Two men and a woman were killed before the shooter barricaded himself inside, reported the news agency AFP citing sources.

Police spokeswoman Konstantina Dimoglidou said the owner of European Product Carriers was among those killed. The gunman, the 76-year-old former employee was later found dead in another area of the building, said the police.&nbsp;

The alleged shooter “was the weapon of his unlawful act and he had probably shot himself,” said Dimoglidou. The police also found two women, unharmed, who had been locked in a bathroom during the attack.&nbsp;

“We were at our desks working, we heard shots,” an employee who did not identify herself told the Proto Thema. She also said that the gunman had told employees to leave.

The officials in Greece have cordoned off the area and said they were investigating the incident.

As per authorities, a 28-year-old man was found shot in Joliet Township, succumbing to his injuries at a hospital. Another man, aged 42, was discovered with a gunshot wound at a nearby Joliet address, with injuries deemed non-life-threatening.

As per the information reportedly shared by Will County Chief Deputy Dan Jungles, deputies had been monitoring one of the residences since Sunday (Jan 21) evening.

The police were anticipating the return of the suspect involved in the day's shootings. When the suspect failed to appear, deputies approached the door of one house but received no response.

They then proceeded to check the second house, which they knew had a connection to the first. There, the authorities discovered&nbsp;the first set of victims. Jungles stated that he had no information on the duration of time the victims had been deceased.&nbsp;Joliet Police, via a Facebook post, announced on Monday (Jan 22) afternoon about an ongoing investigation.

Soon, amid the kerfuffle, about 1,000 villagers descended near the suspect's home, forcing the PLA militants to secure an exit. However, during the escape, they started firing randomly at the crowd, resulting in&nbsp;four deaths and nearly two dozen injuries.&nbsp;

The family of the four men refused to take the bodies on Tuesday (Jan 2) whilst submitting a memorandum to the state government with a list of demands.

According to the police, three others were injured and taken to the hospital. One person suffered critical injuries, said Henderson, adding that others sustained injuries which were not considered life-threatening.&nbsp;

The suspect was identified as 48-year-old&nbsp;Jason J. Eaton.

Eaton lived in an apartment building near the site of the shooting.&nbsp;

He was&nbsp;detained around 3:30 pm (local time) on Sunday at the site of the attack, the&nbsp;Burlington Police Department said.

What do we know about the incident?

The incident took place on a street near the University of Vermont where the suspect, who was described as a “white man with a handgun,” without saying anything “discharged at least four rounds from the pistol" fled on foot, said the police.&nbsp;

But according to a pro-Palestinian NGO, the suspect was not silent.

The assailant opened fire after he began to shout at and harass the three men who were speaking Arabic, said the Institute for Middle East Understanding.

The police confirmed that two of the young men were wearing keffiyehs – the traditional black and white Palestinian scarf – when they were attacked.&nbsp;

The incident comes amid a rise in anti-Islamic and antisemitic incidents across the US since the beginning of the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza.&nbsp;

“In this charged moment, no one can look at this incident and not suspect that it may have been a hate-motivated crime,” said Burlington Police Chief Jon Murad, in a statement.&nbsp;

The local police chief said that they are already in touch with “federal investigatory and prosecutorial partners” to prepare for the next steps if the incident is proven to be a hate-motivated crime.&nbsp;

<h2>About the victims</h2>

The victims were identified by their families as Hisham Awartani, a student at Brown University in Rhode Island; Kinnan Abdel Hamid, a student at Haverford College in Pennsylvania; and Tahseen Ahmed, who attends Trinity College in Connecticut.&nbsp;

All three were graduates of the Ramallah Friends School, a private Quaker school in the occupied West Bank and were now attending universities in&nbsp; northeast US.&nbsp;

Two of the students were visiting the home of the third student’s family in Burlington for Thanksgiving.

“Two are stable, while one has sustained much more serious injuries,” said the police speaking about their condition.&nbsp;

The victims’ families issued a joint statement urging the authorities to investigate the shooting as a hate crime.&nbsp;

“As parents we are devastated by the horrific news that our children were targeted and shot,” said the victims’ families. It added, “We call on law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation.”

The advocacy group American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee also called for the incident to be investigated as a hate crime.&nbsp;

“The surge in anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian sentiment we are experiencing is unprecedented, and this is another example of that hate turning violent,” said ADC National Executive Director Abed Ayoub.&nbsp;

The White House said President Joe Biden had been briefed on the shooting.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders called the attack “shocking and deeply upsetting,” adding, “hate has no place here, or anywhere.”

According to government spokesman Olivier Veran, "What happened then was that law enforcement officers had no option but to open fire on this woman given the danger of the situation." The woman sustained a gunshot wound to her abdomen, and she was&nbsp;transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. She is in a critical condition as reported by AFP.&nbsp;

Paris Police Chief Laurent Nunez told AFP that the woman's identity remained unconfirmed but suggested that she might be the same individual who, in 2021, had made threats against urban patrols involved in the counter-terrorism Sentinelle operation.

At that time, she had been placed in a psychiatric ward due to mental health concerns. Reports also revealed that the woman had made threats of self-harm and potential explosive actions.

Despite the woman's threats, it was determined that she did not possess any explosives at the time of the shooting.&nbsp;

Television footage shows&nbsp;the post office suspect, thought to be in age group of 50 to 70, inside the building wearing a baseball cap, a white shirt under a dark coat, and seemingly carrying a gun fastened to a cord around his neck, reported AFP.

The local authorities of Warabi city reported, "At approximately 2:15 pm today (0515 GMT), a person took hostages and holed up at a post office in Chuo 5-chome area... The perpetrator is possessing what appears to be a gun." They urged citizens in proximity to the scene to comply with police directives and evacuate as instructed.

NTV, a local media outlet, stated that according to police sources, at least one woman in her 20s and another in her 30s were present within the post office. Negotiations between the police and the suspect were reportedly being conducted over the phone.

Previous reports from the Yomiuri daily suggested that roughly 10&nbsp;post office employees might be inside the building, with the possibility that the suspect might be carrying kerosene.

Police advised around 300 nearby residents to evacuate, according to TBS, a broadcasting company.
