A suspect in California was taken into custody for allegedly kidnapping four of a Sikh family, including an eight-month-baby, who are still missing.

The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Jesus Salgado, allegedly kidnapped the family at gunpoint on Monday in Merced County, around 200 km southeast of San Francisco.

He was declared a ‘person of interest’ by the police after he used the victims’ ATM card.

Naindeep Singh, the head of a local Sikh community organisation, said that the four family members were taken away from the gas station and convenience store they own, reports AP news agency.

The kidnapped&nbsp;family members include eight-month-old Aroohi Dheri and her parents -- 27-year-old mother Jasleen Kaur and 36-year-old father Jasdeep Singh -- and the baby’s uncle Amandeep Singh, 39.

On Tuesday, the man attempted to take his own life prior to “law enforcement involvement" and is currently in critical condition receiving medical attention, the Merced County Sheriff's Office said.

The cops were able to confirm the identity of the accused after analysing the surveillance photo from the ATM in Atwater, a city about 14 km north of Merced.

“The person is similar in appearance to the surveillance photo from the original kidnapping scene,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

According to the cops, the accused destroyed unspecified evidence in an attempt to cover his tracks.

In a statement, they said that firefighters on Monday found a pickup truck belonging to Amandeep Singh that was on fire.

The Merced Police Department officers then reached Amandeep Singh’s home where a family member tried to reach the couple.

After they were unable to reach their members, the Merced County Sheriff’s Office was called in.&nbsp;The motive of the murder is unknown so far, the sheriff office said.

"Investigators continue to follow up on all leads and are working diligently to find the family," the sheriff's office said.

"We continue to ask for the public’s help with any information that may assist us in locating the family’s whereabouts."

Two men from the minority Sikh community were shot down by unidentified assailants on early Sunday morning in Pakistan’s Peshawar city of&nbsp;Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

The Sikh men—identified as Ranjit Singh (42) and Kuljeet Singh (38)— were at their shops selling spices at Batta Tal Chowk in the Sarband area when two assailants arrived on a motorbike and opened fire.

Police have been dispatched to the site to take note of the matter. They are determining whether the deceased were victims of targeted killings.

Around 15,000 Sikhs live in Peshawar, mostly in the Jogan Shah neighbourhood of the provincial capital.

Most of the members of the Sikh community in Peshawar are involved in business, while some also run pharmacies.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mahmood Khan has strongly condemned the attack and directed the police to take immediate steps to arrest the culprits.

He termed the incident a conspiracy against disrupting the inter-faith harmony and said that justice will be provided to the families of the dead.

The Sikh religious body,&nbsp;Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), condemned the incident and asked the establishment to put the miscreants behind the bar.

"We strongly condemn cowardly murders of two Sikhs Kuljit Singh &amp; Ranjit Singh in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Govts of Pakistan &amp; India should ensure on priority, security &amp; safety of life &amp; property of minority Sikhs living in Pakistan. Pak govt should fulfill its responsibility diligently as such murders of minorities is matter of great concern for entire world especially the Sikhs, SGPC tweeted, quoting its president S&nbsp;Harjinder Singh.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also denounced the killing, saying, "Strongly condemn the killing of our Sikh citizens in Peshawar, KP. Pakistan belongs to all its people. Have ordered a high level inquiry to ascertain facts. The killers will be arrested &amp; meted out exemplary punishment. My most sincere sympathies to the bereaved families."

Meanwhile, the killings have sparked a wave of outrage across the border in India’s Punjab state, where several state leaders urged the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led central government to intervene in the matter.

Punjab Chief Minster Bhagwant Mann has also condemned the incident and urged foreign minister S Jaishankar to speak to Pakistan.&nbsp; &nbsp;

According to the police, Nirmal Singh suffered a broken nose and other bruises as a result of the unprovoked attack.

In his native Punjabi, Singh told ABC7 New York's Eyewitness News that he was hit from behind while out on his morning stroll in Richmond Hill, a business neighbourhood in New York City, on Sunday around 7 a.m.

The South Asian population in New York is upset, and the Indian diaspora in the area is frightened for their safety.

Japneet Singh, a community activist, feels the attack on Nirmal Singh was racially motivated.

In 2017, a 25-year-old Sikh cab driver in New York was assaulted and his turban knocked off by drunk passengers.

First Lieutenant Sukhbir Toor is the first person ever to have been granted permission to wear a turban by US Marines, a branch of US military which is absolutely strict about its dress code. Marines have been known to incorporate changes very late compared to other branches of US military.&nbsp;

First Lt. Toor got a permission to wear turban in daily dress at normal duty. But he cannot do so in conflict zone or while serving in a ceremonial unit. An he is not happy with it. He has made an appeal to Marine Corps Commandant.

