In the event that he strikes a contentious agreement with separatist parties in the parliament, outgoing Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will continue to hold office. On Friday, September 29, Spain's conservative leader Alberto Nunez-Feijoo lost his bid to become the nation's next prime minister after failing to garner enough votes.

Spain: Conservative Feijoo fails to become new Prime Minister

Spain’s conservative leader Alberto Nunez-Feijoo on Friday (Sep 29) lost his bid to become the country’s next prime minister after failing to secure enough votes, paving the way for outgoing Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to remain in office if he strikes a divisive deal with separatist parties in the parliament.&nbsp;

This comes after the leader of the right-wing Popular Party lost the initial parliamentary vote on Wednesday (Sep 27) and a second one on Friday. While Feijoo’s party won the most votes in Spain’s inconclusive July election, 177 lawmakers in the 350-seat house opposed his bid for PM, and 172 supported it.&nbsp;

During the debate on Wednesday, Feijoo had told lawmakers that he knew he would lose the second vote and said, “You can call it failure if you want.” He added, “Today, I won’t be able to give you a government, but I have given you assurance and hope.”

<h2>What happens now?</h2>

As expected, Feijoo’s bid to form the next government in Spain failed and now all eyes are on the socialist-led bid to form a government.&nbsp;

In the upcoming week, the outgoing PM will be tasked by King Felipe VI with forming a government and will have to pass an identical vote to stay in office before November 27.&nbsp;

If Sanchez also fails to garner a majority in the parliament, Spain will automatically be forced to hold new elections probably sometime in mid-January.&nbsp;

Sanchez, who has been in power for over five years now, remains optimistic about his return to office backed by the far left along with Basque and Catalan regional parties. However, negotiations are said to be underway for his all-important backing of JxCat, a hardline Catalan separatist party.&nbsp;

<h2>What happened before the vote?</h2>

Ahead of the vote on Wednesday, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/in-pics-around-40000-spaniards-protest-against-amnesty-for-catalan-separatists-639271/#this-is-a-disaster-639275">at least 40,000 Spaniards</a> and supporters of the opposition conservative party took to the streets of the capital city of Madrid, on Sunday (Sep 24) against Sanchez amid reports that he plans to grant an amnesty to Catalan separatists in a bid to stay in office.&nbsp;

This comes as in exchange for its support, JxCat wants an amnesty for those facing legal action over the failed 2017 Catalan separatist bid, which sparked Spain’s worst political crisis in decades.&nbsp;

However, Sanchez who held his own rally on Sunday in Gava near Catalonia’s regional capital Barcelona denied mentions of amnesty but said that the Socialists wanted to heal social divisions over the Catalan crisis.&nbsp;

Notably, in 2021, Sanchez granted pardons to nine separatists jailed over their roles in the independence push. Currently, hundreds of activists are facing legal action over the 2017 failed Catalan separatist bid.&nbsp;

Spain: Conservative leader Alberto Nunez-Feijoo fails PM bid, paves way for Pedro Sanchez

Spain, France, Brazil and even Australia are being looked at as possible future sites for NFL regular season games as the league ramps up its efforts to grow the game abroad, a league official said.

The NFL kicks off the first of this season's international games on Sunday at Wembley Stadium in London before the series shifts for the first time to Frankfurt for two games starting Nov. 5.

"A major focus of the league and our clubs has been bringing our game abroad, connecting with fans, and growing the next generation of fans outside the U.S.," NFL executive vice president Peter O'Reilly told Reuters. "It's a long term commitment that we've been at for a while, but now we're doubling down."

While easily the most popular and profitable league in the U.S., the NFL's growth in soccer-obsessed Europe has been more modest.

NFL Europe, which began in 1991 with 10 teams, shuttered in 2007 and was replaced by regular season NFL games starting with a contest at Wembley in October 2007.

O'Reilly said the league now has a firm foothold in London, as well as in Mexico and Germany, and said passionate locals will outnumber expats and American tourists when Wembley hosts its 25th NFL game this weekend.

"This is not a novelty anymore," he said. "It may have been back at the very first game at Wembley, but now this is a really educated fanbase."

About 82% of tickets sold for two London games at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next month went to fans in the United Kingdom, the NFL said.

There are no immediate plans to add a club in London, or an entire four-team division in Europe, but O'Reilly said expanding the game's reach helps lay the groundwork in case that opportunity arises.

