What a rollercoaster ride British citizens have been on since Brexit, COVID-19 and now the fatal energy blow being delivered to hardworking families in this country. From April this year electricity and gas tariffs have gone up by over 50 per cent on average, thanks in part to the price cap being removed by Ofgem and a free for all in a capitalist energy market. The working poor, pensioners, benefit claimants and ordinary folks will have to make a serious choice of whether to feed themselves and their families or heat their homes to keep everyone warm and comfortable. A disgrace for the United Kingdom as it belongs to the G7 club of rich nations.

While rising energy prices will affect most households across the country, they are more likely to disproportionately affect those on the lowest incomes. In the financial year ending in 2020, the poorest 10 per cent of households spent more than half (54 per cent) of their average weekly expenditure (£298.90) on essentials such as housing (including electricity and gas), food and transport. Those in the richest 10 per cent, in comparison, spend 42 per cent of their average weekly spend of £1,073.20 on the same essentials. As usual, during any economic crisis, it’s the working class that suffers the most and are often blamed, even though it’s the fault of our elected politicians and their lobbyist friends and donors.

A perfect storm is brewing for many households in Scotland as a decrease in wages, increase in high food prices, and from April a massive energy price hike. Rishi Sunak, ex-chancellor and now an aspiring prime minister, has not extended the £20 Universal Credit last year as that would have help cushioned the impact a little. The current rate of pay and benefits don’t fit well with a rich nation like the UK. Prepayment meters will see the highest price rise and they are mostly used by the poor and most vulnerable in our society. It beggars’ belief that the citizenry can be so easily misled and benefit claimants scapegoated again and again for the deals made by politicians to rob the taxpayers via their friends and families' companies which are setup simply to steal money officially through various tax havens.

Overall, considering predicted energy price increases alongside a reduction in real wages and the planned increase in national insurance contributions, the Resolution Foundation feared a “living standards catastrophe” in 2022. It is estimated that taxes and energy bills would have risen by an average of £1,200 per household since April 2022 under current government plans.

Among the "wild and fantastic" species discovered in the Cairngorms is a type of fungus that has never before been observed in science.A hitherto undiscovered Squamanita species was discovered as a result of the study, which involved hillwalkers gathering soil samples from some of Scotland's highest summits. In 2021, volunteers took 219 soil samples from 55 of the 58 Munros in the Cairngorms National Park at various heights.

2,748 different species of fungus organisms were found in them after DNA from the soil was collected and sequenced by scientists at the James Hutton Institute. One of these was the fungus Amanita groenlandica, an arctic species that originated in Greenland and had never before been discovered south of Scandinavia.

Another fungus, Acrodontium antarcticum, which is native to Antarctica and has never been identified in the UK before, was discovered. These two endangered species, which have never been discovered together, are reported to prefer the chilly surroundings and weather of Scotland's Cairngorms.

Other peculiar items were discovered in the soil samples, such as the "Strangler" fungus (Squamanita contortipes), which has the power to enslave other fungi. Additionally, two Munros' grasslands included the vivid and colourful Violet Coral fungus, one of the UK's rarest grassland fungi.

Our alpine ecosystems depend heavily on fungus to function, but because they are largely subterranean and alpine habitats are inaccessible and challenging to access, we know very little about their distribution and variety in this famous setting.

The results of this study will considerably advance our understanding of this essential group thanks to the combined efforts of volunteers and scientists, and they may be used to begin determining which habitats and locations are particularly crucial for the preservation of fungal diversity.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson says this is not the right time for Scotland to seek independence saying that the economy is doing better with Scotland as part of the United Kingdom.

Scotland's first minister Nicola Sturgeon is set to lay out her plans later for holding a new Scottish independence referendum, this after she published a paper aimed at making a fresh case for independence for Scotland.

Sturgeon wants Britain to transfer powers to Scotland

Scottish government on Tuesday announced plans to hold a second independence referendum on October 19, 2023, drawing the battle lines for a legal and political tussle with London, as reported by AFP. Addressing the Edinburgh parliament, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon conceded that her devolved administration may lack the power to call the vote without London's approval.

