Spain’s World Cup 2030 chief resigns over venue fix allegations – Report

Content generated using artificial intelligence has raised growing concerns with the spread of misinformation and deepfakes. In a move to combat this, Spain&rsquo;s government unveiled a draft on Tuesday (Mar 25) aimed at criminalising the use of AI-generated sexually explicit videos and images of a person&rsquo;s face or body without their consent.
AI has proved that technology can be used for malicious purposes like creating deepfakes, which are realistic computer-generated images and videos based on real content.

According to a 2019 study by the Dutch AI company Sensity, about 96 per cent of deepfakes contain non-consensual pornography, most of which feature women.
<h2>&lsquo;Crimes against moral integrity&rsquo;</h2>
During a press conference following a cabinet meeting, Justice Minister Felix Bolanos said that the government wants &ldquo;deepfakes of a sexual or seriously insulting nature&rdquo; to be &ldquo;considered crimes against moral integrity.&rdquo;

A statement issued by the government said that the move would be a part of a bill aimed at &ldquo;protecting young girls and boys as well as adolescents&rdquo; from the dangers of &ldquo;digital technology&rdquo; and ensure their &ldquo;right to privacy&rdquo;.
In recent years, the country has seen several cases of the distribution of fake nude images of minor girls, which were created using AI.
In some cases, minors face blackmail by creators who demand money not to distribute their fake nude images.

The bill would also mandate smartphone and tablet manufacturers to include parental control systems, which would be activated by default. The restrictions on devices would force online influencers to use &ldquo;age verification systems&rdquo; for their subscribers.
Recently, Spain&rsquo;s government approved a bill imposing heavy fines on companies that do not label AI-generated content, classifying it as a &ldquo;serious offence&rdquo;.

Lamine Yamal scored a brilliant goal but also missed a penalty on another night of growth for Barcelona's teenage star as Spain reached the Nations League semi-finals.
The 17-year-old thrilled during the 3-3 draw against the Netherlands on Sunday at a sold-out Mestalla stadium in Valencia, even if he ended up with a bittersweet feeling as Bart Verbruggen denied him in the shoot-out.

Spain progressed 5-4 on penalties after a wildly entertaining 5-5 aggregate tie, another stepping stone on his journey to the top of the game.
A key player for Barcelona and already having won Euro 2024 with his country, a day after turning 17 last July, Yamal's incursions on the right flank draw spectators to their feet and comparisons to Argentina great Lionel Messi.
The loudest roar as the home team was read out by the Mestalla stadium announcer was reserved for his name, and "Yamal" was printed on the back of more than a fair share of the Spain shirts flooding through the gates.
The highlight of the night for many was Yamal's stunning extra-time strike, controlling Dean Huijsen's lofted pass with a deft flick, turning to eke out a yard of space and bending the ball past Verbruggen in the Netherlands goal.
It was the perfect riposte to criticism that appeared after a relatively quiet night in the 2-2 quarter-final first leg draw in Rotterdam last week.&nbsp;
"I see things that are starting to bother me a little... shorts a little lower, not making much of an effort," said former Netherlands international Rafael van der Vaart.
Yamal responded on the pitch, and then off it with a post on Instagram following the game.
"Shorts down, a goal, a missed penalty and into the semi-finals, come on Spain!" wrote Yamal on the social media platform, including a photo of Van der Vaart's face.
Yamal is not shy of firing back at his critics, as he showed with a jab at Adrien Rabiot during the Euros, after helping eliminate France by scoring a wondergoal.
Spain will face France again in the Nations League semi-finals as they bid to defend the title they won for the first time in 2023.
<h2>'What a disaster'</h2>
Yamal's Barcelona team-mate Pedri said the teenager would bounce back from his penalty miss, a surprisingly tame effort kept out by Verbruggen.
"I told him it was a terrible penalty," laughed Pedri, who netted Spain's winner from the spot after Donyell Malen missed for Netherlands.
"But no, you learn from these situations, he doesn't let the pressure affect him and you have to take a penalty to be able to miss it.
"How calm he is has always surprised us, it's like pressure doesn't exist for him when you see the way he dribbles so easily, and the way he plays.
"We have to take care of him and most of all, enjoy having him."
Yamal has four goals in 19 Spain appearances, but plays with the self-assurance of a superstar at their peak.
Defender Marc Cucurella also joked about Yamal's penalty miss -- with Spain players' willingness to laugh about it showing they believe the winger can take the jibes on the chin.
"I saw him go up to take it with confidence and I thought, he'll score here for sure," said the left-back.
"Then I saw how he hit it and I said 'What a disaster!'"
Penalties aside, Yamal, and Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams on the opposite flank, help make Spain a hugely exciting side to watch.
"We always want to attack, and attack a lot," said Spain coach Luis de la Fuente.
"That's why the fans have enjoyed this so much, the game was out of control in some moments, it's a spectacle to see."
The coach, who previously said Yamal had been 'touched by a magic wand', acknowledged the youngster is still growing.
"Lamine is disappointed (with the penalty) but he's happy," added De la Fuente.
"He gave us what we needed from him but he's still growing and maturing."

