Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne has been named PFA Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. The Belgian midfielder has retained the award following another outstanding campaign in which he claimed his third Premier League title and fifth Carabao Cup during his time in Manchester. <o:p></o:p>

Whereas, Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has been named PFA Young Player of the Year. The 21-year-old becomes the fourth City player to win the prestigious award, following in the footsteps of Peter Barnes, Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling. He was also one of four City players shortlisted for the PFA’s senior award and was only yesterday named the Premier League’s Young Player of the Season.<o:p></o:p>

Voted for by his fellow professionals, De Bruyne’s 10 goals and 18 assists played a crucial role in the Cityzens’ double-winning season and also led them to a first UEFA Champions League final in the Club’s history. <o:p></o:p>

The 29-year-old, who pledged four more years to the Club by signing a new contract in April, fought off competition from a trio of City teammates to secure the award. <o:p></o:p>

Phil Foden, Ilkay Gundogan and Ruben Dias were also shortlisted for the prestigious award, alongside Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes and Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane.

Red Bull's Sergio Perez won a chaotic Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Sunday with both Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton failing to finish.

Sebastian Vettel for Aston Martin and Pierre Gasly for Alpha Tauri completed the unexpected podium.

Verstappen crashed with five laps to go and the race at his mercy. Hamilton then locked up at the restart when on target for second.

The drama on the streets of Baku left Verstappen retaining the lead in the drivers standings.

This was the first win for Perez since joining Red Bull.

Perez said: "I'm so happy for today. Normally Baku is pretty crazy but I have to say sorry to Max.&nbsp;

"He deserved the win today and it would have been good for the team to get a 1-2 but the win is a fantastic result.

He inherited the lead when his teammate Verstappen's left rear tyre shredded triggering a high-speed crash in the straight as he was set to cash in on his second straight win and third of the season.

"Tyre," shouted a distraught Verstappen on the team radio.

After a red-flag stoppage lasting over half an hour to clear debris from Verstappen's stricken car the grand prix resumed with a two lap sprint to the chequered flag.

Hamilton looked to have the measure of Perez but spun off at turn one leaving Perez to collect an unlikely win.

Pole-sitter Charles Leclerc came in fifth and Hamilton out of the points like Verstappen in 15th.

Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has echoed Ravi Shastri’s comments that the final of the World Test Championship should have been a three-match affair rather than being a one-off Test to decide the winner in the longest format of the game. India take on New Zealand in the summit clash of WTC in Southampton, starting from June 18.<o:p></o:p>

Further highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of the Indian team, Yuvraj said the openers will have to step up to the challenges of playing in English conditions against the Dukes&nbsp;ball. <o:p></o:p>

"Rohit Sharma is very experienced now in Test matches. He has almost 7 hundreds, 4 hundreds as opener. But both Rohit and Shubman Gill have not opened in England ever," Yuvraj told Sports Tak.<o:p></o:p>

"They know the challenge, the Dukes Ball swings early. They have to get used to the conditions quickly. In England, it's important to take it one session at a time. In the morning, the ball swings and seams, in the afternoon you can score runs, after Tea, it swings again. As a batsman, if you can adapt to these things, you can be successful.

Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has disagreed with Ian Chappell’s comments where he termed Ravichandran Ashwin as an “all-time great”. Opining on the matter, Manjrekar said he has a problem with people terming Ashwin as an all-time great while adding that the veteran Indian spinner doesn’t have a five-wicket haul at SENA countries.<o:p></o:p>

Manjrekar, while citing Ashwin’s overseas record, said that even the likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel have performed well in Indian conditions.

