Scientists decode secret of eternal youth: Be born as turtle

Do you remember your science lessons from school? Do you remember learning about chromosomes? We were taught that there are two chromosomes X and Y and that each of us has a set of chromosomes. Individuals with XX (or two X chromosomes) are female, while those with XY (or one X and one Y chromosome) are male. A recently published study has now revealed that many men can actually carry an extra chromosome. The study was published in the journal Genetics in Medicine. It included data on more than 207,000 men. It was discovered that of the participants, over 350 had an extra chromosome, either X or Y. Very few of these men knew about this abnormality or had it mentioned in their medical records.

Talking to the Guardian Dr Ken Ong, co-senior author of the study who is a pediatric endocrinologist in the Medical Research Council (MRC) Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cambridge says that they were surprised at how common this abnormality is.

Pluto may have been stripped of his status as a planet but the distant icy world, and its satellite Charon are surely objects of study. Pluto is more than 5 billion years away from Earth.

Voyager spacecrafts have travelled further into space than any made-made space vehicle has ever gone. Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, launched in 1977, were meant to last just five years. But decades on, the spacecrafts have continued on their path sending back invaluable data never before obtained.

The spacecrafts are humankind's imprint on the space. The spacecrafts are so far away from Earth it takes 20 light hours and 33 minutes for a signal to travel from Voyager-1 to Earth. In case of Voyager 2, a signal takes 18 light hours to reach Earth. These spacecrafts are 23.3 billion kilometres from Earth.

These spacecrafts carrying out such a long journey is in itself a wonder and a thing to be proud of as a human. But the arduous and still continuing journey has begun to take its toll it seems. NASA has been gradually turning off equipments aboard both the spacecrafts.

Both of these probes are equipped with television cameras, infrared and ultraviolet sensors, magnetometers, plasma detectors, and cosmic-ray and charged-particle sensors. But 44 years on, the need to conserve energy in order to transmit data has assumed great priority.

NASA has hence been gradually switching of instruments one by one. It has been decades since NASA shut down cameras on the probes. And though it feels sad it appears that NASA would continue shutting down more instruments.

Though it is not certain, will there be a time when we would cut all contact with both spacecrafts? The Voyagers will continue their journey into nothingness of space even after that. They will bear testimony of human ingenuity as they would chart lonely path in the deep expanse.

A star when alive and kicking, can literally be life-giver in its planetary system. Take for example the Solar System. The Sun created the planetary system, and endowed Earth with life itself. The planets peacefully revolve around the star and everything is somewhat alright.

But astronomers have now observed a dead star who is involved in what is being called 'cosmic cannibalism. The dead star is ripping apart its own planetary system.

However, prior to becoming a White Dwarf, such star becomes Red Giant. In this phase, it expands rapidly and disrupts orbits of the planets revolving around it. This sends them on a haywire path.

What's happening, in this case, is that the planets are disintegrating due to the tidal forces of the White Dwarf. The result is total chaos with planetary material falling onto the White Dwarf star.

We may get to witness this cosmic process from afar but 5 billion years in future when the Solar System will meet the same fate.

"When a star like our Sun expands into a bloated red giant late in its life, it will shed mass by puffing off its outer layers. One consequence of this can be the gravitational scattering of small objects like asteroids, comets, and moons by any remaining large planets. Like pinballs in an arcade game, the surviving objects can be thrown into highly eccentric orbits," says NASA on its website.

"...5 billion years from now. Earth might be completely vaporized along with the inner planets. But the orbits of many of the asteroids in the main asteroid belt will be gravitationally perturbed by Jupiter and will eventually fall onto the white dwarf that the remnant Sun will become."

A dead star is ripping apart its planets in 'cosmic cannibalism'

Scientists say they have found the origins of the black death, the health catastrophe that killed tens of millions in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa in the 14th century. What did the researchers find and where did they find it?

Did scientists find origins of black death, bubonic plague after 675 years?