To ensure legal clarity, it will seek an opinion from the UK Supreme Court before it asks voters: "Should Scotland be an independent country?"

The phrasing of the question was the same as Scottish voters were asked in 2014. Then, they agreed to stay in the United Kingdom, and Prime Minister Boris Johnson's UK government says that settled the matter for a generation. But Sturgeon's Scottish National Party (SNP) says the UK's divorce from the European Union, following a 2016 referendum, has transformed the debate.

Most Scottish voters were opposed to Brexit, and the SNP-led government said that with a majority in the

Edinburgh parliament now in favour of independence, Scots should be consulted again. Sturgeon stressed that the "consultative referendum" would only proceed with the approval of the UK Supreme Court.

A vote in favour of independence would still need approval from both parliaments in Edinburgh and London before Scotland could formally break away. If the UK Supreme Court rules that the Scottish government lacks the power to hold the vote without London's agreement, "it will be the fault of Westminster legislation, not the court", she said.

In that scenario, the SNP would use the UK's next general election due by 2024 as a "de facto referendum" on independence, she added.

"Either way, the people of Scotland will have their say."

An island called Skye in Scotland witnessed a special wedding recently. What made the ‘imperfect’ wedding special is the support and generosity of these islanders towards the US couple, who wanted to fulfill their dream of marrying in the Highlands. The couple, Amanda and Paul Riesel, travelled over 4,000 miles from Orlando, Florida to tie the knot on Skye. The couple was planning the nuptials for two years. But their hopes of the memorable wedding got shattered when their flights were diverted to different places. Paul said, “All of us had breakdowns along the way. It was delay, delay, delay.” Finally, the couple reached Skye the night before their wedding only to find out that their luggage had got lost on the journey.

As there was no wedding dress or suit, the couple was about to call off the wedding. But their local photographer, Rosie Woodhouse, had something else in mind. “I told them I was sure I could make this work. Skye is an amazing place,” said Woodhouse.

So, Woodhouse immediately posted a plea on a social media site in Skye. By morning, there were numerous offers of help. Now, the couple had numerous dresses of their size to choose from.

Scottish referee Craig Napier came out as gay on Thursday, becoming the first openly gay figure in the Scottish game since late Hearts forward Justin Fashanu in the mid-1990s. The Category One official follows Blackpool`s Jake Daniels in coming out after the 17-year-old revealed his sexuality last month.

Napier, 32, said he was inspired by the youngster and felt the need to "change the climate" and remove the stigma and fear that others in a similar position may feel. "It`s something I`ve obviously lived with for a long time. It`s been a difficult journey... it`s really important that people like me are willing to sit here and do this," he said in video posted by the Scottish Football Association.

Lower-league referee Lloyd Wilson also came out as gay following Napier`s announcement.

Scotland fell short in their quest to qualify for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 as goals from Andriy Yarmolenko, Roman Yaremchuk and Artem Dovbyk gave Ukraine the win in the Play-off semi-final clash at Hampden Park on Wednesday. With this win, Ukraine have set up the Play-off final against Wales. For Scotland, Callum McGregor`s second-half strike went in vain as they lost 3-1.

The anthems got proceedings underway at Hampden Park - as the Ukraine players each stood draped in their country`s flag for their anthem on an emotional night in their first competitive match since the ongoing conflict began in Ukraine in February. As the game got underway, it was the away side who created the first opening in the 8th minute as Viktor Tsyhankov latched onto a cut-back but his crisp first-time effort was tipped over by Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon.

The Scots grew into the game though and Hickey headed wide before Grant Hanley also missed with a header from a Robertson corner. Ukraine then almost took the lead in the 15th minute, but Gordon once again produced a brilliant save, this time down low to deny Andriy Yarmolenko. It was an open first half and the hosts were the next to pour forward, with Robertson seeing his shot blocked before John McGinn fired over. It was the away side who crafted the next opening in the 33rd minute though and this time Gordon could not repeat his heroics. The dangerous Yarmolenko made a great run to get on the end of a ball over the top, before taking a touch and cutely dinking the ball over the Scottish goalkeeper.

