With the aim of bolstering Pakistan’s economic prospects, Saudi Arabia has announced an investment of 25 billion dollars. This substantial influx of capital is slated to unfold over the next two to five years and will target key sectors, including mining, agriculture, and information technology.

Saudi Arabia’s $25 bn lifeline for Pakistan

Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, on Monday announced that Saudi Arabia will spend up to $25 billion over the next two to five years in a variety of sectors and that his administration will also restart the privatisation process that had once stalled.

After evading a sovereign debt default in July thanks to a $3 billion loan plan agreed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Pakistan is starting down a difficult road to economic recovery under the caretaker administration.

Speaking to reporters at his official residence, Kakar said Saudi Arabia would engage in the mining, agriculture, and IT industries as part of efforts to boost foreign direct investment in Pakistan.

This will be Saudi Arabia’s largest-ever investment in Pakistan. If verified by the kingdom, the investments would amount to a total of $25 billion.

Pakistan, a longtime ally of Riyadh, is experiencing a balance of payments crisis and needs billions of dollars in foreign currency to finance its trade imbalance and pay off its foreign loans for the current fiscal year.

Kakar did not name the projects Riyadh was interested in funding, but Barrick Gold Corp stated last month that it was open to partnering with the Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund in Pakistan’s Reko Diq gold and copper mine.

Kakar’s administration has presently estimated Pakistan’s undeveloped mineral deposits at a conservative $6 trillion.

Barrick, which owns a 50 per cent of the Reko Diq mine, believes it to be one of the greatest untapped copper-gold regions in the world. The governments of Pakistan and the Balochistan province jointly own the remaining 50 per cent.

In addition, Kakar stated that his administration would work to privatise another government-owned company outside the energy industry in addition to finanlising two privatisation transactions in the next six months, likely for state-run businesses in the power sector.

State-owned businesses in Pakistan have long been a source of apprehension because of their deteriorating financial conditions. Pakistan recently added the financially troubled state-run Pakistan International Airlines to the list for privatisation.

Saudi Arabia tightens school attendance rules, parents at risk of jail for child’s absence

In a significant course of action against the disruptions caused by the airlines, Saudi Arabia has introduced new amendments for consumer rights protection, allowing air travellers to receive compensation for various disruptions caused by the airlines.

The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) stated that these changes aim to enhance the passenger experience and support the growth objectives of the aviation sector in Saudi Arabia.

What are the new rules?

Additionally, travellers whose baggage is lost or damaged by the airline can receive monetary compensation of up to $1,750 (SAR 6,568), as outlined in the GACA statement.

Saudi Arabia executes US national convicted of torturing, killing his Egyptian father

There is a race against time to sign a normalization deal between Israel and Saudi Arabia a host of issues remain unresolved and now Riyadh seems to be upping the ante by calling for a neo-diplomatic mission for the Palestinians. Our correspondent Jodie Cohen has sent us this report.

Riyadh wants diplomatic mission for Palestine

Amidst evolving geopolitical dynamics, Saudi Arabia appointing Ambassador Nayef Al-Sudairi as a non-resident envoy to Palestine has triggered speculation about diplomatic shifts in West Asia.

The move coincides with ongoing efforts by the United States to foster official relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

However, Israel's rejection of a diplomatic base in Jerusalem for Al-Sudairi highlights the complex web of regional aspirations and international interests.

Saudi Ambassador's enlarged portfolio

Saudi Ambassador to Jordan Nayef Al-Sudairi recently extended his responsibilities to include the role of non-resident envoy to Palestine.

This expansion was marked by adding "consul-general in Jerusalem" to his duties, as indicated by a social media post from the Saudi embassy in Amman.

The announcement seemed to align with the Palestinian ambition of establishing a state with East Jerusalem as its capital, a vision not shared by Israel, which regards Jerusalem as its own capital.

Also read | Protesters take to streets in Israel against Benjamin Netanyahu's judicial overhaul

Conflicting claims and ongoing tensions

Israel's steadfast assertion of Jerusalem as its capital contrasts with international perspectives, and the recognition of this status by the United States in 2017 remains a point of contention.

The longstanding struggle between Israel and Palestine over Jerusalem's sovereignty continues, with Israeli authorities restricting Palestinian diplomatic activities in the city.

Against this backdrop, Saudi Arabia's move to engage in diplomatic representation has raised eyebrows and ignited discussions about potential geopolitical implications.

Saudi Ambassador's enlarged portfolio Saudi Ambassador to Jordan Nayef Al-Sudairi recently extended his responsibilities to include the role of non-resident envoy to Palestine. Against this backdrop, Saudi Arabia's move to engage in diplomatic representation has raised eyebrows and ignited discussions about potential geopolitical implications. Israel rejects Jerusalem diplomatic base for Saudi envoy to Palestinian authority

Saudi Arabia, on Saturday (August 12), selected a non-resident ambassador for the Palestinian Territories who will also serve as consul general in Jerusalem. This comes amid speculations about the Kingdom’s consideration of establishing formal diplomatic relations with Israel.

