Norway, Ireland, and Spain have formally recognized the state of Palestine, joining over 140 of the 193 UN member countries. Norway’s Foreign Minister, Espen Barth Eide, told our Diplomatic Correspondent Sidhant Sibal, “It is the right thing to do at the right time.” Eide highlighted that India had recognized Palestine in the 1980s, a move Norway emulated last week. This recognition marks a significant diplomatic shift and reinforces Palestine's status on the international stage at the time when Israel Gaza situation continues to deteriorate. Spain's Congress on Thursday overturned an upper house veto with its final approval of a disputed amnesty for Catalan separatists that is expected to set the stage for Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's second term and allow the return of an exiled pro-independence leader.

The bill, approved by 177-172 votes, will become law once it is published in the official gazette as early as Friday. Courts will then have up to two months to apply the law, expected to annul the legal records of hundreds of officials and activists involved in Catalonia's separatist push since 2011.

The bill has caused large protests over the past few months, enraging some judges and the conservative opposition, which plans to challenge it in courts.

In a survey by El Mundo newspaper in March, 62% of respondents across&nbsp;Spain&nbsp;rejected the amnesty, but in the Catalonia region alone most voters - 48% - supported it.

Sanchez put forward the amnesty proposal last year in exchange for support in parliament from two Catalan separatist parties - Junts and Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya - for him to stay on as premier after an inconclusive election.

He has argued amnesty will bring reconciliation with the northeastern region seven years after its illegal referendum and unilateral declaration of independence set off&nbsp;Spain's worst political crisis in over 30 years.

"Today is a historic day. Nothing is forgiven, instead a battle is won in the centuries-long conflict between the Catalan and Spanish nations," said Junts' lawmaker Miriam Nogueras in a heated parliamentary debate.

Sanchez's approach was largely vindicated earlier this month when his Socialist Party won Catalonia's regional election and separatists lost their long-running parliamentary majority.

The Socialists hope the amnesty will help cement their alliance with the small parties they rely on to pass legislation in the national parliament.

Junts' leader Carles Puigdemont, who fled to Belgium after spearheading the failed independence bid in 2017, will be the amnesty's most high-profile beneficiary as the Spanish arrest warrant he faces over those events is expected to be lifted.

Puigdemont, who was the second most popular candidate in Catalonia's election, has said he will return to&nbsp;Spain&nbsp;the day parliament convenes to elect the new Catalan president but no date has been set yet as no party clinched an outright majority.&nbsp;

Spain on Monday (May 27) pledged to provide military aid to Ukraine worth 1 billion euros ($1.08 billion) in 2024 under a security deal signed between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Madrid.

The deal "includes a commitment for one billion euros in military aid for 2024," Sanchez told a joint press conference.

"It will allow Ukraine to boost its capabilities including its essential air defence systems to protect its civilians, cities and infrastructure which are still suffering indiscriminate attacks as seen this weekend in Kharkiv," he said, referring to a Russian strike on the northeastern city that killed at least 16 people.

Zelensky's visit comes as Ukraine battles Russia's ground offensive in the Kharkiv region which started on May 10.

Sanchez stated that Spain had already vowed to provide Ukraine with Patriot missiles, however, what Zelensky needed from Ukraine's allies was "the systems to launch these missiles".

"That's what he working on with different allies to see exactly how many we can send to guarantee this aerial security."

Spain would also send "another batch of Leopard tanks and above all ammunition," Sanchez said, pledging to keep working with Kyiv "to understand how else -- and with what other alternative systems -- we can help ensure Ukraine's air security."

Sanchez, elucidating on the security deal said that it would cover several issues from "military, humanitarian and financial support, to collaboration between Spanish and Ukrainian defence industries, as well as help with reconstruction and de-mining among other things". &nbsp;&nbsp;

Zelensky has previously signed bilateral security agreements with countries including France, Germany and the UK.&nbsp;

Ireland Norway and Spain have announced their decision to formally recognize Palestine as a state amid the raging Israel Hamas war in Gaza and as a result of the decision Israel has now recalled its ambassadors to Ireland and Norway with immediate effect. Watch in for more details!

