Scotland's First Minister announces resignation, uncertainty over new Scottish leader

The search for Scotland's new First Minister has started after the surprise decision of Nicola Sturgeon to stand down. The announcement was made by the SNP leader on Wednesday after completing more than eight years on the job. Sturgeon, however, plans to remain in office till her successor is elected. The national executive committee of SNP will meet on Thursday evening to make a timetable for a leadership race.

As there is no obvious successor, the first leadership contest of the party in nearly 20 years can witness a debate on strategy and future direction. The possible replacements include Kate Forbes, who was finance secretary before her maternity leave, Deputy First Minister John Swinney, and Constitution Secretary Angus Robertson.

The names of Justice Secretary Keith Brown and Health Secretary Humza Yousaf have come up as potential candidates, however, no one has expressed their intention to stand.

The announcement was made by Sturgeon at a news conference held at her official Edinburgh residence, Bute House. Sturgeon insisted that she had been weighing up the decision for some time.

To serve people well, a politician must be willing to make way for someone else when it is the right time, she said,

"In my head and in my heart I know that time is now. That it's right for me, for my party and my country," said Sturgeon.

Sturgeon added that she did not decide to step down in response to the "latest period of pressure", which includes controversies over trans prisoners, gender recognition reforms and the strategy on independence.

Sturgeon spoke about the sacrifices and pressure she faced while in high office, adding: "I am a human being as well as a politician."

After Nicola Sturgeon's surprise resignation, search begins to find successor

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced her resignation from the post on Wednesday (February 15). She stepped down after leading the country for eight years. The Scottish National Party leader announced her departure at a news conference. In recent months, she had come under pressure over a stalled push towards independence and over transgender rights.

As she announced her resignation, Sturgeon said she knew the time was right to quit in "my head and in my heart". Sturgeon was pro-independence and anti-Brexit. In recent months she faced mounting pressure over her tactics for independence and transgender rights.

"This decision comes from a deeper and longer-term assessment," Sturgeon said in a hastily arranged press conference, insisting her departure was "not a reaction to short-term pressures".

"I know it may seem sudden, but I have been wrestling with it -- albeit with oscillating levels of intensity -- for some weeks."

She confirmed that she would remain first minister till the Scottish National Party elects a new leader. She vowed to keep pushing for Scottish independence.

Sturgeon suffered a blow in November when the United Kingdom's top court ruled that the Scottish government could not hold a second referendum without approval from the British parliament.

Sturgeon said in response that she would turn the next British general election into a de facto referendum to ramp on pressure on Westminster to grant another vote.

Support for independence rose above 50% in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling but it has slipped back in recent months.

Sturgeon, 52, had also recently become embroiled in a row over transgender policies after Scotland passed a bill to make it easier for people to change their legal gender.

The Conservative government of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak responded by saying it would block the bill, the first time it had invoked the power to veto a Scottish law, because it would have a broader impact on the United Kingdom.

Scotland was then forced to review the management of trans prisoners and stop transgender people with a history of violence against women being placed in female prisons.

The Scottish government declined to comment.

Political allies immediately paid tribute to Sturgeon, with SNP MP Stewart McDonald describing her as "the finest public servant of the devolution age" and her departure as an "enormous loss".

"Her public service, personal resilience and commitment to Scotland is unmatched, and she has served our party unlike anyone else," he added.

WION Speed News: Scottish first minister Sturgeon set to resign

Starting tomorrow (February 1), transgender women will be banned from competing in contact versions of rugby in Scotland. The body overseeing the sport, Scottish Rugby, released a statement earlier this month where it took the position after amending its existing gender participation policy.

