Thousands protested in Spanish capital Madrid and some even clashed with police on Thursday (November 9) just as a deal with the Catalan separatists junts neared. The issue has divided opinion in the country. Amnesty deal with Catalan separatists makes thousands protest in Madrid

Spain's Socialists have reached a deal with the Catalan separatist Junts party for government support, a source close to the negotiations told Reuters on Thursday, a pact which could draw strong criticism if it involves amnesties for separatist activists.

The Socialist Party (PSOE) did not immediately respond to request for comment, while a spokesman for Junts declined to comment. Asked about a deal, Acting Economy Minister Nadia Calviño said on Thursday: "I hope we have a government as soon as possible."

Spain's acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and his Socialist Party are trying to form a government after a July&nbsp;election&nbsp;produced no outright winner.

He reached a&nbsp;deal&nbsp;to govern in coalition with the hard left Sumar platform last month but also needs several other smaller parties - who have supported him in the past - to back him in an investiture vote that could take place as soon as next week.

Junts has said during negotiations that it would give its seven votes in parliament in exchange for an amnesty law that could exculpate as many as&nbsp;1,400 activists&nbsp;and politicians involved in a failed attempt to separate Catalonia from the rest of Spain that reached a head in 2017.

The potential&nbsp;amnesty&nbsp;has met fierce condemnation from Sanchez's conservative opponents who have organised large&nbsp;protests&nbsp;and accused him of putting the rule of law in Spain on the line for his own political gain.

Reacting to the news of a deal on Thursday, the main opposition centre-right People's Party spokesman Cuca Gamarra said Spain was looking at "a shameful and humiliating deal," while the popular - and populist - PP Madrid leader Isabel Ayuso told Antena 3 TV station: "I am worried that we are becoming a dictatorship."

<h2 data-testid="Heading">'Serious concerns' about amnesty plan&nbsp;</h2>

On Wednesday, the European Commission's Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders wrote to the Spanish government asking for more details about the amnesty agreement being negotiated.

"Serious concerns are now being voiced as regards ongoing discussions on the possible adoption of an amnesty law," he wrote in a letter to Spanish Presidency Minister Felipe Bolanos.

"While for the time being there is no formal proposal, this has become a matter of considerable importance in the public debate and the Commission has been contacted on this matter, including by a large number of citizens."

Bolanos responded on Wednesday, saying: "Should an amnesty bill be registered [in parliament], be assured that we will explain to you all the details of such a law, as well as the position of our government."

The potential amnesty has also drawn&nbsp;fire&nbsp;from Spanish judges who warned this week it could undermine the rule of law - a shot across the bows for a law that Catalan separatist parties fear could be watered down by judges in its implementation in individual cases, regardless of what the socialists and Junts agree.

Pablo Simon, a political expert at the Carlos III University in Madrid, said that fear was legitimate.

"Unlike the pardons which the governments gave out to (individual) Catalan separatists, the amnesty law will take much longer to be processed, going through parliament, with each case reviewed by judges," he told TVE television on Thursday.

Spanish Socialists reach deal with Catalan separatist party for government support: Report

CNMV, Spain's stock market supervisor, on Wednesday announced the initiation of its first case addressing potential breaches of regulations governing mass advertising campaigns for cryptoassets.

A Reuters report said that the regulatory steps, implemented at the beginning of 2022, are aimed at bringing order to the burgeoning landscape of crypto advertising, entrusting the CNMV with the authorisation of mass campaigns and the responsibility to ensure investors are well-informed about associated risks.&nbsp;

The CNMV said that disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against Spanish technology provider Miolos S.L. for its involvement in two mass advertising campaigns promoting cryptoassets. &nbsp;

Emphasising that this action did not predetermine the final outcome of the investigation, the regulatory body highlighted its commitment to upholding the integrity of the market. Miolos is yet to respond to the CNMV's actions, leaving the industry and investors awaiting further clarification on the matter.&nbsp;