Spain, Ireland & Norway to recognise Palestine as a state

Spain recalled its ambassador to Buenos Aires for consultations on Sunday after Argentina's President Javier Milei made derogatory comments about Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's wife during a far-right rally in Madrid.

Milei had called Sanchez's wife Begona Gomez "corrupt" during a rally in Madrid organised by the far-right Vox party and attended by many of its international allies.

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said he expected an apology from Milei.

Other ministers also condemned Milei's speech, in which he described socialism as "cursed and carcinogenic". Sanchez leads Spain's Socialist Party.

"With his behaviour, Milei has brought the relationship between Spain and Argentina to its most serious state in recent history," Albares said in a video statement.

Milei would not apologize, his spokesperson said in an interview with an Argentine TV channel later Sunday. Spanish officials should retract insults they have made against him, he added.

Milei's visit broke with diplomatic protocol as he refused to meet Spain's King Felipe and Sanchez, instead preferring to promote his book alongside Vox leader Santiago Abascal at the party rally.

The European Union's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, said in a post on social messaging app X that "attacks against family members of political leaders have no place in our culture".

Spain's main opposition party, the conservative People's Party (PP), refused to support Madrid's stance, with party sources saying that Sanchez should have provided explanations about the alleged corruption case weeks ago.

"His silence generates internal doubts, but also distrust abroad," a PP source said, adding that the party's job was to oppose the Spanish government and not Milei.

A city court said in April it was looking into accusations of influence peddling and business corruption against Sanchez's wife, brought in a private complaint by Manos Limpias, or Clean Hands, an anti-corruption activist group.

However, Madrid's prosecuting authority later said it was appealing to have the case thrown out for lack of evidence. Sanchez decided to stay in office after five days of weighing his future once the probe against his wife was announced.

Results are out for regional elections held in Spain's autonomous region of Catalonia. Voters have given a clear mandate to the Socialist Party.

Catalonia elections: Socialist party sweeps mandate

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's Socialists won a clear victory in Sunday's Catalan regional election, in which Carles Puigdemont and fellow separatists lost their majority after 10 years in power.&nbsp;

The vote came six years after Puigdemont led a botched 2017 independence bid that triggered Spain's worst political crisis in decades.&nbsp;

Led by Salvador Illa, Spain's health minister during the pandemic, the Catalan Socialist party won 42 of the regional parliament's 135 seats -- nine more than in the previous election in 2021.&nbsp;

Hailing the result as "historic" in a posting on X, Sanchez said it would mark the start of "a new era in Catalonia".&nbsp;

"A new era for all Catalans, whatever they think," said Illa as his supporters cheered his victory.&nbsp;

It was a major victory for Sanchez, who had wanted to show that his policy of defusing tensions triggered by the Catalan crisis had worked, ultimately reducing pro-independence sentiment in this wealthy northeastern region of eight million people.&nbsp;

And it gives him some much-needed breathing space after a difficult start to his latest term in office which began in November and has been soured by right-wing opposition and a graft probe into his wife that almost caused him to resign.

Since becoming premier in 2018 in the months following the failed separatist bid, Sanchez has sought to "heal the wounds" caused by the unprecedented political crisis&nbsp;

In 2021, he pardoned the separatists jailed over the secession bid and is currently advancing an amnesty bill for those still wanted by the justice system in exchange for key separatist backing that let him secure a new term in office.

