Badminton has witnessed an unprecedented rise in India with stars like PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal, Parupalli Kashyap, N Sikki Reddy among many others leaving their massive impact to the world of shuttle and racquet. And much credit for the rise and success of badminton stars in India has to go to Padma Bhushan awardee Pullela Gopichand.

While the Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad has done wonders for the rising and established stars in the world of badminton, the state-of-art academy continues its partnership with Tata Trusts’ badminton programme in the state of Mizoram as they look to unearth and polish new talent while also giving a platform for better players to continue taking giant strides to improve their game.

“When I first went to Mizoram, my thinking was that it won’t have passion for badminton. But what I saw there made me so happy because every community had a center with a badminton court. Players used to gather in evening to play and that bonding and passion which I saw within the players made me happy. There are around 840 players playing badminton regularly in grassroot community centers and after witnessing their talents, I am sure there will be many players from Mizoram who will go on to make it big,” Pullela Gopichand told WION in an exclusive interaction.

Sporting action came to a halt globally due to COVID-19 pandemic that forced many camps to shut down. As playing fields remained empty for months, awareness around the importance of fitness and immunity for health despite the social distancing, has only increased. The impact on children and young adults is especially greater as sports and gaming activities provide opportunities to engage and socialize and help with overall development of an individual in society. In order to stay connected and for aspirational athletes to continue their training, it is important to look at alternate methods during this forced break because of the pandemic.

“We were looking at video to connect to coaches and players but we weren’t sure when we would be able to go ahead with it. In this time of pandemic, that process was fastracked in this time and we were able to connect with coaches and players while monitoring the development and doing necessary changes in real time,” Gopichand said on the role of technology in this programme.

The Tata Trusts’ badminton programme on-going across 25 grassroots centres and covers all 8 districts of Mizoram state, is now providing students with online training to keep them engaged and in touch with the sport. In order to keep children in Mizoram excited about the sport, Tata Trusts has partnered with the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy. Gopichand and his team conduct one session every week, along with the coaches from the programme and an exercise and conditioning specialist conducting the remaining sessions. “

Tata Trusts were already working in Mizoram for different things and that’s when the Mizoram government approached us to do something on badminton. We don’t have any technical knowledge about badminton so to design a programme we got in touch with Pullela Gopichand. We invited him to see the talent in Mizoram and after witnessing it, he came on board as a technical partner. Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy is our technical partner. We designed the entire programme as to how to approach minute of details for this and Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy is taking care of skill training of not only players but giving tips to our coaches as well,” Neelam Babardesai - Head, Tata Trusts Sports Initiative told WION.

Currently the initiative is split into two: grassroots development and high performance. The selection of kids for the grassroots centers is simply based on interest and keenness towards learning the sport. The selection process for the high performance programme (Regional Development Centers) is strictly based on talent and performance. Prospective candidates' performance in State/district tournaments is taken into consideration and also their rankings as per the Mizoram Badminton Association. As of 2019-20, the initiative has had 1862 beneficiaries who are between 8 and 15 years.

“The grassroot plan is mainly focused on the basics of the game, like holding a racquet to players’ movement on the court. Whereas the high-performance plan is for bit polished players and we help them with their strength training and more advanced details of the sport,” Ponty Lalramtluangi, Coach at Regional Development Centers under Badminton Initiative Mizoram(BIM) told WION.

“For the competitive layer, players come down to our community centers for trials which are also attended by coaches from Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy and that is how the selection is made. For grassroot layer, it is more about looking at the keenness of a youngster and how passionate he or she is about the sport. We are already overloaded in the grassroot part of our training, which also shows the passion Mizoram as a state has for badminton,” Ponty added.

The infrastructure and facilities currently under use are multipurpose indoor community halls which also double up as Badminton courts. The programme is run in 40 such functional centers as of now. Tata Trusts has planned to construct a “Center of Excellence” close to the state capital for which the Mizoram Government has provided us with 10 acres (approx.) of land on lease for 50 years.

The Siphir community has given the land for the construction of the Centre of Excellence, free of cost, and the Mizoram Government will be preparing the site and developing the basic facilities for the same. Financial and operational independence is also an important goal for the programme, with the objective being to make the initiative self-sustaining through funds collected as fees from trainees and from resources generated by the training centre.

The mental strength of a player in any sport plays a massive role and the partnership between the Tata Trusts and Gopichand Badminton Academy is focusing to tick every box that is needed for a modern-day player to continue their development, on and off the court.

“We always wanted to focus on mental aspect of the game. Tata Trusts’ have always focused on the mental aspect of the game but moreover, with the kind of infrastructure we have in place and are looking to produce, I am sure we will give the players everything they need to improve. Be it improvement in mental strength, nutrition, game-plan or any other thing. And I am sure, we will be able to live up to the expectations we have with his programme,” Gopichand said.

“We are looking at the holistic development of children and not just development for the sake of it. There will be many players who will not make the cut to the national or international level but as we know, sport can help a person develop life skills as well, and that is what we are focusing on to providing lifetime skills,” Neelam concluded.

Pullela Gopichand: Mizoram has potential to produce future batch of badminton stars

In what comes as good news for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 fans, all Chennai Super Kings players, who were not in quarantine, have tested negative for COVID-19. CSK are now set to commence their practice session after completing their quarantine phase and will look forward to take to the field in the lucrative T20 tournament.

As per a report in TOI, CSK have been unofficially informed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that they will play the season opener against Mumbai Indians on September 19 with the schedule officially expected to be released on Friday.

After the news of 13 members including two players in the CSK contingent broke out, the BCCI delayed the announcement of IPL 2020 schedule. Speculation was rife that Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) could play Mumbai Indians (MI) in the season opener of 13th edition of IPL.

However, the board is happy with the latest round of results and how the virus hasn’t spread to other teammates. Now, they are planning to release the schedule with CSK vs MI as opener.

"It's not a problem at all. We will be happy to play game 1 if we are asked to," a CSK source told TOI.

