What began as a drug bust for the Spanish police turned into a hostage situation after a suspected cocaine smuggler killed a member of his own crew and held the others hostage on a boat from South America en route to Spain in the middle of the Atlantic, the interior ministry said on Wednesday (Feb 14).&nbsp;

<h2>What happened?</h2>

The Spanish police were conducting an operation following a tipoff about a vessel carrying 2.3 tonnes of cocaine from South America to Spain, in what the ministry described as the “mothership” named Sea Paradise.&nbsp;

The drugs were supposed to be transferred from the Panama-flagged ship to a smaller vessel before heading to the Canary Islands. However, as the police prepared to intercept the “mothership”, officers learned about the hostage situation that had unfolded.&nbsp;

The Spanish police scrambled to get to the vessel at an undisclosed location in the Atlantic after they found out that “one member of the tugboat crew, of Serbian origin, had kidnapped the rest of the crew” said the interior ministry in a statement, adding that the priority was now protecting those who were being held hostage.&nbsp;

In order to take control of the vessel, the person who kidnapped the crew had reportedly fatally shot one of the men and thrown his body into the sea. Less than 12 hours later the police arrived near the vessel and what followed was hours of negotiations with the hostage taker on the high seas.&nbsp;

The kidnapper ended up surrendering his weapon and freed the crew “who feared for their lives,” said the statement. The incident occurred in November, but was kept under judicial secrecy until an investigation was completed, said Spain’s interior ministry, on Wednesday.&nbsp;

The vessel was brought to Tenerife where the officials found 2.3 tonnes of cocaine in a “very difficult-to-access compartment” divided into bundles and attached to lights and water bottles so that the drugs could float in the water until it was collected.&nbsp;

The high-stakes operation led to the arrest of everyone on the ship, and the seizure of 2.3 tonnes of cocaine, as well as some electronic and satellite equipment, said the interior ministry.&nbsp;

<h2>One of the largest intercepts</h2>

The statement about the incident in November was also released just a few days after Spanish police seized eight tonnes of cocaine in one of its largest intercepts ever.&nbsp;

On Monday (Feb 12), Spain’s finance ministry said that the police had seized eight tonnes of cocaine hidden in a fake power generator in the southern port of Algeciras.&nbsp;

The haul of cocaine was inside a metal structure which was being transported from Suriname to Panama and then onwards to Algeciras, but was intercepted before making its way to Leixoes in Portugal.&nbsp;

The metal structure and the route were carefully chosen by the smugglers to avoid detection, said the Spanish officials. However, the customs agents said they had forced open the metal structure after detecting a “large amount of merchandise perfectly stacked in pallets,” which practically filled the container. &nbsp;

Drug bust takes dramatic turn after Spanish police rescue alleged smuggler’s crew taken hostage

In a shocking development, a 40-year-old woman from the United States went missing in Spain amid a bitter divorce. Ana Knezevich, a US citizen from Colombia, disappeared nearly two weeks ago.&nbsp;

Her family, as per the New York Post reports, claim that they received "bizarre messages" from her phone before she mysteriously vanished.

Knezevich's family revealed that she was going through a painful separation from her husband, who is originally from Serbia.

Knezevich, who decided to take a break and travel to Europe, went missing on Feb 5 in Madrid. She had plans to meet her friend in Barcelona, but never arrived there, Knezevich's brother Felipe Henao said.

Henao stated that his sister mysteriously vanished after a man, who was spotted wearing a helmet, blacked out security cameras at the apartment by using spray paint.

He then said that the family members got extremely worried after they got text messages in Spanish from Knezevich's number.

"That message in Spanish, it is like it's translated from Google. It's not her. She doesn't say those things. Like nobody in Spanish will say it like that," Henao was quoted as saying by DailyMail.

The messages, when translated, said that Knezevich was visiting a person who lived two hours away from Madrid for a few days and that she would get in touch with them as soon as she was back as there was no phone service available there.

Knezevich's friend Sanna Rameau said that she was last seen on Feb 2 by her neighbours.

