Japanese dynamo Naomi Osaka punched her ticket to the Indian Wells final on Friday, routing world No. 1 Simona Halep to set up a title clash with rising star Daria Kasatkina.

World No. 44 Osaka stormed past the top-seeded Halep in stunning fashion with a 6-3, 6-0 win, while Russian juggernaut Kasatkina wore down the 37-year-old seven-time Grand Slam winner Venus Williams in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.

The 26-year-old former champion Halep dropped to 18-2 on the season as she lasted just 64 minutes on the court with Osaka.

"I just was not ready. I missed the ball a lot and I didn't play what I had to play," Halep said. "I don't find excuses. She was better. I just was not ready and played wrong."

Youth prevailed Friday night as both unseeded Osaka and world No. 19 Kasatkina are 20 years old while the combined age of Williams and Halep is 63.

"I feel like there is a new generation and we are trying to push through," said Osaka, who clinched the contest on the third match point.

Osaka improved to 14-4 in 2018 as she came into the clash as the lowest ranked Indian Wells semi-finalist since Kim Clijsters in 2005.

"I was kind of nervous that entire (final) game because it kept going back and forth," Osaka said.

"But I'm really glad I was able to finish on my serve instead of having to break her or something like that. Yeah, it felt good."

Halep had three double faults, won just five points on her second serve and had her serve broken five times.

Halep, who had reached the semi-finals in all four of her tournaments in 2018, was trying to repeat her Indian Wells success of three years ago when she beat Jelena Jankovic to lift the trophy.

Meanwhile, Kasatkina rolled over her third top-10 player in a row to reach her first Indian Wells final.

Kasatkina rallied to claim the biggest victory of her career and defeat world number eight Williams, extending a year-long assault on top players, Grand Slam winners and former world number ones.

"A match like this, you're just speechless," Kasatkina said. "Too many emotions and you cannot explain everything.

"Maybe one of the best nights in my life, for sure."

Serving for the match, Kasatkina clinched the victory on her second match point as she raced out to a 40-0 lead. Williams hit a cross-court forehand winner on the first match point but then dumped a backhand into the net to end the two hour, 49 minute marathon showdown.

Ultimately the young Russian proved to be too strong for Williams, who appeared to hit a wall at about the two and a half hour mark.

"As my coach said, she's 37 years old, I am 20, so I should go for three sets," she said.

Kasatkina fired one ace, hit five double faults and broke Williams's serve seven times in the entertaining match.

63 unforced errors

Williams had almost double the number of unforced errors, 63-45, and broke Kasatkina six times but she also made five double faults -- some at crucial moments in the match.

"Anyone who gets used to losses should give up on life," Williams said.

Kasatkina continues her Cinderella run through the California desert tournament as she goes for her second WTA title.

Kasatkina has beaten all four reigning Grand Slam champions in the past year, including US Open champ Sloane Stephens twice. She did it for the second time at Indian Wells, winning their third round match 6-4, 6-3.

Kevin Pietersen confirms retirement in heartfelt Instagram post

South African seamer Vernon Philander has said his Twitter account was hacked after an inflammatory message was posted suggesting Australian captain Steve Smith could have avoided an incident that resulted in Kagiso Rabada being suspended.

Fast bowler Rabada made contact with Smith's shoulder after dismissing him in the first innings of their six-wicket victory in the second test in Port Elizabeth.

He was later found guilty of "inappropriate and deliberate physical contact with a player" by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and will miss the rest of the four-match series.

The 22-year-old, who took 11 wickets in the match, has appealed the decision.

The tweet, which had a video clip of the incident attached, said Smith was equally guilty and had milked the incident.

"Haven't really seen the footage of this incident but by the looks of this ... Steve Smith gave KG (Rabada) the shoulder," it said.

"He could have avoided any contact but to me, he is just as guilty. Trying some football skills to get a penalty??? Pity he didn't dive to top it off."

Early on Thursday, however, Philander distanced himself from the comment, saying someone else had posted to his 185,000 followers.

"Waking up this morning to a lot of twitter craziness as my acc got hacked and someone posted a nice little article on my behalf," he posted after deleting the original message.

"Sorry for all the drama or entertainment caused by the looks of it."

The episode is the latest twist in a tempestuous test series that has seen five players punished by the ICC.

In the first test in Durban, security cameras captured a heated argument between Warner and South Africa wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock after the teams left the field for tea on the fourth day.