<h2>No more separatist majority</h2>

In gaining more than 200,000 votes, the Socialists managed to deprive the pro-independence parties of the majority they needed to stay in power in a region they have ruled for the past decade.&nbsp;

Final results showed Puigdemont's hardline JxCat, the moderate ERC of outgoing Catalan leader Pere Aragones and the smaller hard-left CUP secured 59 seats, compared with 74 last time.&nbsp;

Even if they were to count the two seats won by the new ultranationalist Catalan Alliance, they would still be well short of the 68 seats required to rule.&nbsp;

JxCat won 35 seats, slightly higher than last time, while ERC fell sharply to 20, down 13, and CUP won just four, down from nine.&nbsp;

Puigdemont, 61, fled Spain to avoid prosecution following the botched secession bid and has lived in self-imposed exile ever since, running his campaign from southern France.&nbsp;

Although he will be allowed back when the amnesty bill becomes law, he had hoped a strong showing in Sunday's vote would have seen him re-elected leader, paving the way for a triumphant return.&nbsp;

He pledged to retire from politics if he failed to win.&nbsp;

<h2>Alliance building</h2>

Despite his victory, Illa is still a long way from the 68 seats required to rule and must now seek out the necessary backing to be sworn in as regional leader.&nbsp;

Although the Socialists also won most votes in 2021, Illa was unable to cobble together a majority while the separatists managed to piece together a 74-seat coalition.

Analysts say the most likely option would see the Socialists allying with the radical left Comuns Sumar, which won six seats, and ERC, which won 20.

Together they could count exactly 68 seats.&nbsp;

The vote also saw a breakthrough by the right-wing opposition Popular Party which won 15 seats up from three in the previous election, while the far-right Vox held onto its 11 mandates.&nbsp;

Both parties are vehemently opposed to the pro-independence movement and have fought tooth and nail against Sanchez's amnesty bill which will become law within weeks, allowing Puigdemont to return home.&nbsp;

Voter Ainhoa Matos, 31, expressed hope the election would give a greater voice to non-separatist Catalans.&nbsp;

"People like me who are not pro-independence have not had enough of a voice or representation, so I hope that can change," she told AFP.

Hailing the result as "historic" in a posting on X, Sanchez said it would mark the start of "a new era in Catalonia". Also read | The Capitals: Madrid's tryst with women's rights, Pretoria avoids 'risking war' with Moscow "A new era for all Catalans, whatever they think," said Illa as his supporters cheered his victory. It was a major victory for Sanchez, who had wanted to show that his policy of defusing tensions triggered by the Catalan crisis had worked, ultimately reducing pro-independence sentiment in this wealthy northeastern region of eight million people. And it gives him some much-needed breathing space after a difficult start to his latest term in office which began in November and has been soured by right-wing opposition and a graft probe into his wife that almost caused him to resign. Also watch | Catalonia elections: Catalonia polls to impact on Spain's politics × Since becoming premier in 2018 in the months following the failed separatist bid, Sanchez has sought to "heal the wounds" caused by the unprecedented political crisis In 2021, he pardoned the separatists jailed over the secession bid and is currently advancing an amnesty bill for those still wanted by the justice system in exchange for key separatist backing that let him secure a new term in office. No more separatist majority In gaining more than 200,000 votes, the Socialists managed to deprive the pro-independence parties of the majority they needed to stay in power in a region they have ruled for the past decade. Final results showed Puigdemont's hardline JxCat, the moderate ERC of outgoing Catalan leader Pere Aragones and the smaller hard-left CUP secured 59 seats, compared with 74 last time. Even if they were to count the two seats won by the new ultranationalist Catalan Alliance, they would still be well short of the 68 seats required to rule. JxCat won 35 seats, slightly higher than last time, while ERC fell sharply to 20, down 13, and CUP won just four, down from nine. Puigdemont, 61, fled Spain to avoid prosecution following the botched secession bid and has lived in self-imposed exile ever since, running his campaign from southern France. Although he will be allowed back when the amnesty bill becomes law, he had hoped a strong showing in Sunday's vote would have seen him re-elected leader, paving the way for a triumphant return. He pledged to retire from politics if he failed to win. Alliance building Despite his victory, Illa is still a long way from the 68 seats required to rule and must now seek out the necessary backing to be sworn in as regional leader. Together they could count exactly 68 seats. The vote also saw a breakthrough by the right-wing opposition Popular Party which won 15 seats up from three in the previous election, while the far-right Vox held onto its 11 mandates. Both parties are vehemently opposed to the pro-independence movement and have fought tooth and nail against Sanchez's amnesty bill which will become law within weeks, allowing Puigdemont to return home. Voter Ainhoa Matos, 31, expressed hope the election would give a greater voice to non-separatist Catalans. "People like me who are not pro-independence have not had enough of a voice or representation, so I hope that can change," she told AFP.

