Ansu Fati became the youngest goalscorer in the history of the Spanish national team on Sunday by scoring in Spain's 4-0 win over Ukraine.

Aged 17 years and 311 days, Fati scored in the 32nd minute at the Alfredo di Stefano Stadium, when he cut in from the left and curled into the bottom corner.

It came after a spell-binding opening half an hour from the youngster, whose driving run had already earned a penalty for Sergio Ramos to convert.

Ramos then headed in to make it two before Fati made history on his first start for Spain, beating the country's previous youngest scorer, Juan Errazquin, who scored three goals aged 18 against Switzerland in 1925.

Manchester City's new signing Ferran Torres made it four late on as Spain registered their first victory in this season's Nations League to go top of League A's Group 4.

Luis Enrique's side had opened with a 1-1 draw on Thursday against Germany, whose second game ended in another 1-1 draw away at Switzerland.

Fati impressed off the bench against Germany, enough to be handed his first start by Luis Enrique on the left of Spain's front three.

He took his chance by putting on a mesmerising display, the only shame that there were no fans in the stadium to see it.

"At that age it's easy to get birds in your head," said Luis Enrique afterwards. "But he is mature enough to know that the path he is taking is the best to take as a player. He's quiet and humble."

- Fati confidence 'not normal' -

Fati is now the youngest player to score for Spain, for Barca in La Liga and the youngest to score in the Champions League as well.

"When we choose the squad, we don't look at the age," Luis Enrique added. "That doesn't mean you don't have to understand that he's going to play bad games and he's going to make lots of mistakes. It's part of learning but that kind of confidence isn't normal."

Born in Guinea-Bissau, Fati and his family moved to Seville when he was a young boy. He joined Barcelona's La Masia academy aged 10 and made his first team debut at the start of last season, becoming the second youngest player ever to play for the club.

He became the their youngest ever scorer in La Liga after scoring off the bench versus Osasuna and then scored on his first start for the Catalans too, against Valencia in September, aged 16.

The next day, Barcelona newspaper Mundo Deportivo wrote "A star is born" and he continued breaking records by hitting the winner against Inter Milan in the Champions League in December.

Fati was expected to be given his debut for Spain earlier this year but he had to wait as fixtures were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ukraine never got to grips with the winger, who won a penalty in the third minute, converted by Ramos, and then almost scored with a bicycle kick.

He fired wide of the far post after another darting dribble down the left and after Ramos headed in, he finally scored, cutting in from the left and ripping the ball into the far bottom corner.

Spain eased up in the second half but there was still time for a fourth, Torres finishing well at the back post to cap a memorable night.

Pierre Gasly jumped for joy on Sunday and then admitted he was too happy for words after claiming his maiden Formula One victory a year after being demoted by Red Bull to their junior sister team Alpha Tauri.

His stubborn and skilful drive to a stirring triumph in a tumultuous Italian Grand Prix was celebrated deliriously by the Faenza-based team on a day when their grandee fellow-Italians Ferrari suffered another debacle, this time on home soil.

It was only the former Minardi and Toro Rosso outfit's second win in Formula One since entering the sport in 1985.

Gasly, 24, had struggled to make any impression as Max Verstappen's team-mate in the first half of 2019 and was replaced by rookie Alex Albon in August last year.

"I've gone through so many emotions in the last 18 months," said the Frenchman.

He returned to Toro Rosso, this year renamed Alpha Tauri, to recover his confidence and registered a second place for the team in Brazil before the end of last season.

This year, he has improved and on Sunday delivered a result he and the team could only have dreamed of until a series of incidents – including accidents, penalties and safety cars -- threw up an unexpected opportunity.

"To be honest, I can't believe it," he said.

"I just can't realise what's happening right now. It was such a crazy race!

"We took full advantage of the red flag. The car was very fast today and we had a pretty fast car behind us.

He added: "On my first podium last year, I was already... wow. And now my first win, with AlphaTauri... and at Monza. I just can't believe it."

Gasly became the first Frenchman to win a F1 race since Olivier Panis won a rain-hit 1996 Monaco Grand Prix.

