According to a Radio New Zealand investigation, t'moko tattoo-themed filters are widely available on social media platforms like Instagram and Snapchat.&nbsp;

T-moko is a taonga, or treasure, for the indigenous people of New Zealand and symbolises the wearer's Mori ancestry.&nbsp;

The filters have reignited discussions about how sacred cultural artefacts are handled on tech platforms and whether or not New Zealand should give them stronger legal safeguards.

At the time of publication, The Guardian saw at least ten of these user-made Instagram filters, all of which had names that featured "Mori" or "moko." Instagram's parent company, Meta, did not reply to a request for comment.&nbsp;

After a New Zealand-based writer expressed concerns from the Mori community about the tools, Snap, which owns Snapchat, informed the Guardian that it had deleted one such filter, called a Lens, off its platform along with a duplicate.

The feature has been launched at a time when social media companies have been criticised for their lack of protection for kids.

Following the leaked internal documents by a Facebook whistleblower that she said showed the app harmed some teens’ mental health and body image, Instagram also testified in a Senate hearing in December over children’s online safety.

According to Jeremy Voss, Snap's head of messaging products, “It strikes the right approach for enhancing safety and well-being, while still protecting autonomy and privacy.”&nbsp;

Instagram had also launched a similar feature that allowed parents to view what accounts their teens follow and how much time they spend on the app.

“Everything that you do is to add users, especially kids, and keep them on your apps for longer,” said Blumenthal, who leads the subcommittee of the Senate Commerce Committee holding the hearing.

The companies sent executives with political experience to answer the questions. TikTok was represented by Michael Beckerman, its head of public policy for the Americas who used to lead a top lobbying group for internet companies. She said that her company’s app focused on connecting people who already knew each other in real life, rather than feeding them a constant stream of content from strangers. She also stressed that Snapchat moderates the public content it promotes more heavily than other social media companies. Human moderators review content from publishers before promoting it in Discover, the public section of Snapchat that contains news and entertainment, Stout said. Content on Spotlight, Snap’s creator program that promotes videos from its users, is reviewed by artificial intelligence before being distributed, and reviewed by human moderators before it can be watched by more than 25 users, Stout added.

Beckerman said that TikTok was different from other platforms that focus more on direct communication between users. “It’s about uplifting, entertaining content,” he said. “People love it.”

He said that policymakers should look at the systems that verify whether users were old enough to use a product, suggesting that legislation should include language on age verification “across apps.”

“Access controls for our data is done by our US&nbsp;teams,” said Beckerman. “And as independent researchers, independent experts have pointed out, the data that TikTok has on the app is not of a national security importance and is of low sensitivity.”

Senators repeatedly tried to prod the companies to commit to more transparency for researchers to investigate the health and safety of their platforms as well as support for elements of potential privacy legislation.

With an alarming increase in the traffic for child pornorgraphy from India, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR)&nbsp;has issued a notice to social media platforms like Google, Twitter and WhatsApp highlighting its concern.

NCPCR started an independent investigation on&nbsp;Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), and based on the evidence procured from the investigation, the online platforms have been given till the end of April to respond back to the notice issued to them.

The report by India Child Protection Fund (ICPF) titled 'Child Sexual Abuse Material in India'. The research revealed demand of obscene content in over 100 cities in India, mainly&nbsp;New Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar and Indore' New Delhi topped the list. The overall demand for child pornography was an average of 5 million per month in 100 cities on the public web during December 2019, which has now alarmingly spiked.

"ICPF has warned that this indicates millions of paedophiles, child rapists and child pornography addicts have migrated online, making the Internet extremely unsafe for children. Without stringent action, this could result in a drastic rise in sexual crimes against children," said&nbsp;ICPF.

In the notice sent to Twitter India, NCPCR said, "It is seen that as per your standard terms and conditions, a person of 13 years and above is eligible to open an account on Twitter. If you are allowing children at the age of 13 to open an account, the commission is of the view that you can't allow the other users to publish, propagate pornographic material, links etc. on Twitter. Another concern of the commission is that the accessibility of the pornographic material to the children through these links on Twitter."