However, CSK will be without Deepak Chahar and Ruturaj Gaikwad while Suresh Raina have opted out of IPL 2020. Even Harbhajan Singh is likely to pull out of the tournament. Without much training, it will be a massive challenge for CSK to hit the ground running when IPL starts.

Lewis Hamilton will seek to break more records and a few hearts this weekend when he bids to win the Italian Grand Prix for Mercedes while Ferrari, without the 'tifosi' in attendance, hope only to avoid embarrassment at their traditional home event.

Championship leader and six-time world champion Hamilton has won five of this year's seven races and is now within two triumphs of seven-time champion Michael Schumacher's career total of 91 wins as he demolishes the German's statistical grip on Formula One's peaks.

This weekend, he will be favourite to claim his sixth victory in the old royal park, moving him one clear of the record five he now shares with Schumacher – and leaving him on 90 wins overall ahead of the Tuscany Grand Prix a week later, an event organised to celebrate Ferrari's 1,000th F1 race.

After their dismal and pointless performance at last Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix, it is a nightmare scenario.

Ferrari travelled back to Italy warning absent fans not to expect miracles.

Many believe Ferrari could be heading towards the team's worst-ever Monza performance in 70 years.

The 'scarlet scuderia' has won 19 of the 69 races to date, but will – if they repeat their Belgian showing – register a new first by failing to qualify a car in the top ten on the grid and in the race.

Monza is famous as the "temple of speed", a track where outright power and straight line speed are usually decisive.

"It is a circuit that is high power-sensitive," said Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto.

"So it may change the balance of competitiveness in qualifying and we all know how important it is to start ahead on the grid."

In the circumstances, departing four-time champion Sebastian Vettel has said it is "probably better" that there will be no fans at the behind-closed-doors event, his last race in red at Monza.

"Don't get me wrong, it will be sad not to have the fans in Monza – it is the first time," he said.

"For me, it would be so difficult to race in front of the Ferrari fans knowing it's my last time in red. So, in that regard, perhaps it is a little better this way."

Given his excellence this year, Hamilton will be expected to rule again, but he may face a serious challenge from Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas, as well as a threat from Red Bull's Max Verstappen, the only other drivers to have won this season.

Bottas this week revealed that Hamilton has raised his game in qualifying this year to a level that he is struggling to match.

"Lewis has been really consistent, not making any mistakes in qualifying," said the Finn.

Hamilton has five wins from pole already in 2020 while his fastest lap last Saturday at Spa-Francorchamps prompted Mercedes team chief Toto Wolff to suggest he was "extra terrestrial".

"This year, I have had to make a couple of adjustments and with this car it seems to work quite well," said Hamilton.

"So now I am back to being able to produce qualifying laps that I was able to do before last year and on a more consistent basis."

Luka Modric blows out his cheeks. "It would be a huge loss," he says. "Like when Cristiano left. But you can't think about the past. It's football and that's it."

Modric has faced Lionel Messi 21 times and is the only player since 2008 other than Cristiano Ronaldo to beat him to the Ballon d'Or. He knows what it would mean if he leaves.

"If it happens it will be a huge loss for the prestige of the league," he tells AFP. "But we need to go forward. Other players will become stars.

"When Ronaldo left, the same thing happened, the life of Real Madrid went on without him and it will be the same for Barcelona and La Liga without Messi."

After Ronaldo, Real Madrid needed two sacked coaches and the return of the old one to get back on their feet, a recovery still not complete as shown by a second consecutive exit in the Champions League last 16.

Messi's departure, even his unhappiness, would give Madrid an opening, not only to win La Liga again but to establish their own period of supremacy in Spain.

The first step is defending the title they won in July.

"We don't have a young team but we have an experienced team," says Modric. "We have young players, who will get better. I don't know if we will buy players but even if it stays like this, we have enough quality.

"We showed it in La Liga and we know we can do it again. After the suspension, we came back so motivated. We missed football, we missed winning games.

"We had worked so hard, I think physically we were the best team in the league and that's why we won it. It was my second La Liga title and I want to win more."

- Dressing room leader -

Modric was arguably Real Madrid's best player during the 11-game run-in, perhaps benefitting more than anyone from the three-month pause, after a period when he found himself rotated.

"I had two injuries that set me back and then other players took their opportunity," Modric says. "It wasn't easy for me, but maybe now Zizou sees it differently because I never gave up and in the end I was playing again. I feel well now, I feel fit, I feel motivated."

He turns 35 next week but Modric still feels instrumental to this Real Madrid, his calm masking an inner-steel that is well-suited to Zidane and perhaps symbolic of the team as a whole.

In his autobiography, 'My Game', released last month, Modric said Zidane urged him to be more of a leader and he has been supporting Eden Hazard during the Belgian's injury-ravaged opening year.

"Eden is a great guy and a special player," says Modric. "But he was playing with pain and when you're on the pitch, people always expect the best. They don't care if you have little problems.

"I spoke to him and said, 'Eden maybe you need not to play now and recover because next season we need you at your best. This is a season where you're getting to know everything but next season you need to be 100 per cent because if not, it's going to be difficult'.

"Hopefully he comes back without any problems and then I'm sure he'll show his potential and why the club bought him because we will need him a lot."

- Zidane 'one of the best' -

Hazard retains the confidence of Zidane but the same cannot be said for Gareth Bale, whose prospects look bleaker than ever if he stays.

Modric has spent 12 years playing with Bale, four at Tottenham and eight with Madrid, and he is one of those closest to the Welshman in the dressing room.

"Gareth is a great, great player," Modric says. "But his situation is not easy. He always has my support but he needs to decide what is best for him and what he wants to do now with his career.

"It was not an easy season for him but it is what it is. Maybe now he needs to get back to his best. Maybe to fight or... We'll see what happens with him."

Unlike Bale, Modric trusts Zidane absolutely, dismissing those who claim he is a motivator graced with good luck.

"He just perfectly understands players," Modric says. "He is one of the best coaches, definitely.

"What we have achieved is unimaginable and still people say it's because of luck or this or that, and they don't give him the recognition he deserves -- but he doesn't need it. His results speak for themselves."

Modric recalls one of his first meetings with Zidane in 2016, which he cites as a turning point in his career.