"This is the first sanctioning proceeding to be opened for non-compliance with the circular regulating the advertising of cryptoassets," Reuters quoted Rodrigo Buenaventura, the head of CNMV, as saying during a financial event on Wednesday. &nbsp;

Buenaventura underscored the significance of adherence to the new regulations and stressed that this case should serve as a reminder for industry participants to respect the established rules.&nbsp;

As crypto and digital assets linked to traditional currencies continue their rapid growth, global regulators are increasingly concerned about the potential risks they pose to the financial system. &nbsp;

The CNMV is currently investigating four potential serious infringements, focusing on advertisers' failure to include essential information and warnings about the risks associated with the promoted cryptoassets. Additionally, the investigation centres on the lack of prior notification submitted by the entities involved.&nbsp;

The new regulations&nbsp;mandate that advertisers and companies promoting cryptoassets inform the CNMV at least 10 days in advance about campaigns targeting over 100,000 individuals. &nbsp;

This proactive approach enables the regulatory body to scrutinise the content of campaigns, ensuring compliance and including necessary warnings about risks. The rules extend to cryptoasset service providers advertising their activities, as well as any individual promoting cryptoassets on their behalf or on behalf of third parties.&nbsp;

Storm Ciaran: At least seven people killed across Europe amid torrential rains and record winds

Lionel Messi won the eighth Ballon d'Or of his remarkable career at a glittering ceremony in Paris on Monday, while Spain's World Cup-winning star Aitana Bonmati took the women's prize.

For Messi, the trophy rewards, above all else, his inspirational performances at last year's World Cup in Qatar, when he dragged Argentina to victory, scoring seven goals and being named the tournament's best player.

It was the crowning moment of his astonishing career, and it allowed him to see off stiff competition, in particular from Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe, to take the award on the stage of the Chatelet Theatre in Paris.

It was a return to the French capital after his departure from Paris Saint-Germain in June and his subsequent move to Inter Miami in Major League Soccer.

"This is a gift to the whole Argentina team for what we achieved," said Messi on stage after receiving his award from David Beckham, the co-owner of Inter Miami.

Messi dedicated the trophy to late Argentina legend Diego Maradona, who would have celebrated his 63rd birthday on Monday.

"Happy birthday Diego. This is for you too," he said.

Messi benefits from a recent change which means the award is based on a player's record over the last season, rather than over the calendar year.

He won despite an underwhelming final season at PSG, even if he was a Ligue 1 title winner.

<h2>- Mbappe, Haaland just miss out -</h2>

Mbappe was the star player in that team, scoring 41 goals, and was also the World Cup's top scorer with eight goals, including a hat-trick in the final which France lost to Argentina on penalties.

Yet he fell just short for the Ballon d'Or, finishing third, while Norway striker Haaland came second after scoring 52 goals in 53 games for the Manchester City team that won the treble of English Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.

Messi is 36 and won his first Ballon d'Or in 2009. With eight, he is now three ahead of his old rival Cristiano Ronaldo, the next most decorated player in the history of the award.

It remains to be seen if Messi will again feature in the running for the prize, which is voted for by one journalist in each of the top 100 nations in the FIFA ranking.

"I am not thinking about the long-term future. I am just enjoying the day to day at the moment," he said.

Messi will struggle to hold off the next wave of superstars, led by Mbappe, Haaland and Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham, but his World Cup performances made his victory this time feel inevitable.

The women's prize seemed even more clear cut, as Bonmati was rewarded for starring as Spain won the World Cup in Australia in August.

The 25-year-old midfielder was named the best player at the World Cup as the Spanish team overcame off-field turbulence, including protests against their national federation and coach Jorge Vilda, to lift the trophy.

<h2>- 'Unique year' -</h2>

Bonmati also starred as Barcelona won the Champions League last season and was recently named as the UEFA Women's Player of the Year.

"It is difficult to improve on this. It has been a unique year," she told various media including AFP.

"If anyone said to me when I was little that I would play at the Camp Nou, win the World Cup, two Champions Leagues, a Ballon d'Or, a UEFA award, these are extraordinary things."