Separatists lose Catalan majority as Spain Socialists surge

Catalans are voting in a regional election that could return to power a separatist politician who led a breakaway attempt back in 2017 or an anti-independence government led by the Socialist Party.

Catalonia elections: Catalonia polls to impact on Spain's politics

Spain's government on Tuesday appointed former national squad coach Vicente del Bosque as head of a new committee supervising the country's scandal-ridden RFEF soccer federation, Sports Minister Pilar Alegria said. Spain, which will co-host the 2030 World Cup, last week announced the creation of a special committee to oversee RFEF until the governing body holds new elections. FIFA and UEFA said they were closely monitoring the situation with great concern.

The move followed months of scandals including a corruption investigation and the dismissal of its chief Luis Rubiales after he planted an unsolicited kiss on the mouth of player Jenni Hermoso during the on-pitch awards ceremony after the Spanish women's World Cup triumph in Sydney last year. Del Bosque led the Spanish men's team to their first World Cup title in 2010 and followed that up by clinching Spain's second successive European Championship two years later.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced that he is suspending his public duties to "stop and reflect" on whether he should continue holding the position after a preliminary inquiry, involving his wife Begona Gomez, was started by the court.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced that he is suspending his public duties to "stop and reflect" on whether he should continue holding the position after a preliminary inquiry, involving his wife Begona Gomez, was started by the court. The prime minister, in a statement, said that he immediately needed to decide "whether I should continue to lead the government or renounce this honour". The court stated that the investigation has been opened in response to the corruption claims made against Begoña Gomez. Taking to X, Sanchez said that a probe was opened against his wife Begoña Gomez, “at the request of a far-right organisation called Manos Limpias (Clean Hands) to investigate the alleged crimes of influence peddling and corruption in her business dealings.” Spanish PM says complaint based on “right and far-right” digital media The Spanish prime minister added that the complaint by Clean Hands was based on “alleged information” which was published by what he called “right and far-right” digital media. "Now that we’ve reached this point, the question I quite legitimately ask myself is, ‘is it all worth it?’ I sincerely don’t know. I need to stop and think about it … All of which leads me to tell you that I will keep working, but cancel all my public duties for a few days while I decide which path to take. Next Monday, 29 April, I’ll appear before the media to let you know my decision," PM Sanchez said. In his statement, Sanchez further complained about a "strategy of harassment" over months which is aimed at politically weakening him and also targeting his wife personally. Special wildlife police in eastern Spain have rescued many endangered animals in the past year. This includes Nile crocodiles, a heavy African spurred tortoise, and a large Burmese python. The officers recovered various protected species, according to the Seprona division of the Guardia Civil, as reported by the Guardian.&nbsp;

“The two Nile crocodiles, which each measured approximately 2 metres, were collected by officers from a private estate in El Moralet in Alicante province last August,” the statement said.

“At the end of 2023, a two-metre-long Burmese python was found in Alicante’s city centre. The African spurred tortoise, which weighed around 25kg, had been abandoned in the Sierra de Oltá mountains in Calpe,” it said.

Seprona also took possession of a Patagonian burrowing parrot and a Venezuelan blood-eared parakeet, among other animals.

“The rescued animals were taken to different rehabilitation centres, lodges and parks where specialists were able to evaluate their condition and provide the required treatment,” the statement said. “These facilities also offer the food, space and care needed to ensure each of the species can enjoy an optimal quality of life.”
