General Sir Patrick Sanders, Britain's Chief of the General Staff, said on Tuesday (June 28) that the United Kingdom must be prepared to "fight and win" against Russia. Talking about the current tectonic shift in the geopolitical relations caused by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, Sanders drew parallels with the build-up to the breakout of the Second World War. The country's army chief has said that "this is our 1937 moment". The new head of the British army warned that the country must mobilise in response to the threat posed by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, invoking the Allies' struggle against Nazi Germany. ALSO READ | Russian missile strike on shopping mall kills at least 16 people, Ukraine says Patrick Sanders, a general who became the army's top officer this month, said that the Russian President Vladimir Putin and his "expansionist ambitions" represented "a clear and present danger" to Western "principles of sovereignty and democracy". While addressing an audience at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) for an annual army conference in London, Sanders said, "We are not at war. We must act rapidly so that we aren't drawn into one through a failure to contain territorial expansion." His comments were made as NATO members are meeting in Madrid Tuesday for a summit. The meeting is expected to be dominated by the West's response to Russia's war. He also called the scale of the war in Ukraine "unprecedented". He said, "In all my years in uniform I haven't known such a clear threat to the principles of sovereignty and democracy and the freedom to live without fear of violence as the brutal aggression of President Putin and his expansionist ambitions." The army head also backed the US and UK governments' stance of aggressively arming Ukraine in its fight against Russia to maintain peace throughout the rest of Europe. "This is the moment to defend the democratic values that define us. This is the moment to help our brave Ukrainian allies in their gallant struggle. This is the moment we stand with our friends and partners to maintain peace throughout the rest of Europe," Sanders said. To discuss global issues ranging from the Russia-Ukraine war, climate change, coronavirus pandemic and inflation, leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) wealthy nations begin a three-day meeting in Germany's Bavaria on Sunday (June 26). The G7 is made up of the United States, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan. Representatives from the European Union also attend. During the event, WION's Siddhant Sibbal spoke to Christoph Bals from the environmental organisation Germanwatch and Klaus Milke from the Foundation 20 about climate change. Germanwatch and Foundation 20 are the key NGOs in Germany. During the interaction, Milke said that "these two groups, G7 and G20 are responsible that it possible for all other countries to survive and to help the planet." The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war has disturbed the global supply chain, causing an increse in food prices. The cutting off of supplies from the world's biggest exporter of sunflower oil led to higher prices of the costs alternatives. The costs of cereals such as maize and wheat have also risen sharply. Bals said that "it is a crucial time after the Russian-Ukraine war. There are two ways to deal with this, one is now we have to invest in coal and gas to secure energy" and the other one could be renewable energy. He further said that "we hope we get a positive result in climate and food security in the world. The main point should be these countries that give enough grains to feed their own animals in the country". He stressed that we need an agricultural system in the world. The fifth discussion session of the summit, which will take place on Monday, will focus on investing in a better future: Climate, Energy, and Health. In the sixth discussion session, the leaders will discuss global food security and gender equality. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will attend this particular session. To tighten sanctions screws on Moscow and cripple its war effort in Ukraine, the United States said Sunday (June 26) that the Group of Seven (G7) nations will ban imports of Russian gold. A formal announcement of the same is expected Tuesday when the leaders will hold their annual summit.

US President Joe Biden said on Twitter: "Together, the G7 will announce that we will ban the import of Russian gold, a major export that rakes in tens of billions of dollars for Russia."

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the ban on Russian gold will "directly hit Russian oligarchs and strike at the heart of Putin's war machine."

Johnson said: "Putin is squandering his dwindling resources on this pointless and barbaric war. He is bankrolling his ego at the expense of both the Ukrainian and Russian people. We need to starve the Putin regime of its funding."

It is learnt that the measure was initially flagged by Britain as joint action being taken along with fellow G7 members Canada, Japan and the United States.

Given London's central role in the international gold trade, "this measure will have global reach, shutting the commodity out of formal international markets," Britain said.

"Gold, after energy, is the second largest export for Russia and a source of significant revenue for (President Vladimir) Putin and Russia," the US official said.

Russia's economy is already under huge pressure from Western sanctions against banks, energy companies, airlines, high-tech and consumer goods.

Now, it is understood that the choking off of the gold market will have a significant impact. According to the White House, Russia accounted for about five per cent of all gold exports in 2020 and 90 per cent of Russia's output went to G7 countries.