She was one of four members of the triumphant Spain team to feature among the 30 nominees, with Alba Redondo, Salma Paralluelo and full-back Olga Carmona, who netted the winner in the final, all shortlisted.

Last year's Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas, also part of that Spain side, was not nominated after missing almost all of last season with a knee injury.

Australia's Sam Kerr came second with Paralluelo in third place.

Putellas had won the Ballon d'Or in each of the previous two campaigns. Norway's Ada Hegerberg won the inaugural award in 2018 and USA star Megan Rapinoe succeeded her a year later.

Bellingham won the Kopa Trophy for the best player of last season aged under 21.

The 20-year-old has started his Madrid career with 13 goals in 13 games, although the prize rewards his performances in his final campaign with Borussia Dortmund.

Bellingham's Madrid teammate, the Brazil forward Vinicius Junior, won the Socrates prize in recognition of his off-pitch work.

Messi's Argentina colleague Emiliano Martinez won the Yashin Trophy for the best goalkeeper of the season.

"It is difficult to improve on this. It has been a unique year," she told various media including AFP. "If anyone said to me when I was little that I would play at the Camp Nou, win the World Cup, two Champions Leagues, a Ballon d'Or, a UEFA award, these are extraordinary things." She was one of four members of the triumphant Spain team to feature among the 30 nominees, with Alba Redondo, Salma Paralluelo and full-back Olga Carmona, who netted the winner in the final, all shortlisted. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. The private Museum of Forbidden Art was thrown open to the public in Barcelona on Thursday (October 26) in Barcelona. This new museum has been devoted to artworks that were previously censored. It has 42 works by artists around the world that have been denounced, attacked or removed from exhibition. The artists include Francisco de Goya (Spain), Andy Warhol (US), Ai Weiwei (China) and more. The artworks are part of collection owned by Tatxo Benet, a Spanish businessman.

These artworks have indeed caused controversies, but Benet makes an important distinction.

"We don't collect or show scandalous or controversial works in the museum. We show works in the museum that have been censored, assaulted, violated, banned," he told AFP.&nbsp;

"Works that have a history behind them, without that history they wouldn't be here," he added.&nbsp;

There are several artworks that deal with religion. For example, artist Jani Leinonen's 'McJesus' shows Ronald McDonald on a crucifix. The artwork was withdrawn from a museum in Israel.

Another notable artwork is by French-Algerian artist Zoulikha Bouabdellah which shows 30 Muslim prayer mats. Each of these mats was adorned with a pair of sequinned stilettos. The artwork was pulled from an exhibition in France in 2015 after a Muslim group complained about it.

Benet is one of the founders of Spanish Multimedia group Mediapro. He started his collection in 2018 when he bought an installation called "Political prisoners in Contemporary Spain".

The installation had black-and-white photos with pixellated images of people's faces, people who had broken the law. Catalan separatist leaders are among the photos. These leaders had faced legal action over a failed 2017 secession bid. The work is by Spanish artist Santiago Sierra. It was pulled from Madrid art fair just two hours after Benet bought it.&nbsp;

The Museum of Forbidden Art has also on display,&nbsp;paintings and sketches made by former inmates at the US naval base at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. These include a work showing Statue of Liberty submerged in water with only the hand holding the torch and the crown visible.

After exhibition of artworks made by Guantanamo Bay prisoners caused a controversy in 2017, the US government ordered that artworks made by inmates at the prison would have to be destroyed when they are released.

"Any artist who can't show their work because someone prevents them from doing so is an artist who is censored, and therefore will always have a place in this museum," Benet said.&nbsp;

Spain: Museum of censored art exhibits works that were forbidden to be displayed

More than 200,000 minors have been sexually abused by the Roman Catholic clergy in Spain since 1940, as per the findings published by an independent commission on Friday (Oct 27).