He finished first ahead of Carlos Sainz of McLaren, aged 26, and Lance Stroll of Racing Point, aged 21, in one of the youngest top-three podium finishers in modern times.

"This team has done so much for me. They have given me my first opportunity in Formula One, my first podium and now my first victory," he said.

"It is really crazy. I am so happy, I can't say enough.

"I am so grateful to everyone on the team and to Honda. It is a power circuit here at Monza -- and we won the race.

"So, it's a great day. I can't believe this happened to Alpha Tauri. We've just been focusing on ourselves and working on the car, step by step, since last year."

Jos Buttler made a dashing 77 not out as England beat Australia by six wickets for a series-clinching win in the second Twenty20 international at Southampton on Sunday.

Victory saw England take an unbeatable 2-0 lead in a three-match contest and they will replace Australia at the top of the global T20 standings with another win at Southampton on Tuesday.

England, set 158 to win, finished on 158-4 with seven balls to spare.

They needed 18 off the last two overs. Australia had failed to score 19 off two overs in a dramatic two-run defeat in the first game on Friday.

But England got there in five balls from Adam Zampa, with Moeen Ali hitting a six and a four off successive deliveries from the leg-spinner.

Buttler finished the match with a huge straight six off Zampa.

Buttler faced just 54 balls, including eight fours and two sixes, for his highest score in a T20 international, surpassing 73 not out against Sri Lanka at Southampton four years ago.

- 'Pretty comprehensive' -

Victory was set up by England's bowlers, who held Australia to a modest 157-7 after the tourists had won the toss.

"Pretty comprehensive, I can't really fault many facets of the game today," England captain Eoin Morgan told Sky Sports after the match.

"We put in a better bowling performance; we asked the guys to stand up in the first six overs and they did.

"Having a world-class player like Buttler, in form as he is, makes that chase a lot easier."

Australia captain Aaron Finch acknowledged the quality of opener Buttler's innings, saying: "When you fail to get one of the opposition openers out, who is a great player, that is always going to be tough."

Finch added: "We were probably a few runs short of where we needed to be, but I felt if we could match their powerplay with ours with the ball, we'd be in with a shot but we didn't take enough wickets in that period."

Jofra Archer had David Warner caught behind for a third-ball duck and Australia were 89-5 with seven overs left before a late-order rally gave them a glimmer of hope.

This series was meant to act as a warm-up for October's T20 World Cup in Australia.

But that tournament will not take place because of Covid-19, with the next T20 World Cup set for India in 2021.

England lost Jonny Bairstow, Buttler's opening partner, early in their chase. Swinging round from a pull off Mitchell Starc, Bairstow knocked over his stumps and was out hit wicket for 19.

But Buttler, well-supported by Dawid Malan (42) in a second-wicket stand of 87, manipulated the field in style.

He drove paceman Kane Richardson for six and skilfully reverse-swept Ashton Agar's left-arm spin for four.

England, who have struggled for powerplay wickets, made a sensational start after losing the toss when fast bowler Archer, topping 90 mph in his first over, had the dangerous Warner caught behind for nought.

Warner reviewed immediately but replays confirmed he had gloved the ball and Australia were nought for one.

Australia were 3-2 in the second over, after left-hander Alex Carey, promoted to number three in place of star batsman Steve Smith, gave himself room to drive but only edged Mark Wood, like Archer a 50-over World Cup winning fast bowler, to wicketkeeper Buttler.

Smith pulled Tom Curran for six but he was run out for 10 by England captain Eoin Morgan's underarm direct hit from midwicket with just one stump to aim at.

Frank Lampard admits expectations at Chelsea will soar after an expensive recruitment drive ahead of the new Premier League season.

The Stamford Bridge club have spent nearly £200 million ($263 million) as they have brought in on Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva, Kai Havertz and Malang Sarr and could add even more new faces.

The former Chelsea midfielder is under no illusions that owner Roman Abramovich will expect improvements on last season.

The club finished fourth in the Premier League to secure Champions League qualification in Lampard's first campaign, but lost the FA Cup final to Arsenal and were thumped 7-1 on aggregate by Bayern Munich in Europe.

