Man strangulates wife in India's Hyderabad for refusing to have sex with him

In a divorce case, India's Allahabad High Court observed that if a spouse denies having sexual intercourse with their partner for a long period without any valid reason, then the act amounts to mental cruelty.

The court observed that the appellant Ravindra Pratap Yadav had alleged his wife Asha Devi "had no respect for marital bond, denied to discharge obligation of marital liability", which resulted in a "complete breakdown" of their marriage.

Yadav had filed a petition challenging the Varanasi family court's 2005 order which had dismissed his divorce plea, citing Section 13 Hindu Marriage Act, 1955.

The High Court had stated that a "hyper-technical approach" was adopted by the lower court and dismissed Yadav's case.

Couple granted divorce by Panchayat

The divorce case was filed by Ravindra Pratap Yadav on the ground that a mutually agreed divorce had already been finalised in the community Panchayat.

He had further alleged mental cruelty, "denying to co-habit and discharge the obligation of marital life" and added that the married couple was living separately for a good amount of time.

As per Yadav, the couple had married in May 1979 and the behaviour of his wife changed after some time and she was unwilling to cohabit with him.

Later, his wife started living at her parents' house. However, after six months of marriage, Yadav claimed that he made efforts to convince his wife and bring her back, however, she refused.

In July 1994, the village held a panchayat where the parties reached an agreement and mutually got divorced. The petitioner added that he was paying alimony of Rs 22,000 ($266) to his wife.

However, when Yadav demanded a decree of divorce based on mental cruelty, divorce agreement and desertion, his wife did not turn up in court.

“Undoubtedly, not allowing a spouse for a long time, to have sexual intercourse by his or her partner, without sufficient reason, itself amounts to mental cruelty to such spouse...Since there is no acceptable view in which a spouse can be compelled to resume life with the consort, nothing is given by trying to keep the parties tied forever to a marriage than that has ceased to in fact," stated Bench of Justices Suneet Kumar and Rajendra Kumar-IV said.

The bench referred to a 2006 Supreme Court judgment on the aspect of mental cruelty and found faults in the family court's order.

"It is evident from the record that since long, the parties to the marriage have been living separately, according to plaintiff-appellant, defendant-respondent had no respect for marital bond, denied discharging obligation of marital liability. There has been a complete breakdown of their marriage,” the bench added.

The US state of Missouri has become the latest to approve a ban on gender-affirming healthcare for transgender people. The GOP lawmakers also approved a bill wherein transgender girls and women will be banned from playing in female sports teams. The gender-affirming care ban is expected to take effect from August 28 under which transgender minors won't have access to puberty blockers, hormones or gender-affirming surgery. The restrictions will affect some adults, such as prisoners and inmates, who will be unable to avail of any gender-affirming care as Medicaid health care won't cover the procedure. As for banning transgender girls and women from sports, the measure would apply from kindergarten through college, both in public and private schools. If any educational institution goes against the mandate, they would lose state funding. Bills sent to the Republican governor Both the bills have been sent to Governor Mike Parson who is expected to sign them soon. The Republican leader was the one who pushed the GOP lawmakers to get the bill approved or else work beyond the normal end of their session. “When you have kids being surgically and or chemically altered for life for no good reason, yes, it’s time for the government to get involved,” said Republican Rep. Brad Hudson as the bill was approved on the House floor. The participants' medical records and stress level history were taken into account for the same.

Italy’s former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi was acquitted on Wednesday over allegations that he bribed witnesses in the notorious underage prostitution case, colloquially referred to as ‘Banga Banga’ parties.

It was alleged that Berlusconi bribed witnesses to lie in a previous trial in which he was charged with paying for sex in 2010 with then-17-year-old Moroccan nightclub dancer Karima el-Mahroug, who is also known by her stage name "Ruby the Heart Stealer."

Though initially found guilty, the former PM was acquitted in 2014 after an appeals court found no proof of the girl being a minor.

However, the judges suspected that the witnesses may have provided false testimonies, including Mahroug, after a clip of her bragging about sex with Berlusconi and describing orgiastic scenes at his parties came to the fore.

The 86-year-old had denied the allegations and said he is the victim of a years-long plot by magistrates to hound him from politics. He also insisted that these hedonistic parties were in fact elegant dinners.