And while Saudi Arabia has controversially poured hundreds of millions of dollars into sports including golf and Formula One, O'Reilly said there were no discussions about hosting a game there, although he did not rule out the possibility.

"More broadly, the Middle East is an important part of the world and that's an area where we want continue to grow our fanbase," he said.

The NFL is also looking to add more international players and recently announced it would expand practice squads for all 32 teams to include one player born outside North America as part of its International Player Pathway (IPP) program.

Thirty-seven international players have signed with NFL teams since the program launched in 2017, including Australia's Jordan Mailata, who started at tackle for the Philadelphia Eagles in last season's Super Bowl.

O'Reilly said he expects that number to rise.

"There's a pathway to 150 foreign born players in the NFL in the not-so-distant future," he said.

This season's five international games are:

* Atlanta Falcons vs. Jacksonville Jaguars, Oct. 1, WembleyStadium * Jaguars vs. Buffalo Bills, Oct. 8, Tottenham HotspurStadium * Baltimore Ravens vs. Tennessee Titans, Oct. 15, TottenhamHotspur Stadium * Miami Dolphins vs. Kansas City Chiefs, Nov. 5, FrankfurtStadium * Indianapolis Colts vs. New England Patriots, Nov. 12, Frankfurt Stadium

It had been anticipated for a few months but it looks almost certain that Europe might run out of local olive oil supplies and face frequent shortages. The extreme heatwave across Europe, especially the Mediterranean has damaged harvests for the second year in a row. According to a Guardian report, Europe, the world's largest producer of olive oil has been forced to rely on South America to plug the gap by importing supplies. “Today it is almost physically impossible to buy olive oil. It is sold out,” Walter Zanre, the chief executive of the UK arm of Filippo Berio. Spain, which produces about half of the global olive oil crop, only harvested 750,000 tonnes, more than the 660,000 produced last year but well short of the 1.3 million tonnes target. Consequently, the global production is expected to fall to 2.4 million tonnes. Last year's global demand stood at three million tonnes and it looks highly unlikely that production will reach that level. In Pics | Top nutritionist reveals names of superfoods you need to add to your diet in 2023 Apart from Spain, other important olive oil-growing regions such as Greece, Italy, Portugal, Turkey and Morocco were also hit by extreme weather conditions, affecting the crops. Italy had been planning to produce 350,000 tonnes of olive oil this year but drought and recent hailstorms in the major producing area of Puglia have shattered any such hopes. Meanwhile, Greece is expected to produce only 200,000 tonnes this year which is a third less than last year as fruit fly infestations, in addition to the heatwave cause problems for the farmers. Prices start to rise “We have been saddled with another difficult year. During the early part of the summer we thought things might get better but as the summer has progressed things have got worse," added Zanre. “We’re looking at production rates being cut by half this year. The imbalance in demand and supply has already led to very big price increases, which producers are enjoying but which are very much hurting consumers. Watch | Olive oil demand surges in West Asia × The fear of shortage has already hit the supermarkets. The cost of extra virgin olive oil in southern Spain has shot up to €8.45 per kg this month which is double the price of last year and the highest it has been in the last two decades. Meanwhile, in the UK analysts at Associa remarked that retail prices of olive oil at major supermarkets have climbed 47 per cent in recent weeks. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Spain: Teenager stabs three teachers, two fellow pupils at school; one critical

At least 40,000 Spaniards took to the streets of the capital city of Madrid, on Sunday (September 24) against acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s possible plans to grant an amnesty to Catalan separatists in a bid to stay in office. This comes after Spain’s inconclusive July election and ahead of a debate for opposition party leader Alberto Nunez-Feijoo to become the country’s next PM.&nbsp;

<h2>What is happening in Madrid?</h2>

Media reports citing local officials and organisers said that at least 40,000 supporters of the opposition conservative People’s Party (PP) from across Spain have gathered to attend the rally in Madrid. The images show a crowd of tens of thousands of people waving Spanish flags with placards opposing the possible plans to grant an amnesty to Catalan separatists.

This comes months after Spain’s inconclusive election where Sanchez’s Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) came in second while King Felipe VI tasked Feijoo – whose Popular Party won the most votes – with forming a new government ahead of an investiture vote on September 27.&nbsp;

<h2>What is Sanchez’s plan?</h2>

Acting Spanish PM’s bid to stay in office involves winning the support of exiled former Catalonia leader Carles Puigdemont whose party Junts per Catalunya controls seven seats in parliament.

