Millions of people throughout the world suffer from baldness, and up until recently, hair implants were the only solution. But now, researchers might have discovered the cure for baldness. Researchers from the University of California found a single chemical in hair follicles that regulates both cell division and cell death. Researchers examining hair may have found a way to cure baldness and regenerate damaged organs

A new study suggests that the modern-day cold sores or herpes origins can be traced back to the bronze age, to the time when our ancestors began to engage in romantic and sexual kissing. Today, the virus infects approximately 3.7 billion people, says the study, which was led by an international team of researchers from Cambridge University. The team has discovered and sequenced ancient genomes from the herpes virus, which frequently causes lip sores. The research published in the journal ‘Science Advances’ says that the Neolithic blooming of facial herpes found in the ancient DNA may have corresponded with the introduction of a new cultural activity imported from the east: romantic and sexual kissing. The team extracted viral DNA from the tooth roots of human bones dating back a millennium and then used that information to map ancient herpes genomes.

An analysis showed the painful lip blisters flourished during the Neolithic period, in the wake of vast migrations into Europe from the Steppe grasslands of Eurasia.

Herpes is present in every species of monkey, “so we assume it has been with us since our own species left Africa,” according to co-senior author Dr Christiana Scheib, a research associate at St. John's College in Cambridge.

The study found that interbreeding sparked population explosions across the continent, which fueled increased transmission rates.

“However, something happened around five thousand years ago that allowed one strain of herpes to overtake all others, possibly an increase in transmissions, which could have been linked to kissing.”

Watch | World Hepatitis Day: Expert tells WION how to save kids from disease An analysis showed the painful lip blisters flourished during the Neolithic period, in the wake of vast migrations into Europe from the Steppe grasslands of Eurasia. “However, something happened around five thousand years ago that allowed one strain of herpes to overtake all others, possibly an increase in transmissions, which could have been linked to kissing.” Also read | Earth Overshoot Day: The planet is exhausted. Mankind has already used up its resources for the year 2022 “Herpes has a history stretching back millions of years, and forms of the virus infect species from bats to coral.” The study points out that behaviour is far from universal in human civilizations. The earliest account of kissing is a Bronze Age document from South Asia. A high temperature, nausea, headaches, and swollen, inflamed gums with sores in and around the mouth are just a few of the symptoms of herpes. Herpes can become active after years of dormancy in the body, making it a chronic illness. All the kissing our ancestors’ did is what gave us herpes: Study

A fossil of 550 million-year-old fossil, identified by scientists as 'earliest known animal predator' has been named after British naturalist and TV presenter Sir David Attenborough. The fossil was found in Charnwood Forest, near Leicester in northern England. The specimen has been named Auroralumina attenboroughii. The first part of the name is Latin for 'dawn lantern'. The fossil is from a trove found in 2007.

'Grand Canyon on Mars': ESA clicks Martian feature that's bigger than the original thing

Dogs never cease to surprise us. They seem to read our emotions and be empathetic. Thousands of years with humankind may have made them our best friends, but we have just begun to understand them. A research has now said that dogs may be able to 'see' through their powerful sense of smell.

That dogs sense of smell is much superior to humans is a known fact. Their nose has more than 220 million odour-detecting cels, more than four times than those in humans. This is pretty much known.

But the new research suggests that smell may form much greater part in dog's perception of its surroundings than thought before.

The researchers scanned brains of 23 domestic dogs with the help of a special MRI. They found that connections between regions of the brain that processed smell and vision were especially strong.

"We've never seen this connection between the nose and the occipital lobe, functionally the visual cortex in dogs, in any species," Cornell University neuroimaging researcher Pip Johnson explains. He was quoted by Cornell Chronicle

"It was really consistent. And size-wise, these tracts were really dramatic compared to what is described in the human olfactory system, more like what you'd see in our visual systems."

What this means is that dogs form spatial awareness, a mental picture of surrounding more using their sense of smell like we do using vision.

This perhaps explains why even blind dogs can play a game of fetch.

The research has been published in The Journal of Neuroscience.

But so is Jupiter, in fact, Jupiter is bigger than Saturn, then why it does not have Saturn-like rings?

A recent study from the University of California, Riverside (UCR) throws light on the reason why Jupiter does not have Saturn-like rings. Findings of this study were reported in the journal Planetary Science.

Into the simulation, they fed info about orbits of Jupiter's four moons and the orbit of the planet itself. They also fed information about how much time it takes to form rings around the planet.

Kane found that the reason why Jupiter could not form Saturn-like moon was its moons. Jupiter has four main moons that were discovered by Galileo.