Russia-Ukraine conflict: Russia aims to capture Severodonetsk & Lysychansk

The United States is expected to provide an additional $450 million in security assistance to Ukraine, including more long-range rocket systems, two U.S. officials told Reuters on Thursday.

Moscow’s forces are advancing in Ukraine’s east in a bid to capture the industrial heartland known as the Donbas, where Ukraine fears some of its troops could be encircled in a Russian pincer move.

One of the officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said an announcement was expected later on Thursday and the latest package is expected to include four additional High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS).

The official added that details on the package could change at the last minute.

Earlier on Thursday, Ukraine said it had received the first tranche of HIMARS, a powerful long-range weapon system that Kyiv hopes can help turn the tide in the months-long battle.

The latest package comes after President Joe Biden's administration last week announced a fresh infusion of $1 billion in weapons for Ukraine that includes anti-ship rocket systems, artillery rockets, howitzers and ammunition.

The war has entered a brutal attritional phase in recent weeks, with Russian forces concentrating overwhelming artillery firepower on the Donbas, which Moscow claims on behalf of separatists.

Ukraine says it needs the HIMARS systems to better match the range of Russian rocket systems that it says are being extensively used to pummel Ukrainian positions in Donbas.

Washington has said it has received assurances from Kyiv that those longer-range weapons would not be used to attack Russian territory, fearing an escalation of the conflict.

U.S. officials have said that while HIMARS are important for Ukrainian forces, no single weapon system alone can change the war.

Moscow has warned it will strike targets in Ukraine which they "have not yet been hitting" if the West supplies longer-range missiles to Ukraine for use in high-precision mobile rocket systems.

The leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa virtually address the BRICS Summit. The gathering of emerging world economies this year is hosted by China. The major focus is Russia amid the Ukraine. WION's Principal Diplomatic Correspondent Siddhant Sibbal brings you more on this.

The BRICS Summit: Beijing hosts meeting of BRICS emerging economies

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday (June 23) called on the leaders of BRICS nations (Brazil, India, China and South Africa) to cooperate in the face of "selfish actions" from the West.

In the ongoing war, two Britons and a Moroccan were captured while fighting for Ukraine against Russia. They were sentenced to death by a court in the self-proclaimed breakaway Donetsk People's Republic (DPR). Now, they are preparing to appeal, Russia's TASS news agency reported on Thursday (June 23) citing one of their lawyers. The court found Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner - and Moroccan Brahim Saadoun guilty of "mercenary activities" seeking to overthrow the republic. News agencies have noted that the court in DPR is armed and supported financially by Russia. "My colleagues and I are currently preparing the full text of an appeal against the sentence in the interests of our defendants," said Pinner's lawyer, Yulia Tserkovnikova as quoted by TASS. "Undoubtedly, if the appeal is dismissed and the sentence comes into force, a request for clemency will be filed as this is an inherent right of the defendants, under the legislation of the Donetsk People's Republic," she added. The website of UK-based newspaper The Telegraph has been blocked in Russia, state communications regulator Roskomnadzor's data showed on Tuesday (June 21). TASS news agency cited the regulator as saying that the access to Telegraph.co.uk was restricted after it was found to have disseminated "inaccurate information about the special military operation conducted by Russia's Armed Forces on the territory of Ukraine." Russia announced the invasion of Ukraine on February 24, calling it a "special military operation". Ever since the invasion, Russia has cracked down on media coverage of the conflict, blocking the websites of foreign news outlets. Russia claims the international sites might have spread "fake" news about its military campaign. Although, The Telegraph has claimed that it is the first British newspaper to have its website blocked in Russia. But, notably, the website of the BBC was among other sites that were apparently blocked in Russia for their coverage of the Ukraine war. The Telegraph said: "The Telegraph is proud of its reporting of the invasion of Ukraine and regrets attempts by Russia to restrict press freedoms." This year on February 24, Russia announced an invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow says is a "military operation". The Russian invasion of Ukraine has been described as the biggest attack on a European state since World War II. Amid the Ukraine war, Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday (June 21) said that he was "proud" of the action of his soldiers in Ukraine. In a televised remark during a Kremlin meeting with military academy graduates, Putin said, "We are proud that during the special military operation our fighters act with courage, professionalism, like real heroes." In the aftermath of the war, Russia was slapped with multiple economic sanctions by Western countries, leaving Moscow in tatters. Although referring to Western sanctions, Putin said "they will be overcome". He further said that "in the face of new threats and risks, we will further develop and strengthen our armed forces. Putin also promised that the new Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile would be commissioned by the end of the year. "There is no doubt that we will be even stronger," Putin added. This year on April 20, Putin announced the test launch of its nuclear-capable Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). The Sarmat superheavy intercontinental ballistic missile is designed to elude anti-missile defence systems with a short initial boost phase, giving enemy surveillance systems a tiny window to track. Weighing more than 200 tonnes and able to transport multiple warheads, Putin says the missile can hit any target on Earth. Russia warns Lithuania Meanwhile, Russia's security council chief Nikolai Patrushev warned European Union and NATO member Lithuania of "serious" consequences over its decision to ban the rail transit of goods that are subject to EU sanctions between mainland Russia and Kaliningrad, a Russian region wedged between Lithuania and Poland. The Russia-Ukraine war has threatened to cause an energy crisis in the coming winter as Europe's biggest gas buyers from Moscow are finding alternative fuel supplies.

