Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) are all set to lock horns with St Lucia Zouks (SLZ) in the final of Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2020 at the Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad on Thursday. While TKR has been unbeaten in the league so far and will going for the final kill in the summit clash, SLZ head into the final encounter with a comfortable win in the semi-final.

TKR are packed with some big names and will hope the likes of Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo and Sunil Narine help the team cross the final hurdle. Zouks will be banking on their skipper Daren Sammy to pull off a magic and cast an upset to lift the coveted trophy.

CPL 2020 has been a mixed affair in terms of high-scoring matches with spinners dominating on slow and sluggish tracks. However, given the fire-power in both the line-ups, plenty of runs can be expected. The team which controls the run-flow better has an added advantage in the summit clash of Caribbean Premier League 2020.

LaLiga Santander made history on Wednesday, becoming the first European sports league to ring the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) opening bell. LaLiga president, Javier Tebas, and the country head of Banco Santander in Spain, Rami Aboukhair, rang the opening bell during the digital ceremony on Wednesday morning.

The NYSE bell ringing was carried out remotely due to COVID. The ceremony featured images of the crests of all of the LaLiga clubs. LaLiga's involvement, which was secured thanks to Banco Santander, underscores the organization's social, sporting and financial status on a global scale.

The honor represents LaLiga’s strategic international expansion efforts following the launch of LaLiga North America, the joint venture between LaLiga and Relevent Sports Group, two years ago. LaLiga North America has developed a regional strategy bringing LaLiga and its clubs closer to its fans, establishing partnerships and new revenue opportunities, and positioing itself as a leader in growing a foreign competition in the United States.

"We're delighted to have taken part in the virtual Wall Street bell ringing. The financial markets are Banco Santander's usual playing field and today sees us joined by LaLiga Santander, a competition which is about more than just football. It accounts for 1.4% of Spain's GDP and creates almost 200,000 jobs across the country. In short, it helps society to progress. And besides the business aspect, it's all about passion, entertainment and values, such as sacrifice, effort and teamwork, that we identify strongly with," commented Aboukhair.

"It's a source of pride for LaLiga and its clubs to virtually take part in the Wall Street bell ringing alongside our main sponsors, Banco Santander, in an event that once again highlights LaLiga's social standing, its internationalisation and contribution towards the Spain brand and the country's economy," declared Tebas.

The Trinbago Knight Riders spinners blasted a hole in the Jamaica Tallawahs top order to set up a cruise to a sub-par total with a full five overs to go, and leave themselves one win away from completing the first perfect season in Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) history.

Knight Riders captain Kieron Pollard had enough faith in his opening bowlers to start with himself at short leg, and Akeal Hosein repaid that faith by bowling Jermaine Blackwood. The Tallawahs sprung a surprise sending Mujeeb Ur Rahman in at number three, who just about played out a wicket-maiden.

The Tallawahs were rocked further when Glenn Phillips cut Khary Pierre to Ali Khan. Nkrumah Bonner finally hit the game’s first boundary, easing Hosein through cover, but the Mujeeb experiment failed as he edged a reverse sweep onto his pad and was caught at slip, and the Tallawahs had slumped to 10/3 off three overs.

Five wides from Pierre and a straight four by Bonner more than doubled the Tallawahs tally, but while Asif Ali got off the mark with a four over Hosein’s head he fell next ball cutting to Pollard at point. Pollard immediately went back into short leg, and kept himself there for the returning Sunil Narine who went for just three to close out a dominant Powerplay for the Knight Riders, after which the Tallawahs were reeling at 28/4.

Bonner continued to resist - he cut Fawad Ahmed powerfully for four, a misfield gave him another off Narine to take him to 30, and he pulled Fawad to take the Tallawahs past 50. Pierre returned with a tight over that went for just three, and at the 10 over mark the Tallawahs were 55/4.

Hosein bowled out with an over of just five, and Fawad ended Bonner’s resistance with a quick googly. That finally brought Andre Russell to the crease, but Narine put an end to his innings before it got going. Russell was beaten in the flight, the ball looped to DJ Bravo at slip and the umpire adjudged it came off bat and pad. The Tallawahs had lost their biggest weapon, and were 68/6 in the 14th.

Three more boundary-less overs came and went. Rovman Powell had now faced 32 balls for his 26 runs, Carlos Brathwaite had managed only one off his 10 balls, and something had to give off Pierre’s last over. Powell hit one Hero Maximum, the first of the innings, but picked out Pollard at deep mid-off trying to repeat the shot next ball. Even with that six, he finished under a run a ball, and the Tallawahs were 92/7 off 18.

Brathwaite was lucky not to be run out first ball of the 19th, bowled by DJ Bravo whose three overs didn’t contain a single boundary. Ali Khan got the unusual job of bowling only the 20th over, and while Brathwaite finished the innings with a Hero Maximum that was only the third boundary in the last 11 overs of the innings.

Lendl Simmons steered then pulled Fidel Edwards for consecutive fours to end the first over, but Narine wasn’t able to provide his usual powerful start, bowled by Mujeeb’s arm ball. Powell followed Pollard’s aggressive lead by putting himself at short leg, but Tion Webster was not intimidated, slapping Veerasammy Permaul through cover then slicing him for four to ruin a tight start to the over. After three overs, the Knight Riders were 23/1.

