Moscow currently controls about a fifth of Ukrainian territory, primarily in the country's south and east.

Ukraine’s campaign against Russia’s war-related economic vulnerabilities has expanded beyond oil facilities and energy infrastructure to an unexpected new target: warehouses belonging to e-commerce giant Wildberries. In less than three weeks, Ukrainian drones have struck 23 Wildberries warehouses across Russia, killing nine employees and injuring several dozen others. Several warehouses have reportedly been forced to completely halt operations.
What is Wildberries?
Wildberries is a household name in Russia. Its distinctive purple-and-pink plastic bags are a familiar sight in towns and villages across the country. The company is Russia’s most popular online marketplace, with 79 million monthly users, more than half of the country’s population. Its reach is unmatched, both in the range of products available and the scale of its logistics network, which extends into some of Russia’s most remote regions. For millions of Russians, Wildberries has become an essential part of everyday life, offering fast and convenient delivery. In sparsely populated areas, a Wildberries pickup point can sometimes be the only significant communal facility apart from a post office and a small local shop. The company’s success has also made its founder, Tatyana Kim, Russia’s richest woman.
Why is Ukraine targeting Wildberries?
Ukrainian officials say Wildberries warehouses are being targeted because Russian soldiers frequently use the platform to purchase nonlethal equipment and other supplies. While the Wildberries marketplace does not openly sell weapons or products clearly classified as military equipment, soldiers preparing to leave for the war have reportedly used the platform to purchase essential gear. Their families also use the marketplace for ordinary household purchases. Until recently, Wildberries had a search tag specifically associated with army-related equipment, although that tag has since been removed. Products available through the platform have included tactical vests, boots and socks. Similar products are also sold by Ozon, Wildberries’ biggest Russian competitor, which has itself been targeted by Ukraine at least once. However, Wildberries is far more than a source of military-related clothing. One of its biggest-selling products last year was a $20 pair of red-checkered lounge pants. Other popular products, including hair masks, have virtually no connection to military activity. Also Read: Pentagon revokes former Air Force secretary Frank Kendall’s classified access over alleged Air Force One disclosure
Wildberries is a linchpin of Russia’s consumer economy
Ukraine’s strikes appear designed not only to disrupt military-related supply chains but also to undermine the perception of normality within Russia’s consumer economy. The company operates around 95,000 pickup points nationwide, helping maintain a sense of economic normalcy that the Kremlin has been eager to preserve. The company is also a major source of employment and income. Each Wildberries pickup point is privately owned and operated. At the same time, an estimated one million Russian sellers rely on the platform to reach customers. Many are small businesses that cannot afford traditional storefronts and would otherwise struggle to sell their products at scale.
Who owns Wildberries?
Wildberries was built from scratch in the early 2000s by Tatyana Kim, a former English teacher, and her then-husband, Vyacheslav Bakalchuk, an IT engineer. Before their highly publicized divorce in 2024, Kim owned 99 percent of the company, while Bakalchuk held the remaining 1 percent. A Russian court later awarded Kim full ownership of Wildberries as part of the couple’s divorce proceedings. The ownership structure changed significantly after Kim agreed to a controversial merger with Russ Outdoor, an advertising company valued at a fraction of Wildberries’ estimated worth. Kim now owns 65 percent of Wildberries, while 35 percent was transferred to Russ Outdoor. Critics have described Russ Outdoor as a vehicle linked to Kremlin-connected billionaire Suleyman Kerimov. Before the merger, Wildberries was estimated to be worth around $10 billion. Questions over the company’s ownership and political connections resurfaced earlier this year after its earnings report revealed that Kim’s own company had not received any dividends in the previous year. Instead, the entire 51 billion rubles, or approximately $640 million, in dividends went to Russ Outdoor.
How have the drone strikes affected Wildberries?
The attacks have hit small businesses particularly hard because many of them rely on Wildberries to store, process and distribute their products. The company acts as a critical logistics intermediary, receiving sellers’ goods, storing them in its warehouses and shipping orders to customers. An estimated 100,000 businesses are believed to have lost inventory in the attacks. The timing of a change to Wildberries’ seller agreement has also drawn attention. Just days before the first Ukrainian strike on its warehouses, the company amended its standard agreement to remove liability for losses caused by terrorist attacks or natural disasters. Wildberries has since promised financial support to affected sellers, with priority given to smaller businesses. Tatyana Kim recently said the company had already deposited 40 million rubles, or about $500,000, into the accounts of 88,000 sellers. The Russian government has also indicated that additional assistance could be provided. Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandr Novak met with senior officials and several Wildberries sellers in late July and pledged to prepare a comprehensive financial aid package. The strikes have therefore created a challenge that extends well beyond Wildberries itself. By targeting a major logistics and retail network, Ukraine is disrupting businesses, sellers, consumers and the infrastructure that helps sustain an appearance of economic normalcy inside Russia.

