The 2010 FIFA World Cup champions Spain will open their campaign in the ongoing edition, in Qatar, on Wednesday (November 23). The Spanish line-up have had a good run in the past. While they were semi-finalists in the Euro 2020, losing to eventual winners Italy, they also finished as runners-up in the most recent UEFA Nations League. Thus, Spanish football manager Luis Enrique has enough talent in the squad to choose from. The former champions will start as favourites versus Costa Rica.

On the other hand, Costa Rica coach Luis Fernando Suarez said prior to the game, "In my group I have different leaders. I can have a few of them so I can manage them, Suarez said at a press conference while naming Bryan Ruiz, Keylor Navas and Joel Campbell as the leaders of the team." In terms of head-to-head, La Roja lead Costa Rica 2-1. Even a draw for Costa Rica will give them a massive boast in a group where they will also face Germany and Japan. Meanwhile, anything less than a win will not be an ideal start for the Spanish line-up.

A nun who wowed the audience with her singing prowess in Italy's version of 'The Voice' back in 2014 has announced that she has now left the church and become a waitress in Spain.

Sicily's Sister Cristina Scuccia had shocked judges, including the late Raffaella Carrà, with her rapturous performance of Alicia Keys’ hit song 'No One' during a blind audition for the reality show. After realising the incredible voice belonged to a nun, Carrà had said: “I couldn’t speak for several minutes."

Back then, Scuccia was a nun at the Ursuline Sisters of the Holy Family convent in Milan. She eventually went on to win the show and even produced an album later which she presented to Pope Francis.

Eight years on, Scuccia announced on an Italian talk show on Sunday night that she has abandoned the nunhood.
Scuccia appeared on the chat show and looked dramatically different from her last outing in 'The Voice'. Dressed in a red pant-suit and high heels, with a pierced nose and long dark hair flowing freely, she told the Verissimo programme, “I believe that you need to listen to your heart with courage. Change is a sign of evolution, but it is always scary because it is easier to anchor oneself to one’s certainties rather than question oneself. Is there a right or wrong?”

Scuccia may have left nunhood but she added that she had not renounced her faith and that she was still chasing her dream of a career in music.

“I chose to follow my heart without thinking about what people would say about me,” she added. “I took a leap of faith and was worried about ending up under a bridge, I always repeated this to my psychologist.”

The singer added she is is now living in Spain "with a smile."

"Toro Jubilo", celebrated in the Spanish medieval town of Medinaceli is an age-old tradition that is believed to stem from pagan traditions. A test of courage, the fiesta is hell on the animal at the center of this celebration. While the participants say it's an age-old tradition, as per the website Nerja Today you can gauge how bad it is by the fact that this 'tradition' was "actually banned during the Franco era between 1962 and 1977." Animal rights organisations are once again calling for the event's ban. Here's why.

In Madrid, thousands of protesters marched in support of the region's basic healthcare facilities and warned that any alteration to the system would "destroy" local healthcare. Under the banner, "Madrid rallies in support of public healthcare and against the intention to dismantle primary care services," massive crowds gathered at four locations around the capital.

Primary healthcare services in the Madrid area have reportedly been under tremendous pressure for years due to a lack of funding and workforce, with the problem being made worse by subpar regional administration, according to unions.

A regional government spokesman who spoke to AFP said there were 200,000 people on the streets, but organisers gave a figure three times higher, saying 650,000 demonstrators had joined the protest.

On Tuesday, a new report released by the European parliament painted a grim picture of the European Union democracy by detailing the increasing use of mercenary spyware, Pegasus. In the past 18 months, four EU countries — Hungary, Poland, Spain and Greece have been accused of using spyware or equivalent technology against their citizens.

Reports suggest that the software developed by the Israeli-based company NSO Group, Pegasus, and its less sophisticated version, Predator are some of the most well-known brands in Europe. Once this spyware infiltrates a device it can extract data and allow real-time surveillance, find passwords, track location and even activate its camera or microphone to gather information about its owner.