"I remember it word for word," says Modric. "He said, 'I see you as a player who can one day win the Ballon d'Or'. I'd never even thought about the Ballon d'Or before but when someone like Zizou tells you that, you feel so much confidence.

"It's why we've always had such a great relationship and I hope he stays at Madrid for a long, long time."

Luka Modric's autobiography, 'My Game', was released on August 20 in the UK, France and Spain.

"Hopefully he comes back without any problems and then I'm sure he'll show his potential and why the club bought him because we will need him a lot." - Zidane 'one of the best' - Hazard retains the confidence of Zidane but the same cannot be said for Gareth Bale, whose prospects look bleaker than ever if he stays. We'll see what happens with him." Unlike Bale, Modric trusts Zidane absolutely, dismissing those who claim he is a motivator graced with good luck. "He just perfectly understands players," Modric says. "He is one of the best coaches, definitely. "What we have achieved is unimaginable and still people say it's because of luck or this or that, and they don't give him the recognition he deserves -- but he doesn't need it. His results speak for themselves." Modric recalls one of his first meetings with Zidane in 2016, which he cites as a turning point in his career. "I remember it word for word," says Modric. "He said, 'I see you as a player who can one day win the Ballon d'Or'. I'd never even thought about the Ballon d'Or before but when someone like Zizou tells you that, you feel so much confidence. "It's why we've always had such a great relationship and I hope he stays at Madrid for a long, long time." Luka Modric's autobiography, 'My Game', was released on August 20 in the UK, France and Spain.

Modric: Messi leaving would be a huge blow to La Liga's prestige

Naomi Osaka sailed into the third round of the US Open on Wednesday, demolishing Italy's Camila Giorgi in straight sets.

Japanese fourth seed Osaka needed only 1hr 9min to swat aside Giorgi, the world number 74, winning 6-1, 6-2.

Osaka, the 2018 US Open champion, will now play Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine in the last 32 on Friday.

Osaka said she had set out to dominate her hard-hitting Italian opponent from out outset.

"I never want to depend on what the other person's going to do," Osaka said.

"Even if I play a power player, for me, my goal is to be the dictator. I think that I was able to do that quite well. I think when she was hitting really hard, I was able to neutralize. When I had the chance, I went for the ball that I wanted.

"I definitely played I think the best out of the two weeks that I've been here today."

The 22-year-old Osaka had entered the tournament with concerns over her fitness after withdrawing from the final of the Western & Southern Open last week.

Her weary body was given a thorough test in her first round match on Monday, when compatriot Misaki Doi took her to three sets.

However there was no sign of fatigue from Osaka on Wednesday as she romped to victory with tightly disciplined display.

In all, Osaka finished with 14 winners and only 11 unforced errors in the win.

Her powerful service game also looked in good order, with Osaka winning 79% of points on her first serve.

Osaka entered the Arthur Ashe Stadium wearing a facemask emblazoned with the name of Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old African-American man who died in police custody last year after being placed in a chokehold and injected with a sedative.

"For me, I think when I heard about his story it was very hurtful," Osaka said of McClain. "I mean, they're all very hurtful, but just the fact of the character and the way that he was, just to hear stories about him, for me it was very sad. Today was very special in the way that I wanted to represent him very well."

Osaka, an activist against racism and police brutality, says she plans to wear different masks honoring victims of social injustice throughout the tournament.

Osaka sails into third round as Giorgi beaten

Novak Djokovic overcame an early scare to move into the third round of the US Open Wednesday but top women's seed Karolina Pliskova crashed out in the tournament's first shock.

Djokovic extended an undefeated run in 2020 to 25 matches as Pliskova was stunned in straight sets by France's Caroline Garcia, the world number 50.

World number one Djokovic dropped the first against Britain's Kyle Edmund but rallied to progress 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 inside a subdued, spectator-free Arthur Ashe Stadium at Flushing Meadows.

"I'm really glad having an early kind of tough match because it kind of serves me better I think for the rest of the tournament," said Djokovic.

The Serbian superstar is looking to close the gap on Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, both absent from Flushing Meadows, in the race for the all-time men's Slam singles title record.

The 33-year-old -- who won an eighth Australian Open title in February -- is on 17, with Nadal on 19 and Federer on 20.

Pliskova -- the 28-year-old world number three from the Czech Republic -- suffered a miserable 1-6, 6-7 exit to a confident Garcia who rushed to a 5-0 lead in the first set.

Pliskova said her defeat was nothing to do with being elevated to the top of the draw after a host of high-ranking withdrawals over coronavirus fears.

"No, zero pressure from this for me. This is nothing to do with my loss today," she sniffed.

Elsewhere in the men's draw Wednesday, fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece defeated American Maxime Cressy 7-6 (7/2), 6-3, 6-4 in his first runout on the famous Ashe court.

"It would have been even better with fans but getting a first taste of what it is was great for me," he said.

Earlier fifth seed Alexander Zverev defeated American wildcard Brandon Nakashima in a far from smooth 7-5, 6-7 (8/10), 6-3, 6-1 win.

The world number seven traded 24 aces with 10 double faults against a player ranked 223 inside an empty but and humid Louis Armstrong Stadium to move into round three.

"I was sweating through my shoes, which is unusual," said Zverev, explaining a footwear change during the match. "I needed to go from the dry tires to the wet tires a little bit."

Belgian seventh seed David Goffin also progressed as the top seeds continue to dominate at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

- Empty tank -

In the women's draw, 2018 champion Naomi Osaka sailed into the third round, dismantling Italy's Camila Giorgi 6-1, 6-2 in just 1hr 9min.

Sixth seed Petra Kvitova vanquished Kateryna Kozlova of Ukraine 7-6 (7/3), 6-2 while Germany's Angelique Kerber beat compatriot Anna-Lena Friedsam in straight sets.

The 17th seed won 6-3, 7-6 (8/6) in one hour 40 minutes inside Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Also in the women's event, unseeded Russian Varvara Gracheva dumped out French 30th seed Kristina Mladenovic 1-6, 7-6 (7/2), 6-0.