Three girls from the Sikh community had gone missing after they eloped with Muslim men. One of the girls has been traced by Jammu and Kashmir police and handed over to the family.&nbsp;<o:p></o:p>

Alleged conversion snowballing into a controversy in Kashmir valley

Afghanistan Ambassador Farid Mamundzay expressed his gratitude for Sikh Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) which provided food material to Afghan refugees in New Delhi after a call from the ambassador. Afghanistan envoy to India thanks Sikh NGO for providing relief to Afghan refugees

The tragic mass shootout in Indianapolis has sent a shock through the US and even world. Eight people were killed in the shootout that took place on Thursday. Four of them belonged to the Sikh community in the US. The families of the deceased are expressing their anger, fear and anxiety in the aftermath of the mass shooting.

Jaswinder Singh, who lost his life in the shooting, was due to get his first paycheck at the facility this month and was working on the night shift to sort out the mail.

"He was a simple man. He used to pray and meditate a lot, and he did community service," said Harjap Singh Dhillon," a relative of Singh, in a New York Times report.

Amarjit Sekhon, another deceased in the incident who began working at FedEx about six months ago, leaves behind two teenage sons who are yet to come to terms with their mother's death.

Rimpi Girn, Sekhon's niece, said she is struggling to explain her loss of her younger son.

"We can't even think of what to tell him. All of a sudden last night his mom went to work, and she never came back today," she was quoted as saying in the report.

National embarrassment, says Joe Biden

US President Joe Biden called the Indianapolis mass shootout a "national embarrassment" on Saturday.

"It`s not always these mass shootings that are occurring -- every single day, there`s a mass shooting in the United States, if you count all those who are killed out on the streets of our cities and our rural areas," he said.

"It`s a national embarrassment and must come to an end."

Biden and Democratic Party in general, is known for its stance of more gun controls in the US. This is fiercely opposed by the Republican Party.

Chief Minister of Indian state of Punjab Amarinder Singh on Saturday expressed shock at the mass shootout.

"Shocked by the mass shooting incident at FedEx Ground facility in Indianapolis which took the lives of 8 people including 4 Sikhs. Pray for strength to their families in this hour of grief" he said.

Meanwhile, India's Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar offered all possible help to the families of the victims.

"Deeply shocked by the shooting incident at FedEx facility in Indianapolis. Victims include persons of Indian American Sikh community. Our Consulate (in Chicago) @IndiainChicago is in touch with the Mayor and local authorities in Indianapolis as well as the community leaders," he said in a tweet.

Indian-Canadian MP Ramesh Singh Sangha has hit out at few Sikhs MPs in the Canadian Parliament for protecting pro-Khalistanis, who are spewing venom against India and interfering in the country's internal affairs.&nbsp;

In his virtual speech in Parliament on Wednesday, Sangha said, "I am a proud Sikh by birth. Like Sikhs in Canada, I am not a Khalistani extremist or a sympathiser. However, there are few Sikhs in Canada as well as in this House (Parliament)."&nbsp;

While slamming the extremist elements, Sangha mentioned Canada's Intelligence Report 2018 in which 'Sikh (Khalistani) Extremism' was used initially. The Canadian MP also said, he and other members of the Sikh community were grateful as the government took away the word 'Sikh' from the report but it was shameful on part of some Sikh MPs and ministers that pressurised the government to remove the word 'Khalistan' from the report."&nbsp;

Furthermore, Sangha said that some Sikhs including MPs pressurised to remove the phrase 'Khalistani Extremism', thus compromising the security of Canada.&nbsp;

The 2018 Public Report on the 'Terrorist Threat to Canada' raised serious concerns over the grooming of pro-Khalistani outfits in Canada, who are also indulged in anti-India activities.&nbsp;

The report said, "Some individuals in Canada continue to support violent means to establish an independent state within India. These violent activities have fallen since their height during the 1982-1993 period when individuals and groups conducted numerous terrorist attacks. The 1985 Air India bombing, which killed 331 people, remains the deadliest terrorist plot ever launched in Canada".&nbsp;

"While attacks around the world in support of this movement have declined, support for the extreme ideologies of such groups remains. A team of UK researchers have developed a beard covering technique for the bearded medical workers of the Sikh community to ensure that the Sikh doctors and medical experts do not have to trim their beards while catering to the needs of the patients.

The new technique has been launched by a team&nbsp;led by Professor Gurch Randhawa from the University of Bedfordshire and Dr. Rajinder Pal Singh. The idea stuck the team after concerns of providing proper protective kit to the doctors of the minority community during the coronavirus pandemic.

This new innovation will allow Sikh doctors to wear a&nbsp;well-fitting respirator mask without having to shave off their beard — which the community doesn't trim due to religious reasons.

"Because shaving was a mandatory pre-requisite for wearing respirator masks, many members of the faith-observant bearded community, such as Sikh, Jewish and Muslim, have been affected and have had to face the dilemma of redeployment from frontline healthcare jobs involving exposure to COVID-19," Randhawa said.