Puigdemont, who is wanted for attempting the region’s succession, demanded that charges against his fellow separatists be dropped as a condition for his support.&nbsp;

Sanchez, held his own political rally in Gava, near Catalonia’s regional capital Barcelona, on Sunday denied mentions of amnesty but said that the Socialists wanted to heal social divisions over the Catalan crisis, reported Reuters. “We are trying to turn the page,” he told supporters.&nbsp;

In 2021, Sanchez granted pardons to nine separatists jailed over their roles in the independence push. Currently, hundreds of activists are facing legal action over the 2017 failed Catalan separatist bid which sparked Spain’s worst political crisis in decades.

<h2>What about Feijoo’s bid?</h2>

As of now, Feijoo does not have the support to obtain 176 votes in the 350-seat parliament. During the rally in Madrid, the leader of the PP attacking Sanchez’s supposed plan said that withdrawing criminal cases against the separatists would amount to granting an amnesty to “coup plotters”.&nbsp;

Feijoo is four seats short and has garnered the support of the right-wing Vox plus a handful of other seats. In an interview with El Mundo daily on Monday, Feijoo said “If I accepted” the demands of regional parties, “I could be prime minister next week. But I don’t intend to give in to blackmail.”&nbsp;

The rallies come ahead of the parliamentary debate, on Tuesday (Sept 26) with a speech by Feijoo followed by a first vote on Wednesday. If he fails, he will then face a second vote on Friday where he would require a simple majority of more votes in favour than against.

However, reports suggest that his chances of winning, barring any unexpected surprise switch, are slim since the PP opposes any concessions to separatists. If Feijoo fails, Sanchez will get a chance to see if he can muster support.

For the first time in nearly 50 years, the Spanish government is contemplating a far-reaching amnesty which if greenlit,&nbsp;may pave the way for a new left-leaning administration under Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

<h2>Spain potential political amnesty row: What does it mean?</h2>

Detractors caution that it could stoke political instability with implications for secessionist movement in Catalonia region.

The proposed amnesty is a key requirement put forth by the pro-independence Junts party in exchange for its support of the acting Prime Minister, Socialist Pedro Sanchez, in a parliamentary investiture vote.

Junts, primarily represented by the self-exiled former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont, is advocating for a legislative action that would nullify pending legal proceedings and sanctions against pro-independence leaders connected to the failed 2017 secession attempt.

<h2>Implications for&nbsp;Pedro Sanchez's premiership</h2>

Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the opposition Popular Party (PP) and the top performer in the July election in terms of votes, faces a seemingly futile investiture vote in late September, lacking the parliamentary support to form a government.

Following that, Sanchez&nbsp;will have an opportunity to establish a coalition. However, without Junts' backing, Sanchez's anticipated investiture in November is likely to fail, triggering a repeat of the general election.

<h2>History of political amnesties in Spain</h2>

The last significant amnesty in Spain occurred in 1977 during the transition from dictatorship to democracy, shielding both regime supporters and opponents from prosecution.

The specifics of a potential new amnesty remain unclear, although the Catalan organisation Òmnium Cultural contends it should encompass over 1,400 nationalists who have faced convictions, sanctions, or ongoing legal actions.&nbsp;

Nevertheless, there exists no exact&nbsp;consensus on the constitutional limits related to an amnesty, as the 1978 constitution does not explicitly address the issue.

The call for an amnesty is already encountering intense political opposition, with Sanchez's opponents highlighting his previous rejection of such a move and stating his current consideration is solely for political survival.

PP's Feijóo party has launched a campaign encouraging local governments across Spain to pass resolutions denouncing the proposal, asserting that it "violates our constitutional values."

The PP is also set to launch an anti-amnesty demonstration in Madrid later this month.

Sanchez has faced similar allegations in the past, such as when his government pardoned nine imprisoned independence leaders in 2021 or when it modified the criminal code to benefit Catalan politicians still facing charges of sedition and misuse of public funds.