Mladenovic's exit came after a remarkable collapse. The Frenchwoman led 6-1, 5-1 and failed to convert four match points as Gracheva came roaring back to win.

"I just collapsed," a gloomy Mladenovic said afterwards. "I had nothing left in the tank."

The US Open is taking place in a spectator-free bubble, resulting in a staid atmosphere in contrast with the usual frenetic energy that pervades the grounds of the tennis center during Open week.

Game-winning points are being met with the odd clap from coaches and admiring glances from rival players watching from their own personal suites in Arthur Ashes.

Crowd noise is piped-in between sets while images of spectators cheering from their sofas at home are shown on "fan cams" around the Arthur Ashe court.

The Premier League terminated a lucrative broadcasting contract with its licensee in China on Thursday, dealing a further blow to the English top-flight as clubs adjust to heavy losses as a result of the coronavirus.

Streaming service PPTV agreed a reported $700 million (£524 million) deal for the right to broadcast all 380 Premier League matches per season from 2019 to 2022.

However, the first season of that deal was hit by the coronavirus pandemic with a three-month shutdown between March and June before the season was completed behind closed doors.

PPTV reportedly failed to make a £160 million payment due in March for coverage of the 2019/20 season.

"The Premier League confirms that it has today terminated its agreements for Premier League coverage in China with its licensee in that territory," the Premier League said in a statement.

"The Premier League will not be commenting further on the matter at this stage."

The English top-flight is already facing huge losses due to coronavirus.

The new season is set to start on September 12 in empty stadiums, while domestic and international broadcasters were due rebates because of the disruption to the 2019/20 season.

PP said in a statement that after many rounds of talks disagreements remained on the value of the rights.

"Regrettably, we have not reached an agreement with the Premier League," it said.

"Despite PP paying more than the copyright cycle fee to Premier League in advance, as agreed, PP will terminate its cooperation with the Premier League."

It remains to be seen whether the Premier League will be able to negotiate a new rights deal in China on similar terms due to challenging economic and political conditions.

Last season was marked by political tensions between Britain and China.

In December, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV pulled a game between Arsenal and Manchester City from its programme after Gunners midfielder Mesut Ozil expressed support for mainly Muslim Uighurs in Xinjiang.

Relations between the two countries have also soured as the British government has ordered the phased removal of Chinese telecoms giant Huawei from its 5G network.

It also offered citizenship to millions of Hong Kong nationals in response to a sweeping new security law that Beijing has imposed on the former British colony

Lionel Messi’s father Jorge on Thursday confirmed that there is a possibility that the six-time Ballon d’Or winner will continue his career in Barcelona. A lot has been said and written about Messi’s future since he sent a burofax to Barca asking them to allow him to leave this summer, as per a clause in his contract. However, Barcelona remained firm in their stance and worked out a meeting with Messi’s father where they may have come to a conclusion that it is better for Messi to stay at Nou Camp for another year.

As per Deportes Cuatro, Messi’s father Jorge answered “yes” when he was asked whether there is a possibility that the left-footed maestro will continue his contract with Barcelona. When asked how did the meeting go with club president Josep Bartomeu, Jorge Messi answered “very well”, hinting that their stance to leave the club may have softened up a bit over the days.

Messi’s father Jorge arrived in Barcelona on Thursday where he had lunch in an Italian restaurant before meeting Bartomeu. While the first meeting ended in a stalemate, the second meeting seems to have come to a conclusion.

Meanwhile, Messi has been strongly linked with Manchester City and a re-union with former Barca manager Pep Guardiola was on cards. However, with Jorge hinting that Messi could end up staying for another season at Barcelona, there might be some disappointment in the City camp.

The likes of Luka Modric and Sergio Ramos from Barcelona’s rival club Real Madrid have also said that Messi leaving the league will be a huge blow to La Liga and the intensity which the Argentine brings into the El Clasicos.

However, an official verdict is still pending from Messi and Barcelona after the former skipped the PCR tests and eventually Ronald Koeman’s first training session for the club.

Four umpires from the ICC's Elite Panel are set to officiate in the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), starting in the UAE from September 19.

Speaking to ANI, sources in the know of developments said that a total of 16 umpires are set to officiate in this edition of the cash-rich league and that will include four umpires from ICC's Elite Panel. Chris Gaffaney (New Zealand), Richard Ellingworth (England), Paul Reifel (Australia) and Nitin Menon (India) are the ones from the ICC's Elite Panel and the rest will be those in BCCI's own panel."There

are four from ICC's Elite Panel who have been selected to officiate in the tournament. The rest are Indian umpires. We are looking to bring in the umpires in the UAE around September 10," the sources said.

The IPL 2020 is slated to be played from September 19 to November 10 in the UAE across three venues -- Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah. The final match of the 2020 edition is scheduled to be played on a weekday, i.e. Tuesday, for the first time in the history of the T20 tournament. This time, both the afternoon and evening matches will be played half-an-hour earlier than usual.

As per the Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs) for IPL 2020, players and match officials have been advised to go back to their hotel and take a shower after match days as a precautionary measure against the coronavirus. All the eight teams have also been asked to use an electronic team sheet rather than carrying hard copies of their playing XI list during toss on match days.

The IPL 2020 won't also feature any toss mascot this year and as reported by ANI earlier, players and officials will have to wear Bluetooth-enabled badges to help in contact tracing. The badge can be opened inside the designated hotel rooms of the players and officials as well as on the field of play.

IPL 2020: Four ICC Elite Panel umpires to officiate in league

With the second edition of the UEFA Nations League starting on Thursday, AFP Sport picks out some potential highlights as international football returns after 10 months in hibernation:

- Germany v Spain -

Two recent world champions meet in Stuttgart in their first competitive encounter since the 2010 World Cup semi-final in Durban, which Spain won 1-0 before going on to lift the trophy.

A decade on and there are few traces left in either squad. Toni Kroos is the only remaining German, while Sergio Ramos, Sergio Busquets and Jesus Navas are the only survivors in what is, remarkably, Luis Enrique's first Spain squad of his second spell in charge, despite being re-appointed in November last year.