Webster was confident enough to cut Mujeeb’s googly for four, and with wickets a must Powell for the first time in Hero CPL 2020 went to Sandeep Lamichhane in the Powerplay. Simmons paddled him for four first ball and then pulled Mujeeb to the fence, and the Knight Riders closed the Powerplay at 42/1. The required run rate was already under five an over.

Simmons marred a good over from Lamichhane with a slog-swept Hero Maximum, bringing up the Knight Riders’ 50. Simmons and Webster were able to work Lamichhane around as no-one had all tournament, and though Permaul’s second went for just two and his third was a maiden, at halfway the Knight Riders were comfortable at 61/1, needing just 47 more to win.

Russell was called on to bowl, but Simmons pulled him for a Hero Maximum and, when Russell bowled a second short ball which was called a no-ball, helicoptered the free hit for four. Permaul bowled out with another economical over, but Simmons again pulled Russell for six to take 10 off the 13th over. The Knight Riders were now 90/1 and needed just 18 more.

Webster guided Lamichhane through cover for four to end the Nepali’s only wicketless spell of an excellent tournament, and Simmons became the leading 50-maker in the tournament’s history, overtaking Chris Gayle with a cover drive for four off Brathwaite, and Webster finished the job that same over.

Simmons needs just three more runs in Thursday’s final to overtake Gayle as Hero CPL’s all-time leading scorer. Much more importantly though, the Knight Riders have a chance to do what last year’s Guyana Amazon Warriors could not, and in doing so win a fourth Hero CPL title. The victors in the second semi will have a mighty task to deny them.

CPL 2020: Dominant TKR one away from perfection

Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne has been named PFA Player of the Year for season 2019/20. The Belgian international becomes the first male Manchester City player ever to win the accolade that is voted for by his fellow professionals.

The midfielder, who also takes his place in the Team of the Year alongside former teammate and City legend David Silva, scored 16 goals and made 23 assists across all competitions – equalling Thierry Henry’s Premier League record of 20 assists in one season. De Bruyne fought off competition from team-mate Raheem Sterling and Liverpool quartet Virgil van Dijk, Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mane and Trent Alexander Arnold to receive the coveted prize.

While both Izzy Christiansen and Lucy Bronze have won the women’s equivalent in previous campaigns, De Bruyne becomes the first City player ever to win the men’s award.

Speaking of his award, de Bruyne said: “It’s a huge honour. To be voted for by your colleagues and competitors from other teams who you play against and they vote for you for best player is amazing.

“It’s strange that I’m the first one at City given all the good players that have played here before and who are still playing here but it’s nice to represent the club.

“I think it is [the ultimate honour] because you compete against them, they want to win the trophies, they want to be the best. When they vote for you, and it’s everyone who is voting not just a few players, that means you’ve done really well during the season.”

Manager Pep Guardiola led the congratulations: “To win this award is an outstanding achievement, and Kevin is so deserving of it.

“To be recognised by other players is the most that any footballer can ask for, because they understand not only what it is to compete against you, but also the level of commitment it takes to play at the very top.

“There have been many great players in this club’s history, especially over the last decade working with Roberto, Manuel and myself. We have won many titles, but Kevin is the first to receive this prestigious award. This recognition is also a tribute to all the fantastic players who have come before him.

“We are so proud of Kevin and this will only strengthen what he means to this club and our fans. From all the players, coaches and staff at Manchester City, I would like to congratulate him.”

Kevin de Bruyne crowned PFA Player of the Year

Fifth seed Alexander Zverev defeated Borna Coric in four sets to reach the US Open semi-finals on Tuesday.

The German overcame the 27th-seeded Croatian 1-6, 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/1), 6-3 in 3hr 25min inside Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Zverev, seeking a maiden Grand Slam title, will play either 12th seed Canadian Denis Shapovalov or Spain's 20th seed Pablo Carreno Busta for a place in the final.

The 23-year-old Zverev said he stepped on the gas after finding himself a set down, and 4-2 behind in the second set.

"I just started playing maybe a little bit more aggressive because if I would have played the way I played it's not the level for a quarter-final match of a Grand Slam," he said.

"I just started playing better. I was a little bit more consistent and as well, my serve got better.

"I thought to myself I'm down 6-1, 4-2, I have nothing to lose at the moment," Zverev added.

Zverev performed well when kept his first serves in play. He smashed 18 aces, while the 23-year-old Coric could only make five.

The world number seven struggled with consistency at times, however.

He hit 12 double faults, ten more than Coric.

Zverev won 76 percent of first serve points compared to just 41 percent on his second serve.

The German hit far more winners than the Croatian though, 52 to 37.

It was a close contest, with Zverev accumulating 136 points in total, just four more than Coric.

The disqualification of top seed Novak Djokovic on Sunday blew the men's competition at Flushing Meadows wide open.

His departure means the US Open will crown a first-time Grand Slam winner on Sunday.

In Wednesday's quarter-final matches, second seed Dominic Thiem plays Australia's Alex de Minaur and third seed Daniil Medvedev takes on Russian compatriot Andrey Rublev.

Alexander Zverev beats Borna Coric to reach US Open semi-finals

Liverpool and Manchester City remain the teams to beat after three seasons of total dominance but a rejuvenated Manchester United and free-spending Chelsea could force themselves into a four-way race for the title.

