‘All bodies are beach bodies’: As ‘bikini’ season arrives, Spain launches body positivity campaign

A pioneering drone lifeguard service rolled out across Spanish beaches helped save the life of a 14-year-old boy this month as he struggled against a powerful tide off a beach in Valencia.

Tech in Trend: Drone helps save a 14-year-old boy from drowning on a Spanish beach

A drone lifeguard has saved a life of a drowing 14-year-old boy in Valencia, Spain. As the boy struggled against powerful waves off the beach, the drone dropped a lifejacket with the help of which the boy was able to stay afloat till a physical lifeguard team arrived at the scene.

"When we arrived what we saw was a kid that was in very bad shape, with almost no energy to keep floating, so I sent over the life vest," Miguel Angel Pedrero, drone pilot for General Drones, the firm that supplies the technology, told Reuters.

"Because of the heavy waves it was a complicated manoeuvre, but we finally managed to give him the vest and he could float until the lifeguards reached him by jet ski."

General Drones is a Valencia-based company. It started supporting Spanish lifeguard staff in 2017 in Sagunto, a town just north of Valencia. Now, it has more than 30 pilots and their drones working with the lifeguards at 22 beaches across Spain. The teams provide rapid reaction support during moments before lifeguards can phtsically reach the person who is drowning.

"These extra seconds are vital in some cases and also allows the rescue teams to approach the person more calmly and cautiously," Pedrero added.

The 14-year-old boy has not been identified. After his rescue, the boy was sent to local hospital. He was provided oxygen in the ambulance. The boy was sent home after 24 hours

According to numbers with Royal Spanish Lifesaving and Rescue Federation, 140 people died due to drowning in first six months of this year alone. The number is 55 per cent more than that during the same period last year.

The heatwave has caused over 1,700 deaths on the Iberian peninsula alone, the World Health Organization’s European office said on Friday (July 22). The Iberian Peninsula is a mountainous region that is most associated with Spain and Portugal.

Not just in Spain and Portugal, the unprecedented heatwave has caused death and destruction across Europe. “Heat kills. Over the past decades, hundreds of thousands of people have died as a result of extreme heat during extended heatwaves, often with simultaneous wildfires,” WHO regional director for Europe Hans Kluge said in a statement.

“This year, we have already witnessed more than 1,700 needless deaths in the present heatwave in Spain and Portugal alone,” Kluge added.

As quoted by the news agency AFP, the regional director further added that exposure to extreme heat “often exacerbates pre-existing health conditions”. The official added that “individuals at either end of life’s spectrum – infants and children, and older people – are at particular risk”.

In what can be described as a bizarre event, hundreds of migratory white storks bound for Africa in the winter months, have dropped anchor in the garbage landfills of Spain and settled there for good. It is being reported that the long-legged birds have figured out the cheat code for migration.

Earlier, these birds used to take the long, arduous journey from Europe to Africa through the dangerous Strait of Gibraltar, where strong winds, often caused problems and led to the death of many birds.

It is estimated that a single landfill in Spain receives 200 tonnes to 300 tonnes of food waste per day. The storks quickly pounce upon the fresh batch and receive their fill for the day.

What started as an aberration has now turned into a phenomenon as over 70 per cent of storks have stopped with the migration. According to a 2020 survey, the population of white storks in Spain stood at 36,217; meaning, more and more storks were starting to permanently settle in the European country.

Firefighters across southern Europe battled on Sunday to control huge wildfires in countries including Spain, Greece and France, where thousands of people have been evacuated in soaring temperatures.

France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Morocco battle wildfires amid intense heat

A number of countries in Western Europe have been experiencing extreme heat waves in the past few weeks and the wildfires in France, Portugal and Spain has only added to the already volatile situation.
“It was really scary to see how quickly the fire spread. Just in the blink of an eye, a new bush began burning. It was a matter of seconds,” Seoane told Associated Press in an interview on Monday.

The public transport prices on state-owned service have come down to half as a response to the rapid increase in inflation rates across Sprain. However, to make it easier for passengers, the Spanish government has decided to offer a 100 percent discount on train journeys.

WION Fineprint: Spain government makes train journey free of cost

Inflation has been worrying countries in Europe. As countries ponder their options, Spain appears to be in an action mode. A government scheme is making some train journeys totally free.

The government decided earlier this week that travel across parts of railway network Renfe will be free. Renfe is a rail network owned by the state. The scheme would come into effect on September 1 and will continue till the end of the year. The government has already announced 30 per cent reduction in tarnsport fares. This include metros, buses and trams.

Free railway journey scheme will be applicable for multi-trip ticket journeys on cercanías (commuter services) and media distancia (medium-distance routes, less than 300 km). Season ticket holders in Spain are expected to benefit mainly in this scheme but tourists who buy multi-journey train tickets can take advantage of the scheme as well.

“I’d like the people of Spain to know that I’m fully aware of the daily difficulties that most people have,” Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, said on Tuesday. “I know salaries cover less and less and that it’s difficult to get to the end of the month.”

“This measure encourages using public transport to guarantee a safe, reliable, comfortable, economic and sustainable means of doing the daily commute amid the extraordinary increase of energy and fuel prices,” the Spanish Ministry of Transport said in a statement.

Archaeologists in Spain said on Friday they had found an ancient jawbone which could help them look into the face of some of the earliest human ancestors in Europe. The surprise find, which could be about 1.4 million years old, could also give vital clues to the evolution of the human face over the millennia, the team from the Atapuerca Foundation said, as reported by Reuters.

José María Bermúdez de Castro, one of the team's coordinators, said, "What we can say is that we have found a fossil that's very important and interesting that belongs to one of the first populations that arrived in Europe, maybe later we will find older ones, but at this moment it is a sample of a representative of one of the oldest populations that colonised the European continent."
