Russia on Wednesday (June 15) said that it has destroyed an ammunition warehouse for weapons in Ukraine's western Lviv region. The weapons were apparently donated by NATO countries. The Russian defence ministry said some of the ammunition was to be used for US-produced M777 howitzers, a type of artillery weapon. In a statement, the Russian defence ministry said: "Near the town of Zolochiv in Lviv region, high-precision long-range Kalibr missiles destroyed an ammunition depot of foreign weapons transferred to Ukraine by NATO countries, including 155-mm M777 howitzers. Recently, Russia has made claims that it has targeted weapons in Ukraine, which were said to be supplied by the West. Moscow also claimed that they have destroyed such arms depots. Russia has constantly criticised the West for supplying weapons to Ukraine and accused the NATO nations that they have aggravated the crisis. Recently, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned the United States saying that Russia would strike new targets if the West supplied longer-range missiles to Ukraine for use in high-precision mobile rocket systems. Meanwhile, Ukraine said on Tuesday it had received just 10 per cent of the weapons it requested from the West to deter Russia's military intervention. UK to deliver rocket launchers UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said Wednesday that Britain will soon deliver multiple-launch rocket systems to Ukraine. London had announced on June 6 that it would send Ukraine its Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System, which has better range and precision than Russia's artillery. "I think it's imminent, their delivery, and the munition has to go alongside", Wallace told reporters in Oslo on the sidelines of a meeting of the Joint Expeditionary Force grouping 10 Northern European countries. Denis Pushilin, who is the leader of the Russian-backed Donetsk region of Ukraine, said on Sunday (June 12) that he doesn't see any "grounds and prerequisites" to pardon two British nationals who were sentenced to death last week. They were captured while fighting for Ukraine against Russia. As quoted by the Russian news agencies, Pushilin said, "They came to Ukraine to kill civilians for money. Russia claims to have destroyed a large depot with US and European weapons in Ukraine using Kalibr cruise missiles, news agency Reuters reported on Sunday (June 12) citing Interfax. In the report, the Russian defence ministry stated that weapons were allegedly destroyed in the Ternopil region. Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said, "high-precision long-range sea-launched Kalibr missiles destroyed a large warehouse near the settlement of Chortkiv, Ternopil region, with anti-tank missile systems, portable anti-aircraft missile systems and artillery shells for weapons systems, supplied to the Kyiv regime from the United States and European countries." On Saturday (June 11), Reuters reported that the Russian defence ministry said in a statement that its air defence forces had shot down three Ukrainian warplanes. UK defence ministry says recent attack on Kyiv likely attempt to disrupt western arms

Staring through the sight attached to an anti-tank gun camouflaged in netting and green underbrush, Junior Sgt. Dmytro Pysanka is greeted with a kaleidoscope of numbers and lines that, if read correctly, should give him the calculations needed to fire at approaching Russian forces.

Still, errors are common in the chaos of battle. To negate them, the commanders of Pysanka’s artillery unit on the front line in southern Ukraine secured a high-tech range finder, supplied by the West more than a month ago, which uses laser technology to measure distances.

But there’s an issue: Nobody knows how to use it.

“It’s like being given an iPhone 13 and only being able to make phone calls,” said Pysanka, clearly exasperated.

More than 100 days after Russia invaded Ukraine, Western weapons have arrived at the Ukrainian front lines, with more promised. Just Monday, Britain said it would send a sophisticated multiple-launch rocket system, following a similar pledge from the United States days earlier.

But training soldiers how to use the equipment has become a significant hurdle. With his aging anti-tank gun, built in 1985, Pysanka and the weathered soldiers who crew the gun need all the help they can get.

The high-tech range finder, called a JIM LR — and likely part of the tranche of equipment supplied by the U.S., said Pysanka — seemed like a perfect choice. It can see targets at night and transmit their distance, compass heading and GPS coordinates. Some soldiers learned enough to operate it, but then rotated elsewhere, leaving the unit with an expensive paper weight.

“I have been trying to learn how to use it by reading the manual in English and using Google Translate to understand it,” Pysanka said.

The dilemma underscores the array of issues that come with Ukraine’s frequent calls for high-end Western weapons and equipment, with requests for new anti-tank guided missiles, howitzers and satellite-guided rockets seemingly pinned to their hopes for victory.

Those needs are palpable in the region where Pysanka’s battery is dug in, just northeast of the Russian-occupied port city of Kherson in southern Ukraine. The area was the site of a brief Ukrainian offensive in the past week that slowed as soon the Russians destroyed a key bridge; the Ukrainian’s lack of longer-range artillery meant they were unable to attempt a difficult river crossing in pursuit, Ukrainian military officials said.

But beyond the urgent need for the tools of war, Ukrainian troops need to know how to use them. Without proper training, the same dilemma facing Pysanka’s unit and their lone range finder will be pervasive on a much larger scale. Analysts say that providing weapons without sufficient training risks repeating the United States’ failed approach in Afghanistan, where it supplied the Afghan military with equipment that couldn’t be maintained without massive logistical support.

“Ukrainians are eager to employ Western equipment, but it requires training to maintain,” said Michael Kofman, the director of Russian studies at CNA, a research institute in Arlington, Virginia. “Some things it’s not easy to rush.”

As quoted by news agency Reuters, Russian defence ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said, "High-precision, long-range missiles fired by the Russian Aerospace Forces on the outskirts of Kyiv destroyed T-72 tanks". Konashenkov further added that the tanks were "supplied by eastern European countries". He said that and other "armoured vehicles that were in hangars". Reports claim the solar technology in warships is likely responsible for the dolphins dying with many dying due to bomb and mine explosions.

The scientists have also blamed increased noise pollution in the Black Sea due to the presence of large Russian warships and military operations responsible for the current state of the dolphins.

The sonar noise emitted from warships could be another reason as it interferes with the dolphins' communication pattern, scientists say.

In a statement, the White House as quoted by the news agency, revealed, "The United States, alongside over 30 partners around the world, has imposed unprecedented sanctions and export". The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war has caused a massive food crisis globally as the Western sanctions have disrupted deliveries of wheat and other commodities from the two countries. The disturbed supply chain raised concerns about the risk of hunger around the world. Russia and Ukraine produce around 30 per cent of the global wheat supply. However, in a positive development, the Russian defence ministry said on Thursday (June 2) that vessels carrying grain can leave Ukraine's ports in the Black Sea via "humanitarian corridors", Reuters reported quoting the Interfax news agency said. As per the report, Russia is also ready to guarantee the safety of the vessels. Interfax added that Russia would not use the humanitarian situation in Ukraine for what Moscow calls its "special military operation" in Ukraine, the defence ministry noted.