Why doesn't Jupiter have Saturn-like rings? Here's the answer

Can we form human colonies on Moon and Mars? We do have concept designs ready but travel to space is in itself an extremely expensive enterprise. Space agencies and billionaires like Elon Musk are working in this direction but if a Japanese concept is implemented perfectly, we can possibly hop on to a bullet train and travel to Moon or Mars. After all, it was Japanese who gave the world bullet trains.

Researchers from Japan's Kyoto University and Kajima Construction are planning to make artificial space environment with Earth-like atmosphere in specially made habitable zones on Moon and Mars. They also working on the concept of bullet trains to travel there. For this, the transportation system called 'Hexagon Space Track System' is in the works.

“There is no plan like this in other countries' space development plans. Our plan represents important technologies crucial to ensuring human beings will be able to move to space in the future,” said Yosuke Yamashiki, director of the SIC Human Spaceology Center of Kyoto University in a press conference earlier this month.

“As the idea of living in space becomes more realistic, the problem with the low gravity, which I intuitively became aware of when I was a child, is an issue we must overcome. We are committed to achieving the plan so it will be useful for human beings,” said Takuya Ono, a project associate professor with the Center and a senior researcher at Kajima.

What is gravitational lensing?

A large celestial body having huge amount of mass, a galaxy for example, has an effect on the spacetime fabric around it. The massive gravity ‘bends’ the fabric of the space. This is called gravitational lensing. Due to this bending, some rays of light emanating from the same object cause the lensing (or an object placed behind the object causing the lensing) travel along the bent space-time fabric. This forms a mirror image of, either the same object or the object behind it.
In this case, the mirror-image is of the same galaxy.
Another feature of such a lensing is that it magnifies the image of the object. This makes it easier for us to study the celestial body in detail.

Check out the image posted by European Space Agency. “This NASA/ESA @HUBBLE_space Telescope image shows a gravitationally lensed galaxy with the name SGAS J143845+145407 😮 Gravitational lensing has caused a mirror image of the galaxy at the centre of this picture, creating a captivating centrepiece,” says ESA in its tweet while sharing the image. 📸 This NASA/ESA @HUBBLE_space Telescope image shows a gravitationally lensed galaxy with the name SGAS J143845+145407 😮 Gravitational lensing has caused a mirror image of the galaxy at the centre of this picture, creating a captivating centrepiece 👉 https://t.co/QAT8CVVMBX pic.twitter.com/sKv8UfQEEN — ESA (@esa) July 18, 2022 × What is gravitational lensing?
A recent study found that there’s an increase in the proportion of healthy kids who are dieting to reduce their weight. Everybody is so conscious and particular about their weight, and how they look, majorly youngsters. Experts from Oxford University surveyed 34,000 kids on their weight and discovered that the proportion of kids with a healthy body mass index (BMI) has tripled in the previous two decades. In a survey, children were asked if they want to grow, maintain or reduce their weight. Only 5 per cent said they were keen to lose weight when this study began in 1997. More than quarter healthy teenagers are on diet to lose weight, says study

Our Sun packs quite a punch. Not only did it literally form all the planets in the Solar System but is a source of all energy on Earth. It is indeed true that life-sustaining mode of our star is always on. But there are times when Sun 'sneezes' (well, kind of) and it means some major disruption on Earth. A solar flare is on its way to Earth and it is expected to spell trouble for us.

USA's National National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has raised an alarm over this solar flare which erupted from the Sun on July 14.

"A solar flare is an intense burst of radiation coming from the release of magnetic energy associated with sunspots. Flares are our solar system’s largest explosive events. They are seen as bright areas on the sun and they can last from minutes to hours," says NASA.

This solar flare will not mean something as dramatic as end of humanity, but a sufficiently powerful solar flare can make our satellites defunct. This in turn may have major effect on many functions on Earth. We will be safe because Earth's magnetic field will shield us from harmful radiation. But disruption in communication on Earth is enough to disturb flow of modern life.

"The long snake-like filament cartwheeled its way off the #Sun in a stunning ballet. The magnetic orientation of this Earth-directed #solarstorm is going to tough to predict. G2-level (possibly G3) conditions may occur if the magnetic field of this storm is oriented southward!" said Dr Tamitha Skov on Twitter. Her Twitter profile says that she is space weather expert.

We have a visitor in our backyard. Comet K2 is set to fly by Earth this week. Comets are not rare as much as they are fascinating. They are made of water, dust and ice. Comet K2 is the most distant active comet found. And this one has scientists scratching their heads.