While the company claims that this software was designed to fight crime and terrorism, investigators have found that it is being used to snoop on journalists, activists, dissents as well as politicians across the world.

ALSO WATCH: Explainer: What is Pegasus spyware? How does it hack into your phone to spy on you?

Speaking at a press conference, Dutch EU lawmaker Sophie in 't Veld presented the draft version of the report and said that in countries like Poland and Hungary the use of such spyware is an “integral element” of a system that is designed to “control and even oppress the citizens” which often include “critics of the government, opposition, journalists, whistleblowers.”

In some cases, the spyware also leads to illegitimate surveillance which is often based on vague justifications while the exemption of national security is repeatedly invoked in order to dodge accountability as well as maintain secrecy. In this context, the report says, the “rule of law turns into law of the ruler.”

The liberal lawmaker who acted as rapporteur said that her team was forced to rely on publicly available resources as the EU governments refused to cooperate, “The spyware scandal is not a series of isolated national cases of abuse, but a full-blown European affair,” said the report.

Furthermore, in addition to the four aforementioned countries, the report also puts Cyprus under suspicion for the use of spyware. While Poland and Hungary have witnessed at least over a dozen cases of journalists and political opponents being illegally targeted, Greece has also been caught amid an escalating espionage scandal.

According to a separate report by Politico, at least 33 people in Greece including the phones of journalists, business people and lawmakers of the conservative New Democracy government, their families as well as the politicians of the main opposition Syriza party, had traces of the illegal spyware Predator on their devices.

Meanwhile, in Spain, the spyware was detected on Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s phone and the devices of several other national ministers as well as Catalan lawmakers, lawyers and civil society organisations. Earlier this year, a number of Catalan lawmakers had alleged that Spain’s intelligence authorities had used Pegasus software to hack their phones.

The fallout of the Pegasus scandal also resulted in the ouster of Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles, earlier this year. Meanwhile, in Greece, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was forced to issue an apology as well as announced the plans to ban the spyware technology amid mounting pressure.

Similarly, the Dutch EU lawmaker has also called for an immediate suspension of such spyware until proper regulation measures are in place. She also claimed that all 27 EU countries have spyware at their disposal even if they refused to admit it. The report alleges that countries like Cyprus and Bulgaria have acted as export hubs for this spyware.

“Europe has been the hub for exports to dictatorships and oppressive regimes, such as Libya, Egypt and Bangladesh,” said the report. During the conference, 't Veld also acknowledged that these findings were largely based on the work of journalists and investigators and not confirmed by governments.

Pegasus spyware scandal becomes a ‘full-blown European Union affair’: Report

A Spanish police offer who posted a misleading video clip suggestive of a sexual assault in July 2019, has been sentenced to 15 months in prison and told to pay a fine of €1,620 ($1627). A court in Barcelona on Tuesday convicted a Guardia Civil officer for an offence against fundamental rights and public freedoms while pointing out that he stirred up hatred against migrant children living in Spain.

According to Spanish law, custodial sentences of less than two years are not served by first-time offenders. The defendant police officer will thereby avoid his time in prison. The court ordered him to undertake a human rights and anti-discrimination course and to refrain from posting defamatory comments on social media.

What was the case all about?

In July 2019, a few days after a woman was allegedly raped by two migrant minors living in a reception centre, the Guardia Civil officer posted a video on his Twitter account that he said showed a young Moroccan migrant raping a woman in Canet de Mar, a town near Barcelona. The video was watched almost 21,000 times.

The video, however, was from China, and showed a woman being beaten and sexually assaulted.

“Here’s a video of the Moroccan mena (a derogatory term for unaccompanied minors) in Canet de Mar, one of the ones who we will end up paying for until he’s 23,” read the post. The officer also wrote that the attack by “lunatics and packs of Moroccans” were being ignored by the media.

Prosecutors claimed that the defendant’s account was full of racist and xenophobic material. They had initially sought a two-year sentence.