Rameau said that the day when Knezevich went missing, she sent her a text message but did not receive a reply.

However, she got a text message the next day from her number saying that she had met a person whom she had an instant connection with and that she would call Rameau as soon as she got back.

“We received very bizarre messages from her phone, I have to say from her phone because I don't believe it was her sending it, that Saturday afternoon after she disappeared. That she had met a man on the street,” Rameau told WSVN.

The Spanish authorities, as per the local media reports, have launched an inquiry and are now investigating the matter.

In response to Catalonia's ongoing three-year drought, Spain has announced an investment of $502 million (467 million euros) in the construction of two desalination plants along the Catalan coast.<o:p></o:p>

This is based on a Reuters report.<o:p></o:p>

These facilities, strategically placed north and south of Barcelona, Spain's second-largest city, are anticipated to commence operations in 2028 and 2029, offering a combined annual capacity to treat 80 million cubic meters (21 billion gallons) of water. <o:p></o:p>

The initiative comes as a vital measure to address the region's severe water scarcity, marked by Catalonia's reservoirs currently standing at a mere 16 per cent of their normal capacity for this time of the year.<o:p></o:p>

"The government's commitment is to do everything possible to help wherever needed to guarantee drinkable water," Environment Minister Teresa Ribera said at a news conference in Barcelona.<o:p></o:p>

Catalonia, facing unprecedented challenges with its reservoirs at critically low levels, has implemented stringent water usage limits for residents. <o:p></o:p>

These restrictions aim to alleviate pressure on the already strained water resources in the region. <o:p></o:p>

Ribera disclosed additional plans, indicating that the government, in collaboration with local water utilities, intends to transport up to 40,000 cubic meters of desalinated water daily via sea routes. <o:p></o:p>

The desalinated water will be sourced from a plant situated in Sagunto, within the Valencia region, further underscoring Spain's multi-faceted approach to address the pressing water crisis.<o:p></o:p>

The move towards desalination is a strategic response to the changing climate patterns and the increasing frequency of droughts. <o:p></o:p>

The two desalination plants are expected to play a pivotal role in securing a more resilient water supply for Catalonia in the face of future uncertainties. <o:p></o:p>

The projects signify a proactive step by the Spanish government to adapt and respond to the evolving environmental challenges, with the long-term goal of ensuring sustainable water resources for its citizens.<o:p></o:p>

WION Business Wrap | Hyundai's IPO in India, Spain's investment in desalination plants and more

Spain's lower house on Tuesday rejected an amnesty bill due to differences on its scope between the ruling Socialists and a Catalan separatist party, in a blow for Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez that illustrates his parliamentary fragility.

The bill, rejected by 179 votes to 171, will now return for debate in a parliamentary committee and could eventually be sent back for another vote in the lower house. The amnesty bill is set to define Sanchez's second term and has prompted large protests against it.

Catalan separatists Junts voted against the law after they failed to reach a last-minute deal with Sanchez's Spanish Socialist Workers' Party.

Junts wanted all exceptions related to terrorism to be removed from the bill since some of its politicians are currently under investigation by courts over alleged terrorism-related crimes.

The bill was put forward by the Socialists in exchange for support for Sanchez's new term in office from Catalan separatist parties Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya and Junts.

"Junts cannot participate in leaving all Catalan separatism exposed to the arbitrariness of the politicised Spanish judiciary," said lawmaker Miriam Nogueras. She said the current amnesty proposal was too selective and has loopholes.

But Sanchez's party had said that some crimes involving terrorism-related charges could not be pardoned.

The amnesty would cover all events related to the Catalan independence drive from 2012, including a symbolic vote held in 2014 and an independence referendum in 2017, which courts declared as illegal.

It is expected to benefit several hundred separatists as well as some police officers who stormed polling stations during the referendum.

Sanchez, who opposed an amnesty in the past and still rejects a referendum on independence, has argued that the bill seeks to foster reconciliation. The conservative opposition accused him of undermining the rule of law.