Warner said the wicketkeeper had made "vile and disgusting" comments about his wife.

Warner was fined 75 percent of his match fee, while de Kock was fined 25 percent. Both were given demerit points.

Rabada was handed three demerit points for the shoulder bump in Port Elizabeth, taking him to eight within a two-year period, which triggered an automatic two-match suspension.

He was also given another demerit point for a send-off of Warner in the second innings.

Australians Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Marsh are the other players to receive fines and demerit points in the series.

The third match in the series, which is level at 1-1, starts in Cape Town on March 22.

Pity he didn't dive to top it off." Early on Thursday, however, Philander distanced himself from the comment, saying someone else had posted to his 185,000 followers. "Waking up this morning to a lot of twitter craziness as my acc got hacked and someone posted a nice little article on my behalf," he posted after deleting the original message. "Sorry for all the drama or entertainment caused by the looks of it." The episode is the latest twist in a tempestuous test series that has seen five players punished by the ICC.

Two South Korean freestyle skiers who competed at last month's Pyeongchang Winter Olympics have been banned for life for allegedly assaulting female teammates, Seoul's ski association said Thursday.

Champions League: Messi strikes twice as Barcelona crush Chelsea

A determined AS Roma beat Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 on Tuesday to reach the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2008 as a magnificent finish by Bosnia striker Edin Dzeko sent them through on away goals.

Having trailed 2-1 from the first leg, Roma looked bereft of ideas for much of the contest at the Stadio Olimpico before Dzeko broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute following a tepid first half devoid of goal-mouth action.

CoA's statement comes after reports emerged that Shami was allegedly involved in match-fixing. Recently, Shami's wife Hasin Jahan had levelled some serious allegations including adultery, match-fixing and even attempt to murder on Shami. The (COA) is now investigating the matter. Earlier, Kolkata Police had sent a letter to BCCI regarding the information of the route for Shami's last match to South Africa after his wife Hasin Jahan had alleged that he had stayed back in Dubai. Hasin said, "Shami abused me and started beating me even after returning from South Africa. He has been doing this for quite some time now and now I have had enough." Shami's wife also asked for help from West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee.

Tai Tzu has proved to be her nemesis with an overall 9-5 record against her. The Indian has lost the last seven outings, the most recent being at the Indonesia Masters final early in the year.
Sindhu, Srikanth eye All England Championship

"Suresh Raina is my favourite fielder. Virat Kohli has got an incredible arm. He is very competitive in the field. But, as a captain, he is always thinking about different things like bowling changes and field changes. So, I think that someone like Suresh Raina he reminds me of me. If I was a player now and I had a role model from the fielding point of view I would certainly look at Suresh Raina” - Jonty Rhodes, South African cricketer.

Suresh Raina is popular for his sharp reflexes when it comes to fielding. The biggest strength of Raina is his flexibility in terms of fielding positions, he easily gets settled at any fielding position - be it point, covers, long on, long off or the slip cordon.

His yesterday's flying catch against Sri Lanka will prove his fielding and catching abilities even after his comeback when he saw off Danushka Gunathilaka in the third over.

Shardul Thakur registered his best T20 bowling figures and finished with impressive figures of 4/27

26-year old, Shardul Thakur, who inspired India's win in the last T20 match against Sri Lanka said, "I have been practising (knuckleball) it for a long time. It hasn't come easy." "While I was playing domestic cricket...I used to try a knuckle-ball," he further added. With such passion and dedication, the newcomers are stepping up for the team as the pillars. Shardul Thakur celebrates with teammates after dismissing Sri Lankan batsman Dushmantha Chameera. (AFP) × India beat Sri Lanka in the fourth T20I of the Nidahas Trophy by six wickets on Monday in a Twenty20 series. India had entered the tournament as favourites but to win the title. Though, some of the star players have been dropped for the series like Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav. The way these young guns are performing, it seems they are set ready to replace some big names from the playing XI. In a post-match presentation, Shardul Thakur talked about his performance in the yesterday's match against Sri Lanka on which he said, "Probably the way they(Sri Lanka) were going, they would have scored 165 to 170 runs. But, we got Upul (Tharanga) out." Young Mumbaikar, who prefers local train than extraordinary lifestyle, Shardul Thakur registered his best T20 bowling figures and finished with impressive figures of 4/27. People would often ask me when I’ll play for Mumbai and India in the train. Some would taunt me as well saying ‘why are you after cricket....Stop doing time pass’. But I knew what I had to do. - @imShard Dhool Thakur. #WhistlePodu ???? https://t.co/1mhgfOP5PZ — Chennai Super Kings (@ChennaiIPL) March 2, 2018 × He gave the necessary breakthrough when he dismissed Danushka Gunathilaka (17) in the third over with Suresh Raina taking a stunning catch at midwicket. On being asked about his career-best bowling figure he said, "I love challenges. So, I am taking it as a challenge. When other senior bowlers are missing from the team, it's me who (has) to step up."
Jose Mourinho launched a stinging attack on Dutchman Frank de Boer on Monday after the former Crystal Palace coach criticised Manchester United's sparse use of Marcus Rashford.