“One basic problem I have with Ashwin is that when you look at SENA countries, Ashwin doesn’t have a single five-wicket haul there. And the other thing when you talk about him running through sides on Indian pitches that are suited to his kind of bowling is that in the last four years, Jadeja has matched him with wicket-taking abilities. Then, interestingly, in the last series against England, Axar Patel got more wickets than Ashwin on similar pitches. So that is my problem with accepting Ashwin as a real all-time great,” Manjrekar said<o:p></o:p>

However, Chappell added that it is like being Joel Garner whose “wickets are shared around” while being surrounded by great bowlers. But Manjrekar’s comments did attract a lot of criticism on social media.

Legendary former Indian cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar reckons that the lack of preparation heading into the ICC World Test Championship final “may hurt” the Indian cricket team. Vengsarkar’s comments come after Kohli, in the pre-departure press conference, said that lack of practice is not a big worry for the team. <o:p></o:p>

While India are undergoing quarantine in Southampton, New Zealand are taking on England in a two-Test series before the World Test Championship final. Opining on the matter, Vengsarkar said that despite Kohli and Rohit being world-class players, the lack of matches in the build-up to the event could hamper their performance in the WTC final. <o:p></o:p>

"Well he (Kohli) has been around for a long time. He (Kohli) is one of the best batsmen in world cricket at the moment. Players like Virat or Rohit Sharma, they are world-class players, they take a lot of pride in their performance and pride in winning matches for India," Vengsarkar, the former chairman of selectors, told PTI on Sunday. <o:p></o:p>

"It is a good thing and both are in very good form. But having said that, I think lack of match practice may hurt them in the first Test match that is what I feel," Vengsarkar said.

Vengsarkar further said that the two-Test series against England will give a perfect opportunity for the Black Caps to gear up for the much-awaited WTC final. <o:p></o:p>

"India is a better team and in great form. The advantage with New Zealand, it is a low profile team, the thing is that they are getting to play two Test matches before the Test match (World Test Championship final)," Vengsarkar said.

Legendary former Indian cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar reckons that the lack of preparation heading into the ICC World Test Championship final “may hurt” the Indian cricket team.

"It is a good thing and both are in very good form. But having said that, I think lack of match practice may hurt them in the first Test match that is what I feel," Vengsarkar said. "India is a better team and in great form. The advantage with New Zealand, it is a low profile team, the thing is that they are getting to play two Test matches before the Test match (World Test Championship final)," Vengsarkar said. Former New Zealand head coach Mike Hesson is expecting the upcoming World Test Championship final between India and New Zealand to be an equal contest. India take on New Zealand in a high-octane final of the World Test Championship at the Rose Bowl in Southampton, starting from June 18.<o:p></o:p>

Hesson reckons that it will be an exciting game between the two top sides in the longest format of the game while adding no injury concerns for both the teams will make it a worthwhile watch for the fans.<o:p></o:p>

"They are even. The fact that it’s being played at a neutral venue also makes the WTC final an even contest. I think both sides are going to be at their strongest, which is great. Assuming there are no injuries in the next couple of weeks, both sides will be at full strength and we are in for an exciting Test," the former New Zealand coach told TimesofIndia.com.

Comparing the two, Hesson said that Williamson is a slow-burn, who will seek a perfect time to put pressure on the opponent while Kohli wants to attack from the word go. <o:p></o:p>

"Both are very good leaders and yes, both are different in their style of captaincy. Kane is more of a slow-burn in the sense that he likes to put pressure over a period of time. Virat, on the other hand, is constantly looking for ways to put his side in the driver’s seat. The WTC final will be a test of captaincy for both Kane and Virat. As the wicket changes from day to day, it will be interesting to see how both Kane and Virat make those little tweaks in their strategies to stay ahead," Hesson said.

Manchester City has won a trio of prizes at the end of season Premier League awards. Manager Pep Guardiola has won his third Premier League Manager of the Season award as he led his side to their third Premier League title in four seasons.

The Catalan, who was also named LMA Manager of the Year last month, beat Marcelo Bielsa, David Moyes, Brendan Rodgers and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to the award, in a season where his team finished 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

Just weeks after collecting the FWA Player of the Year Award, Ruben Dias has been named Premier League Player of the Season. Signed from Benfica last summer, the Portuguese international has had an outstanding impact in his first season in England.

