Iran is intensifying pressure in West Asia through its Houthi allies, who have launched fresh attacks on Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea, raising fears of a major global energy crisis. With the Strait of Hormuz already under pressure, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait has emerged as a second strategic choke point, threatening global oil and gas supplies.

The Houthis claim responsibility for missile and drone strikes on Saudi-linked vessels, while Saudi Arabia has confirmed damage to one of its oil tankers. Analysts warn that if both the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb are disrupted simultaneously, nearly one-quarter of the world's oil and gas supply could be affected.

Iran Blocks Strait of Hormuz | Saudi Tanker hit in Red Sea | Trump says Iran will agree to deal

The Red Sea crisis is entering a dangerous new phase after Yemen's Iran-backed Houthis announced a naval blockade targeting Saudi Arabia. In this explainer video, we use detailed maps to explain why the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandab Strait are two of the world's most strategic maritime chokepoints, and how any disruption could impact global trade, oil supplies, and energy prices.

We also examine the Houthi blockade, the risks of a wider regional conflict, and how Pakistan's long-standing defence cooperation with Saudi Arabia could force Islamabad to join if tensions continue to escalate.

The US has quietly agreed to let Saudi Arabia enrich its own uranium — without the strict UN checks normally used to stop countries from secretly building nuclear weapons. The deal was finished back in October 2025, but Trump still hasn't signed it. Part of the holdup: he's been bombing Iran for doing the exact same thing. If approved, Saudi Arabia would get nuclear rights similar to Iran's, raising fears about where this material could end up.

Israeli media reports claim several Arab leaders have privately urged US President Donald Trump to reconsider his support for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, reportedly viewing Netanyahu's government as an obstacle to broader Middle East diplomatic efforts. The reports come as discussions continue over Trump's regional plans and Israel's upcoming elections. Meanwhile, Israeli President Isaac Herzog has called for progress on normalising ties with Saudi Arabia, expressing hope for closer relations with Riyadh. Saudi Arabia had paused normalisation talks with Israel following the Gaza war and has maintained that any agreement depends on progress toward establishing an independent Palestinian state.

Saudi Arabia has reduced the price of its flagship crude sold to Asian buyers for August by the largest margin in at least 26 years. As a result of this, State-owned Saudi Aramco will lower the official selling price (OSP) of its benchmark Arab Light crude by $11 per barrel, leaving it at a $1.50 discount to the regional benchmark. The reduction happened because global crude prices have weakened since mid-June after the United States and Iran reached an agreement to end the war that started in February this year and disrupted the oil supply through the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude has since fallen to about $72 a barrel, returning to levels last seen before the war. Additionally, exports resumed from the Persian Gulf, and Saudi Aramco increased shipments from Ras Tanura to roughly 90 per cent of pre-war levels. Why Saudi Arabia has made its biggest oil price cut in decades

The longstanding U.S.-Saudi security architecture is facing its most significant crisis in decades. Following sharp disagreements over the ongoing conflict with Iran, the United States is reportedly considering a reduction in its military footprint within the Kingdom, potentially redeploying assets to more cooperative regional partners like Israel and Jordan.

Reports: U.S. weighs cutting military presence in Saudi Arabia

Reports of a possible U.S. troop withdrawal from Saudi Arabia have reignited debate over the future of one of the Middle East’s most important strategic partnerships. According to reports, Riyadh declined to allow the use of its bases for operations linked to the Hormuz Strait during tensions surrounding the Iran conflict.