The prosecutors had sought a six-year prison term for Berlusconi, whose Forza Italia party is a member of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's governing coalition.

"I can only express our utmost satisfaction for this unequivocal acquittal," Berlusconi's lawyer Federico Cecconi told reporters after the verdict.

Apart from Berlusconi, the other 28 co-defendants, many of them young women accused of accepting bribes, were also all acquitted, including Mahroug.

"I am so happy ... It's a liberation from years that were tough to say the least. It overwhelmed me when I was 17 and it carried on until I was 30. It was a nightmare," El Mahroug told reporters.

Italy’s ex-PM Silvio Berlusconi acquitted in ‘Banga Banga’ sex parties case

An interesting research which was published on Wednesday might have found out the reason why male Quolls, carnivorous marsupials native to Australia and New Guinea, generally do not survive after the first breeding season.

The research, though not conclusive, said that a sexual frenzy is a death sentence for male Quolls. The death of Quolls after the first breeding season for long puzzled researchers. They wondered for a long time why these Quolls were dropping dead.

The new research revealed that males are depriving themselves of rest in their relentless pursuit to mate with females. This restlessness during the breeding season and the mating frenzy could be the cause of the male deaths.

What did the research involve? To conduct the research, tiny backpacks with tracking devices were strapped to seven male and six female northern quolls on Groote Eylandt, an island off the coast of Australia's Northern Territory.

Data was fetched from the tracking devices and was analysed for further findings. The data which was collected for 42 days for both the breeding season and the non-breeding season showed that males were found to be far more active than females.

A military museum in Poland is requesting visitors to refrain from 'hands on' approach as they immerse their senses in some historical treat. In plain words, museum is asking visitors to not have sex on the premises. Ford Gerhard military museum has this amorous anomaly at hand. The visitors have been seen engaging in sexual acts on the premises and have also been caught in CCTV camera installed for security purposes.

Things appear so out of hand that the museum has had to make an appeal on social media

"Our guests are kindly requested… how can we put it… no ars amandi [the art of lovemaking] in the museum, please," the Coastal Defence Museum said on their Facebook page.

The post goes on: “We ask our amorous guests to be understanding – most of the exhibits in our museum are from many years ago and accustomed to entirely different moral norms – conservative, even orthodox, and abstemious. Let's not expose them to discomfort.”

“The museum has been equipped with cameras for some time, all footage is watched and you may not want that getting out to the general public.”

"Visitors to the fort have various temperaments, some of them very conservative. We don’t want them to be shocked during their visit by stumbling across a couple engaged in lustful antics," said Fort Gerharda museum director Piotr Piwowarczyk. He was quoted in local media.

According to him, there are many dark corners in the building where couples think they can't be seen. But unfortunately for them, security cameras are installed everywhere.

Museum urges visitors to keep their urges in check on premises

The LGBT community in Spain is fighting the monkeypox virus head-on and is doing so by abstaining from sexual activity, avoiding nightclubs, restricting their number of partners, and advocating for quick vaccine distribution. Antonio, a 35-year-old man from Madrid who would not provide his last name, said, “With this monkey thing, I prefer to be careful... I don't have sex anymore, I don't go to parties anymore, and that's until I'm vaccinated and have some immunity.”

As the number of incidents grew, Antonio, who frequently attended nightclubs and occasionally sex parties, made the decision to take action. Spain reported its second monkeypox-related death on Saturday. The only other comparable death outside of Africa occurred in Brazil. Since the beginning of May, more than 18,000 cases have been discovered worldwide outside of Africa, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Spain is one of the worst-affected nations. The emergency and alert coordination centre for the nation's health ministry estimated that 4,298 persons were affected.

The WHO has urged males who have intercourse with other men, the group now most afflicted by the virus, to limit their sexual partners as cases spread throughout the globe. One traveller promised to stay away from "risky circumstances" before his international vacation.

He feels that not enough has been done by the authorities. NGOs have criticised lack of vaccinations and prophylactic measures, and stigmatisation associated with the illness. This is true even though the WHO has deemed the outbreak of monkeypox a global health emergency. A high fever, swollen lymph nodes, and rashes resembling chicken pox are among the early warning signs of the infection. Usually taking two to three weeks, the illness will go away on its own.