City kept 15 clean sheets in Dias’ 32 league appearances as they secured the meanest defence in the division. This is the defender’s third accolade of the summer having also received FWA recognition and been named the Club’s Etihad Player of the Season. Phil Foden completed the sweep of honours, by being named Premier League Young Player of the Season.

The City Academy graduate has had a season to remember for his boyhood club, adding a third Premier League and fourth Carabao Cup medal to his collection, as well as starting in the Club’s first ever UEFA Champions League final. New Zealand's Devon Conway joined a select group of cricketers on Wednesday by marking his Test debut with a hundred at Lord's.

The South Africa-born opener found himself thrust into the action straight away after New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and batted in the first of a two-match series against England.

But while star batsman Williamson and the experienced Ross Taylor both fell cheaply, the 29-year-old Conway pressed on to a 163-ball century, reaching the landmark with a flamboyant whipped legside four, his 11th boundary, off England debutant fast bowler Ollie Robinson.

At stumps, Conway had made an unbeaten 136 in a total of 246-3, having shared an unbroken partnership of 132 with fellow left-hander Henry Nicholls (46 not out).

Only five other batsmen had previously scored a Test debut hundred at Lord's, with Conway the first New Zealand international to achieve the feat.

World number one and former champion Ashleigh Barty limped out of Roland Garros on Thursday, throwing the battle for the women's title wide open as Rafael Nadal prepared to celebrate his 35th birthday inside an empty stadium.

Top seed Barty, already suffering from a left hip injury, retired injured midway through the second set of her second-round match against Poland's 45th-ranked Magda Linette.

The Australian, who won the title on her last visit to Roland Garros in 2019, left the court for medical treatment after losing the first set 6-1.

She then called it quits at 2-2 in the second set on Court Philippe Chatrier.

"It's heartbreaking," Barty said. "It's a miracle I got past the first round."

"We did absolutely everything we could to give myself a chance. It sucks."

The 25-year-old's withdrawal leaves the tournament already without the world's top three-ranked women's players.

World number two Naomi Osaka pulled out following a media boycott, saying she has suffered "bouts of depression" for three years.

Third-ranked Simona Halep, the 2018 French Open winner, withdrew before the event with injury.

That leaves world number four Aryna Sabalenka as the top remaining player in the draw.

Linette goes on to face Ons Jabeur, the Tunisian 25th seed who eased past Australian wild card Astra Sharma 6-2, 6-4.

Fourth seed Sofia Kenin, the 2020 runner-up, saw off American compatriot Hailey Baptiste 7-5, 6-3.

Three-time quarter-finalist and fifth seed Elina Svitolina was similarly untroubled against Ann Li of the United States, winning 6-0, 6-4.

However, ninth seed Karolina Pliskova exited at the hands of 2018 runner-up Sloane Stephens as the 59th-ranked American won 7-5, 6-1.

&nbsp;

<h2>- Nadal dominant -</h2>

&nbsp;

World number three Nadal, bidding for a 14th French Open and record-setting 21st Grand Slam title, faces Richard Gasquet, a player he first met when they were 12 years old.

However, schedulers have handed the Spaniard the evening session, leaving his 35th birthday party celebrations a little flat as the match clashes with a 9pm Covid-19 curfew and a spectator ban.

Gasquet won his first junior clash against Nadal at the Petits As tournament in France in 1999.

Sadly for him, that was as good as it would ever get.

On the ATP Tour, Nadal has monopolised their head-to-head and leads 16-0.

"I don't have many French Opens left to play so I want to make the most of it," said Gasquet who made his debut at the tournament back in 2002.

Gael Monfils' 6-0, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 defeat by Mikel Ymer of Sweden means Gasquet would have to beat Nadal to avoid the hosts suffering their worst year in men's singles since 1968.