“Driven by his animosity towards, and rejection of, foreign immigrants of Moroccan origin, he published a tweet and a video showing an apparent rape committed by two minors in an effort to smear them by associating them in a general manner with violent acts and sexual assaults,” the Barcelona court said while handing over the quantum of sentence to the defendant.

On Friday, Spain’s airspace had to be partially closed for some time over several regions, including the northeastern region of Catalonia and three others in the country, after a nearly 23-tonne Chinese rocket, Long March 5B (CZ-5B), broke up as it re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere before falling into the Pacific Ocean.

The authorities also indicated that the debris of the Chinese rocket passed by the Spanish airspace before falling off the Mexican coast. Meanwhile, partial closure that lasted for nearly 40 minutes from 9:37 am to 10:17 am, led to the delay of nearly 300 flights, said Spain’s airport authorities.

Long March 5B is one of the most powerful Chinese rockets, said reports. According to the US Space Command, “It re-entered the atmosphere over the south-central Pacific Ocean at 4:01 am MDT/10:01 UTC on 11/4.” According to the EU Space Surveillance and Tracking (EUSST) centre, the core stage of the rocket was about 30 metres long and weighed somewhere between 17 to 23 tonnes making one of the “largest pieces of debris re-entering” the Earth’s atmosphere in the near past.

This uncontrolled debris re-entering the atmosphere drew criticism from NASA Administrator Bill Nelson who in a statement on Friday said, “Once again, the People’s Republic of China is taking unnecessary risks with the uncontrolled rocket stage re-entry of their Long March 5B rocket stage. They did not share specific trajectory information which is needed to predict landing zones and reduce risk.”

France and Spain experienced abnormally high temperatures on Thursday, which attracted some beachgoers but also added to growing worries about changing weather patterns in Europe.

Tourists were sunbathing in bikinis on the French Riviera, the terraces were packed, and the water was warm enough to swim in.

“At the end of October it cools down normally and by All Saints Day it usually rains, but this year is exceptional,” said Rose-Marie Martini, tanning on the beach in a bathing suit.

She stated that the water at her house was still warm enough for swimming (20 to 21 degrees Celsius) and that the heating was still off.

The exceptionally warm October in Western Europe comes after a summer when sweltering temperatures dried up rivers, farms, and forests and let flames run wild.

The Spanish city of Madrid and its streets had an unexpected sight on Sunday. Instead of the usual crowd of people and cars, hundreds of sheep flocked the streets, in a continuation of an age-old tradition. As the bells tolled around the neck of the fluffy animal and provided a noisy soundtrack, the shepherds guided them to the southern pastures of the country for grazing. Locals and tourists lined around the city to observe the spectacle. "It was crazy that there were so many sheep, I've never seen anything like it. It was a great way to learn about Spanish history and Spanish culture," said one of the tourists. Notably, the Spanish capital lies in the middle of an ancient migration route that the shepherds took ahead of the cold, winter months. Continuing the tradition is a way for the locals to pay their respects to the area's culture and heritage. In an official and rather fun ceremony between the city mayor and the chief herdsmen, a nominal fee is paid in exchange for the safe passage of the animals. In olden times, 50 coins per thousand heads of livestock was set as the usual fare for the passage of the animals. At the time, the livestock would have passed through a quiet route but today it passes in front of some of the busiest areas of Madrid viz. Plaza Mayor and Madrid main square. The European Union will unveil proposals next week to launch joint gas buying within months and develop an alternative gas price benchmark, but a meeting of EU countries on Wednesday left it unresolved whether the package would include a gas price cap.