China says it has received signals from aliens: Report

Mosquitoes sleeping is something that's unbelievable to many of us, in the first place. The nasty insects appear to know when we are at the sweet spot of our slumber and carry out deep calculations to give us the cursed prick. Well yes, mosquito bites are serious as they can spread disease. But on a comfortable night, these bites can make us prefer hell.

But apparently, mosquitoes do sleep. Researchers from the University of Cincinnati can attest to that. Not only this, they've also concluded that if mosquitoes are sleep deprived, they prefer to sleep rather than go on blood-sucking frenzy.

So in essence, mosquitoes do value sleep, but only their own.

To check when the mosquitoes slept, researchers released the insects in small enclosures inside laboratory and used cameras and infrared sensors to keep an eye on them.

They determined that mosquitoes slept when their abdomens dropped to ground and hind legs drooped.

Some of the mosquitoes were then kept in clear tubes and were sleep deprived for 12 hours. This was done by vibrating the tubes every few minutes. After that, their reaction to a possible host was tested by inserting a pad of artificial sweat.

Doze over dine: Sleepy mosquitoes ignore food, says a study

According to new research, children who learn to play well with others at a young age have better mental health as they grow older.

The findings of the research were published in the journal `Child Psychiatry and Human Development`.

The findings provide the first clear evidence that `peer play ability`, the capacity to play successfully with other children, has a protective effect on mental health.

Researchers at the University of Cambridge analysed data from almost 1,700 children, collected when they were aged three and seven. Those with better peer play ability at age three consistently showed fewer signs of poor mental health four years later. They tended to have lower hyperactivity, parents and teachers reported fewer conduct and emotional problems, and they were less likely to get into fights or disagreements with other children.

Importantly, this connection generally held true even when the researchers focused on subgroups of children who were particularly at risk of mental health problems. It also applied when they considered other risk factors for mental health - such as poverty levels, or cases in which the mother had experienced serious psychological distress during or immediately after pregnancy.

The findings suggest that giving young children who might be vulnerable to mental health issues access to well-supported opportunities to play with peers - for example, at playgroups run by early years specialists - could be a way to significantly benefit their long-term mental health.

Dr Jenny Gibson, from the Play in Education, Development and Learning (PEDAL) Centre at the Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge, said: "We think this connection exists because through playing with others, children acquire the skills to build strong friendships as they get older and start school. Even if they are at risk of poor mental health, those friendship networks will often get them through."

Vicky Yiran Zhao, a PhD Student in PEDAL and the first author of the study added: "What matters is the quality, rather than the quantity, of peer play. Games with peers that encourage children to collaborate, for example, or activities that promote sharing, will have positive knock-on benefits."

The researchers used data from 1,676 children in the Growing up in Australia study, which is tracking the development of children born in Australia between March 2003 and February 2004. It includes a record, provided by parents and carers, of how well the children played in different situations at age three. These covered different types of peer play, including simple games; imaginative pretend play; goal-directed activities (such as building a tower from blocks); and collaborative games like hide-and-seek.

These four peer play indicators were used to create a measure of `peer play ability` - the underlying ability of a child to engage with peers in a playful way. The researchers calculated the strength of the relationship between that measure and reported symptoms of possible mental health problems - hyperactivity, conduct, emotional and peer problems - at age seven.

The study then analysed two subgroups of children within the overall cohort. These were children with high `reactivity` (children who were very easily upset and difficult to soothe in infancy), and those with low `persistence` (children who struggled to persevere when encountering a challenging task). Both these traits are linked to poor mental health outcomes.

Across the entire dataset, children with a higher peer play ability score at age three consistently showed fewer signs of mental health difficulties at age seven. For every unit increase in peer play ability at age three, children`s measured score for hyperactivity problems at age seven fell by 8.4 per cent, conduct problems by 8 per cent, emotional problems by 9.8 per cent and peer problems by 14 per cent. This applied regardless of potential confounding factors such as poverty levels and maternal distress, and whether or not they had plentiful opportunities to play with siblings and parents.