Recalling two incidents where top officials have been declined various offers due to the need of wearing a respirator or&nbsp;gas-mask fitting mask, Randhawa said this innovation was long-time due. "In both of these scenarios, the common theme was that the beard was considered to be an impediment to the wearing of a respirator mask. The other common principle was the concern for the health and safety of the employee. There was no alternative choice, or maybe, it was unexplored," he said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Rajinder Pal Singh, who is based out of&nbsp;Manchester, also pitched the idea of having an under-mask beard cover, commonly known as 'thattha’, which can allow allow him to wear an FFP3 respirator mask. This innovative way of wearing an essential PPE for frontline medics of the minority communities was approved in the&nbsp;qualitative Fit Test by the UK's National Health Service (NHS).

Kamala Harris had then sworn in as California’s first Indian-American attorney general only three days before.

In the court filings, she backed the Department of Correction, saying that no exception to the rule had been made since the policy came into effect in 2004.

The case was again mentioned when Harris announced her intention to run for the post of the US President.

Kate Waters, spokeswoman for the Harris campaign back then, explained to the RNS in an email that Harris’s hands were tied.&nbsp;

The state eventually settled the case in 2011, six years after Oberoi had originally applied for the job. It paid Oberoi $295,000 in damages and gave him a manager position in the corrections department.&nbsp;

But no change was made to the no-beard policy.

The Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC) will celebrate the first anniversary of the inauguration of the historic Kartarpur Corridor on November 9, its chief Satwant Singh said on Thursday.

However, the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB), which manages religious properties and shrines of Hindus and Sikhs in Pakistan, has distanced itself from the PSGPC’s initiative, saying "it has not received any instructions to celebrate the first anniversary of the inauguration of the corridor so far."

The 4-km long corridor links Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Gurdaspur in India to Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib in Pakistan - the final resting place of Sikh faith’s founder Guru Nanak Dev.

"We have decided in principle to celebrate the first anniversary of the inauguration of the Kartarpur Corridor and for the purpose, we will invite some two to three ministers and other government functionaries," Singh told PTI.

When asked as to why the ETPB was not hosting this function along with the PSGPC, Singh said: "Since the construction of Kartarpur Corridor is a historic event, the Sikh body in Pakistan has decided in principle to celebrate its first inauguration anniversary. And so far the ETPB is concerned, we are inviting it and other government functionaries and ministers for the event."

He said that the PSGPC wanted to invite Sikhs from across the border but the Indian government had already declined the Pakistan government's offer to allow the pilgrims to visit the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib owing to COVID-19.

The corridor — which allows Indian pilgrims to undertake visa-free travel to the Kartarpur Sahib gurudwara — was closed on March 16 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

India has said a decision to re-open the Kartarpur corridor would be taken in accordance with the protocols relating to COVID-19 and easing of restrictions.

Singh further said that Sikhs from all parts of Pakistan would visit the corridor on November 9. "Some 500 to 1,000 locals visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib daily," he said.

Meanwhile, an official of the ETPB told PTI that no function in connection with the first anniversary of the inauguration of the corridor has been planned at the government level.

"The PSGPC is organizing a programme on its own," he said.

A Sikh man was kidnapped from the Paktia province in Eastern Afghanistan four days ago, confirmed the Afghan Sikh community living in the United States.

The man identified as Nidhan Singh from Tsamkani district in the Paktia province and was employed as a Gurusewak (helper) at the local Gurudwara.

After his abduction, the Afghan Sikh community living in the United States has again urged the Government of India to help in the resettlement of the Sikhs living in Afghanistan.

They have appealed to India to make special arrangements under Vande Bharat Mission for over 600 Sikhs.

"I have spoken to Sikh Member of Parliament Narinder Singh and he confirmed that officials in the Afghan Government have promised to help and find Nidhan," Paramjit Singh Bedi, Chairman of the Afghan Sikh community in New Jersey told ANI.

"Narinder Singh has also reached out to the Taliban leaders and has been assured that all efforts will be made to ensure his release," Mr Bedi further said.

Mr Bedi and other community members will send written appeals to former diplomat and Union Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, the External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and the Indian envoy to the United States Taranjit Singh Sandhu.

Worried for the lives of the Sikh minorities living in Kabul, Jalalabad and Ghazni, the Sikh community, has been constantly seeking support from India.

Encouraged by the steps taken in the past by the Indian government, leaders of the Afghan Sikh community leaders have made several appeals to India to accommodate the Sikhs and Hindus from Afghanistan and grant them legal entry with long term residency multiple entry visas.

The community leaders living in the United States said it is imperative to alleviate the dire situation of religious minorities in Afghanistan who look to India as the only safe haven in the region.

In May, expressing concerns over the safety and security of religious minorities in Afghanistan, twenty-six US Congressmen urged Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, to take all available steps to facilitate the "safe and expeditious relocation" of members of the Sikh and Hindu communities trapped in the war-hit country.

In the letter dated May 4, Congressman John Garamendi, co-chair of Sikh Caucus, and twenty-five others stated that the Sikh community continues to be under "grave" threat from Islamic State terrorist attacks directed at Sikhs.&nbsp;

Once a thriving community of nearly 250,000 people, the Sikh and Hindu community in Afghanistan has endured years of discrimination and violence from extremists, and the community is now estimated to comprise fewer than 100 families across the country, the letter said.