Roger Federer, also the winner of 20 Slams, renews his rivalry with Marin Cilic.

The Swiss star leads their head-to-head 9-1 with Cilic's only win coming in the semi-finals of the 2014 US Open when he went on to claim his only Grand Slam title.

Federer, the 2009 champion in Paris, made the second round with a straight sets win against Uzbek qualifier Denis Istomin.

It was just his second win in 2021 and first at a major since losing to Novak Djokovic in the 2020 Australian Open semi-finals.

Top seed and world number one Djokovic is also in a battle of the over 30s as he faces Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas.

Djokovic, the 2016 champion, is bidding to become the first man in more than half a century to win all four Slams more than once.

<h2>- Alcaraz record -</h2>

At the other end of the spectrum is 18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz who on Monday became the youngest player to win a match at Roland Garros since Djokovic in 2005.

If the Spaniard beats 28th seed Nikoloz Basilashvili, he will be the youngest man to reach the French Open last 32 since Andrei Medvedev in 1992.

Two Italian teens made it through with 18th seeded Jannik Sinner seeing off compatriot Gianluca Mager while highly-rated Lorenzo Musetti put out Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka.

Defending women's champion Iga Swiatek takes on Sweden's Rebecca Peterson.

Swiatek has hit with Nadal this week, a meeting which made her so nervous that the Pole prepared a list of helpful conversation starters should she get tongue-tied.

Tennis: Barty limps out of French Open as Nadal set for lonely 35th birthday

New Zealand opener Devon Conway made exactly 200 on Test debut before England slumped to 25-2 on the second day of the series opener at Lord's on Thursday.

Conway was last man out in a first-innings total of 378 on the second day of this two-match series.

The South Africa-born left-hander was in sight of becoming the very first batsman in the 144-year history of Test cricket to carry their bat -- bat throughout the entire innings -- in their first knock in the format when he was run out to end a stay of more than nine-and-a-half hours.

Nevertheless, it needed a review of a close call before it was confirmed that England captain Joe Root had taken the bails off in time.

Even so, Conway was only the seventh batsman to make a double hundred on Test debut.

He faced 347 balls, with 22 fours and went to 200 in style when he hooked fast bowler Mark Wood for the only six of his innings.

New Zealand No 11 Neil Wagner, also born in South Africa, made 25 not out off 21 balls that included a superb straight six off Stuart Broad during an entertaining last-wicket stand of 40.&nbsp;

Sussex paceman Ollie Robinson, like Conway making his Test debut, led England's attack with four wickets for 75 runs in 28 overs.

But New Zealand, who face India in the inaugural World Test Championship final at Southampton later this month, then struck twice with the ball themselves.

Towering paceman Kyle Jamieson had Dom Sibley lbw for a duck with a ball that straightened to hit the opener on the back pad, the decision upheld on 'umpire's call' after a review.

But there was no room for doubt when Zak Crawley was caught behind off Tim Southee for two.

At tea, Rory Burns was 15 not out and star batsman Root unbeaten on seven, with England 353 runs behind.

New Zealand resumed on 246-3, with Conway 136 not out after Black Caps skipper Kane Williamson had won the toss.

But they lost four wickets for just six runs as they slumped from 288-3 to 294-7.

Conway shared a fourth-wicket stand of 174 with Henry Nicholls before his fellow left-hander was caught holed out to long leg off Wood for 61 by England debutant Ollie Robinson to spark the collapse

It was a welcome moment for Robinson, who found himself having to apologise after play on Wednesday when racist and sexist tweets he had first posted as a teenager were published again.

Wood then removed BJ Watling for just one, with the aid of a sharp slip catch by Sibley.

Fellow seamer Robinson, who took two wickets on Wednesday, then had Colin de Grandhomme lbw for nought on review, with Mitchell Santner also out for a duck when he chipped Wood to mid-off.