"I'm very aware that a club like Chelsea, even though we had a transfer ban, even though the year was difficult, expectations are going to go up hugely," Lampard told The High Performance Podcast.

"And I just have to accept that as part of the job, and try and go about my job as well as I can."

Lampard said he expected a "messy patch" that would challenge his managerial skills, now that the honeymoon period at Chelsea was over.

Chelsea will start their Premier League campaign away at Brighton on September 14.

"I think you have to be understanding that you're coming to the messy patch," Lampard said. "I think our messy patch probably happened actually back end of the season.

"I think we achieved a lot... because nobody expected us to come in the top four. But we lost a cup final, and then we lost to Bayern Munich.

"And it's a bitter taste for me, I go away and I have a bad feel about those games.

"So I understand that those issues and problems will come again. It's just that I, and we as staff, have to double down. We have to work harder."

Gareth Southgate branded Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood "naive" after the England pair were sent home for a "serious" breach of coronavirus protocols in Iceland.

England manager Southgate responded to the breach by removing Manchester City midfielder Foden and Manchester United forward Greenwood from his squad for Tuesday's Nations League clash in Denmark.

Foden, 20, and Greenwood, 18, had made their senior England debuts in Saturday's 1-0 win against Iceland, but the pair will have to travel home separately from the rest of the squad, who were due to move on to Denmark on Monday.

Although Southgate refused to comment on the nature of the virus protocol breach, widespread media reports said the England pair met two local girls during their time in Iceland.

"Unfortunately this morning it was brought to my attention that the two boys have broken the Covid guidelines in terms of our secure bubble," Southgate told reporters.

"We had to decide they couldn't have interaction with the rest of the team and wouldn't be able to train. Given the procedures we have to follow now, they will have to travel back to England separately."

A Snapchat video released in Iceland appeared to show the players with female company.

Reports said Foden and Greenwood had brought the girls back to England's team hotel, but Southgate said that was not the case.

"Nothing has happened in the areas we occupy in the hotel. We are still getting to the depths of all the information because this was only brought to my attention a couple of hours before training, so I'm still getting to grips with the detail," he said.

"What is clear is there is a breach of the Covid-19 guidelines. I'm not gong into any more details until I'm aware of everything."

Southgate's scheduled media briefing was delayed by an hour as he and the Football Association scrambled to manage the situation, which the England boss only became aware of just hours earlier.

Acknowledging their antics were unacceptable given the current global concern about the coronavirus, Southgate said: "It is a very serious situation and we have treated it that way. They have been naive and we have dealt with it appropriately.

"We are not underestimating how important it is we keep the bubble the way we have."

- 'Totally inappropriate' -

Southgate said both players had apologised for their behaviour, but conceded they should have acted more responsibly.

"I recognise their age, but of course, the whole world is dealing with this pandemic and there is a responsibility on all ages that they do their part," he said.

"These are two boys I don't know particularly well at the moment so I cannot speak in great depth. I've got to try to speak with them later in the appropriate way.

"They have apologised but everything has happened so quickly and we have to get to the facts."

Asked if Foden and Greenwood, regarded as two of England's brightest young stars, would now face a battle to regain their place in the squad, Southgate added: "All of those things are too early, until I'm totally aware of every situation.

"I'm a father of young adults and I know they can get things wrong. We are not excusing that in this instance and we have to asses everything else moving forward."

City labelled their player's actions "totally inappropriate" and calling his behaviour "well below the standard expected of a Manchester City player".

United said of Greenwood: "We are liaising with the Football Association and are disappointed with the actions of Mason Greenwood over this situation."

The controversy was the last thing Southgate needed after he had to withdraw Harry Maguire from the squad following the Manchester United defender's part in a brawl in Greece.

Maguire was handed a suspended prison sentence and is appealing the verdict.

"All management roles are difficult and this is another level, in terms of what you have to deal and what is expected," Southgate said.