Seventeen-year-old Ansu Fati of Barcelona is in the Spanish squad, as is Bayern Munich's Thiago Alcantara, while Germany will be weakened by the absence of most of their Bayern stars, rested by coach Joachim Loew after their recent Champions League exertions.

However, winger Leroy Sane -- Bayern's summer signing from Manchester City -- is included, and others to look out for are Chelsea new boy Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, who could be set to move to the London club too from Bayer Leverkusen.

- Bale in Wales squad -

Gareth Bale hardly featured for Real Madrid in their title run-in in La Liga after football restarted in Spain in June and July.

His club future remains extremely uncertain, but Wales coach Ryan Giggs named the 31-year-old in his squad to play Finland and Bulgaria.

"He always turns up to camp fit and raring to go," Giggs said of Bale after naming his squad.

Bale scored twice for Wales in their successful qualifying campaign for Euro 2020.

- Netherlands without Koeman -

The Netherlands, who reached the final of the inaugural Nations League before losing to Portugal, will be in action for the first time since the departure of coach Ronald Koeman when they host Poland in Amsterdam on Friday.

Koeman took over in early 2018 and helped revive the fortunes of a team who failed to qualify for Euro 2016 or the 2018 World Cup.

As well as leading the 'Oranje' to the Nations League final with notable wins over France, Germany and England, he helped them qualify for Euro 2020.

But Koeman has now taken over at Barcelona leaving Dwight Lodeweges to take interim charge of the team -- starring Virgil van Dijk and Frenkie de Jong -- who also play Italy at home next Monday.

- New-look England -

Gareth Southgate's England go to Iceland and Denmark for their first games since rounding out Euro 2020 qualifying with a 4-0 win in Kosovo last November, and the matches could see several new faces feature.

While Harry Maguire was withdrawn from the squad after his court case in Greece, and his Manchester United team-mate Marcus Rashford pulled out injured, their club colleague Mason Greenwood is one of a handful of players called up for the first time.

Aston Villa's Jack Grealish, Phil Foden of Manchester City, Leeds United's Kalvin Phillips, Wolverhampton Wanderers centre-back Conor Coady and Arsenal full-back Ainsley Maitland-Niles are all targeting first caps.

There was also a place in the squad for prolific Southampton striker Danny Ings, who made his only previous England appearance in 2015.

- France v Croatia -

France host Croatia next Tuesday in a re-run of the 2018 World Cup final, but plenty has changed since that game in Moscow, which Les Bleus won 4-2.

For starters, Croatia come without Luka Modric or Ivan Rakitic, while Mario Mandzukic has since retired from international football.

Meanwhile Paul Pogba, one of France's goal-scorers in Moscow, is a high-profile absentee after testing positive for coronavirus.

So this could be the big chance for arguably the most exciting teenager in Europe to make his debut.

Eduardo Camavinga of Rennes, still just 17, is the youngest player called up to the full France squad since World War II.

"We will have to manage him in the right way because he is young and this call-up has come around fast," said France coach Didier Deschamps, whose team also play in Sweden on Saturday.

"But the fact he is in the squad means he is supposed to be able to play just like anyone else."

World number one Novak Djokovic takes on Britain's Kyle Edmund on Wednesday for a place in the third round of the behind-closed-doors US Open in New York.

The Serbian will go up against the unseeded Brit before an empty Arthur Ashe Stadium on day three at Flushing Meadows.

Djokovic is chasing an 18th Grand Slam title at the Billie Jean US National Tennis Center.

He is looking to close the gap on Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, both absent from the tournament, in the race for the all-time men's Slam singles title record.

Djokovic is on 17, with Nadal on 19 and Federer on 20.

"I had some really good matches against him in the past, Wimbledon, tough four-setter a few years ago," Djokovic said of Edmund following his straight-sets first-round win on Monday.

"He doesn't feel so much pressure I think playing on the big court. He actually likes the challenge. I have a lot of respect for him.

"He's a really hard worker, puts a lot of hours on and off the court into perfecting his game," Djokovic added.

Also Wednesday, the number one women's seed Karolina Pliskova does battle with France's Caroline Garcia.

Pliskova was propelled to the top of the draw by the decisions of world number one Ashleigh Barty and the second-ranked Simona Halep to skip the event because of coronavirus fears.

The US Open is taking place in a spectator-free bubble, resulting in a staid atmosphere in contrast with the usual frenetic energy that pervades the grounds of the tennis center during Open week.

Also Wednesday, Naomi Osaka, two-time Grad Slam winner and now passionate advocate for racial justice in America, returns to the court for a second-round matchup against Italy's lowly-ranked Camila Giorgi.

In the men's competition, fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas plays US wild card Maxime Cressy for a spot in the third round.

Top seeds Djokovic, Pliskova headline US Open day three

Sumit Nagal, who became the first Indian to win a singles match at the U.S. Open in seven years when he beat Bradley Klahn on Tuesday, is counting on his underdog status to give him a mental edge against his next opponent, second seed Dominic Thiem.

Somdev Devvarman was the last Indian to get past the first round at Flushing Meadows in 2013 until Nagal beat American Klahn 6-1 6-3 3-6 6-1 to advance in New York.

Nagal, who took a set off Roger Federer during a first round defeat on his Grand Slam debut at Flushing Meadows last year, said he was excited by the prospect of locking horns with Australian Open finalist Thiem in Thursday’s second round.

“I’ve got nothing to lose,” the 23-year-old told reporters. “Last year I played Roger Federer and this year Thiem. It’s going to be a great match. For sure, I’m not the favourite.”

Nagal believes the shortage of matches for both players due to the COVID-19 pandemic could help level the playing field against the Austrian world number three.

“I don’t think we’ve had enough match practice on hard courts,” added Nagal, who is ranked 124th. “It’s going to be the same for both of us for the match on Thursday.”

With player movements being restricted due to safety protocols put in place by U.S. Open organisers, Nagal’s plans to get a bit of sightseeing done have taken a hit, and he will spend his down time playing video games instead.