AFP Sport looks at how last season's top four are shaping up ahead of the new season.

Liverpool

After a first league title in 30 years, Liverpool's challenge will change radically. The club have freed themselves from the burden of history but must ensure the 2020/21 season does not become a huge anti-climax.

A lack of fresh blood for the second consecutive season is a risk for Jurgen Klopp's men, who have amassed 196 points over the past two seasons.

Left-back Kostas Tsimikas is the only addition so far, as back up to Andy Robertson.

The financial fallout from the coronavirus pandemic meant the arrival of Timo Werner never transpired as the German instead headed for Chelsea, again leaving Liverpool with little as back-up for the front three of Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

However, ahead of a season that will offer precious little time for respite, Klopp has at least had longer to prepare his squad, with his three major title rivals involved in European action in August.

Manchester City

City will not have Lionel Messi to take the title fight to Liverpool after the Argentine opted to remain in Barcelona, but it is at the other end of the pitch that Pep Guardiola's men needed to improve anyway to bounce back from a disappointing campaign.

Despite scoring 17 more goals than Liverpool, the dethroned champions finished 18 points behind in second last season.

One addition to the defence has already been made, with the £40 million ($52 million) signing of Nathan Ake from Bournemouth to provide cover at centre-back and left-back.

A marquee central defender is expected to arrive at the Etihad before the window closes in October, with Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly top of their wishlist.

Spanish international Ferran Torres had been added to a stellar cast of attacking talent to replace Leroy Sane, while David Silva's departure opens the door for 20-year-old Phil Foden to build on his impressive performances in the final stretch of last season.

City could be distracted by their desire to finally claim the Champions League in what could be Guardiola's final season in charge.

The Catalan is entering the final year of his contract and has been heavily criticised for failing to get City beyond the quarter-finals of Europe's top club competition over the past four years.

Manchester United

United shot up to third in the second half of last season on the back of a 14-game unbeaten run in the Premier League after the January signing of Bruno Fernandes.

A flourishing young front three of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood and more midfield depth with the signing of Donny van de Beek offers United some hope that they will not be left in the shade of their two biggest rivals, Liverpool and City, for much longer.

However, the manner in which Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men ended the season in mid-August, physically exhausted after a Europa League semi-final defeat to Sevilla, raises questions over whether they can maintain a title challenge in a crammed calendar over the next nine months.

An ambitious attempt to land Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund has stalled, leaving Solskjaer short on options beyond his preferred front three, while there is also a lack of cover in defence.

Chelsea

By far the biggest spenders of the transfer window across Europe, the Blues have splashed out nearly £200 million on Werner, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech and Ben Chilwell and bolstered a leaky defence with the signing of former PSG and Brazil captain Thiago Silva on a free transfer.

More could still be to come with Rennes' Edouard Mendy reportedly top of Chelsea's list in their hunt for a new goalkeeper.

Frank Lampard achieved his main goal during his first season in charge by securing a place in the Champions League despite a transfer ban and the loss of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid.

But expectations on the former England international will be far higher this season as owner Roman Abramovich will demand to see a return on his investment.

Lampard cannot afford for the attacking talents of Werner, Havertz and Ziyech to take their time to adjust to the Premier League.

However, most importantly, he must find the right balance to improve a defence that conceded 54 goals last season, more than any other side in the top half of the table.

Liverpool, Man City face tough battle from Premier League challengers

Mitchell Marsh marked his return to the world stage by leading Australia to a five-wicket consolation win over England at Southampton on Tuesday as they regained top spot in the global Twenty20 rankings from their arch-rivals.

Australia were cruising to a modest target of 146 at 70-1 even though they had rested dynamic opener David Warner in one of three changes to their side.

But they lost three wickets for 17 runs to be 87-4 before Marsh (39 not out) and Ashton Agar (16 not out) saw Australia to victory with three balls to spare.

"Six months is a long time without cricket so it's great to get the opportunity today," player-of-the-match Marsh told Sky Sports.

"It's nice to finish off the series and nice to contribute.

"I would've liked my first game back to be a bit easier than that... I certainly looked up to make sure (Adil) Rashid had bowled out and I do like pace on the ball."

England, however, still won the three-match series 2-1.

- 'Got us over the line' -

"The first couple of games, we played such good cricket for a lot of it and didn't finish it off," Australia captain Aaron Finch told Sky Sports. "But tonight Mitch and Ash got us over the line."

Australia's slump started when Marcus Stoinis holed out off Tom Curran before dangerman Glenn Maxwell fell for six when he reverse-swept leg-spinner Rashid to short third man.

Rashid, who should have dismissed Finch for 27 only for wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow to drop a skyed chance, then bowled the Australia captain for 39 with a superb googly.

And with the last ball of his spell, Rashid caught and bowled star batsman Steve Smith to finish with excellent figures of 3-21 from his four overs.

Australia were now 100-5, needing 46 more to win off the last seven overs.

But the recalled Marsh, in his first competitive match for Australia since a one-day international in March, settled their nerves with a six and a four in a 16th over from fast bowler Mark Wood that cost 14 runs.

When Agar drove Curran down the ground for four, Australia needed just one off the last over, bowled by Chris Jordan.

Marsh, however, could not score off the first two balls.