"We are not underestimating how important it is we keep the bubble the way we have." - 'Totally inappropriate' - Southgate said both players had apologised for their behaviour, but conceded they should have acted more responsibly. "I recognise their age, but of course, the whole world is dealing with this pandemic and there is a responsibility on all ages that they do their part," he said. "These are two boys I don't know particularly well at the moment so I cannot speak in great depth. I've got to try to speak with them later in the appropriate way. "They have apologised but everything has happened so quickly and we have to get to the facts." Asked if Foden and Greenwood, regarded as two of England's brightest young stars, would now face a battle to regain their place in the squad, Southgate added: "All of those things are too early, until I'm totally aware of every situation. "I'm a father of young adults and I know they can get things wrong. We are not excusing that in this instance and we have to asses everything else moving forward." City labelled their player's actions "totally inappropriate" and calling his behaviour "well below the standard expected of a Manchester City player". United said of Greenwood: "We are liaising with the Football Association and are disappointed with the actions of Mason Greenwood over this situation." The controversy was the last thing Southgate needed after he had to withdraw Harry Maguire from the squad following the Manchester United defender's part in a brawl in Greece. Maguire was handed a suspended prison sentence and is appealing the verdict. "All management roles are difficult and this is another level, in terms of what you have to deal and what is expected," Southgate said.

Lionel Messi arrived at Barcelona's training ground on Monday as he begins to reintegrate with the team following his failed attempt to leave the club this summer.

Messi was seen driving into the Ciutat Esportiva in Sant Joan Despi at just after 4:00 pm (1400 GMT) on Monday, where he is expected to take part in training for the first time under new coach Ronald Koeman.

If he has passed his coronavirus test, Messi could also begin by training alone before joining the rest of the group later in the week.

The Argentinian superstar said on Friday in his explosive interview with Goal that he would continue to give his best for Barca, despite admitting defeat in his bid to depart for free.

The 33-year-old maintained he tried to go because he "wanted to live his last years of football happily" while also blaming the club's president Josep Maria Bartomeu for "breaking his word" and forcing him to stay.

The return of Barcelona's embittered captain and greatest ever player may not be an easy one, particularly given some of his closest team-mates are likely to be absent.

Luis Suarez, Messi's best friend and neighbour, as well as Arturo Vidal, are expected to join Juventus and Inter Milan respectively.

It will also be the first time Messi has trained under Koeman, who was appointed Barca's new coach last month.

"Now I don't know what will happen," Messi said on Friday.

"There is a new coach and new ideas. That's good, but then we have to see how the team responds and whether or not it will allow us to compete at the top level. What I can say is that I'm staying and I'm going to give my best for Barcelona."

- Long-term future in doubt -

Messi's decision to notify the club via burofax that he intended to leave came after he met with Koeman, talks that reportedly involved Dutchman taking a hard line with his top striker.

Koeman said in his first press conference that he "only wanted players who want to be here and to give everything".

And Messi refused to attend either a coronavirus test or Koeman's first week of pre-season training last week, as Messi's lawyers believed his participation would harm his case in a potential legal battle with the club.

But Messi opted not to go down that route, insisting he could never go to court against "the club of my life".

Yet his long-term future remains in doubt given Messi can talk to other clubs in January and leave for free when his contract expires on June 30.

If Messi passes his coronavirus test and restarts training without problems, he could feature in Barcelona's friendly against Gimnastic Tarragona on Saturday.

A more realistic reintroduction might be against Girona four days later.

It would be the first time Messi has played for the team since their historic 8-2 defeat by Bayern Munich in last month's Champions League quarter-finals.

Barcelona have been given an extra two weeks off to recover before they start their La Liga season against Villarreal, scheduled for September 27.

Novak Djokovic on Sunday saw him get defaulted from the US Open 2020 as he declared himself “extremely sorry” for the moment of madness which saw him get disqualified from the showpiece grand slam.

Djokovic took to social media platform Instagram, hours after his mind-boggling exit in New York as the Serbian ace said he had been left “really sad and empty” by the controversy.

Djokovic 'extremely sorry' after US Open disqualification, to lose ranking points and prize money

England may have wrapped up the three-match T20I series by winning the first two matches but the number one spot in ICC T20I rankings is up for grabs in the final match of the series, to be played on Tuesday (September 8).