For the first time in nearly 50 years, the Spanish government is contemplating a far-reaching amnesty which if greenlit, may pave the way for a new left-leaning administration under Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. Spain potential political amnesty row: What does it mean? Detractors caution that it could stoke political instability with implications for secessionist movement in Catalonia region. The proposed amnesty is a key requirement put forth by the pro-independence Junts party in exchange for its support of the acting Prime Minister, Socialist Pedro Sanchez, in a parliamentary investiture vote. Junts, primarily represented by the self-exiled former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont, is advocating for a legislative action that would nullify pending legal proceedings and sanctions against pro-independence leaders connected to the failed 2017 secession attempt. Implications for Pedro Sanchez's premiership Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the opposition Popular Party (PP) and the top performer in the July election in terms of votes, faces a seemingly futile investiture vote in late September, lacking the parliamentary support to form a government. Following that, Sanchez will have an opportunity to establish a coalition. However, without Junts' backing, Sanchez's anticipated investiture in November is likely to fail, triggering a repeat of the general election. History of political amnesties in Spain The last significant amnesty in Spain occurred in 1977 during the transition from dictatorship to democracy, shielding both regime supporters and opponents from prosecution. The specifics of a potential new amnesty remain unclear, although the Catalan organisation Òmnium Cultural contends it should encompass over 1,400 nationalists who have faced convictions, sanctions, or ongoing legal actions. Also read | Spain elections: Spaniards vote in snap polls following campaign centered on women's rights Nevertheless, there exists no exact consensus on the constitutional limits related to an amnesty, as the 1978 constitution does not explicitly address the issue. The call for an amnesty is already encountering intense political opposition, with Sanchez's opponents highlighting his previous rejection of such a move and stating his current consideration is solely for political survival. Also watch | Spain elections: Spaniards vote in snap polls following campaign centered on women`s rights × PP's Feijóo party has launched a campaign encouraging local governments across Spain to pass resolutions denouncing the proposal, asserting that it "violates our constitutional values." The PP is also set to launch an anti-amnesty demonstration in Madrid later this month. Sanchez has faced similar allegations in the past, such as when his government pardoned nine imprisoned independence leaders in 2021 or when it modified the criminal code to benefit Catalan politicians still facing charges of sedition and misuse of public funds. Police in Spain have arrested a man after he groped a woman journalist when she was live on air. The sexual assault has prompted outrage from government ministers. The incident has taken place at a time when a heated debate is going on in Spain&nbsp;over former Spanish football chief Luis Rubiales kissing&nbsp;World Cup winner Jenni Hermoso on the lips without her consent

The anger over Rubiales controversy&nbsp;has snowballed into a "Me Too" like moment in a country which is growing increasingly intolerant of macho attitude and sexual misconduct.

Isa Balado, the woman journalist, was reporting live on a robbery in Madrid for Cuatro, a TV channel. In the middle of her reporting, a man approached her from behind and touched her bottom. He then asked which TV channel she worked for.

Balado explained to the man that she was in the middle of a live coverage before trying to get on with her report. But host Nacho Abad insisted that Balado put the man's face&nbsp;on the camera. The journalist then confronted the man who had groped her.

The incident was far from over. As the man walked away, he tried to touch Balado's head. She ducked out of the way. The man continued to linger in the street before approaching her once more saying he heard her accusing him and that she should "tell the truth".

Spain: Police arrest man who groped female journalist during live reporting

Spain on Sunday (September 10) sent 86 rescuers and eight search dogs to Morocco to help in the rescue effort following the devastating earthquake that has so far resulted in more than 2100 deaths. Spain responded to a formal request from Morocco.

A military plane took off on Sunday morning from a base in Zaragoza, a city in northwestern Spain with 56 rescuers and four search dogs bound for Marrakesh, said the Spanish defence ministry.

Their mission is to "help in the search and rescue of survivors of the devastating earthquake suffered in our neighbouring country".&nbsp;

The rescue teams are from Spain's Military Emergencies Unit (UME). It is a body of the armed forces created to intervene quickly in case of emergencies such as forest fires, floods, and earthquakes.

The teams have tools to drill and cut reinforced concrete. These may come in handy while rescuing people stuck under debris from collapsed buildings. The teams also have means to detect toxic or explosive substances which will ensure that rescue teams work in safety

Another military plane took off from a base in Torrejon de Ardoz near Madrid with 30 rescuers and four search dogs, said the interior ministry.

"We will send whatever is needed because everyone knows that these first hours are key, especially if there are people buried under rubble," Defence Minister Margarita Robles told Spanish public television.&nbsp;

Earlier Sunday, Spain's Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said Spanish aid to Morocco was a sign of solidarity.

"It is a sign of Spanish solidarity and of the sense of friendship that unites the people of Spain with the people of Morocco," he told Catalunya Radio.&nbsp;

He said that he received a phone call from his Moroccan counterpart in the early hours of Sunday requesting aid.

Other countries like the United States and France have offered humanitarian aid.