But the third saw him run the decisive single, although he would have been out if Joe Denly had hit the stumps with his throw from mid-off.

Earlier, Mitchell Starc led a disciplined bowling display as Australia held a revamped England to 145-6.

Fast bowler Starc took 1-20, with leg-spinner Adam Zampa returning fine figures of 2-34.

Jonny Bairstow, with 55, was the only England batsman to pass 30.

But England were without captain Eoin Morgan (dislocated finger) and fellow star batsman Jos Buttler, absent for personal reasons after making a match-winning 77 not out in a six-wicket victory on Sunday.

They were also missing opener Jason Roy (side injury) and star all-rounder Ben Stokes, with his ill father in New Zealand, for the whole of this series.

But stand-in skipper Moeen Ali was grateful to have captained his country for the first time.

"It was a very proud moment and an amazing experience, sadly we didn't win but I thought we showed good fight in the end," he said. "Generally in the field we weren't great and we didn't back the bowlers up as we would have liked."

Bairstow, who struggled early on, struck left-arm spinner Ashton Agar and Zampa for two huge sixes.

He completed a 41-ball fifty with a superb straight six off Zampa.

However, Bairstow was out soon afterwards when caught and bowled after mistiming a pull off Agar.

England, the 50-over world champions, and Australia now head north to Manchester for a three-match one-day international series starting on Friday.

It will be the first time they have played an ODI since England beat Australia in the semi-finals of last year's World Cup.

Marsh stars as Australia regain top spot in T20 rankings from England

Lionel Messi was back in full training with Barcelona on Wednesday for the first time since conceding defeat in his battle to leave the club.

Unlike Monday, when the 33-year-old Argentine superstar had to train alone under La Liga's coronavirus protocol, he joined up with the rest of the squad in the session taken by new coach Ronald Koeman.

A club statement reported that others returning to the main group were Philippe Coutinho, Sergio Busquets, Frenkie de Jong and Ansu Fati.

Messi faces another season with the Catalan club after losing his stand-off with Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu over a 700 million-euro release clause.

The Argentinian superstar hit out at Bartomeu in his bitter announcement last week that he was staying and warned he was expecting to see progress, saying: "There is a new coach and new ideas. That's good, but then we have to see how the team responds and whether or not it will allow us to compete at the top level."

Adding to Messi's discomfort his two closest friends at Barcelona, Luis Suarez and Arturo Vidal, are expected to join Juventus and Inter Milan respectively.

Koeman's first match in charge since replacing Quique Setien in the aftermath of last month's humiliating 8-2 Champions League pounding by Bayern Munich is a friendly against third division opposition on Saturday.

While the debate over who is the better batsman between Smith and Virat Kohli has always been a heated topic on social media platforms, Smith named the Indian skipper as the best ODI batsman at the moment. Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has written to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah in a bid to come out of retirement and start playing for Punjab in domestic T20 cricket.

Yuvraj, who announced his retirement in 2019, before going on to play in overseas T10 tournaments, will need to have a clearance from the BCCI if he wants to resume his cricketing career in the Indian domestic circuit.

The two-time World Cup winner said that he enjoyed spending time with young players while talking to them about various aspects of the game and added he would love to help them take that extra step forward while helping the team with his presence on the field.

"I enjoyed spending time with these youngsters, and talking to them about various aspects of the game, I realised that they were able to pick up various things that I was telling them," Yuvraj, 38, told Cricbuzz on Wednesday afternoon, as he confirmed his comeback plans. "I had to get into the nets to show them a few other elements, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well I was hitting the ball even though I hadn't held a bat for a really long time."

"I also trained for those two months, and then I started to bat in the off-season camp. I made runs in some of the practice matches. Mr Puneet Bali, the secretary of the Punjab Cricket Association, approached me after one of the sessions and asked me if I would reconsider coming out of retirement,” Yuvraj explained.

Bali is of the view that Yuvraj’s mentorship could help the youngsters massively and the southpaw was looking in great touch so why not come back and play some more domestic cricket?

"Initially, I wasn't sure that I wanted to take up the offer," Yuvraj admits. "I was done with domestic cricket, though I did want to continue to play in other domestic franchise-based leagues worldwide if I got permission from the BCCI. But I also couldn't ignore Mr Bali's request. I gave it a lot of thought, for nearly three or four weeks, and it was almost as if I didn't even have to make a conscious decision in the end.

"The motivation is to help Punjab win championships. Bhajji (Harbhajan Singh), myself, we have won tournaments, but we haven't done it together for Punjab, so that was a big factor in my final call," Yuvraj points out. "Obviously, Shubman is already playing for India, and I feel there's plenty of potential in the other three boys. If I can contribute in any way to their development and to the development of Punjab cricket, then that will be wonderful. After all, playing for Punjab is what paved the way for my international career."

Yuvraj, in his letter of Ganguly and Shah, made it clear that he would not pursue his options of playing in overseas leagues once he is given the green signal to return to Indian domestic cricket. Yuvraj had earlier played for Toronto Nationals in Global T20 Canada and Maratha Arabians in Abu Dhabi T10 League.

"As things stand now, I will be playing only T20s if I get the nod," Yuvraj observes. "But who knows, let's see."