Robinson, however, was deprived of a place on the Lord's honours board when Broad dropped Southee at mid-off to deny him a fifth wicket.

Cricket: New Zealand's Conway makes debut double century before England collapse

There have been many debates around the participation of overseas players in the second phase of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, set to commence in September in the United Arab Emirates. While the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) have already said that it is unlikely that their players will participate in IPL 2021, there are question marks on the participation of Australian players as well. <o:p></o:p>

Kolkata Knight Riders will be hit hard if England and Australia players don’t return for IPL 2021 with two crucial players in captain Eoin Morgan and key bowler Pat Cummins. In case Morgan doesn’t return for IPL 2021, former KKR captain Dinesh Karthik has said that he is ready to take the charge if the management asks him to do so.

Speaking to The Times of India, Karthik said: "Pat Cummins has himself said that he will not come. But when it comes to Eoin Morgan, there are still three months to go. A lot can change from now till September. But if I am asked to lead, I will be ready for it.”<o:p></o:p>

KKR struggled during Karthik’s captaincy and the India international decided to step down from captaincy to focus on his batting. However, the two-time IPL winners have continued to disappoint under the leadership of World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan as well.

In IPL 2019 and 2020, KKR lost out on playoff spot due to net run-rate but will look to turn things around when the 14th edition resumes in the UAE. <o:p></o:p>

There have been many debates around the participation of overseas players in the second phase of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, set to commence in September in the United Arab Emirates.

ALSO READ: Tokyo 2020: PM Narendra Modi directs officials to vaccinate athletes 'on top priority' Speaking to The Times of India, Karthik said: "Pat Cummins has himself said that he will not come. But when it comes to Eoin Morgan, there are still three months to go. A lot can change from now till September. But if I am asked to lead, I will be ready for it.” KKR struggled during Karthik’s captaincy and the India international decided to step down from captaincy to focus on his batting. However, the two-time IPL winners have continued to disappoint under the leadership of World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan as well. Among LaLiga’s most impressive rising stars is Brazilian right-back Emerson, who has just confirmed his long-awaited move to FC Barcelona from Real Betis.

Emerson may have only turned 22 last January, but with four goals and ten assists across the last two seasons in green and white, he has an excellent claim to be perhaps the most productive attack-minded defender in LaLiga.

Born in Sao Paulo in January 1999, Emerson gained his first football education at local side Ponte Preta, before moving to giants Atletico Mineiro while still a teenager. Regular appearances in Brazil’s Serie A brought interest from many European clubs, and he made the leap to join Real Betis in January 2019.

Emerson was gradually introduced into the Real Betis first team set up by then-coach Quique Setien, with one of his first three LaLiga starts coming in the pressure-cooker atmosphere of the city derby at Sevilla’s Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan. Having settled well in the Andalusian capital, and with a good pre-season behind him, Emerson was the automatic first-choice right-back in time for the 2019/20 season.

Emerson’s potential has also been quickly spotted by Brazil’s national teams. He featured regularly throughout 2019’s South American Under-20 championships and could well have represented his country at the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan but for postponement due to COVID-19. Already a senior international, he looks set to form a long-term partnership on either side of the Brazil back four with Atletico Madrid left-back Renan Lodi, who has also broken into the set-up at the same time.

The athletic and intelligent Emerson's attack-minded contributions from right-back have brought to mind another Brazilian who first made his LaLiga mark in the Andalusian capital, and he now follows in Dani Alves’ footsteps by joining Barcelona this coming season. Given how he has settled in Spain so far, it would be no surprise to see the rising star becoming the starting right-back at the Camp Nou over the next decade.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has said that it won’t be surprising if England prepare green tracks for India in the upcoming five-Test series against India, scheduled to commence from August 4, after the conclusion of the ICC World Test Championship final. <o:p></o:p>

