European champions Spain sealed their place in the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Serbia on Tuesday, while Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal were frustrated in a 0-0 draw with Scotland. Spain, who are also the reigning Nations League champions, became the second team to clinch a quarter-final spot as they followed in the footsteps of Germany by moving to 10 points from a possible 12 in Group A4.

Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, the two wing stars of Spain's triumphant Euro 2024 campaign, were not involved against Serbia on a rainy night in the Andalusian city of Cordoba. Yet that didn't matter as La Roja went ahead through Aymeric Laporte's early header and then shook off Alvaro Morata's penalty miss at the start of the second half.

Captain Morata made it 2-0 with a lovely finish on 65 minutes and Alex Baena, who featured at the Euros before starring in the Spain team that won Olympic gold, made it 3-0 from a free-kick. Serbia finished with 10 men after defender Strahinja Pavlovic was sent off. "We're in another final phase, which is the important thing -- it might seem easy but we're in all of these final phases in recent years, and that deserves credit," Morata told state broadcaster TVE.

Denmark are best placed to go through with Spain after they drew 2-2 away to Switzerland, who prop up the group.

The Danes twice came from behind, with Remo Freuler's opener cancelled out almost immediately by Gustav Isaksen, only for Zeki Amdouni to put the Swiss back ahead with a penalty in first-half stoppage time.

However, Christian Eriksen struck on 69 minutes to ensure Denmark left St Gallen with a point. Portugal dropped points for the first time in Group A1 as they were forced to settle for a share of the spoils with Scotland at Hampden.

On his 216th international appearance, Ronaldo made his 200th start for his country, more than 21 years on from his first. However, the 39-year-old failed to add to his 133 Portugal goals and stormed off the field at full-time ranting at the officials.

The home side needed a wonder save from goalkeeper Craig Gordon to deny Bruno Fernandes a winner for Portugal in the closing stages, but held out to secure their first point in the top tier of the Nations League.

That allowed them to end a run of four straight competitive defeats, but they have now won just once -- in a friendly against Gibraltar -- in their last 16 matches.

"Their goalkeeper was incredible. We couldn't get a goal, but the performance was positive," Portugal coach Roberto Martinez told UEFA.com. "Results are a consequence of performances and, tonight, we deserved to win."

Croatia are second in the group behind Portugal after playing out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Poland in Warsaw, in a match which featured five first-half goals. Piotr Zielinski of Inter Milan, wearing the captain's armband as Robert Lewandowski started on the bench, gave Poland an early lead.

However, Borna Sosa equalised and further goals by Petar Sucic and Martin Baturina put Croatia 3-1 up after 26 minutes. Nicola Zalewski pulled one back in first-half stoppage time and Sebastian Szymanski secured a draw for Poland with a terrific strike midway through the second half.

Croatia ended the game with 10 men after goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic was shown a red card for catching Lewandowski outside the area. In the third-tier League C, Northern Ireland went top of Group 3 with a 5-0 win over Bulgaria in Belfast.

Isaac Price of Standard Liege in Belgium was the hero with a hat-trick, as the 21-year-old became the country's youngest ever scorer of three goals in a game. Northern Ireland's last hat-trick scorer was David Healy in 2007.

An own goal by goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov and a late Josh Magennis effort completed the scoring, while captain Kiril Despodov missed a penalty for Bulgaria.

Belarus and Luxembourg drew 1-1 in the same group, while there were wins for Romania and Kosovo against Lithuania and Cyprus respectively in Group C2.

Spanish authorities on Tuesday said they had arrested four people suspected of orchestrating a sanctions-busting commercial network after intercepting 13 tonnes of chemical products bound for Russia.

The investigation began in 2022 after Western countries imposed waves of sanctions on Russia to prevent it from acquiring equipment and technologies for its invasion of Ukraine.

Police and customs officials impounded the chemical products found in a container in the port of Barcelona, Spanish national police said in a statement.

A 26-year-old British man died after falling from Spain’s tallest bridge on Sunday, local authorities said on Monday (Oct 14). The man had climbed the bridge to make social media content.

The unidentified man was accompanied by a 24-year-old fellow British national when he fell from the Castilla-La Mancha Bridge in the central city of Talavera de la Reina. According to reports, the man attempted to climb the cable-stayed bridge without any safety equipment.

Spain: Search Resumes For 48 Missing Migrants After Boat Capsizes In Canary Islands

A tragic incident off the coast of the Canary Islands left at least nine migrants dead and 48 missing after their boat capsized in rough waters on Friday. The journey, which began in North Africa, carried migrants attempting to enter Europe. Spanish coastguards rescued 60 survivors from the vessel.

Spain: 9 Migrants Dead, 48 Missing After Boat Capsizes Near Canary Islands | World News | WION

Rescue teams on Sunday resumed searching for at least 48 migrants who went missing the day before when their boat overturned just as it was being rescued off Spain's Canary Islands, killing at least nine people.