Aragon's top official, Jorge Azcon, said one woman had been airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries. Three others were also seriously injured.

Spain’s famous “El Gordo” Christmas lottery kicked off the holiday season with a massive prize pool worth 2.7 billion euros (around $2.8 billion) on Sunday (Dec 22). The first prize, known as "El Gordo," was awarded to ticket holders with the number 72480. Each winning ticket earned 400,000 euros (roughly $417,000) before taxes.
<h2>Winners across the country</h2>
The winning tickets were sold in Logrono, a city in northern Spain’s La Rioja region. The lottery is known for distributing smaller prizes to a wide range of winners, making it a national event that spreads joy across the country. Many Spaniards buy fractions of tickets, called “decimos,” and share them with family and friends.

<h2>A longstanding tradition</h2>
The draw took place in Madrid’s Teatro Real, where young students from the San Ildefonso school announced the winning numbers in a songlike cadence. The lottery, which dates back to 1812, has become a cherished tradition, with lines forming outside lottery offices for weeks leading up to the draw. This year, the event was broadcast live, with festive spectators attending in costumes.

<h2>A historical event</h2>
The Christmas lottery, first introduced in 1763, has evolved over the years from a charitable initiative to a national celebration.
<h2>Hope and excitement for many</h2>
For many, the fun of “El Gordo” is about more than just the chance to win big. María Ángeles, a teacher from Badajoz, travelled to Madrid with 14 family members to watch the event live. While no one in her group won much, she said the experience was all about hope. “The point of coming to see the lottery is the hope,” she said.

United States President-elect Donald Trump is once again gaining popularity among an army of clay figurines who have their pants and are shown defecating.&nbsp;

The figurines have been created by Spanish craftsmen as part of a tradition which is popular in the north-eastern Catalonia region of the country.

<h2>Why are 'pooper' figurines made in Spain?</h2>

Originally, the "caganer" (pooper) figures were designed as comical shepherds who remain hidden from visitors, however, the tradition has expanded and started including celebrities and world leaders who have enjoyed popularity.&nbsp;

Since the 18th century, the figurines have been sold in Catalonia around Christmas. The people place them in nativity scenes with the hope that they will bring a rich harvest and good luck.

The original caganer, which if translated from Catalan means “the fertiliser”, was the figurine of a man who wore a red and black hat along with a peasant costume and was shown performing his biological functions.

The people believed that his fertile deposits when will be mixed with the soil, would result in a rich harvest.

CEO of online store Caganer.com Sergi Alos said that the surge in sales of United States presidential candidates pooping is a reflection of the outcome of the presidential elections in the country.&nbsp;

"Trump has been massive, overwhelming, just like in the elections," Alos said.