After missing Portugal’s UEFA Nation League opener against Croatia, Cristiano Ronaldo was back among the goals as he surpassed the 100-goal mark for his country with a thumping brace on Tuesday. After becoming the second player ever and first European to reach the 100 international goals mark, Ronaldo has now set his sights on Ali Daei’s record of 109 goals. Ronaldo is now just eight goals away from equalising the record and nine away from becoming the all-time leading scorer in international football.

Ronaldo scored a stunning first-hall free kick before adding his second from open play in the 72nd minute of the match to close in on Daei’s record. However, Ronaldo is of the view that while he will go after Daei’s record, he is not obsessed about reaching the milestone.

"I managed to beat this milestone of 100 goals and now (I'll go) for the record. It's step-by-step. I am not obsessed because I believe the records come in a natural way," Ronaldo said after the match against Sweden.

"When I had this problem in my toe I always knew that I could recover for this second game. I like to be here, with this group of players, coach, staff and knew that they would play well in the first game as our squad is too good and no one is irreplaceable," added the 35-year-old.

Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes said having Ronaldo back with the team was good for the players. Ronaldo have scored five times in his previous matches against Sweden.

"Yesterday he scored six or seven (free kicks) like that in training and today it went exactly the same way. It's so good to have Cristiano on the team," Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes said.

Ronaldo could have had a hat-trick easily but it was Swedish goalkeeper Robin Olson who made a terrific save in the 81st minute.

"The future, only God knows. I am happy to play with these young players and I am enjoying a lot this moment both individually and collectively," he said.

The 33-year-old left-hander has progressed four places after a series-topping run aggregate of 129, which included a player of the match effort of 66 in the first fixture.
England won the series 2-1.

Malan, whose previous best ranking was second in November last year, is now eight rating points ahead of Azam. India's K L Rahul, who has not played international cricket in over six months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has lost two places to be fourth and his skipper Virat Kohli has gained a spot to be ninth.

Malan's teammates Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler have also made headway in Wednesday's update.

Bairstow has gained three slots to reach a career-best 19th position after scoring 72 runs in the series while Buttler has moved from 40th to 28th after scoring 121 runs in two matches, which also won him the player of the series award.

For Australia, captain Aaron Finch's 125 runs in the series have helped him retain third position. Glenn Maxwell also holds on to his sixth position among batsmen while gaining one slot to reach second position in the list of all-rounders led by Afghanistan's Mohammad Nabi.

England leg-spinner Adil Rashid has gained two slots to reach seventh position after finishing as the most successful bowler in the series with six wickets, while Australia left-arm spinner Ashton Agar's five wickets have enabled him retain third position, behind the Afghanistan spin pair of Rashid Khan and Mujeeb ur Rahman.

Australia fast bowler Kane Richardson has moved into the top 10 for the first time in his career after taking three wickets in the series while his compatriot Mitchell Starc (up seven places to 18th) and England's Mark Wood (up 41 places to 79th) have also made notable gains.

Meanwhile, Australia have reclaimed the top spot in the team rankings after briefly conceding it to England during the series.

Australia started the series 10 points ahead of their rivals at 278, but were overtaken after losing the first two matches, when both were on 273 points, with England ahead on decimal points.

Australia, who were number one for the first time in this format at the time of the annual update on May 1 this year, are now on 275 points and England on 271.

Josh Hazlewood was back in the Australian T20I playing XI after a gap of four years and the pacer lived up to the expectations as he ended up with the big wicket of Tom Banton while conceding just 23 runs off his four-over quota as Australia won the third T20I by five wickets to become the number one T20I side in ICC Rankings.

Hazlewood bowled the first two overs of his spell with his usual 'good-length' deliveries before bringing in his variations for the third and fourth overs. A couple of bumpers from the Aussie quick, who replaced Pat Cummins in the XI, did trouble the English batsman in what was a sluggish track in Southampton.

Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar has slammed chief-selector cum head coach of Pakistan cricket team Misbah-ul-Haq for saying that he has taken over a side that is in decline. Akhtar lashed out at the former Pakistan captain as he said that honest and strong people don’t find excuses but take strong decision while adding Misbah should look into improving the squad rather than complaining.

IPL 2020: BCCI president Sourav Ganguly leaves for Dubai to oversee preparations

World number one Dustin Johnson capped a two-under-par 68 with a birdie at the last to seal a three-stroke victory in the US PGA Tour Championship and earn the $15 million FedEx Cup playoff title on Sunday.

Johnson finished with a 21-under-par total at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta -- three shots clear of Americans Xander Schauffele and Justin Thomas.

"I hit the fairways when I needed to coming down the stretch," said Johnson, who started the day with a five-shot lead.

He rolled in an 18-foot birdie putt at the third, a 10-footer at the fifth and a three-footer at the sixth.

But bogeys at the seventh and eighth -- where he was in a fairway bunker -- opened the door just a crack for Thomas and Schauffele.

Neither could do enough, never getting the deficit below two strokes as Johnson parred nine straight.

That run included a 21-foot par-saving putt at the 13th, where he was in the left rough off the tee and right of the green and hit a poor chip but drained the putt to push his lead back to three over Schauffele.

"He made that putt, which I didn't," said Schauffele, who bogeyed the 13th. "That was a pinnacle moment, I think."

"Obviously it's a very tough trophy to win. This time I did control my own destiny, I knew what I had to do.