Gavaskar, while recalling the criticism of Indian pitches when England visited India earlier in the year, said there was a lot of “moaning” about the tracks during the four-Test series, played in Chennai and Ahmedabad. <o:p></o:p>

"Having moaned about the pitches in India earlier this year, it won't be a surprise if the groundsman in England leaves a little grass on the surface,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for The Telegraph.<o:p></o:p>

However, the legendary Indian cricketer added that grassy pitches will no longer bother Virat Kohli and Co due to the quality of pace bowlers in the set-up while further saying that India have the bowling attack to give “problems” to the hosts. <o:p></o:p>

“That is no longer a worry as India have an attack that will also thrive on it and cause problems for the England batsmen too," Gavaskar added.

Gavaskar further opined that the gap of 40 days between the WTC final and England Test series will allow India to prepare enough for the five-match rubber by playing some practice matches. <o:p></o:p>

"The summer in England promises to be the golden summer of Indian cricket. After the WTC finals, there is a gap of about six weeks before the Test series starts against England and that should be enough for the team to play some practice games and tune-up for what England can hurl at them,” he wrote.

West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell has said that the bio-bubble life has “definitely taken a toll” on him because of the strict restrictions and quarantine rules imposed on participating players and staff in T20 tournaments and international series. <o:p></o:p>

Russell, who was last seen playing for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2021, is gearing up for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in the UAE, which is likely to resume on June 7. However, moving from one bubble to another has taken a mental toll on Russell as he said that players not being able to go out for a walk and being locked inside a room doesn’t help. <o:p></o:p>

"I think it's taking a toll on myself," Russell told Geo News.<o:p></o:p>

"I can't talk for any other player, or coaches or anyone that goes through this whole quarantine stuff. But it's definitely taken a toll on me mentally because from bubble to bubble, in a room locked in, you can't go out for a walk, you can't go certain places, you can't socialise, it's different.<o:p></o:p>

"But at the end of the day, I'm not being ungrateful, I'm grateful that we're still playing, we're still doing our job. So it's tough for us. But even though we prepared for it, it still takes a toll."

Indian head coach Ravi Shastri on Wednesday said that two Indian squads travelling to different venues at the same time for two different series could become a norm in the draining world of bio-secure bubbles wherein the cricketers are forced to live amid COVID-19 pandemic.<o:p></o:p>

“Playing with two squads in different locations regularly is a possibility in the long run,” Shastri said in the pre-departure press conference.<o:p></o:p>

The Virat Kohli-led Indian team is set to depart for their tour of the UK where they will play the ICC World Test Championship final before locking horns with England for a five-Test series. At the same time, the second-string Indian team will play Sri Lanka in a limited-overs series in July. <o:p></o:p>

However, Shastri said that playing two different teams could also help T20 cricket to spread across the globe.

Furthermore, captain Virat Kohli also echoed Shastri’s opinion as he said that playing regular cricket with quarantine and bio-bubble restriction in place, is a tough ask on players as it is difficult for them to stay motivated and find the right kind of mental space.

India head coach Ravi Shastri on Wednesday said that the ICC World Test Championship should have been a best of three contest going forward and not a one-off match like the upcoming India versus New Zealand match in the inaugural edition of the tournament. Former India captain and one of the legends of the game, Sunil Gavaskar has named one batsman he would love to play like in modern cricket. The introduction of T20 cricket and its evolution has changed the way modern-day batters think about the game while finding unique shots to score runs. <o:p></o:p>

Gavaskar opined that he gets excited whenever he watches a T20 match as it brings quick results into the play while adding he jumps out of his chair whenever someone plays an unorthodox shot. <o:p></o:p>

“I know a lot of who played around my time, they’re not happy with the T20 format, but I actually love it. I love it for a simple reason that you know it’s a 3-hour game, and you get a result, and you get to see so much of action,” said Gavaskar on The Analyst Inside podcast.<o:p></o:p>

“When somebody plays the switch hit and the reverse sweep, I’m out of my chair because I think those are fabulous and incredible shots, and it takes a lot of skill to be able to hit them for sixes,” explained the 71-year-old.

