handed a hefty fine for eating McDonald's meal at the parking zone of Starbucks.

Bob Spink, a 50-year-old diver, left fumed when he received a letter to his residence informing him about his 100 pounds (US $123) fine, despite not even leaving his car while having his meal, The Metro newspaper reported.

“We had only bought a £12 order from McDonald’s and the car park was entirely full, so we parked in Starbucks to eat as there was plenty of space,’ Spink was quoted as saying.

“It just feels like legalised theft, I haven’t done anything wrong legally.”

Bob visited McDonald's in Fabian Way with his girlfriend. When couldn’t find a parking space at the burger joint, they decided to stop at the nearby Starbucks parking lot to quickly finish up their meal.

“I was baffled by it, we have just moved here and it’s something you can’t ignore as it only gets worse and increases the fee,” he added.

The letter he received said that his fine can be reduced to £60 if he pays within 14 days.

I don't understand what they are trying to achieve and it doesn't look great for the chain to use parking enforcement with such tactics," he said.

According to Wales Online, the parking zone of the aforementioned Starbucks branch is handled by National Parking Enforcement Ltd (NPE).

Workers at Apple's Grand Central Station store announced Monday they are organizing to establish a union, in what would be a first at one of the tech giant's retail locations in the United States.

The effort, calling itself "Fruit Stand Workers United," aims to garner signatures from at least 30 per cent of the New York store, the minimum needed to qualify for a unionization election.

The campaign is connected to Workers United, an affiliate of the national Service Employees International Union, which was established in 2009 by several earlier unions.

Workers United confirmed its involvement.

"Like so many recent campaigns, this has been worker-driven, and worker led," Workers United said in an email. "We recognize the tremendous bravery and courage these workers have taken to stand up for their rights, and we will support them every step of the way."

By 2025, Starbucks looks to allow customers to use their own reusable cups at its facilities "for every visit". It will help phase out single-use cups.

In a press release, the coffee giant, while announcing the new goal, said, "By the end of next year, customers will be able to use their own personal reusable cup for every Starbucks visit in the US and Canada — including in cafe, drive-thru, and mobile order and pay."

Starbucks looks to promote use of reusable cups to phase out single-use ones

Longtime Starbucks chief Howard Schultz will return to the helm of the global coffee shop chain, the company announced Wednesday, serving as interim CEO while the company searches for a new leader amid a growing unionization drive.

Kevin Johnson, who has led the coffee giant since 2017, plans to retire next month, the company said, adding it expects to name a new CEO by the fall.

Schultz, 68, who first joined the company in 1982, grew Starbucks from a small Seattle coffee chain into a global juggernaut in two earlier stints as chief executive.

He also flirted with running for the US presidency in 2020, but ultimately opted against seeking office. His real-time wealth was valued at $4 billion on Wednesday, according to a Forbes list of the richest people in the world.

"When you love something, you have a deep sense of responsibility to help when called," Schultz said. "Although I did not plan to return to Starbucks, I know the company must transform once again to meet a new and exciting future where all of our stakeholders mutually flourish."

Shares of the coffee chain rocketed higher Wednesday, even as union leaders expressed misgivings about Schultz.

'Reputational risk'

With more than 34,000 stores worldwide, Starbucks reported a record $29.1 billion in annual revenues last year but has struggled of late to manage rising costs amid a tight labor market and supply chain problems.

Besides inflation, which is a headwind challenging companies throughout the economy, Starbucks is confronting a growing wave of unionization campaigns that has spread to more than 100 US stores after workers at two upstate New York cafes voted to form a union in December.

Johnson, 61, told the board a year ago that he was considering retiring in the wake of the upheaval of the pandemic, calling the decision "a natural bookend to my 13 years with the company," according to the company press release.

Starbucks said it had enlisted recruitment firm Russell Reynolds Associates in "continuous CEO succession planning" since 2021. Johnson plans to work as a consultant to the company through September.

The union movement poses challenges for the chain, which has been viewed as a worker-friendly company by many political progressives in the United States given its stance on gay marriage, race relations, the environment and other issues.

