The underwater monuments that have reemerged in Spain as a result of a severe drought include a centuries-old church and a massive megalithic complex.

Tourists flock as severe drought in Spain uncovers submerged monuments

A centuries-old church and a huge megalithic complex are among the underwater monuments that have resurfaced in Spain. This has happened after a severe drought has caused water levels in reservoirs to plunge.

The massive droughts in Europe saw a number of rivers completely drying up in the past few months and in most cases, that resulted in ancient structures coming to sight after almost centuries. A similar phenomenon happened in Spain as a stone circle resurfaced from the bottom of the river.

It happened in the Extremadura region of the country where a stone circle which was dubbed the “Spanish Stonehenge” was exposed as the water level receded. While it was first discovered by researchers back in 1926, the construction of the Valdecanas reservoir flooded the region once again in 1963 and it was submerged until recently.

The site, which researchers thought dated back to around 5000 BC, has quickly turned into a popular tourist destination and has been given the official name of “Dolmen of Guadalperal”.

Another such structure that emerged out of the water in another part of the country was a church supposedly built in the 11th century. In the village of Sant Roma de Sau, the church was flooded in 1960 but the drought made the river go back few miles which allowed it to reappear.

The drought has caused a lot of damage to Spanish water reserves as according to official data, the reservoirs currently are working at less than 40 per cent capacity. It has resulted in a number of small towns and cities facing a major crisis in the last few weeks when it comes to water supply.

According to a study published by Nature Geoscience journal, Spain is currently facing the worst water crisis in around 1000 years.

The farmers in Castilla-La Mancha in central Spain are known to farm olives and vines but they are slowly moving towards a cash crop for quick profits. The last few months have seen them replanting their fields with pistachios – a crop that is worth ten times the value of olives in the market.

“I used to farm cereals, olives and vines but I’ve abandoned them all in order to grow pistachios,” says Gustavo Adolfo Galvez, who has a pistachio plantation near Toledo, told The Guardian. “[They are] a lot more profitable and cheaper to produce, and it’s meant a lot more farmers can survive.”

Galvez also explained that while olives go for 65-85 cents per kg, pistachios fetch around €6-8.

Pistachios can withstand drought – an important factor in La Mancha – but need plentiful water during the nut-forming stage.

The idea of farming pistachio actually came from the regional institute for agricultural research and development which was set up by the regional government way back in 1986. They looked for alternative crop options for the farmers and decided that pistachios were their best option.

“We spent the next 10 years researching alternative crops to the three or four that are already grown here,” José Francisco Couceiro López of the regional institute told The Guardian.

“Once we moved from theory to practice, we discarded practically all the options aside from pistachio. The pistachio almost magically suits the climate in Castilla-La Mancha. It can withstand the heat and the cold, and it can thrive in poor, shallow soil,” he explained.

In an attempt to ensure that animals are not mistreated before being killed, Spanish slaughterhouses have been ordered to install video surveillance. The Spanish government claims this is the first instance of such an order being passed in a European Union country. "This rule puts Spain at the forefront of Europe in this area and, as well as ensuring the welfare of animals during their passage through abattoirs, it also improves food safety guarantees for consumers," said Consumer Affairs Minister Alberto Garzon.

"We will be the first country in the European Union to have a compulsory video surveillance system in abattoirs," said the consumer affairs ministry of Pedro Sanchez's left-wing government.

The rule also orders abattoirs to retain the video images for later verification by the authorities. While large abattoirs have to ensure the implementation of the order within one year, the smaller operations have been granted two years.

A Cabinet meeting on Tuesday approved the measure and it will now be pushed quickly through parliament for approval. It has already been agreed with the industry, government spokesperson Isabel Rodríguez told a press conference.

Guillermo Moreno, executive director of Equalia, an NGO that lobbied for the reform, told AFP he was satisfied with what he called "a necessary and important first step to raise animal welfare standards in abattoirs".

Moreno also said that England, Scotland and Israel already had a similar measure in place in their slaughterhouses.

A huge megalithic complex of more than 500 standing stones has been discovered in southern Spain which could be one of the largest in Europe, archaeologists said Thursday. The stones were discovered on a plot of land in Huelva which was supposed to be used for avocado plantation. Considering the land's archaeological significance, the regional authorities requested to undertake a survey before granting the permit, leading to the finding.

“This is the biggest and most diverse collection of standing stones grouped together in the Iberian peninsula,” said José Antonio Linares, a researcher at Huelva University and one of the project’s three directors. The stones are between one and three metres in height.

A large number of different megaliths, including standing stones, dolmens, mounds, coffin-like stone boxes called cists, and enclosures were found at the site. Linares added that it is highly likely that the oldest standing stones at the La Torre-La Janera site were erected during the second half of the sixth or fifth millennium BC.