The Russia-Ukraine war has threatened to cause an energy crisis in the coming winter as Europe's biggest gas buyers from Moscow are finding alternative fuel supplies. As a result, they could burn more coal to cope with reduced gas flows. Recently, Germany said that it will take emergency measures to ensure it meets its energy needs after the drop in the supply of Russian gas. The so-called, emergency measures include increased use of coal. Germany's economy ministry said in a statement: "To reduce gas consumption, less gas must be used to generate electricity. Coal-fired power plants will have to be used more instead." On the other hand, Austria also announced that it would reopen a mothballed coal power station because of power shortages. After a crisis meeting of the government, the authorities said that they would work with the Verbund group, which is the country's main electricity supplier, to get the station back in action. Meanwhile, the Netherlands said it would lift all restrictions on power stations fired by the fossil fuel. Earlier, they were limited to just over a third of output. Dutch climate and energy minister Rob Jetten told journalists in The Hague that the cabinet has decided to "immediately withdraw the restriction" on production for coal-fired power stations from 2002 to 2024. Europe is trying to cope with the crisis. In the process, European nations are inclined to burn more coal, but isn't it hypocrisy? The European governments have been accused of exploiting the fossil fuel reserves of the developing world. Leading European nations are firing up their coal plants again - after refusing to commit to climate financing. WATCH this report: × If we talk about Germany, how the country will plan to exit coal in 2030? As the authorities said that will ease restrictions on power stations fired by fossil fuels. Not just Germany, the EU's ambition is to become climate neutral by 2050. Going back to using coal for power generation seriously threatens that. Even Brussels raised concerns as European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen told several European media in an interview: "We have to make sure that we use this crisis to move forward and not to have a backsliding on the dirty fossil fuels." She added that it's a "fine line and it is not determined whether we are going to take the right turn". Neil Makaroff of Climate Action Network said that turning back to coal "is a bad choice" with structural consequences. Makaroff said that the "countries are continuing to back fossil energy rather than investing enough in renewables." "The risk is substituting one dependency for another: importing Colombian or Australian coal, US or Qatari liquified natural gas, to replace Russian hydrocarbons," he added. Stephen Zabielski, a United States citizen was killed while fighting for Ukraine against Russia amid the ongoing war, the US State Department said Tuesday (June 21). Zabielski is the second US citizen to die fighting against Russian forces. As per an obituary published in a New York newspaper The Recorder, the 52-year-old Zabielski was killed on May 15 in the village of Dorozhnyanka, Zaporizhzhia Oblast. However, US State Department confirmed the news on Tuesday. The department has not revealed the details about Zabielski's unfortunate death as it said: "Out of respect to the family during this difficult time, we have nothing further." In a statement, a State Department spokesperson said the agency has been in touch with his family and provided "all possible consular assistance." However, a report by Rolling Stone mentioned that Zabielski, who was a US war veteran-turned-construction worker, died after stepping on a landmine. The spokesperson's statement repeated earlier warnings that US citizens should not travel to Ukraine because of the conflict and the potential for the Russian government to single them out. It added that any citizens in Ukraine should depart immediately. Despite the earlier warnings not to take up arms in Ukraine, several Americans have volunteered to fight alongside Ukrainian forces. Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Monday confirmed that Americans Andy Huynh, 27, of Hartselle, Alabama, and Alexander Drueke, 39, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, were detained while fighting on the Ukrainian side. Peskov said they were mercenaries who endangered the lives of Russian servicemen and should face responsibility for their actions. The European Central Bank (ECB) on Monday (June 20) said that the arrival of Ukrainian refugees into the European Union could gradually solve labour shortage issues. ECB noted that some of those fleeing the war are likely looking to settle permanently.