Just that goal separated the sides at the break but it was soon to get worse for Scotland as the visitors doubled their lead on 49 minutes as Roman Yaremchuk rose to head in at the far post. Scotland attempted to rally and McGregor was inches away from pulling a goal back as he charged down a clearance, before substitute Ryan Christie produced a save from Heorhiy Bushchan with a low strike.McGinn then narrowly missed the target with a glorious-headed opportunity as the hosts began to pile on the pressure. It was Scotland`s best period of the game and Che Adams was next to come close with a low drive before McGinn`s follow-up was excellently blocked. The pressure soon told and it was McGregor who got the Scots on the scoresheet in the 79th minute.

Stuart Armstrong`s lofted cross was only parried by Bushchan and the midfielder followed up to strike on the half-volley, with hawk-eye ruling that the ball had just carried over the line after a touch from the Ukrainian goalkeeper. The home support roared on their side and they continued to press for an equaliser but Hanley`s missed header was the closest they came to a leveller. There was to be a cruel end for Scotland as Ukraine broke forward in the 95th minute and substitute Artem Dovbyk scored a third with the last kick of the game after a counterattack.

A 390 million-year-old fish-like creature with four limbs that was discovered in Scotland in the 1890s has been revealed to be the first ancestor of all four-limbed animals, including humans. This ancient creature was unearthed at a prehistoric graveyard in Caithness. A new research study has said that the creature, called Palaeospondylus gunni, could be the ‘missing link’ in the evolution of vertebrates. Notably, the researchers found an abundance of these fish-like creature from the Scotland prehistoric graveyard. Even though it was discovered over 130 years back, the scientists have been finding it difficult to place it on the evolutionary tree, as the Palaeospondylus was only about two inches (5 cm) long, making cranial reconstructions difficult.

But now, researchers from RIKEN Cluster for Pioneering Research in Japan uncovered evidence that the creature had a jaw and four limbs, reports DailyMail.com

The research put this creature at the bottom of the family tree for vertebrates, including humans.

This ancient creature had a flat head, an eel-like body and lived on the bed of a deep freshwater loch, feeding on leaves and other organic debris, says the study published in the journal Nature.

And at that time, Scotland's landmass was placed south of the equator, where central Africa is today. It was arid and “semi-hot”, according to scientists.

Palaeopondylus was the first vertebrate to make it their way out of water. Eventually, it’s fins grew into limbs and gave rise to mammals, birds and reptiles.

"Palaeospondylus gunni, from the Middle Devonian period, is one of the most enigmatic fossil vertebrates,” lead author Professor Tatsuya Hirasawa, of Tokyo University in Japan, was quoted as saying by the The Scotsman newspaper.

"Its phylogenetic position has remained unclear since its discovery in Scotland more than 130 years ago. Whether these features were evolutionarily lost or whether normal development froze half-way in fossils might never be known.”

“Nevertheless, this evolution might have facilitated the development of new features like limbs.”

A 390 million-year-old fish-like creature with four limbs that was discovered in Scotland in the 1890s has been revealed to be the first ancestor of all four-limbed animals, including humans.

But now, researchers from RIKEN Cluster for Pioneering Research in Japan uncovered evidence that the creature had a jaw and four limbs, reports DailyMail.com The research put this creature at the bottom of the family tree for vertebrates, including humans. Scotland is witnessing a resurgent Covid pandemic as a total of 9,533 new cases have been reported in a day.

However, no new deaths were reported on Sunday.

According to local media, the number of people in hospitals with Coronavirus in Scotland has reached its highest total since the start of the pandemic in 2020.

The figures released by the government show that 2,128 patients were admitted to the hospital with the virus on Sunday, a record high, with 31 severely ill in intensive care, the Daily Mirror reported.

Officials from the Scottish Government have warned the number may be even higher as register offices are generally closed at weekends.

The country has been recording a spurt in infections as the government has eased the remaining Covid restrictions.

Last week, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said that the quick-spreading BA.2 sub-variant of Omicron has become the dominant strain of Coronavirus in Scotland.