"But I still had to go out and play well today. I had a lot of great players right behind me and they played some good golf today. I knew I was going to have to come down the stretch and hit some golf shots."

He was in the fairway at the par-five 18th, but his approach hit the bank in front of the green and bounced back into the greenside bunker. He blasted out to five feet and made the putt for a closing birdie.

The 36-year-old claimed his 23rd US PGA Tour title and his third since the tour resumed in June after a three-month coronavirus shutdown.

He's the first overall points leader since 2009 to win the season-ending showdown for the $15 million (12.6 million euro) playoff prize.

Johnson had a head start coming into Eastlake. He began the week on 10-under thanks to his season points edge.

Spain's second-ranked Jon Rahm was next on 8-under with third-ranked Thomas on 7-under and others up to 10 shots adrift in the staggered start system.

- 'dialed in' -

Rahm, who edged Johnson in a playoff at the BMW Championship a week earlier, finished alone in third on 17-under after closing with his second straight 66.

Schauffele actually had the week's lowest 72-hole total of 15-under 265, but under the staggered start format he started the week seven adrift.

Johnson played 72 holes in 11-under 269.

Prior to his dramatic near miss at the BMW Championship, Johnson won the Northern Trust by 11 strokes to seize the world number one ranking.

In June, he won the Travelers Championship -- his first title since February 2019.

"I'm definitely playing probably the best I've ever played," the 2016 US Open champion said. "I really feel like everything is dialed in pretty well."

The Tour Championship marked the official end of the US tour's pandemic-disrupted 2019-2020 season.

The 2020-21 season starts this week with the Safeway Open, and while Johnson won't be there he and the world's other top golfers won't be settling down for some rest with the rescheduled US Open coming up at Winged Foot September 17-20.

"You've only got a few days," Johnson said.

Johnson wins Tour Championship and $15mn FedEx Cup playoff crown

World number one Ashleigh Barty announced Tuesday she will not defend her French Open crown, citing the coronavirus fears that also prompted her and several other top players to withdraw from the US Open.

The Australian, who claimed her maiden Grand Slam at Roland Garros in 2019, said it was a "difficult" decision but the health of her family and team came first.

"Last year's French Open was the most special tournament of my career so this is not a decision I have made lightly," she said on social media.

"There are two reasons for my decision -- the first is the health risks that still exist with Covid.

"The second is my preparation, which has not been ideal without my coach being able to train with me due to the state border closures in Australia."

Barty is based in Brisbane while her coach, Craig Tyzzer, is in Melbourne and unable to travel as the city battles a significant second-wave virus outbreak.

She announced in late July that she would sit out the US Open, currently underway in New York, with defending men's champion Rafael Nadal and world number two Simona Halep among those who also opted out because of the pandemic.

At the time, Barty was still monitoring the situation with the French Open, which is due to start on September 27, but said Tuesday her withdrawal was the latest development in "a challenging year for everyone".

"I wish the players and the French Federation all the best for a successful tournament," the 24-year-old said.

"I now look forward to a long pre-season and the summer in Australia."

- Serena undecided -

The fate of Barty's home Grand Slam, the Australian Open in January, is yet to be determined, with the possibility it could be moved out of Melbourne if the city's outbreak has not eased.

Barty's straight-sets victory over Marketa Vondrousova in the French Open last year helped propel her to world number one, a position she has held since.

Her last competitive singles match was in late February at the Qatar Open.

Barty's French Open withdrawal comes after tournament organisers said all players at the Grand Slam would be housed in two designated hotels "without exception" to reduce coronavirus risks.

Daily crowd numbers have been reduced to 11,500 from 20,000 and the Roland Garros complex is being divided into three independent zones, with no crossover between them.

Serena Williams has indicated she would prefer to stay in private accommodation while competing in Paris, as she has done in New York.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion, who has a history of serious lung problems, said she would speak to French Open organisers before making a decision on whether to compete.

"I'm honestly taking it one day at a time. I'm going to have to make the best decision for my health," Williams told reporters after making the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows.

"It's just, I still have some questions, but I'm really kind of, ironically, focused on New York but it's kind of hard because these Grand Slams are so close to each other this year," she added.

"I wish the players and the French Federation all the best for a successful tournament," the 24-year-old said. "I now look forward to a long pre-season and the summer in Australia." - Serena undecided - The fate of Barty's home Grand Slam, the Australian Open in January, is yet to be determined, with the possibility it could be moved out of Melbourne if the city's outbreak has not eased.

Defending champion Barty to skip French Open over coronavirus fears

Serena Williams battled into the quarter-finals of the US Open on Monday as top men's seeds Dominic Thiem and Daniil Medvedev sailed through to the last eight at Flushing Meadows.

After Williams kept her bid for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles title alive, second seed Sofia Kenin was sent crashing out in the last 16 by Belgium's Elise Mertens.

Williams had to summon up every last ounce of strength to depose 15th seed Maria Sakkari in three hard-fought sets.

The 38-year-old American needed almost two and a half hours to dislodge her 25-year-old Greek opponent 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 6-3 inside an empty Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.

"She's such a good competitor. It was a really intense match," said Williams, who had been dumped out of a US Open tuneup tournament by the same opponent last month.