Russia announced the invasion of Ukraine this year on February 24, with Moscow calling it special military operations. The Russia-Ukraine war led to the displacement of people on a very large scale.

According to the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR), a total of 8.3 million refugees could have left Ukraine by the end of the year. More than 7.5 million have fled Ukraine and millions more have been displaced inside the country. Those who entered the neighbouring countries, hope to find durable employment opportunities in the 27-nation EU.

The situation is expected to benefit both, as the euro zone has been struggling with increasing labour shortages and on the other hand, those who entered Europe, are looking for work. The ECB said that the influx of refugees could "slightly ease" labour market tightness.

The ECB said in an Economic Bulletin article: "Under all of the assumptions detailed thus far, back-of-an-envelope calculations point to a median increase of between 0.2% and 0.8% in the euro area labour force in the medium term."

"This corresponds to an increase of between 0.3 and 1.3 million in the size of the euro area labour force as a result of the Ukrainian refugee crisis," it added.

The ECB further added that getting people to work may prove difficult due to administrative barriers. "Barriers to the labour market and other frictions remain significant impediments to refugees, making it difficult for them to integrate into host countries’ labour markets, especially in the short term," it said.

As foodgrain continues to remain blocked in the Black Sea port due to the Ukraine war, President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that "Africa is actually a hostage". "This war may seem very distant to you and your countries. But the food prices that are catastrophically rising have already brought (the war) to the homes of millions of African families," the Ukraine president told the African Union. Zelensky asserted that the "unjust level of food prices" was caused due to the Russian war which was being "painfully felt on all continents. Unfortunately, this can be a particular problem for your countries." Also Read: 'Network' holding $4.5bn assets linked to Vladimir Putin uncovered The Ukraine president claimed 25 million tonnes of foodgrain was being blocked by Russia as he informed that "complex, multilevel negotiations" were underway with Russian authorities to lift the blockade of Ukrainian ports but he conceded that no progress has been made so far. "Food crisis in the world will continue as long as this colonial war continues," Zelensky told the African countries. Meanwhile, Russia said "the possibility of famine" was the "fault of Western regimes". The Russian foreign ministry blamed the Western nations for "systematic mistakes" in its agricultural policy while saying that it had created "short-sighted" financial and monetary mechanisms amid the pandemic. The foreign ministry said it is "impossible" to isolate Russia, while adding, "what is possible is for the West to isolate itself. If they isolated anybody, they isolated themselves from us. Amid the Ukraine war, Russia has become China's biggest supplier of oil, customs data showed on Monday (June 20). Amid sanctions on Moscow for invading Ukraine, China's imports of oil from Russia rose 55 per cent in May, displacing Saudi Arabia as China's biggest provider. In May, China imported around 8.42 million tonnes of oil from Russia.

Unlike the West, Beijing has refused to condemn Moscow's war. This year in February, China and Russia declared their friendship had "no limits". In the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Western countries imposed economic sanctions on Moscow. It caused a massive impact on imports and exports, and disturbances in supply chain issues. No more free entry: Ukraine to launch visas for Russians from July 1, says Zelensky

The Russian Orthodox Church on Thursday dismissed sanctions against its leader, Patriarch Kirill, imposed by Britain for his support of Moscow's military intervention in Ukraine.

"Attempts to intimidate the primate of the Russian Church with something or to force him to renounce his views are senseless, absurd and unpromising," church spokesman Vladimir Legoyda said on Telegram.

"The church -- now especially -- is the last bridge, a means of communication, which they are trying to destroy for some reason," Legoyda said.

"This may be necessary only for those political forces that have the escalation of conflict and the alienation of peace as their important goal," he added.

"There is no other way I can explain such absurd and counterproductive measures, which contribute to only one thing -- breaking the already severely damaged communication between the European community and Russia," he said.

Britain on Thursday sanctioned the 75-year-old cleric and ally of President Vladimir Putin two weeks after the EU dropped him from their own sanctions list after opposition from Hungary.

The new UK list also includes Maria Lvova-Belova, the Russian children's rights commissioner, for allegedly overseeing the forced adoption in Russia of some 2,000 Ukrainian children.