Antonio, a 35-year-old man from Madrid who would not provide his last name, said, “With this monkey thing, I prefer to be careful... I don't have sex anymore, I don't go to parties anymore, and that's until I'm vaccinated and have some immunity.” As the number of incidents grew, Antonio, who frequently attended nightclubs and occasionally sex parties, made the decision to take action. Concerns concerning sexual behaviour have arisen since the World Health Organization proclaimed monkeypox a worldwide health emergency. This is because the virus can transmit by any type of close contact, including kissing, caressing, oral, penetrative vaginal, or anal intercourse with a person who has the infection. According to the WHO, rashes, body fluids (pus, or blood from skin lesions), and scabs are extremely contagious. Because the virus can be transmitted by saliva, ulcers, lesions, or sores may also be contagious. Contact with items like eating utensils or items like clothing, bedding, or towels that have been in contact with the infected individual could also be a cause of infection.

There were worries about whether the physically transmitted disease could disrupt sexual lives given that the virus is transmitted through personal contact. While they are experiencing symptoms, those who have the condition are infectious (usually within the first two to four weeks). It is unclear whether or not asymptomatic individuals can spread the illness.

According to Dr Dhiren Gupta, Senior Consultant and Intensivist at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, sexual contact increases the spread of monkeypox. The genitalia (penis, testicles, labia, and vagina) or anus (butthole) of a person with monkeypox may be touched during intimate contact, including oral, anal, and vaginal sex. According to Dr Gupta, prolonged face-to-face contact, kissing, hugging, and massages can all result in the virus being contracted.

Additionally, a person can get the illness via touching bedding, towels, and sex toys that have been used by a person who has monkeypox and have not been cleaned. Your risk of contracting monkeypox may increase if you engage in frequent or anonymous intercourse. According to the expert, limiting your sex partners may lessen your risk of exposure. Science is attempting to comprehend whether the virus might be present in body fluids such as vaginal or semen.

Monkeypox spreads by close intimate contact during sex, according to Dr Manoj Sharma of Fortis Hospital Vasant Kunj, Director, Senior Consultant Internal Medicine. It can be transmitted by anal, vaginal, and oral sex as well as by touching the infected person's genitalia.

Would using a condom help?

“It can spread by hugging, kissing or coming in contact with bedding, clothes or objects used by an infected person so barrier methods like using a condom may not be effective,” Dr Sharma added.

As reported by ANI, Dr Deepali Bhardwaj, Senior Dermatologist said, “Monkeypox can spread by sex, the touch of all sorts hence strict isolation is the key. It’s time to be cautious again and more hygienic of course. It’s the duty of us citizens to ensure that the system collapse and a similar situation doesn’t arise. Strict mask, hand hygiene, social distancing must be maintained and in early symptoms reach out to a doctor as soon as possible should be done besides enhancing immunity in general.”

How can stigma related to same-sex behaviour during the outbreak be avoided?

The WHO has made it clear that messages stigmatising particular categories of individuals in relation to this outbreak are inappropriate. Regardless of who they are, what they do, who they choose to have sex with, or any other circumstance, everyone who has close physical contact of any type with someone who has monkeypox is in danger. The WHO emphasises that it is forbidden to stigmatise anyone due to an illness. Anyone who has contracted the disease or is providing care for someone who is ill should receive assistance; stigma will probably just make matters worse and impede attempts to stop the outbreak.

The rashes can also resemble several sexually transmitted diseases, such as herpes and syphilis, according to a WHO report. This may help to explain why a number of the cases in the current outbreak have been found in males visiting sexual health clinics for treatment. Guys who have intercourse with other men or those who are sexually active are not the only ones at risk of contracting the disease. Anyone at risk is someone who comes into close physical touch with a contagious person.

Can Monkeypox spread through sex? Would using a condom help? Experts disclose

A 66-year-old man in Ireland suffered amnesia 10 minutes after having sex with his wife. According to a case report published in the Official Journal of the Irish Medical Organisation on Wednesday, the sex triggered short-term amnesia, temporarily wiping his memory of the previous day and making him unable to retain new information. The doctors are calling it the “Transient Global Amnesia (TGA)” which, according to the Mayo Clinic, has been defined as “a sudden, temporary episode of memory loss that can't be attributed to a more common neurological condition, such as epilepsy or stroke.”