"I felt like she almost played better today. I was a little fatigued last time and had some cramps. Just felt like I was able to compete longer," Williams added.

There was little separating the players throughout the energy-sapping contest, with Williams notching 107 total points to Sakkari's 99.

Williams won 72 percent of points off her first serve while Sakkari won 73 percent. Sakkari also outdid Williams on aces, by 13 to 12.

Williams rallied from two games down in the deciding set, pumping herself up with loud screams that echoed around the spectator-free arena as she broke Sakkari twice to clinch the last-eight spot.

"I'm super passionate. This is my job. This is what I wake up to do. This is what I train to do 365 days of the year," Williams said afterwards.

The American will play Tsvetana Pironkova for a place in the semi-finals after the Bulgarian ousted France's Alize Cornet in another draining three-setter.

- 'Absolutely unreal' -

Pironkova, playing her first tournament in three years after a lengthy break in which she gave birth to her son, prevailed 6-4, 6-7 (5/7), 6-3 at the Louis Armstrong Stadium.

"It's absolutely unreal, I really can't believe it," said Pironkova, whose last tournament appearance before this year's US Open was the 2017 Wimbledon championships when she exited in the second round.

Mertens ousted Kenin, this year's Australian Open champion, 6-3, 6-3 in 1hr 14 mins to set up a last-eight tie with former world number one Victoria Azarenka.

The Belarusian overcame 20th seed Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 in 2hr 30min at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

In the men's draw, second-seeded Thiem raced into the round of eight with a three-set demolition of Canadian rising star Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Thiem dismantled the 20-year-old 15th seed 7-6 (7/4), 6-1, 6-1 in 2hr 7min.

"I played a great match today, the best one from my whole America trip," said Thiem.

He will play Australia's 21st seed Alex de Minaur for a spot in the semi-finals after the Australian breezed past unseeded Canadian Vasek Pospisil 7-6 (8/6), 6-3, 6-2, in 2hr 17 min.

Third seed Medvedev blew away unseeded American France Tiafoe 6-4, 6-1, 6-0 in only 1hr 38 min.

"I'm pleased with the fact that I've won all of these sets and didn't have to stay long on the court. That's always good when you're playing a Grand Slam," said the Russian.

Medvedev will face compatriot Andrey Rublev for a spot in the last four after the 10th seed ousted Italy's sixth seed Matteo Berrettini 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.

The men's competition was blown wide open on Sunday after world number one Novak Djokovic was thrown out for accidentally hitting a line judge after smashing a ball in frustration during his last-16 match.

His departure means the US Open will this year produce a first-time Grand Slam winner in the men's competition.

Williams is seeking to equal Margaret Court's record for the most women's Grand Slam singles titles.

A tournament victory at the weekend would also see her break away from Chris Evert, on six titles, as the most decorated US Open champion of the women's game in the modern era.

England and Australia are all set to lock horns in the third and final T20I match at the Rose Bowl in Southampton on Tuesday. While England have already sealed the series by winning the first two matches of the series, a lot is riding on the final encounter as the winning team will become the number one ranked T20I side in the ICC Test rankings.

Virat Kohli says he has "never felt so calm" going into an Indian Premier League season as the Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper chases an elusive title in the Twenty20 tournament.

Kohli's Bangalore finished runners-up in the 2016 edition but have since disappointed and were bottom of the eight-team table last year.

But the world's leading ODI batsman expects a turnaround from a team containing big names such as South Africa's explosive AB de Villiers and Australia's big-hitting white ball skipper Aaron Finch.

"I (have) never felt so calm going into a season before," Kohli said during an interview posted on his side's YouTube channel on Monday ahead of the tournament beginning September 19 in the United Arab Emirates.

"He (de Villiers) is coming from a very different space and he is enjoying his life and is very relaxed and fit as ever. I feel I am in a much better space, much more balanced, when it comes to environment of (the) IPL.

"Aaron Finch is someone who has experience of playing international cricket."

Kohli has captained Bangalore since 2013 and said the tournament being played outside India because of coronavirus meant his side would be "disconnecting with things that have happened in the past and not taking that baggage, as we have done that way too many times.

"Just because we have a bunch of players that are so skilled... people have had so much expectation," he admitted.

Bangalore's other imported talent includes South African pace bowler Chris Morris and little known Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Josh Philippe.

"Morris brings in a lot of balance," said Kohli. "Some of the youngsters we have picked this time are quite exciting too like Josh Philippe, a very exciting player."

The IPL will be played across three venues within relatively close proximity -- Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi -- and Kohli feels that will lead to consistent playing conditions across the tournament.

"It (the usual home and away system in India) gets hectic, conditions change... This time, it's more of a level playing field and everything would now boil down to skill level rather than home advantage," he said.

"We have unpacked all bags and stacked clothes in the wardrobe. We go, practise, live in our own bio-bubble… It's a more settled and calm feeling."

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has apologised for the embarrassment caused by his breach of coronavirus regulations while on England duty in Iceland.

The 18-year-old said he had learned a lesson from the incident, which resulted in his being dropped from the squad for Tuesday's Nations League match in Denmark, along with Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden.

England manager Gareth Southgate refused to comment on the nature of the breach but media reports said the pair left the bio-secure bubble to meet two local girls.