“Standing stones were the most common finding, with 526 of them still standing or lying on the ground,” said the researchers in an article published in Trabajos de Prehistoria, a prehistoric archaeology journal.

Meanwhile, at Carnac in northwestern France, which is one of the most famous megalithic sites in the world, there are some 3,000 standing stones. One of the most striking things was finding such diverse megalithic elements grouped together in one location and how well preserved they were, said Primitiva Bueno, co-director of the project and a prehistory professor at Alcala University near Madrid told AFP.

Many of the stones are buried deep in the earth. They will need to be carefully excavated with the work scheduled to run until 2026.

More than 1,100 firefighters battled a huge wildfire in central Portugal on Tuesday. The fire, which has ravaged the Serra da Estrela national park, had been largely put out as of Sunday but reignited again on Monday leading to the evacuation of several villages.

At least 20 passengers on board a train in Spain suffered burn injuries when the train ran into a wildfire. Three of them are said to have sustained severe burns, and one of whom had to be evacuated by helicopter. The injured include a 58-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl.

The train, en route from Sagunto in Valencia to Zaragoza, stopped suddenly when the driver saw wildfire ahead and could not go any further. He prepared to reverse the train but some passengers panicked and tried to flee by breaking down windows. However, they found themselves surrounded by fire and returned to the train.

"Three people suffered bad burn injuries," the regional health authorities said. More than eight others were lightly injured, they added.

Some 300 firefighters are battling a huge wildfire in southeastern Spain that has burnt through nearly 10,000 hectares in an area notoriously difficult to access, officials said.

The fire began when lightning hit the Vall de Ebo area in Valencia late Saturday and has since spread rapidly, fuelled by strong winds, forcing the evacuation of more than 1,500 people, regional authorities said.

"It's a very complicated situation... The fire is creating enormous difficulties that are absolutely impossible to tackle with the speed we would like,” regional president Ximo Puig said.

Also Read | Passengers in shock as train halts in middle of wildfire in Spain The train, en route from Sagunto in Valencia to Zaragoza, stopped suddenly when the driver saw wildfire ahead and could not go any further. Spain is battling a massive wildfire in its South-eastern region while another blaze in the Northern Aragon region has reportedly been stabilized.

An area equivalent to the size of one-fifth of Belgium has been destroyed by fires throughout Europe after a series of scorching heatwaves and a record-breaking drought, which might push the entire continent towards a record-breaking year for wildfire destruction, experts predict.

As per data revealed by the European Forest Fire Information System (Effis), 659,541 hectares of land burned over the continent between the time periods of January and August, which is the largest ever recorded since records began in 2006. The data stated that the total land area burned across the continent is twice as large as it was during 2006–2021. However, the overall number of fires has increased by more than four times.

The figures surpassed the previous record of 2017 by 56 per cent. Presently, over a million hectares of land could be destroyed by wildfires this year as anticipated by the current trends, The Guardian reported.

The statistics were made public after the European Union’s Copernicus atmosphere monitoring service (Cams), issued a warning last week stating that there was a severe fire hazard in Western Europe. According to Cams, active fires were higher than average in Spain, France, and Portugal in July and August.

Nearly 10,000 people were evacuated during the Landiras fire in France. It burned through 14,000 hectares in July. Similarly, a major wildfire that had been raging for a week in Serra da Estrela was brought under control by Portugal on Saturday.

However, in Spain, a fire in Zaragoza forced the evacuation of eight communities and 1,500 people after the authorities claimed that the fire was out of control and had destroyed nearly 8,000 hectares. According to Effis’s stats, the overall area burned in wildfires so far this year is nearly four times the nation’s full-year average of 66,965 hectares since 2006.

Raging wildfires might push Europe towards record-breaking destruction, says experts

Spain's medieval reservoirs, bath houses and churches are facing the impact of climate change. The Iberian peninsula is reeling under one of its drier seasons in 1200 years.

WION Climate Tracker: Spain's ancient water reservoirs dry up

If you are planning to beat the heat in Spain with a cold drink, there are chances that your drink might not be cold enough because restaurants and bars in Spain are running out of ice.

WION Climate Tracker: Spain orders temperature limit for businesses

Many southern Spanish hillsides, which are usually unsuited for other crops, are covered with olive trees. Olive oil has been a crucial component of the Mediterranean diet for thousands of years. The world's biggest exporter of olive oil, Spain, has been endangered by intense heat waves and a lack of rain. According to data, the cost of refined olive oil in Jaen, in southern Spain's Andalusia area, increased by 8.3% in June compared to the same month in 2016.

World's largest olive oil producer

According to data made public by the Observatory of Economic Complexity (OEC), Spain is the world's largest producer and exporter of olive oil. Spain made a staggering $167 million from the export of olive oil in 2020. In that year, Spain was responsible for nearly 43% of all olive oil exports worldwide. A little more than 20% of total olive oil exports came from Italy, which was less than half of what Spain exported that year.