The doctors said that after the intercourse, the man “became distressed” when he noticed the date on his phone and thought that “he had forgotten about his wedding anniversary”. However, in fact, he had celebrated it with his wife and family the day earlier, but was unable to recall those events.

The memory loss lasted for an hour, with the man “repetitively questioning his wife and daughter over the events of that morning and the previous day,” according to the journal.

He later visited an emergency room and had a completely normal neurological examination.

The doctors called it a rare condition which usually affects those between the ages of 50 and 70.

It is said that some people who experience TGA may fail to remember things that happened up to a year prior. Sufferers usually regain their memory within a few hours.

In this case, the affected man’s long-term memory remained intact, and he was able to state his name, age and other basic biographical details.

However, this is not the first time that this man couldn’t recall his prior days. In 2015, he again experienced TGA with that episode also occurring shortly after sexual intercourse. He later regained his short-term memory.

The authors of the Irish Medical Journal article — who work in the Department of Neurology at University Hospital Limerick — said that up to 10 per cent of people who suffer TGA will suffer a subsequent episode.

A bill has been passed in the lower house of Spain's parliament on Thursday to qualify all kinds of non-consensual sex as rape. The move has come over social outrage after the Wolf Pack case triggered momentum to the women's rights movement in the country.

This f-word is definitely not a taboo. We flirt consciously or otherwise and the eternal game goes on. Some of the best literature can be (rather unceremoniously) summed up as flirting gone on for some 500 pages.

When we witness someone interesting, our eyes talk, words are measured (or not depending on the perceived preference), our body language changes.

So it's a bit of a buzzkill when we don't get the number.

What went wrong? We can ponder this for years if we choose to.

But this scientific study might help you. Researchers from US and Norway worked together on this (professionally) to know which flirtation technique works best.

So 415 men and women in Norway and 577 in the US were given questionnaires. They were asked about what they found attractive in the opposite sex.

It was found that for men, flirtation tactics which indicated generosity and commitment worked best. Indications of willingness to have intimate conversations and spending time together worked best. It was found that reining in urge to have sex worked well for men.

For women, somewhat opposite was found to be effective. While what they dressed played a part, a friendly touch during conversation was found to be effective as well.

But one thing that beat most other factors in terms of attractiveness. Both, men and women rated humour and ability to crack a joke high on the scale of attractiveness.

Want to know best ways of flirting? This scientific study might help

India, often called the land of Kama Sutra, is often shy to talk about sex publicly. The topic is often a big no-no in families.

The situation may not be better in case of married couples who may suffer because of lack of communication and privacy.

Some 'sex start-ups' are trying to shatter the walls of silence around the topic often considered taboo in the largely conservative country.

MyMuse, founded by Anushka and Sahil Gupta, are tackling this with tongue-in-cheek marketing and creative euphemisms, which they say make the products (adult toys) seem less intimidating and encourage first-time buyers.

"Diwali is coming and so should you! And as always, we're urging you to save the fireworks for the bedroom," exclaimed one such advertisement on Facebook before one of India's biggest religious holidays, and its customary pyrotechnics, last year.

"There's this shame, guilt and fear associated with buying something that should be used in your intimate areas, and that's the first thing we wanted to turn around," Anushka says.

MyMuse is one of a growing number of businesses riding a wave of sexual liberation amongst urban young professionals, already navigating global trends on Instagram and comfortable with dating apps such as Tinder, Bumble and Hinge.

Investors too are betting on this untapped market in the vast country of 1.4 billion: India's nascent sex toys sector was valued at $91 million by TechSci Research in 2020, and predicted to grow 16 percent annually.

There are a growing number of services for India's sexually curious: fellow start-up Gizmoswala offers same-day delivery on bondage kits for Mumbai residents, while LoveTreats exhorts online shoppers to discover their "naughty side" with lingerie sets and remote-controlled vibrators

US Secret Service has released a report which says that men who identify as 'involuntary celibates' or 'incels' due to inability to form meaningful relationships with women constitute a rising threat to society.

The report, prepared by National Threat Assessment Center (NTAC) was released on Tuesday. It also dwells on some common themes found in the history of men who resorted to violence against women.

A case study included a 2018 shooting at a Yoga class in Florida. 40-year-old gunman Scott Paul Beierle killed two women and wounded six. The report says that Beirle had a history of inappropriate behaviour towards girls and women.