Comets 'live' in Oort cloud, a repository of comets and other frozen spacaballs in the outer reaches of our Solar System. When external gravitational forces nudge one of the comets, it comes under the gravitational influence of the Sun and begins travelling million of miles towards the Sun. As the comet gradually comes closer to the Sun, it begins warming up and ice begins melting. As this happens, the water and other materials form the tail and halo of the comet.

Usually, this process starts when the comet is around Jupiter. But Comet K2 gave signs of this activity when it was around Neptune. The comet developed a halo when it was in a region of Solar System where solar rays are too feeble to melt ice on the comet.

Comets are like time capsules. They contain within them elements and materials that were formed at the time of formation of the Solar System. Study of comets is hence very important for scientists.

"It's kind of like being able to touch something from the beginning of the solar system," David Jewitt, an astronomer at University of California, Los Angeles, told Space.com. "It's probably the most primitive thing in the inner solar system at this time."

Mysterious Comet K2 baffles scientists

Most of us think of our Solar system as a nice little cozy cocoon inside which planets are safely embedded and we are doing what we do on Earth with complete safety. Little do we realise that Solar System is revolving around centre of the Milky Way Galaxy at huge speed and other celestial bodies are very much present around the solar system.

Another star may thus fly by the solar system. And if it does it while being a little too close for comfort, it may also result in collapse of the Solar System.

The passing star may exert its gravitational pull on planets in the Solar System and may alter their orbits, thus sending them colliding into each other.

Garret Brown and Hanno Rein, two researchers at University of Toronto have studied this possibility. They've found that gravity of the foreign star nudges orbits of some of the planets even by 0.1 per cent, it may wreak havoc.

So how close is too close for comfort?

The study has found that a distance of 23 billion miles between the Sun and the other star may make things a bit uncomfortable. This may appear a huge distance but just to put into perspective, Proxima Centauri, the star closest to our Siolar System is 24.8 trillion miles away. So 23 billion miles is much less of a distance.

Fortunately, the destruction of Solar System, if at all it happens, may not happen instantly. The process may take billions of years.

Our Solar System may collapse if a passing star came too close

Gravity is something we take for granted here on Earth. It's an everyday phenomenon that doesn't dominate our daily calculus until we fall spread-eagled on the floor after a nasty slip. Astronauts may not 'fall' in the sense we do here on Earth but they are sure to sometimes wish there was a bit of gravity in space. For astronauts working aboard International Space Station (ISS) zero-gravity means anything that slips from hands goes in any direction it pleases. Besides, its hard to control stuff when you yourself have no weight and are floating inside the space station.

It may look fascinating to see astronauts floating around but zero-gravity has negative impact on human bodies. Prolonged effects include decrease in bone mass. Researchers and engineers from Japan's Kyoto University and Kajima Construction Co. are working on a system that will create 'artificial gravity' that will support human life in space.

These experts are trying to harness Centrifugal Force to create artificial gravity. They are designing a craft that will have a component that will revolve while in space. Astronauts inside that component would experience Centrifugal Force which will keep them steady on surfaces like gravity does on Earth.

The architecture will be cylindrical, 100 metres wide and upto 400 metres tall (328 feet wide and 1,312 feet wide). In order to create artificial gravity, it will complete one revolution every 20 seconds. This will generate 1G of gravity which will be equivalent to that on Earth.

If Humankind is able to achieve creation of artificial gravity, it will open a new vista of space exploration. Currently, astronauts cannot live in space beyond a certain days as effect of zero gravity begins to kick-in. With artificial gravity, astronauts would be able to stay in space for longer periods. This would come in handy in case of space voyages that would require years of space travel.

German researchers recently discovered that patients with monkeypox have high chances for virus load that can be ‘potentially’ contagious. With assistance from the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM) and University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), the researchers examined the hospital rooms of two monkeypox. "To my knowledge, our study is the first to assess the relationship between adding salt to foods and premature death." Also read | Researchers detect microplastics in meat, milk and blood of farm animals He added, "Even a modest reduction in sodium intake, by adding less or no salt to food at the table, is likely to result in substantial health benefits, especially when it is achieved in the general population." Also read | Deep-sea mining noise pollution will stretch hundreds of miles: Study Those who constantly season their food had a 28 per cent higher chance of passing away before their time compared to those who never or never applied salt. Men and women who consistently added salt had reduced life expectancies at age 50. Age, sex, ethnicity, deprivation, body mass index, smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, food and medical disorders like diabetes, cancer and heart disease were also taken into account as potential outcome modifiers.
