Spain divided over bill that allows transgender people over 16 to change gender in ID

Two women in Spain have lost a landmark challenge to the sexual abuse in the country's meat industry after a court acquitted a manager accused of sexual advances and using the threat of dismissal to demand sex. A report by the Guardian on Thursday said the incidents were alleged to have taken place at an abattoir (slaughterhouse) north of Barcelona.

The women, who have worked in the meat industry, brought up the case and appealed the court's decision, claiming the harassment began back in 2016.

Montserrat Castañé, the victim, said that she was cleaning the facility when the manager, who worked for a company subcontracted by the plant demanded a kiss which she refused.

This incident was followed by four years of harassment and unwanted touching, according to Castañé. The victim also alleged that the manager demanded sex and warned she could be fired if she did not comply, the Guardian report said.

The second victim has refused to identify herself and has not spoken on the court's verdict.

In 2020, Castañé and the second woman filed a police complaint after they had raised the issue with the company that owned the meat processing plant and the subcontracted company. The manager was later accused of two counts of sexual harassment.

However two years later, a judge at a court in Manresa, absolved him of all charges, the report said. The judge noted that there were no ''direct witnesses or references to the facts presented."

The subcontracted company, where the manager worked, was also absolved of any liability.

The judge's decision also pointed out that it was striking that the victims took years to file a complaint against the manager, according to the report.

A commercial plane had to make an emergency landing at Barcelona's El Prat airport on Wednesday (December 7) after a reported medical event on board. According to the Spanish government, as soon as the plane landed, 28 passengers fled across the tarmac. Police initially detained 14 people, including a pregnant woman who officials claim pretended that her water had broken, prompting the emergency landing, the government said. The police arrested two people later. One of them was apprehended inside the airport while the other was nabbed outside. The pregnant woman was checked in hospital and found not to be in labour, the government said. Twelve other people are yet to be located. The plane was flying from Morocco to Turkey and was operated by Turkey's Pegasus Airlines. Five of those detained were immediately put back on the plane while at least eight are to be deported to Morocco. The plane was carrying a total of 228 passengers from Casablanca to Istanbul.
On Tuesday (December 06), Morocco were up against 2010 winners Spain in the Round of 16 clash during the FIFA World Cup 2022 edition. After the regulation and extra time saw both sides being levelled at 0-0, the game went to the penalty shootout -- the second time in the ongoing edition in Qatar -- and led to Morocco stunning the ex-champions with a 3-0 deficit. With this performance, Morocco became the first African nation to win a penalty shoot-out in FIFA World Cup history. In addition, it became only the fourth African side (after Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002 and Ghana in 2010) to enter the last eight in the showpiece event.

Talking about the game, it was a closely-fought encounter where the European nation had plenty of chances but missed them all. They took 13 shots but after a full 120’ minutes, both teams remained at 0-0 scoreline. The Atlas Lions upped the ante in the last few minutes during the extra time before scoring three in the penalty shootout, out of their four attempts, to make it to the next round.

The draw means Germany's hopes of reaching the knockout phase are not over yet. The Germans received an unlikely lifeline when Costa Rica beat Japan and a defeat by Spain would send them out.