But Starbucks' tactics to discourage workers from unionization poses "reputational risk," shareholder activists argued in a letter sent to Johnson and Starbucks Chair Mellody Hobson ahead of the company's annual meeting later Wednesday.

Highlighting "alleged retaliatory termination and continued captive audience meetings," the shareholder group urged Starbucks to "publicly commit to a global policy of neutrality," said Trillium Asset Management, Parnassus Investments and other Starbucks shareholders who manage some $3.4 trillion in assets.

News of Schultz' return drew a cool response from Starbucks Workers United, which referred to the executive as a "leader in Starbucks' anti-union campaign," and urged him "to put union-busting behind him."

Ahead of the union vote, Schultz visited Buffalo in November to try to persuade workers against voting for the group.

In a letter to workers titled "From Buffalo with love," Schultz highlighted Starbucks' benefits for workers, including health care and free college tuition, saying he was "saddened and concerned" that workers felt outside representation was needed.

But staff at two Buffalo cafes voted with Starbucks Workers United on December 9. Since then, additional Buffalo-area shops have also voted with the group, along with a cafe in Mesa, Arizona, while employees at dozens more are working to form a union.

Equity analysts at investment firm Cowen said they were "a bit surprised" that Starbucks was searching for external CEO candidates, naming a number of high-ranking executives who could have taken over.

"We note a strong internal bench, but believe unionization publicity could be a factor pushing the company to look externally," Cowen said in a note.

Shares of Starbucks jumped 5.4 percent to $87.61 in afternoon trading.

Starbucks will raise menu prices this year and reduce some spending to offset soaring costs for labor and goods, as rising COVID-19 cases prompted the coffee chain to lower estimates for profits this year.

US coffee giant Starbucks caught serving food with expired ingredients in China

Workers in Starbucks store in Buffalo, New York City made history on Thursday by becoming Starbuck’s first unionised workplace.

New York City Starbucks employees vote for store union

Tasha Leverette was in the mood for her favorite drink from Starbucks, an iced peach green-tea lemonade.

When she went through the drive-thru of her usual Starbucks in Atlanta three weeks ago, though, she was told they couldn’t make the drink because they didn’t have any peach-flavored juice. Shrugging it off, she drove to another store. And another. And another.

Each stop brought disappointment. None of the locations had the integral ingredient.

“I said to them, ‘This is the Peach State, right?’” said Leverette, 33, who owns a public relations firm. “It’s surprising because Starbucks always seems like it has anything and everything you need.”

Across the country, customers and baristas are taking to social media to bemoan shortages not only of key ingredients for popular Starbucks drinks, like peach and guava juices, but also a lack of iced and cold-brew coffee, breakfast foods and cake pops, and even cups, lids and straws.

A video on TikTok this week featured what appeared to be a group of employees screaming in frustration over a list of ingredients the shop had run out of — including sweet cream, white mocha, mango dragon fruit and “every food item.” The caption also said that they were low on cold brew and the “will to live.”

Starbucks is hardly the only company struggling with supply issues. Earlier this spring, ketchup packets became hotter than GameStop stock. Automakers have slowed production because there are not enough computer chips for their vehicles. And homeowners are waiting weeks, if not months, for major kitchen appliances.

But Starbucks is running out of ingredients for Very Berry Hibiscus Refreshers and almond croissants after being one of the clear winners of the pandemic economy. During lockdowns, the coffee chain quickly shifted from its position as a “third place,” where people could linger to work or meet up for long chats, to focusing on frictionless transactions with customers ordering through mobile apps and drive-thrus. Earlier this year, company executives said Starbucks had seen a “full recovery” in U.S. sales, back to prepandemic levels.

In a statement, a spokeswoman for Starbucks said the company was experiencing “temporary supply shortages” of some of its products. She said the shortages varied by location, with some stores experiencing “outages of various items at the same time.” She added that the company was working with its vendors to restock the items as soon as possible, and that the supply-chain issues had not affected prices.

Although most people are familiar with the problems in the global supply chain to some extent, some Starbucks customers are still shocked — even incensed — by their inability to get their coffee exactly how they want it. Others laugh it off.