“I’m a guy who likes to stay in as much as possible but... you do feel it a bit,” he said. “I wish I could go out and see the buildings, walk on the streets of New York.

“I’ll be on my normal routine... Probably play a game or two on my computer.”

For sure, I’m not the favourite.” Nagal believes the shortage of matches for both players due to the COVID-19 pandemic could help level the playing field against the Austrian world number three. “I don’t think we’ve had enough match practice on hard courts,” added Nagal, who is ranked 124th. “It’s going to be the same for both of us for the match on Thursday.” With player movements being restricted due to safety protocols put in place by U.S.

Pakistan beat England by five runs to win the third Twenty20 international at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Victory saw Pakistan square the three-match series at 1-1 after Friday's no result washout was followed by England's five-wicket win on Sunday.

England, set 191 to win, slumped to 69-4 before Moeen Ali's 61 revived their hopes of victory.

But when veteran paceman Wahab Riaz caught and bowled Moeen, England were 174-8 with seven balls left.

They got the target down to 12 off two balls when Tom Curran hit a six. Bu with six needed off one ball, Curran could not repeat the shot when Haris Rauf bowled a yorker with the last ball of the match.

Earlier, Pakistan veteran Mohammad Hafeez made 86 not out and shared a stand of exactly 100 with teenager Haider Ali, who marked his international debut with an impressive 54.

Ex-England all-rounder David Capel has died aged 57 following a long illness, his former county Northamptonshire announced on Wednesday.

Capel, who played 15 Tests and 23 one-day internationals between 1987 and 1990, was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2018.

The club said on their Twitter account: "It is with incredibly heavy hearts that we announce the death of former Northamptonshire and England great David Capel at the age of 57."

Capel, who was one of a number of all-rounders burdened with the tag of being the "new Ian Botham", made his Test debut against Pakistan in 1987, scoring a half-century.

He was also part of the England team that produced a huge shock by beating the powerful West Indies in Jamaica in 1990.

Capel scored 374 Test runs at an average of 15.58, with a highest score of 98 against Pakistan in Karachi in 1987, and took 21 wickets at 50.66 with his medium pace.

Former England and Northants teammate Allan Lamb tweeted: "Very sad to hear my former teammate passed from a long-suffering illness .

"David Capel allround person and a true gentlemen both on and off the field we are going to miss you buddy. RIP and condolences to your family."

He represented Northamptonshire for his whole playing career between 1981 and 1998. Subsequently, he ran the academy and in 2006 was appointed as head coach.

A three-decade association with the club came to an end in 2012, after which he had a stint as assistant coach of the England women's team.

England and Wales chief executive officer Tom Harrison said: "This is hugely shocking and sad news for the English cricket family and particularly those connected with Northants CCC.

"David was one of the finest all-rounders of his era and spent an astonishing 33 years at Wantage Road."

Bayern Munich formally bid farewell to Brazil playmaker Philippe Coutinho on Wednesday after his year-long loan deal from Barcelona expired with the newly-crowned European champions declining, as expected, to sign him permanently.

"With his creativity and excellent technique, he livened up our game in this triple-winning season," said Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who made it clear last month they would not bring Coutinho to Munich permanently.

The 28-year-old rebooted his career in Bavaria after a frustrating period in Barcelona following his high-profile transfer from Liverpool in 2018.

Coutinho netted 11 goals, creating nine more, in 38 games for Bayern, including scoring twice in the 8-2 mauling the Germans handed his club Barcelona in the jaw-dropping Champions League quarter-final.

He also came on as a second-half replacement in Bayern's 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the Lisbon final.

Coutinho struggled to make the starting side in Munich once Bayern head coach Hansi Flick replaced Niko Kovac last November, preferring Thomas Mueller in the attacking midfield role at the Brazilian's expense.

Having paid 8.5 million euros ($10 million) to have Coutinho on loan, Bayern opted not to use the buy option of 120 million euros.

"Making any further investments of this magnitude in these difficult economic times... are also difficult for us," Rummenigge said in mid-August.

However, Coutinho seems to have a future in Barcelona. New head coach Ronald Koeman reportedly phoned him on Monday to assure the Brazilian he is part of his planning for the coming season.

Australia are all set to lock horns in a limited-overs series consisting of three T20Is and as many ODIs starting from September 4. While England have already played both red-ball and white-ball series, Australia will take to field after break of almost six months. Ahead of the much-awaited T20I series, Australian coach Justin Langer said that the visitors are ready to take on an in-form England outfit.

Australia have already played two intra-squad warm-up matches in Southampton with Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey smashing quickfire centuries in the second match.

“England are dangerous. I watched the way Eoin Morgan plays. It’s exciting to watch, he comes out and smacks it from ball one,” Langer told a news conference on Wednesday.

“They have got some good young players, and they’ve brought in some of their more experienced players. We know they have been the best one day team in the world for a few years now.

“We came here two years ago and got smashed 5-0 and came here last year and won two of the three but didn’t win the big one in the (World Cup) semi-final. We know what to expect and we will be ready for it.”

Langer was full of praise for Labuschagne as he watched the youngster smoke Pat Cummins all over the park while terming Aaron Finch and David Warner as best opening pair in limited-overs cricket.

“Labuschagne’s innings was absolutely sublime; it was brilliant to watch. He was hitting Pat Cummins, the world’s best, over point for six,” Langer said.

Venus Williams bowed out of the US Open in the first round for the first time in her professional career on Tuesday, losing in straight sets to Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic.

The 40-year-old Williams, making her 22nd appearance at Flushing Meadows in a career that has spanned four decades, was beaten 6-3, 7-5.

It marked Williams' second consecutive first round defeat at a Grand Slam event after exiting the Australian Open at the same stage in January.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion has not been past the third round at a Slam event since 2017.

Muchova -- who was only one when Williams was playing in her first US Open final in 1997, where she lost to Martina Hingis -- always had the veteran American star on the back foot on Tuesday.

After losing the first set, Williams rallied in the second and opened up a 5-3 lead, seemingly poised to force a third set.

Serena Williams took her first step toward a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam title on Tuesday (September 1), defeating Kristie Ahn 7-5 6-3 in the first round of the U.S. Open.