Kyiv, on Sunday (September 10) blamed Russia for the death of two aid workers, one Canadian and the other Spanish, in eastern Ukraine. It was previously reported that Russian shelling hit a van which was carrying a team of four people working with a Ukrainian non-governmental organisation near the war-battered city of Bakhmut.&nbsp;

Kyiv accused Moscow’s troops of killing Emma Igual, a Spanish citizen, and Anthony Ihnat, a Canadian citizen, both working for the NGO Road to Relief. They said two German citizens working for the aid group had also been injured after the Russian shelling in the eastern Donetsk region.

The organisation on its Instagram page said that the volunteers were helping evacuate the wounded from the front-line areas and were trapped inside the van as it flipped over and caught fire after being struck by shells near the two of Chasiv Yar.&nbsp;

The other two volunteers were identified as German medical volunteer Ruben Mawick and Swedish volunteer Johan Mathias Thyr, who were seriously wounded, according to the organisation.&nbsp;

After the World Cup kiss scandal, hundreds of Spanish women have shared their stories of sexual abuse. Football chief Luis Rubiales' unwanted kiss to Jenni Hermoso has triggered a #metoo movement in Spain. Priyanka Sharma and Molly Gambhir tell you more

Gravitas: Spain's Own Metoo Movement | The World Cup Kiss Controversy Continues

In a sign that the Luis Rubiales&nbsp;kiss controversy may be developing into a sort of a 'Me Too' moment for Spain, more than 200 Spanish women have anonymously shared examples of sexism or abuse of power at their workplace. A nation-wide debate has started in Spain after country's football federation chief Luis Rubiales planted an unsolicited kiss on the lips of Jenni Hermoso, member of Spain's women football team after the country won women's football world cup last month.

Rubiales initially brushed off the incident but it soon assumed international proportions with FIFA getting involved.

The anonymous responses with examples of sexism and power abuse were sent after a social media appeal by Helena Legido-Quigley, a professor at Imperial College London who was working with members of Women in Global Health Spain.

Just within five days of the appeal, more than 200 stories have&nbsp;poured in.

“I was completely shocked,” she said as quoted by The Guardian.

“What happened to Jenni has really created a moment for women to start sharing their stories.”

The women had detailed their experiences that involved lewd comments to inappropriate touching and even sexual assaults. What's scary is that most of them said that they were sharing just two or three of many such experiences, according to Legido-Quigley.

The news report by The Guardian said that most of these women never reported these incidents. The reasons ranged from fear to being clueless as to what exactly is to be done in such a situation.&nbsp;

“In several cases they said it destroyed their careers,” said Legido-Quigley.

“Some said that they were sharing this for the first time. They hadn’t even told their partners.”

For many of these women though the unpleasant incidents took place within seconds, the psychological ramifications lasted for a long time.

“I think what this says about Spanish society is that what we call micromachismos are normalised,” she said as quoted by The Guardian&nbsp;

“So these comments about women, about the way they look, there is this kind of humour, it’s normalised behaviour. Women feel uncomfortable but they don’t dare to highlight it because of power [imbalances].”

“I think this is a #MeToo moment for Spain, but we are not ready to give names and shame institutions. That’s the key difference. Because people are really scared of losing their jobs,” she added.

The initial aftermath of the Rubiales controversy shocked many. The federation chief initially brushed of the incident saying it was just “a little peck”.

Just months ago, 15 players on Spain's national women's team refused to play under coach Jorge Vilda. All of the players sent identical letters saying the situation was affecting their health and emotional state.

The Rubiales-led federation had shot back at the players and asked them to “admit their error and apologise”.

In a sign that the Luis Rubiales kiss controversy may be developing into a sort of a 'Me Too' moment for Spain, more than 200 Spanish women have anonymously shared examples of sexism or abuse of power at their workplace. Just within five days of the appeal, more than 200 stories have poured in. “I was completely shocked,” she said as quoted by The Guardian. “What happened to Jenni has really created a moment for women to start sharing their stories.” The women had detailed their experiences that involved lewd comments to inappropriate touching and even sexual assaults. What's scary is that most of them said that they were sharing just two or three of many such experiences, according to Legido-Quigley. The news report by The Guardian said that most of these women never reported these incidents. The reasons ranged from fear to being clueless as to what exactly is to be done in such a situation. “In several cases they said it destroyed their careers,” said Legido-Quigley. “Some said that they were sharing this for the first time. They hadn’t even told their partners.” For many of these women though the unpleasant incidents took place within seconds, the psychological ramifications lasted for a long time. “I think what this says about Spanish society is that what we call micromachismos are normalised,” she said as quoted by The Guardian “So these comments about women, about the way they look, there is this kind of humour, it’s normalised behaviour. Women feel uncomfortable but they don’t dare to highlight it because of power [imbalances].” “I think this is a #MeToo moment for Spain, but we are not ready to give names and shame institutions. That’s the key difference. Because people are really scared of losing their jobs,” she added. The initial aftermath of the Rubiales controversy shocked many. The federation chief initially brushed of the incident saying it was just “a little peck”. More than 200 Spanish women share incidents of sexism after Rubiales-Hermoso kiss row