“I was told they couldn’t give me an extra shot of caramel because there was a national shortage,” Nicole Brashear, a 24-year-old pharmacy student at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, said of ordering an iced caramel macchiato with extra caramel drizzle in late May. “I just sort of laughed and was like, ‘Isn’t caramel just burnt sugar?’”

The problem for Starbucks is that it was never just selling a simple cup of coffee. For many, the experience of visiting the chain is a self-indulgent treat.

Customers learn the language regarding sizes and special drinks and then share their customized, 12-ingredient drink orders on social media. Many look forward to seasonal specials, like this summer’s Unicorn Cake Pop and Strawberry Funnel Cake Frappuccino, which are available for a limited time.

Orders are not barked out by number like other fast-food chains but rather are announced by name, suggesting customers are friends or are part of the Starbucks club, said Bryant Simon, a history professor at Temple University and author of “Everything But the Coffee: Learning About America From Starbucks.”

“Starbucks did something remarkable: taking a really ordinary product, coffee, and remaking it as an identifier of class, of culture, of discernment and of knowledge,” Simon said. “Starbucks is a way to communicate something about yourself to other people. While it has become more complicated over time, that drink still says, ‘I deserve a break in my life. I can afford to waste money on coffee.’”

There were earlier hints that supply issues could be bubbling up for Starbucks. In a late April call with Wall Street analysts, the chief executive of Starbucks, Kevin Johnson, voiced some concerns about companies that were part of its supply chain struggling to hire the staff they needed.

“I do anticipate we’ll do a little more to invest and help our supply chain partners, whether it’s staff that they need in manufacturing or staffing that they need for distribution and transportation,” Johnson said.

By late May, customers and baristas were reporting shortages of key ingredients or foods in stores all over the country.

Fred Rogers knew something was wrong right before Memorial Day weekend when he opened his Starbucks app and an alert flashed that the company was experiencing shortages of certain items. He wasn’t able to order his 3-year-old daughter her favorite sandwich — sausage, Cheddar and egg — from his nearby Starbucks in Burlington, New Jersey. His drink, a Caramel Ribbon Crunch Frappuccino, was also not available.

“I know if you go after a certain hour that they’re going to be out of some items,” said Rogers, a 33-year-old manufacturing specialist. “But this was 6:45 in the morning.”

Customers may be unhappy, but Simon said the paucity of drinks or food items would likely only increase demand. One of Starbucks’ biggest challenges in recent years has been overexpansion, meaning it has shed some of the uniqueness that once made it special.

“I’m sure there are a lot of heated conversations in Seattle right now about the supply-chain issues, but someone on the branding side is going to be chirping in that the scarcity may not be a bad thing,” Simon said.

Perhaps, but the issues could also be a risk if customers become too frustrated over not being able to get what they want, as they always have. When his daughter couldn’t get her favorite breakfast sandwich at Starbucks, Rogers took her to a nearby Chick-fil-A for breakfast.

And after driving to four Starbucks locations and not getting her favorite drink in late May, Leverette is no longer a regular customer.

“It’s disappointing,” she said. “You go, and you’re waiting in the drive-thru, and you’re only going for one thing and they don’t have what they need to make it.

“I just stopped even bothering to go.”

“I just sort of laughed and was like, ‘Isn’t caramel just burnt sugar?’” The problem for Starbucks is that it was never just selling a simple cup of coffee. Orders are not barked out by number like other fast-food chains but rather are announced by name, suggesting customers are friends or are part of the Starbucks club, said Bryant Simon, a history professor at Temple University and author of “Everything But the Coffee: Learning About America From Starbucks.” “Starbucks did something remarkable: taking a really ordinary product, coffee, and remaking it as an identifier of class, of culture, of discernment and of knowledge,” Simon said. “Starbucks is a way to communicate something about yourself to other people. While it has become more complicated over time, that drink still says, ‘I deserve a break in my life. I can afford to waste money on coffee.’” There were earlier hints that supply issues could be bubbling up for Starbucks. “But this was 6:45 in the morning.” Customers may be unhappy, but Simon said the paucity of drinks or food items would likely only increase demand.