No specific figure was mentioned by the report, but it said that in a poll of around 8,000 people it was discovered that 0.6 per cent of around 39 million people living in Spain said that they had been sexually abused by&nbsp;members of the clergy when they were young.&nbsp;

After abuse by lay members was included, the percentage increased to 1.13 per cent, making it nearly more than 400,000 people,&nbsp;said Spain's national ombudsman Angel Gabilondo at a press conference for presenting the report's findings.&nbsp;

The revelations made in Spain are the latest to rock the Roman Catholic Church after many sexual abuse scandals were exposed around the world, which generally involve children, in the past 20 years.

In Spain, a traditionally Catholic country that has become highly secular, clerical abuse allegations have started gaining traction now as the survivors continue making accusations.

"Unfortunately, for many years there has been a certain desire to deny abuses or a desire to conceal or protect the abusers," stated Gabilondo, a former education minister.

The report has criticised the Catholic Church's attitude and asked it to respond to the cases of child abuse which involved the "insufficient" clergy. &nbsp;

The report appealed for the creation of a state fund for paying reparations to the victims.

<h2>Findings to be discussed in extraordinary meeting</h2>

Before the presentation of the report in the parliament, the Spanish bishops conference stated that an extraordinary meeting would be held to discuss its findings on Monday (Oct 30).&nbsp;

In March 2022, Spain's parliament gave approval for the establishment of an independent commission led by the ombudsman of the country to "shed light" on allegations of sexual abuse of "defenceless boys and girls" which took place inside the Catholic Church.&nbsp;

The Catholic Church of Spain, which clearly refused to carry out its own investigation, did not agree to participate in the independent investigation, although they co-operated by sharing documents on cases of sexual abuse which had been collected by dioceses.

With the increasing political pressure, a private law firm in February 2022 was tasked with an "audit" into past and present sexual abuse cases by teachers, clergy, and others who were associated with the Church and it was said that the audit should be completed by the end of the year.

Over 200,000 children sexually abused by Catholic clergy in Spain, states probe

Andre Onana's last-gasp penalty save secured a vital Champions League win for Manchester United against FC Copenhagen on Tuesday, while Jude Bellingham scored again for Real Madrid in their victory over Braga.

Elsewhere, Arsenal beat Sevilla in the rain in Spain and Harry Kane was on target as Bayern Munich won a tough assignment against Galatasaray.

Before kick-off at Old Trafford, United held a minute's silence in memory of Bobby Charlton after the Red Devils legend died on Saturday at the age of 86.

They marked the occasion by claiming their first points in Group A as Harry Maguire's 72nd-minute header secured a 1-0 win.

The result keeps alive their chances of advancing to the last 16 but they needed Onana to produce a brilliant save from Jordan Larsson's 97th-minute penalty to see the game out.

The spot-kick was awarded when Scott McTominay caught Mohamed Elyounoussi as he tried to hook a ball clear in the box, but Larsson -- whose father Henrik briefly played for United in 2007 -- could not convert the chance.

"It is incredible and a great night. Especially in the dying second when you concede a penalty, but a brilliant save from Andre Onana," coach Erik ten Hag told broadcaster TNT Sports.

<h2>- Kane nets in Bayern win -</h2>

United are now back in contention to qualify but Bayern look set to run away with the group after making it three wins out of three with a 3-1 victory in Istanbul.

Kingsley Coman's early opener for the German champions was cancelled out by a Mauro Icardi penalty on the half-hour mark.

But Bayern pulled away in the second half, with Kane finishing in the 73rd minute to restore the visitors' lead with his 11th goal in 12 games for his new club.

He then set up Jamal Musiala to wrap up the win.

Bayern have now won 16 consecutive matches in the Champions League group phase and have not lost at this stage in over six years.

"I don't know how many group stage matches I've done as a coach, but it's always super difficult -- so it's great to find ourselves with nine points after three matches," said Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel.

<h2>- 200 up for Ancelotti -</h2>

Madrid, the record 14-time European champions, also have three wins out of three in Group C after Rodrygo and Bellingham scored in a 2-1 victory over Braga in Portugal.

Real coach Carlo Ancelotti was taking charge of his 200th game in the competition and he saw Rodrygo open the scoring on 16 minutes before Bellingham fired in just past the hour mark.