'There are a lot of Ukrainian drones there': As Russia's 'untouchable' assets become Kyiv's new target, Zelensky's joke is Putin's latest nightmare

When Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addresses NATO leaders in Ankara today (Tuesday, July 7), he won't simply be asking for more support. Reports suggest he'll be making the case that Ukraine has reached a critical moment in the war, one where more Western military aid could shift the balance against Russia. This comes after one of the deadliest weeks for Kyiv in months, with Russian ballistic missile attacks killing more than 50 civilians and exposing growing gaps in Ukraine's air defences. So what exactly is Zelensky expected to ask for? And what are the chances NATO delivers? Also read | 'Strategic victory': Putin claims capture of Kostyantynivka; Russian army launches 'search and elimination operations' against Ukrainian soldiers
Air defence will top the agenda
The reiterated request for more Patriot air defence systems and interceptor missiles is expected to dominate Zelensky's vital speech at the 2026 NATO Summit, set to happen in Ankara, Türkiye on July 7–8.Patriots are important for Kyiv, as Russian ballistic missiles, weapons that travel at several thousand kilometres per hour, are far harder to intercept than drones. While Ukraine continues to shoot down most incoming drones, the picture looks very different for ballistic missiles. During Monday's attacks, Ukraine failed to intercept a single ballistic missile. For Zelensky, that has become the strongest argument for additional Western support. He has repeatedly said that Patriot systems sitting in NATO stockpiles would save lives if deployed in Ukraine instead."It is simply absurd that production has still not been scaled up to the level actually required to protect people from ballistic terror," Zelensky said ahead of the summit.
What Zelensky wants to convince Trump about
Another key objective is political. Also read | 'Strategic victory': Putin claims capture of Kostyantynivka; Russian army launches 'search and elimination operations' against Ukrainian soldiers Air defence will top the agenda The reiterated request for more Patriot air defence systems and interceptor missiles is expected to dominate Zelensky's vital speech at the 2026 NATO Summit, set to happen in Ankara, Türkiye on July 7–8. Patriots are important for Kyiv, as Russian ballistic missiles, weapons that travel at several thousand kilometres per hour, are far harder to intercept than drones. While Ukraine continues to shoot down most incoming drones, the picture looks very different for ballistic missiles. During Monday's attacks, Ukraine failed to intercept a single ballistic missile. For Zelensky, that has become the strongest argument for additional Western support. He has repeatedly said that Patriot systems sitting in NATO stockpiles would save lives if deployed in Ukraine instead. "It is simply absurd that production has still not been scaled up to the level actually required to protect people from ballistic terror," Zelensky said ahead of the summit. What Zelensky wants to convince Trump about Another key objective is political. Zelensky is expected to meet US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the summit, allowing him to push for "dignified" peace. Kyiv, as per BBC, wants Trump to see Russia's latest missile campaign not as a sign of strength, but as evidence that Moscow is under pressure. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday (May 18) claimed that a Russian drone struck a Chinese cargo vessel in the Black Sea overnight. This comes a day before the Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to visit Beijing to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping. Zelensky suggested that the Russians ought to have knowledge of the Chinese ship at sea. He also accused Moscow of causing destruction across eight regions, injuring dozens of people.“Drones struck Odesa ... and one of the UAVs hit a vessel owned by China. The Russians could not have been unaware of what vessel was at sea,” Zelensky said.A Ukrainian navy spokesman told AFP that none of the crew members, all Chinese nationals, were injured. He added that the vessel continued on its journey.“The ship was entering for loading. After it was hit at night by a Shahed, the crew coped with the consequences on their own. Fortunately, no one was injured, and the vessel continued on its way to its port of destination,” navy spokesman Dmytro Pletenchuk said. The Ukrainian navy has identified the vessel as KSL Deyang. It also released an image showing part of the upper deck blackened after the apparent hit.Zelensky said that Russia used 524 attack drones and 22 missiles, including ballistic and cruise missiles, in the attack. He urged European nations to possess their own anti-ballistic capabilities to face such threats.“Russia relies on ballistic missiles to strike people, and that is precisely why we in Europe must do everything possible to ensure reliable protection against this. Europe must have its own anti-ballistic systems and be self-sufficient in the face of these threats. We repeat once again: we need our own anti-ballistic capabilities and stronger Ukrainian air defence right now. This week will be focused on working with our partners to strengthen the protection of lives. I thank everyone already working on this together with Ukraine,” Zelensky said.

Russian authorities say they have identified three people suspected of involvement in the shooting of senior military intelligence officer Lt Gen Vladimir Alexeyev, a high-ranking figure within Russia’s GRU. Investigators allege that the gunman was Lyubomir Korba, a Russian citizen originally from Ukraine, who they claim acted on instructions from Ukrainian intelligence. Ukraine has rejected the accusation, calling the incident an internal Russian matter. According to Russia’s Investigative Committee, Korba entered Moscow in late December before attacking on Friday at a residential apartment complex on the city’s north-western edge. Alexeyev, 64, was seriously wounded and taken to the hospital, where Russian media later reported he regained consciousness following surgery. Officials say the attacker fired three shots and escaped shortly afterward. Korba reportedly flew to the United Arab Emirates just hours later, where he was arrested and subsequently extradited to Russia. State television broadcast images of security officers escorting him off an aircraft at an undisclosed location. Russian investigators say Korba did not act alone. A suspected accomplice, Viktor Vasin, has been detained in Moscow and formally charged. Authorities also named Zinaida Serebritskaya as a possible participant, saying she has since fled to Ukraine, though details of her alleged role were not disclosed. The shooting is the latest in a series of attacks targeting Russian military officials since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Ukraine has previously acknowledged involvement in some operations against Russian officers, including a 2024 bombing that killed Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov. Russian officials also say they recently prevented another planned attack in St Petersburg.