“AB de Villiers, bat like him, you know 360 degrees, play everything. I mean, just make it look as if you’re having a net. He makes it look so simple. He hits a fair distance, and he is very elegant as well. When he hits some of those shots, I love how his bat’s follow-through goes right over the shoulder. The introduction of T20 cricket and its evolution has changed the way modern-day batters think about the game while finding unique shots to score runs. Gavaskar opined that he gets excited whenever he watches a T20 match as it brings quick results into the play while adding he jumps out of his chair whenever someone plays an unorthodox shot. “I know a lot of who played around my time, they’re not happy with the T20 format, but I actually love it. I love it for a simple reason that you know it’s a 3-hour game, and you get a result, and you get to see so much of action,” said Gavaskar on The Analyst Inside podcast. “When somebody plays the switch hit and the reverse sweep, I’m out of my chair because I think those are fabulous and incredible shots, and it takes a lot of skill to be able to hit them for sixes,” explained the 71-year-old. Japan's Olympic minister Seiko Hashimoto became Tokyo 2020's new president on Thursday, capping an embarrassing sexism row with just over five months until the virus-postponed Games.

Hashimoto, a seven-time Olympian who competed in speed skating and as a sprint cyclist, was one of just two women in Japan's cabinet before stepping down to take the key post.

She replaces 83-year-old Yoshiro Mori, who resigned after claiming that women speak too much in meetings, sparking outcry in Japan and abroad.

"I will spare no effort for the success of the Tokyo Games," Hashimoto said after being formally appointed, calling virus countermeasures "the top priority."

She pledged to work to "ensure that the public both domestically and abroad feel this is going to be a safe and secure Olympic Games."

Hashimoto submitted her resignation earlier Thursday to Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, who she said had offered "kind words", and asked her to "give all my strength to create a Tokyo Games that will be embraced by the Japanese people."

A committee with a 50-50 gender split was formed to find a successor to Mori last week, with Hashimoto immediately among the leading candidates.

Tokyo 2020's executive board met earlier Thursday to hear the results of the committee's deliberations with 2020 vice-president Toshiaki Endo saying a quick decision was needed.

Mori's departure was "enormously damaging from the viewpoint of preparation five months before the Games," Endo said.

"We need to make a decision on the new president as soon as possible, though it is necessary that it goes through appropriate procedures, given the issue has attracted attention at home and abroad," he added.

<h2>- Uphill struggle for public support -</h2>

Hashimoto, 56, appeared at both winter and summer Games and was also serving as minister for gender equality and women's empowerment.

But she has been involved in controversy, facing a sexual harassment scandal in 2014 after photos emerged of her hugging and kissing a male figure skater over 20 years her junior.

The skater said he did not think he had been harassed by the married Hashimoto, who apologised for any "misunderstanding" caused by the photos.

Keiko Kojima, an essayist and commentator on gender issues in Japan, said Hashimoto would need to address that controversy head-on.

"If she properly addresses that and her thoughts on gender equality as she takes up the post, then I think it will be fine," Kojima told AFP.

Hashimoto's nomination comes after Mori's attempt to handpick his successor -- he proposed an 84-year-old ex-footballer -- was nixed following public criticism.

Kojima said the process that resulted in Hashimoto's selection had been transparent and "worthy of praise".

The former minister had reportedly been reluctant to take on the job, and she will face an uphill struggle to win over the public on the Games, which are due to open on July 23.

Polls show around 80 percent of people in Japan back either cancellation or further postponement.

Organisers have tried to quell the disquiet by releasing virus rulebooks -- but doubts persist, with Tokyo and other regions currently under a Covid-19 state of emergency.

The first Olympic test event of 2021 has already been postponed because of tightened border restrictions under the measures.