It was the England midfielder's third goal in as many Champions League games for his new club, and his 11th in 12 matches altogether since signing from Borussia Dortmund.

Alvaro Djalo pulled one back for Braga, but Real can secure qualification for the last 16 when they host the Portuguese side next.

Napoli are second in the group after a 1-0 win at Union Berlin, who are still without a point.

Giacomo Raspadori scored the only goal in the second half as the Italian champions won without star striker Victor Osimhen.

<h2>- Arsenal win in Seville -</h2>

In Group B, Arsenal bounced back from losing 2-1 to Lens in France in their last game as they beat Sevilla by the same scoreline on a sodden surface at the Sanchez Pizjuan.

Gabriel Martinelli ran clear to open the scoring in first-half stoppage time and a fantastic strike by Gabriel Jesus made it two.

Nemanja Gudelj pulled one back for Sevilla but last season's Europa League winners have won just twice in 13 games in this campaign.

"There are not many teams to have won here in the last ten years in Europe and we've done it," Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta told TNT Sports.

Lens are second, a point behind Arsenal, after coming from behind to draw 1-1 at home to PSV Eindhoven with Elye Wahi cancelling out Johan Bakayoko's opener.

Last season's beaten finalists Inter Milan are joint top of Group D with seven points after defeating Red Bull Salzburg 2-1 at San Siro.

Hakan Calhanoglu’s second-half penalty won it for Inter after Alexis Sanchez's opener was cancelled out by young Israeli Oscar Gloukh.

Real Sociedad are level with Inter thanks to a 1-0 win over Benfica in Lisbon secured by a Brais Mendez goal.

Benfica are still without a point and staring at an early exit.

In September, the police in Spain arrested a 50-year-old Lithuanian man who repeatedly faked heart attacks to get out of paying the bill for fancy dinners. They caught him in Alicante as he attempted to leave the restaurant without settling the bill and pretending to be unwell, the local police confirmed. He had previously performed the stunt 20 times within a year, an Alicante National Police spokesperson told Insider. The local police force was well aware of his trick. After the dinner, he received a bill for $36.75, reported Spain's EFE news agency. Moisés Doménech, the restaurant's manager, told EFE that a colleague noticed him attempting to dine and dash. The Lithuanian man informed the restaurant staff that he had forgotten his wallet and needed to retrieve it from his hotel room. However, the restaurant staff refused to let him leave without paying. Then, the man dramatically threw himself to the ground and pretended to have a heart attack. However, the restaurant did not fall for his act and called the police. The officers immediately recognised the man. The Alicante National Police spokesperson confirmed that he was a repeat offender. She said, "He was arrested multiple times in Alicante. The modus operandi was the same." Furthermore, the judiciary did not disclose much information about the case due to security concerns. An officer who arrested the man on four different occasions said he ordered expensive food items like lobsters, entrecote, and premium whiskeys. The officer added that the man usually greeted officers with a smile while being apprehended and appeared unfazed about spending a night or two behind bars. At least 8,561 migrants have reached the Canary Islands over the past two weeks, representing more than a third of this year's total arrivals, data from Spain's interior ministry showed on Monday.

Between Jan. 1 and Oct. 15 of this year, the islands in the Atlantic received 23,537 migrants, an 80% increase from the same period last year, the data showed.

The archipelago's seven islands have become the main destination for migrants from Senegal and other African countries trying to reach Spain. Others seek to cross the Mediterranean to the Spanish mainland.

Milder weather and calmer seas in September, October and sometimes November usually trigger an increase in migrant arrivals.

According the European Union's border agency Frontex, political instability in Senegal was also acting as a "push factor" driving people to leave the country via the West Africa route.

Over 8,500 migrants reach Spain's Canary Islands in two weeks

A court in Barcelona said on Wednesday (Oct 11) that it had rejected a Spanish man's claim that he was tortured by police during the dictatorship of General Franco. Spanish prosecutors had thrown their weight behind the case and had asked the court to investigate the claim filed by Carles Vallejo, a trade unionist who claimed to have suffered abuses during Francisco Franco's 1939-1975 regime.