Rashford scored twice in his first Premier League start of 2018 as United edged out Liverpool 2-1 on Saturday, but Mourinho still substituted the 20-year-old England forward 20 minutes from time as he looked to make the game safe.

"It's a pity that the manager is Mourinho because normally he's an English player, you want to give him time and he can then make mistakes," De Boer told BT Sport.

Tiger Woods came up just short of his 80th US PGA Tour title on Sunday at the Valspar Championship, where it was England's Paul Casey ending a victory drought with a one-stroke triumph.

Woods, the 14-time major champion playing just his fourth Tour event since spinal fusion surgery last April, showed he's a contender again as he fired a one-under-par 70 to share second on nine-under 275 -- one stroke behind Casey who surged to his second US PGA Tour title with a 65 for 274.

"I think I've gotten a little better than what I was a couple of weeks ago," Woods said.

"I keep getting just a little better and a little sharper. Today I wasn't quite as sharp as I would like to have had it, but I had a good shot at winning this golf tournament."

Woods' fusion surgery ended a brief comeback bid last year. He remains in search of his first title since 2013 -- but on Sunday it finally looked as if it wasn't a question of whether that drought will end but when.

He opened with a birdie on the Copperhead course at Innisbrook Resort near Tampa, Florida, but gave that stroke back with a bogey at the fourth.

Woods didn't find another birdie until the 17th, where he drained a putt of almost 45 feet to close within one stroke of Casey's clubhouse lead and send his massive gallery into a frenzy.

He couldn't repeat the feat at the 18th to force a playoff, however, another long birdie try coming up a couple of feet short.

Woods finished the day tied for second with fellow American Patrick Reed.

Reed opened his round with a 60-foot eagle putt from the collar of the green at the first. He was 10-under through 17, but dropped out of playoff contention with a shocking bogey at the last, where his first putt failed to make it to the upper tier of the green where the pin was located.

Casey had four birdies and a bogey on his front nine, then seized control with three birdies on the trot at 11, 12 and 13 that moved him to 10-under.

Casey 'so happy'

He said keeping bogeys off his card over the demanding closing holes was key.

"The clean-ups on 16, 17 and 18 -- fantastic," Casey said. "I've not done that in a long time and that's the difference. That's what I need to do."

The 40-year-old has 17 victories on the European Tour, the most recent coming at the KLM Open in September of 2014.

A three-time Ryder Cup player for Europe, his only previous US tour title came at the 2009 Houston Open.

"To get this one, to get my second one on the PGA tour is emotional. I'm so happy for it," Casey said, noting that winning any tournament on one of the world's elite tours is just difficult.

"(Woods) made it look easy for such a long time, and it's not," he said.

Spain's Sergio Garcia put in an encouraging performance as he warms up for the defense of his Masters title, firing a final round 65 to finish alone in fourth on eight-under 276.

WION Sports News: Top sports results this week

Paulo Dybala scored in each half to give Juventus a 2-0 home win over Udinese and put them top of Serie A on Sunday as Napoli slipped to second following a 0-0 draw at Inter Milan.

Juventus, who are chasing a seventh successive league title, have 71 points from 27 games, with Napoli on 70 from 28 after a dour stalemate with Inter at the San Siro.

Dybala curled home a superb free kick from the edge of the area in the 20th minute to put Juventus ahead, and he was pulled down for a penalty later in the first half only for fellow Argentinian Gonzalo Higuain to miss the spot kick.

Dybala added his second four minutes after halftime, Higuain expertly holding up the ball before playing it into the path of the 24-year-old, who slotted it home right-footed.

Inter defender Milan Skriniar missed the game's best chance in the late fixture as he headed against the post shortly after the break, with Napoli striker Lorenzo Insigne twice coming close in the latter stages.