“During his teen years, the attacker was accused of stalking his classmates and he wrote stories that centered around violent themes," siad Steve Driscoll, a lead research specialist at NTAC. He has been quoted by CBS.

Driscoll says that one of the stories written by Beierle went on for 81 pages. The story has the protagonist killing several girls before committing suicide. The female characters bore resemblance to Beierle's actual classmates.

The man was even arrested previously for groping women.

The report by US secret service said that though Beierle did not resort to any extremist ideology, his behaviour resembled those who identified as 'incels' or 'anti-feminist'.

Hundreds of victims of GirlsDoPorn and GirlsDoToy, sex-trafficking rings, have now been given the rights to the videos and millions of dollars in damages. Over 400 victims can now demand the footage to now be removed.

GirlsDoPorn producer Ruben Andre Garcia has been accused of pressurising these girls into sex acts. The producer who also went by Jonathan lied about the actual nature of the shoot.

Most of these women were enticed to hotel rooms in San Diego through modelling shoot ads posted by Girls Do Porn. They were then pressurised into having sex.

The girls were told that the video will not go online. Garcia told these women that the videos would be published only on DVDs and sold overseas. However, the operators of Girls Do Porn posted them for free on websites including Pornhub, causing extreme trauma to the victims. In some cases, these girls were forced to change their communities or even change their names after their families came to know about it.

It was in June 2020 when Garcia was sentenced to 20 years in prison after he plead guilty to federal counts of sex trafficking by force, fraud, and coercion.

Southern California district acting US attorney Randy Grossman deemed this as an "extremely important ruling."

"We hope this helps the victims close a difficult chapter in their lives," he said.

Southern California district acting US attorney Randy Grossman deemed this as an "extremely important ruling." "We hope this helps the victims close a difficult chapter in their lives," he said. Four university lecturers in Morocco on Tuesday appeared in court facing allegations of trading good grades for sexual favours.

A fifth lecturer faces more serious charges of indecent assault and battery. The lecturer is due to appear before a judge on Wednesday.

The scandal erupted in September, when Moroccan media picked up social media leaks of messages purportedly exchanged between the lecturers and students.

Four of the accused, all of whom teach at Hassan I University in Settat near Casablanca, face charges of "incitement to debauchery", gender discrimination and violence against women, said AFP citing source.

As per Moroccan media, the trial was adjourned till December 14.

Three of the defendants are in detention.

In recent years a string of high-profile sexual harassment scandals have shaken Moroccan universities, but most have not resulted in trials, let alone convictions.

Rights groups say sexual violence is widespread in Morocco but that pressures from a conservative society mean women are reluctant to report sexual violence for fear of reprisals or damage to their family reputation.

In 2018, after years of heated debates, the law was changed to allow perpetrators of "harassment, aggression, sexual exploitation or ill-treatment" to be punished with prison terms.

But some argue that the law still fails to protect women from widespread sexual violence.

'Sex for good marks' cases bring Moroccan lecturers in court

While British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell is on trial for her alleged role in the sex abuse of underage girls, a few key pieces of evidence in the Maxwell trial were seized from Jeffrey Epstein's Palm Beach estate, carried into the courtroom and shown to jurors for the first time on Friday. These were then briefly examined by a police officer.

The shreds of evidence included a massage table and a “Twin Torpedo” sex toy.

Maxwell has pleaded not guilty to sex trafficking and other crimes, which involved recruiting and grooming girls for Epstein to abuse.

Jeffrey Parkinson, a retired police officer involved in the 2005 search was one of those who testified on the fifth day of Maxwell's trial.

A box labelled as "Twin Torpedos" was also shown. As per Parkinson's colleague, Michael Dawson, it contained sex toys taken from an upstairs closet.

"We were looking for massage tables, we were looking for massage oils, we were looking for sex toys, we were looking for correspondence," Dawson testified.

Ghislaine Noelle Marion Maxwell, a British socialite and the daughter of a publishing tycoon Robert Maxwell, moved to the US after her father died. She slowly became close to Epstein and was often spotted everywhere with him.

She, reportedly, had a romantic relationship with Epstein in the 1990s.

However, her relationship with the convicted sex offender became unclear later in the coming time.

She was soon labelled as the "lady of the house" or Epstein's "aggressive assistant" after she started getting involved in his daily activities, including sex trafficking.