She added that the legal requirement to wear face masks in certain public places will continue until at least the start of April after a surge in Covid cases.

The remains of the largest pterosaur on record from the Jurassic period with a wingspan of more than 8 feet and a mouth full of sharp teeth was unearthed in Scotland.

The flying reptile—dating between 201.3 million and1 45 million years ago—was found in Isle of Skye, Scotland, in 2017. Its skeleton was embedded in limestone.

A PhD student, Amelia Penny, spotted its sharp-toothed jaw protruding from an ancient limestone on Skye's coast.

A detailed examination was undertaken following its discovery in 2017, and the study was recently published in the journal, Current Biology.

According to the studies, the winged lizard had a 2.5m (8ft) wingspan— around the size of the largest flying birds today, such as the wandering albatross.

The research, led by PhD student Natalia Jagielska, also revealed that the creature was a species new to science.

It has now been given Scottish Gaelic name Dearc sgiathanach (jark ski-an-ach), a double meaning of "winged reptile" and "reptile from Skye,"

“Dearc is the biggest pterosaur we know from the Jurassic period, and that tells us that pterosaurs got larger much earlier than we thought, long before the Cretaceous period, when they were competing with birds — and that's hugely significant,” study senior researcher Steve Brusatte, a professor and personal chair of paleontology and evolution at the University of Edinburgh, said in a statement.

Pterosaurs, which are not dinosaurs, are the first known vertebrates to have evolved powered flight — a feat they accomplished about 50 million years before birds did.

The oldest pterosaurs on the record date to about 230 million years ago, during the Triassic period, and it was previously thought that they didn't reach huge sizes until the very late Jurassic or the Cretaceous period (145 million to 66 million years ago).

However, to fly, pterosaurs needed lightweight, delicate bones — a feature that means their remains rarely fossilized well.

"To achieve flight, pterosaurs had hollow bones with thin bone walls, making their remains incredibly fragile and unfit to preserving for millions of years," study lead researcher Natalia Jagielska, a doctoral candidate of paleontology at the University of Edinburgh, said in the statement.

"And yet our skeleton, about 160 million years on since its death, remains in almost pristine condition, articulated [the bones are in anatomical order] and almost complete. Its sharp fish-snatching teeth still retaining a shiny enamel cover as if he were alive mere weeks ago."

Scotland to offer COVID vaccines to all 5-11 year olds

Scotland`s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon urged the Scottish Professional Football League to take action over Raith Rovers` signing of striker David Goodwillie, who in 2017 was ruled in a civil case to have raped a woman along with a former team mate.

Goodwillie and former Dundee United team mate David Robertson were ruled by a civil court judge to have raped a woman after a night out in 2011 and ordered to pay her 100,000 pounds ($135,590) damages.

No criminal case was ever brought against Goodwillie or Robertson after the Crown Office deemed there to be insufficient evidence. He maintains his innocence, saying they had consensual sex.

"It would be appropriate for the SPFL to take action," Sturgeon said on Wednesday. "We have to recognise footballers are role models and young boys and girls look up to footballers so there is a responsibility on football clubs to make sure those role models are positive.

"We are talking about a football player who in a civil court was found to have raped a woman, who as far as I`m aware, has never shown any remorse or reflection and I think that sends a really damaging message.

The First Minister of Scotland and Leader of the Scottish National Party, Nicola Sturgeon, has stated that the restrictions placed in place to stop the spread of the Omicron form of COVID in Scotland will be relaxed on Monday.

More recent numbers showing a decrease in infections, according to the First Minister, "gives us confidence that we have turned the corner on the Omicron wave."

As a result, she stated that the restrictions, which include a limit on the number of people who can attend indoor events, table service only at bars and other venues that serve alcohol, and the shutdown of nightclubs, will be abolished on January 24.

She also said there would be no extension to coronavirus vaccine passports at the moment, stating: "Given that cases are now falling quite rapidly, and the current wave is receding, we decided that we will not at this stage extend the Covid certification scheme to other premises."

Her remarks came as the Scottish Conservatives advocated for the end of January to be the end of practically all coronavirus restrictions.

