On Monday, the Spanish police seized three underwater drones that were helping drug gangs transport vast quantities of drugs from Morocco to Spain, reported AFP. The drones are semi-submersible, and each one has the capacity to transport nearly 200kg of drugs across the strait of Gibraltar.

The police also broke down the gang that was allegedly responsible for manufacturing the drones. The gang's primary customers are criminal gangs in Denmark, France, Italy, and Spain, according to the police.

In a statement, the police added that the so-called "drone submarines" in the making process were seized, and eight people suspected of the crime were arrested in Spain.

"The three, two of which were being built and one which was practically completed, was to be delivered to French drug traffickers for transporting large quantities of cocaine," AFP quoted the police.

Basque city in Spain is drafting legislation to charge those needing rescue for costs incurred in cases of negligence or recklessness, as the rescue cost in April racked up to an estimated €6,000 (£5,200), as reported by The Guardian.

“I would love to never charge a single euro, pound or dollar,” says Martín Ibabe, the city councillor responsible for citizen safety, as reported by The Guardian. “The objective here is to prevent these types of incidents from happening. The confrontational nature of this law is aimed at making people think twice.”

The city has also been beset by what Ibabe calls “clear acts of irresponsibility”, including a tourist left stranded by tides after he dozed off on a stone jetty and a drunken woman who scrambled down the rocks in an area known for its ferocious waves.

The city began drafting the bill two years ago. Recently there has been a rise in cases of reckless swimming, and people ignore signs stating the beach is closed.

Some critics say that people might feel hesitant before calling for help.

Ibabe brushes off the worries, saying that the city would exercise caution in applying the law. “If there is the slightest doubt that it might have been an accident, we won’t charge people,” he adds.

At least 23 African migrants seeking to cross into Spain died in a stampede. The incident happened after thousands of migrants tried to breach Morocco's border fence with Spanish enclave of Melilla. During this, a violent two-hour skirmish broke out between migrants and border officers

Deadly migrant rush kills 23 | Migrants tried to cross into Spain

The Spanish prime minister on Saturday described a deadly migrant rush on the enclave of Melilla from Morocco as an attack on Spain's "territorial integrity", as human rights activists demanded an investigation.

At least 23 African migrants died in the latest drama on the doors of the European Union, when around 2,000 mostly sub-Saharan African migrants approached the Moroccan border with the tiny territory at dawn on Friday.

More than 500 people managed to enter a border control area after cutting a fence with shears, Melilla authorities said in a statement.

Moroccan officials on Friday said 18 migrants had died during the rush or succumbed to their injuries, some of which came from falling from the top of the barrier. On Saturday, they revised the toll upwards to 23 after five of those injured died.

More than 20 migrants and two security force personnel remain in hospital Saturday in the cities of Nador and nearby Oujda, they said.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said the incident was a "violent and organised attack by mafias who traffic in human beings, against a Spanish territory".

But Morocco's AMDH human rights group said it was "a true catastrophe that shows the consequences of the latest Moroccan-Spanish entente", just weeks after the two sides resolved a year-long diplomatic rift.

'Investigate this tragedy'

The death toll is by far the worst recorded in years of attempts by migrants to cross into Melilla, one of Spain's North African enclaves which have the EU's only land borders on the continent.

Images on Spanish media on Friday showed exhausted migrants lying on the pavement in Melilla, some with bloodied hands and torn clothes.

By Saturday, calm had returned to the border area, with Moroccan security forces lightly deployed and no migrants to be seen.

The International Organization for Migration and the UN refugee agency expressed "grave concern at the lives lost and the number of injured".

The agencies reminded member states of the "need in all circumstances to prioritise the safety of migrants and refugees, to avoid excessive use of force and to respect their fundamental rights."

In Morocco, the AMDH demanded a "comprehensive, quick and serious enquiry", while the Democratic Labour Organisation (ODT) trade union urged the government "to investigate this tragedy and do what is needed" both for migrants and police.

In Spain, Sanchez's left-wing coalition partner Podemos also called for a probe.

Residents fear attacks

Residents of the Barrio Chino neighbourhood on the Moroccan side of the barrier said they were in shock.

"This is the most violent attempt to cross into Melilla that I've ever seen," said Rachid Nejjari, a waiter in a cafe near the heavily fortified border fence.

"I saw migrants armed with sticks and iron bars... I was afraid of being attacked."

Friday's was the first mass incursion since Spain mended a year-long rift by backing Morocco's autonomy plan for the disputed Western Sahara region, scrapping its decades-long stance of neutrality.

Sanchez then visited Rabat, and the two governments hailed a "new stage" in relations.

The row had begun when Madrid allowed Brahim Ghali, leader of Western Sahara's pro-independence Polisario Front, to be treated for Covid-19 in a Spanish hospital in April 2021.