Her close relationship with Epstein resulted in her being convicted for soliciting a minor for prostitution. She was sentenced to an 18-month jail term, of which she only served 13 months.

She was then arrested again in 2020 for charges of enticement of minors, sex trafficking of children, and perjury. She has also been denied bail as she was deemed a flight risk.

Spain’s former king Juan Carlos was allegedly “injected with female hormones by Spanish secret service to control his rampant sex drive”, an ex-police chief has sensationally claimed.

Jose Manuel Villarejo, an ex-police commissioner currently on trial over blackmail allegations, told a parliamentary hearing on Wednesday that Spain’s National Intelligence Centre (CNI) had to administer the 83-year-old exiled monarch “female hormones and testosterone inhibitors to lower his libido.”

Giving reasons for the extreme action, Villarejo said Carlos’ sex drive was considered as “a problem for the state” because he was such an “ardently passionate person,” Spanish media reported.

During the hearing, the former police chief said he had been tasked to recover medical reports relating to scans that Juan Carlos had while he was undergoing treatment for a benign tumour.

He said, “There were traces not of bromide (a sedative) but of testosterone inhibitors.”

The revelations come after a Spanish author and military historian Amadeo Martinez Ingles wrote a book entitled ‘Juan Carlos: The King Of 5,000 Lovers’, detailing evidence of his sexual history and describing the king as a "rampant sex addict".

It has been speculated that the former king has had intimate relations with over 5,000 women, including Danish-German philanthropist Corinna Larsen, Spanish singer Sara Montiel, Belgian governess Liliane Sartiau and Italian princess Maria Gabriela de Saboya, besides his wife, Queen Sofia.

Spain’s former king Juan Carlos ‘injected with female hormones’ to control his sex drive: Ex-cop

In October 2019, a prison officer who worked at a juvenile detention center in Central Texas was charged with sexual assault and accused of forcing a boy in custody to perform oral sex on him in his cell. The incident came to light the day after the alleged crime, when the boy tried to kill himself.

Two months before that, at another detention facility in Texas, a corrections officer was fired after a teenage girl said she was pregnant with his child. He was later charged in connection with that case. And in May of last year, another prison worker was arrested on charges that he had carried on a relationship with a teenager who was on parole.

At five state juvenile detention centers, the day-to-day conditions are relentlessly violent and oppressive, with guards often resorting to force, according to a complaint filed to the Justice Department. In 2019, prison staff used force against incarcerated children almost 7,000 times equivalent to six times per child who was confined that year.

Over the years, nearly a dozen staff members have been arrested on charges of sexual abuse against juveniles, and complaints about mayhem inside the facilities gang wars, fights and suicide attempts — are common. Now the Justice Department has begun a wide-ranging investigation into the detention centers, part of a broader effort to overhaul the country’s most troubled prisons.

Taken together, the voluminous allegations by advocacy groups and families, lawsuits filed against the state, news media reports, and investigations at the state level present a portrait of a terrifying environment inside juvenile prisons in Texas, one that is rife with sexual abuse, violence and severe staffing shortages.

Also read | As schools shift back to classroom teaching, are students ready to be reintroduced to outer world?

The Justice Department’s investigation comes almost a year after two Texas advocacy groups — Disability Rights Texas and Texas Appleseed filed a complaint urging the federal government to intervene. The organisations have been working together since 2007 to push for reforms of the state’s juvenile justice system.

That document amounted to a devastating compilation of abuses, despite close attention by Gov. Greg Abbott, who ousted the head of the juvenile justice system in 2017 after an investigation by The Dallas Morning News revealed a litany of degradations, including staff members distributing pornography and paying children money and drugs to fight one another.

In a statement, Camille Cain, the executive director of the Texas Juvenile Justice Department, which oversees one of the nation’s largest networks of youth correctional facilities, said her office intended to cooperate fully with investigators. “We all share the same goals for the youth in our care: providing for their safety, their effective rehabilitation, and the best chance for them to lead productive, fulfilling lives,” she said.

Despite reforms that began in 2007, with the closure of some facilities and a push to expand probation and reduce the number of children locked away, the groups found that violence and sexual abuse persisted within the five facilities that remain open and are now under investigation.