Starting tomorrow (February 1), transgender women will be banned from competing in contact versions of rugby in Scotland. The body overseeing the sport, Scottish Rugby, released a statement earlier this month where it took the position after amending its existing gender participation policy. “This amended policy now aligns with the already published positions of other rugby union governing bodies in the UK and Ireland which follow guidance from World Rugby and the Sports Councils’ Equality Group (SCEG)," read the statement released. However, transgender women are allowed to participate in the non-contact version of the sport. Tartan Touch is one such iteration where the only aim is to touch the ball down over the opponent's goal line by avoiding being touched. The Scottish Rugby Board admitted it was a divisive issue but added that the decision was taken in a sensitive manner. “We fully acknowledge this is a difficult and sadly divisive societal issue, and that has been especially apparent over the last few months. Scottish Rugby has been mindful of this and aimed to deal with the issue in a sensitive manner." While transgender women will not be allowed to participate transgender men may continue to play contact rugby in the men's category, according to the statement released. Notably, World Rugby, in 2020 became the first international sports federation to announce that transgender women cannot compete at the international level of women's game Read more: Top athletics body to allow transgender athletes to compete in women sporting events While Scottish Rugby has taken a stern stance on the issue, World Athletics, earlier this month proposed that transgender women be allowed to compete in the female category in international track and field events. The top athletics body has reportedly started a consultation process with its member federations regarding a proposed rule change. Though a final decision is yet to be made, World Athletics has indicated that rules will be tightened but a full ban will not be implemented. The debate remains centred around fairness and inclusion, whether it is right to let transgender athletes participate in women's competitions. Several studies have shown that males, upon reaching puberty, have increased muscle mass, bone density, and haemoglobin levels - all of which are significant contributors to performance. Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon on Thursday said that the transgender woman, who has been held guilty of raping two women before transition, won’t serve the sentence in the only all-female prison in Scotland.

Isla Bryson, aged 31, who was earlier known as Adam Graham, was held guilty of raping two women in 2016 and 2019 by the High Court in Glasgow on Tuesday.

Bryson, who decided to change gender during the trial at the age of 29, was to be kept in Cornton Vale women’s prison ahead of the prison sentence to be announced next month which led to widespread public anger.

The case comes in the wake of legislation passed last month by Sturgeon’s devolved government which made it easier for citizens to self-identify their gender.

The law has been subsequently been blocked by the government of the United Kingdom from obtaining royal assent, citing that it may have a negative impact on equalities legislation.

“Given the understandable public and parliamentary concern in this case, I can confirm to parliament that this prisoner will not be incarcerated at Cornton Vale women’s prison,” said Sturgeon while speaking at Scotland’s devolved parliament.

“I hope that provides assurance to the public, not least the victims in this particular case," she added.

According to Scottish media, Sturgeon has been forced to take a “humiliating U-turn”.

Bryson, amid court proceedings, claimed that he wished to change his gender from the age of four and is currently looking out for surgery to do gender reassignment.

However, the convict's motives behind such a decision were questioned by Bryson’s estranged wife Shonna Graham.

While speaking to the Daily Mail, she said that Bryson “never once” mentioned feeling “in the wrong body or anything” and added that it was a “sham for attention”.

Labour MP and UK’s shadow interior minister Yvette Cooper, while speaking to BBC Radio on Thursday, said, “This dangerous rapist should not be in a women’s prison.”

Scotland: Transgender rapist to be moved to men's jail, says minister Sturgeon

The British government said on Monday that it will oppose a proposed Scottish bill that would make it easier for people to legally alter their gender, upsetting transgender rights activists and the nationalist Scottish government in Edinburgh. Alister Jack, the secretary of state for Scotland, declared he would stop the measure from receiving royal assent, the last step before it becomes law, because of fear that it contradicts "Great Britain-wide equalities legislation." This law provides women and girls access to single-sex areas like restrooms and shelters, among other things.

The Scottish administration will likely appeal the ruling to the United Kingdom Supreme Court.

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon referred to the Conservative Party's choice as "a full-frontal attack" on the Scottish people.

“The Scottish Government will defend the legislation and stand up for Scotland’s Parliament,” she said on Twitter. “If this Westminster veto succeeds, it will be the first of many.”

The Scottish law does away with the necessity of a gender dysphoria diagnosis by allowing people aged 16 or older in Scotland to change the gender designation on the identity documents of their own choice.

Additionally, it reduces the amount of time that transgender persons must live in a different declared gender before the transition is recognised legally from two years to three months for adults and six months for those between the ages of 16 and 17.

The argument put up by opponents is that it runs the danger of giving predatory men access to places designated for women, including shelters for victims of domestic violence. Others contend that 18 should continue to be the minimum age for transitioning.

Since the establishment of the Scottish government and parliament a quarter century ago, this is the first case in which the UK government has blocked the ratification of Scottish legislation. The action will serve as fodder for nationalists who want Scotland to secede from the United Kingdom and establish an independent nation.