Former Spain's women's team coach Jorge Vilda said on Wednesday that he didn't expect to be fired by the country's football federation (RFEF), adding it was "unfair" and "undeserved" weeks after winning the Women's World Cup. The RFEF announced the decision to sack Vilda on Tuesday, after the new board formed following the suspension of RFEF President Luis Rubiales by soccer's world governing body FIFA over the allegedly non-consensual kiss with Jenni Hermoso during the World Cup victory celebration two weeks ago.

The RFEF later announced it had appointed Montse Tome to succeed Vilda. "I am as well as I can be for someone who has been world champions 16 days ago, renewed his contract for five more years with a higher salary 10 days ago and then today to be unfairly dismissed," Vilda said in an interview with Spanish radio Cadena Ser.

Considered to be a close ally, Vilda applauded Rubiales when he refused to resign on Aug. 25 but later issued statements condemning his behaviour. The suspended RFEF president praised Vilda for the World Cup triumph in his speech and offered him a new four-year contract, increasing his annual salary to 500,000 euros ($536,000) from 160,000 euros.

"It was a brief meeting with (interim president) Pedro Rocha and the vice-president for equality. Their explanation was that of 'structural changes'," Vilda said about how he learned he was being sacked. "My conscience is clear because I have given 100% every day. I said I didn't understand and that I didn't think my dismissal was deserved. "I will never applaud anything related to machismo. The president was praising my work and announced my renewal, that's what I applauded. The rest... when 150 people around you are applauding, it is very difficult to be the only one who does not..."

In a statement that gave no reason for his dismissal and did not mention Hermoso, Rubiales or the scandal, the RFEF thanked 42-year-old Vilda for his "extraordinary sporting legacy". "The coach has been key to the remarkable growth of women's football and leaves Spain as world champions and second in the FIFA rankings," the RFEF statement said.

Vilda had been under fire since last year after 15 players staged a mutiny calling for his resignation because of inadequate coaching methods and calling for conditions to match those of the men's squad. Most of the players involved were cut from the squad even as some demands were met.

Danae Boronat, a sports presenter who interviewed Spain's leading female players for her book "Don't Call Them Girls, Call Them Footballers", said players accused Vilda of micromanaging, such as instructing senior players what to say in interviews. The furore involving Rubiales has quickly spiralled into a national debate over women's rights and sexist behaviour and the mutiny scandal was back to the headlines, with 58 top-female players announcing last week that they were quiting the national team until changes were made in the RFEF leadership.

Football: Women's team coach Jorge Vilda says Spain sacking 'unfair' and 'undeserved'

At least three people have died and three others were missing after heavy rains lashed Spain and triggered flash floods, said officials on Monday (September 4). The floods have prompted the closure of roads, subway lines, and high-speed train connections.&nbsp;

<h2>Spain floods after sudden downpour</h2>

Spain witnessed a sudden downpour due to a storm over the weekend that has affected almost the entire country, with the heaviest rains recorded on Sunday (Sep 3) in the coastal provinces of Cadiz, Tarragona and Castello, said the country’s weather service AEMET.&nbsp;

At least three people died around the central city of Toledo, some 50 kilometres southwest of Madrid, which according to AEMET, received a record rainfall of 90 litres per square metre on Sunday.&nbsp;

Emergency services deployed helicopters to rescue people who had sought refuge on the roofs of their homes in Toledo. The police said one of the victims, a young man, was trapped in a lift that filled up with water, while another was inside a vehicle when it got flooded, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

Additionally, the body of a 50-year-old man, who was reported to be missing, was found floating in a river near his home in the town of Camarena, also in the province of Toledo.&nbsp;

<h2>About those missing</h2>

Emergency services in the Madrid region said that they dealt with at least 1,200 incidents overnight, adding that the firefighters and police were searching for one man in the rural area of Aldea del Fresno.&nbsp;

The man went missing with his 10-year-old son when their car was dragged into the Alberche River after a sudden rise in water level, Madrid’s emergency services, Javier Chivite, told public television RTVE.