Jos Buttler has been in devastating form scoring 44 off 29 and an unbeaten 77 off 54 in the first two matches respectively. However, Buttler will be missing the final match of the series after being released from bio-secure bubble to be with his family.

Australian spinner Ashton Agar, ahead of the summit clash of the series, termed Buttler as England’s best white-ball player currently while saying the amount of quality he brings in the top of the order is incredible.

“Buttler is an incredible player, he can hit all around the ground, he is diffficult to bowl to, he finishes the games off, he is often there at the end taking England over the line, hats off to him, he is an incredible player. He is probably their best white-ball player currently," Agar said in a virtual press conference on Monday.

When asked about as to how difficult it is to bowl to Buttler, Agar replied: "It is tough, we know he is a gun player, there is no question about that, however, your belief in yourself can be your biggest assest or weakness, if you are the top of your mark thinking how am I going to bowl to this bloke, then you are already making the job hard for yourself. Sometims guys play really well and you need to appreciate them."

Mitchell Starc after the second T20I said that Australian players were a bit off from match intensity but Agar is of the view that the team was never rusty. The left-arm spinner, who can have an impact with the bat as well down the order, added that playing after five months was a really good feeling.

"We were never rusty, it is a really really good feeling to be playing international cricket again, we love doing that. After a long break, we have done some good things, we came close to winning both the matches, I feel like our preparation was really good and we just need to translate it into a couple of wins," he added.

IPL 2020 scheduled announced, Chennai Super Kings to face Mumbai Indians in opener

The Barbados Tridents’ stuttering defence of their Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title finally ended as they again failed to make three figures against a well-balanced Guyana Amazon Warriors attack. Early boundaries from Chandrapaul Hemraj meant Shimron Hetmyer and Ross Taylor could take the team home in cruise control, and the Amazon Warriors ended the league stage on a roll with four wins from four.

Romario Shepherd put paid to a promising start with two wickets in two balls. Charles chipped tamely to Taylor at point, but there was nothing tame about the dismissal of pinch-hitter Rashid Khan, as a fierce pull was brilliantly caught by Brandon King who ran 20 yards to his left from deep square leg and dived full-length.

Greaves survived the hat-trick ball then closed the over with a four. Brooks hit a four off Imran Tahir but fell softly to Green, albeit with Taylor taking a good catch at short midwicket, and the Tridents reached the Powerplay at 28/3. That became 28/4 the very next ball when Tahir bowled Greaves, beating him all ends up with a googly.

Kyle Mayers launched a straight Hero Maximum off Sinclair, but was undone by wrist-spin again, skying a Tahir googly to give Hemraj an easy catch at mid-off. The implosion continued as Tridents captain Jason Holder gifted Green a catch at midwicket off the second ball after the drinks break, Shepherd the bowler, and a second poor batting effort in a row by the Tridents against the Amazon Warriors left them 39/6 after 11 overs.

Mitchell Santner and Nyeem Young milked Sinclair for eight, and while Naveen went for just one on his return, Young ended a 37 ball boundary drought with a classy Hero Maximum over off Green. Santner pulled Shepherd for four, and after 15 overs the Tridents were 65/6. Sinclair ended the mini-recovery, bowling Santner with a quicker ball and celebrating by adding an extra flip or two to his post-wicket routine.

Young should have fallen to Naveen, King making good ground on the leg-side again but this time dropping the catch, but it mattered little as he soon missed a sweep off another Tahir googly and was bowled. Tahir ended his spell atop the Hero CPL wicket-takers table, and the Tridents ended the 18th over at 78/8.

Raymon Reifer pulled a Naveen slower ball through midwicket, and although the young Afghan ended wicketless he will bowl far worse spells that look better on the scorecard. Shepherd once again showed off his effective slingy yorker in the 20th over that went for just five. The innings ended with a run-out, and for the third time in Hero CPL 2020 the Tridents had failed to make three figures as a team.

Santner struck second ball of the chase, bowling King with an arm ball that in effect swung into the right-hander. A tight over from Holder ensured Hemraj started slowly, but got himself going with a powerful slog swept Hero Maximum and a whipped four off Santner. He should have fallen to the New Zealander, the usually faultless Hayden Walsh Jr dropping a catch, but he continued his attack off Rashid with two fours and a six. After four overs, the Amazon Warriors were 34/1 and the required run rate was just three and a half an over.