Williams got off to a slow start, showing signs of nervousness early in the first set, but kicked her game into high gear in the second, firing off 13 aces and 28 winners during the match and harnessing her powerful return to keep her opponent on the run.

A final serve forced Ahn into an error, as Williams claimed a record 102nd U.S. Open match victory, as she scored her first straight-sets win since the sport was put on a coronavirus hiatus.

Williams, who reached the final of the U.S. Open in her last two campaigns, is gunning for her first Grand Slam title since 2017 to equal Margaret Court's record in a depleted field in which six of the top 10 players are not competing this year.

She next faces Margarita Gasparyan of Russia in the second round.

Williams' U.S. compatriot Madison Keys needed just 55 minutes to beat Timea Babos 6-1 6-1 to advance in her opening match as the 2017 finalist looks to claim her elusive first Grand Slam title.

The hard-hitting American won 92% of her first serve points and never faced a break point while playing smothering defense against the overmatched Hungarian.

The 25-year-old Keys, who drew comparisons to 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams when she joined the tour in 2009, has been consistently ranked in the top 25 and won five titles.

But the lack of a Grand Slam title has cast a shadow over her career.

She fell to fellow American and friend Sloane Stephens in the final at Flushing Meadows three years ago, her closest brush with Grand Slam glory.

This year's depleted field could open the door for the seventh seeded Keys, who will face either Jil Teichmann of Switzerland or Aliona Bolsova of Spain in the second round.

Pattinson, who is held in high regards, especially in the red-ball circuit, will now have the opportunity to prove his worth in IPL 2020. Mumbai Indians owner Akash Ambani welcomed James on board and extended all support to Malinga as he said: “James is the right fit for us and adds to our pace attack options available at hand especially for the conditions we will play in this season. There is massive anticipation surrounding the meeting between Jorge and Bartomeu as fans expect to see a clearer picture of what future holds for Messi.

The second question was asked to Jorge whether he sees Messi staying in the Nou Camp to which he answered “difficult” while refusing the claims that he has already held talks with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.

Jorge and Bartomeu are set for showdown talks on Wednesday afternoon in relation to Messi’s future. As per reports, Messi wants to leave his lifelong club and hasn’t changed his mind despite not showing up for PCR tests conducted by the Catalan club while missing out on the first training session under new manager Ronald Koeman.

Messi, last week, had sent a buro-fax to Barcelona asking them to allow him to leave for free, as per an existing clause in his contract. However, Barcelona refuse to listen to Messi and are firm that the EUR 700 million release clause is still active and if the Argentine maestro has to leave the club then the full amount needs to be paid.

Even La Liga jumped in between and issued a statement agreeing to Barcelona’s stance as the Spanish league said that the full release clause needs to be paid by any other team if they want to acquire Messi’s services.

While Jorge and Messi’s entourage are hopeful of getting into a mutual agreement, Bartomeu wants Messi to stay and sign an extension with the club.

A catastrophic top-order display saw the Barbados Tridents capitulate to 92 all out in the face of an impressive bowling and fielding performance from the Guyana Amazon Warriors, who eased home with 20 balls to spare to pick up their fourth win of the season and go clear in third place on the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2020 table.

The Tridents shuffled their batting order, Justin Greaves coming into the XI to open, but he lasted only one ball as he fell LBW trying to sweep Amazon Warriors captain Chris Green. Johnson Charles fell to a magnificent catch by Shimron Hetmyer who sprinted 25 yards and dived full length, sending the bowler Kevin Sinclair into another athletic celebration.

Jason Holder had only himself to blame for being run out by T20 debutant Kissoondath Magram, meaning the openers and captain had all fallen for 0. Shai Hope was shifted down to five but fell for another low score, chipping a catch back to Sinclair.

The Tridents, who had won the toss and chosen to bat, were 9/4 in the fourth over, and added just five more runs before the end of the Powerplay - the second lowest-scoring in CPL history. Green bowled out with another maiden, Sinclair’s last over went for just three, and the Tridents were 17/4 after eight overs.

More poor calling saw the fifth wicket fall, as Jonathan Carter set off, was sent back by Kyle Mayers and was caught short of his ground by yards. Mayers followed Carter back to the dugout two balls later top-edging a pull, keeper Nicholas Pooran taking a brilliant catch running towards the boundary, and at halfway the Tridents were a staggering 22/6.

Tahir’s second over was survived, but in the next over Naveen and the Amazon Warriors picked up two more. First Ashley Nurse pulled straight to Romario Shepherd at deep square leg, then Raymon Reifer looped the ball up to Pooran off his glove while playing forward, leaving the Tridents 27/8 after 12.

Mitchell Santner finally hit the Tridents’ first boundaries, swinging Tahir for a Hero Maximum then straight driving for four. Santner then lofted Magram for a Hero Maximum to take the Tridents past the lowest score in Hero CPL history - 53 all out back in 2013 by the Trinidad franchise. Rashid Khan slapped two sixes off Keemo Paul, but Rashid fell trying to slice Naveen over the off-side, Sinclair taking a good catch at deep cover.

Naveen finished with venue-record T20 figures, and the Tridents were 79/9 off 18. Hayden Walsh Jr slapped a four off Paul, and while Santner was run out off the last ball, they and Rashid had at least ensured the Tridents had batted the whole innings and got a recognisable T20 total - the same total they failed to chase against the St Lucia Zouks at Queen’s Park Oval on Sunday.

Holder had two slips in place for his first over, a maiden to Brandon King. Santner got some drift, almost swing, with his arm-ball, but dropped short enough for King to crash a cut for four. Holder finally conceded his first run off his 11th ball via a Sinclair edge and Santner’s second went for just one.

Holder attacked with Rashid in the Powerplay, and while the Afghan fired five wides, he beat Sinclair all ends up and knocked back his off-stump. Hetmyer was lucky to inside-edge for four past the stumps first ball, and to see a pull off Holder fall just short of Santner at mid-on, but King lofted the last ball of Holder’s over over long leg for a Hero Maximum to take the Amazon Warriors to 31/1 off the Powerplay.

