West Asia remains on edge as fighting between Iran-backed Houthis and Yemeni forces supported by Saudi Arabia continues to escalate. In the past two days alone, 154 people have reportedly been killed in Yemen. Footage released by Houthis shows an alleged Saudi air strike targeting a local market in a village near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. Visuals showed people running for cover as flumes of smoke engulfed the air. According to the Iran-backed group, Saudi Arabia has launched 917 air strikes since the escalation started. It also accused Riyadh of carrying out three air strikes on the strategic port city of Mocha which it seized a few days ago. Houthis claimed that six people died in the strikes, whereas eight others were wounded. This is not all. The group alleged that Saudi Arabia targeted a prison in al-Hazm town, which led to the killing of nine recently captured prisoners. It also added that a mother and her child were killed in separate air strikes in al-Hazm's al-Batin area. Saudi Arabia is yet to react to these claims, though even as Pakistan and US have rebuffed Saudi's requests to join the war against Houthis, UK has now stepped in to help. It has agreed to deploy an RAF Voyager air-to-air refuelling aircraft to support Saudi defensive activity. This aircraft will provide mid-air fuel to Saudi military jets so they can stay airborne longer to intercept Houthi drone and missile attacks. The UK government justified this move by highlighting that escalating West Asia tensions can have a serious impact in Britain in the form of rising prices, disruption to energy supplies and extra costs for local businesses. However, UK has still refrained from directly striking Houthis. Meanwhile, EU's foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated that the bloc's naval mission to protect shipping in Red Sea requires more than ten warships. Known as Operation Aspides, this mission was launched in 2024 to safeguard vessels from attacks by Houthis. At present, six warships are a part of this mission. While drone attacks forced Saudi Arabia to shut its east-west oil pipeline on September 13, it has now restarted operations according to Reuters. Why is this crucial? Since the virtual closure of Strait of Hormuz, the country has been using this pipeline to reroute around four million barrels of oil per day to the Yanbu port located on the Red Sea coast. This accounts for nearly four percent of global oil supply. As the fighting continues, the foreign ministers of G7 condemned the strikes waged against Saudi Arabia and urged Houthis to immediately cease all military actions and return to the political process in good faith. They also called on Iran to end its support for this group. Now, the humanitarian toll of the war in Yemen cannot be understated. According to the international organisation for migration, a staggering one hundred thirty thousand people have been displaced across seven provinces in Yemen. This UN agency also added that over three thousand people have crossed the Red Sea and fled to Djibouti. According to United Nations, an additional one hundred thousand Yemenis could be forced to leave their homes within the next three months. At one such camp for the displaced people in Yemen, authorities described the extent of the humanitarian crisis...

Pakistan signed the Mecca Defence Pact with Saudi Arabia and Turkiye with a very clear promise: an armed attack on one member would be treated as an attack on all three. So here's an uncomfortable question for Field Marshal Asim Munir: what is the impact of this pact?Where is this pact when the Saudis are being attacked by Houthis?Saudi Arabia is facing repeated Houthi missile and drone attacks. Riyadh has been seeking additional military assistance. And what's Pakistan's response? They condemned it. They called for restraint. But no military response under the Mecca Pact. And here's Munir's rather weak reason for not getting involved: the agreement still needs mechanisms and frameworks before its operationalised. That creates an awkward little problem: if an attack on one is an attack on all, when exactly does "all" actually mean all? There is another irony Pakistan cannot escape. While presenting itself as a pillar of regional security, Pakistan is killing civilians in Afghanistan.Just today, Pakistan carried out airstrikes inside Afghanistan, killing 3 locals. Was the Mecca Pact designed as a defence alliance or as a diplomatic declaration that sounds strongest before the first shot is fired?Alliances are ultimately tested not by signatures, ceremonies or speeches. They are tested when an ally calls for help. The Mecca Pact is being tested by reality, and it seems to be failing so far.

Escalation on Iran will fuel tensions in Bab al-Mandeb and become the second chokepoint after Hormuz. And US president seems to be caught in this dilemma. Donald Trump unexpectedly cut short a weekend at Camp David, a secluded presidential complex in rural Maryland, and returned to the White House. The reason behind the move remains unknown. According to a report by New York Times, Saudi Crown Prince convinced Donald Trump to launch strikes on Houthis. US president also asked Pentagon to prepare for the attacks. Commanders had approved target lists, troops were loading bombs onto US warplanes selected for the missions, and the wave of attacks was just about to begin. But Houthis are escalating their attacks on the kingdom while advancing in the territory controlled by Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces. Saudi Arabia has responded with scores of airstrikes on Houthi-held areas but has failed to curtail their advance. The Yemen based group has also warned Mecca Pact signatories. Houthis said Pakistan and Turkiye should be ready for a decisive and painful response if they provide any military assistance to Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, US president is walking down a similar path on Iran. Donald Trump has outlined 3 options amid the deadlock—wiping Iran out, letting them rot economically, or making a deal. Iran has responded with a staunch warning—renewal of attacks will change the geography of war, and the world will be astonished by unseen weapons. During a recent encounter, Iranian air defences shot down American drone over the Strait of Hormuz. UK Maritime Trade Operations also issued a warning regarding Iranian attack on a vessel in the contested waterway. Amid the heated rhetoric, a window of diplomacy is opening up. Iran's President Pezeshkian is scheduled to travel to New York to participate in United Nations General Assembly. There are no direct diplomatic engagements planned with the US, but it will be the first time when a high-level Iranian delegation will be on American soil since the beginning of the war on 28th February this year. Pezeshkian will be flanked by Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi, who made a brief stop in Qatar on his way to New York. According to Doha, mediators are working overtime to revive negotiations between Iran and US. Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi is also in Tehran. However, Iranian media reported that Naqvi is neither carrying a message to Iran nor will Iran send a message to the US through him.