UK: Rishi Sunak's govt overrules Scotland’s gender self-recognition bill

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak-led UK government is likely to block Scotland’s gender reform law, which will make the process of changing gender easier for people. The move comes after Scottish lawmakers on Thursday passed a contentious law which made it both easier and faster for its citizens to change their genders, despite facing protest from within the ruling Scottish National Party (SNP) and "concerns" by the UK government.

However, the passing of legislation leads to a clash with the UK government, which has raised concerns over children's and women’s safety. Scottish government’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said that they will fight all the attempts made to stop the law.

The legislation, which received 86 votes in favour and 39 in opposition in the devolved parliament of Scotland in Edinburgh, removed the need for a gender dysphoria medical diagnosis if a person wants to change his/her gender.

"The motion is therefore agreed and the Gender Recognition Reform Scotland Bill is passed," said presiding officer Alison Johnstone, responding to the public gallery's loud applause. To prevent the legislation from becoming law, the UK government can block the Royal Assent, when the King gives his formal agreement to the Bill and it takes the shape of an Act of the Scottish Parliament.

UK Minister for Women and Equalities Kemi Badenoch said that the bill’s implications on the lives of girls and women have not been considered by the Scottish government. She said in a statement: "The UK government is now looking at provisions that can prompt reconsideration and allow MSPs to address these issues."

As per the legislation, people between the age of 16 and 17 will now be permitted to change their gender. The law has further reduced the required time an applicant needs to live in their new gender before its official recognition from two years to three months and in the case of 16 and 17-year-old citizens, the time required is six months.

The applicant will also be provided an additional time of three months as a reflection period during which the applicant who has initiated the process or considering changing the gender can change their decision. However, the Scottish government argues that the Equality Act will not be impacted by the legislation, which permits transgenders to be excluded from single-sex spaces like changing rooms.

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, who has battled the biggest internal opposition over the legislation in her tenure of eight years, said that the older system for altering gender was "intrusive, traumatic and dehumanising".

Lawmakers in Scotland's devolved parliament passed a contentious law on Thursday (December 22) which makes it easier for people to change their gender. The issue saw a rare rebellion within the ruling Scottish National Party (SNP). The UK government has also voiced 'concerns' about the law. The legislation got 86 votes in favour and 39 against.

As per the new law medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria before altering the gender will no longer be required.

"The motion is therefore agreed and the Gender Recognition Reform Scotland Bill is passed," presiding officer Alison Johnstone said to loud applause from the public gallery.

Now, 16 and 17-year-olds will also be able to change their gender. There were efforts by some Scottish lawmakers to keep the eligible age at 18 years.

The law reduces from two years to three months -- or six months for 16-17 year-olds -- the time needed for an applicant to live in their new gender before it is officially recognised.

An additional three-month reflection period is also required, during which time those who have initiated or are considering altering their gender can change their mind.

Those opposing the law expressed fear that it would be a danger to women and girls, particularly around the provision of single-sex spaces.

But the Scottish government insists the legislation will not impact the Equality Act, which allows for trans people to be excluded from single-sex spaces such as changing rooms and shelters.

Census results published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), on Tuesday, show that less than half of people in the two British nations, England and Wales, identify themselves as Christian. The announcement has also reportedly renewed calls to end the Church of England’s role in parliament and schools.

Meanwhile, two cities in the United Kingdom, Leicester and Birmingham became the first to be labelled as “minority majorities”. Nearly 60 per cent of people in Leicester and 51.4 per cent of Birmingham residents are from ethnic minorities, the census data showed.

Notably, the people were asked what their religion was rather than about their religious practices or beliefs, a question which is optional since 2001. On the other hand, people who said they do not have a religion grew from 25 per cent a decade ago to 37 per cent, last year.

The T20 World Cup 2022 edition's qualifying round has seen plenty of drama and action. On Thursday (October 20), Sri Lanka defeated the Netherlands by 16 runs to enter the Super 12 round whereas Namibia's loss to the UAE in their last face-off resulted in the Dutch line-up also progressing ahead, into the main draw of the competition. While Sri Lanka joins Pool A, the Netherlands will now be a part of Team India-starrer Pool B.