A month later, some 10,000 migrants surged across the Moroccan border into the Ceuta enclave as border guards looked the other way, in what was widely seen as a punitive gesture by Rabat.

Rabat wants Western Sahara to have autonomous status under Moroccan sovereignty but the Polisario insists on a UN-supervised referendum on self-determination as agreed in a 1991 ceasefire deal.

Migration 'security threat'

In the days just before Morocco and Spain patched up their ties, there were several attempted mass crossings of migrants into Melilla, including one involving 2,500 people, the largest such attempt on record. Nearly 500 made it across.

The mending of ties has meant a drop in migrant arrivals in Spain, notably in the Canary Islands.

The number of migrants who reached the Canary Islands in April was 70 percent lower than in February, government figures show.

Sanchez said earlier this month that "Spain will not tolerate any use of the tragedy of illegal immigration as a means of pressure."

Spain will seek to have "irregular migration" listed as one of the security threats on NATO's southern flank when the alliance gathers for a summit in Madrid on June 29-30.

Over the years, thousands of migrants have attempted to gain entry to the Spanish enclaves by climbing the barriers, swimming along the coast or hiding in vehicles.

The two territories are protected by fences fortified with barbed wire, video cameras and watchtowers.

The body of John McAfee, software entrepreneur, is in a Spanish morgue even a year after his death as legal case from his family is yet to be resolved, said his lawyer.

McAfee launched world's first commercial anti-virus software in 1987. He was found dead, aged 75 years, last year (June 23) in his prison cellin Spain. He was found dead just hours after Spanish court gave a go-ahead for his extradition to the US on tax evasion charges.

The British-American mogul had been jailed in the Barcelona-area Brians 2 jail for eight months following his arrest after years on the run from US authorities.

In autopsy, it was determined that he died by suicide. Prison authorities said he had already attempted to kill himself four months before dying.

Shortly after his death, McAfee's widow said he was not suicidal and that she would seek "answers."

"It's difficult to put into words what life has been like this past year," Janice McAfee tweeted on Thursday, calling on users to sign an online petition "to help pressure" Spanish authorities to release McAfee's remains.

The petition has been signes by 1,365 people so far. It calls for independent autopsy "to determine if the official cause of death can be challenged or investigated privately".

McAfee's family considered the original autopsy to be incomplete and asked for further checks, which were denied by a local judge, said the late entrepreneur's lawyer Javier Villalba on Wednesday. The family appealed that decision.

The body of John McAfee, software entrepreneur, is in a Spanish morgue even a year after his death as legal case from his family is yet to be resolved, said his lawyer.

Shortly after his death, McAfee's widow said he was not suicidal and that she would seek "answers." "It's difficult to put into words what life has been like this past year," Janice McAfee tweeted on Thursday, calling on users to sign an online petition "to help pressure" Spanish authorities to release McAfee's remains. A judge then ruled that McAfee's body could not be handed to the family until their appeal was resolved, the lawyer said. John McAfee's body still in Spanish morgue even a year after death

The salty sea breeze, a walk on the beach when amber waves play around your feet on a perfect evening is perhaps everyone's idea of an ideal first date. Nothing can match the feeling of warmth around your feet and the one in your heart.

But just to be clear about nature of liquids splashing around and to deter everyone who is planning to make an unwarranted contribution to the endless sea, a Spanish city has forbidden everyone from urinating in the sea. For those whose swashbuckling urge to break rules overpowers everything else, there would be a fine of 645 euros.

The message is clear, no pee in the sea, or your wallet is relieved of money.

Name of the Spanish city is Vigo. It is in the Galicia region of Spain. The city council has, quite rightly, said that urinating in the sea or on the beach is ‘an infringement of hygiene and sanitary regulations.’

But one has to go when one has to go. What to do about that? For those bursting for some relief, the public toilets to be installed by the city council would be of great help.

Let's hope that the hefty fine deters those who take short cut to unparalleled freedom.

Taking a cue from other nations in Europe, now Spain looks to install sound level monitors at 11 areas in Barcelona city. It is a major tourist destination and has several streets and plazas, which can get noisy at times. Now, it looks to check the troubling trend. Barcelona city councillor for climate emergency and ecological transition, Eloi Badia, said, “It’s an absolute priority. Noise pollution – with all of its sleep disorders, pathologies and stress – is one of the most important public health issues we have in the city, second only to air pollution.”

After the installation, the officials will check the level of the sound at the locations of the monitors. The acceptable decibel limits for any area may vary on several factors like the width of the street or the distribution of buildings.

“If the limits are exceeded during two consecutive weekends, the area will be confirmed as acoustically stressed. In that case, the district will have to present an action plan that can be worked on with neighbours, restaurants and others to try to mitigate the damage that is being done. Our goal is to have a much quieter, more peaceful and friendly city,” Badia said.