“This moment was undoubtedly huge for him and his loved ones and we’re glad that they have been able to see each other again after all this time,” said the British police.&nbsp;

The GMP has yet to take a formal statement from Alex and did not comment on the details disclosed by the French authorities about what he may have been doing when he went missing.

“Speaking with him (Alex) at a pace that feels comfortable to him will ultimately determine how this case is progressed, and whether there is a criminal investigation to ensue,” said GMP.&nbsp;

<h2>Why did Alex leave the UK?</h2>

Alex hails from Oldham, Greater Manchester and has been returned to his maternal grandmother Susan Caruana, whom the British justice system had entrusted with his custody before his alleged abduction.

According to reports, Alex was allegedly abducted by his mother Melanie Batty and grandfather David Batty. Due to domestic issues, both adults were banned from being with the youngster at the time.&nbsp;

Alex’s mother, Melanie is yet to be found but could be in Finland, according to Toulouse assistant prosecutor Antoine Leroy. Alex reportedly told the police that his grandfather, David may have died six months ago but it is unclear where he might have been buried.

Susan Caruana, who was Alex’s grandmother and official guardian, believed that her ex-partner and her daughter had run away with Alex and had settled into “an alternative lifestyle” somewhere.&nbsp;

She believed, at the time of Alex’s disappearance, that Melanie and David had taken him abroad and “got involved with a cult”.

“I can’t wait to see him when we’re reunited,” said Caruana. “The main thing is that he’s safe, after what would be an overwhelming experience for anyone, not least a child.”&nbsp;

The 17-year-old was found by a delivery driver after he had walked for four days and nights, said a deputy prosecutor. A doctor who examined him said that he is in good health and does not appear to have been abused in the years since his abduction, reported AFP.&nbsp;

Alex had been in France for two years before he was found, he told the investigators, and had lived a “nomadic” life in a “spiritual community” but would not stay in the same place for more than several months at a time.&nbsp;

Alex also reportedly told investigators that he had spent time in a spiritual community centre focused on “work on the ego, meditation and reincarnation” when his mother said she was moving to Finland and he decided to leave.&nbsp;

Alex had been walking along the road by night to avoid detection and foraging food from gardens and fields along the way, when a student working as a delivery driver, Fabien Accidini, picked Alex up between two villages in the pouring rain.&nbsp;

“He clearly needed help,” Fabien told AFP, and since Alex did not speak French very well, he spoke to him in English. Alex who was also suspicious of Fabien initially gave him a fake name but as the boy helped him with his deliveries he opened up.&nbsp;

Spain is developing an age verification technology in a bid to protect children from inappropriate online content. Users will have to verify their age after downloading an app or QR code or certificate to access websites.

Spain is developing age verification technology to prevent children from accessing inappropriate content online such as pornography or gambling sites, the head of the data protection agency said on Thursday (Dec 14).

Concerns about the impact of pornographic, violent and other harmful material on the younger generation&nbsp;still developing their identity&nbsp;is growing worldwide, as digitalisation and smartphones have made access to such materials&nbsp;easier online.

More than half of Spanish teenagers have watched pornography before turning 13, according to a report by the NGO Save the Children.

"Just by checking the age of access to adult content, we can have a profound impact on a person's development, health and life," Mar Espana, who helms national data protection agency AEPD, told a news conference.

Earlier this month, Britain introduced new age-checking guidance to prevent children from accessing online pornography.

The inappropriate use of smartphones by Spanish minors came into the spotlight in September when prosecutors launched a probe into fake nude pictures of young girls generated through an artificial intelligence app that were circulating on social media and chatrooms used by teenagers.

On Wednesday (Dec 13), Education Minister Pilar Alegria floated regulating the use of phones in schools, proposing zero use during school hours in primary schools and only under teacher supervision for educational purposes at secondary schools.

She will meet with regional governments, which handle their own education policy, in January to discuss the plan's implementation.

The new technology is being developed by the Royal Spanish Mint following AEPD recommendations. It will allow providers to ensure that the Internet user is an adult or has the minimum required age to access social media.