Two more teams will now join the main draw of the tournament on Friday (October 21). Group B, from the qualifiers, has become a congested one with all four teams -- West Indies, Zimbabwe, Scotland and Ireland -- tied with two points each. The equation is simple for all of them. The winner of the West Indies-Ireland tie and Scotland-Zimbabwe match will progress ahead; with the group toppers joining Pool B whereas the other will join Australia-starrer Pool A.

Here's the qualification scenario explained for Group B teams for Super 12

The winner of West Indies-Ireland and Scotland-Zimbabwe will make it to the Super 12 stage. In case both the games are washed out due to rain, with the forecast not looking encouraging in Geelong on Friday, current table-toppers Scotland and Zimbabwe will qualify. If the Zimbabwe-Scotland game is abandoned and the other match is completed, then the winner of West Indies-Ireland will enter Pool B whereas Scotland will proceed to Pool A in the Super 12.

On the other hand, if the Scotland-Zimbabwe game produces a winner and the other encounter is abandoned, then the former match's winner will end as group toppers and go through along with West Indies.

Hence, everything is at stake for all four teams in Group B. It is set to be a memorable end to the qualifiers, which has provided wholesome entertainment for spectators and viewers across the globe.

The historically longest lasting patch of snow in the UK has melted again. With the melting of the Sphinx, Scotland is completely snow-free for the fourth time in the last six years.

WION Climate Tracker: Scotland snow-free for fourth time in last six years

For the fourth time in the past six years, Scotland is entirely snow-free. The Sphinx in the Cairngorms, which had previously been the UK's longest-lasting snow patch, has melted.

The infamous patch had vanished in the last 24 hours, according to snow expert Iain Cameron's report on Friday.

It is believed that the last time it melted completely was in the 1700s, before 1933.

Since the 1960s, researchers have also noticed a tendency toward warmer weather, and they predicted that by the 2080s, Cairngorm would experience some years with little to no snowfall.

A corrie, often known as a depression created by ice or a glacier during the last ice age, is where the Sphinx is located.

'Snow-free' Scotland: No snow in the country for fourth time in six years

Snehan, a fourteen-year-old boy from India is the youngest in the world to swim in the North Channel, the strait between Northern Ireland and south-western Scotland. He performed the feat as part of a six-member team from India that crossed the 35km strait in a relay format. The independent team from India, comprising of three para swimmers and three able-bodied swimmers swam across the strait starting from 6:30 am and completed the swim by 9:09 pm.

Notably, the North Channel is among the Ocean's Seven or the list of seven marathon open water swims. The most challenging factor of swimming across the North Channel is that even the summer temperature of the water is around 12 to 15 degrees Centigrade. Swimming across such waters for a long duration requires special acclimatization and training, over and above the experience of marathon open water swimming.

Starting from Robbie Island (Northern Ireland), the Indian relay team took turns and swam to Port Patrick (Scotland), covering the 35km distance in a duration of 14 hours and 34 minutes. Being a challenging stretch to swim across, only the most experienced and confident swimmers take up this challenge and 14-year-old Snehan was just that, says his coach Vijaykumar.

In terms of the special training undertaken to get used to the cold water, Snehan and the team had reached Europe weeks in advance and started training for nearly four hours a day in the open waters.

Recalling his protege's feats, Dr M. Vijaykumar, Swimming Coach, SDAT, told WION that Snehan had earlier swam the 60km back and forth distance between two points along the Palk Strait - Dhanushkodi In Tamil Nadu and Talaimannar in Sri Lanka, within 19 hours and 45 minutes. He also confidently added that the next task in Snehan's sight is to swim across the English Channel.

Speaking to WION, Snehan said that he started swimming at the age of eight and then graduated to open water sea swimming and bagged Gold at the National Sea Swimming event at Goa and later swam back and forth across the Palk Strait. Outlining the challenges he faced in his latest adventure, he said that it was the risk of encountering poisonous jellyfish, small sharks, and seals. After three arrests were made in Edinburgh on Sunday and Monday as Queen Elizabeth's coffin was moved around the city, Scotland Yard has now said that people "absolutely have a right to protest" about the monarchy. Notably, a man carrying a blank piece of paper was also told he might "offend someone".

A statement was issued by Metropolitan Police after a barrister, Paul Powlesland, filmed an altercation he had with an officer in Parliament Square. Mr Powlesland said the officer told him he risked being arrested if he had written "not my king" on the paper.