“The minor was rescued after he had climbed up a tree,” said the Madrid emergency service. They had also rescued the boy’s mother and sister earlier in the day. “The poor boy spent the night perched in a tree,” said the head of the regional government of Madrid, Isabel Diaz Ayuso.&nbsp;

Reports citing officials also said that the police are looking for an 83-year-old man who was swept away by floodwaters in the neighbouring town of Villamanta and a woman who went missing in the town of Valmojado in Toledo.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Weatherman’s woe’</h2>

As per Reuters, rains continued on early Monday which transformed streets into rivers of mud that swept away cars and trash bins in Madrid, Castile-La Mancha, Catalonia, and Valencia regions.&nbsp;

In an update on Monday, AEMET said the cut-off low phenomenon – also known as weatherman’s woe – which caused the downpour is starting to move away from the country.&nbsp;

Residents of the Madrid region received an emergency text in Spanish and English accompanied by a loud alarm, on Sunday, asking them not to use their vehicles and stay at home due to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/red-alert-in-spain-as-torrential-rain-causes-flash-floods-632068">“extreme risk of storms”</a>. Spain: At least three dead, three missing after torrential rain triggers flash floods

Spain shut down rail services, cancelled a Spanish league football game and advised thousands of residents to remain indoors as incessant rains caused flash floods in and around Madrid city.

The national weather agency on Sunday issued red alerts, indicating a possible extreme danger in the Madrid region, Toledo province, and Cadiz city.

It said up to 120 litres per square metre of rain could fall over 12 hours in Madrid.

"Due to the exceptional and abnormal situation, in which rainfall records will be broken, I ask the people of Madrid to stay at home today," Madrid Mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida wrote on X.

Almeida said that Sunday would most likely see the capital city’s rainfall record break&nbsp;with 120 litres per square metre. In 1972, Madrid witnessed 87 litres per square metre of rainfall, which was the highest recorded at that time.

Madrid's emergency services sent texts to residents warning them of flood risks and advising them not to use vehicles.

<h2>Football match suspended&nbsp;</h2>

Even Sunday's LaLiga match between Atletico Madrid and Sevilla was suspended due to the torrential rain.

The coastal regions of cities Cádiz, Tarragona and Castelló have been especially affected by the floods triggered by Storm Dana-induced rains.

In the eastern Castelló province, flooding led to firefighters rescuing a man trapped in his car, which was surrounded by waist-high flood water.

People have also been advised to avoid unnecessary trips in the north-eastern city of Alcanar, Tarragona —where 215 litres per square meter of rain has fallen in the past 24 hours, reports BBC.

El Pais newspaper reported that some train services have been called off across Spain and drivers have been told to avoid certain flooded roads in heavily flooded areas.

Sunday’s forecast of heavy rain comes after Spain endured an intense heat wave and persistent high temperatures in August, which was also the case with much of southern Europe.

On Saturday, local media reported that police were investigating whether two people who died while practising canyoning in northern Spain had drowned.

Red alert in Spain as torrential rain causes flash floods

Madrid's mayor on Sunday advised all residents to stay at home as the capital braced itself for torrential rain and storms affecting parts of Spain.

Madrid residents told to stay at home as torrential rain sweeps across Spain

Barcelona's 16-year-old forward Lamine Yamal received a first senior call-up for Spain, as manager Luis de la Fuente named his squad on Friday for next week's Euro 2024 Group A matches against Georgia and Cyprus. Yamal has established himself as an important part of Barca's forward line in the early stages of the season, and was named man of the match in last weekend's 4-3 come-from-behind win at Villarreal in LaLiga.

Yamal, who has a Moroccan father, was born and raised in Spain. He is a Spain youth international and his call-up for the senior side will end the hopes of Moroccan fans that he could be persuaded to switch allegiance.

"We met him in Barcelona. He was a stalwart of Spain's youth teams and is a footballer with exceptional power. He looks like he has been touched by the wand of God. He is different," De la Fuente told a press conference on Friday. "We look at the level of the player, not the age. He is ready to compete at the highest level. He is a very important asset for the future."

Real Madrid's new-recruits, goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and forward Joselu, were included, but there was no recall for goalkeeper David de Gea, who is still a free-agent after leaving Manchester United earlier this summer.