Holder cleverly angled the ball across Hemraj, who couldn’t resist a pull shot and was well caught by Young at third man. Sherfane Rutherford, in for the rested Keemo Paul, got a promotion to four, but lasted only three balls before edging Holder to Ashley Nurse at slip. Holder took a heavy fall but completed a wicket-maiden, leaving the Amazon Warriors 40/3 after seven overs.

Hetmyer started watchfully, his first boundary not coming till his 12th ball and that too off an edge past new keeper Charles. Pooran faced five dot balls and tried to get off the mark with a boundary, but toe-ended Reifer straight up in the air to give Brooks a simple catch at cover. Taylor joined Hetmyer with the score 49/4 and a brief to calm things down.

Young started with a chest-high full-toss that was rightly called a no-ball, and was lucky not to be called for another with the free hit, Taylor pulling a suspiciously high delivery for four. Hetmyer again edged past the keeper, and he and Taylor nudged and guided the Amazon Warriors to 67/4 at halfway needing just 23 more to win.

Holder could have ended his spell with a third wicket, but Taylor’s edge flew wide of slip, and Rashid was nudged for six off two overs to leave just 12 to win. Hetmyer finally hit his first boundary off Santner thanks to indifferent boundary fielding from the visibly injured Holder, Taylor had time to practice his forward defensive against his countryman, and Hetmyer for the second day in a row hit the winning runs.

The Tridents now hold the unwanted record of being the first Hero CPL defending champions not to make the knockouts, and with the Amazon Warriors now guaranteed to avoid the Trinbago Knight Riders in the semi-finals, a sixth final is very much on the cards.

Serena Williams continued her hunt for a record seventh US Open title with a straight-sets win on Thursday as Andy Murray crashed out in the second round at Flushing Meadows.

Williams, the tournament's third seed, dispatched unseeded Russian Margarita Gasparyan 6-2, 6-4 under the roof of a near-empty Arthur Ashe Stadium on a wet New York evening.

The 38-year-old closed out the first set with ease before a slight wobble in the second when she was broken twice by Gasparyan, before progressing into the third round.

"I'm just happy to get through it and try to focus on the next round," said Williams, who will take on 2017 champion Sloane Stephens in the last 32.

Williams is seeking a record-equalling 24th singles Grand Slam title at a subdued, spectator-free Billie Jean King US National Tennis Center in New York.

A tournament victory next week would also see her break away from Chris Evert, on six titles, as the most decorated US Open champion of the women's game in the modern era.

Williams' chances have been improved by the absence of several top players, included top-ranked Ashleigh Barty and Simona Halep, over coronavirus fears or injury.

She was handed a further boost on Wednesday when top seed Karolina Pliskova tumbled out of the tournament.

The Czech was stunned in straight sets by France's world number 50 Caroline Garcia.

Williams' American compatriot Sofia Kenin, the number two seed, continued her impressive form this year with a straightforward 6-4, 6-3 victory over Canadian Leylah Fernandez to progress into the third round.

The reigning Australian Open champion Kenin is yet to drop a set at Flushing Meadows as she bids for her second Grand Slam title of the year, and of her career.

"I feel like I found a groove. I'm really focused on every shot," said the Moscow-born player who will take on 27th seed Ons Jabeur of Tunisia in the next round.

In the men's draw Andy Murray, slumped to a 6-2, 6-3, 6-4, defeat against a dominant Felix Auger-Aliassime.

The 15th seed Canadian smashed 24 aces and 52 winners in a one-sided affair that saw Murray muster just two and nine respectively.

"I just felt like everything was coming in, my toss, my rhythm. Everything was going well through the whole match," said Felix Auger-Aliassime.

In early men's matches, second seed Dominic Thiem celebrated his 27th birthday with an easy straight-sets win against India's Sumit Nagal.

The Austrian triumphed 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 against Nagal, who became the first Indian man since 2013 to reach the second round of a Grand Slam.

