An estimated 250,000 people protested in support of the ailing public health system, which is suffering shortages of staff and equipment. Protesters thronged the Plaza Cibeles Area in the city centre, where they chanted slogans and waved flags. They alleged that the conservative regional government is destroying this system. Protesters say that the government is dismantling public health services and favouring private health providers. The Madrid government has been criticised by the public health workers since past few years. The criticism rose further during the Covid-19 pandemic over poor staffing in hospitals and primary healthcare centres. However, the government has denied extending any favours to the private health sector.

A Spanish high court ruled in favour of a man who was fined for walking naked through the streets of Aldaia town in the region of Valencia, and later tried to attend a court hearing in the buff. Releasing a statement, the high court said it struck down an appeal against a lower court's decision earlier to annul fines handed out by Valencia's regional government to 29-year-old Alejandro Colomar for being naked in the streets of Aldaia, news agency Reuters reported on Friday (February 3).

The court, however, acknowledged a "legal vacuum" in Spanish law concerning public nudity.

It pointed out that no local law in town prohibited nudism and nor could Colomar's nudity be considered to fall within a law that prohibits "acts of obscene exhibitionism". The court said in the ruling that Colomar "limited himself to remaining or circulating naked at different times in two different streets of Aldaia", adding his behaviour did not imply an "alteration of citizen security, tranquility or public order."

Speaking to the news agency Reuters on Friday (February 3), Colomar said he began stripping off in public in 2020 and has received more support than insults when walking about naked. Colomar said he started appearing naked in public after an argument with a woman when he took off his shirt while exercising. The 29-year-old added that he understood she could not do the same, but blamed society for it and started going nude.

“The fine does not make any sense, I was accused of obscene exhibitionism, which according to the dictionary has a sexual intention and has nothing to do with what I was doing. What I was accused of, having children there, in case there was a sexual intention was to go to jail, not a fine. But it had no relation to what I was doing,” he said.

On Friday, Colomar was filmed arriving at the court wearing just a pair of hiking boots before being ordered to put more clothes on to enter the building. During the hearing, he argued that the fines infringed on his right to ideological freedom.

Public nudity in Spain has been legal since 1988. The Reuters report said that anyone can walk naked down a street without being arrested.

However, some regions such as Valladolid and Barcelona have introduced their laws to regulate nudism, especially away from the beach. Last year, Cadiz city reversed a law that prohibited nudism on its urban beaches.

Spain: Police offloads boxes of Cocaine from cattle ship

The Spanish police have seized 4.5 tonnes (4,500 kilograms) of cocaine worth $114 million (105 million euros) after they raided a cattle ship off the Canary Islands on Tuesday (January 24). The police said on Saturday (January 28) that the Orion V- Togolese-flagged cargo ship that transported cattle from Latin America to the Middle East, was under surveillance for more than two years. The ship was previously checked and searched but no drugs were found despite the presence of sufficient clues, the police added, as per a report by the news agency AFP on Saturday.

A joint operation on Tuesday- which included the Spanish police, the American Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Maritime Analysis and Operations Centre for narcotics (MAOC-N), located the cocaine hidden inside a container used to feed the cattle. Visuals shared by the Spanish police showed officers walking inside the Orion V, discharging the packs of drugs, opening the packages and weighing them.

"In this operation 62 miles off the Canary Islands, the cargo ship Orion V was intercepted while having more than 4500 kilos of cocaine. Their 28 crew members from nine different nationalities have been arrested. After inspecting the ship common areas, officers detected in a feed silo an undetermined number of packages commonly used for cocaine traffic," Spanish police spokesperson Maria Buyo said on Thursday, news agency Reuters reported on Saturday.

In mid-January this year, the police raided another Togolese-flagged vessel ''Blume'' in the southeast of the Canary Islands. The same amount of cocaine- 4.5 tonnes- was found here as well. The police said that in total, nine tonnes of drugs had been seized this month, as per the AFP report on Saturday.

Also this month, the Spanish police busted a criminal gang that smuggled more than 5,000 tonnes of hazardous electronic waste from the Canary Islands to several African nations. According to Spain's finance ministry, the police arrested 43 suspected of having illegally shipped 331 containers of used electronics to Africa over the last two years.

The app-based food delivery startup Glovo has been hit with a fresh fine from Spain's labour ministry of 57 million euros ($62 million) for breaking labour laws, the agency announced on Tuesday (January 24). Glovo, which is owned by the German company Delivery Hero, received a penalty for not providing its riders with proper employment agreements as required by a 2021 legislation and for hiring roughly 800 undocumented immigrants without work licences.

The so-called Rider Law, which went into effect in August 2021, requires that couriers who transport food, typically on bicycles and motorcycles, be recognised as workers rather than being treated as independent contractors as they were previously.

It is an important element of European legislation that specifically governs the condition of delivery workers, who commute on motorbikes and bicycles and whose numbers have increased recently despite hazardous working conditions.