A report prepared by Pentagon's defence intelligence agency raised the possibility of China acquiring F-35 jet technology from Saudi Arabia. Tbe report highlighted how Chinese military is helping Saudis build ballistic missiles and set up production facilities.

As Houthis tighten their grip over the Bab al-Mandeb Strait and continue to attack Saudi Arabia, Riyadh's woes are deepening. According to reports, Saudi Arabia is now running low on missile interceptors, and doubts are growing whether it will get advanced F-35 jets from America. In the latest from the battlefield, Saudi-backed Yemen armed forces released aerial footage of them targeting Houthi premises and equipment during strikes in several areas, including the port city of Mokha. Houthis also accused Saudi Arabia of conducting fresh strikes in Yemen earlier in the day. According to the group, Riyadh targeted three telecommunications towers in Taiz province and also struck the town of Abs. It claimed that three children were killed and several others were wounded. While Riyadh did not confirm these claims, it announced that a Houthi drone had been intercepted and destroyed in the city of Taif. However, the falling debris of this drone reportedly led to the death of a Yemeni resident and left a Saudi woman and a Pakistani national injured. Civilian buildings and vehicles were damaged as well. A day earlier, Houthis claimed to have shot down a Saudi F-15 fighter jet over Yemen's Marib province. Amid its battlefield reverses, a new report claimed that Saudi Arabia had reached out to France, UK, Pakistan and Egypt for emergency air defence support. The outreach was initiated reportedly as its key ally America's own stock of interceptor missiles, has dwindled over the course of the Iran war. https://www.wionews.com/videos/us-intel-warns-china-can-steal-f-35-jets-secret-from-saudis-1789673684934/embed This is not all. According to the New York Times, US intelligence officers have expressed concerns over possible Chinese espionage in connection with the potential sale of 48 F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia, worth nearly 24 billion US dollars. In November 2025 itself, US President Donald Trump had hinted at an F-35 deal with Riyadh. However, a report reportedly prepared by Pentagon's defence intelligence agency raised the possibility of China acquiring F-35 jet technology through spying or its partnership with Saudi. Highlighting how Chinese military is helping Saudis build ballistic missiles and set up production facilities, the report cast aspersions on whether secure sites housing F-35 technology can be maintained. It also questioned whether Riyadh will agree to limit contact with Chinese military and remove equipment of Chinese tech firms from telecommunications and defence installations. Now, this is not the first time the US has proposed to sell these aircraft to its West Asian allies. In 2020, for instance, Trump agreed for a similar deal with UAE. However, the sale didn't go through, as US intelligence agencies raised concerns over UAE's growing ties with China back then. Apart from this, the report suggested that some Israeli officials have also opposed the deal. This is because Israel is the only country in West Asia at present which has F-35s, helping it maintain a qualitative military edge over others. But, why is F-35 so significant? It is considered as the world's most advanced and lethal fighter aircraft. This fifth-generation jet is very difficult for enemy air defence systems to detect. The aircraft is also packed with sensors, missiles and guided bombs. China urges Iran to rein in Houthis after Saudi Arabia’s appeal for help: Report

The Houthis have made a major advance along Yemen’s Red Sea coast, capturing the strategic port city of Mocha (Mokha) and moving closer to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints. The development could give the Iran-backed group greater leverage over a key route linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the wider global shipping network.

A drone approaching Islam's holiest city has brought an old war dangerously close to one of Saudi Arabia's most sensitive red lines.Saudi Arabia says its air defences intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone south of Mecca before it entered the city's prohibited airspace. Riyadh described the security of the Two Holy Mosques and pilgrims as a “red line.”The Houthis deny targeting Mecca. That dispute matters. But behind it lies a much larger question: after more than a decade of military pressure, why are Yemen's Houthis still capable of putting Saudi Arabia on alert?Since Saudi Arabia intervened in Yemen's civil war in 2015, the Houthis have faced military action involving a remarkable collection of regional and global powers.Yet their military capabilities have expanded. The Associated Press reports that their arsenal now includes ballistic and cruise missiles, drones, anti-ship missiles and naval drones. The Houthis are demonstrating military reach. Washington is exploring diplomacy. And global commerce remains exposed to whatever happens around the Red Sea.Saudi Arabia's warning over Mecca therefore carries significance far beyond one intercepted drone.Because declaring a red line is the easy part. The harder question is what happens when an adversary decides to test it.

The conflict in Yemen has intensified after Houthi rebels launched a drone-and-missile attack on a military base in southern Saudi Arabia. The strike reportedly targeted a weapons depot, while Saudi Civil Defence said a mosque in Jazan was also hit. Saudi Arabia has shut down its critical East-West oil pipeline after it came under repeated drone attacks launched from Iraq. The pipeline, which normally pumps up to 7 million barrels a day to the Red Sea coast, was built decades ago specifically to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, but now even that backup route isn't safe. Riyadh says it won't retaliate for now, following a request from Iraq's PM, but has vowed to protect its 'sovereignty, security and critical facilities.'

The Mecca joint defence agreement was signed by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye on August 7 in Mecca. It seeks to strengthen collective deterrence and defence cooperation between the three countries. Pakistan has stepped back from its Houthi warning, saying no military response under the Mecca defence pact is currently being discussed despite Saudi Arabia facing intensified attacks.