Users will download an app, a QR code or a certificate that verifies their age - using either an ID, a health or residence card, a driving licence or a passport - to access websites without disclosing any personal data to third parties.

Tennis: World no. 1 Novak Djokovic to feature in United Cup 2024, veteran Nadal to miss out

Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas both scored twice as Barcelona began their defence of the Women's Champions League title on Tuesday with a comprehensive 5-0 victory over Benfica, while a ruthless Lyon hit nine against Slavia Prague. Barcelona are aiming to win the Champions League for the third time in four seasons and their strength in depth was summed up by the presence of six players in their starting line-up who played in August's World Cup final in Sydney, when Spain beat England 1-0.

A crowd of fewer than 5,000 watched Putellas, who was a substitute in the World Cup final after missing almost all of last season due to a serious knee injury, head in the opener with quarter of an hour played. Putellas then followed up to make it 2-0 on the line when a header by Esmee Brugts beat the Portuguese side's goalkeeper, and Bonmati got the third with a composed finish just before the interval.

Putellas was replaced at the break and Bonmati then netted again seven minutes after the restart having been set up by Caroline Graham Hansen. Nigeria's Asisat Oshoala wrapped up a convincing victory by scoring with an overhead kick just seconds after coming on as a substitute.

"The motivation for this club is to arrive in the Champions League final every year," Barcelona's England midfielder Keira Walsh told DAZN. "If you look at the mentality of these girls, that's what I saw when I came in here. "It was always, constantly being at the top in training every single day. It's so competitive and that speaks for itself."

Also in Group A, Eintracht Frankfurt won 2-1 away to Rosengard of Sweden, with captain Tanja Pawollek opening the scoring before Barbara Dunst netted the second for the Germans, who have won the competition four times. Captain Olivia Schough pulled a goal back for Rosengard, the Swedish champions.

<h2>Hegerberg's 60th goal</h2>

Lyon, the record eight-time Champions League winners, are expected to make short work of Group B and they showed no mercy to their hosts in the Czech Republic. France star Kadidiatou Diani, a close-season signing from Paris Saint-Germain, netted twice for Lyon while 2018 Ballon d'Or winner Ada Hegerberg scored a penalty in the second half.

The Norwegian is the Champions League's all-time top scorer and that was her 60th goal in the competition. There was also a brace for Canadian defender Vanessa Gilles, with Sara Daebritz, Danielle van de Donk, Eugenie Le Sommer and substitute Amel Majri getting their other goals.

Seen as one of the main threats to Barcelona's hopes of retaining the trophy, Lyon's next game will be at home to the Austrian side St Poelten. "If everything goes the way we want it to go, we can go far in every competition," said the Lyon coach, Sonia Bompastor.

St Poelten were beaten 2-1 at home by Brann of Norway on Tuesday, with US-born Icelandic international defender Natasha Anasi scoring the winner for the visitors. The other groups get underway on Wednesday, when English champions Chelsea travel to play Real Madrid in Group D. Chelsea boss Emma Hayes was on Tuesday confirmed as the next coach of the United States, a position she will take up after this season.

It's so competitive and that speaks for itself." Captain Olivia Schough pulled a goal back for Rosengard, the Swedish champions. Hegerberg's 60th goal Lyon, the record eight-time Champions League winners, are expected to make short work of Group B and they showed no mercy to their hosts in the Czech Republic.

Real Madrid forwardR has become "unfortunately used to" racism in Spain, his coach Carlo Ancelotti said Saturday. The Brazilian has been repeatedly racially abused over the past two seasons, with Barcelona and La Liga investigating further alleged abuse in Madrid's Clasico win last weekend.

Valencia-based newspaper Super Deporte also ran another front cover this week attacking the forward, saying they were "fed up of Pinochius" -- linking Vinicius with fictional character Pinocchio, whose nose grows with every lie he tells.

Vinicius complained of racist abuse at Valencia's Mestalla stadium in May, earning worldwide support after he faced off with a supporter he said had abused him in the stands.