Intense heatwaves

The world's leading exporter of olive oil is at risk of having less production due to intense heatwaves and a lack of rain, according to Spain's agriculture minister. Nearly half of the world's production of olive oil comes from Spain. Vegetable oil prices were anticipated to stay high as a result of the setback and ongoing supply disruptions of Ukrainian sunflower oil, according to Planas.

Greatest drought in 70 years

The greatest drought to hit northern Italy in 70 years is threatening supplies of olive oil. According to market sources, the production of olive oil in Italy may have decreased by 20–30 per cent from the previous year. The drought is also anticipated to result in lower apricot, peach, and pear crop yields. According to a recent assessment by the organisation, the quality may also suffer because growers will have to harvest the fruit before it is fully developed. Some farmers could be tempted to begin irrigating their fields, but doing so would further drain already-strained reservoirs.

Other crops also affected

At a time when global food prices are almost at record highs as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which sent the price of wheat and other crops spiralling, the scorching weather throughout most of Europe also poses a threat to disrupt grain output. Due to the high temperatures and little rainfall, Planas predicts that Spain's total grain production, which includes corn, wheat, and barley, might fall by 13 per cent this year to 17.5 million tonnes.

Shift to sunflower oil

According to research published last month in the journal Nature Geoscience, the Iberian Peninsula is already at its driest point in 1,200 years, and winter rains are predicted to become even less frequent. As a result, Spain and Portugal's agricultural sectors are among the most vulnerable in Europe. Despite the fact that farmers have extended the planting area for sunflower crops by 25% in an effort to increase sunflower oil production after the Russian invasion of Ukraine disrupted imports, Fernandez cautioned the weather could also have an impact on these crops.

Explained: How deadly heatwaves are affecting Spain's 'green gold' harvest

There are a number of countries around the world that are looking to limit their energy consumption, but Spain has come up with a concrete plan. The Spanish authorities have decided to implement a new set of energy-saving measures which states that the heating in public areas cannot be set above 19C, and air conditioning cannot be set above 27C. The order, which will be implemented in a week’s time, includes places like public buildings, shopping centres, cinemas, theatres, rail stations and airports, according to The Guardian. According to the new order, the institutions will also display signs which explain the new initiatives and their implications.

The ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine has resulted in European Union countries looking to decrease their dependence on Russian oil exports and this decision can play a huge role. Spain has already agreed to reduce 7-8 per cent of gas use and that is a reason behind these measures.

“[This] lays out a series of measures to save energy and use it more efficiently, which are urgent and necessary when it comes to reducing energy consumption in general and reducing our dependence on energy outside the Spanish economy,” the decree said according to AFP.

While the current measures will be valid till November 2023, the Spanish government is looking to make this a regular practice, but it has faced criticism from the opposition parties.

It has also suggested public administrations and big companies could encourage people to work from home to save energy on transport and in buildings.

Following similar incidents in Britain and France, Spanish police are investigating a string of cases of women being injected with possibly spiked syringes in crowded clubs.

Raising fears that sexual predators might have found a variant on spiking drinks to prey on women, the attacks have been reported to police or on social media over the past few weeks.

According to the Spanish police, no traces of drugs or other toxic products have been detected and no cases of related sexual violence reported.

However, 23 cases of 'needle spiking' have been reported in Catalonia and 12 in the Basque Country.

After France, Spain reports string of cases of 'needle spiking' attacks on women

Days after Spain's equality ministry started a body positivity campaign, encouraging women of all shapes and sizes to go to the beach without worrying about how their bodies might look to someone else -- it has run into a major controversy. Reportedly, three British women have come forward and objected to their photographs being used in the campaign's promotional material.

Sixty-year-old Juliet FitzPatrick from Southern England, a cancer survivor who has had a mastectomy stated that one of the women in the advertisement could be her.

Interestingly enough, the said woman in the advertisement also has had a mastectomy done and bore an eerily similar resemblance to Juliet.

It is pertinent to note that mastectomy is a surgery which involves removing all breast tissue as a means of treating or preventing breast cancer

Meanwhile, Nyome Nicholas-Williams and Sian Green-Lord are the other two women who have stated that their pictures have been used in the poster without their consent.

While Nyome remarked that the Spanish government had stolen an image from her Instagram account, Sian stated that not only her image was used without consent but her prosthetic leg was also edited out, in a campaign that seeks to promote body positivity.

As reported by WION, the Spanish ministry had tweeted the poster as part of its body positivity campaign, showcasing five women of all sizes and shapes, with the Spanish words “El verano también es nuestro” (which translates to “Summer is ours too”) sprawled across the top of the image.