In a similar notice to Google India, NCPCR wrote, "It is noticed during inquiry that pornographic material is accessible through the apps available on Google Play Store. By mere downloading these apps from the platform the user can access such material. This is enabling accessibility of the children to such material. There is also possibility that the CSAM is also available on these apps making it much grave issue."

During the investigation, it was noticed that&nbsp;certain links are&nbsp;available to join 'encrypted WhatsApp groups' and the CSAM and pornographic material is easily present in these groups. These links were available on the internet, and anyone could join these encrypted WhatsApp groups and access CSAM content.

"The links to these groups were found to be propagated by various handles on Twitter. The commission is of the view that propagating links of these WhatsApp groups on Twitter handles is a serious matter,' NCPCR informed WhatsApp India in its notice.

According to the ICPF, there has been an increase in demand for phrases like 'child porn', 'sexy child', and 'teen sex videos', as noticed by online data monitoring websites.

Data from Pornhub also revealed&nbsp;that traffic from India has increased by 95 per cent between March 24 and March 26 2020, as compared to their average traffic, the ICPF claimed.

Addressing the media,&nbsp;Nivedita Ahuja, spokesperson for the ICPF said,&nbsp;"This is a blatant violation of the directions of the Honourable Supreme Court, and a violation of national policy. Pornographic websites are playing hide-and-seek with Indian law and judiciary by simply changing their website URLs."

With mom, dad and grandma signing up in increasing numbers, Facebook is losing younger users in the United States at a faster pace than previously estimated, researchers said Monday.

A report by eMarketer said Snapchat is drawing youths away from Facebook at a quicker clip than Facebook-owned Instagram.

Facebook is still growing in the US market, according to research firm, mainly due to increases in usage by older age groups.

The report is the latest to highlight Facebook&#39;s problem with attracting and keeping young people, who have long been a core user base for the world&#39;s biggest social network.

The research firm said it expected the first-ever decline in the 18-24 age group in the US, a drop of 5.8 per cent this year.

It also said that for the first time since its research began, less than half of the 12-17 age group in the United States would be on Facebook, with a 5.6 percent drop in that segment.&nbsp;

The under-12 age group meanwhile will see a decline of 9.3 percent this year, eMarketer said.

The same trend is expected to continue into 2019 and 2020, with declines in all segments of US users under 25, the report added.

Facebook will lose an estimated two million users under 25 this year, with Snapchat and Instagram the main beneficiaries.

The report said Snapchat will add 1.9 million users under 25 in 2018 and Instagram will add 1.6 million.

Snapchat, which is known for its disappearing messages, will continue to have more users aged 12 to 24 than Instagram, the researchers said.

But Snapchat could end up facing a similar problem as it seeks to increase its user base and reach all ages.

&quot;Snapchat could eventually experience more growth in older age groups, since it&#39;s redesigning its platform to be easier to use,&quot; eMarketer analyst Debra Aho Williamson said.&nbsp;

&quot;The question will be whether younger users will still find Snapchat cool if more of their parents and grandparents are on it. That&#39;s the predicament Facebook is in.&quot;

Facebook remains the most popular social network in the US market with an estimated 169.5 million users this year, according to eMarketer.

But faster-growing Instagram will be used by 104.7 million Americans and Snapchat will reach 86.5 million users, according to the forecast.

Last year, eMarketer predicted Facebook would see declines among some youths for the first time in its history.

In the&nbsp; Snapchat video, the classmate follows the Sikh boy, before suddenly hitting him and knocking him to the ground. He then repeatedly punches the victim, who tries to shield himself and crawl away.

His father is claiming that his son was targeted because he is of Indian descent

School officials have denied all these allegations of the attack as being religiously or racially motivated. The student who attacked the boy will be appropriately punished, said Chris Loftis, communications director for the Kent School District.&nbsp;