On December 31, 1999, he assumed the presidency after Boris Yeltsin stepped down, making the date a symbolic moment in his leadership. Meanwhile, European Union diplomats have criticised Russia’s accusations of Ukraine launching drone attacks on President Putin’s residence, calling them a "distraction" from efforts to seek peace in the region. EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas dismissed Moscow’s claims, suggesting they were meant to derail progress towards a resolution. "Moscow aims to derail real progress towards peace by Ukraine and its Western partners," EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

'We believe in you and our victory': Vladimir Putin's message to Russian troops in Ukraine

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Ukraine of attempting to strike President Vladimir Putin’s state residence in the Novgorod region on December 28-29. Lavrov claimed that 91 long-range drones were launched at the site, describing the act as “reckless” and labeling it as "state terrorism." He warned that this alleged attack would influence Russia’s approach to future negotiations, though it was unclear if Putin was present at the time. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy rejected the accusations, calling them “lies” and asserting that Russia was preparing to strike key Ukrainian government buildings, including in Kyiv. Lavrov indicated that Russian forces had already identified targets for potential retaliatory strikes and that the situation would alter Moscow's stance in ongoing peace talks, though Russia would still engage in dialogue. Also Read: 5th-century Indian ship INSV Kaundinya embarks on maiden voyage; PM Modi hails Navy
See what Zelensky said in a post on X

Zelensky highlighted that the claim was made just one day after his nearly three-hour meeting with US President Donald Trump in Florida. Although the discussions did not result in any significant breakthroughs, Zelensky mentioned that both leaders agreed on a new version of the peace plan. This plan includes the US guaranteeing Ukraine’s security for 15 years, with an option for an extension, as he shared earlier on Monday (December 29). Also Read: Thailand accuses Cambodia of violating ceasefire with drone activity along border Zelensky posted on X, criticising Russia’s actions, saying, “Russia is once again trying to undermine the progress of our diplomatic efforts with President Trump’s team. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday (December 29) said that any agreement to end the ongoing war with Russia must be approved through a referendum by the Ukrainian people. Zelensky further emphasised that the proposed 20-point peace plan could only be put to a vote after a ceasefire of at least 60 days. These topics were discussed during his recent meeting with US President Donald Trump. In his remarks, Zelensky criticised Russia, saying that its actions in Ukraine do not align with President Putin's "peaceful rhetoric" expressed during talks with Trump. When asked whether this applied to the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions, Peskov refused to give further details. Russia currently occupies about one-fifth of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, which it annexed in 2014. According to Russian estimates, Moscow controls approximately 90% of Donbas, 75% of Zaporizhzhia, and parts of Kherson, with smaller territories in other regions, including Kharkiv, Sumy, Mykolaiv, and Dnipropetrovsk. Ukrainian president Zelensky insists any peace deal with Russia must be confirmed by referendum. He highlights unresolved issues, including Donbas control and Zaporizhzhia

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed Ukrainians on the evening of December 24 with a Christmas message that blended faith, grief, and resilience, reflecting the shared emotions of a nation at war. He said Ukrainians are united by a single hope during the festive season, even as the country continues to endure relentless Russian attacks. "Today, we all have the same dream and wish for the same thing. “For him to die”, everyone will say about themselves, but when we turn to God, of course, we ask for more, we ask for peace for Ukraine," the President said. Zelenskyy condemned Russia’s actions, calling its forces “godless” and pointing to the massive bombardment carried out on December 23, when hundreds of drones and missiles, including “Shaheds” and “Daggers,” were launched at Ukrainian cities. Such attacks, he said, have nothing to do with Christianity or basic humanity. He described Christmas Eve as a deeply symbolic moment filled with a unique warmth, emphasising that the holiday reflects everything that defines Ukrainians, their love for family, homeland, traditions, and shared roots. "It is happiness when the whole family gathers at the table. When we finally met, we hugged each other and asked each other: How are you? All this has always been an integral part of our Christmas. But in the fourth year of the full-scale war for independence, they are trying to take all this away," Zelensky said.
Watch the video here

Despite separation caused by war, the president stressed that Ukrainians remain emotionally connected, whether they are together physically or apart. This bond, he said, cannot be destroyed and continues to give people strength and hope. He added that while Russia has brought destruction and suffering, it cannot destroy what truly matters: the unity of Ukrainians, their belief in one another, and the strength of their national spirit. According to Zelenskyy, true joy does not come from festive decorations but from the inner light that lives within people. "In the skies of Kyiv, Zakarpattia, Odesa, or Kupiansk – wherever they are, Ukrainians are together today. They celebrate Christmas on the same date as one big family," Zelensky said.