Hopes of finding survivors were slim as sea rescue teams searched the waters off El Hierro, an island in the Atlantic archipelago.

It is the latest in a series of such disasters off the coast of Africa.

"The search operation is resuming," Spain's maritime rescue organisation told AFP.

The 48 are "presumed dead", Canaries regional president Fernando Clavijo told journalists on Saturday night.

More bodies will likely appear "over the next two, three days", washed up by the current, he added.

Twenty-seven migrants were rescued and nine bodies were recovered after the boat, which had set out from Nouadhibou in Mauritania, some 800 kilometres (nearly 500 miles) away, overturned off El Hierro.

The tragedy hit when rescuers arrived to assist the migrants after they themselves called emergency services, Spanish officials said.

Migrants rushed to one side of the precarious boat, causing it to tip.

The migrants "had gone two days without food or water", which may have fuelled their panic, Anselmo Pestana, head of the Canary Islands prefecture, told journalists in the port of La Estaca.

Spanish police arrested five people on Monday (Sep 23) for scamming two women of 325,000 euros ($361,261) by posing as Hollywood star Brad Pitt via online and WhatsApp messages.

The suspects made contact with the women via a fan page of the Oscar-winning actor and made them believe that “they had a sentimental relationship with him,” Spain’s Guardia Civil police said in a statement on Monday.

The members of the gang, posing as Pitt, allegedly encouraged the women to invest in various projects related to the Hollywood star that did not exist in real.

One woman, from the southern region of Andalusia, was defrauded of €175,000 ($195,000), while the other, from the northern Basque Country, lost €150,000 ($ 170,000).

“The cybercriminals, to capture the victims, had studied their social networks and made a psychological profile of them, thus discovering that both women were two vulnerable people, lacking in affection and in a state of depression,” police said.

The fraudsters also used instant messaging platforms like WhatsApp to exchange messages and emails with the two women until they reached a point where they believed they were chatting via WhatsApp with Brad Pitt himself, who promised them a romantic relationship and a future together.

The archaeologists stumbled upon the 26,000-year-old footprints of humans and animals after it was unearthed by the construction workers at the site which once was a unique settlement in the Ice Age.

The discovery was made during the construction of a housing development project in Madrid as the workers found footprints and stone artefacts dating back 26,000 years.

After this, the site was declared a BIC Asset of Cultural Interest and construction of the building was stopped to preserve history.

The archaeologists then began excavating the site in search of more relics. A team of 30 people, which included geologists, technicians, palaeontologists, and restorers, gathered and started working on the site.

Speaking to The Olive Press, project researcher Juan Sanguinos said that the archaeologists have been planning to ask the Madrid City Council to leave the place as an archaeological reserve for future investigation.

The ancient footprints were discovered by construction workers in the Mendez Alvaro district of Madrid which led to the excavation of the site.

In the excavation, one thing was clear that rhinoceros and herbivores had walked on this site 26,000 years ago.

After investigation, 26,000-year-old stone relics were also discovered by the archaeologists after which the site was identified as a Pleistocene settlement, which means from the Ice Age.

Upon survey of 2,000 square meters of area, it was also discovered that several rivers had merged in the paleosurface. Hence, animals and humans came to drink water here because of which their footprints were present here.

Excavation head Pilar Oñate, while speaking to The Olive Press, said that this site was not just a drinking well but also a “unique settlement.”

“Something like this was not known about in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula, but previously only on the Cantabrian coast and generally in cave areas and shelters, rather than being in the open air," he added.

In an inclusive society which includes dating apps and various social media platforms, it’s still hard to find someone to love. TikTok has brought a new trend connecting singles through a pineapple. The ‘upside-down pineapple’ trick has become viral in Spain.

Spanish youngsters have been going to supermarkets with curiosity to meet someone by placing a pineapple upside down in their shopping cart, subtly signalling that they are open for a love interest.

If you see an upside-down pineapple, it shows that the person is available and interested in being approached. If someone wants to approach a person, they will have to bump that person with a cart. If the other person feels the same, they will bump back, and they go to the wine aisle for a chit-chat.

Television star and humorist Vivy Lin played a significant role in making this a viral trend. She posted a video on TikTok where she was following the trend, pushing the shopping cart towards the wine section at a Mercadona store. “The time to hook up in Mercadona is 7 pm to 8 pm,” Lin said, as reported by BBC.

This sign gives a clear indication for potential suitors to engage in interesting conversation. It helps to avoid the usual awkwardness about approaching someone for the first time, which is almost a part of traditional dating culture.

This trend stands for breaking the traditional societal norms for indicating that you are open to being approached by a potential mate.

Aashmeen Munjaal, ontologist and mental health and relationship expert, said, “The digital mindset of expressing interest through subtle signs like likes, follows, etc., transfers into real-world scenarios, making indirect signals, like the upside-down pineapple, appealing for those hesitant about face-to-face approaches.”