Both players have been fined 250,000 Icelandic krona ($1,800, £1,350) by Reykjavik police and the Football Association said it would be launching a full investigation.

"Having now had the chance to reflect on what's happened, I can only apologise to everyone for the embarrassment I have caused," Greenwood said in a statement.

"It was irresponsible of me to break the Covid-19 protocols which are in place to protect players, staff and the public.

"In particular, I want to apologise to Gareth Southgate, for letting him down when he had shown great trust in me."

Greenwood added: "Playing for England was one of the proudest moments in my life and I only have myself to blame for this huge mistake.

"I promise my family, the fans, Manchester United and England that this is a lesson I will learn from."

Foden, 20, issued an apology on social media on Monday, saying he would learn a "valuable lesson".

With Lionel Messi deciding to stay at Barcelona, a campaign has been started to force a vote of no-confidence against club president Josep Maria Bartomeu. ‘Mes que una mocio’ (More than a motion), the group supported by next year’s presidential candidates have started a campaign to oust the Barcelona boss and have gathered already 7.500 signatures.

To successfully trigger the members voting process, the campaign needs to acquire at least 16,520 votes by September 17. If the campaign reaches the target and the vote of no-confidence motion is held then two thirds of the club’s 150,000 members would need to vote against Bartomeu to kick him out of the club and trigger an imminent election.

Notably, Bartomeu cannot stand again for elections as he has served two terms. He has called elections for March 2021, three months ahead of the schedule following Barcelona’s humiliating 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in UEFA Champions League in August.

The motion of no-confidence was filed by presidential candidate Jordi Farre on August 26, one day after club’s all-time high scorer and six-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi sent the burofax saying he wished to leave the Catalan club.

IPL 2020: From Raina to Malinga - Top players who have pulled out of the tournament

Anil Kumble, the head coach of Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), on Tuesday said that the side bought Glenn Maxwell in order to give the line-up a much-needed impact player in the middle.

The 2020 edition of the IPL will be played in the UAE from September 19 till November 10 across three venues -- Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah.

In the players' auction which was held in December 2019, Maxwell was bought by KXIP for INR 10.75 crore. The side had also increased depth in their bowling ranks after acquiring Windies pacer Sheldon Cottrell for INR 8.5 crore.

"In the players' auction we addressed that we needed an impact player and that is why we bought Glenn Maxwell. He can field and bat, he is a gun fielder as well. The other part was that we needed a fast bowler who can bowl at the death that is why we looked at Sheldon Cottrell. Overall we are satisfied with the squad we have. In the end, it's about keeping the things simple," Kumble replied to an ANI inquiry during a virtual interaction.

Kings XI Punjab will be led by KL Rahul this year, and Kumble is well aware of the qualities of the Karnataka-born batsman having seen him from childhood.

Talking about KL Rahul's leadership, Kumble said: "Knowing KL and some of the players from the past really helps. I have seen KL from his childhood. So far he has been brilliant, he knows the players better than me, he has been with the franchise for two years, he is very relaxed, he has been in the scene for a while now, he understands the nuances of the game, so all of that put together it really helps, I am happy with the start we have had, I am looking forward to the IPL under his leadership."

Kumble also gave his take on MS Dhoni playing the IPL 2020 after announcing his retirement from international cricket. The former India coach said that the wicket-keeper batsman would be highly motivated to do well for Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

"I don't understand what is the meaning of extra motivation. I am sure Dhoni is motivated that is why he is here. Knowing MS, he will obviously give his 100 percent, even when I played IPL's second season, I had retired, the last two seasons I played in IPL, I was retired. I am sure MS will be as motivated to do well in IPL," Kumble said.

Mumbai Indians will lock horns with Chennai Super Kings in the opener on September 19 in Abu Dhabi. Kings XI Punjab will face Delhi Capitals in their opening match of the tournament on September 20.

Seven franchises of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 have collectively hired a charter to bring 22 players from Manchester to Dubai which will cost them around one hundred thousand pounds and more.

England and Australian players, who are currently involved in the ongoing limited-overs series, will aboard a charter flight in Manchester after the last ODI of the England-Australia white-ball series, on September 17 and will be with their respective teams well ahead of the IPL 2020 openers, according to a report in Mumbai Mirror.

The likes of Steve Smith, David Warner, Aaron Finch, Pat Cummins, Jos Butter, Eoin Morgan, Jofra Archer among others will be heading to the UAE in a charter flight after the franchises decided to shell out a lump sum money together in a bid to get the six-day quarantine exempted. The only team that has not participated are Mumbai Indians.

The idea of bringing in a charter flight into the play is to transport all the players from the England bubble to IPL’s bio environment. Kolkata Knight Riders, based in Abu Dhabi, will need their players to undergo six-day isolation due to the strict protocols in the emirates. However, all three KKR players – Cummins, Banton and Morgan – will be eligible to play on September 23 – their seventh day in Abu Dhabi – after clearing all three COVID-19 tests.

IPL-bound English and Aussie players will travel to the airport in a sanitized bus and will land at a different airport, not at the regular Dubai International Airport.

“It has all been taken care of. The idea is that they are not outside of the bubble. If we had flown them by commercial flights, they would have had to undergo quarantine. And costwise also it would have been dearer as each player will have to be flown by business class. Close to Rs 1 crore for 22 players is not much I suppose,” a franchise official said.