The Spanish government has called for a second emergency crisis committee meeting which includes domestic violence experts and will also be attended by the country’s equality, interior and justice ministries, on Friday (January 27). This comes in light of the recent murders of six women and one 8-year-old girl since the beginning of this year, said Spain’s Equality Minister, Irene Montero, on Monday.

According to a report by the Guardian, Spain’s government is also considering proposals which would allow authorities to inform victims of domestic violence if their partners have been convicted of violent offences against women in the past. Last month, a crisis committee emergency meeting was convened after the murder of 11 women.

“This month of January, six women and an 8-year-old girl have been murdered due to sexist violence…we (the equality ministry) convene the Crisis Committee this Friday at 10 am to analyse each case in detail, find out what has gone wrong, improve coordination and ALWAYS arrive on time,” said Montero, on Twitter.

The equality minister is referring to the alleged murder of a 45-year-old woman and her 8-year-old daughter in the Spanish province of Valladolid, on Monday, reported the Guardian. This was five days after a 38-year-old woman was allegedly killed in the Spanish province of Catalan. The meeting on Friday will also be attended by representatives from Spain’s self-governing regions.

In December, the government had also called on the Spanish courts and prosecutors to ramp up the use of electronic bracelets for former partners who had been subjected to restraining orders, in a bid to protect women, said the media report. “Since 2009, when these bracelets were brought in, no woman wearing one has been murdered,” said the country’s justice minister, Pilar Llop, last month.

The electronic bracelets system was introduced in the country over a decade ago to protect women against their aggressors where the police track both the victims of domestic violence as well as their assailant. Furthermore, as per reports, the authorities are promptly alerted in case of different scenarios like if the battery of the device runs out or the aggressor tries to remove the tag or they try to enter the victim’s safety perimeter.

The report also noted how the number of women murdered by their partners or former partners accounting for the recent incidents has reached nearly 1,200 in the last two decades when the government first began recording such incidents. Furthermore, 50 children have reportedly been killed in domestic violence attacks in the same time period.

Thousands gathered in Spain's capital Madrid to protest against the leftist government of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Saturday in a rally supported by the far-right party Vox. The protest has been staged in the year when elections are to be held.

The protesters were seen waving yellow and red Spanish flags and demanding PM Sanchez to step down. Some were also seen holding signs with the Socialist premier's photo and calling him a "traitor".

For the rally, around 30,000 people gathered at Cibeles Square in Madrid, as per the delegation of the central government in Madrid.

The organisers claimed around 700,000 people took part in the protests. Dozens of people belonging to the right-leaning civil society groups had called the protests which were supported by the conservative parties, which included Vox and Popular Party (PP), the country's main opposition conservative party.

The right is upset by the decision of the government to abolish the crime of sedition under which the court had convicted nine separatist leaders for their role in the abortive secession bid of Catalonia region in 2017.

The authorities replaced it with an offence which carried a lower prison sentence.

Conservatives have also expressed their anger over the flagship law against sexual violence in which penalties for committing the crime of rape were toughened but sentences for other sexual offences were eased.

While addressing the reporters before the rally started, Vox leader Santiago Abascal denounced "the worst government in history" which "has divided Spaniards and freed rapists and coup leaders".

22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal wore a puzzled look during his first-round match at the Australian Open when one of his racquets went missing. During the first set, with the scoreline reading 4-3, both players went to their respective seats to refresh before a changeover. However, Nadal was left perplexed as one of his racquets was missing. Agitated about the racquet, Nadal told the ballboy standing beside his seat, “It’s this one for restringing, not that [one you took]. I need the racket back.” Nadal told the chair umpire about the quandary who could be seen using the phone to request that the racquet be returned to the Spaniard. After looking a bit tense, Nadal saw the funny side of the incident and went towards his opponent Jack Draper and laughingly informed him about the situation. "The ballboy took my racquet" 😂 A definite first for Rafa!#AusOpen • #AO2023 pic.twitter.com/T4xqN4ZLBd — #AusOpen (@AustralianOpen) January 16, 2023 × Commentator John Fitzgerald joked at the sequence of events and said, "Goodness me, that's a big mistake and he knows. He knows the tension, he knows the sequence he wants to use the racquets in." Fitzgerald's co-commentator Mark Petsch added, “You don’t often get a first in a Rafa match after all these years, but that is definitely the first that that would’ve happened.” WATCH: Rafael Nadal cannot hold back tears as rival Roger Federer bids emotional farewell to tennis It wasn't clear if Nadal got his racquet back but the distraction certainly didn't help him. The 36-year-old lost the second set 6-2 after having won the opening set comfortably against his British rival. Nadal, akin to most top tennis players is famous for his various idiosyncrasies and rituals before a tennis match. His trademark style of adjusting the shorts, touching the left and right shoulder, tucking the hair behind the ears and tweaking the nose and lastly touching the cheek prior to serving is a sight that most tennis lovers have grown accustomed to seeing over the years. New environmental legislation in Spain will require tobacco businesses to pay for cleaning up the millions of cigarette ends that consumers throw away each year, as reported by the Guardian. The decision, which takes effect this Friday, is one of a number of policies intended to lessen waste and boost recycling. It forbids the use of cotton buds, expanded polystyrene cups, plastic straws, single-use plastic cutlery, and plates, as well as restricts the use of plastic food packaging.