Vallejo had made the claims in November 2022. He had alleged that he had been tortured at a Barcelona police station in early 70s for information about his activities.

However, Catalonia's top court decided not to admit the case.

The court said that the events "fell outside the statute of limitations and were covered by the amnesty", in a reference to a law passed in 1977 as Spain moved from dictatorship to democracy.

"We will appeal," said Catalonia's top justice official Gemma Ubasart in a message on social media.&nbsp;

The decision was denounced by Human rights organisation Iridia which said that it was perpetuating a culture of silence about crimes committed by Franco's regime.&nbsp;

"The refusal to investigate Francoism's crimes is a violation of the right to truth, justice and reparation, and it represents the ongoing perpetuation of a model of impunity which is based on silence and indifference and is still very present within Spain," it said in a statement.

Vlalejo's lawsuit was filed a month after passage of a democratic memory law by Spain's left-wing government to tackle legacy of the 1936-39 Civil War and the dictatorship after that.

Before the passage of the law, Spanish courts had routinely rejected lawsuits filed by victims saying they fell under the 1977 amnesty law or that the time limit for filing criminal charges had passed.&nbsp;

But the public prosecutors in Vallejo's claim said that new legal framework was created by the new law and judge were now required &nbsp;"to investigate alleged violations of human rights" that occurred "during the civil war and the dictatorship".

The prosecutors demanded a probe "into the facts" alleged by Vallejo and "their context". Amnesty International hailed the move as the first time prosecutors had called for probe into torture and crimes against humanity during Franco years.

A court in Barcelona said on Wednesday (Oct 11) that it had rejected a Spanish man's claim that he was tortured by police during the dictatorship of General Franco.

"We will appeal," said Catalonia's top justice official Gemma Ubasart in a message on social media. The decision was denounced by Human rights organisation Iridia which said that it was perpetuating a culture of silence about crimes committed by Franco's regime. "The refusal to investigate Francoism's crimes is a violation of the right to truth, justice and reparation, and it represents the ongoing perpetuation of a model of impunity which is based on silence and indifference and is still very present within Spain," it said in a statement. Spain: Court rejects man's claim of Franco-era torture

Spain's company PLD Space launched Miura-1 rocket on Saturday (Oct 7) marking Europe's first fully private rocket launch. Miura-1, a recoverable rocket was launched from a site in southwest Spain. The launch is being viewed as a boost to Europe's stalled space ambitions.

PLD Space's test launch at night from Huelva came after two previous attempts were scrubbed. The Miura-1 rocket has been name after a breed of fighting bull. The rocket is as tall as a three-storey building. It has a 100-kg (220-pound) cargo capacity.

The company said that the launch does carry payload for test purposes but the payload will not be released. Engineers were seen cheering in a mission control video as the rocket lifted off in the night sky.

"My voice is shot after so much shouting," said a triumphant Raul Torres, CEO of PLD Space, shortly after the launch.

He said that all rocket system were working "perfectly". He added that the company will now focus on tripling its workforce.

"This is just the beginning," he said.

Pedro Sanchez, Spain's acting Prime Minister took to social media to mark the occasion.

"The launch of the Miura 1, the first rocket with 100% Spanish technology, has been a success. A milestone that positions Spain's research and development at the forefront of space transportation," he said.

The flight of the rocket lasted for 306 seconds. The maximum height of 46 kilometres was however, just half the altitude the mission planners had aimed for, said Space[dot]com.

The company will recover the partially reusable launcher on Saturday. The launcher landed in the Atlantic Ocean.

The first attempt to launch Miura-1 was carried out in the month of May, but was abandoned because of high-altitude winds. A second attempt was carried out in June but it was a failure when umbilical cables did not all release in time . The lift-off was halted amid smoke and flames spewing from the rocket.

Europe's first fully private rocket launch takes place from Spain

Asian hornets, also known as yellow-legged hornets, have invaded large parts of mainland Europe and parts of east Asia. But now, a study has shown that they are possibly facing resistance from native species like bumblebees.