Thiem will play 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic for a place in the fourth round after the Croatian advanced in four sets against Slovakia's Norbert Gombos.

"He's one of the big champions of the last decade, Thiem said of Cilic.

"It's not a guy I want to face in the third round."

Third seed and beaten finalist last year Daniil Medvedev made light work of Australia's 116th-ranked Christoper O'Connell, easing into round three 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

Elsewhere, sixth seed Italian Matteo Berrettini brushed aside France's Ugo Humbert 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) while Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut progressed against Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic.

In the women's competition Thursday, Tsvetana Pironkova, returning after a lengthy time away from the game following the birth of her son, advanced at the expense of Garbine Muguruza.

The unseeded Bulgarian knocked out the 10th Spaniard 7-5, 6-3 in 1hr 21 min.

"Coming from three year of absence on the tour, you always have your doubts. Right now my results actually make me really happy because it shows that I did the right things preparing for this comeback," said Pironkova.

Seventh seed Madison Keys of the USA also progressed, making light work of Spain's Aliona Bolsova 6-2, 6-1, while Stephens easily overcame Belarusian Olga Govortsova 6-2, 6-2.

British ninth seed Jo Konta became another high-ranking woman to be sent packing, losing in three sets to Romania's Sorana Cirstea after going a set ahead.

Lionel Messi on Friday confirmed that he will continue his stay at Barcelona as he said that he doesn’t want to take the club he loves to the court. Messi, in an emotional interview, expressed how emotional was it when he told his wife and children that he wants to leave Barcelona.

Messi, earlier last week, had sent a burofax to Barcelona while requesting them to let him leave for free, as per a clause in his contract. However, Barcelona were adamant that the clause has expired and any club wanting to acquire Messi’s services will have to pay EUR 700 million release clause.

“When I communicated my wish to leave to my wife and children, it was a brutal drama,” Messi told Goal.

“The whole family began crying, my children did not want to leave Barcelona, nor did they want to change schools.

“But I looked further afield and I want to compete at the highest level, win titles, compete in the Champions League. You can win or lose in it, because it is very difficult, but you have to compete.

“At least compete for it and let us not fall apart in Rome, Liverpool, Lisbon. All that led me to think about that decision that I wanted to carry out.”

Messi further said that Barcelona president always said that he can leave anytime he wanted but now they made a u-turn that the contract clause that allows him to leave expired on June 10.

“I thought and was sure that I was free to leave, the president always said that at the end of the season I could decide if I stayed or not,” he said.

“Now they cling to the fact that I did not say it before June 10, when it turns out that on June 10 we were competing for La Liga in the middle of this awful coronavirus and this disease altered all the season.

“And this is the reason why I am going to continue in the club. Now I am going to continue in the club because the president told me that the only way to leave was to pay the €700 million (£624m/$823m) clause, and that this is impossible.”

Messi said he could have gone to court and find a way out of the club but reiterated that he loves this club for everything it has given to him and will never take Barcelona to court.

“There was another way and it was to go to trial," he added. “I would never go to court against Barca because it is the club that I love, which gave me everything since I arrived.

“It is the club of my life, I have made my life here.

“Barca gave me everything and I gave it everything. I know that it never crossed my mind to take Barca to court.”

The six-time Ballon d’Or further explained how his family reacted upon hearing that he wanted to leave Barcelona for a new club.

“Mateo is still little and he doesn't realise what it means to go somewhere else and make your life a few years elsewhere,” he said.

“Thiago, he is older. He heard something on TV and found out something and asked.

“I didn't want him to know anything about being forced to leave, to have to live in a new school, or make new friends.

“He cried to me and said ‘let's not go’. I repeat that it was hard, really.

“It was understandable. It happened to me. It is very difficult to make a decision.

“I love Barcelona and I'm not going to find a better place than here anywhere. Still, I have the right to decide. I was going to look for new goals and new challenges. And tomorrow I could go back, because here in Barcelona I have everything.

“My son, my family, they grew up here and are from here. There was nothing wrong with wanting to leave. I needed it, the club needed it and it was good for everyone.

“My wife, with all the pain of her soul, supported and accompanied me.”