Donald Trump's Christmas-themed 'pooper' figurine sees surge in demand in Spain

Spain's leftist government on Thursday approved a "paid climate leave" of up to four days for workers to avoid travelling during weather emergencies, a month after floods killed 230 people.

Several companies came under fire after the October 29 catastrophe for ordering employees to keep working despite a red alert issued by the national weather agency.

The firms said the authorities failed to inform them sufficiently and sent telephone alerts too late during the European country's deadliest floods in decades.

The new measure aims to "regulate in accordance with the climate emergency" so that "no worker must run risks", Labour Minister Yolanda Diaz told public broadcaster RTVE.&nbsp;

If emergency authorities raise the alarm about a risk, "the worker must refrain from going to work", said Diaz.

Employees can resort to a reduced working day beyond the four-day period, a mechanism that already exists for emergencies, the government said.

Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo warned the cost of extreme weather events could double by 2050 as the government confirmed 2.3 billion euros of fresh aid for flood victims.

Scientists say climate change driven by human activity is fuelling the increased length, frequency and ferocity of natural disasters.

Rafael Nadal's legendary tennis career ended on Tuesday after Spain were knocked out by the Netherlands in the Davis Cup Finals. Wion pays tribute to the 'King of Clay'.

Rafael Nadal Bids Emotional Farewell To Tennis

Spanish superstar Rafael Nadal is aiming to cap his emotional farewell from tennis with another Davis Cup triumph in Malaga next week. Nadal, 38, has battled injuries over the past few years and the extent to which he can compete for his country is unknown, but all eyes will be on the 22-time Grand Slam winner.

The veteran led Spain to victory in Madrid five years ago -- the last time they won the trophy and Nadal's fourth.

However, he admitted Saturday that his role in Malaga may be limited to doubles rather than singles.

"First off, we'll have to see how I feel in training and, if I really don't feel I have a chance to win the singles, I'll be the first to not want to play," Nadal said in comments to the Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET). "If I don't feel ready, I'll be the first to speak to the captain (David Ferrer). I've already told him on a few occasions not to make any decisions based on the fact that it's my last week as a professional tennis player."

French Open and Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz will be Spain's leading player and his presence offers Nadal a real chance of retiring on a high note.

"Probably one of the most special tournaments that I'm going to play. Last tournament of Rafa, I'll be able to be next to him in the last moments on a tennis court for him," said Alcaraz who played alongside Nadal in doubles at the Olympics in Paris this year.

"I think it's most important for Rafa, for his last tournament. I really want him to retire with a title. It's going to be really, really emotional and a really special tournament for me."

Representing Spain, Nadal won singles gold at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and triumphed in the doubles at Rio 2016 alongside Marc Lopez.

But former world number one Nadal's injury setbacks in the twilight of his career have seen his ranking slump to 155.

The last of his 92 career titles came with his 14th French Open and 22nd major at Roland Garros in 2022.

He hasn't played a competitive singles match since losing to Novak Djokovic at the Olympics in July while in 2023 he played just four times.

Many are hoping for Spain and Alcaraz to meet world number one Jannik Sinner's Italy, the defending champions, in the final, as the two young stars continue to build on a gripping rivalry.

Record 32-time champions the United States have selected a strong team spearheaded by US Open finalist Taylor Fritz and are also among the most likely contenders.

Nadal clashed with Alcaraz in Saudi Arabia at the "Six Kings Slam" exhibition in October, losing in straight sets, but they will be fighting for the same goal in Andalucia.

The start of the Billie Jean King Cup was delayed because of a weather alert in the Malaga region, in the wake of devastating floods in the east of Spain.

Alcaraz, ranked third in the world, said the flooding in Valencia increased his motivation to help his country triumph.

"I'm here to give my grain of sand because playing for Spain is the biggest thing that there is for me," he continued.

Tennis greats and stars from other sports are among those clamouring to watch Nadal's farewell, with career rivals Djokovic and Roger Federer among those expected to attend.

Spain face the Netherlands on Tuesday in the last eight, with the winner taking on Germany or Canada in the semi-finals.