New research shows bumblebees have a remarkably successful method for fighting off Asian hornets. The study was published in the journal Communications Biology and led by a British university.

It comes at a time when a record level of Asian hornets have been observed in the UK and continental Europe this year, raising the risk for bees and prompting substantial control efforts.&nbsp;

<h2>How does this fight take place?</h2>

Scientists from the University of Exeter observed that when attacked, buff-tailed bumblebees drop to the ground and take the hornets down with them. This causes the hornet to either lose its grip or the bee raises its sting and tussles until the hornet gives up.

Researchers from the British university witnessed over 120 such attacks with bumblebees winning each time. However, this does not seem to be reflected in the numbers since the researchers also found that bumble bee colonies had reduced growth rates in areas with high numbers of Asian hornets.&nbsp;

This suggests that the hornets – despite their failed attempts to attack and enter the colonies – have a negative impact on the pollinators.&nbsp;

“Asian hornets prey on a wide range of insects, including honey bees, but little is known about their impact on other pollinators,” said Thomas O’Shea-Wheller, from Exeter’s Environment and Sustainability Institute, in a statement.&nbsp;

<h2>Does this help the bumblebees?</h2>

During the so-called fight between honey bees or bumble bees it was observed that the hornets do something called “hawking” which is essentially hovering outside the colony and attacking returning foragers as they fly past, O’Shea-Wheller explained.&nbsp;

Researchers also found that while hornets deploy the same method for both pollinators, with bumblebees, they are “entirely unsuccessful.” The study also noted that while honey bees are often unable to escape the clutches of Asian hornets, bumblebees’ defensive response appears to be more successful.&nbsp;

Speaking about the hornets’ low success rate, the researcher also said that hornets attack bumblebees of “all sizes” even some larger than them. He added, “They are very persistent and generalist predators, so these attacks may still be worthwhile despite the high failure rate, as long as they sometimes get a kill.”

For this study, researchers placed reared bumblebee colonies in 12 locations across the Spanish province of Pontevedra with varying local Asian hornet densities. These colonies were then weighed – as a way to measure colony growth – every two days.&nbsp;

Researchers noted that colonies in areas which had higher Asian hornet densities grew more slowly. “We can’t say for certain why this is. It’s possible that some external factor is good for Asian hornets, allowing them to thrive, but bad for bumblebees,” said O’Shea-Wheller.

Bumblebees have a ‘remarkably successful’ way of fighting off invasive Asian hornets: Study

At least 3,000 people were evacuated from the Spanish island of Tenerife overnight a day after a wildfire was sparked by unseasonably hot temperatures and strong winds, according to local officials, on Thursday (Oct 5). This comes months after the forested area was ravaged by wildfires prompting the evacuation of tens of thousands of people.&nbsp;

<h2>What is happening in Tenerife?</h2>

The Spanish island on Wednesday reported a wildfire months after it battled one of its worst in decades. The days-long blaze, back in August, destroyed some 15,000 hectares and forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people, with most returning to their homes.&nbsp;

Emergency services, on Thursday, took to X and said that they had requested assistance from the army’s emergency unit after the blaze which ignited on Wednesday afternoon (Oct 4) was categorised as a high-level emergency.&nbsp;

Firefighters backed by six water-dropping helicopters were battling the blaze, as per media reports, after the wildfire broke out in an area of steep ravines in the northeast of the island. According to the government of Tenerife, the same area was badly ravaged by the huge wildfire in August.&nbsp;

Earlier on Thursday, Lope Afonso, the vice president of the regional government of Tenerife wrote on Facebook and wrote that some 2,400 people were evacuated from the town of Santa Ursula, and another 600 from La Orotava.&nbsp;

An AFP report citing images and videos on social media said smoke was seen rising from a hill close to houses in a remote neighbourhood and helicopters dropping water on flames.&nbsp;

The seat of the fire “has been stabilised, we are seeing how it evolves to determine if in a few hours residents can return to their homes,” Blanca Perez, the island’s councillor in charge of emergencies, told local radio.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Gone well’</h2>

Speaking at a business event in Madrid on Thursday, the Canary Islands regional leader, Fernando Clavijo said that while the August fire had been brought under control, they had never been completely put out as embers were still burning in the forest.

