In Ukraine, all women, children and elderly civilians have been evacuated from the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol. This comes after a week-long effort to rescue hundreds of people who were stuck at the plant.

Russian invasion of Ukraine: Civilians evacuated from Azovstal Steel Plant in Mariupol

After Ukraine said Russian forces had launched a powerful assault on the Azovstal steel plant, Kremlin denied Russia was storming the plant.

"There is no storming," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, adding, "The order was publicly given by the supreme commander-in-chief to call off the assault."

The Russian army had said earlier that its forces were using artillery and planes to target Azovstal. Mariupol has been bombarded by Russian forces for weeks with reports indicating that the city is without water, food and electricity.

Russia's response to outside intervention will be lightning fast: Putin on Ukraine war

Amidst a series of threats from the Russian establishment on the possibility of a World War III if the West intervenes in the Ukraine conflict, a Russian TV host sought to comfort the viewers while discussing a potential nuclear war, saying “It’s ok…We're all going to die someday.”

According to Newsweek, on Tuesday night's show, 'The Evening With Vladimir Solovyov', host Vladimir Solovyov, accompanied by Margarita Simonyan, journalist and head of RT, said that a nuclear war is the only possibility in order to stop other countries from intervening in Russia's war with Ukraine.

"Personally, I think that the most realistic way is the way of World War III, based on knowing us and our leader, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin," The Daily Beast quoted Simonyan as saying.

"Knowing how everything works around here, it's impossible — there is no chance — that we will give up,” she said while suggesting that the Russian citizens would be ok if the Russian establishment uses nuclear warheads.

“What is happening right now is not about Ukraine, but about the future world order, which has no room for hegemony and where Russia can’t be isolated,” she added.

Simonyan continued saying, “Everything will end with a nuclear strike is more probable than the other outcome. This is to my horror, on one hand, but on the other hand, with the understanding that it is what it is."

To which Vladimir Solovyov added, "But we will go to heaven, while they will simply croak."

"We're all going to die someday," Simonyan said to the audience.

Russia-Ukraine war: Russian TV host comforts viewers on nuke attack, says ‘we all die someday'

-by Neev Tanish Sinha

Editor's note: The writer of this article is an Indian student of Grade IV. A voracious reader and a Potter head, Neev reached out to WION about wanting to share his thoughts on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war after he stumbled upon an image on the internet of children huddled in a bunker somewhere in Ukraine. The following article has been published as received.

An image of children huddled inside a bunker stared at me this morning. All around ten years, approximately my age, hiding in Ukraine to save from their enemy, Russia. Why are Russia and Ukraine enemies? I asked and googled. I gathered, Russia claims a part of Ukraine as theirs and wants the country to surrender. But, if they believe that a part of the country belongs to them then why are they bombing themselves?

The children in the image wore Covid-19 masks, sadness visible in their eyes. Evident, that they were separated from their families. When would they get together again? Would everyone be alive? Their houses would remain? The children looked pale and scared. I felt, they were waiting to be free and hug their loved ones.

Did I see in their eyes, the fear of getting orphaned? I remember reading Oliver Twist, an orphan who was ill-treated and abused, living in constant fear of doing something unapproved and getting beaten up. Oliver had escaped. Would there be an Oliver in these children?

(The writer found this image on the internet. Source unknown)

Was the bunker hygenic? Did they get their food? If any of them would get high fever, would a doctor attend? How long would it take for them to get back to school – I wondered sitting inside my classroom that had just opened after the long COVID situation. Would their schools still be there? Or would they be destroyed! I pray for them, hoping they’d return to their comfort and safety soon.

I spoke to my parents about wars. They are as clueless as I am.

The other day I saw a clip of people fleeing from Afghanistan. They climbed on either side of the airplane and even on top, legs dangling out of the door, desperate to run from their own country, to be able to live a life of their choice. How would they resettle, where would they find dignity, are amongmany unanswered questions of mine. I started reading about wars. I wish I didn’t. War is all about blood and death, disability and trauma. The India-Pakistan disputes have led to many wars in the past. We were once the same country, now separated. The relationships between countries are not as simple as mine with my best friend. We disagree and eventually one of us lets go. We choose to be friends because that makes us happy. Why don’t countries want to be happy?

People kill each other in a war. Many soldiers return disabled, some never return.

But still, wars happen.Countries become enemies. Two beautiful geographies that can offer tourism to each other, where people come to learn and experience art, choose the path of destruction instead.

I remember reading books with stories of wars. 'The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank' introduced me to the fears and loneliness of a thirteen-year-old during World War II when the Germans were killing the Jews. The Franks were hiding in a secret annex above the father’s office, sharing space with another family, cut off from the world outside. After two years of hiding, they were betrayed and the family was arrested. Anne Frank’s diary ended abruptly; so did her life. The children in the bunker reminds me of Anne Frank. I feel uncomfortable.

Another book,' Wonder' by R. J. Palacio briefly touches upon a grandmother’s childhood when Germans came to France and Jews were fleeing. In my school, we don’t talk about the war. I hear about it at home. On my mother’s WhatsApp, I find people sending jokes and memes about war. They must not have read these books or seen the images. I heard from my father about the news correspondents reporting from the war front, going out and taking cover at regular intervals, telling the world what is happening there. I hope and I pray that their work ends at the earliest. I also wait for them to declare that the bunker is empty now and the children have been sent back home.