According to Munjaal, the fear of being rejected plays an integral role in this trend’s popularity. “Indirect methods offer a buffer against the vulnerability of confrontation, allowing individuals to test the waters without risking personal embarrassment,” Munjaal said.

This method also provides an easier way to portray that you are interested, especially for those for whom communication is a difficult part. It’s a soft and subtle way to form a connection.

Spain were held by Serbia in the UEFA Nations League on Thursday in their first game since winning Euro 2024, while Cristiano Ronaldo reached another milestone by scoring his 900th career goal as Portugal beat Croatia. Eight of Spain's starting line-up in their Euro 2024 final victory over England almost two months ago were on the field at kick-off against Serbia in Belgrade.

Among them was Lamine Yamal, with the Barcelona prodigy just one of the Spain players to be denied by home goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic. Luis de la Fuente's team are also the reigning Nations League champions having won the most recent edition of the tournament last year.

They will now hope to register their first victory in League A, Group 4 when they travel to face Switzerland in Geneva on Sunday. The Swiss lost 2-0 to Denmark on Thursday, with Patrick Dorgu and captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg scoring late goals for the home side in Copenhagen.

Switzerland finished the match with nine men as both Nico Elvedi and Granit Xhaka were sent off in the second half. In Lisbon, Ronaldo's 900th career goal proved to be the winner as 2019 Nations League champions Portugal edged Croatia 2-1 in Group A1.

Ronaldo, 39, put behind him a disappointing Euro 2024 in which he failed to score as he turned in a Nuno Mendes cross in the 34th minute at the Estadio da Luz to reach the landmark. He appeared emotional as he celebrated the goal, his 131st in a Portugal shirt. Half of his goals were scored for Real Madrid, with the remainder spread across his spells at Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United and current club Al-Nassr.

Diogo Dalot's goal had put Portugal in front early on before Ronaldo netted, with a Dalot own-goal reducing the deficit before the break.

Brazilian striker Vinicius Junior has called for Spain to be stripped of its 2030 World Cup hosting duties unless it makes progress on the issue of racism in stadiums.

The Real Madrid star, who has repeatedly been the victim of racist abuse from opposition fans at La Liga matches, said during an interview broadcast on CNN on Tuesday that more needs to be done to change attitudes in Spanish society.

"Until 2030, there is a lot of room for improvement, so I hope that Spain can evolve and understand how serious it is to insult someone because of the colour of their skin," the 24-year-old striker said.

"If by 2030 things don't improve, I think we have to move the location because if a player doesn't feel comfortable and safe playing in a country where they can suffer racism, it's a bit difficult."

His comments caused an uproar in Spain, which will host the 2030 World Cup alongside Spain and Morocco, with three matches also taking place in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.

"Spain is in no way a racist country," Vinicius's Real Madrid teammate Dani Carvajal told a news conference on Wednesday, adding Spain "does not deserve to be deprived of the World Cup".

"I know what Vinicius has to put up with but La Liga is improving and protocols are being drawn up so that these people can no longer take part in sporting events," the defender said.

Spain national team coach Luis de la Fuente agreed with Carvajal.

"There are always undesirables but Spain is not racist, it is an example of coexistence and integration," he said.

Madrid's conservative mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida condemned Vinicius's comments, calling them "deeply unfair", and said he should apologise.

An underwater structure in the Mediterranean Sea is much older than earlier thought, a new study has revealed. The discovery has brought to the fore new highlights about the early human settlement of the Balearic Islands that comprises Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. It proves that humans were inhabiting the Spanish island nearly 6,000 years ago.

The latest study has been published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment. Researchers examined a 25-foot-long prehistoric "bridge" structure that sits inside the Genovesa Cave. Researchers analysed the mineral formations on the bridge and also studied the elevation of a distinctive colouration band along the bridge's upper portion.

Previous research had pegged the time of its construction to around 3,500-3,000 years ago. But now experts believe that it was built around 6,000 and 5,600 years ago. Notably, the rising sea waters have now flooded the passages of the cave.

Lead author of the study, Bogdan Onac of the University of South Florida, and his colleagues say that this shows that humans were living on the island much before than earlier thought.

"This provides evidence for early human presence on the island dating at least 5,600 and possibly beyond around 6,000 years ago," the authors wrote in the study.

When did humans reach the Spanish island?

As per current scientific consensus, the earliest human settlement on the island can be dated to around 4,400 years ago. Some research even said that humans were present there 9,000 years ago, but there has not been strong data to back the belief.

Scientists tracked the changes in sea level over hundreds of years by studying the mineral formations and the colouration band. This helped them to understand the time of the construction of the bridge.

"This research underscores the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in uncovering historical truths and advancing our understanding of human history," Onac said in the press release.

The limestone bridge was first discovered in 2000 during a scuba-diving expedition inside the flooded cave. Researchers found pottery fragments at the time inside the cave which helped them establish its time of construction. According to a statement from the university, bones from a now-extinct goat-antelope known as Myotragus balearicus were also found there.