He also reported that the overnight firefighting efforts had “gone well”.&nbsp;

Spain: Around 3,000 people evacuated in Tenerife after wildfire re-ignites

Spain's King Felipe VI on Tuesday (Oct 3) nominated outgoing Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to form next government after Sanchez's conservative rival failed in his bid to become premier last week. Sanchez has accepted the nomination, and he will now have to face a parliamentary vote for a new mandate. Sanchez has said that he would begin talks with main parties on Wednesday "without wasting time,"

"I will meet with all the different parliamentary parties except the far-right Vox, obviously," he said.

"I will work to form a progressive coalition government comprising the Socialist Party and (the radical left) Sumar as soon as possible with enough support to guarantee the stability Spain needs to continue promoting progressive policies and coexistence," he said.

Spain witnessed an inconclusive general election on July 23. Sanchez's Spanish Socialist Workers Party bagged fewer seats than Alberto Nunez Feijoo's conservatives. However, Sanchez has insisted that he can garner enough support for his candidacy as PM.

In order to reach the threshold of votes to continue in office, Sanchez would have to woo Catalan and Basque parties. Some of these parties advocate their region's independence from Spain. Sanchez has said that one of his government's main pillars would be working towards coexistence and concord between Spaniards, especially in Catalonia.

Francina Armengol, speaker of the lower house of the parliament has said that Sanchez was yet to share his schedule for investiture vote. A repeat election will be called in case no candidate secures a majority by November 27. It is likely that such an election, if the necessity arises, would be held in January.

Sanchez has been in power since 2018. He has proven to be a tenacious survivour. He has expressed confidence this time that he will retun to power with support from other political parties.

Spain: Birthday party goes awry as nightclub catches fire, 13 killed

A Spanish court, on Friday (Sep 29), closed the investigation into the death of software entrepreneur John McAfee as it ruled that he committed suicide.

McAfee, who launched the world's first commercial anti-virus software in the year 1987, was found dead on June 23, 2021, in his prison cell.

This happened just hours after a Spanish court gave a go-ahead for his extradition to the United States on tax evasion charges.&nbsp;

The British-American mogul had been imprisoned in the Barcelona-area Brians 2 jail for eight months following his arrest after years on the run from US authorities.

Although, in an autopsy, it was determined that he died by suicide, McAfee's widow had said he was not suicidal and that she would seek "answers".

"It's difficult to put into words what life has been like this past year," Janice McAfee wrote in a post last year and had called on the users to sign an online petition "to help pressure" Spanish authorities to release McAfee's remains.

His body has been in a Barcelona morgue, waiting for the court process to be resolved.

"There is not a single element of suspicion, of a charge against a third party, of criminal behaviour," said the ruling, dated July 24 but released on Friday.

"No indications of anything other than a violent death of suicidal origin, nothing at all", the court said.

<h2>Why was McAfee in trouble?</h2>

McAfee was arrested at Barcelona airport in October 2020 just before boarding a flight to Istanbul.

Since his arrest, he had been kept in prison awaiting extradition to the United States.

He was charged with tax evasion and securities fraud in connection with an alleged Bitcoin pump-and-dump scheme.

<h2>McAfee and crypto allegations</h2>

McAfee reportedly purchased a large number of cheap cryptocurrencies and then advertised them on the internet. To boost their market price, he allegedly used "false and deceptive tweets."&nbsp;

“McAfee team members collectively earned more than $2 million in illicit profits from their altcoin scalping activities,” the Justice Department had said in 2021.

McAfee shared a post on the internet about the allegations from the prison stating, “The US believes I have hidden crypto. I wish I did but it has dissolved through the many hands of Team McAfee (your belief is not required), and my remaining assets are all seized. My friends evaporated through fear of association. I have nothing. Yet, I regret nothing.”