The effect was evident even among the at-risk groups. In particular, among the 270 children in the `low persistence` category, those who were better at playing with peers at age three consistently had lower hyperactivity, and fewer emotional and peer problems, at age seven. This may be because peer play often forces children to problem-solve and confront unexpected challenges, and therefore directly addresses low persistence.

The benefits of peer play were weaker for the high reactivity sub-group, possibly because such children are often anxious and withdrawn, and less inclined to play with others. Even among this group, however, better peer play at age three was linked to lower hyperactivity at age seven.

The consistent link between peer play and mental health probably exists because playing with others supports the development of emotional self-control and socio-cognitive skills, such as the ability to understand and respond to other people`s feelings. These are fundamental to building stable, reciprocal friendships. There is already good evidence that the better a person`s social connections, the better their mental health tends to be. For children, more social connections also create a virtuous cycle, as they usually lead to more opportunities for peer play.

The researchers suggest that assessing children`s access to peer play at an early age could be used to screen for those potentially at risk of future mental health problems. They also argue that giving the families of at-risk children access to environments which promote high-quality peer play, such as playgroups or small-group care with professional childminders, could be an easily deliverable and low-cost way to reduce the chances of mental health problems later.

"The standard offer at the moment is to put the parents on a parenting course," Gibson said. "We could be focusing much more on giving children better opportunities to meet and play with their peers. There are already fantastic initiatives up and down the country, run by professionals who provide exactly that service to a very high standard. Our findings show how crucial their work is, especially given that the other risk factors jeopardising children`s mental health could often be down to circumstances beyond their parents` control."

Research reveals playing with pre-school friends reduces risk of developing mental health problems

The baby was recently brought to the Rahmania Medical Center in Motihari for treatment as the child was not able to urinate properly. The child seems to have an inflation near stomach, the doctor was told by the family. The doctor, Dr Tabrez Aziz of Rahmania Medical Center, asked for a CT scan of the patient to examine the cause of bloating near the stomach.
Ever wondered what a cat might be thinking when you just go 'ps ps ps' at it? It may well be pointing out cat language grammatical errors in your speech but it may also be angry you are not taking its name. Yes, the cat next to the one you are trying to call might be judging you as well.

A study carried out in Japan has revealed that cat can not only remember their own names but also names of other cats they are familiar with. What's more? The cats may even remember names of people in a household.

Remembering names is a quality we generally associate with dogs. And it's surely scary to think that the aloof creature which appears to look down on humans, in general, is secretly listening to household conversation.

Animal science researcher Saho Takagi along with other researchers carried out the experiment. They selected cats who lived in households that had many cats. Each of these cats was then shown photos of other cats and when the photos were shown, a recording of the owner's voice taking name of the cat was played.

The recording would either play the cat's actual name (congruent condition) or some other cat's name (incongruent condition)

It was seen that cat responded differently in these both cases. It was also seen that incongruent conditions (when name of the cat didn't match that played in the recording) resulted in cats (looking at photo) stare for a longer time, as if puzzled due to mismatched information.
The findings were reported in journal Scientific Reports.

So how about a star made of gold? The concept is certainly novel for us dwellers of solar system which has hydrogen-helium-based star.

So this 'gold standard' star is named HD 222925. It is 1,460 light-years away from Earth. It's not completely made of gold but large number of elements. Scientists have been able to find 65 separate element in this star. That's the maximum number of elements found in a single object outside solar system. The star is at the end of its life as a red giant.

"To the best of my knowledge, that's a record for any object beyond our Solar System. And what makes this star so unique is that it has a very high relative proportion of the elements listed along the bottom two-thirds of the periodic table. We even detected gold," said astronomer Ian Roederer of the University of Michigan.

"These elements were made by the rapid neutron capture process. That's really the thing we're trying to study: the physics in understanding how, where and when those elements were made."