The problems, according to the complaint, have been exacerbated by severe staffing shortages, in part because of officers calling in sick during the coronavirus pandemic. This has led to a lack of supervision, the complaint said, which has allowed violence among the incarcerated children to flourish, as well as violence between staff members and the youths. On any given day, there are between 800 and 900 children in the state’s juvenile centers.

“The high staff turnover and lack of staffing in general both lead to a lack of programming and supervision, with kids often on lockdown in their dorms, which in turn leads to unrest and acting out by kids,” the complaint says.

Staff members have responded with beatings and pepper spray, the complaint explained, behavior that has created “a generally unsafe environment where rehabilitation, the primary goal of the juvenile justice system, is nearly impossible.”

Christie Dennis said her son was 15 when he entered one of the facilities at the center of the investigation, the McLennan County State Juvenile Correctional Facility in Mart, Texas.

Also read | Tour of the neighbouring galaxy: NASA shares stunning video of the Andromeda

Dennis was horrified when she called one day in 2019 and learned that her son had been beaten and taunted as guards apparently stood by, she said. Her son was sent to the jail’s doctors on one occasion, she said, and she was later told that many guards did not intervene because they were afraid of the youths themselves.

“I was wondering, where are the guards? They didn’t have enough staff to handle the chaos,” Dennis said. “He was actually scared,” she said of her son.

Dennis said her son ended up at the center after taking her car without permission several times and money from her purse. After talking to the authorities, she was advised that if she “wanted to teach her son a lesson,” he needed to go to a juvenile facility, Dennis said, a decision she ended up regretting.

The attacks against her son escalated to the point where he begged guards to keep him in solitary confinement, Dennis said. Released in July 2020, months before his 17th birthday, he now works at a fast-food restaurant and is earning his general equivalency diploma with plans to pursue welding. But he is not the same as he was before his detention, she said. “He has PTSD,” she said. “He hears a noise and he panics.”

Her son’s experience was included in the complaint filed to the Justice Department. In the complaint, he was identified by the initials “M.C.” and described an environment in which “gangs ran the facility” and put out “hits” on children. Food was frequently stolen, he said, and staffing was so limited that officers resorted to the use of pepper spray to pacify groups of children who were fighting.

Sometimes parents were not notified when their children were transported to other facilities. A seasoned volunteer at Gainesville State School who did not want her name used because she was not authorised to speak publicly about an open investigation, said she witnessed instances in which mothers showed up to see their children only to learn they were no longer there. After nine years, she was let go in 2019 after she reported one such case, she said.

In announcing the investigation, Kristen Clarke, who leads the Civil Rights Division at the Justice Department, said the federal inquiry would examine the state’s use of isolation and chemicals like pepper spray, plus the allegations of physical violence, sexual abuse and mistreatment of children.

Three years ago, the Justice Department found that children in Texas detention centers suffered much higher rates of sexual victimisation than in other states. The department found that while 7% of youth in juvenile facilities across the country had reported being the victim of sexual abuse, complaints at three Texas facilities were significantly higher. For example, 14% of children at a detention center in Brownwood, Texas, were reportedly victims of sexual violence. At two other prisons, the rate was higher, with 1 in 6 children said to have been abused.

In one egregious case, in August 2019, a corrections officer was charged with having sex with a girl who was housed in the Ron Jackson State Juvenile Correctional Complex in Brownwood. The victim reportedly became pregnant, and the officer was later charged with sexual abuse and possession of child pornography. Last year, another staff member at the complex, a woman whose title was “youth development coach,” was accused of sexual misconduct with a child in custody.

The announcement of the Justice Department investigation was praised by advocates for criminal justice reform, families of those confined and former inmates as a move that could bring relief and better conditions to people held in the centers.

Staff members have responded with beatings and pepper spray, the complaint explained, behavior that has created “a generally unsafe environment where rehabilitation, the primary goal of the juvenile justice system, is nearly impossible.” Christie Dennis said her son was 15 when he entered one of the facilities at the center of the investigation, the McLennan County State Juvenile Correctional Facility in Mart, Texas. Also read | Tour of the neighbouring galaxy: NASA shares stunning video of the Andromeda Dennis was horrified when she called one day in 2019 and learned that her son had been beaten and taunted as guards apparently stood by, she said. “He hears a noise and he panics.” Her son’s experience was included in the complaint filed to the Justice Department. Suspected sex cult Nxivm's co-founder Nancy Salzman has been handed a three-year prison sentence for her role in the cult. As per investigators, Nxivm was a sex-trafficking operation but it was disguised as mentoring group.