Football: Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal gets maiden senior Spain call-up

Heavy rains and strong winds sweep across parts of the Balearic islands, including Mallorca, and Catalonia in northeastern Spain.

Deadly storm ravages Mallorca

Spanish authorities busted one of the biggest drug hauls in the country’s history after they seized 9.5 tonnes of cocaine that was hidden in a banana freight container originating from Ecuador.

The seizure took place on Wednesday in the southern port of Algeciras. The customs said in a statement said that it was "the biggest concealed cargo of cocaine in Spain to date."

The narcotic was stashed in banana crates inside a refrigerated container, they added.

Many of these packages had hakenkreuz symbols and the word "Hitler" written on them, similar to a consignment of cocaine that was intercepted in Peru en route to Belgium in May this year, the authorities said.

They did not reveal which group was responsible, but the officials added that the operation was "an unprecedented blow for one of the biggest criminal organisations at the world level in cocaine distribution."

<h2>Drug consignment intended for major criminal networks&nbsp;</h2>

This drug consignment was intended to be supplied to major criminal networks in Europe, the customs officials said.

The logos of more than 30 European criminal groups who had been destined to take delivery of the cargo were found inside.

The customs said that the drugs came from Guayaquil, the Ecuadoran port city known as a springboard for South American drugs. It is from here that the drugs are supplied to the United States and Europe.

The organisation which undertook the transport was able to send 40 containers a month to Europe thanks to a vast commercial network and also used the northwestern port of Vigo, the investigators said.

<h2>Probe began in July&nbsp;</h2>

Prior to this seizure, Spain's biggest cocaine bust was 8.4 tonnes in 2018, also found in a supposed banana container in Algeciras.

The investigations began in July when police received information about a pending shipment of Colombian cocaine via Ecuador in August.

The organisation behind the shipment operated through a banana exporting company in Machala, Ecuador, the agency said.

The cargo was due to be delivered in Portugal for later distribution throughout Europe.

No arrests have been made so far.

Scorching heat and dry weather have contributed to unusually severe wildfires in Europe this summer. Now, the wildfire that broke out in Spain's Tenerife island last week has forced tens of thousands of people to flee their homes. This, as the fire raging the north of the island, remained out of control.

More than 26,000 people were evacuated from their homes on the Spanish island of Tenerife, as of Saturday (August 19) as the wildfire continued to rage out of control, said the emergency services. The local officials said that the Spanish holiday island has never witnessed a fire at this scale.&nbsp;

As of Saturday afternoon, more than 26,000 people may have been evacuated, said the Canary Islands emergency services&nbsp;on X (formerly Twitter) citing provisional estimates. It also marks a sharp rise in evacuations after officials in an update on Friday said some 4,500 people had been evacuated since the fire began on Tuesday night.&nbsp;

As many as 11 towns have been affected by wildfire, said local officials, reported&nbsp;Reuters. Earlier on Saturday, Montse Roman, technical director of the emergency, said that the figures are still being collated after he said that there was no immediate update on the number of people evacuated.&nbsp;

The emergency services official also warned about possible “further evacuations may take place if the fire spreads.” Additional evacuations were ordered on Saturday morning due to worsening weather overnight, said regional leader Fernando Clavijo, in a press conference.&nbsp;

Some people evacuated from La Victoria, in the north-west of the island, are also receiving medical help. “The night before we arrived, we had a pretty bad time. Everything was burning... the roofs were full (of ash),” resident Paulina Fernandez told Reuters.

According to media reports, fierce flames were seen overnight on Friday while helicopters were seen dropping water, the next day, on areas close to homes while smoke continued to billow in the air.&nbsp;

Clavijo said that a rise in temperatures and stronger winds overnight on Friday worsened the situation. He also spoke about how thick smoke was hampering efforts to extinguish the fire from air.

Tenerife Council President Rosa Davila told reporters that the fire was at a scale that has never been seen before in the Canary Islands. The priority was to “protect people’s lives,” said Davila, adding that none of the houses had been destroyed due to the blaze, citing the fire brigade.&nbsp;

So far, some 5,000 hectares have been engulfed by the wildfire with a perimeter of 50 kilometres. Pedro Martinez, one of the officials in charge of putting out the blaze said that the fire’s perimeter had “most certainly grown a lot” overnight and was “descending steadily” down the mountainside in the northern Santa Ursula area, according to AFP.&nbsp;