Messi will now resume training for Ronald Koeman’s Barcelona as the club looks for a new chapter under a new manager.

'Emotional' Lionel Messi confirms he will stay at Barcelona

Lewis Hamilton on Thursday urged people to continue discussing their mental health and said, based on his personal experience, that it was a strength and not a weakness for people to show their vulnerability.

The championship leader and six-time world champion said he experienced "difficult days" in his own life, explaining that this season's run of triple-header race weekends meant that he was often lonely and grateful for contact from his family.

"I think I'm managing," he told reporters at the Italian Grand Prix.

"I've got a great group of people around me. I think Covid's given me the time to focus on communication and improving that between family and getting a deeper relationship with my mum, getting a deeper relationship with my dad, my brother, my sister and those that I work with."

In a post on social media, Hamilton said: "There are two sides to me. First, the one you see on TV -- the competitive, cut-throat, hungry racer in me that comes out when I close the visor.

"When the visor is down I come alive, all my fears, insecurities and doubts are cast aside and my focus kicks in and will not break until the job is done. It feels like I get to have the superpowers I always dreamed of having, but behind the wheel.

"Second, there's just me. Someone who is figuring life out, day by day, just like you."

"Like many of you, I'm just trying to be and do my best in everything. I also have a lot of difficult days….especially in the bubble that we're currently in.

"You get lonely, you miss your friends and family, and with back to back race weeks it means there's not much time for anything, but work.

"I guess what I'm trying to say is it's never a bad thing to ask for help if you need it or to tell somebody how you feel. Showing your vulnerable side doesn't make you weak. Instead, I like to think of it as a chance to become stronger."

Hamilton is only two wins short of equalling Michael Schumacher's record haul of 91 race wins as he heads towards his record-equalling seventh title.

He said he believed it was important that he was open and expressed himself.

"I think as competitors, it's not the first thing you think about doing, being open and expressing yourself, but I think it's very important, more important than what's happening here."

"We arrive -- and you're on TV for three days and it all looks pretty good, but the fact is you only see the tip of the iceberg. There's all the stuff that goes on in the background.

"So that's what I was trying to convey -- that's its ok to have the difficult days, they're the growing days."

England are set to lock horns with Australia in the three-match T20I series opener at the Rose Bowl in Southampton Friday. England and Australia possess world-class squads with the series likely to be a close contest between two of the best sides in the world.

The three-match T20I series will be played behind closed doors in Southampton but one thing for sure, this series will be full of nail-biting action given that two sides match each other in terms of quality in both batting and bowling department.

While England have already played against the West Indies, Ireland and Pakistan, Australia will resume cricketing services after a break of around six months, which could ultimately be the difference. However, Australian players looked in top form in their two intra-squad warm-up matches where the likes of Marnus Labuschagne and Glenn Maxwell slammed centuries.

It will be interesting to see the approach of both England and Australia with the series expected to be a closely-fought affair.

La Liga on Friday issues a counter-statement after Lionel Messi’s letter, via his father and agent Jorge Messi, put out a letter. La Liga contradicting to what Messi had said in his letter, stated that the EUR 700 million release clause still exists and the Spanish governing body stands by its earlier statement where they had mentioned the same.

Lionel Messi on Friday issued a statement, addressed to La Liga boss Javier Tebas, stating that the EUR 700 million release clause doesn’t exist in his contract while criticizing La Liga’s ‘partial’ stance after they released a statement in support of Barcelona.

La Liga hits back at Lionel Messi, says 'release clause still exists'

Lionel Messi on Friday issued a scathing statement via his father and agent Jorge Messi, addressed to La Liga boss Javier Tebas, stating that the EUR 700 million release clause doesn’t exist in Messi’s contract while criticizing La Liga’s ‘partial’ stance after they released a statement in support of Barcelona.

The statement issued by Jorge on behalf of his son Lionel, said La Liga has been partial in analyzing Messi’s contract and added they are baffled that the league said there will be legal ramification if the ‘termination clause’ is triggered at the end of 2019-20 season. The statement added that there is no release clause in Messi’s contract if the player wants to terminate the contract and walk out free at the end of 2019-20 season.