The European Union will unveil proposals next week to launch joint gas buying within months and develop an alternative gas price benchmark, but a meeting of EU countries on Wednesday left it unresolved whether the package would include a gas price cap. The 27-country EU is plotting its next move to tame soaring energy prices and shield consumers from surging bills, as Europe heads into a winter of scarce Russian gas, a cost of living crisis and the looming threat of recession. After a meeting of EU energy ministers in Prague, EU energy commissioner Kadri Simson said the European Commission would lay out plans to develop an alternative EU gas price benchmark, and quickly launch joint gas buying among EU countries. Simson said, however, it was still unclear if there was enough support among countries for a price cap on gas used for power generation to be added to the October 18 package; a move many countries have sought. "We will see over the weekend how we can proceed with capping the gas for power generation, if this is at that stage that we can say that there is a broad majority of member states supporting this measure," she said, adding that the package would set out how a "temporary mechanism" to limit gas prices could work, and the risks it would entail. Czech Industry Minister Jozef Sikela said ministers had agreed joint gas buying should launch by next summer, and that the Czech Republic - which holds the EU's rotating presidency - would call an emergency meeting of ministers in November to approve the upcoming proposals. "I firmly believe that today's meeting has helped to bridge the divergent views between the member states," Sikela said. Iberian example With gas prices almost 90 per cent higher than a year ago, most EU countries say they want a gas price cap, but have struggled to agree on its design - be it a price cap on all gas, pipeline gas, or just gas used to produce electricity. Spain and Portugal capped the price of gas used in power generation in June, which helped curb local power prices. Support has built among other EU countries to roll it out EU-wide, although some warn it could raise gas demand across the bloc since Spain's gas use increased under the measure. The meeting outcome aligned with many of the measures suggested in a proposal by Germany and the Netherlands who warn broad gas price caps could leave Europe struggling to attract supplies while swerving the cap that 15 other EU states have urged Brussels to propose. The German and Dutch proposal, seen by Reuters, backed an alternative benchmark gas price, joint gas buying and negotiating lower prices with non-Russian suppliers as well as tighter targets to save gas this winter. Norway's energy minister Terje Aasland, who joined Wednesday's meeting along with other European non-EU members, said his country "doesn't recommend" a gas price cap. European gas prices surged after Russia slashed gas deliveries to Europe following its invasion of Ukraine, blaming the cuts on Western sanctions imposed over the conflict. EU countries have already rushed through emergency energy windfall profit levies, gas storage filling obligations, and electricity demand curbs to address the surge in energy prices. But the pressure to agree more EU-wide measures has increased after Germany said it would spend up to $194 billion to shield its consumers and businesses from high energy costs - prompting a backlash from some countries about the uneven rollout of national support. There is a lot of the good, the bad and the ugly that is common to the 1920s and 2020s.

The “Roaring 1920s”, as the Americans used to call it, was a decade of change brought on by cars, radios and telephones. The radio brought the world into people’s homes. The telephone, like the automobile, connected people. A world rooted in and driven by communication and mobility triggered unforeseen development in America and Europe. It was a decade of economic growth and expanding prosperity marked by a cultural and social dynamism that saw both fashion and music make tremendous advances. Radio, telephone, films, automobiles, aviation, electricity and electrical goods spurred industrial growth and transformed millions of lives in the West.

The ‘flu epidemic that broke out in 1918 and is estimated to have killed between 20 and 50 million raged on till 1920 and was followed by disastrous after-effects. That was also the decade of migration and globalisation (good); violent nativism (bad); and, rampant racism, the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan and genocide (ugly).

The political and economic processes of the 1920s paved the way for the unimaginable horrors of the 1930s. The financial crisis that gripped the US and the economic distress in Europe paved the way for the rise of fascist forces which seized power and unleashed widespread hatred and violence against Jews and other minorities that made World War II inevitable.

Cut to the 2020s. Even those who remember this history are condemned to repeat it. The awesome technological revolution has spawned supercomputers, the internet, the cellular phone and the hydra-headed monster that is the media and social media. These in turn, both as medium and message, have brought about an explosion of information and knowledge extending to the remotest and poorest parts of the world connected in every way by multiple infrastructures.

The good that comes with technology, computers and cars do cannot be separated from the bad, the ugly and the evil that exist alongside.

Thus, 100 years later, despite all the advancements in medicine the world could not prevent the pandemic of Covid-19, which spared no country and killed millions. There is already a gathering economic crisis where large sections of the population in Africa, South America and the poor quarters of Asia are facing the threat of starvation. Hunger also looms large in regions which have been cut off from food supplies, first by the epidemic and now by the war in Ukraine.