-by Neev Tanish Sinha Editor's note: The writer of this article is an Indian student of Grade IV. Source unknown) Was the bunker hygenic? A young boy with deformed legs sarcastically called Tourteau, helped her to escape when Jew children – crying, pleading, frightened – were being taken hostage. She kept in hiding for two years and never saw her mother again. For how long would the children in Ukraine have to stay inside the bunker? John Boyne’s 'The Boy in Striped Pyjamas' showed the life of the prisoners living in severe conditions – under-fed, overworked and subjected to extreme cruelty. Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky declared on Tuesday that "Russian troops have begun the battle for the Donbas".

The Ukraine president added that Russian troops were "preparing for a long time" for the Donbas offensive. Putin's forces had captured Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, ever since then pro-Russian separatists have been fighting Ukraine's forces in a low-intensity war in the eastern region.

Zelensky asserted that "no matter how many Russian soldiers are brought here, we will fight. We will defend ourselves."

Ukraine war: President Biden accuses Russian forces of committing 'genocide'

UNICEF has claimed that 4.8 million out of 7.5 million Ukraine children have been displaced and 142 youngsters have lost their lives as a consequence to the Russian-Ukraine war that started on February 24.

The UN children’s agency further believes that the number of children leaving their homes could be higher than their estimate.

Manuel Fontaine, UNICEF’s emergency programs director who recently returned from Ukraine, said that he has never seen such humanitarian tragedy on this scale in such a short time.

“They have been forced to leave everything behind — their homes, their schools and, often, their family members,” he told the UN Security Council.

“I have heard stories of the desperate steps parents are taking to get their children to safety, and children saddened that they are unable to get back to school,” he was quoted as saying.

"As of yesterday, OHCHR has verified 142 children killed and 229 children injured. We know these numbers are likely much higher —and many of them were caused by crossfire or the use of explosive weapons in populated areas,” he added.

According to AP news agency, Ukraine’s UN ambassador Sergiy Kyslytsya has claimed that Russia has taken more than 121,000 children, both orphans and those with parents, out of Ukraine and planning to get them adopted in Russia.

He claimed that most of the children were removed from the besieged southern port city of Mariupol and taken to eastern Donetsk and then to the Russian city of Taganrog.

UNICEF’s Fontaine claimed that he, too, has heard similar reports, but added that “we don’t have yet the access that we need to have to be able to look and verify and see if we can assist.”

He said that of Ukraine’s displaced children, 2.8 million are in Ukraine and 2 million more are in other countries.

At the same time, he said, nearly half the estimated 3.2 million children still in their homes in Ukraine “may be at risk of not having enough food,” with those in besieged cities like Mariupol facing the most dire situation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday (April 6) accused Russia of hiding evidence related to "thousands" of people killed in Mariupol in an attempt to block humanitarian access to the besieged port city. As quoted by news agency AFP citing Turkish media outlet Haberturk TV, Zelensky said: "The reason why we cannot get into Mariupol with the humanitarian cargo is precisely because they are afraid... that the world will see what is going on there." "I think it's a tragedy there, it's hell, I know that it's not tens, but thousands of people, different people, who have been killed there and thousands wounded," Zelensky added. During his conversation with Turkish TV, Zelensky said, "They will not be able to hide all of this and bury all of these Ukrainians who died and who are injured. It's just such a number, it's thousands of people, it's impossible to hide." ALSO READ | Who are Katerina and Maria, the Russian President's daughters hit by US sanctions? Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says Russia hiding 'thousands' killed in Mariupol

Pope Francis on Wednesday condemned Bucha killing and held up a Ukrainian flag sent to him from the town where tied bodies shot at close range, a mass grave and other signs of executions were found.

"Recent news from the war in Ukraine, instead of bringing relief and hope, brought new atrocities, such as the massacre of Bucha," he said at the end of his weekly audience in the Vatican's auditorium.

"Cruelty that is increasingly horrendous, even against civilians, defenceless women and children. They are victims whose innocent blood cries out up to heaven and implores: 'Stop this war! Let the weapons fall silent! Stop sowing death and destruction'," he said.

The Kremlin said on Tuesday that Western allegations Russian forces committed war crimes by executing civilians in Bucha were a "monstrous forgery" aimed at denigrating the Russian army.

"Yesterday, precisely from Bucha, they brought me this flag," he said, unfolding it and holding it up for the audience of several thousand, which broke into applause. The flag looked darkened and stained and had writing on it.

"It comes from the war, precisely from that martyred city, Bucha," he said, before asking a group of children war refugees who arrived on Tuesday from Ukraine to come up to him.

"These children had to flee in order to arrive in a safe land. This is the fruit of war. Let's not forget them and let's not forget the Ukrainian people," he said, before giving each child a gift of a chocolate Easter egg.

China launched cyberattack against Ukraine before Russian invasion: Report

Just days after Russia and Ukraine concluded their talks in Istanbul, NATO declared that "Russia is trying to regroup, resupply and reinforce its offensive in the Donbas region".

"Russia maintains pressure on Kyiv and other cities. So, we can expect additional offensive actions, bringing even more suffering," NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg warned citing intelligence sources.

Russian negotiators had said that its forces would "radically" scale down attacks on Kyiv and northern Ukraine in order to ensure a conducive atmosphere amid the talks.