The sudden death last week of Fiorentina captain Davide Astori cast a pall over Sunday's proceedings in Serie A.

Many of last weekend's matches were postponed following his passing and this week's games began with both silence and applause as the 31-year-old Italian international was remembered.

In the day's early kickoff, Vitor Hugo scored the only goal as Fiorentina beat Benevento 1-0 at the Artemio Franchi stadium in a game filled with emotional tributes to Astori, who was buried on Thursday.

? #MondayMotivation ? pic.twitter.com/hZ7yUODJ8m — JuventusFC (@juventusfcen) March 12, 2018 × Inter defender Milan Skriniar missed the game's best chance in the late fixture as he headed against the post shortly after the break, with Napoli striker Lorenzo Insigne twice coming close in the latter stages. 1️⃣1️⃣ lions. 1️⃣1️⃣ straight @seriea_tim wins. ??#FinoAllaFine #ForzaJuve #JuveUdinese A post shared by Juventus Football Club (@juventus) on Mar 11, 2018 at 9:08am PDT × Lazio's Ciro Immobile scored both goals, including a superb backheel deep into stoppage time, to give his side a share of the spoils as they drew 2-2 away to Cagliari. Golf: England's Matt Wallace claims Indian Open title

Cristiano Ronaldo struck late with a bullet header to give Real Madrid a 2-1 win at Eibar in La Liga on Saturday, taking his side to within four points of second-placed Atletico Madrid.

Ronaldo scored for the seventh successive game in all competitions by blasting into the net in the 34th minute after chesting down a long ball by Luka Modric, but eighth-placed Eibar pegged the champions back when Ivan Ramis outjumped Sergio Ramos to head home from a corner in the 50th.

Ronaldo was denied by an inspired save by Eibar's Marko Dmitrovic, who clawed away the Portuguese's header following a cross from Gareth Bale.

The irrepressible striker had the final say, however, meeting a cross from Dani Carvajal in the area and powering the ball beyond the Serbian goalkeeper in the 84th minute, scoring the 13th goal in his last seven games in all competitions.

Ronaldo has roared back from a feeble start to the season, when he scored just once in his first eight league games, to reach 18 goals in the campaign.

His double against Eibar allowed him to move into the top three scorers in the league, trailing Barcelona duo Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez on 24 and 20 respectively.

"He's from another galaxy," Real coach Zinedine Zidane said of Ronaldo.

"He knows he's going to score, he's unique and special. His stats speak for him. And he's our player. He's always positive and if he scores twice, he wants to score a third."

Real are third in the Liga standings on 57 points, 12 behind runaway leaders Barcelona, who visit basement club Malaga later on Sunday. Atletico host Celta Vigo on Sunday.

Better Start

Tiny Eibar is in contention for a European place next season and made the better start to the game, with Zidane admitting his side struggled in the opening stages.

"This victory makes me feel very good because they were the better side for a while, they played very well," added the coach.

"This is a very difficult ground to come to and they know how to play here. We knew we were going to suffer and we did, we had trouble getting hold of the ball but we fought together with character and got the win."

Ronaldo has roared back from a feeble start to the season, when he scored just once in his first eight league games, to reach 18 goals in the campaign

He's always positive and if he scores twice, he wants to score a third." Real are third in the Liga standings on 57 points, 12 behind runaway leaders Barcelona, who visit basement club Malaga later on Sunday. Atletico host Celta Vigo on Sunday. Better Start Tiny Eibar is in contention for a European place next season and made the better start to the game, with Zidane admitting his side struggled in the opening stages. "This victory makes me feel very good because they were the better side for a while, they played very well," added the coach. "This is a very difficult ground to come to and they know how to play here. We knew we were going to suffer and we did, we had trouble getting hold of the ball but we fought together with character and got the win." Valencia tightened their grip on fourth place in the standings and took a giant leap towards returning to the Champions League by winning 2-0 at Sevilla, opening up an 11-point gap with the Andalusians in fifth place. Spain international Rodrigo Moreno scored either side of halftime to inflict a third home defeat in little more than two months on Sevilla, whose best chance of getting back into Europe's elite competition now likely rests on them winning the tournament. Vincenzo Montella's side visits Manchester United on Tuesday in a last-16 second leg, with the tie finely balanced at 0-0. "The first thing we need to do is forget about this disappointment and focus on Tuesday's game," Montella said.