The UN climate summit COP26 in Glasgow this month resulted in close to 300 people testing positive for Covid.

A preliminary assessment concluded that 291 positive COVID-19 tests were linked to COP26-related activities.

Speaking to Holyrood, Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland, confirmed that there have been no substantial increases in cases.

She said that in order to minimize the risks of Covid transmission, strict measures were put in place. For example, anyone entering the main summit site, known as the Blue Zone, had to show evidence that their lateral flow test result was negative.

Before entering the venue, attendees had to provide evidence of a negative lateral flow test; mask-wearing and a rigorous cleaning regime were also enforced.

Public Health Scotland reported that approximately four out of every 1,000 members of COP26 tested positive for Covid through routine lateral flow testing.

According to the First Minister, this all suggests that mitigation measures were successful.

The findings from Public Health Scotland (PHS) measured the number of people who had attended events related to the climate summit, including workshops and protests outside the Scottish Events Campus in Glasgow.

In the conference centre itself, four out of every 1,000 people tested positive for the virus.

In the week of November 6, approximately 12 out of every 1,000 people in the wider Scottish population tested positive for the disease.

In light of the summit's closure on Saturday, PHS said it further needs to assess the effect of the summit on case numbers.

The PHS report indicates that 92 people tested negative but were in the venue while potentially infected.

According to the report, one explanation for this is that LFDs are less sensitive than PCR-based tests. This may have led to early asymptomatic infections being missed.

An additional linkage of LFD and PCR may identify individuals who only tested positive by PCR, or, alternatively, those who subsequently tested negative by PCR.

The addition of this analysis will be important in refining final estimates of infection rates among COP26 affiliates.

PHS's early analysis of surveillance data shows that COP26 has not been associated with an increase in COVID-19 infections in Scotland. However, a more thorough evaluation is needed, including observations and analyses of data from several weeks after the summit.

The PHS will publish an update to this report by the end of December 2021, unless more urgent communication is needed.

COP26 climate summit: Nearly 300 people tested positive for COVID-19 after event

Barack Obama's speech at COP26 was tarnished by a couple of noticeable gaffes, according to Scottish listeners.

Speaking at the Glasgow Climate Conference, the former US president initially referred to his region as the "Emerald Isles," and then to William Shakespeare as "the Bard."

"Since we’re in the Emerald Isles here, let me quote the Bard, William Shakespeare," Obama said.

"The Emerald Isle" is a romantic moniker for Ireland, not the United Kingdom, and Shakespeare is regarded as the "Bard" of England, rather than Scotland, where the poet Robert Burns retains that distinction.

In the midst of the Cop26 climate talks in Glasgow, the UK's longest-lasting snow patch has melted away, for only the eighth time in 300 years.

Nicknamed “the Sphinx”, the hardy piece of snow has survived countless summers on a remote mountainside in the Cairngorms.

The patch of resilient snow resides on Braeriach in Aviemore, Scotland's third highest mountain at 1,296 metres (4,252 ft). After shrinking to the size of an A4 piece of paper in recent weeks, it finally disappeared in mild weather.

According to Iain Cameron, who has studied snow patches in Scotland for 25 years, global warming is a major factor.

How ironic and prophetic, he observed, noting that before 2000 it had melted only three times in the past 150 years.

Records indicate that previously the Sphinx melted fully in 1933, 1959, 1996, 2003, 2006, 2017 and 2018. Prior to 1993, it is believed that the ice melted completely in the 1700s.

According to Cameron, the increased rate of melting is a logical consequence of warmer weather caused by the climate crisis.

Research shows that patches of snow are becoming smaller and fewer, he said, adding that there is less snow in winter than in the 1980s or 1990s.

Since the winter of 1983-84, declining snow cover has been observed on Cairngorm mountain, according to a report commissioned by the Cairngorms national park authority and published last year.

Furthermore, researchers noted that temperatures have been rising since the 1960s and predicted there would be some years with very little or no snow on Cairngorm by the 2080s.

As a result of a lack of snow, Scotland's ski resorts had one of their most difficult seasons in 2019.