There is migration, racism, intolerance, killings, persecution of minorities and, like in the 1920s, a resurgence of fascist forces in the developing and the developed parts of the world.

The latest reminder that the world today may be in for the ugly consequences that flowed from the events and developments of the 1920s, is former US President Donald Trump extending open support to the fascist far-right in Spain. Trump did this in a video recording that was shown at a rally of the far-right Vox party in Madrid. Trumped thanked Vox and its leader Santiago Abascal for the “great job” they were doing.

Vox, the third largest party in the Spanish parliament, is: opposed to immigrants, shuns gender equality, hostile to Islam and openly embraces the legacy of the fascist dictator Gen Francisco Franco. The rally was endorsed by the likes of Giorgia Meloni, leader of the neo-fascist Brothers of Italy that swept to power in the recent elections; and, Hungary’s Viktor Orban, who has emerged as an icon for the new generation of European fascists.

The big difference between the 1920s and the 2020s is that, in the last century, US presidents did not support the fascists or cheer them on. Instead, the US entered the War to fight fascism. In the 2020s, a former US president, who may well return to the White House in 2024, along with Senator Ted Cruz, has firmly cast their lot with the forces of fascism, intolerance and hate at home and abroad.

WION Spotlight | Trump says Spain's neo-fascists doing a 'great job'

The Senate in Madrid has granted the Mar Menor lagoon on Spain's southeast coast personhood status, allowing for legal action on behalf of the endangered ecosystem against polluters. The new law, which grants such rights to a natural area for the first time in Europe, was passed after more than 640,000 Spaniards signed a petition demanding that the lagoon be regarded on par with people.

The largest saltwater lagoon in Europe, Mar Menor, has recently been severely harmed by agricultural runoff from surrounding fields, with dire effects for the native animals. For example, contamination from fertilisers has repeatedly led to algal blooms that decrease the water's oxygen content and cause massive die-offs.

A critically endangered species of fan mussel has virtually disappeared from the lagoon as a result of such incidents, and several seahorses, crabs, and eels have also perished. Millions of dead fish began washing up on the coast, and the locals, many of whom rely on tourists for a living, decided enough was enough, as reported by IFL Science.

The 1,600 square kilometre (618 square mile) region covered by the citizen-led project includes the lagoon and the nearby coastline. Three senators abstained, leaving 230 senators in favour of the new law. The far-right Vox party was the only organisation to oppose the measure by petitioning for a veto, which was ultimately refused.

As a result, Mar Menor's ability to exist, develop naturally, and be restored is acknowledged by law. The ecology will now be represented by a committee that will serve as its legal guardian, just like a person. This committee has the power to file lawsuits and pursue other legal actions on behalf of the lagoon against people who violate its basic rights.

Although such a rule has never been enacted in Europe, other regions have already adopted comparable regulations. In 2017, the New Zealand government recognised the Whanganui River as having personhood rights, formally recognising the claims of the area's Indigenous populations to the waterway as one of their ancestors and acknowledging that their well-being was intimately connected to the ecosystem.

War-torn Ukraine will join Spain and Portugal in a bid to host the 2030 World Cup, presidents from the three countries' football associations announced on Wednesday. The original proposal was made public two years ago and the Spanish football association (RFEF) said in a statement the idea was backed by UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin.

"The Royal Spanish Football Federation and the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) have incorporated the Ukrainian Football Association (UAF) into the Iberian Bid to organise the 2030 World Cup," RFEF said in a statement. "With the full support of Aleksander Ceferin, the Iberian bid incorporates the federation chaired by Andriy Pavelko in order to build bridges and project a message of unity, solidarity and generosity from all of European football," it added.

Portugal hosted the 2004 European Championship while Ukraine was a joint host with Poland of Euro 2012. "The example of tenacity and resilience set by the Ukrainian people is inspiring," the FPF said. The FPF added that the joint bid "aims to contribute through the power of football to the recovery of a country undergoing reconstruction". It added that the terms of Ukraine's role in the bid "will be discussed and defined in due course".