In 2019, Salzman pleaded guilty to racketeering offences. Keith Raniere, the spiritual leader of the group was sentenced to 120 years in prison in October 2020.

Raniere's cult was based in Albany north of New York City.

Followers signed up for $5,000, five-day self-help courses, but some were then financially and sexually exploited and had to follow a restrictive diet as Raniere -- known as "Vanguard" -- exerted his control, the jury at his trial in 2019 was told.

In 2015, he established a faction within the group called DOS, a pyramid structure in which the women were "slaves" and "Grand Master" Raniere sat at the top.

Nacny Salzman was quoted in news reports as saying that Raniere was "narcissistic sociopath"

Despite her criticism of Raniere, Federal judge said that Salzman left "trauma and destruction" for the victims of the sex cult.

Earlier, in 2019, Gates told The Wall Street Journal that he had met Epstein, but “didn’t have any business relationship or friendship with him”.

“Gates regrets ever meeting with Epstein and recognises it was an error in judgment to do so,” The New York Times had also quoted a spokesperson for Gates as saying.

Epstein, who had pleaded guilty in two-state prostitution charges and had registered as a sex offender, hanged himself in 2019 awaiting a sex trafficking trial.

At 21, Brazil’s Gabriel Jesus may be apprehensive about next month’s World Cup -- but legendary striker Romario wants him to know the key to success is simple: concentration, goals and plenty of sex.

He says that’s how he helped Brazil clinch the 1994 World Cup -- and it seemed to work. During the tournament in the United States, Romario netted five goals and won player of the tournament, before bagging FIFA’s World Player of the Year the same year.

“Have enough sex is one piece of advice, as is making the most you can of your days off and, of course, concentrate on match days and during the games,” the player-turned-senator told Lance! Wednesday.

Romario’s record is a tough act to follow -- but the renowned striker sees potential in Manchester City’s Jesus.

“I believe he’s quite aware of his football and what it represents for the Brazilian team. He has to arrive at the World Cup and score a goal. That’s the most important thing!” he said.

A football superstar known for his sense of fun, Romario is Brazil’s fourth-highest goal-scorer - still two goals ahead of Neymar.

Although he only appeared in two World Cups - and played just half a game in 1990 - Romario was star of the show in the United States, where Brazil scooped their fourth world title after a 24-year drought.

“The World Cup is a totally different competition from the rest, in which you have been 100 percent focused and push all your problems aside, otherwise you aren’t going to have the best Cup possible,” he reflected.

At 52, Romario has now swapped football for politics, winning a seat in Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies in 2010. A senator since 2015, in March he announced plans to run for governor of Rio de Janeiro state.

Sex, concentration and goals key to World Cup glory: Romario tells Jesus

In a new study revealed Monday, researchers discovered that the good old pain medicine Ibuprofen might not be so good after all for your health.

Men who take high doses of the tablet over a period of months now may face an increased risk of a number of health problems including fertility issues, erectile dysfunction, fatigue and muscle loss. While there are a couple of fallouts of using the medicine for a long period, the biggest threat to a man's body is that of it affecting the reproductive health.

Doctors in Copenhagen studied 31 healthy men between the ages of 18 and 35 who took 600mg of ibuprofen twice daily. After using the medication for around two weeks, they developed a condition called compensated hypogonadism.

The researchers said that ibuprofen lowered the men’s natural level of testosterone and that the pituitary gland had to kick up production of another hormone to increase testosterone. The condition resulted from the pituitary gland being overworked. The condition is normally seen only in older men and smokers, according to a leading UK publication.

As per the study, Ibuprofen affected the production of hormones such as testosterone.

According to the doctors-in-charge of the study, their condition was mild and temporary, however, it could become adverse if used for longer periods.

David Møbjerg Kristensen, one of the study’s authors, said, “Our immediate concern is for the fertility of men who use these drugs for a long time. These compounds are good painkillers, but a certain amount of people in society use them without thinking of them as proper medicines."

He added, “In the living body the pituitary gland kicks in to compensate for this, but the brain is pushing more to get the same amount of testosterone,” said Kristensen. “If you go on and stress the pituitary gland over the long term, this state could become permanent and you develop a more serious condition.”

The research was published online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