The 23-year-old testified before a Spanish court on October 5 by videoconference as part of an investigation into the alleged abuse in Valencia. "He's good. I think that he is unfortunately used to this," Ancelotti told a news conference ahead of Madrid's clash with Rayo Vallecano on Sunday at the Santiago Bernabeu.

"He is focused on the game and focused on his work. I don't have to say anything to him in that regard." Vinicius has struggled to hit his best form this season, along with his Brazilian compatriot Rodrygo Goes, but new arrival Jude Bellingham has hit 10 league goals to propel Madrid to the top of the table.

Ancelotti backed Vinicius and Rodrygo, who both signed new contracts with Real Madrid this week to 2027 and 2028 respectively, to find their shooting boots sooner rather than later. "Rodrygo and Vinicius will score more goals through the season, that is obvious," said Ancelotti.

"They will score more than Bellingham and Joselu, about that we have no doubt. "The important thing is that when they aren't, Bellingham and Joselu are there, who have done very well in this first part of the season. But Rodrygo and Vinicius will get back to scoring with no problems, we're not in a hurry."

Bellingham netted both of Madrid's goals in their 2-1 Clasico triumph and has taken the Spanish capital by storm. "For now, he has shown no defects," added Ancelotti.&nbsp;

"He does not have to improve, at this level the important thing is consistency, above all with a talent like him. "What makes the difference in big players is the consistency that they have to have in matches, and for now he's had it."

Spain's Catholic Church said Friday it will receive an audit it ordered into child sexual abuse by members of the clergy on December 15, after an independent commission estimated over 200,000 victims.&nbsp;

The Church in February 2022 tasked private law firm Cremades &amp; Calvo-Sotelo with an audit into past and present sexual abuse by clergy, teachers and others.&nbsp;

The move was labelled as a "smokescreen" by a victim's association which have long accused it of stonewalling and denial. &nbsp;

Unlike in other nations like France, Ireland and the United States, in Spain -- a traditionally Catholic country that has become highly secular -- clerical abuse allegations are only now gaining traction. &nbsp;

The audit was originally expected to be delivered within a year but was delayed.&nbsp;

The law firm will now deliver the report on December 15, the secretary general of the Spanish Bishops Conference, Francisco Garcia Magan, told a news conference, but he did not say when it would be made public.&nbsp;

Last month, Spain's first independent probe into the issue estimated that over 200,000 minors had been sexually abused in the country of around 39 million people by Roman Catholic clergy since 1940. &nbsp;

The report did not give a specific figure, but said a poll of over 8,000 people found some 0.6 percent of Spain's adult population said they had suffered sexual abuse by members of the clergy when they were still children. &nbsp;

The percentage rises to 1.13 per cent -- or over 400,000 people -- when including abuse by lay members, according to the results of the probe which was led by Spain's national ombudsman. &nbsp;

In a message posted to social media after the report's publication, Cardinal Juan Jose Omella, president of the Episcopal Conference, said the Church was aware of 1,125 cases of sexual abuse.&nbsp;

Omella on Monday rejected  "the dubious reliability of the results" of the independent probe and called for "an exhaustive and impartial examination of the data" that was used for what he called  "malicious purposes".&nbsp;

The independent commission recommended the creation of a state compensation fund for victims, an idea supported by Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.&nbsp;

But Spain's Catholic Church has ruled out taking part in such a fund if it is set up exclusively to compensate victims clerical abuse, and not all minors who are victims of sexual abuse in any setting. &nbsp;

To do so would be "discrimination", said Omella.&nbsp;

The Spanish Bishops Conference said Friday it would draw up a "comprehensive reparation plan for the victims" that will apply even if the statute of limitations for the abuse has expired or the perpetrator has died. It gave no further details.&nbsp;

Sánchez declared, "With four female deputy prime ministers and more female ministers than male ministers, the new government is going to have a marked feminist accent." Nine new ministers will join the Cabinet, but important positions will stay the same. Margarita Robles continues to oversee defense, José Manuel Albares continues to oversee foreign affairs, and Nadia Calviño continues to oversee the economy.