It follows the announcement last month from an Egyptian official that Egypt, Greece and Saudi Arabia are in talks to jointly host the 2030 World Cup. In August, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Paraguay launched their bid to host the event -- which is the centenary of the first World Cup, held in Uruguay -- with the hope of bringing the global showpiece back to its first home.

The 2026 edition has already been awarded to three countries -- Canada, Mexico and the United States. More than half of the 21 World Cup finals already staged have been in Europe but later this year Qatar will host the finals, the first time they have been played in the Middle East.

Alvaro Morata's late goal earned Spain a 1-0 win in Portugal and the last place in the UEFA Nations League finals on Tuesday, while the Czech Republic were relegated from the top tier after losing in Switzerland. Portugal, winners of the inaugural Nations League in 2019, needed just a point in Braga to finish top of Group A2 but dropped to second as Morata tapped in Nico Williams' header on 88 minutes.

"When we had to stand up, we did," Morata told TVE. "If we had lost, it had to be giving everything we had on the pitch, and that's what we did." Spain join the Netherlands, Italy and Croatia in the finals which are scheduled for June next year. Switzerland, who beat Spain 2-1 in Zaragoza on Saturday, were indebted to goalkeeper Yann Sommer as he saved a second-half penalty to preserve victory over the Czechs.

Remo Freuler and Breel Embolo scored within a minute of each other in the first half in St Gallen, but Patrik Schick pulled one back before the break. Schick saw his second-half penalty kept out by Sommer as the Swiss won 2-1, condemning the Czech Republic to relegation to League B. Scotland clinched promotion to League A after a 0-0 draw against Ukraine in Krakow, having beaten the same opponents 3-0 last week in Glasgow.

"We don't want to stop, we want to keep getting better," said Scotland coach Steve Clarke. "These players are desperate to do well for their country and they have had a great week." Robbie Brady's stoppage-time penalty gave the Republic of Ireland a 3-2 victory over Armenia in Dublin in the other game in Group B1.

Irish captain John Egan and Michael Obafemi put the hosts two goals in front but Armenia equalised as Artak Dashyan and Eduard Spertsyan struck in quick succession. Dashyan and Hovhannes Hambartsumyan were sent off to leave Armenia with nine players as Brady's winner saw the Irish finish third in the section.

Serbia took top spot in Group B above Norway as forward pair Dusan Vlahovic and Aleksandar Mitrovic got the goals in a 2-0 victory in Oslo. Mitrovic's strike was his 50th at international level. He scored a hat-trick in Saturday's 4-1 win over Sweden. Sweden will drop into League C after a 1-1 draw with Slovenia in Solna, where Emil Forsberg cancelled out Benjamin Sesko's opener for the visitors. Greece made it five wins from six in Group C2 as they beat Northern Ireland 3-1 in Athens. Kosovo thrashed Cyprus 5-1 in Pristina.

Spain is planning to offer digital nomad visas to encourage non-European Union (EU) citizens to come to the country and enjoy working in the sun. The law is yet to be passed but the Spanish government is intending to dole out lucrative incentives to make the proposal all the more enticing.

Digital nomads or remote workers refer to individuals who travel remotely and work using technology and internet. They do not have a set base and work in public libraries, cafes and co-working spaces. Countries across Europe are luring them with visas to boost tourism.

Reportedly, the digital nomad visa will be offered to those who are self-employed or working remotely or employed by non-Spanish companies. The applicants will need to be outside the European Economic Area and should be able to furnish a contract of employment to demonstrate they have been working remotely.

While the more intricate details are yet to be hammered out, the Spanish government is expected to grant a residency permit for a year, which can be renewed for up to five years, depending on the applicant's record. Spouses or children will also be eligible to join the applicant.

Additionally, for the initial four years, the individual will receive a 10 per cent relaxation in the taxation scheme. According to Spanish media outlets, the new residents will be taxed at 15 per cent, compared to the standard 25 per cent rate.