"There are only five months to go, and putting on a safe and secure Games is going to be of utmost importance, with the understanding of the people of Japan," Endo said earlier Thursday.

Ex-Tokyo 2020 chief Mori, a former prime minister, resigned after domestic and international outcry over remarks he made in early February to members of the Japanese Olympic Committee.

He apologised for the sexist remarks, while insisting he was repeating complaints made by others, but then dug a deeper hole when he explained that he "doesn't speak to women much".

Tokyo Olympics fans may have to be vaccinated or test negative for the coronavirus before being allowed into venues, a Japanese newspaper report said Monday.

Cheering, eating, high-fives and drinking alcohol would also be banned under controls now being considered, the Yomiuri Shimbun daily said, citing unnamed government officials.

Organisers are set to decide in June how many spectators -- if any -- will be allowed to attend the pandemic-postponed Games.

Overseas fans are already barred, and the report warned domestic spectators may be denied entrance or kicked out for breaking the rules.

"The plan is to stop the spread of infections during Games time with strict countermeasures," the paper said.

Under the plan, spectators must be able to show a vaccination certificate or a negative test taken at their own expense less than a week before entering the venue.

They must wear masks and fill in health-check sheets, and once inside must not cheer loudly or high-five each other.

Security guards would be stationed around venues monitoring behaviour, the report said, with public viewing venues cancelled or scaled down.

Japan's vaccine rollout has been moving slowly, with less than 2.5 percent of the population fully vaccinated so far.

Tokyo and other parts of the country are under a virus state of emergency which was extended on Friday until June 20, just over a month before the opening ceremony on July 23.

The Yomiuri also published a new poll on Monday that shows 49 percent of people living in Tokyo want the Games to go ahead, while 48 percent want them cancelled.

A total of 25 percent said they wanted the Games to go ahead with a limited number of spectators, while 24 percent said they wanted them to be held with no fans.

A new country-wide poll by the Nikkei newspaper found that 62 percent of respondents wanted the Games to be cancelled or postponed again, while 34 percent were in favour of them being held this summer.

Organisers have repeatedly ruled out the Games being postponed again.

Tokyo Olympics fans to need vaccination or virus test: report

Tokyo 2020 chief Yoshiro Mori on Tuesday said that the postponed Olympics will happen "however coronavirus evolves", reported AFP. Mori's comments come after Paralympics chief Andrew Parsons as the latter said that he is confident that the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Games will go ahead as scheduled and will be&nbsp;"a platform to change to world" -- with or without spectators.

"We'll certainly go ahead however the coronavirus (pandemic) evolves," he told a meeting of Olympic organisers and members of Japan's ruling party in Tokyo.&nbsp;

"We must go beyond discussion about whether we will hold it or not. It's about how we will do it. Let's think about a new kind of Olympics on this occasion," he added.

There have been dark clouds hovering over the postponed Games but the organisers are optimistic that the quadrennial event will go ahead without a hitch. The organisers have repeatedly said that Tokyo Olympics 2020 will go ahead as scheduled but question marks remain over whether crowds will be allowed or not amid the pandemic.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga on Tuesday told the steering committee of the lower house of parliament the government intends to extend the state of emergency in 10 prefectures, including Tokyo, by one month through March 7.

Stringent border restrictions imposed after COVID-19 infections spike have already forced the postponement of some sporting fixtures including 2021's first Olympic test event, which was scheduled for March.

The nationwide Olympic torch relay is still due to begin on March 25.

The Tokyo 2020 organisers are expected to chalk out further details of their extensive COVID-19 countermeasures that they have devised for the Games. However, the majority of the public have opposed to holding the Games this year. A total of 80 per cent of Japanese people&nbsp;asked in a January survey backing either further postponement or a cancellation.

Organisers have said neither of those options are on the table, and have received strong support from both the International Olympic Committee and athletes around the world.