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has plans to build a pair of identical satellites dubbed 'Disha' to study the upper atmosphere. While placed in low earth orbit (nearly 500km above the earth's surface), the spacecraft is meant to study the physics and chemistry of the upper atmosphere, including the distribution of temperature, density, and chemical constituents, and the chemical reactions that occur there.
Elaborating on the significance of a mission such as Disha, Dr Shantanu, Scientific Secretary, ISRO, said that the upper atmosphere was the first region of space to feel the wrath of the sun, before it percolates down to lower altitudes. He added that the mission's scientific objective is to perform space weather studies and solar-terrestrial interactions, so as to have advance warning regarding critical space-based weather events. "Once such warnings are available, we can take preventive action to safeguard our space assets." Disha will be a twin satellite aeronomy mission where both satellites carry similar payloads.
Has a night of (totally avoidable) web-series binging left you cranky the next morning? Did you yell at a person you usually don't yell at? Or did you feel the world was a miserable place (more than you feel normally?

There is a perfect explanation and solution for this. We can end this article by just saying 'go to sleep' but then you'll miss the interesting part that's coming next.

Being cranky after not sleeping well is quite a common thing but scientists have gone one step ahead and concluded that if we don't sleep well, it actually changes the way we see other people (yikes!).

So researchers from Uppsala University in Sweden recruited two groups of 45 participants each. One group was allowed to sleep for 8 hours. And the other group spent a sleepless night.

Each of the participants in both the groups was shown photos with people having variety of expressions. Eye sensing trackers were used to observe their gaze.

It was found that the 'sleepless' group participants were less likely to fix their gaze on the expressions of the people in the photos. They even found them less attractive. Scientists say that not fixing gaze at expressions of a person made the 'sleepless' group more vulenrable to misjudging social cues like smile, anger etc. This had the potential of creating obstacles in their interactions with other people in daily life.

"Since facial expressions are crucial to understanding the emotional state of others, spending less time fixating on faces after acute sleep loss may increase the risk that you interpret the emotional state of others inaccurately or too late," says sleep researcher Lieve van Egmond from Uppsala University in Sweden.

The research has been published in tge journal Nature and Science of Sleep.

Robot which can cook and taste food is here!

It is already known that Covid infection affects physical as well as mental health. But a new study suggests that cognitive impairment caused due to severe Covid infection may be equal to drop of 10 IQ points.

In other words, severe Covid infections may result in loss of cognitive abilities which happens between 50 and 70 years of age. The study has been carried out by a team of scientists from University of Cambridge and Imperial College London.

The study points at the possibility that effects of Covid may be detectable in a person even more than six months after the infection. The cognitive recovery may at best be gradual.

For this study, the researchers sifted through data of 46 patients who were admitted to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge for treatment of Covid.

Six months after their acute illness, the patients were asked to take detailed cognitive tests that checked their memory, attention and reasoning. Results obtained from the group of patients were compared to those obtained from a control group. It was found that Covid survivors had slower response time and were less accurate in their answers in the cognitive tests. Such results were detected six months after the infection. Severe Covid infection may affect thinking similar to 20 years of ageing: Study

Humans demonstrate accuracy, speed, language, and spatial relationship biases when categorizing numbers as odd or even. There has been observed an innate ability in humans to associate even numbers with right hand and odd with the left. It has been found that honeybees can differentiate between even and odd numbers and do that by associating this ability with something. This has been found in a research published in Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution. In their experiment, the scientists divided honeybees into two groups. One group of honeybees was taught to associate even numbers with sugar water and odd number with quinine, a bitter testing liquid. The second group was taught to associated odd numbers with sugar water and even numbers with quinine. Then the groups were taught odd and even numbers (1-10) by using respective number of shapes. It was found that the group of bees that was taught to associate odd numbers learnt quickly than the other group. Hence, the learning bias was found to be opposite to that of humans.

Even honeybees can tell diffrence between even and odd numbers