Who is Saudi Arabia’s pick?

According to a social media post from the embassy in Jordan and confirmed by a Saudi foreign ministry official, the kingdom has picked Nayef al-Sudairi, the current ambassador to Amman as the first non-resident Saudi Arabian ambassador to the Palestinian Territories.

In a video, broadcast by the Saudi state-affiliated Al-Ekhbariya channel, al-Sudairi called the appointment an “an important step” in supporting the Palestinian cause.

The selection also underscores the desire of King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman “to strengthen relations with the brothers of the State of Palestine and give it a formal boost in all areas,” said al-Sudairi.

This comes as Saudi Arabia has reportedly long championed the Palestinian cause and shunned official ties with Israel. However, the United States, which has strong ties with Israel, has sought to promote what could be a historic Middle East deal that would include normalising Israeli-Saudi relations.

So far, the file for the Palestinian Territories has been handled by Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Jordan. Saudi Arabia does not recognise Israel and also did not join the Washington-brokered Abraham Accords which saw Israel establish ties with two of its kingdom’s neighbouring countries, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

Palestinians welcome first Saudi ambassador

Palestinian officials have welcomed the first non-resident Saudi Arabian ambassador. According to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, President Mahmoud Abbas’s diplomatic adviser Majdi al-Khalidi received a copy of the credentials of al-Sudairi, at a ceremony in Jordan.

The Palestinian president’s diplomatic adviser called the appointment an “important step that will contribute to further strengthening the strong brotherly relations that bind the two countries and the two brotherly peoples,” as quoted by Wafa.

A Palestinian Authority official speaking to AFP, on the condition of anonymity said that with this announcement, “Saudi Arabia has reaffirmed its recognition of the state of Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital”.

This comes as Jerusalem is one of the biggest points of contention in a possible peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians. “This is one part of several steps and we will continue to develop the relationship with them,” the Palestinian source added.

Is Saudi Arabia planning to establish ties with Israel?

Last year, during US President Joe Biden’s Middle East tour, the Saudi civil aviation authority announced that it was lifting overflight restrictions on “all carriers” which also paved the way for Israeli planes to use Saudi airspace.

However, the kingdom later denied that the airspace move was a “precursor to any further steps” towards normalisation of ties with Israel. Saudi Arabia has also repeatedly said that it would adhere to the decades-old Arab League position of not establishing official ties with Israel until the conflict with the Palestinians is resolved.

Additionally, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki said the Western-backed Palestinian Authority has sought to engage with Saudi Arabia over their concerns about a possible normalisation of ties with Israel.

This comes as Palestinians have expressed concerns that any such agreement would weaken support for their cause in the wider Arab world as well as undermine their hope for an independent Palestinian state.

Saudi Arabia selects non-resident ambassador for Palestinian Territories

Saudi Arabia is reportedly pushing the United Kingdom, Japan and Italy to allow it to become a full partner in Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) that the three countries signed in December.

How Riyadh is expanding calls to be included in GCAP?

According to the officials in London and Tokyo cited by Financial Times, efforts by Saudi Arabia to join GCAP and expand the programme into a four-nation project have intensified significantly in recent weeks. Saudis fall short of normalising ties with Israel; White House clarifies

Lebanon's largest Palestinian refugee camp, in the southern coastal city of Sidon, has been rocked by fighting since the 30th of July. Clashes broke out between Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas's secular Fatah movement and the Islamist groups Jund Al-Sham and Shabab Al-Muslim over the weekend. More than a dozen people have been killed and dozens wounded and thousands have been forced to flee the violence. A truce was agreed upon, twice, but it did not hold and the fighting continued till Wednesday night. Mohammed Saleh brings you this report.

Factional clashes rock Lebanon’s biggest Palestinian refugee camp

2023 is turning out to be a year of reconciliation in the world's most volatile region. Regional players are aiming for stability after years of war, violence and upheaval. In the latest, Saudi Arabia and Israel seem to be talking indirectly, and Iran is not happy. What is this about?

'No set framework for Saudi-Israel,' says US on brokering normalisation deal between both countries

National security adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday that any deal must not include concessions to the Palestinians because the road to normalizing relations with Saudi Arabia is "still long." The United States has been trying for months to come to what would be a historic accord that Riyadh has hinted would depend on Palestinian statehood but that Netanyahu has argued would be a big step toward settling the Arab-Israeli conflict.

NSA Ajit Doval calls for inclusive solution to Ukraine conflict at Saudi meet

The lengthy, private debate and many hours of comments from the various delegations came to an end on Saturday night at the Saudi Arabian-hosted Ukraine peace talks. But no official announcement was made.

Saudi Arabia hosted Ukraine Peace Talks conclude

In a diplomatic victory for Kiev, the West, and the Saudi hosts, China announced on Friday that it will send a senior official to Saudi Arabia for weekend discussions on finding a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine. Diplomats from Ukraine and the West are hoping that the gathering of national security advisers and other senior officials from over 40 nations in Jeddah will result in an agreement on fundamental principles for a future peace agreement to put an end to Russia's war in Ukraine.