Hetmyer fell to Walsh to continue his run of low scores, beaten through the gate, and with Pooran in early off the back of his brilliant century against the Patriots, Holder attacked with his wrist-spinners in tandem. King was lucky to survive a wild swipe off Walsh, but the wrist-spin attack was just about seen off and King cashed in by cutting Nurse for four. At halfway, the Amazon Warriors were 52/2.

First ball after the break, King hammered a flat Hero Maximum off Holder and the over went for 10. Nurse was nudged around, but King had started to find his feet and whipped Rashid hard for four to take the Amazon Warriors to 72/2 off 13. King took his score to 40 and his strike rate over 100 with an inventive flick off the stumps over short fine leg for four, and Santner was milked for six to take the required runs under double figures.

Walsh dropped a tough diving catch to deny Rashid a second wicket, but King was able to bring up his first 50 of the season with the score-levelling stroke. Pooran nudged the run that confirmed a win that hadn’t looked in doubt for the majority of the 36.4 overs bowled tonight, and ensured that Hero CPL 2020 lightning would not strike twice.

Suresh Raina on Wednesday revealed the reason behind him leaving the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) camp ahead of much-awaited Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020. There were many reports citing different theories but Raina has now come out in public to reveal what made him return back to India.

Raina said that there was something that needed to be addressed immediately on a personal front while adding that he might even return back to the Super Kings camp for IPL 2020. The swashbuckling southpaw said that he has a young family and was worried about them during this time of global pandemic.

“It was a personal decision and I had to come back for my family. There was something that needed to be addressed immediately on the home front. CSK is my family too and Mahi bhai (MS Dhoni) is very important to me and this was a tough decision. There is no issue between CSK and me. Nobody will just turn their back on Rs 12.5 crore and walk away without a solid reason. I might have retired from international cricket but I'm still young and I am looking forward to playing for them in the IPL for the next 4-5 years,” Raina told Cricbuzz.

TRENDING | Watch: COVID-19 positive Deepak Chahar inspires as CSK share his leg-day workout video

Speculation surrounding Raina’s sudden exit was rife when Srinivasan termed him as ‘Prima Donna’ while adding that sometimes success can get into the head of players among other comments. However, the Super Kings boss clarified that he was misquoted.

Speaking of Srinivasan, Raina said: “He is like a father figure to me and he's always stood by me and is close to my heart. He treats me like his younger son and am sure a lot of what he said was taken out of context. Ek baap apne bacche ko daant sakta hai(A father can scold his son). He didn't know the real reasons for me leaving when he gave those comments. Now he's been informed about them and he even sent me a message thereafter. We've chatted about it and both CSK and I just want to get over with it.”

Raina didn’t rule out the possibility of returning to Chennai Super Kings camp for IPL 2020 and lauded the BCCI and CSK team management for doing a commendable job with the bio-secure environment and organising IPL 2020 in UAE.

“I've been training even while quarantining here. You never know you might see me in the camp there again.

“The team management and BCCI are doing a very commendable job keeping everyone safe. This has never been done before and its new for everyone. It's a highly secure environment and no one without access can move anywhere. We were all inside our rooms with no human interaction and there was a test every 2 days,” Raina said.

“I have a young family back home and I was concerned about the fact that if something happened to me, unka kya hoga?(what'll happen to them). My family is most important to me and I am really concerned for them during these times. I haven't seen my kids for more than 20 days, even after coming back, since I am in quarantine,” he added.

Raina further spoke about the horrific incident involving his family in Pathankot, Punjab, where his uncle was slaughtered to death by assailants as he said it was his responsibility to return home and take care of them.

“The Pathankot incident was horrible and has really been very disturbing for everyone in our family. And it was my responsibility to come back and take care of them. But since I've returned, I've been in quarantine here. So, I still have to go meet my parents and my buawho are all in great distress,” Raina said.

TRENDING | Watch: COVID-19 positive Deepak Chahar inspires as CSK share his leg-day workout video Speculation surrounding Raina’s sudden exit was rife when Srinivasan termed him as ‘Prima Donna’ while adding that sometimes success can get into the head of players among other comments. We've chatted about it and both CSK and I just want to get over with it.” Raina didn’t rule out the possibility of returning to Chennai Super Kings camp for IPL 2020 and lauded the BCCI and CSK team management for doing a commendable job with the bio-secure environment and organising IPL 2020 in UAE. Till date we don’t know what exactly had happened that night & who did this. I request @PunjabPoliceInd to look into this matter. We at least deserve to know who did this heinous act to them. IPL 2020: Suresh Raina reveals reason behind leaving CSK camp, gives hint of a comeback

Lionel Messi boycotted Barcelona's first pre-season training session on Monday, club sources have confirmed to AFP, as the striker upped the stakes in his battle to leave this summer.

After skipping coronavirus tests on Sunday, Messi was absent again from the club's Ciutat Esportiva training ground, where Ronald Koeman held a session at 5:30pm, his first since being appointed Barca coach.

It appears increasingly likely Messi will try to force a transfer by refusing to play in La Liga next season, which begins on September 12.

The 33-year-old and his lawyers believe that participating in Barcelona's pre-season programme would contradict their argument that Messi no longer belongs to the club.

They insist a clause in his contract that allows Messi to depart for free this summer was activated last Tuesday, when the burofax stating his intention to leave arrived at the Camp Nou.

But Barcelona maintain that clause had to be activated by June 10 and the deadline has not been extended, despite the season being prolonged due to the pandemic, with the men's Champions League final played on August 23.

La Liga backed up Barca's position on Sunday by announcing that the release clause in Messi's contract, set at 700 million euros ($833 million), still applies.

The club's captain and greatest ever player, who has scored 634 goals for them and won 34 titles, now risks being punished either by a fine or, if his absence continues, a reduction in salary.

Manchester City remain favourites to sign Messi, whose basic salary alone amounts to around 60 million euros.

The Argentinian has reportedly spoken to City coach Pep Guardiola but other clubs remain in the running, including Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan and Juventus.