The rule complies with a European Union directive that restricts the use of single-use plastics and attempts to make polluters responsible for cleaning up the damage they cause.

The public will also be educated by cigarette producers to avoid leaving cigarette waste in the open, although it is still unknown how the clean-up will be carried out or how much it will cost. According to a Catalan study, the price ranged from €12 to €21 per resident each year, or up to €1 billion (£880 million).

As Covid cases continue to mount in China, countries across the world are opting for precautionary measures to avoid a repeat of the first wave. France, Spain, South Korea and Israel are the recent entrants to the list of countries to have announced different Covid curbs. In France, passengers travelling from China will have to show a negative report of Covid test done less than 48 hours prior to boarding the flight. Meanwhile, in South Korea, Chinese passengers will have to present a negative PCR or antigen test before boarding the flight. Afterwards, on their arrival in South Korea, the passengers will have to undergo a PCR test. As for Spain, Chinese travellers can skip the tests if they are fully vaccinated. In Israel, the authorities have directed foreign airlines to not accept any Chinese passenger if they fail to provide a negative Covid test report. Previously, Malaysia, India, US and Japan had put different measures in place to screen Chinese travellers. WATCH | Global alarm over China's Covid surge, travel curbs imposed on Chinese travelers × While cases are on an unprecedented rise, the Xi Jinping regime has let go of its draconian 'zero-Covid' policy, primarily responsible for the current predicament. The countries are anxious about Chinese travellers as the country is opaque regarding its Covid numbers and the Chinese vaccines and their efficacy continue to divide the scientists. Such has been the situation that the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Friday urged Beijing to release real-time data on the prevailing situation in the country. “WHO again asked for regular sharing of specific and real-time data on the epidemiological situation," said the global health body before adding, "Including more genetic sequencing data, data on disease impact including hospitalisations, ICU admissions and deaths, and data on vaccinations delivered and vaccination status, especially in vulnerable people and those over 60 years old." The Spanish government announced on Tuesday that VAT will be completely removed for all basic food items in order to control the cost of living crisis. According to media reports, the package of measures is roughly worth $10.6 billion with additional tax cuts for other necessary items.

"For six months, we will reduce VAT on all basic foods from 4.0 percent to 0.0 percent," Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said at the end-of-the-year press conference according to AFP.

“VAT on oil and pasta would also be reduced from 10 percent to five percent”, he added.

Sanchez said that the “basic food items” currently include bread, milk, eggs, cheese, fruit and vegetables, and cereals and he also announced a one-off payment of 200 euros to "families with incomes lower than 27,000 euros" in order to simplify the situation for the lower-income groups.

The cost of living crisis has been brewing in parts of Europe as part of the Ukraine-Russia war and since the start of the crisis, the Spanish government has spent in excess of $45 billion.

The inflation in Spain has also gone down considerably in the past few months and it currently stands at 6.8 percent – in comparison to over 10 per cent back in July. Meanwhile, Spain has already extended the discount on electricity as well as gas prices in the past six months. The scarcity of fuel in the wake of Russia’s decision to stop supplies has already impacted Spain’s economy massively.

At least seven people died after a bus skidded off a bridge and plunged into an overflowing river in north-western Spain.

The bus was travelling from Lugo to Vigo when it fell from a height of about 30m (98ft) into the fast-flowing river on Christmas eve (Saturday).

On Monday, the officials pulled out two survivors —the vehicle’s 63-year-old driver and a female passenger— from the Lerez river in the north-western Galicia region, where a body of a woman was found.

According to local media, the passengers had just visited loved ones at a prison in central Galicia.

Though the exact reason for the crash is still being investigated, officials believe that bad weather may have been one of the reasons.

Primary investigation revealed that the bus driver tested negative for alcohol and drugs.

The rescue operation was initially focused near the village of Pedre, near Galicia's regional capital of Santiago de Compostela, on Christmas Day (Sunday) after finding six bodies.

But the operation was resumed after one surviving passenger said a friend she had been travelling with was not on the official list of victims.

A Guardia Civil police spokesman told AFP news agency that the woman had not been reported missing as nobody had been waiting for her. Her body was spotted by a helicopter in the river on Monday morning.

A passing driver had first witnessed the accident, following the emergency services were called in after being informed that a section of the bridge's safety barrier was missing.

Minutes later, one of the survivors called them from inside the bus as it was fast filling with water.
